FESTIVAL OF LIGHT SHINES OUT FOR ST LUKE’S PATIENTS AND FAMILIES IN 2019 ST Luke’s Hospice is set to shine again this winter as one of the city’s most popular festive events brings seasonal warmth to winter. For more than 20 years, the St Luke’s Festival of Light has provided the opportunity for families to come together and remember loved ones in a very special way, dedicating a light in their memory which will shine over the festive period. It’s a chance for friends from Sheffield and beyond to join the St Luke’s team in a
light-filled celebration for the whole family to enjoy and this year the lights will shine out on December 1, when BBC Radio Sheffield presenter and keen St Luke’s supporter Paulette Edwards will once again be hosting the evening. The crowds will start to assemble from 5pm to enjoy complimentary mulled wine, hot drinks and enjoy the festive flavour of some seasonal favourites, along with music from Oughtibridge Brass Band and Sheffield Harmony Choir. Parking is never a
problem as First Bus provides a free park and ride service from the Tesco car park at Abbeydale Road direct to Little Common Lane and back – the buses run regularly from 4.30pm. Every person who attends is invited to take a light, decorate a candle bag in memory of a loved one and join in with carols, while enjoying the very special atmosphere of the evening. The St Luke’s Book of Remembrance will be on display throughout the event, providing an

opportunity to review dedications. The lights are switched on at 6.15, after a moment of reflection, when Paulette will be joined on stage by a St Luke’s patient to flick the switch and transform the St Luke’s gardens into a winter wonderland, each light shining out in memory of a loved one. “At St Luke’s we value and celebrate life every day but the Festival of Life comes at that time of year when many of us remember our loved ones the most,” said St Luke’s Campaigns Coordinator

Karan Taylor. “No matter how much time our patients may have, our aim is always to make that time as precious and fulfilling as possible, to give patients and their families happy, positive moments that will become cherished memories. “The Festival of Light, as both a very special event and as a fundraising campaign, is a great opportunity to celebrate and support the ongoing work of the St Luke’s team in supporting the people of Sheffield.” For more information about the Festival of Light and how to get dedicate a light visit www.stukeshospice. org.uk

ROTHERHAM TRAM TRAIN SCHEME WINS GLOBAL AWARD Transport partners leading the UK’s first Tram Train pilot in South Yorkshire have won a prestigious Global Light Rail Award, recognising excellence and innovation in the global light and urban rail sector. South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), together with Network Rail, Stagecoach Supertram and the Department for Transport, were presented with the
Team of the Year award in recognition of the innovative partnership efforts taken to maximise skills and efficiencies to successfully deliver the Tram Train scheme. The project was also Highly Commended in the category of ‘Project of the Year Over €50m.’ SYPTE Executive Director, Stephen Edwards, said: “We are delighted that the Tram Train team’s hard work, collaboration and creativity has been recognised at the Global Light Rail Awards. It is
testament to the huge efforts made by partners to ensure the groundbreaking Tram Train technology will bring long lasting benefits to our region and to the UK’s rail industry.” “The Tram Train has certainly faced its fair share of challenges but since it opened last October, supported by over £50 million of funding from the Department for Transport, it has proved extremely popular with passengers.” Tram Train services
have operated between Sheffield city centre and Rotherham Parkgate since October 2018. Linking systems and operations together to run on the existing tramway and rail network, the technology aims to improve connections across the region and encourage economic growth. Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “I’m pleased that the Tram Train has been awarded the Global Light Rail Award in recognition of excellence
and innovation. It’s great to see that the tram-train is now not only a huge success in its own right but could be used as a blueprint for similar schemes across the UK – once again putting innovation sparked here in South Yorkshire on the national map. “Whilst the Tram Train is very important in its own right, it’s part of a wider picture of transport improvements across South Yorkshire. These include prioritising Active Travel, creating an integrated rail network and ensuring our bus network is fit for the 21st century.” The Tram Train concept

is being piloted so that the rail industry can understand and assess the technical issues involved in such operations. If it is successful, it could open the way for Tram Trains to be introduced elsewhere. Simon Coulthard, Senior Sponsor for Network Rail, said: “We are thrilled to have won this prestigious award which highlights the dedication and hard work which has made this project a success. The strong working relationship
of all parties involved played a key role in the delivery of this project. “Tram Train services are bringing real benefits to passengers in South Yorkshire through improved connections and will continue to do so in the future.” Stagecoach Supertram’s Managing Director, Tim Bilby, said: “This recognition is testament to both the hard work that has gone into the project from all parties involved, and the importance it has for wider UK development
of transport solutions.” Considered as the industry’s ‘Oscars’, the Global Light Rail Awards welcomes guests from around the world to celebrate outstanding achievement and innovation. The 2019 event, organised by Mainspring and supported by industry publication Tramways & Urban Transit, was hosted by broadcaster and journalist Nicholas Owen, in London on 2 October.

What’s the fastest liquid on Earth? Milk. It’s pasteurised before you can see it. A Woodworm walks into a bar... And asks: “Is the bar tender here?” I told my wife that a husband ages like wine. We get better with age. Then she locked me in the cellar. A new strain of lice is going around that is resistant to conventional treatments. It’s left scientists scratching their heads. My neighbor kept running across my lawn and then pretends to get blown up by explosives. I’m tired of his mine games. What did the mouse use to build his house? Cottage cheese. Getting my toy drone stuck in the tree isn’t the worst thing that happened to me today. But it’s definitely up there. When I was 10 my Mom told me to take my brother to a movie so she could set up for his surprise birthday party. That was when I realized he was her favorite twin, not me. A man walked into a hardware store, picked up a can of fly spray and asked the assistant, “Is this good for wasps?” Assistant: “No. It kills them.” After all these years, my wife still thinks I’m sexy. Every time I walk by she says: “What an ass!” They all laughed when I told them that one day I would discover the secrets of invisibility. If only they could see me now. My wife was worried about meeting new people on our upcoming cruise. I said: “Don’t worry. We’ll all be in the same boat.”

Best known for playing Neil in the much loved BBC2 cult comedy The Young Ones, Nigel has worked extensively in TV, film and radio throughout his illustrious 40-year career. He is also certainly no stranger to the stage, with theatre credits including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hairspray, Chicago, Wicked and We Will Rock You. Nigel Planer said: “It’s a great honour to be asked to play Grandpa in the live version of this amazing and cockle-warming story by David Walliams. It’s set to be such an amazing spectacular and I can’t wait to drive a tank and fly a life-size Spitfire over audiences around the country!” Grandpa’s Great Escape Live follows the acclaimed television film which aired on BBC One in December 2018, and will be directed by Tony® Award nominee Sean Foley (The Catherine Tate Show Live & The Painkiller). Grandpa’s Great Escape is the eighth book by Walliams and was published in September 2015 by HarperCollins Children’s Books David Walliams said: “Grandpa’s Great Escape Live is an incredible new development for the book. councils failing visually impaired children
QUOTING ‘THE MERCURY’
• A third of local authorities in Yorkshire have cut or frozen funding for specialist education services supporting children and young people with vision impairment (VI) since 2017. • A third of councils in the region have also slashed the number of specialist support staff over the last two years. • More than 700 children across the region are affected – which equates to one in five VI children locally. One in five children and young people with vision impairment (VI) are being failed by underfunded local authorities (LAs) across Yorkshire and Humber according to research published today by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). The report, Left out of Learning, reveals a third (33 per cent) of LAs in the area have cut or frozen funding for specialist education services supporting at least 727 VI children over the last two years. A further third (42 per cent) have not kept budgets in line with inflation – affecting an additional 1,174 children. The findings, which come from a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, also show that four LAs in Yorkshire have made a reduction in support staff from 2017 to 2019. This has meant a loss of four full-time equivalent Qualified Teachers of Vision Impairment (QTVI), who are central to making mainstream
education accessible for visually impaired children and young people. Despite this squeeze in resource, six LAs admitted to a current or proposed review of their VI services. Scott Jobson, Network Manager for RNIB in Yorkshire and Humber, said: “Every day in schools across the region, children are expected to learn by reading books, watching demonstrations, interpreting graphs and completing written tasks. But these activities all rely heavily on the ability to see. Children and young people with vision impairment require specialist support to access the curriculum, navigate their school, take part in sports or games and learn on equal terms with sighted children. This vital support enables them to develop the essential skills they need to succeed, not just at school, but as adults with full lives. Our research has revealed a shocking lack of resource for local authorities to deliver this crucial provision. Despite an increasing number of children and young people requiring and accessing specialist support in the last few years, funding has been cut, QTVI roles have been lost and caseloads have increased - putting remaining services under enormous strain. With more than £14 billion being promised for primary and secondary education between now and 2023, we are urging the
Government to act now and correct this funding gap to ensure every child with vision impairment is able to fulfil their potential.” Along with the report, RNIB has launched an interactive map that displays where local authorities have frozen, cut or threatened changes to funding for VI services, along with an accessible list of the data. It demonstrates how structures, practices and budgets for specialist education services vary significantly across local authorities – a “postcode lottery” that RNIB is keen to see addressed. For a full copy of the report and to explore the map, visit www.rnib.org.uk/ left-out-learning. About RNIB Every six minutes, someone in the UK begins to lose their sight. RNIB is taking a stand against exclusion, inequality and isolation to create a world without barriers where people with sight loss can lead full lives. A different world where society values blind and partially sighted people not for the disabilities they’ve overcome, but for the people they are. ten easy ways to tackle the winter blues seven pension mistakes As the season changes and the sun goes down early, it’s easy to let your mood sink with it. Whether you find you’re affected by the lack of daylight or simply find yourself feeling less than your best when life’s stresses get in the way, the good news is there’s plenty of easy steps you can take to help give you a lift. Check out these simple and natural ways to help battle those winter blues… 1. Go for a walk It may sound overly simple, but exercise is a huge mood booster. It’s been proven that with light exercise every day, your body releases more endorphins (happy hormones) that keep you feeling balanced. 2. Eat Healthily Watching what you eat is hard during the winter, especially with the big festivals of Christmas and New Year’s being right in the middle of the season. But foods that are high in processed fat and sugar will leave you feeling sluggish and tired. Balancing out your diet with some good fats; nuts, which reduce anxiety, and wild salmon, which is a natural antidepressant can go a long way. Also, try to include some complex carbohydrates, like whole grain bread and pasta – they will keep your metabolism even and your good mood up. 3. Indulge in some dark chocolate Amazingly, this little treat can boost your mood. Chocolate contains an amino acid called tryptophan, which boosts serotonin levels in the brain. 4. Play with a pet Studies have shown that petting a dog or a cat can release all the hormones associated with good feelings, such as serotonin and oxytocin. If you don’t have a pet of your own, consider offering a friend or neighbour to take their dog for a walk.
5. Watch what you drink It’s common during the festive periods to have a bit of a tipple, and that’s fine in moderation, but alcohol is a depressant and a few nights of drinking can leave a lasting depressive effect a few days later. 6. Get some sleep – but not too much Everyone has different needs when it comes to sleeping, but getting a good night’s sleep will leave you feeling recharged. Try to stay away from your TV or computer screen just before bed as this can make it more difficult to fully unwind. 7. Take a bath An interesting study carried out at Yale University showed that taking a bath was an effective substitute for social interaction when people were feeling a bit lonely. On top of that, if you’re feeling stressed it is a great way to relax and spend some time concentrating on yourself. 8. Let plenty of light in It’s short on supply in the winter, but daylight is a great mood booster. Sunlight is vital to our mental health, and making the most of the little we get in the colder months is essential. Keep your curtains open during the day, your house will feel airier and you will feel less enclosed. 9. Get creative Writing down your feelings in a journal, or painting how you feel has proven effective therapy for people wanting to relieve stress. A study at Boston College showed that people became happier when they expressed their feelings through artwork. 10. Meet up with friends Social contact is very important for human beings, we’re social by nature, and it’s shown that when we are with other people, we laugh more, smile more and touch more, all things that will work to improving your mood.
you should avoid
No matter what your age, it’s never too early to start thinking about how you plan to fund your retirement. Whether you’ve already started building a nest egg, or are simply weighing up your options, make sure you avoid these seven costly retirement planning mistakes. 1.Underestimating how long your pension will need to last - The good news is that we’re all living longer, however the bad news is that it means our savings will need to last much longer too. 2. Thinking you can live off the State Pension alone - In 2017 the OECD calculated that the UK has the lowest State Pension of any developed country. And to receive the maximum amount of £8,767.20 a year (the equivalent of £168.60 a week in 2019/20) you’ll need to have paid National Insurance Contributions for at least 35 years. Which? found that an average couple needs around £26,000 a year for a comfortable retirement, it’s clear that the State Pension isn’t like. 3. Putting all your savings into property - Investing in bricks and mortar gives you something tangible that you can sell in retirement however, you’ll need to be prepared to move out and downsize to take full advantage of it. 4. Losing track of old pensions - To avoid losing track, and potentially paying higher fees than you’d like, you might want to consider consolidating your pensions into one. This could help you better manage your retirement savings as you’ll have one clear balance, one fee and can easily track the performance of your investments. 5. Not checking your annual statements - Each year your pension provider will send you an annual summary of your

Forgetting you’ll need to pay tax Only the first 25% is tax-free and you’ll need to pay tax on everything else you withdraw. 7. Don’t bury your head in the sand - If you’ve had your head in the sand when it comes to your pension, there’s no time like the present to sort it out. The longer you put it off, the more you’ll have to save in later life to afford the retirement you want.

Ready for a financial shift? An electric New Moon opposing Uranus, could coincide with a realization or an event that moves you into action and encourages a fresh start. You may have been pondering the idea of change, and if so, it might be impossible to put it off any longer. Call for more news…
Are you a good money manager? If finances have seemed out of control, then events this week can push you to get back on track. Keep receipts and paperwork for expensive purchases though, as Mercury enters its retrograde phase, and an item or service could fail to please. Call for more…
Relationships may be a top priority with the potential for a new beginning. This might arise out of a desire to share something personal that could change the context of a key bond. It can also come as a surprise. But if it liberates you from someone’s false expectations, it can be a positive. Call for more…
Giving someone more freedom to be who they are doesn’t spell the end of a relationship, but could initiate a new phase in its development. With a New Moon in your sign facing off with Uranus, a key bond may need more space if it is to develop further Scorpio. Call for more astral advice…
With Mercury turning retrograde, there’s potential for mixed messages, delays and for things breaking down when you need them. Bearing this is mind, try to factor in extra time for those important tasks and meetings. A lively lunation can see you making changes to your schedule. Call for more…
A key lunation in a more private zone can bring a deeper realization of your destiny or purpose in life. Equally, an event could give you a nudge in a new direction. On a social note, Venus’s entrance into your sign may enhance your popularity Archer. Call for more news and advice…
Something you’ve been busy with could become a much bigger part of your life. A New Moon in your sector of leisure and enterprise links with Uranus, which could see you taking an idea or romance further. With Mercury rewinding though, it’s best to handle things step-by-step. Call for more…
Social options could get spicier and more interesting from this week, and it may be because of an encounter that sizzles with potential. It could be a romance, but this might also refer to a friendship that revitalizes your life. Also, you could connect with someone from your past. Call for more…
With a powerful line-up in your home zone, there is the potential for a shift that could revolutionize your work life balance. Plus, as luscious Venus enters your sector of romance, this can be the perfect opportunity to kindle passions and enjoy a love adventure. Call for more advice…
Change is in the air as the New Moon opposes Uranus, encouraging you to explore the potential for working from home either on a part-time or full-time basis. It’s also possible that you may feel like getting out more and finding a job, or even volunteering could be the answer to this. Call for more…
If a brilliant opportunity comes your way, you might wonder whether to take it or not, as it could require a leap of faith. If you opt for a slow and steady approach, then you can do well. With Mercury in reverse though, be prepared for delays and changes to plans. Call for more news…
The urge to step out and explore new terrain can inspire you to take a bold step forward. Something or someone could act as a catalyst that pushes you out of your comfort zone. This might be a cause of disruption, but it can also bring fresh streams of energy into your life. Call for more news…

I’ve been fishing twice this week, for a measly return of just one fish. Admittedly, it was an unexpectedly decent fish from an unexpectedly small venue, but my angling this week has been marred by conflict… I don’t mean the usual conflict, the bellowing shout of “did you mow the lawn first?” from the good lady wife, I mean conflict with other venue users and in truth, it spoiled my week on a place I love to visit. The water is shared with an outdoor activity centre, so I know that a little bit of consideration can go a long way into maintaining cordial relations with both students and staff at the centre, but it cuts both ways. The reservoir in question covers a considerable acreage, perhaps almost thirty five in total, with plenty of room for all, so you can imagine my dismay when seven canoes, each accommodating at least three youngsters put to sea from the nearby ramp. Don’t get me wrong, I accept that they use the lake for educational purposes and waterborne fun, but why invade my bit when there is plenty more to use? I’d set up well away from the designated canoe area and despite there being plenty of anglers on the bank which should have been given consideration by the outdoor staff, I had to politely ask three times for the adventurers to avoid my baited spots as they completely ignored any etiquette and paddled noisily throughout my swim. It wasn’t just the yelling and splashing which disturbed my spots, it the capsizing and subsequent howling as the youngsters flailed about in the water trying to right the upturned craft. I approached the presiding staff member, advised that I was dangerously flinging a couple of ounces of lead, some fearsome trebles and lumps of dead fish about, to be met with reassurance that it wouldn’t happen a fourth time; it did… By now, after almost two hours of incessant disturbance, repeated requests for the canoeists to back off into ‘their’ bit I snapped and hurled forth some rather more agricultural invective towards the latest intruders. This had the desired effect and I was left well alone for the remainder of the morning session, but to my horror, yet more paddlers returned after lunch to conduct similar operations! This time however, aside from one minor incursion, peace prevailed and later in the day I issued my apology to the guide leaders who in turn conveyed their regret to me; a lesson learned for both parties, but shouldn’t it be obvious that a little courtesy goes a long way? It made me think about other times when ignorance and plain rudeness have been apparent on the bank… What really got me thinking was to read that an angler I have the utmost respect for and whom I shall name only as ‘Joe’ had been forced to pack up and relinquish his spot due to the deliberately rude and inconsiderate actions of another whilst fishing a well prepared and active spot. You could argue that a quiet word may have resolved the situation, but it could also result in a punch in the face, so in most instances, discretion can be better

(and less painful) than valour. It saddened me to read of his plight however and made me realise that things aren’t what they used to be when it comes to decency on the bank these days, and I blame the constant ‘catch at all costs’ mentality promoted by the regular angling press, and some of the so called celebrity anglers who have to justify their existence to their sponsors…that, and society in general; whatever happened to ‘The Brotherhood’? I recall an instance at a venue in Cheshire. On arrival, the gate had to be unlocked which entailed leaving your car, opening the gate, getting back in, driving into the car park, parking up, returning to the gate to lock it, and ‘signing in’ to the venue on a slip of paper which was then posted in a box. The last action was to deter litter leavers and those who had seen fit to soil the pegs! As I signed in, I noted another car pull up to the gate and as I still had my keys in hand, I unlocked the gate for my compatriot, held it open with a salutary wave whilst he drove through, then locked it and returned to my paperwork. On posting my slip, I turned around to see the other angler running towards the pool with a bucket in hand! As there were only two of us present, I was somewhat disgruntled by this and on his return, I enquired what he was doing? “Reserving my peg mate” was his offhand reply as he returned to unloading prolific amounts of kit from his car… I wandered down to the lake with my barrow and deliberately kicked the bucket back up the bank and sat in that very peg to set up. He countered with “I’m fishing there, mate” to which I advised him that he wasn’t, and that he should find some manners pretty quickly as I’d just done him a favour, was there first, and didn’t expect to be stitched up by an oik with a poor attitude! I was appalled, but am I wrong? It happened to me again some weeks after at a different water. I was the only angler happily sitting on ten acres, and the new arrival asked if I was catching (I was) and then set up within ten yards of me! To be fair, he did ask where my lines were, but then proceeded to cast two huge method feeders over both in an attempt to get on ‘my’ fish! “Sorry mate, I’ll bring them in in a bit…” Our relationship was short and unsavoury, and an exchange occurred which resulted in him moving a considerable distance away but again, whatever happened to good grace and etiquette? Fishing should be fun, not a competition! It’s not all doom though is it? There are still a majority of genuinely lovely anglers on the bank, and I should know as I’m one of them. I spent an hour taking to 82 year old Tony who I met this week, and had enquired about the water I was fishing as he intended to join our club. I stopped my fishing to chat, describing the lake contours and depths, prevailing winds, directions to access points, parking, which baits worked and much more, and enjoyed a thoroughly pleasant chat with a thoroughly nice chap. Later in the day, having moved to a new venue, I bumped into Howard, an angler I’d met the previous week and with whom I’d exchanged pleasantries. I noted he was fishing with my sponsors bait products so I asked if I could take his picture with the bait for the social media pages. He agreed, and we chatted for a while on the bank. I left him with some freebies to say thank you, and he reported back to me later on that the goodies had worked, and he’d had a bumper day! Great news! Both of the incidents this week demonstrated to me that being courteous and showing a bit of consideration goes a long way. It’s better than being ignorant, rude of obstructive, it can work to your advantage, you might learn something new or make a new friend, or you may be able to pass on some of your knowledge to someone else and make their day better… some food for thought perhaps if you know one of the ‘fish at all costs’ anglers? I think so… tight lines!

WE DIDN’T WIN ENOUGH ONE-V-ONE BATTLES Rotherham United manager Paul Warne reflected on his side’s performance after the weekend’s defeat against Oxford United. The Millers boss pointed to Oxford’s quality across the pitch as his side slipped to a 2-1 defeat at AESSEAL New York Stadium. “We didn’t win enough one-vone battles, that’s probably the nicest way of putting it,” said Warne. “The standout player wasn’t on my team today; he [Fosu] caused us all sorts of problems. Every time he won it back, he got them up the pitch. We just probably didn’t have a similar starlet, really. “With 25 minutes to go, we’re 2-1 down at home and throwing the kitchen sink. It opens it up for the counter-attack, so I’m grateful to my goalkeeper for keeping the score-line
decent. I just didn’t think we finished with enough balls into the box and getting into good positions to cross it but breaking down. “I didn’t think we were strong enough on attacking set-pieces, either. Obviously, goals change games and they were on top and deserved their goal. It’s disappointing someone so small has scored a header against us. Overall I think they were better than us, that’s the honest answer.” Tariqe Fosu opened the scoring for The U’s, before being pegged back by Michael Ihiekwe’s brave header. But the winning goal came early on in the second-half, as Matty Taylor nodded home what proved to the decisive goal. “Our final ball in today wasn’t good enough,” warne continued. “I’ll watch it back and come to conclusions, but it
just fizzled out today. On another day, it might drop and then you might get a goal. We didn’t make their goalkeeper work hard enough, second-half. “I thought Matt Olosunde was our standout player. Smudge won a lot but we didn’t give him enough to allow him to score the goal his play deserved. “We changed the wide-men and thought that would make it work. Sometimes subs work, sometimes they don’t and, unfortunately, it didn’t have the impact that I wanted. “I’m a positive sort of guy, I don’t want
to lose home games or any games, but they didn’t come to sit behind the ball and time-waste – both teams were trying to win and, if you were a neutral, you probably thoroughly enjoyed it. But if we’re going to have a successful season, home games are essential. “At half-time today, I felt we’d go on and win it, the fact we haven’t is disappointing. We’re still three or four points off the play-offs. We’re not depressed about it but we’re disappointed.”

TAKING TAYLOR: GREAT WAY TO BOUNCE BACK Jon Taylor felt the reaction showed by Rovers was the perfect way to bounce back after they picked up their first win in four games on Saturday. Rovers won 2-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium against Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League One, responding well especially after last weekend’s reversal on the road at Oxford
United, and Taylor felt the side’s hard work really paid off. “It was a great performance and the best way to react after the disappointment of last week, we worked hard this week to make sure that we put things right, and I think that really showed out there on the pitch,” he said. “The way we played out there I don’t think
many teams would have been able to cope with us really, we have to make sure that we keep that going and take that into the next couple of games this week. “We work on shape all the time, we’ve had a full week to recover after the disappointment of last weekend, we did a lot of work on the patterns of our play, it was drilled into us throughout the week but you can see it paid off.” Taylor grabbed the second goal in the win over the Gas, responding quickest to Niall Ennis’ parried effort to slot home from inside the area, and he is looking to kick on and help Rovers to push up the table. “I’ve been playing on the left a lot more recently but here I
was able to be a lot more direct out on the right, we got a bit of luck with the first goal after the cross in, and I felt I could’ve created a bit more with a couple other crosses in,” he added. “I feel personally that I’ve done well, I perhaps think I could’ve scored a couple more than I have, hopefully I can go on a run where I can get a couple goals and I can help push the team up the league. “The fans have been excellent to me since I arrived, I haven’t interacted too much on social media so far, I’ve tried to keep away from it for one reason or another, I want to keep my head down and work hard but they’ve been brilliant.”

THE LEAST WE DESERVED Owls manager Garry Monk said a point was the least his side deserved following Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff on Friday night. Defender Julian Borner bagged his first goal in Wednesday colours before Lee Tomlin’s late free kick rescued a point for the Bluebirds. Monk said: “I thought for the first 50 or 60 minutes we were
exactly where we wanted to be. “They wanted to make the game a battle, which is what we expected, and we did very well to control it. “We just didn’t control the last 30 minutes in the same way. “We had enough chances to win that game and for the players to show that spirit and that fight, we can be pleased
with that.” Monk continued: “We were very unfortunate but in the build-up to the goal we made some mistakes. However, there’s a lot of positives to take from the game and a point is the least we deserved. “We created enough opportunities in the final third to win the game and it’s that old adage, you have to take your chances.”

After Liam Shaw and Preston spurned half chances for the Owls, Bolton took control The Owls’ Underand netted twice on 23s went down 4-2 to Bolton on a bleak 15 and 20 minutes. And to cap a crossbar.
The Owls continued in a similar vein in the second period and were rewarded on 55 minutes when Nathan Walley tripped in the box and Hunt sent Luke Hutchinson the wrong way from the spot. The home side pressed hard for an equaliser, which duly arrived on 66 minutes when Preston executed a lovely give and go with Hunt before slamming hard and low past Hutchinson. But just as it seemed the impressive comeback would yield a Wednesday winner, Bolton took charge with nine minutes to go. Sterling swung a deep feed to the back post, where Toure climbed high to bury into the roof of the net.
OWLS UNDONE IN SIX-GOAL THRILLER
Waldock forced Hutchinson into a diving save as the Owls sought another leveller but the odds were only increased when Uroghide saw an earlier yellow upgraded to red for a late challenge on substitute Maxwell Conway. And as they poured numbers forward with the clock counting down, Wednesday were hit on the counter and Brown fired a fine solo goal with three minutes left to wrap up the victory. BLADES DOWN GUNNERS 2019/20 What a night at Bramall Lane! Lys Mousset’s first goal on home soil on his first league start was enough to beat Arsenal in front of the Sky cameras. The French striker applied the finishing touch from closerange in the first-half as United produced arguably their best performance of the season to beat Unai Emery’s side. For the clash against the Gunners, boss Wilder made two changes from the starting XI that drew with Watford before the international break, as Mousset was handed a first league start alongside the fit-again McGoldrick in attack. United were typically quickly out of the blocks and forced a couple of corners inside the opening three minutes. At the other end, the visitors then had a flurry of corners in quick
succession, the last of which left Stevens needing treatment. On 15 minutes, following another Blades corner, Fleck was booked for a foul on Aubameyang. Six minutes later, United had a let off, as a counter-attack resulted in Xhaka played in Kolasinac down the left, but Pepe failed to make a clean connection with the goal at his mercy. But on the half hour the roof at the Lane literally came off, as United deservedly hit the front from Norwood’s corner. O’Connell got up highest at the back post, which gave MOUSSET the opportunity to apply the finishing touch from inside the six yard box. The atmosphere inside S2 was electrifying, although when Saka went down with Egan’s challenge approaching there was a sharp intake
of breath, only for referee Dean to book the Arsenal man for simulation. O’Connell was then carded for trying to halt the progress of Pepe, as the Gunners broke at pace. Two minutes of added time were signalled, and Henderson was brought into action to deny Xhaka from over 30 yards out, before Sokratis headed the resulting corner high and wide, as United went into half-time with the advantage. Arsenal made a change at the break, with Ceballos replacing Willock. Ten minutes into the second period, goalscorer Mousett received a warm applause as Sharp was introduced in his place. The Blades crafted the first real chance shortly afterwards, with Sharp and Fleck combining to free Baldock, but he fired wide from a
promising position. At the other end, Ceballos should have done better, from Saka’s cross. On the hour, more patient play from the Blades ended with Fleck firing an effort at goal, it had Leno, but unfortunately for United it was into the side-netting. McGoldrick and Kolasniac were booked, before Fleck’s stinging effort from distance almost got the better of Leno. In response, Lacazette won a freekick, but Henderson was equal to Pepe’s effort, before United’s number one was scrambling across his goal when the same player shot wide moments later. With the clock ticking down, McGoldrick was replaced by Luke Freeman, before McBurnie was introduced in place of Norwood and within a minute the Scottish international won a
free-kick which saw Sokratis booked. Five minutes of added time were shown by the fourth official and United continued to defend resolutely, as the crowd drove the Blades over the finishing line to register a famous and deserved victory. Blades: Henderson, Baldock, Stevens, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Lundstram, Egan, Norwood (McBurnie 85)
McGoldrick (L. Freeman 78), Mousset (Sharp 55). Unused: Robinson, Jagielka, Moore, Bešić. Arsenal: Leno, Chambers, Sokratis, David Luiz, Kolasinac, Xhaka (Lacazette 69), Guendouzi, Willock (Ceballos 45), Pepe (Martinelli 78), Saka, Aubameyang. Unused: Martinez, Holding, Tierney, Torreira.
BID NOW FOR PROMOTION WINNING CROWD FLAG Blades fans can get their hands on the unique crowd surfing flag that was used towards the end of what was a memorable 2018/19 campaign, with all proceeds being used to support United’s chosen charities. This amazing piece of memorabilia, which measures 15m x 10m dons boyhood Blades Chris Wilder and Billy Sharp, was created for our ‘We Are Blades’ season ticket campaign, prior to our subsequent return to the top-flight. Operations Director Dave McCarthy commented: “Sheffield United is a huge part of the local community and we understand that we have an important role to play in helping others, by doing this auction we hope to raise a large sum of money to help our nominated charities.” The auction, which has a starting price £200, will run until Wednesday 30th October and bids can be made by emailing info@sufc.co.uk

Delighted Sheffield Tigers are heading back to speedway's top flight - for the first time in 30 years! And co-boss Damien Bates says moving into the SGB Premiership is the perfect move in what will be an exciting time at the steel city circuit, with key developments off-track as well. The move is confirmed today, underlining the clubowning Bates family and Peter Mole determination to make Sheffield one of the top clubs in the country despite having to endure two difficult seasons when, following their Championship title triumph in 2017, they then crashed to the bottom of the table and this year were forced to move away from their traditional racenight. The move still has to go before the forthcoming BSPA AGM but is expected to be rubber stamped. It's terrific news for one of
speedway's leading clubs and its supporters. Says Bates: "We believe the sport is on the cusp of an exciting time and we want to be a part of it. "We have had some major successes since we took over from Neil Machin in 2014. That was a hard act to follow but we have been delighted with the trophies that have come our way, especially that title win of two years ago which was something special. "We now feel the time is right to step up, especially with development work at the stadium having now been completed. It's something we have looked at long and hard and we have assessed all factors in minute detail, so it isn't a kneejerk reaction, it's part of a thought-out business strategy. Sustainability has been the key throughout." The decision was made af-
ter long discussions between Bates Family and co-owner Peter Mole. It will mean... • A return to the traditional Thursday race night. Tigers were forced to switched to Sundays in 2019 bringing a mixed reaction from supporters, because the fixed top-flight race days meant Thursday racing wasn't an option. • Massively improved facilities at Owlerton thanks to the new £5 million conference centre built on the first turn. Speedway fans will be able to use the centre which will have prime viewing areas. It all spells bumper news for the club which has spent almost three decades in the second tier, apart from the amalgamation seasons of 1995 and '96. Added Bates: "Sheffield deserve to be in the Premiership and it's our intention to make the team a success. "This is now an opportunity to establish the Tigers as
a blue chip top-end club. We're not going into the Premiership to make up the numbers, it would be daft to think that way. "When we've done the sums, we know we can assemble a team which will compete all the way. We looked at Ipswich this season and they've proved that it can be done. "We're looking at several riders, including some with the wow factor, but what we won't do is gamble with the future of the club for a short-term blast at glory. "The business model we have is all about sustainability, we want to make sure Sheffield Speedway is around next year and the one after that and so on. "The club is now not for sale and will remain in the hands of the current owners as we embark on this exciting time." Tigers will now start planning on the team front while there will be more from Owlerton as developments unfold.
