SOAP STAR JAMIE BRINGS CHRISTMAS MAGIC TO CRYSTAL PEAKS Soap favourite Jamie Lomas will be adding a touch of star quality to the Festive Season at Crystal Peaks. The actor best known for his roles in top shows Hollyoaks, Eastenders and Coronation Street as well as for his appearance on ITV hit I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here, will be at the award winning Sheffield shopping centre for the mall’s official Christmas lights switch on Thursday November 14.

The Festive fun begins in the Crystal Peaks central atrium at 4pm and will feature a range of musical acts including performances by young musicians and singers from Westfield School, Rainbow Forge Academy and Outwood Academy City, with dancing from Razzamataz Theatre School. Hosting the whole funpacked family event will be Hallam FM presenter Simon Morykin. And at 7pm Christmas

will really get under way when Jamie officially flicks the switch and Crystal Peaks sparkles for the Festive Season. “We are delighted that Jamie is able to join us on this very special day in the Crystal Peaks calendar,” said centre manager Lee Greenwood. “Our Christmas light display is always extremely popular and having Jamie perform the opening ceremony will add that little extra sparkle to the evening.”

RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP 2021 INVITES PUBLIC TO JOIN VOLUNTEER TEAM The largest-ever team of Rugby League volunteers will be out in force during Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021), and with two years to go until the start of the tournament, members of the Doncaster public can now register their interest in joining RLWC2021’s volunteer workforce. Two years from last week [23 October], the Rugby League World Cup will get underway in England with Doncaster

hosting three games. The tournament will signal a breakthrough moment for the sport, as the men’s, women’s and wheelchair games will come together for the first time on the biggest stage. In total, 2,021 volunteers will provide the backbone for all three tournaments, and not only can the public now register their interest in forming part of the record-breaking volunteer workforce, they can also etch their

name in history by proposing the official name for RLWC2021’s volunteer team. Anyone who registers their interest in joining the team can suggest a title for the volunteers, who have been known as ‘Team 13’ and ‘The Cup Squad’ at previous editions of the Rugby League World Cup. The top suggestions will be put to a public vote in the new year, with the person responsible for coming up with the winning name receiving

a pair of VIP tickets to the men’s tournament opener at St James’ Park in Newcastle. The volunteer team will form an essential part of RLWC2021, undertaking a number of crucial roles to ensure a smooth delivery and world class matchday experience for everyone involved. There will be a range of volunteer roles available across a number of functional areas, including spectator services, team liaison and hospitality.

“Volunteers will be the backbone of what will become the biggest Rugby League World Cup ever,” said RLWC2021 Chief Executive Jon Dutton. “Previous global events have shown just how integral volunteers are to the smooth running of a tournament. Our volunteers will be the first faces people see when they arrive at stadiums and train

ADVERTORIAL

JOIN US FOR ONE OF OUR TRIBUTE NIGHTS THIS CHRISTMAS It’s always great to be able to get out and see a band. Sheffield is full of wonderful surprises, and you may well have been able to catch some of your favourite musicians in and around the city’s most popular venues. However, have you ever considered catching a tribute night or two in your local area? If it’s something you’ve not considered before, you may be surprised at just how much fun you could have! The OEC is a bespoke party venue, and we play host to scores of amazing tribute acts and evenings across the year. However, some of our most popular tribute band evenings take place over the Christmas period, when offices and workplaces are busy booking their corporate parties. While you may wonder why you’d ever want to see someone copying ‘the real thing’, the stars we host not only look the part, they are amazingly talented! Live music is a fantastic Christmas party staple. We have a house band that helps us during our main Christmas party nights. However, our tribute nights are something a little bit special if you want to make it a night to remember. Bands and Artists Past and Present One of the main reasons why we love tribute nights is the fact that you get access to great performers delivering music from bands and artists who are no longer performing or are no longer together. This means you don’t just get access to an evening of music from

a band or two who play classic songs. You’ll be treated to a fantastic performance by stars who have honed their musical talents to emulate their heroes directly. It really can be uncanny when you see them perform for the first time! We also host tributes to various styles of music which may no longer be on the charts. For example, one of our most popular Christmas evenings is our Motown party line-up, which brings several classics from the 60s through to 80s as performed by professional singers and musicians. It really is like taking a step back in time, and it makes for a fantastic, memorable evening out. What better way to ring in the festive season as well as the New Year? Fantastic Service

No matter which party nights you attend at The OEC, you can be sure of five-star treatment. We offer four-course meals from a big menu of delicious ideas and choices. You’ll have access to a full bar, and we will even furnish you with money off when you arrive. You’ll be able to take in a tribute band and show while you wine and dine in our fabulous venue. Some might say it beats going to a crowded concert or gig elsewhere! What’s more, The OEC is a unique party venue. We are the biggest and brightest providers of specialist party evenings in the city centre. This means you get access to incredible music and the best possible acoustics. You won’t have to strain yourself to hear

each other speak, but at the same time, you will still be able to hear every note played and every lyric sung from the very back. There’s nothing quite like taking in a spectacular show in a venue like this, and we’re proud to bring so many wonderful evenings to local businesses and attendees who fancy something a little bit different. All Your Favourite Acts

We make sure to book a wide variety of different bands and singers for our tribute night occasions. We also ensure to host some of the most talented, hardest-working artists in our local area, as well as those who have experience working up and down the country, and even internationally. It’s our aim to bring the biggest and best tribute acts around to Sheffield’s doorstep. You only have to take a look at our current lineup of acts to see what you could be getting into this festive season. On the run-up to Christmas, we have tributes to Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, Take That, The Beatles, Queen, Motown, ABBA and The Jersey Boys. This is a fantastic line-up, we’re sure you’ll agree – and it’s only set to get more exciting as the months go by! Keep an eye on our website and social media to learn more about other tributes and celebrations we have lined up for you moving into 2020. Why Book Now? It may seem as though our tribute nights are a long way away, but it makes sense to book

your seats as soon as you can. That’s because people are getting involved and getting their tables reserved at The OEC as a priority! We encourage all office parties and other group celebrations to get in touch now to reserve spaces. You’ll be able to book several tables if you wish, but do be aware that, as Christmas approaches, things are going to get tighter on the schedule! Don’t take any chances. Round up your friends or colleagues and club together, deciding on which tribute nights you’d like to experience up close and personal. If you leave it too late, you might never know what you’ve missed! Take a look at our list of nights and party evenings, book in online or get in touch with our team. The OEC – Your Number one Tribute Destination

If you love tribute acts and tribute bands, and fancy treating your friends or family to a unique evening out in Sheffield, The OEC is ready to welcome you. Come and enjoy a night of fantastic music and delicious food, along with access to drinks and dancing. Our venue is built for some fantastic parties and live music – take advantage as soon as possible and book your spaces while you still can! Call our team on 0114 232 0266 to learn more, or do make use of our online booking form. Act fast – as spaces for our tributes are starting to get eaten up, even now. Avoid disappointment and act now!

“HANDY” POPULAR HOME IMPROVEMENT SCHEME

QUOTING ‘THE MERCURY’

Yorkshire Housing offer many services to help people who are not tenants maintain their independence, dignity and security. The housing association’s home improvement agencies (HIAs) support householders in need across the region. There are three HIAs, one of which covers the Stockton-on-Tees area and there is the Swale HIA which covers North Yorkshire. The other takes in Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley and all three offer caring and trusted services to those in need. Low-income, vulnerable or older householders can benefit from a variety of work on their homes. There is a handyperson service for smaller jobs, such as installing ramps and safety rails, and a handytec service for bigger works. Handypersons do DIY and minor adaptations that householders may have been able to do at one time but cannot anymore. The handytec service, mainly through disabled facilities grant funding, helps with major renovations, such as the installation of through-floor lifts. The aim of both is to keep people safe and independent in their own homes for as long as possible. Funding comes from government bodies, charities and other agencies, including Hambleton District Council, the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner and the Gas Safety

Charity hardship fund. One scheme, ExForces Support North Yorkshire, brings this work together for armed forces veterans in North Yorkshire. John Willans, 80, of Northallerton, received help towards a new boiler and new shower that made a great difference to his quality of life. The former signalman, pictured with wife Iris, has complex health conditions that can be affected by the cold. John, who served in Malta and West Germany in the early 1960s, was referred to Ex-Forces North Yorkshire by Age UK. Our needs, advice and support officer Christine Potter administers the scheme. She works with bodies such as Ex-Forces Support and the British Gas Energy Trust (Warm and Well) in North Yorkshire to deliver help. Christine said of John’s case: “It was agreed the existing gas combi boiler and radiators needed servicing to improve efficiency and make the home feel warmer. Mr Willans has enduring sensitive health issues which make him feel cold quickly and the cold can then exacerbate his medical conditions.” But it was discovered during the servicing that there was a serious and potentially dangerous fault with the boiler’s flue. Funding from Warm and Well in North Yorkshire and Ex-Forces Support North Yorkshire helped cover the cost of replacing the boiler. John and Iris were also struggling with their shower, which was too small for

their needs. As with the boiler, funding was arranged towards shower and bathroom alternations that are now complete. John said: “Christine visited, chatted with us and agreed to pay an amount towards the cost, which has greatly helped us. The shower and bathroom alternation is now complete and we can use it every day safely.” He recommended the service and added: “Don’t think about it, just do it. The help is out there – ask for it.” Yorkshire Housing is one of Yorkshire’s largest social housing providers managing 18,000 affordable and social rent homes, with plans to build 3,120 more by 2021. It also provides a range of services to help people live independently in their own homes across the region. For more information visit: www.yorkshirehousing.co.uk.

HOW FAR WOULD £24 PER WEEK GET YOU? HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED How far would £24 a week get you? As part of National Care Leavers’ week (28th October-1st November), Sheffield Care Leavers’ Union is challenging people to live on the average weekly budget that some young people who have recently left care have to spend on food, drink, fun and non-essential travel. The Reality Cheque Challenge has been designed by members of the Sheffield Care Leavers’ Union (SCLU for short), a voice and influence group made up of care leavers aged 18-25, and aims to highlight the struggle that many care leavers face in managing their finances. Sheffield Leaving Care Service provides financial and practical support for care leavers in setting up their home and entering employment, education or training, however this can be difficult for some young people who may also have to navigate the benefits system. The Reality Cheque Challenge asks people to live for five days on the average budget of a care leaver accessing universal credit, who has around £24 to spend after paying for accommodation and essential living costs like household bills. Participants will record their experiences in a daily diary and will also be asked to submit a budget-friendly recipe, which will be compiled into a cookbook to be given to young people as they move into independence. The rules of the challenge include set items that must be bought to reflect the reality of budgeting, including one toiletry item and one cleaning product. Other rules include not being able to use food you already have, apart from ‘store

An exclusive gift was presented to the Council’s Gary Clifton (Major Events Manager) and Wendy Ulyett (Visitor Economy Marketing Manager) by Rear Admiral Jim Macleod, Head of Invictus UK, during a celebration event for the Trials at the Ministry of Defence in London last week. The special Trials t-shirt, which was given in a presentation frame including a gold, silver and bronze medal from the Trials is now in Sheffield and will be displayed in the Sheffield Town Hall. Head of Invictus UK, Rear Admiral Jim Macleod said: “Without the magnificent support of Sheffield City Council and the people of Sheffield it would not have been possible to put on such a successful Invictus UK trials in July. These trials have had a positive impact on over 320 competitors and 500 family and friends as well as leaving a lasting impression on all those who were engaged in running and supporting the event. I would like to personally thank everyone in Sheffield for playing such a pivotal role in ensuring the Invictus UK Trials were a success and for making a difference to so many people; it simply could not have happened without such a welcoming and accommodating city. During the the Invictus UK Trials, in July 2019, more than 300 competitors took part in nine sports, across three different Sheffield venues in five days. The week kicked off with the breath-taking starstudded Big Gig, organised by Sheffield’s music legend Eliot Kennedy and featuring Alfie Boe, Heather Small, Suggs and Laura White. A full programme of cultural events including West End show Soldier On, Art in the Aftermath exhibition, Style for Soldiers exhibition, dance workshops and theatre workshops ran alongside the sporting activities, as well as an education programme throughout Sheffield’s schools, a job fair, rehabilitation symposium and military village. His Royal Highness Prince Harry the Duke of Sussex visited Sheffield during the trails, greeting competitors and their families and talking to Sheffielders along the way, as well as making a stop at Sheffield Hallam University. Competitors and their friends from across the UK stayed in Sheffield for the whole week. Highlights of each day’s sporting events were broadcast on BBCiPlayer and BBC Sport.

Wednesday’s Mind Charity matchday took place on Saturday, as the Owls played out a 0-0 draw with Yorkshire rivals Leeds, to raise awareness of an illness that effects one in four of us. Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson was on hand to support a cause close to his heart, having gone through mental health issues during his career, as he met with Mind representatives prior to kick-off at Hillsborough. Sheffield Mind bucket collectors were working hard around the stadium to raise vital funds to tackle mental health problems in the local community, and they raised a fantastic £594.69 thanks to generous supporters. The matchday came as part of Mind’s charity partnership with the EFL, which they hope will help bring a lasting legacy around mental health in football.

Mind’s own research shows that 56% of people feel that football fans find it easier to show their emotions at matches than at any other time. Despite this the charity also knows that many supporters, particularly men, are likely to be struggling in silence for fear of opening up about their mental health. The charity hopes matchdays like this will begin to open up the conversation amongst football fans about their mental health. Paul Farmer, Chief Executive of Mind, said: “Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem. “That could be one person in every family, hundreds of football players and many thousands of football fans. “We’re delighted that Sam has been so open about his experiences and hope that events like our matchday with Sheffield Wednesday reach out to fans and let them know that whoever you support, Mind supports you.” For more information about Mind’s partnership with the EFL and wider work in football visit mind.org.uk.

ARE YOU HAVING A LAUGH?! Drink Wise, Age Well is staging a free comedy night in Sheffield next month which promises laughs without liquor. Dry Wit will be a zero-alcohol night featuring comedians Jo Caulfield, Archie Kelly and Christian Reilly. It will be held at Theatre Deli, Eyre Street, on 19 November at 7pm. Andy Whitehouse works for Drink Wise, Age Well - a community alcohol programme aimed at people aged 50-plus. He explained: “Comedy nights, and nights out in general, are

often associated with having a few drinks. As we get older, however, alcohol can have an increasingly damaging effect on us. This is why at Drink Wise, Age Well we came up with the idea for Dry Wit. “We want to prove that people can have a great night out without alcohol…and without a hangover! It’s good for our bodies to have a few alcohol-free days each week and to consume less alcohol overall as we get older. Dry Wit could show people how this doesn’t mean their social lives have to suffer.”

Top of the bill will be BAFTA-winner Jo Caulfield who does stand-up comedy and appears as a panellist on Have I Got News For You and Mock The Week. Support will be provided by Phoenix Nights veteran Archie Kelly and musician Christian Reilly. Compere will

be Anthony J Brown. Tickets - which require a £10 refundable deposit - are now available from Eventbrite

TO ADVERTISE CALL 0114 2763701 OR EMAIL INFO@MERCURYNEWSPAPER.CO.UK PHLEBOTOMY COURSES RETURN TO ROTHERHAM Most have experienced it. A doctor says you need some blood tests and a half a dozen stabs and prods later – sometimes more – the doctor has your blood sample and the patient has a sore arm that resembles a pincushion. Many healthcare institutions such as GP surgeries and hospitals now employ phlebotomists to perform the role of collecting blood from both in-patients and out-patients. Skilled phlebotomists – the healthcare professionals who take your blood – are the experts who have been gradually replacing nurses and doctors and who specialise in just collecting blood samples. Phlebotomy posts are usually very flexible and can vary from full and part-time hospital posts to part time work in surgeries and clinics. Geopace Training has built a nationwide reputation for teaching phlebotomy the right way and Geopace tutors travel from across country and even internationally to train phlebotomy students. Each phlebotomy class lasts two full days and at the end of the course students will have attained an accredited certificate in phlebotomy. Students need no prior experience in healthcare and come from all walks of life and all ages. The popular Introduction to Phlebotomy Course provides a very thorough grounding in both theory and practical elements and prepares students up to the point of ‘live blood draws’. “It’s also a lot of fun” says Amy, admin manager at Geopace Training. “Many students email us after completing the course to say how enjoyable it was whilst others email us to let us know that they have been accepted for phlebotomy jobs”. Geopace instructors are some of the most elite in the industry and the training programme is constantly updated to keep up with new developments and changes,

so students receive the most current information and training available. Students attending the course are very hands-on, practicing on artificial arms which pump fake blood, with a choice of veins to perform and practise on. There is also a theory element to complete although there are no exams at the end. Students complete modules as they process through the course and it’s almost impossible for anyone to fail. Once completed the course awards a nationally recognised and accredited certificate in phlebotomy (Level 3 - advanced). If you like the idea of working in the healthcare profession then why not visit Geopace Training’s website for more information at: www.geopace.net Rotherham courses are scheduled for this November (11th &12th) and again in the New Year (29th & 30th January).

FOR TOURING SPECIAL OFFERS SEE WEBSITE www.willowsholidaypark.co.uk

A week of ups and downs for me this time, I’ve been ‘man down’ on the bathroom floor for much of the weekend with a stomach bug picked up from grandchildren, but on the upside, I’m now famous and have caught some nice fish too. The less said about the malaise the better, but on the fame front, astonishingly, I’ve been ‘digitised’ and will feature as myself in a video game! I’ve written for Dovetail Fishing, a gaming platform, for some time, and as a result of that and my association with some well known brands, I was asked to appear in the game which came as a very pleasant surprise! It’s a fishing simulator type game, produced by the same company that devised the fantastically popular (so I’m told) Rail Sim game and is available across PC, Playstation and Xbox formats, meaning that my likeness will be seen by thousands of anglers across the globe! It’s backed by some big names within the angling trade too, such as the mighty Korda, Mainline Baits and others, so it’s nice to be able to sneak in a mention for my sponsors (Spotted Fin, check them out) and see myself immortalised; I just hope they’ve made me a bit taller… and thinner! As part of my in-game persona, I had to name my favourite water, and it was to Rode Pool on the Stokeon-Trent Angling Society that I returned this week in search of roach. I’d heard on the grapevine that it was throwing up some super silver bags and as I love catching roach, I thought I’d take a single rod, a bit of bait, and enjoy a few hours sitting beneath the trees in search of silvers… I arrived to find that I was the only angler on a beautiful estate water, bedecked in all of its autumnal finery, with golds, russets, greens, browns and almost every other colour slowly becoming visible through the morning mist as the lake stirred after a cold, clear night. It really is a gem of a place and a favourite with very good reason… I’d set out with the intention to target roach at range on the feeder, picking a small cage sample to pack with groundbait and fling out to around sixty yards. I was careful to clip up to ensure I hit my spot with each cast, seeking to build a bed of bait to entice fish in. It can be a difficult venue to get to grips with, but in my opinion, the rewards are certainly there for those who stick around long enough to figure it out, so I was hoping I’d chosen the right approach! My mix was simple; half a kilo of Spotted Fin Classic Corn groundbait, with a splash of Classic Corn syrup added to the lake water which bound it. I added nothing else to start, hoping that the carefully prepared mix would explode from the feeder as it hit the water and get the ever-inquisitive roach searching for something more substantial. On the hook, a single kernel of corn, again glugged in the same syrup just to add a bit more zing; nothing complicated at all…

Rode is a shallow pool, and in autumn can be affected by leaves so I wanted the bait out of the feeder before it had time to plough into the detritus where it would be hidden. A dryish mix ensured this and as soon as the feeder whacked into the water, I could see a small cloud of yellowy goodies erupt out to provide interest. Within seconds, a twitch was followed by a positive pull and the first roach, a beautiful thing of perhaps half a pound, came skittering towards me; perfect. Regular casting saw regular bites and between watching the tip and the nearby pheasants and woodland birds I watched strike after strike from pike patrolling the nearby reed line. In truth, I’d never seen so many active predators and fully expected to lose a few roach to itinerant marauders, but for some reason I got away with it as a steady stream of silvers were netted. There were very few fish of less than four ounces with the majority all of double that size, but sadly without any of the much bigger roach which are rumoured to reside within, but I was still happy enjoying the sunshine trying to hit lightening fast bites on the tip…what better way to spend the day? A couple of hours in, and the swim went quiet. I wasn’t too worried, it’s a regular occurrence here, so I kept up the casting, kept the bait going in, and continued to indulge in my surroundings. I noted a tiny tremble and my hand hovered over the rod ready to strike again when the tip absolutely rocketed around, and I snatched the rod up quickly. My clutch had been set slackly to provide some insurance for a light hooklink and small hook, and I watched as line spilled away and the reel unwound ominously… I considered that I had perhaps hooked a big bream for which the venue is also popular, and as the fish plodded towards the far bank with just an odd thud to accompany it, I was convinced this was indeed the case until the pace quickened suddenly and a long lean shape leapt from the water… a pike… on sweetcorn! I couldn’t believe that my hook had found purchase away from the teeth but after a long five minute scrap, the pike, a fish obviously of double figures, was almost within netting range and I could see the barbless size 16 just in the scissors of its jaws. It was not to be; as I lowered the net into the water, the inevitable happened and the fish rolled over the hook link and it parted, twanging my feeder back into bankside reeds and the fish bolted off back into the lake… I would have loved to have seen that fish on the mat, especially on such light tackle; never mind! The swim switched back on, and yet more roach picked off the corn as it settled, and the tip continued to go around with monotonous regularity. Another wrenching bite saw a single tench of perhaps four pounds netted, and a few skimmer bream got between the roach but overall, my bag consisted of nothing but good sized fish, all immaculate, all silver, and all what I sought and I finished with a hefty bag of prime roach. It was soon time to go however, and after packing up, I spent a pleasant few minutes talking to other anglers about their day before leaving as the bats started to circle; a perfect end to a perfect day on the perfect water… I’ll definitely be back soon as winter is the perfect time to try and pick off a specimen roach, and I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather do it… Get out there and fish through the winter months, if you hang up the rods now you’ll be missing out on some of the best fishing there is!

WE NEEDED TO BE MORE CONFIDENT Rotherham United boss Paul Warne assessed his side’s display after a 1-0 defeat at home to Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon. The visitors held on to their fifth minute lead as the Millers failed to generate any momentum throughout the 90 minutes. “I think we beat ourselves a little bit today,” said Warne. “We had a few underperformers today, which is regrettable because after our midweek display, back-to-back wins would have put us possibly third with a game in hand. “It was a good opportunity for us and, if we’re going to have a successful season, we need to get back-to-back wins. Today we didn’t. They got a goal early

and frustrated us. We didn’t play at our best and didn’t switch the ball enough and played down the same side a bit too much. In fairness to Wycombe, credit to them they came here and did a job on us. They’ve taken the points, which they fully deserve. “Our performance just wasn’t good enough. In fairness to Wycombe, they played at Blackpool Tuesday night which isn’t a short journey for them. If we’d have looked jaded towards the end of the game, it’s not an excuse from the start. After we went a goal down, we didn’t look confident. That’s a worry and it’s our job as coaches to put the confidence in the lads. “I just felt we lost our way a bit today, which was disappointing.” The Millers failed

to force opposition goalkeeper Ryan Allsop into a save on a wet and miserable afternoon at AESSEAL New York Stadium. “We’ve had a discussion with the lads in the dressing room,” he added. “If our home form was anywhere near our away form, we’d be absolutely flying. I am making excuses and it is a young team that will get better as the season goes on. But they’ll only get better if they perform and

win football matches. “We didn’t force their ‘keeper into any saves. The best chance was Smudge’s header first half. Smudge himself would expect to hit the target but I felt all the setpieces, we never got second contact and sometimes you need a ricochet but it just wasn’t to be today. I’m disappointed with the goal we conceded and conceding at home early on added to the pressure.”

THOMAS RELISHING ROVERS OPPORTUNITY Kwame Thomas says that it has been a challenge to return to the EFL after the striker spent more than two seasons in non-league. The former England youth international got off the mark with two goals against Southend United on Tuesday night and he is hoping to use his time at Rovers to prove a few people wrong. “It’s been a hard path back to the football league. I was grateful

to get the opportunity to be here and it feels surreal and such a blessing to be playing and scoring goals,” he said. “You’ve got to believe in yourself. Even with everything I’ve been through, I’ve always believed in myself. I continued to put myself out there and it was great to get this opportunity, hopefully, I can use it to prove a few people wrong. “There are a lot of down times in football

and for someone like me you can see that blatantly where I’ve dropped down levels or not scored goals. That experience is character building, I’m stronger mentally than I’ve ever been, and I think that experience will work to my advantage. “Six weeks ago, I was without a club, sat at home checking all the results on the weekend. I didn’t know if I was going to League football or non-league, so to

be here scoring goals with the fans chanting my name – you can’t dream of anything better than that. I’m delighted, but I’m focused on getting more of that in future games.” Thomas also said that he felt Darren Moore was the right manager to get the best out of him. “The manager has been brilliant with me since I’ve arrived here, I respect absolutely everything he says and any decision he makes,” added Thomas. “I believe in perfect timing and I believe I was brought to this club for a reason. I know he’s the right manager in the right place for right now. “The gaffer tells us that it’s about improving as players and therefore improving as a team. If I can do that, and the manager sees that then hopefully I can be here past January.”

TAYLOR: I’M REALLY ENJOYING MY FOOTBALL AT ROVERS Jon Taylor feels he is thriving in the Rovers side after joining the club in the summer. The Rovers’ no.10 got the second goal in a 2-0 win at home to Bristol Rovers - his second of the season following August’s winner against Lincoln City - and he contributed to Rovers’ 7-1 win over Southend. Taylor says he is loving every minute at the Keepmoat Stadium so far. “The players in this team are excellent, and they make it such a good place to play and such a good team to play in, I’m absolutely loving it, there was so much relief when I got my goal here because I know I could’ve had more this season already,” he said.

“You’re always going to get chances in this side, the two Bens in midfield are always going to find the right pass, but the rotation of that front three to find the pockets and the positions we work on every day is unbelievable. “The way that we play in this team, we’re always going to get chances in front of goal, it’s so enjoyable to play in and I’m really loving my football at the minute, especially when you have a day like we’ve had here.” Taylor made the short journey down the M18 to sign for Rovers in August having left rivals Rotherham United earlier in the summer, and he feels the free-flowing football under Darren Moore

is something that is improving him as a player. “I feel like with the chances I’ve had I could be pushing six or seven goals so I’ve been kicking myself a little bit, but I’ve been working hard every day in training, doing loads of shooting, and I hope now that will pay off,” he added. “The gaffer and the other coaches work on it every

single day and we all learn so much from them all, we know if we get in the positions they say to then we’re going to get the ball and create chances for everyone. “It’s so different for me to come in and play in a team like this, I’ve never really played in a side like it before I think, it is just so enjoyable to play in, hopefully now we can really kick on.”

LOCAL FOOTBALL County Senior Leagues with Michael Clarke

Sadly the bad weather continued into the weekend and led to the mass postponement of most of the league’s games that were scheduled for Saturday. League Cup 2nd Round Goals from Tim Council and Mitch Savage were enough to give AFC Penistone Church a 2-0 win over Burngreave FC Reserves on Wednesday night. Penistone will face Sheffield Medics away in the third round. Premier Division Penistone’s week got better on Saturday as they climbed to the summit of the Premier Division. Goals from Callum Lee and James

Stafford (2) gave Penistone a hard-fought 3-2 win over in-form Wakefield AFC at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium. A hat-trick from Innocent Enos Huly inspired Jubilee Sports to an emphatic 8-2 away win over Burngreave FC. Remarkably there have been 30 goals scored in the Jubilee’s last four games. Division One There were another eight goal scoreline in Division One, as Handsworth FC Reserves beat Ardsley Athletico 8-0, with goals from Samuel Eccles, Rene Marsden, Mohammed Saeed (3), Jack Waddle and Logan Chappell (2).

GREAT ADVERT FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP After a pulsating derby contest that had everything but a goal, Garry Monk praised his players and the performance. Giving credit also to Leeds, the Owls’ boss hailed the game as a credit to the Championship. He said: “It was a great advert for the Championship, with two good teams, and I was proud of that

performance. “Leeds are a good side and we forced them into playing long balls out of defence in the second half because of the pressure we put them under. “I don’t really know how we haven’t scored a goal today but Leeds had chances as well. But we dominated the second half and I couldn’t have asked

for any more from the players.” Monk issued updates from the treatment table after Julian Börner was forced out of the action having suffered an injury in the warm-ups. Massimo Luongo was also missing from the squad after picking up a knee strain in midweek. Monk said: “Julian rolled his ankle and it was a blow but we

recovered from that very well. Sam has played centre half before and he did very well today, as did Joey in midfield. “Massimo was close but he has some swelling on his knee so we had to leave him out. We’ll have him assessed over the coming days and it will be the same for Julian.”

TIME TO KICK ON Adam Reach has reflected positively on a busy period for the Owls. Wednesday enjoyed a productive October and sit three points off top spot heading into this weekend’s clash with Blackburn. The Owls’ mettle was put to the test last week with three tough fixtures, starting away at Cardiff, before facing back to back home games with Stoke and Leeds. A trip to Rovers is next up on Saturday and full of praise for the squad, Reach said: “We’ve got to kick on now after a busy period, we’ve had three tough games

and we’ve taken some good points.“The games come thick and fast, you have a couple of days where you can get your rest in before another busy period again. “But we’ll be ready for it. I think we’ve proven to everybody that we can be right up there come the end of the season.

“The players themselves have got to take a big amount of credit and I think we’ve done brilliantly to be where we are in the league.” The 26-year-old added: “We’ve stuck in there, we’ve got ourselves in a good position, the manager has come in and he is someone

who is improving every player everyone can say they’ve improved in some area under him. “We need to keep that going, there is plenty more work to do and plenty of positives so far but there are areas that we can improve and we are always striving to get better.”

TYKES TAKE CONTROL OF 23s DERBY Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23s could not come back from Barnsley’s impressive start and went down 3-0 on a chilly afternoon at Bracken Moor. First half strikes from Samuel Fielding and Luke Thomas put the Reds two goals to the good and the visitors withheld fierce Owls pressure to add a third deep into stoppage time. Wednesday actually started the brighter with midfielder Conor Grant going close twice in as many minutes. First the midfielder was played through by Fraser Preston only for the alert Samuel Radlinger to smother before Grant pounced on a defensive error only to see his effort cleared off the line by Clarke Oduour. But it would be Barnsley who would break the deadlock on nine minutes after Jordan Barnett whipped a cross in to find Fielding at the back post to head home. Wednesday responded through Preslav Borukov whose shot whistled wide and Liam Shaw went close as the hosts knocked at the door. However, the Young Owls would be left to rue their missed chances as Barnsley doubled their lead on 19 minutes. Elliot Simoes cut inside along the 18-yard line before finding Thomas,

who found the bottom corner to put the Tykes firmly in control. And the Reds were almost out of sight before half time if not for the quick-thinking Ciaran Brennan to clear Malik Wilks’ shot off the line. Wednesday began the second half with a slice of good fortune as Jordan Green’s cross was almost diverted into his own net by Liam Waldock but they began to take control around the hour-mark and Borukov almost caught Radlinger off guard from range. Render’s sliding clearance then found Jordan O’Brien, who was lively after coming on, and he set up a chance for Shaw but the midfielder just couldn’t get the ball out of his feet. Fraser Preston’s effort from outside the box flew over the bar and Shaw shot marginally wide before Barnsley hit back with a super Render save thwarting Callum Styles. And it was the visitors who had the final say as substitutes Romal Palmer and Jordan Helliwell combined to set up Schmidt to blast past Render. Wednesday: Render, Hughes, Brennan (Thompson 76), Lee, West, Uchegbulam (O’Brien 58), Shaw, Waldock, Preston, Grant, Borukov

BLADES DISH OUT HAMMER BLOW A Lys Mousset strike earned United a deserved point in the capital after a 1-1 draw against West Ham United. A stirring second half showing from the Blades saw Chris Wilder’s side come from behind after a Robert Snodgrass opener, to level thanks to a low strike from the Frenchman, who bagged his second goal in as many games. The Blades had the better chances in a first ever meeting with the Hammers at the London Stadium, as Wilder’s side stay unbeaten on the road this season. Wilder made one change to the side which beat Arsenal as striker Callum Robinson replaced Mousset in attack. In a quiet opening 10 minutes, the hosts threatened briefly when a low cross from deep by Snodgrass just eluded the stretching Andriy Yarmolenko, whilst Dean Henderson punched clear a dangerous Snodgrass centre from the near side a few moments later. United showed some intent on 19 minutes when Robinson played David McGoldrick in down the right, but as the ex-Preston striker piled into the area looking for a centre, his compatriot sent the cross

too deep and the home side cleared. The first attempt of note arrived on 23 minutes. Felipe Anderson picked the ball up midway inside the United half, and after advancing forward he accepted the invitation to shoot, but Henderson wasn’t troubled as the Brazilian’s effort flew over. United gradually started to grow into the contest and were presented with the best opening on 28 minutes. In the build-up, Issa Diop was booked for a late challenge on McGoldrick, as George Baldock’s cross was turned behind for a corner. John Fleck delivered from the far side towards Jack O’Connell who rose to nod down into the direction of McGoldrick. The Irishman flicked an effort towards goal from six yards out but home ‘keeper Roberto made a block, and a ruck of home shirts then denied John Lundstram with the follow up. McGoldrick then threatened on the counter for United but his surge into the West Ham half was halted by Pablo Zabaleta. From the resulting free-kick, McGoldrick peeled away towards the back post to meet Fleck’s cross, but his header

was comfortably held by Roberto. On 41 minutes United created another half chance. Good work by Ollie Norwood and McGoldrick helped to develop the attack, as O’Connell then crossed on the overlap into the near post where Lundstram turned his effort wide. A minute later and United were presented with another opportunity. Lundstram’s cross from the right was totally missed by the flying Roberto, but the ‘keeper’s presence in front of Robinson was enough to distract the striker who mis-directed his header with the goal empty. Enda Stevens’ attempted follow up was then deflected wide. Against the run of play, the hosts then took the lead with a minute of the half remaining. A long punt forward by Roberto was headed clear only as far as Yarmolenko whose first-time pass put Snodgrass through, and he drilled the ball low beyond Henderson. The Blades countered at the start of the second half through Fleck who drove into the heart of the home defence. After feeding the ball wide to Lundstram, his low centre arrowed into the direction of Robinson, but the Hammers made a crucial clearance in the

six-yard area. At the other end, Norwood made a terrific block from a Yarmolenko effort as the game started to open up. United were denied again with another good opportunity after a clever flick from Lundstram at the by-line released Fleck who crossed the far post. Baldock was waiting and after steadying himself with a touch, his fierce drive was somehow kept out by Roberto who knew little about the save. Wilder then threw Sharp into the fray, replacing Robinson 10 minutes into the second stanza. The game was now end-to-end, with United having Henderson to thank for keeping it at 1-0 after a low save to deny Anderson as West Ham almost profited from Norwood being dispossessed. Baldock saw yellow for a late challenge on Declan Rice just before the hour, becoming the first United name into the book. The chances kept on coming for United, as Baldock fired wide after great work by Fleck and McGoldrick. Fabian Balbuena was also booked for an attempted foul on Fleck in the build-up. Wilder made another attacking change on 64 minutes, replacing

Norwood with Mousset. Sharp had the ball in the net from Chris Basham’s cross, but the flag had long since gone up rightly for offside. United were on top and finally the Blades’ pressure told with a well-deserved equaliser on 69 minutes. The Blades kept alive a cross from the right from Baldock, and as the hosts failed to clear, Stevens headed the ball down for sub MOUSSET who volleyed accurately into the bottom corner for his third goal of the season. West Ham responded

with Henderson quick to smother an effort from Aaron Cresswell at the back post, which was quickly followed by a save from distance from the boot of Rice. The Hammers missed a golden chance inside the final 10 minutes as a cross through the six-yard area found Snodgrass who hit the outside of the post at full stretch. Late on Stevens saw yellow just after Yarmolenko had fired wide with a shot from distance.

QUARTET GET IRELAND CALL Four United players have been named in Mick McCarthy’s Republic of Ireland squad for next month’s Aviva Stadium double-header against New Zealand and Denmark. John Egan, Enda Stevens, Callum Robinson and David McGoldrick are all named in McCarthy’s extended 39-man provisional squad for the two games, with the friendly against the All Whites on Thursday 14th November, coming four days prior to the Euro 2020 qualifier with the Danes. McGoldrick comes back into McCarthy’s plans, having missed out against Georgia and Switzerland through injury earlier this month. The squad is expected to be trimmed down following the weekend’s fixtures.
