SHEFFIELD’S BIG CITY CONVERSATION IS ON TRACK Sheffield’s Leader and Deputy Leader took to Stagecoach Supertram last week to talk with local people and get the Big City Conversation on track, as the citywide survey goes live online. Sheffield City Council recently started The Big City Conversation across Sheffield. It’s a chance for people in the city to get involved and have a say on the things that matter to them. The council want to hear from as many people as possible, of all ages and
backgrounds, from every part of Sheffield, about the issues that affect them, their communities and their city. Those who want to get involved can complete an online survey at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ bigcityconversation The survey will take just a few minutes to complete and will ask people about how they want to tell the council (and partners they work with) about the things they need, the things that affect them, and how they feel they can influence decisions
around these issues. In the last month, events have taken place in the Moor Market and the Town Hall, where councillors, Cabinet Members, and employees saw hundreds of people and got lots of feedback on things about Sheffield. Leader of Sheffield City Council, Julie Dore and Deputy Leader, Terry Fox hopped on to the Stagecoach Supertram blue route, which travels through several communities across the city, making a round trip from the
city centre to Hillsborough. Councillor Fox said: “We’re out on the tram today because this route passes through several communities and we want to go to the people, not make you come to us. “The Big City Conversation is about us hearing from as many people as possible so that we can better understand our residents’ needs and how they want to talk to us. “Due to the General Election announced this week we’ve had to put our plans to go
out in to communities on hold, but we’ll be out there in every part of the city once it has taken place. “Everything that people tell us is useful and important and I hope we’ll get thousands of responses to the survey. We appreciate everyone who takes the time to get involved and help us make this city the best it can be.” The council will hold events in every area of the city after the General Election in December. Information will be shared about events in the community once these have been arranged. MAGICAL FESTIVE PERIOD LINED UP FOR DONCASTER
A six-week long programme of Christmas activities – the whole family can enjoy – starts in Doncaster town centre on Saturday, 16 November. The spectacular Countdown to Christmas event will take place throughout the day and into the evening in the Market
Square. It includes plenty of Christmas themed activities and entertainment to get everyone in the festive spirit. Children can see Santa in his grotto in the Wool Market, and enjoy all the fun of the build up with funfair rides and festive street entertainment. Carol singers will add a special touch to the
Christmas shopping experience while bang-less fireworks will illuminate the sky. Visitors will see the streets come alive as the town centre is lit up in ways never done before and of course, it wouldn’t be a traditional Christmas day out without mulled wine (alcohol free) and hot chestnuts. Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for
Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said: “We have a packed line up of festive attractions and events on the run-up to Christmas and it all kicks off with the Countdown to Christmas launch event. We aim to bring buzz, excitement and Christmas joy into the town centre to encourage residents and visitors to come along to enjoy the

#FOLK PROSTATE CANCER PENISTONE PARAMOUNT HOSTS TWO DAY CHARITY EVENT Following the success of the Folk Prostate Cancer Concerts in November 2018, raising an incredible £7000, Penistone Paramount are delighted to welcome back Damien O’Kane, Pure Records and friends for the two day event #Folk Prostate Cancer on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of November. This year’s event features the great and good of the fold world including new talent and established stars such as Ralph Mctell and Kate Rusby The support last year was enormous with two sold out shows in one day and this year is set to be even better. Damien has pulled together a world class cast of folk legends, however what is key here is raising awareness of Prostate Cancer, raising money for such a great cause and saving lives. What did little Johnny’s mother do when she caught him zapping the other children with static electricity? She grounded him. Someone broke into my house last night and stole my limbo trophy. How low can you go? What do you get if you put a duck in a cement mixer? Quacks in the pavement. What’s large, grey, and doesn’t matter? An irrelephant. For my birthday, my kids got me an alarm clock that swears at you instead of beeping. That was a rude awakening. A guy walks into the bank, pulls out a gun, points it at the teller and screams, “Give me all your money or you’re geography!” The teller says: “Don’t you mean history?” The robber replies: “Don’t change the subject!” A pessimist sees a dark tunnel. An optimist sees light at the end of the tunnel. A realist sees a freight train. The train driver sees three idiots standing on the track. What has 4 wheels and flies? A garbage truck. I was in a band during the 80s called The Prevention. We were better than the Cure. What’s the difference between a cranky two-yearold and a duckling? One is a whiny toddler and the other is a tiny waddler.

RETIREMENT LIVING IN LUXURY AT JACOBS GATE
QUOTING ‘THE MERCURY’
A selection of spacious apartments designed exclusively with retirement in mind are coming soon to Jacob’s Gate. Currently under construction on Troutbeck Road, the development will feature a privately-owned range of 65 spacious one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Contemporary accommodation There are plenty of thoughtful touches and services available to make life a little bit easier too. The apartments have been designed with later life in mind and every detail, from the height of the door handles to the layout of the bathroom has been considered to make everyday life safer, simpler and more comfortable for homeowners. Each of the private apartments will include generous living areas and contemporary fitted kitchens with integrated appliances. Many have stylish en-suite shower rooms and separate bathrooms, and for that allimportant outside space, most apartments feature a walk on balcony or patio area, overlooking the beautifully landscaped gardens. A community on your doorstep This new, high-end, development will offer the best of both worlds. Homeowners can enjoy the privacy of their own peaceful and spacious apartment, spend time in the leafy gardens (which are maintained by an expert team of gardeners), relax in the hair salon, therapy room or lounge and then invite their friends over to enjoy the table service restaurant, without having to
think about cooking or washing up. Peace of mind Adlington’s real point of difference is being able to offer round the clock, 24-hour on-site support, and tailored care should it ever be needed, in the future. By offering optional and flexible care, homeowners and their families have peace of mind, which is cited as one of the key reasons why so many people choose to invest in an Adlington apartment. Security is of paramount importance and a sophisticated emergency call system operates in each apartment and throughout all the communal areas and gardens, as well as a security video entry so you only allow access to people you know. Moving made easy Adlington go the extra mile to ensure the journey to retirement living goes as smoothly as possible, by offering

through several communities and we want to go to the people, not make you come to us. The Big City Conversation is about us hearing from as many people as possible so that we can better understand our residents’ needs and how they want to talk to us. Due to the General Election announced this week we’ve had to put our plans to go out in to communities on hold, but we’ll be out there in every part of the city once it has taken place. Everything that people tell us is useful and important and I hope we’ll get thousands of responses to the survey. We appreciate everyone who takes the time to get involved and help us make this city the best it can be.” The council will hold events in every area of the city after the General Election in December. Information will be shared about events in the community once these have been arranged. All information about the Big City Conversation, including the survey is at www.sheffield.gov.uk/bigcityconversation Also, as part of the Big City Conversation, the cross-party Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee are working with the Deputy Leader to look at different approaches to how the Council makes decisions. The Committee, chaired by Cllr Mick Rooney, has launched a Call for Evidence which invites citizens, organisations and leading experts to give their views on good local decision making and the strengths and weaknesses of different systems. The Call for Evidence is open until the 17th November and the Committee will report its findings back to Full Council on 8th January 2020.
COUNCIL PLANNING FOR WINTER ROAD ISSUES
The council’s highways contractor is getting ‘winter ready’ in preparation for icy conditions over coming months. With 19 gritting vehicles already on standby, 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week until next May, the teams at Streets Ahead are fully prepared to keep the city moving through snow events, should they arrive. And with the colder temperatures starting to creep in, the gritters have already undergone their annual service to make sure they are in shape for the winter maintenance season. Sent out when ice or snow is predicted on the city’s hilly road network, the gritters spread grit and plough before, during and after it snows. In addition, Sheffield’s two salt barns are already full in preparation for dealing with whatever the weather may have in store. Melissa Wise Operations Director for Streets Ahead explains, “We grit over 60% of the highway network here in Sheffield – a higher percentage of roads than many other local authorities. As well as a team of drivers being on hand ready to take to the roads when the bad weather arrives, we also have a good stock of salt which is used to keep the city moving in snowy conditions. Our gritters have state of the art technology which includes automatic routing, like a Sat Nav, as well as automatic gritting programmes. These all help to improve our gritting service as the navigation system guides the driver along the pre-programmed route and the spreading of grit happens automatically, without manual input.” This year, the Streets Ahead winter mascot Yolly the Yeti will be sharing his top tips for driving safely on our roads during

NOTHING TO BE SCARED OF Pop icon Adam Ant performs his landmark solo album ‘Friend or Foe’ live in its entirety for the first time, alongside a hand-picked selection of classic chart-topping singles and personal favourites, across the UK in November and December 2019 , including a date at Sheffield City Hall this Friday. The ‘Friend or Foe’ album was Adam’s first release as a solo artist and included three hit singles. The massive hit ‘Goody Two Shoes’ reached Number One in the UK, was also Number One in Australia and hit Number Six in the USA Billboard Chart. ‘Friend or Foe’, the single, was another top ten hit in the UK
while ‘Desperate But Not Serious’ was the album’s third UK smash. ‘Friend or Foe’, his most successful solo album to date, made Number Five in the UK and was certified gold album status on both sides of the Atlantic after selling over 100,000 copies. In the USA, the album reached Number 16 on the Billboard Album Chart and turned Adam Ant into a household name, resulting in a Grammy nomination for ‘Best New Artist’ and an MTV Award for ‘Sexiest Man Alive’! From his early punk days in London to his explosion on the world stage that would lead to him becoming an icon, Adam Ant’s musical career spans the course
of nine albums and 22 chart-topping singles worldwide. At one point, Adam had eight singles in the UK Top 40 in one week! His 1979 debut album ‘Dirk Wears White Sox’ was the first Number One album in the UK Independent Albums Chart. The follow-up album ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’ that featured his trademark burundi beat style of African drumming spent 12 weeks at Number One in the UK and was the bestselling album of 1981. The ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’ album produced three charttopping singles, ‘Dog Eat Dog’, ‘Antmusic’ and ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’, and won Adam a Brit Award for ‘Best New Artist’. On its day
of release, the smash hit single ‘Stand and Deliver’ went straight to Number One, and remained at the Number One top spot in the UK Singles Chart for five weeks, earning Adam two prestigious Ivor Novello Awards for ‘Best Songwriter of the Year’ and ‘Best British Record’. As ‘antmania’ continued to sweep the nation, the ‘Prince Charming’ album produced yet another Number One single ‘Prince Charming’ and firmly established Adam Ant as a global star. This week has been tough. I’ve endured three sessions for a very measly return… I’m blaming the rain, after all it can’t be me can it? In truth, my local venues have suffered, the recent deluge has put a couple of feet of extra water on most of them, and indeed, some are barely accessible due to flooding, but I’ve had to scratch the itch, so I’ve been out in search of pike again… My first visit of the week was to Cheshire venue Astbury Mere on the Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society card. It’s a favourite of mine and contains pike in excess of 25lb, reputedly bigger, but until I’ve weighed one, I’m loathe to subscribe to hearsay but see no reason why it shouldn’t. I returned to ‘Double Reeds’, a roomy peg offering both open water and cover, and dropped two baits in within twenty yards of the bank. Despite regular changes of bait and position, I couldn’t get a bite, so after a fruitless few hours, gave up and went home. The day wasn’t completely wasted as I spent some of it taking some rather fetching product images for my brand supporters, but sadly couldn’t add a catch shot to the portfolio! The third session was also a tough one. A smaller water was targeted, a pool of perhaps an acre which I know contains some hefty predators, and once again, two baits were despatched into the depths to try and tempt a toothy adversary. I sat all day watching motionless indicators, drinking copious amounts of tea trying various permutations to no avail. The pike just weren’t interested, so I started to pack away my gear as dusk fell. Obviously, at that point, the line pulled away from the clip and I watched braid unravel off the spool as a pike moved away towards the centre of the lake. I lifted the rod skyward, felt a good solid thump at the other end, and commenced battle with a decent fish… for about thirty seconds, then it was gone… The hooks hadn’t found purchase, so another day passed without success… I’ve missed out the second session so I could finish with a fish. I had a few hours spare before an appointment with five grandchildren (do you see why I fish now?) so snatched up a lure rod and set forth to explore an estate lake where I’ve only ever fished with deadbaits previously. With over three hundred yards of bank to wander, I set out at the top end of the lake, flinging various bits of rubber about without success. It’s a shallow lake so retrieves have to be fairly swift to prevent the lure catching the lake bed, but a couple of hundred casts saw absolutely no interest! Once I’d reached the far end of the water, I switched over to a floating surface lure as I’ve lost plenty of roach to marauding predators as they have been recovered and I hoped it would provoke a strike by a waiting snapper. A couple of hundred more

casts saw only one tentative follow, and the pike stopped when it saw me and bolted away from me; not a good result… I moved on to explore another water, one I knew to be flooded, but I was hopeful that I would be able to make the bank somewhere on the perimeter. I parked up, and from the car park, I could see that it was even worse than I feared with flood water sitting across the surrounding fields, so I left the rod in the van and walked down to look at the situation. Despite the mire, there were two anglers on the bank, and a carp had been caught. The water was up at least two feet, but surprisingly clear and with rod close to hand, I couldn’t resist and after exchanging pleasantries, I retrieved the rod and my other tackle and stomped back down to the water’s edge… I’d selected a bright white/gold shad and threaded it onto a suitable jig head to give casting weight to hit the marginal shelf of the central island. I worked a fan shaped attack on the first peg, varying the depth, speed and type of retrieve, but still couldn’t buy a bite. The lure became stuck on a snag, and after finally freeing the hook by ‘twanging’ the braid, my rubber shad had been shredded and needed replacing. A green/red ‘perchy’ lure was substituted, and I moved around the lake to the next few pegs in turn. An hour in, still nothing and in truth I was getting very frustrated and vowed to have just five more casts before going to my rendezvous with the kids. With just two casts left, the clouds overhead parted and the sun shone down into the depths so I could just about make out the bottom of the lake as the water cleared. I saw my lure move from shadow to light, and as I made it skip up off the bottom, I was astonished to watch a reasonable pike slide into view immediately behind it! It stopped directly astern of my lure, half in shadow, half in light, and I could make out every mottled shade as it weighed up my offering. Pike move extremely fast during an attack and after a brief millisecond of consideration, the gills flared, the gaping maw opened and my ‘perchy’ victim was sucked into the cavernous chops as the teeth bit down! The pike turned instantly in an explosion of spray as my hook found purchase and the fish tried to dislodge it at point blank range! Playing a pike on braid at close range can be unforgiving, but luckily the hook held and after a minute or two of scrapping, the pike lay on the mat. Was it a big fish? Not really, probably just in double figures although in immaculate condition, and a very pleasing fish on fairly light tackle. Swiftly unhooked, I lofted my prize for the usual ‘grip ‘n grin’ picture before resting it in the net in the margins to recover fully from where it eventually sulked away back into the shadows… I never tire of releasing pike, watching camouflaged backs slide back into the depths and getting soaked by impudent flicks of the tail as they disappear from whence they came… they really are an awesome apex predator, I just wish I could catch more of them! Maybe next week I’ll have more to report, because I’ll be back on the bank hoping for a bit better luck; see you there!

THEY GAVE ME THE PERFORMANCE I ASKED THEM FOR Rotherham United boss Paul Warne was full of praise as his players ‘stood up and were counted’ as they prevailed as 3-0 winners over Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium on Saturday. After an early penalty miss, Michael Smith made amends with a goal seconds after his spot kick was saved by Jack Bonham before Matt Crooks added a second in classy style. After weathering some home pressure following the restart, Warne’s men were out of sight as Crooks bagged a second late on to fuel their Sky Bet League One campaign with a further three points. Speaking after the game in Kent, Warne hailed his side for their triumph in tough conditions. “We were really good. We’re in good away form. I thought Gillingham put us under some pressure in the second half as we expected,” he beamed.
“The conditions were difficult, is the best way to put it. The wind sometimes took it past us and sometimes it held it up, so it caused us a bit of difficulty to win the first ball and Gillingham kept trying to turn us. “I asked the defenders to stand up and be counted and my goalkeeper was excellent and whenever there was a bit of pressure we dealt with it well. “We got in a few times first half but there was a war of attrition for the first 15 minutes in the second half but because we had a two goal lead it was no skin off my nose. “We were quite happy with the way the game was going and Crooksy got his second goal, so well done to him. I thought Jamie Lindsay was outstanding today and he covered virtually every blade of grass. “That’s the thing with pens, I was never brave enough to take one, so I’m not going to criticise. I spoke to him
[Smith] at half time and he said he caught it sweet but the ‘keeper guessed the right way and made the save. Joe Mattock and Trevor Clarke were both forced off with injuries during the game at Priestfield Stadium but Warne was pleased with the impact made by those coming on from the bench. “Unfortunately we had a couple of injuries so we had to shuffle the pack but the subs came on and did well, so they’re really happy in there, they’ve got a victory Monday, so they’re buzzing.” Warne concluded by explaining that he has
asked his players to give soon-to-depart kitman Steve McVann a performance to be proud of at his final game in post, before paying tribute to Crooks’ sublime goal in the first half. “Overall, I’m really proud of my group. My Kit Man, Steve McVann, who is a top man is leaving, so I asked the lads before the game to give him a performance because it is his last game. I asked them to give him a performance to make him proud and they did so,” he explained. “As soon as he hit it I thought with the wind it

MOORE PLEASED WITH BATTLING SPIRIT Darren Moore felt his side did well to earn a 2-2 draw against Burton Albion in Sky Bet League One. Rovers twice came from behind to secure a point at the Keepmoat Stadium, and the manager says he was pleased to take something from the game. He said: “It’s a point
won and we didn’t play as well as we could have done, but credit to Burton they came here and stuck to their game plan. “Sometimes you look back at games and there are ones where things don’t go your way but you managed to take something from it. “There are contributing factors
that may have prevented us from performing as we would have liked to on the day.” Both Rovers’ goals came quickly after falling behind, and Moore says that shows the belief within the group. He added: “We felt that we gave away the ball for both goals and got punished but the
response of the team was excellent. “We showed good fight to score quickly and I thought towards the end we were the team that looked more likely to get a winner. “It wasn’t to be in the end and it probably would have been harsh on them, we take a point and move on.”
BINGHAM ENJOYED ROVERS DEBUT Rakish Bingham said it was good to be back involved in the game as he made his Rovers debut in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Burton Albion. The forward joined the club on Friday and was thrust straight into Sky Bet League One action as Rovers pressed for a winner inside the final 10 minutes, but despite not being able to help claim the win, Bingham was pleased to be back in action. “It was good for me to get out there for a little bit, I just wanted to help them team as much as I
possibly could to try and nick the win, I just want to build on this now and hopefully be a bit more involved,” he said. “We went down twice and showed resilience to come back both times and get a point from the game, on the balance of things I think it was a good point, we weren’t at our best and let them in to it, but we still managed to grind out a result. “When you come on you just want to ease yourself into the game, try and get up to the tempo and really make an impact on the match, I tried to help
out as much as possible but unfortunately it just wasn’t to be.” Bingham’s deal at the Keepmoat Stadium runs until January, and he is keen to make an impact in the side in order to force Darren Moore to give him a longer contract in the New Year so he can be a part of a big season for Rovers. “I’ve been in with the group for over a week in training, the gaffer said he wanted me to sign and I didn’t have to think twice about it, it’s a great bunch of lads, a great club, and they’re really on the up,” he added.
“I feel now is the right time for me to test myself, League One is another challenge and I want to stake my claim in this league, this is a brilliant team that I want to be involved with and I think this is the right opportunity for me. “I only have a short deal at the moment but it’s a good chance for me to show what I’m really capable of, and ultimately my aim is to try and earn a longer contract in the near future, hopefully I can play my part in what I think can be a big season.”
had a right chance and it went and dropped in and it was a sweet feeling. Crooksy has got that, he’s got an eye for a goal and that’s why he’s leading the goalscoring charts. “I’m just really pleased with how we played, away from home especially because sometimes you just have to ride the storm for 10 or 15 minutes.”
LOCAL FOOTBALL County Senior Leagues with Michael Clarke
It was another wet Saturday afternoon in the region, however the heavy rain caused less damage than in recent weeks. The weekend’s main focus fell on cup competition, with a number of League Cup 2nd 3rd Round games and the first games of the season in the Brian & Judith Bradley Memorial Trophy. League Cup 2nd Round There was an unbelievable game at Silkstone Recreation Ground between Silkstone United and Athersley Recreation Reserves of Division Two. The game was remarkably 6-6 after 90 minutes, with Athersley’s eventually winning 8-6 after extra-time to set up a 3rd Round tie away against Oughtibridge WMSC. Extra-time was also needed at Frecheville Sports & Social Club, after Frecheville and Denaby Main were tied 2-2 after normal time. Frecheville were 3-2 winners after extra-time, and will face Division One high-flyers AFC Dronfield in the next round. Goals from James Byford, Harry Steeple and Andrew Wright gave Houghton Main a hard-fought 3-2 win over 10 man Hepworth United at Far Lane. Houghton Main will face last year’s winners North Gawber Colliery or Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves next. 3rd Round Premier Division leaders AFC Penistone Church booked their place in the Quarter-Finals after a 4-2 win over Sheffield Medics at Norton Playing Fields. A hat-trick from Daryl Smith inspired Wombwell Main to an impressive 4-1 away win over Wakefield AFC. Simon Chadburn was also on target for Wombwell. Goals from Owen Fieldsend, Justin Greenwood, Wragg League (Over 35s / Over 45s) with A. Royston
It’s Cup Day when teams can forget the League and try to advance in the cup. In the League Cup Penistone Church were involved in a cracker of a game against Joker Over 35s, but Penistone managed to stay strong till the end and run out 5-4 winners. Beechill 3, Deakin 2 were on the mark for the winners. Jokers scorers were Roberts 2, Bielby and McVeigh. Royston Oakwood seem to have solved their early season problems and are now on a good run, they travelled to play Rossington Main and came away with a 2-1 victory, Telford scored for the losers. Swinton Athletic had a ding-dong battle with Caribbean Sports that ended 3-3, so it was on to the dreaded penalty shoot out which Swinton won 5-3 - Cook 2 and James scoring for Swinton in the 90 mins. West End Terriers felt the full force of the HSBC Bank attack when they met at West End’s ground. Bank were comfortable winners by 9-0 - Cronin 3, Husband 3, Lowe 2 and Hattersley. Dronfield Town beat Hollingwood Old Boys 3-2, thanks to goals from Ashton 2 and Ireland. Another 3-2 result was for Denaby United who beat Hemsworth Miners - Haines, Parkinson and Thompson scoring for Denaby.
Enzo Guarini and Regan Kelly gave Swinton Athletic a 4-0 home win over Sheffield FC Reserves. Also in the Quarter-Finals are Handsworth Reserves of Division One, who were 9-1 winners at Olver’s Mount against Swinton Athletic Reserves. Handsworth will host Wombwell Main next month in their Quarter-Final. Brian and Judith Bradley Memorial Trophy 1st Round South Kirkby Colliery of Division One claimed a Premier Division scalp in the shape of Burngreave FC. South Kirkby were 5-1 winners at home against last year’s Division One winners. South Kirkby will play Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 in Round Two. New Bohemians and Wombwell Main Development could not be split after they tied 2-2 after 120 minutes. However, Wombwell claimed their place in the 2nd Round with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory. There Wombwell will face South Elmsall United Services of Division Two, who beat Sheffield Union 3-1 away on Saturday. Bank End AFC of Division Two beat Division One’s Arsdley Athletico 2-0 at Barnsley Academy School to assure their 2nd Round place. Division One The top two met at Gosforth Fields, with second placed AFC Dronfield hosting leaders Wombwell Town. First half goals from Bradley Kerr and Joe Oliver were enough to give Wombwell a 2-1 victory and take them three points clear at the top.
Division Two Four goals from Will Kemp inspired 10 man Kinsley Boys to an entertaining 7-3 win over Houghton Main Reserves. James Green, Luke Griffiths and Leo Holbrook were also on target for Kinsley. One result which was a bit of a shock was Dinnington Town’s win over high-riding Sheffield Academicals. Dinnington have been struggling a little over the first few weeks but they found some form in this game winning by 6-1, Thomson 2, Toseland 2, Holmes 2 were their sharpe shooters, Kavanagh pulling one back for Academicals. Bullcroft beat Mosborough Trinity 4-3, scorers for Mosborough were Fiddell, Driver and new signing Anderton. The Elsecar Crown game, East Herringthorpe Doncaster game, and High Green Vets and Plough Rangers were all called off waterlogged pitches. 45s Topham Cup Prelim Round Ring O’ Bells lost at home to Phoenix to the tune of 5-2, Woods grabbing a brace for Bells. The Dronfield Teams were drawn together in the Cup Dronfield Town (blacks) against Dronfield Town (reds) it was the reds that ran out winners by 4-2, with goals from Butler 2, Leatherday and Beaton. Brothwell and Potasu. 45s DIVISION 2 Plough Vets and Denaby United drew 3-3 Watson, Carritt and Johnson scoring for Plough.

MONK: ‘IT HURTS BUT WE HAVE TO MOVE ON’ Garry Monk said Wednesday will learn from their 2-1 defeat to Blackburn at Ewood Park after two late goals cost the Owls dearly after taking the lead with six minutes to go. Substitute Jacob Murphy scored his second goal in Wednesday colours to put the visitors in front but strikes from Tosin Adarabioyo
and John Buckley earned an unlikely win for Rovers. Monk said: “It was a tough one to take today. We came up against everything we expected in the build-up to the game. “We knew it would be a tough test, but we did well for majority of the game and earned the lead. “From that position we shouldn’t have lost the game, but
individual errors and a lack of concentration have cost us the win. “These things happen in football, but we know we can learn from this and make sure that it doesn’t happen again. “It hurts because we knew exactly what kind of game to expect. We knew it would be tight for an hour before opening up and the
substitutions worked well. “We got into the lead and it looked as though the points were ours but a lack of concentration has cost us. “It’s very uncharacteristic of us, it’s the first time I’ve seen it, but we have to learn from it, dust ourselves down and be ready for Swansea next Saturday.”
OWLS BOSS ISSUES BANNAN UPDATE Owls manager Garry Monk provided an injury update on Barry Bannan following Wednesday’s trip to Ewood Park on Saturday. Bannan was left out of the squad for the clash with Rovers but the Wednesday boss says he expects the Scottish international back in training for the start of the week. Fellow midfield man Massimo Luongo (knee) will also be assessed after missing the Owls’ last two outings against Leeds and Blackburn. On Bannan’s absence from the team at the weekend, Monk said: “Barry had a little tightness in his groin
in the week. “He didn’t quite make this game but he’ll be back in training at the start of the week. “Barry is a big miss. He has that quality, we all know what he can bring to the team.
“But I thought we did exactly what we prepared for. Players are missing throughout the season, for whatever reason, and you have to deal with that. “The players did
exactly what we prepared for, and that’s probably what hurts even more. We knew it was going to be a hard, physical game. We had to be ready for that.”

BLADES BREEZE PAST BURNLEY Three first-half goals, including a brace from man of the match John Lundstram were enough to secure another three Premier League points. The Blades controlled the game from start to finish, with John Fleck also on target, as United extended the current unbeaten run to four matches, by comprehensively beating Burnley. For the clash against the Clarets, boss Wilder made one change from the starting XI which drew at West Ham, with Mousset replacing Robinson in attack, otherwise it was the same 18 that were on duty at the London Stadium. The Blades forced a couple of early corners with O’Connell and then Fleck the ones driving the visitors back, although neither led to a clear-cut chance. Basham then advanced, but his low cross just evaded the run of Mousset. It was United doing all the attacking, but after a Lowton slip, McGoldrick couldn’t make a clean contact with the ball from a promising position. On 17 minutes, the Blades deservedly hit the front and an team excellent goal it was too. Stevens
freed McGoldrick down the left, his low ball into the box was flicked on by Mousett and LUNDSTRAM, who had timed his run perfectly, was there to slot home past Pope at the back post. Ten minutes later, the Lane had a nervous wait following Burnley appeals for a penalty. But after a VAR review, referee Hooper indicated for play to resume, after it was adjudged O’Connell hadn’t deliberately handled the ball after it dropped from McNeil’s cross. Much to his annoyance, Tarkowski was the first player to be booked for a late challenge on McGoldrick. And United compounded his frustration further by scoring twice in as many minutes before half-time. Firstly, Stevens combined with McGoldrick before his low cross evaded everyone and allowed LUNDSTRAM to slid home his second at the back post. The crowd hadn’t even taken their seats before, FLECK burst through on goal following a slid rule pass by Mousett, before keeping his composure to fire low and hard past a stranded Pope. The opening moments of the second period
were quiet, although Barnes should have done better when firing over from close range for the visitors. In response, the ball fell kindly for Stevens on the edge of box, but his goal bound effort was deflected behind for a corner, from which Egan couldn’t make a clean connection with his header. As the hour mark approached, it continued to be the Blades pushing forward, but this time Pope was equal to McGoldrick’s header from O’Connell’s deep cross. Unsurprisingly, Mousset, who had a hand in all three goals, received a warm applause as he was replaced by Sharp. Burnley then forced a corner, but Henderson had his angles right to deny Tarkowski at the back post. McGoldrick robbed Cork on halfway before advancing forward and freeing Sharp, only for Pope to deny the substitute with his feet. There were 16 minutes remaining as McBurnie was introduced in place of the excellent and hardworking McGoldrick. Jagielka for Egan was United’s final change, with the defender appearing to be in some discomfort. Lundstram had his
sights firmly on the matchball as he advanced forward down the right, but having cut inside he fired over from the edge of the area. The clocking was ticking in United’s favour, but Basham was cautioned for a infringement involving Vydra. Another break led to another chance for Lundstram, this time Stevens freed Sharp who in turn laid the ball into the midfielder’s path, but his effort drifted wide of the far post, but it mattered not as the Blades safely saw out the three minutes of added time to claim another deserved home success. Blades: Henderson, Baldock, Stevens, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Lundstram, Egan (Jagielka 79), Norwood, McGoldrick (McBurnie 74), Mousset (Sharp 64). Unused: L. Freeman, Robinson, Moore, Bešić.
Burnley: Pope, Lowton, Cork, Tarkowski, Mee, Barnes, McNeil (Brady 59), Hendrick, Westwood, Rodriguez (Vydra 78), Pieters (Taylor 45). Unused: Gibson, Hart, Lennon, Bardsley.
SHEFFIELD UNITED ANNOUNCE PLANS TO OPEN MEADOWHALL STORE Sheffield United are delighted to announce plans to develop a retail offering at Meadowhall Shopping Centre, which will open in time for Christmas trading. The Blades have seen success both on and off the pitch securing promotion to the Premier League from League One in just three years. This new retail opportunity will afford new and existing fans greater access to a wide range of Blades merchandise. United's head of retail, Lisa Crossland, said: "The new store will be located in the Gallery, just off the Meadowhall High Street, and will stock Sheffield United club merchandise, including home and away replica kits, a great collection of branded fashion, training wear, as well as a comprehensive range of gifts and souvenirs.' Ever since it opened in 1990 on the site of a former steelworks, Meadowhall has grown to be one of the top five UK retail destinations. The centre has recently had a £60million refurbishment and attracts over 25 million visitors annually. United's head of commercial, Paul Reeves, added: "We are delighted to be extending our retail operation to Meadowhall, as the club continues to invest in its retail infrastructure". This will be the clubs first venture into Meadowhall in a bid to make our retail offering more widely available to supporters across the city. The opening of the store will also provide multiple job opportunities from retail assistant through to assistant manager positions. For those interested in joining the Sheffield United staff team.
