OLYMPIC LEGACY PARK PROJECTS TO PROVIDE £60M BOOST TO AREA The revitalisation of the former economic powerhouse Attercliffe is taking further significant steps thanks to the new plans. A series of developments at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park are set to provide a £60m boost to the Attercliffe area of the city. Attercliffe, which is home to much of Sheffield’s engineering past, is set for a quadruple boost with the announcement of schemes including a major mixed-use development proposed for the nearby Adelphi
square site, comprising bars, restaurants, shops, housing, a themed meeting venue, workspace and a branded hotel. There are also plans for the redevelopment and expansion of the Banners building, now home to law firm Wosskow Brown, on Attercliffe Road as well as a new 100-bedroom hotel created by The English Institute of Sport Sheffield. The hotel will be centred on the needs of athletes and para-athletes and support staff who use the facilities at Sheffield
Olympic Legacy Park, helping to attract more Olympic and Paralympic squads to the city. Work will also start in December on an improved Community Stadium, currently used by Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Club and Sheffield United Women Football Club. “We are seeing the regeneration and redevelopment of Attercliffe as a result of the expansion of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park,” said the Rt. Hon. Richard Caborn, project lead for Sheffield Olympic

DONCASTER COUNCIL FEATURED IN WORLD WAR I COMMEMORATION Elmfield Park, adjacent to Doncaster’s Cenotaph War Memorial, has been put forward to become a designated area of protected space for years to come. As part of a UKwide World War I remembrance – more than a century on from the Great War Doncaster Council is taking steps to honour the memories of those
soldiers who fought and died in conflict by designating the park as a Centenary Field. This designation, as part of a national commemoration programme by Fields in Trust, will ensure it will remain available as a recreational space for the community forever. The park was officially opened on the 12th of March 1923, the same day as the Cenotaph
which honours the towns fallen was unveiled. A council spokesperson said: “We are delighted to participate in the Fields in Trust Centenary Fields programme to publicly demonstrate our gratitude to the World War I generation in this unique way. “Protecting Elmfield Park means our local community will always have somewhere for play, sport – or a quiet
moment of reflection and we are pleased to mark the protection of parks and green spaces across the UK in the WWI commemorations.” Fields in Trust’s Centenary Fields project is working in partnership with The Royal British Legion to protect parks and green spaces in perpetuity as an innovative way to honour the memory of the World War I
servicemen and also those, military and civilian, who played their part on the homefront to build a better life for the benefit of generations to come. Tim Phillips, Chairman of Trustees, Fields in Trust said: “We congratulate Doncaster Council for nominating Elmfield Park as a Centenary Field. It will be included forever in our national programme

My wife told me to take the spider out instead of killing him. Went out. Had a few drinks. Nice guy. He’s a web designer. Where did Noah keep his fish? In a multi-storey carp ark. My wife told me, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you mop or sweep in my life!” Me: “Floors are beneath me.” My girlfriend dressed up as a policewoman and told me I was under arrest on suspicion of being good in bed. After 2 minutes all charges were dropped due to a lack of evidence. I was really angry when I found out that my buddy Mark stole my dictionary. I confronted him and said: “Mark, my words!” For the 10th year in a row, my coworkers voted me “the most secretive guy” in the office. I can’t tell you how much this award means to me. If I had a dollar for every time I didn’t know what was going on, I would be like, why am I always getting this free money? All my colleagues at work call me “Mr. Compromise.” It’s not my first choice of nickname, but I’m ok with it. I dig, you dig, we dig, they dig, he digs, she digs.... It’s not a beautiful poem - but it’s deep.
If I had to get rid of one part of my body, I’d get rid of my spine. Sometimes I think it’s holding me back.

RETIREMENT LIVING IN LUXURY AT JACOBS GATE A selection of spacious apartments designed exclusively with retirement in mind are coming soon to Jacob’s Gate. Currently under construction on Troutbeck Road, the development will feature a privately-owned range of 65 spacious one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Contemporary accommodation There are plenty of thoughtful touches and services available to make life a little bit easier too. The apartments have been designed with later life in mind and every detail, from the height of the door handles to the layout of the bathroom has been considered to make everyday life safer, simpler and more comfortable for homeowners. Each of the private apartments will include generous living areas and contemporary fitted kitchens with integrated appliances. Many have stylish en-suite shower rooms and separate bathrooms, and for that allimportant outside space, most apartments feature a walk on balcony or patio area, overlooking the beautifully landscaped gardens. A community on your doorstep This new, high-end, development will offer the best of both worlds. Homeowners can enjoy the privacy of their own peaceful and spacious apartment, spend time in the leafy gardens (which are maintained by an expert team of gardeners), relax in the hair salon, therapy room or lounge and then invite their friends over to enjoy the table service restaurant, without having to
think about cooking or washing up. Peace of mind Adlington’s real point of difference is being able to offer round the clock, 24-hour on-site support, and tailored care should it ever be needed, in the future. By offering optional and flexible care, homeowners and their families have peace of mind, which is cited as one of the key reasons why so many people choose to invest in an Adlington apartment. Security is of paramount importance and a sophisticated emergency call system operates in each apartment and throughout all the communal areas and gardens, as well as a security video entry so you only allow access to people you know. Moving made easy Adlington go the extra mile to ensure the journey to retirement living goes as smoothly as possible, by offering

It has been woodland vanish to make way for building work, raining for what feels like a year now, and woodland of which the roots support and cement I’m heartily fed up with it! I have the utmost the nearby riverbanks, and when removed causes sympathy for those who have been truly affected by devastating floods and as a former collapses and even more obstruction… It’s wrong and needs to stop. Without properly resourced swiftwater rescue instructor/operator in the Fire Service, I know the utter loss that the and funded infrastructure, the issue is bound to weather must be causing, and really, the lack get even worse! of fishing opportunity becomes insignificant… During my time on the 999 frontline, I often As anglers, we have a voice and it’s imperative despaired when undertaking flood relief. I that our representative bodies such as the remember an incident at a pub, the river had Angling Trust continue to speak up and lobby burst its banks and was flowing through the Parliament to make improvements to our pub… in through the bar, and out through the waterways. Never mind the massacre of fish by back. The cellar was full of stinking, filthy, otters, cormorants, mink, goosanders and who freezing water, the snug was waist deep and the knows what else, if we allow this to carry on, to landlord implored us to get the pumps going and accept it, then the problem will never go away clear it out. We were standing in the and more catastrophe will ensue… fisheries river which had gone from a few yards across will be lost and whilst that may not seem an to covering thousands of acres as it continued to important part of the ‘bigger picture’, remember that this is a livelihood for someone, to provide a rise! The only place we could pump it too was facility for your pleasure; we need to speak out to back into the river and even with the biggest protect them! pump in history, nature would have laughed in Whose fault is it though? I’ve seen a lot of our faces! I also recall the tears, sadness and invective aimed at the Environment Agency upset caused for homeowners who had been recently, accusing them of failing to maintain woken in the night to find furniture floating, the waterways, also at the Highways Department electric off, and bitterly cold water slowly rising for failing to clear drains, at the Government up the plaster… It ruins houses, in fact I’d argue for failing to provide the money and even at it’s easier to clean up after a fire than a flood, and the emergency services and Armed Forces for whilst it continues to happen, something needs not having either resources or the aptitude to to be done! be able to sort it all out which I find very sad. Every time it happens, the cost of the damage The Environment Agency I fear will get some of the blame however; I know that maintenance caused runs into millions of pounds, and insurers of rivers, drains and canals is sadly lacking, once stung, won’t help again, so where does that and that fishing club requests to dredge or clear leave the home or business owner? Ruined, that’s waterways of debris often falls on deaf ears where. There is no other way to describe the due to a lack of funding. Highways are at fault devasting cost to lives and families, and in my too; how often during periods of heavy rain opinion, the Government HAVE to start and get have you witnessed water flowing straight over a grip of things; the buck stops with them. It has to go need to stop building houses in stupid places, somewhere, and more often than not it collects they need to properly fund the agencies who can in the hollows, usually right outside a dwelling help to prevent, mitigate and reduce the amount which becomes flooded as drivers create wave of flooding damage and it needs to happen now. after wave in passing… If not there, it hits the Anything else is lip service, and more people roadside fields, adding to the already sodden ground and causing the rivers to swell even more will suffer… You may argue that it’s solely down as it finally drains down into them! to climate change, but I’d have to disagree. I I believe that Government housing plans have to honestly believe that by correct management of waterways, infrastructure and a proper strategy for building new homes, much of the problem could be ‘washed away’ and people wouldn’t lose their lives, businesses and homes because of the weather… It’s going to cost an awful lot of money to resolve or alleviate the problem, but at what price to the country and our communities if we NEW AND USED FISHING TACKLE don’t spend it? Can we afford not too? It’s now STOCKISTS OF ALL LEADING BRANDS election time, so start asking the question… what COMPETITIVE PRICES ON MAGGOTS, WORMS, CASTORS, PELLETS are WE going to do about it? WARNE PLEASED AS HOME WIN MOVES MILLERS INTO PLAY-OFF PLACES Millers manager Paul Warne caught up with the press following his side’s 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley at AESSEAL New York Stadium at the weekend. “I think we’ll play a lot better,” said Warne. “I thought, first-half, we were good. We caused them some problems. Carlton took his goal really well, it was a good header. But we needed that second goal, really. “They put us under a lot of pressure in the second half. We had to defend a lot and it felt a bit edgy. But we’ll play a lot better and that and lose. I’m not complaining. At the end of the season, it’s three points which is the same as a 3-0 win. “To go down to 10 men, the lads showed real character. I felt the fans really helped when we went down to 10. They got behind the team which was good. We
will play a lot better than that. We’ve gone up to sixth and I still don’t think we are all guns blazing. “Hopefully, we will improve and can have a good season.” The match was soured as Chiedozie Ogbene was shown a second yellow card for an alleged dive when he nipped in to win the ball deep inside his own half, meaning the winger misses next week’s visit to MK Dons. “Obviously I’m a long way away,” continued Warne. “I’m not sitting on the fence because I wouldn’t defend the indefensible. I thought we won the free-kick. I thought Chieo just got there and felt contact then went down. The ref was a lot closer and I have to respect the fact he has seen something. I haven’t watched it back. “It’s a big blow for him. But it’s the next man up and if the next person
does well he’ll have to fight his way back in.” The only goal of the game arrived on the stroke of half-an-hour, as Ben Wiles’ free-kick was powered home by the head of Carlton Morris. Warne continued, “As a forward force, Crooksy has got sore groins and wasn’t as effective as he has been in recent weeks. Carlton was a bit of a threat in the first half but Chieo was a biggest threat. He likes to keep things simple and he put a lot of crosses into the box. We
probably should have scored off one after three or four minutes which would have settled our nerves. “We got three points and I hope the fans go home happy. But they’ve been through the ringer. “Three points are essential. Three points at home count the same as away. But we have to send our fans home happy. I would have liked to have played a lot better. But they’ve (Accrington) taken three points off some really top teams this season and you can see why.”

MILLERS ON HAND TO MARK 100TH BIRTHDAY WITH LIFELONG FAN AND WW2 VETERAN FRED Ahead of our Remembrance Day fixture against Accrington Stanley, Rotherham United were delighted to help lifelong Millers fan and World War II veteran Fred Adamson celebrate a milestone birthday. Club legend John Breckin was on hand to join Fred at his
house in Conisbrough on Friday (15th November) to surprise him on his 100th birthday. Breck arrived armed complete with a shirt signed by the Millers first team before sitting down to enjoy a brew and recount Rotherham United memories of old, before Fred proudly
showed off his medals and equally impressive birthday cake. As is customary when reaching 100years-old, Fred was quick to show off his card from the Queen before once again getting back to chatting to Breck about his favourite Millers’ teams from years gone by, while his grandsons Andrew and Phillip Knight joined in the conversation from the comfort of the living room. Club consultant John Breckin was delighted to be chosen as the Rotherham United ambassador to mark such a significant birthday for a lifelong Miller, speaking after the visit on Friday afternoon. “It was a real pleasure to meet and spend time with Fred on such a special day,” he told www. themillers.co.uk. “His passion for the Millers was clear and he had some fantastic stories and memories to recall from the last
century, which even included my days as a player. “It was particularly interesting to see Fred’s medals from his time serving this country and he was incredibly proud to have received his card from the Queen, while his birthday cake was absolutely phenomenal. “We were absolutely hooked when Fred was telling us the stories from his time in the war, especially one involving a cigarette tin which actually saved his life by stopping a bullet by centimetres! “He was made up that we had taken him a shirt signed by the lads but it really was the least we could do for someone who has supported the club so passionately for all those years. “On behalf of everyone at Rotherham United, I would like to wish Fred a very happy 100th birthday.”
SADLIER BELIEVES HE IS LEARNING A LOT AT ROVERS Kieran Sadlier is looking forward to a run of games after Rovers match vs Shrewsbury Town was called off due to the international break. It has been ten days since Rovers last played so Tuesday’s Emirates FA Cup replay against AFC Wimbledon has come at a good time to prevent Rovers from going a full fortnight without a competitive match. “Obviously we didn’t want a replay, we wanted to win down there but - in the sense that we haven’t got a league game for two weeks - it is good to have one on Tuesday,” he said. “We haven’t had much time off since the first game. We’ve just been trying to make the week as normal as possible – we’ve been back in for the last two days preparing
“We’ve had a few games off so it’s a bit stop start but the next international break isn’t until March so we’re hoping the weather holds up so we can get a good run of games and build some momentum.” Sadlier is Rovers’ top scorer this season scoring seven times across all competitions including a goal in the last three consecutive Sky Bet League One matches. “I want to score and create goals and I like the pressure of having to do that – I feel I thrive under that pressure,” he added. “I’ve gone upfront and played there a few times this season but that was new to me and something I’d never really done before. I’ve been pleased with my goal return when I’ve gone up there so that’s something I’m learning. “I’m relatively young but at any age you can learn new things and new ways of doing things. I’m learning every day on the training pitch – different ways to play, receiving the ball at different angles, and trying to improve my game.”

IT’S GREAT TO BE INVOLVED Having featured for Scotland at youth level, the idea of playing international football for the seniors was one that never left Liam Palmer. And now he’s living out those dreams, the Owls academy product is revelling in every second of it. Palmer earned his fourth international cap on Saturday as
Scotland defeated Cyprus 2-1 in Nicosia and the Owls defender was in line to play again on Tuesday at Hampden Park against Kazakhstan. Speaking of his experiences of senior international football, Palmer says the learning opportunities are endless and he explained: “Scotland has been great for me. I’m
looking forward to getting more caps. “Last year we went to Kazakhstan. It was a seven-hour flight and the time difference was crazy so it’s something you have to learn to deal with on the spot. “It’s a case of sometimes sleeping when you might not be that tired but know you need to get some in. “To be fair, even
when it is the international break, training is still tough whether I am here or with Scotland, so it’s not like I’d be having loads of days off if I wasn’t away. “There are players like Scott McTominay and Andy Robertson who are doing great and that’s another one of the reasons you want to go away — you want to play with the best players in
world football. “Obviously Andy has been in back-to-back Champions League finals and to say you share a dressing room with someone of that calibre is great — you learn a lot as a full back as well. “He’s the captain and he leads by example on and off the pitch. It is a real inspiration to be around him — he has that relentless desire to perform
at the top level. It’s something that you can draw upon and try and do yourself. “Scott McTominay is playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world in Manchester United, and you’ve got a lot of other Premier League lads and Scottish Premiership lads that are doing well weekin, week-out too. It’s good to be involved in that group.”
U23S REPORT: WEDNESDAY 1-1 WIGAN
senior players the chance to store valuable minutes under the belt during the international break, as Wednesday named an experienced side. Cameron Dawson had the gloves, Tom Lees, David Bates, Ash Baker and Jordan Thorniley at the back, while Moses Odubajo took up a more advanced role down the right and Fernando Forestieri in attack. There was little in terms of chances at either end inside the first 20 minutes with the visitors unable to really trouble the Owls’ experienced defensive line. At the other end, it was Odubajo who conjured the first meaningful chance of the game. The former Brentford man brought a high ball
down in the box and struck just wide of the far post via a deflection. Wednesday continued to press and Liam Waldock saw his effort cleared away from danger from Alex Hunt’s ball into the box. But for all the Owls’ possession, the hosts were largely limited in terms of clear-cut chances. Just shy of the half hour mark, Wednesday were forced to reshuffle when Thorniley went down with a knock and was replaced by midfielder Ben Hughes, with Oduajo dropping to right full back. The change didn’t affect the flow of the game as Wednesday continued to see plenty of the ball but were hit with a sucker punch five minutes
before the break. Crankshaw converted low past Dawson from close range in the Kop net to give the Latics a half time lead. A similar pattern unfolded after the resumption as Preston stung the palms of Wigan goalkeeper Dan Gyollai after 55 minutes, but the Owls did find a way through to goal just before the hour. Hughes battled well in midfield to win the ball back for Waldock to release Odubajo down the right, who fed the ball across goal for Shaw to hit high into the net. A touch of class from Forestieri almost unlocked the door for an Owls’ second moments later as Odubajo
centred, the Owls ace arrived in the middle but saw his bicycle kick saved by Gyollai. The Latics struggled to halt the threat of Odubajo, who time and again gave cause for concern on the right flank. This time, Odubajo fired in another dangerous ball to pick out the onrushing Shaw but the youngster’s touch was heavy and the ball ran to safety. As the minutes ticked
down, Wigan began to enjoy their best spell of the half, albeit without testing Dawson. The Under-23s are next in action against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Tuesday 26 November, 7.00pm.
Wednesday and Wigan shared the spoils on Saturday lunchtime at Hillsborough in the Under-23 Professional Development league clash. Ollie Crankshaw broke the deadlock for the Latics just before the break but Wednesday got back on terms through Liam Shaw in the second half. With no first team action this weekend, the Under-23s took centre stage at Hillsborough for their PDL2 clash with Wigan. The contest gave several

PROACT SHIFT FOR UNITED SHEFFIELD UNITED WOMEN ANNOUNCE Sheffield United Women have a new home - Chesterfield Football Club’s Proact Stadium. Carla Ward’s women’s team, who play in the FA Women’s Championship, will join United’s U23s in playing at the home of the Spireites, initially, until the end of the 2019/20 season. Blades chairman, Prince Musa’ad commented: “Earlier in the season Prince Abdullah highlighted his commitment to the Women’s team and
U23s SHARE THE SPOILS IN SIX GOAL THRILLER Sheffield United’s Under 23s were denied a second 3-2 win on the bounce with the last kick of the game as Bolton Wanderers came from behind at the death to snatch a point. It was a game the Blades should have been out of sight in despite falling behind early on. A combination of slick passing football and plenty of chances created ensured a ‘what if’ night for United who conceded after going down to 10 men in the final minutes after Harry Sheppeard had to go off injured. It took United 15
this one of the plans to give Carla Ward and her team the best possible opportunity to succeed. “The Proact is a fantastic venue and the facilities that are available to us are magnificent, we are indebted to Chesterfield Football Club for their assistance.” United Women’s manager, Carla Ward, added: “The Proact Stadium has hosted international football, as well as matches at EFL and
minutes to get going and when they did they were already 1-0 down after a neat passing move from the hosts ended in Ronan Darcy volleying home from just inside the box. But once they settled the Blades dominated the rest of the half and equalised after a nice move of their own which ended in captain Reece York cutting in from the left and firing home into the far corner. The momentum firmly swung United’s way and it was Jake Young who went close on two occasions in a matter of minutes, first forcing a save at the near post before curling an effort just wide as the visitors looked to turn the game around. Young did finally find the net soon after when
National League level, so the facilities will be perfect for us and hopefully we can continue our impressive form in the FA Women’s Championship.” Ashley Carson, on behalf of Chesterfield FC, commented: “I am delighted that we have been able to accommodate Sheffield United Women for the remainder of this season. Chesterfield has a great reputation for a quality stadium and an amazing
he went on a mazy solo run through the middle and found the near post corner of the net with a low effort to make it 2-1. George Broadbent was denied by a great block and a save in a matter of seconds but United didn’t manage to build on their dominance and Bolton punished them just before the break when Eddie Brown headed home after a shot had come back off the post. 10 minutes after the break the Blades were back in front. The trialist up front showed persistence to harry a defender after a poor kick out from the goalkeeper, nicking the ball off the centre-back and slotting home into the corner. Bolton though came on
pitch. This is also a well needed financial injection to the football club.” As a result of the agreement, a Sheffield United Women’s team will face a Chesterfield FC Women team in a preseason friendly. United’s first FA Women’s Championship fixture at the Proact Stadium will be on Sunday 24th November when Durham are the visitors. The kick-off time is 12noon.
strong as the game wore on. Jordan Amissah had to be alert to push away a powerful effort before the hosts missed a huge chance with two minutes to go with Senior sliding the ball just wide at the back post. Substitute Sheppeard then had to go off well into stoppage time after a nasty tackle from behind stopped a United counter, and with United having used all three substitutes they had to play the remaining added time with 10 men. It cost them dearly when the last kick of the game was converted by Callum King-Harnes who fired home after running onto a cross from the left to deny the Blades victory at the death.
VICEPRESIDENTS Sheffield United have bolstered the off-thefield team with four individuals who are well-known and respected within the South Yorkshire business community. Graham Moore, Martin Green, Darren Baker and Mark Ross have happily accepted positions of vice-presidents and will support the owner, board of directors and senior management team in raising the club’s profile locally, nationally and internationally in line with the great work achieved on the pitch. Chief executive, Stephen Bettis, commented: “Engaging vice-presidents to promote all areas of the club is a model we have used successfully, previously, and we are confident that Graham, Martin, Darren and Mark will do so again. All four are Blades fans, are respected within their specialist fields locally and will offer invaluable support and advice with regards to sponsorship and off-the-field events. “The success of Sheffield United is a result of contributions from many, many people within the club. The contributions of the vice presidents have undoubtedly been a key factor and hopefully they can assist once again in propelling the club to even greater heights.” Graham is best known for his role as chairman of Westfield Health in Sheffield, whilst Martin heads up entertainments company, Redtooth. Darren is a managing director of JB Doors and chairman of the Sheffield United Community Foundation and Mark is Managing Director of the local property business, Redbrik and the PR and marketing firm, hrm.
