COUNCIL SUPPORTS COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY WET WEATHER Following substantial rainfall over recent weeks, Sheffield Council is continuing to work closely with those in the worst affected areas. As well as offering financial support to affected residents and businesses, clean-up efforts in the rivers and brooks have been ongoing, with the council working alongside the Environment Agency and other key partners. Divers have also been busy clearing debris

that has collected around bridges and culverts, ensuring that rivers continue to flow and cranes have been brought in to remove large trees that have been washed into waterways. Whilst the 64mm of heavy rain brought travel disruption to many areas of the city, it was thanks to the council’s hard-working contractors, partners, community volunteers and investment in new flood defences that very few properties

were flooded during this spate of bad weather. The significant investment in flood defences by the council protected the city and its residents and although the amount of rainfall was substantial, the defences coped well, over-topping only slightly. The council will suspend council tax for the affected properties for a period of three months to allow residents to get back on their

feet. In addition the council will provide £500 to those whose houses have been affected by flooding and the charity organisation, South Yorkshire Community Fund (SYCF) will be providing £100 compensation to affected residents. Sheffield City Council has made a donation to SYCF and if people would like to support affected residents, all further donations should be sent to them. They will ensured that

• LEATHER CHESTERFIELDS • ANTIQUE FURNITURE • LEATHER/FABRIC • MODERN & OLD • DINING SETS • BEDROOM FURNITURE • KITCHEN & ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

these much needed funds are passed on to those who have been affected by severe flooding in Doncaster and Rotherham. For local small and medium sized businesses affected, the council will be adopting a Government scheme which will include financial support and business rates relief for affected properties. For more information on the South Yorkshire Community Fund (SYCF) and for details on how to donate, visit: www.sycf.org.uk/

COUNCIL TAX AND BUSINESS RATES RELIEF FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY THE FLOODS Residents and businesses who have been badly affected by the recent flooding are eligible for 100% discount on their council tax and business rate for a minimum of three months, and longer, if people are unable

to return to their homes or trade from their business. In a report signed off by Doncaster Council today, which follows government guidance, this relief helps those who have been most badly hit by

the floods. Damian Allen, Chief Executive at Doncaster Council, said: “Some of our residents and businesses have really felt the impact of the recent flooding we have seen in Doncaster.

“It is vital that the council supports these people and businesses in their time of need. We have set up eight dedicated community hubs around Doncaster where our staff are on hand to help residents with immediate

support both now and in the longer term. As well as providing this, we also recognise the financial impact so we have responded rapidly to the government criteria to offer these discounts.” Discounts will be awarded

Weekly Wit With...

ALBERT SNODGRASS

I want to tell you about a girl who only eats plants. You’ve probably never heard of herbivore. Three conspiracy theorists walk in to a bar... You can’t tell me that’s just a coincidence. What do you call a musician with no girlfriend? Homeless. What do you call a fear of giants? Fee-Fi-Phobia. Me: I think I have a crush on Beyoncé. Her: Whatever floats your boat. Me: No, that’s buoyancy. Yesterday one of my good friends told me I often make people uncomfortable by violating their personal space. It was a really hurtful thing to say and completely ruined our bath. I boiled a funny bone once. It turned into a laughing stock. A girl I’m dating owns a bakery and works long hours. I don’t think it’s going to work out. She’s too kneady. My grandpa’s last words before he died was “Pints! Gallons! Litres!” That speaks volumes. So many people these days are too judgemental. I can tell just by looking at them. I arrived early at the restaurant last night. “Do you mind waiting for a bit?” The manager asked. “Not at all” I replied. “Good, take these pizzas to table 6,” he said.

ISSUE 1346 27/11/2019

CAMPAIGN TO STOP DOMESTIC ABUSE LAUNCHES There’s no place for domestic abuse. Full stop. Preventing violence, abuse and harassment is everyone’s business. That’s the message in the Sheffield Domestic and Sexual Abuse strategy, which highlights that domestic abuse is a widespread public health issue that needs a long-term plan to reduce how often it happens in the city. People may be surprised to hear that over 18,000 people aged 16 – 59 are estimated to have been a victim of domestic abuse in the last 12 months. Some incidents are reported, some are not, and there is an urgent need to be clear about what domestic abuse is because it comes in a number of forms. Alison Higgins, Strategic Commissioning Manager for Domestic and Sexual Abuse said: “Domestic abuse is often recognised as physical, violent abuse but that sort of abuse is often the tip of the iceberg. Most abuse starts with emotional abuse of some kind and the warning signs are usually to do with jealous and controlling behaviour. People who have experienced domestic abuse will testify that the impact of emotional abuse can be harder to recover from than physical injuries. We are committed to helping and advising anyone who is either being abusive or being abused in any way and we encourage people to come forward to get support to prevent any further harm. Remember that there is always someone to talk to so please come forward and ask for help. That’s what our services are here for.” The term ‘What’s the harm’ is being

used in this domestic abuse campaign to highlight unacceptable behaviours: ‘If you use threatening behaviour, lose your temper, throw objects, humiliate or dominate your partner, this can be a SIGN OF DOMESTIC ABUSE’. This is a sign of intimidation. ‘If you control where your partner can go, who they can see, what they can buy or wear, this can be a SIGN OF DOMESTIC ABUSE’. This is a sign of control. ‘If you obsess over what your partner is doing, where they are and who they are with, this can be a SIGN OF DOMESTIC ABUSE’. This is a sign of obsession. ‘Inspire to Change’ educates people who are being abusive to change their behaviour and those who know that their behaviour is not acceptable are being offered free sessions that help them to understand why they behave the way they do and how to change it. This helps to improve their own lives and the lives of those close to them. The sessions are run by South Yorkshire Rehabilitation Company and so far the second highest kind of referrals to this service are people who have recognised they need help and have come forward themselves. Luke Hart, who witnessed controlling, obsessive and intimidating behaviour against his mother campaigns to raise awareness of abusive behaviour. He says: “Coercive and controlling behaviours are at the root of domestic abuse. In 2016, only days after my brother Ryan and I had finally raised enough money for our family to escape from our father,

WALLED GARDEN GETS GRANT BOOST Friends of Hillsborough Park, a volunteer group dedicated to maintaining and improving the parkland area in north Sheffield, has received funding to repair the raised beds of the Hillsborough Park Walled Garden as part of the Sizzling and Carling Community Action campaign, a Carling Made Local initiative that sees Great Britain’s number one lager brand support a range of local community projects across the UK. Nominated for support by the local Sizzling pub, The Park in Wadsley Bridge, Friends of Hillsborough Park have been able to replace the dilapidated brickwork of 5 raised growing beds in the Walled Garden. The Garden is a much-cherished part of the Park, providing a peaceful haven for the local community in what is a busy and densely populated area. The raised beds are a key element of the Garden, adopted by a variety of volunteer groups for growing

flowers and plants, and inclusive to those with disabilities or limited mobility. In late September, staff and customers from The Park in Wadsley Bridge joined Friends of Hillsborough Park volunteers to carry out essential maintenance on the garden and finish off the remaining brickwork. The funding will have a lasting impact on the Walled Garden, with Friends of Hillsborough Park Treasurer Andy Chaplin saying, “Restoring the raised beds to their prime condition will ensure they can be used and enjoyed by locals for many years to come. We are hugely grateful to the Sizzling and Carling Community Action campaign for helping us maintain this treasured community garden at a time when council budgets are being cut”. he shot and killed our Mum, Claire, and 19-year-old sister, Charlotte in public before killing himself. Our father hadn’t been violent towards us before but throughout our lives he had been incredibly dominating and controlling. Only after the murders did we learn that what happened to our family happens regularly in this country – two women are killed every week by a partner/ex-partner and the one thing all domestic homicides have in common is an extensive history of coercive control by the perpetrator. We’d been looking for violence to determine whether we were in danger when we should have been looking for coercive and controlling behaviours. It’s crucial that men understand it’s not OK to control, isolate, intimidate, undermine or financially restrict their partners or children. That’s why Inspire To Change by Sheffield City Council is so important because it goes to the root of the domestic abuse and challenges not just behaviours but attitudes.” David who attended Inspire to Change speaks here about how the sessions helped him and his relationship which is now so much better https://youtu.be/5jH3bTfWZsc People can find out more about the programme including how to refer at www.inspiretochange.co.uk or call 01142 567 270. Anyone affected by domestic abuse who needs support can visit www.idas.org.uk or call the Sheffield Helpline 0808 8082241.

what'smywine? is a game for 4-24 players, or even more, and a fun way to spend time with friends and family… tasting, talking and learning about wine. The aim is to guess the facts about the mystery wine, but also to let your taste buds and your imagination connect. One person can host the party and provide all the wines, or each person/ couple can bring their own mystery bottle to the party. Either way all you need is a few bottles of wine, some socks (yes really, some socks) and to want to spend some quality time with friends. This is a game where everyone’s taste buds and everyone’s views, expert or not, really do count.

BBC Radio Sheffield proudly presents a star-studded night of music and laughter in aid of South Yorkshire Community Foundation’s Flood Relief Appeal on Tuesday 10 December, at Doncaster Dome.. “This concert is a great way to give something back”. Toby Foster, BBC Radio Sheffield Local superstars Bang Bang Romeo headline an exciting evening of feel good music and comedy.

Stand up comedians Justin Moorhouse (Phoenix Nights, Looking for Eric) and Tom Wrigglesworth (BBC Radio 4) are joined on the bill by comedian and writer Nina Gilligan & Paul Sinha – also known as The Sinnerman on ITV’s The Chase. South Yorkshire’s brilliant ukulele band The Everly Pregnant Brothers will play out the first half in style, and music will also come from South Yorkshire singer and Britain’s Got Talent finalist, Kyle Tomlinson. The evening’s host

and compere is BBC Radio Sheffield’s breakfast show host and funny man Toby Foster. He says: “I’ve been out in the region’s flood hit communities with my radio show and seen first hand how devastating it has been. Some of the stories are heart breaking - people have lost their homes, belongings and in some cases their livelihoods too. “We’ve been proud to support the charity appeal and I’m

grateful to all the acts that have got on board so quickly to help us put on this fantastic evening at The Dome. “This concert is a great way to give something back and

hopefully bring a smile to people’s faces after a really tough time.” Tickets cost £15 each and all proceeds go to the flood appeal supporting victims of

the recent devastating floods. To book your tickets visit www.bbc.co.uk/ radiosheffield or phone 01302 370777.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

It’s just not ‘carpy’ to go carp fishing without boilies is it? The angling media circus over the last twenty years has confirmed to every carp angler that if he or she goes without boilies, they are only fishing, (camping), and not carp fishing…correct? I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched anglers persist with boilies, when others around them are catching carp on something else, yet still they stick at it; why? I ask only because this week I went perch fishing and caught nothing but carp. If I’m honest, I was trying to emulate the successful captures of decent perch by a chum from a water we are both club members on, but failed miserably; I’m sure he’ll remind me… I’d even seen his tactics after he posted me a picture of the rig which seemed irresistible to passing stripeys, so made a point of visiting the local tackle shop to pick up exactly the same feeders, adding similar hook lengths and purchased two pints of red wrigglers and a pot of lobworms. Success was nailed on surely? On arrival at the water, I chose a peg only two away from where my compatriot had scored and quickly slipped on the feeder, added a swivel, trimmed a tail rubber to keep the link away from the feeder during the cast, and pulled my short hook link through it before fitting it all together snugly. On the hair, a broken section of lobworm, the feeder was filled with grubs and it was flicked out to the edge of catapult range. Once settled, a pouch of maggots over the top and as usual, the first brew of the day was poured. This particular venue usually fishes very poorly after a frost, so I wasn’t expecting to see any carp at all after the preceding freezing night and as I watched the sun rise through the steam of my tea, the water was absolutely still with not a ripple to be seen anywhere. I fired out more maggots over the feeder and cast regularly every ten minutes or so to try and get some bait in before the resident waterfowl found my spot. The lake holds a pair of Smew and if you have never encountered these admittedly pretty birds, they put the efforts of the humble bait robbing Coot to shame. I have never known a water bird which is so effective at diving and clearing spots as these things! Obviously, one of them floated into view and promptly ate everything I’d put in during the previous hour, including my worm section and I watched disappointedly as the quivertip pulled around smoothly.

As always, the Smew dropped the hook bait at the merest hint of resistance, but the damage was done, and I had to reposition it. Eventually the pesky thief moved away, and I could safely resume my attack. The next cast resulted in the ‘tip yanking around as a carp picked off the worm. It wasn’t what I expected, but after a hard fought five minute scrap, my 8lb line held and a double figure mirror carp lay glistening on the mat. The battle had been watched by a fellow angler who had just arrived, and he informed that he was to set up nearby and fish mini-boilies in pursuit of carp as his tactics had been working well during warmer weather. We wished each other well, and I returned my fish to swim away back into the depths. Thirty minutes later, a second double figure carp, this time weighed at exactly 15lb, also saw fit to disturb my perching. In between, not a flicker from the tip, just two huge bites from each carp as the worm proved too tempting. Again, I had to wait thirty odd minutes for a bite, despite casting every ten, but once more, a third decent carp hit the net; a trio of chunky carp in the first ninety minutes… the other angler looked on forlornly; he mentioned the fact that his indicators had remained motionless but stuck to doggedly his boilie approach… I lost the next fish, it steamed off quickly and I’d mistakenly left my reel on backwind so when I struck, I split the nail on my finger, severely bruised two more as the reel handle smacked across my hand and lost the carp. On cold fingers, it certainly came keen! Once I’d collected my thoughts (and stopped the bleeding) I returned to the task of trying to catch a perch, lobbing the feeder back out and catapulting a few red maggots every couple of minutes. The carp continued to frustrate me though, with a fish roughly every half hour throughout the session. I lost another, but by the end of the visit, I’d landed eleven carp, the best at 16lb, the smallest perhaps 11lb and still hadn’t had a single perch! A rattling bite as I reached forward to begin packing up had me back on the rod and as I struck, I felt the familiar kick of a decent perch; at last! After only a minute, the perch surfaced, and I spied a decent fish of perhaps a pound. It wasn’t a monster but it was what I came for, so you can imagine my dismay as I extended the net towards it and promptly knocked it off! Unbelievable… That was enough for me, the final sign that I wasn’t going to get a target fish, so I packed up, put the barrow in the van and wandered over to the other chap who was still fishing. He had caught only a solitary carp on his boilies and asked what I’d done differently as he’d seen my rod bending regularly through the day. I showed him my rig and gave him the remaining lobworms to replace his boilie so I’m hopeful he may have added another to his tally, but it did make me think that maybe some carp anglers are missing fish that they may otherwise catch purely because it isn’t carpy to fish with anything other than boilies! Sometimes it pays to do something a little differently, but how many of us are guilty of sticking with something because it worked last time? I know a few…

WARNE ON COMEBACK WIN AT MK DONS MILLERS boss Paul Warne admitted that the secondhalf substitutions of Freddie Ladapo and Kyle Vassell were the key to his side’s second-half comeback victory over Milton Keynes Dons. The Millers looked set to be staring down the barrel of a rare away defeat at Stadium:MK after first-half strikes from Alex Gilbey and Joe Mason put the hosts in charge following a slow start from Warne’s side in the opening 45 minutes. However, the South Yorkshiremen were a transformed side after the break and after Dan Barlaser pulled one back, Ladapo, despite missing a second-half penalty, notched a brace to turn the tide of an enthralling encounter in the Millers’ favour.

Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne was quick to hail the character of his side, who put in a Jekyll and Hyde display – but one in which Vassell – with his contribution and Ladapo – with his goals, helped his inform side notch their fourth successive away league victory, against all the odds. “Vass and Freddie were a constant thorn when they came on.” Warne said. “Vass was unbelievable. The lads trust him. He demands a lot from people on the pitch. Everything that was good about us in the second half came through him and he will be really pleased. I’ve been singing his praises for weeks and it was nice to put him on. “Vass’ delivery was excellent. You have to put the ball in areas

to attack and he did that. I’m exhausted but really pleased.” Following the victory, Warne’s side moved up to fourth in the Sky Bet League One standings but despite the Millers faithful making the long trek up the M1 in jubilant mood, Warne admitted that his side were far from their best, in the opening period. “We started the game really poor, which was frustrating. I did not recognise my players in the first 20 minutes. We showed them a little bit too much

MOORE TAKES POSITIVES FROM WYCOMBE DEFEAT Darren Moore says his side showed their character in the 1-0 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in Sky Bet League One. Joe Jacobson’s injurytime penalty denied Rovers a point after playing the majority of the second-half with 10 men after Tom Anderson’s red card.

He said: “To lose the game in those circumstances is always disappointing, the referee made his decision and we have to move on from that. “The main thing I will look at from the game is our energy and commitment shown with 10 men for more than 40 minutes. “The players put so

much into the game and we feel hard done to not to come away with something but that’s football.” Having remained solid for the most-part of the 90 minutes, Moore believes there were positives to be taken. He added: “Our concentration levels slipped for a split

WRIGHT: DEFEAT TOUGH TO TAKE Joe Wright said that the manner of the defeat at league leaders Wycombe Wanderers was tough to take. Rovers had looked set to grind out a goalless draw despite playing almost all of the second half with ten men, but Rovers conceded a late penalty and Joe Jacobsen converted to snatch the points away at the death. “It was tough to take,

especially to lose in the manner that we did,” said Wright. “The lads put a great shift in. Even when we went down to ten men, I still felt comfortable in the game, and felt we had a chance of winning never mind drawing so to end up coming away with nothing was tough, but we’ll dust ourselves down and we’ll go again. “Games like that happen sometimes.

If we lose football games, I can accept it if we play the way we like to play but the first half was not like us. We made changes and the subs came on and had a real positive effect. “Our second half performance was excellent. We did say to the lads to move the ball out wide quickly and switch play to get crosses in and we did not do that in the

second and that has cost us, they are top of the table for a reason and they are relentless with what they do. “We will look at the situation we found ourselves in and use that to make sure we’re better when we face a similar game in the future. “They picked a team to nullify and stop us from doing our thing and we have to take that as a compliment in terms of our ability.”

If you were a Rotherham fan, you’d have loved it. The fans were unbelievable in the second-half and it really does help the lads.”

I FEEL FOR THE PLAYERS Garry Monk said he felt for his players after Wednesday’s late 2-1 defeat to Championship leaders West Brom at The Hawthorns. The Baggies took a first half lead through Hal Robson-Kanu but Wednesday rallied in the second half, creating several chances and equalising from Steven Fletcher’s penalty.

However, the home side were awarded a penalty of their own late in the game and Charlie Austin converted to seal the points before Liam Palmer received a straight red card. Monk said: “I feel for my players to have not come away with something from that game. “We’re playing the team who are top of the league, away from

SIX UNBEATEN FOR BLADES United’s unbeaten run in the Premier League was extended to six games, following a fascinating sixgoal encounter at Bramall Lane in front of the Sky Sports cameras. The Blades looked set to claim all three points against Manchester United, before a devastating spell of three-goals in seven minutes put the visitors in front, only for substitute Oli McBurnie to rescue a deserved draw for United at the death. For the clash against the Red Devils, boss Wilder made two enforced changes, with Moore and Jagielka replacing the ineligible Henderson and injured Egan. After a quiet opening ten minutes, the Blades had two chances within a matter of seconds. Firstly, De Gea saved from Lundstram’s left-footed volley from Norwood’s centre, before the Spanish stopper produced an even better save to deny McGoldrick with a header from pointblank range from Stevens inch perfect cross from the left. It was becoming a feisty affair, with tackles flying in from all angles, with Jones and

Norwood competing for a loose ball, before Lundstram was harshly adjudged to have committed a foul. But the sound level inside S2 literally hit the roof in the 19th minute as the Blades deservedly went in front. Mousset chased hard and forced Jones into a mistake, De Gea was equal to Lundstram’s initial effort, saving with his legs, but was powerless to deny FLECK on the rebound. On 29 minutes, Moore was called into action for the first time, saving comfortably from Martial. But it was the home side, continuing to force the issue and after a prolonged spell of position, Fred was forced to concede a corner to prevent Baldock’s low cross picking out a runner. The visitors looked a threat on the break, with O’Connell twice called into action to halt the danger, firstly at the expense of a corner, before acrobatically clearing to stop the ball reaching the onrushing Fred and that was the last action of note in the first-half. The opening action of the second period saw Rashford fashion an opportunity out of nothing, but his shot

sailed harmlessly into the Kop. At the other end, Lundstram freed Baldock down the right and Williams was carded by referee Marriner following a reckless lunge that gave the Blades a free kick in a promising position, but unfortunately it came to nothing and Lundstram was then booked for halting a potential counter attack. United took a firmer grip of the game in the 52nd minute and it was that man MOUSSET who delightfully slotted an effort past De Gea from outside the area, having been freed by a clever ball by Fleck, as the Blades won the ball high and broke quickly. In response, the visitors enjoyed a prolonged spell which ended with Maguire firing just wide, when trying to pick out the run of Martial. Wan-Bissaka saw yellow for a mistimed challenge on McGoldrick, before Moore showed assured handling to collect a dangerous low cross from James, the United stopper then got his angles inch perfect as he let Rashford’s shot go wide of his near post. Mousset pulled up when chasing down Lindelof and was subsequently replaced

by McBurnie. With 18 minutes, the visitors gave themselves hope as James got the better of Stevens and despite clearing the initial cross, the ball fell kindly for WILLIAMS who fired home a right-footed half-volley that gave Moore no chance and five minutes later they restored parity, as GREENWOOD applied the finishing touch from the middle of the six-yard from Rashford’s centre. The visitors had clearly been buoyed by the two quick goals and lightening quick pace helped them take an undeserved lead. James combined with Martial down the left and his cut back found RASHFORD who calmly sidefooted into an empty net with Moore already committed. Sharp and Robinson were introduced as the Blades looked to mount a comeback and as four minutes of added time were signalled, MCBURNIE volleyed home the equaliser from Robinson’s chip across the box, despite a very, very anxious wait while VAR checked a possible handball and to the delight of the majority inside the Lane, that was the final action of a thrilling contest.

MIXED FEELINGS AS BLADES RESCUE POINT

31

2019/20 AUGUST

Chris Wilder felt the Blades ‘dominated an iconic football club’ for the majority of Sunday’s thrilling draw against Manchester United. The Blades bossed the first 70 minutes of the contest and were deservedly in front courtesy of goals from John Fleck and Lys Mousset. But it took a last-gasp Oli McBurnie effort, one which survived a lengthy VAR check, to rescue a point after three goals in seven second-half minutes from the Red Devils looked like cruelly condemning the Blades too defeat. Wilder acknowledged his side dropped off the pace for ten minutes and were punished, but praised the way his side ‘came roaring back’ to grab a share of the spoils. Oli McBurnie says it would have cruel had the Blades not got a least a point from Sunday’s clash against Manchester United. United’s record signing who had come off the bench, netted at the death, after a threegoal blitz in seven second-half minutes from the Red Devils looked to have swung the game in their favour, despite goals from John Fleck and Lys Mousset having previously had the Blades in the ascendency. The Scottish international was adamant the hosts were the better team for much of the contest and admitted the dressing room were ‘a bit gutted’ not to have beaten Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side. Phil Jagielka thought the Blades were ‘fantastic for 60 minutes’ in Sunday’s memorable six-goal stalemate against Manchester United. But the experienced defender, making his first start since returning to the Lane in the summer, admitted the home side paid the price for ‘losing a bit of composure and getting edgy’, only to rally at the death and earn a deserved point through Oli McBurnie’s volley. The 37-year-old says he feared the worst when McBurnie’s late effort went to a VAR check and conceded he would have been ‘devastated’ if it had been ruled out.
