FREEDOM OF THE CITY FOR MAN WITH THE PRAM Sheffield’s most famous fundraiser, John Burkhill was granted Freedom of the City yesterday for his tireless commitment to raising money for cancer charity Macmillan. He’s known across the city as the ‘Man with the Pram’ and now John Burkhill is the ‘freeman with the pram’. Last week Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Tony Downing awarded Sheffield’s famous wig wearing fundraiser, John, with the city’s highest honour, the Freedom of the City. The ceremony took place in the Sheffield Town Hall where John was greeted by the Lord Mayor and other city officials, plus
his family and friends. John, 80, has raised £750,000 for Macmillan over the past 30 years and has vowed to raise more than a million. He joins only a handful of people to have been given the honour, including Nelson Mandela, Harry Brearley, Sir Winston Churchill; and athletes such as Lord Coe, Michael Vaughan, and most recently Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. John is famous for tirelessly walking the streets of Sheffield for a great cause, and is a regular feature at the city’s half marathons, 10ks and other events. This Sunday he will take part in one of Sheffield’s most popular organised races, The Percy
Pud, where he’ll get 10km closer to his £1million target. For more than 30 years he has put his heart and soul into raising money for Macmillan. He has taken part in more than 1,000 organised races with his distinctive green wig and pram, braving the hills of Sheffield and beyond in all kinds of weather. This has not gone unnoticed, John has received many accolades over the years. He was an Olympic Torch Bearer in 2012 and won the Pride of Yorkshire Award in 2012, and also again this year. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2013 for his services to charity, and the Douglas Macmillan Award for his
services to Macmillan Cancer Support. He started the 1st Yorkshire Half Marathon in 2015, was the Contribution to Charity winner in The Churchill Awards in 2017 – and if that’s not enough he’s even had lunch with the Queen. The Freedom of the City is an honour bestowed by the council upon a valued member of the community,
or upon a visiting celebrity or dignitary. Although the title of “freeman” confers no special privileges, those names included on the Freeman’s Roll have a permanent and well-deserved place in the history of the city. It will allow John the freedom to roam through the city and is a very public recognition of John’s years of charity fundraising.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION TO MARK DONCASTER MUSEUM CLOSING AND MOVING HOME A special ‘All Change’ exhibition which showcases the history of Doncaster museum past and present will give residents a last chance to experience the museum in its current home. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery on Chequer Road will close its doors on Friday, 17 January 2020 before reopening in its new home just up the road on Waterdale in summer 2020. The exhibition will take
a fond look back to when the museum used to be at Beechfield House before it moved to its current location in 1964 when it was officially opened by Princess Margaret. This will give residents the opportunity to reminisce about the museum, relive happy memories and see a number of the exhibits which will not be moving to the new Central Library and Museum on the former girl’s school site. The new building
will showcase many exhibits that have not been seen before and allow for more rotation of exhibits and displays. The temporary closure allows the conservationist to carefully go through all the exhibits, recording them and checking whether the ones scheduled to move are in a suitable condition to make the short journey. This conservation process and the preparing of exhibits for the new museum is a delicate
specialised process and does take considerable time. The social history museum at Cusworth Hall will be available while Doncaster Museum is temporarily closed. There are also plans to launch a dedicated travelling museum in spring 2020 funded by Arts Council England. This mobile museum will travel right across the borough and have a ‘Best of Doncaster’ theme. It will showcase
some of the fascinating artefacts which will go into the new museum and give people a taste of what they can expect to see and enjoy. It will also display objects and stories loaned from community groups and individuals, celebrating the Borough’s rich and varied history. The 1960s building will continue to be used for complementary cultural and learning activities with future uses that benefit the community

currently being explored. Debbie John-Lewis, Assistant Director Communities, said: “We are embarking on an exciting journey for Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery with a new, ultra-modern facility going up on the former girls’ school site on Waterdale. “To get everything ready for its opening in summer 2020 we need to close the current museum and have put on a special ‘All Change’ exhibition to look at Doncaster Museum. I would urge people to go along to
Doncaster Museum in its final weeks at its current home to get a final glimpse of some of the exhibits which may hold fond memories. This is the start of a whole new chapter for the current museum building and Doncaster Museum in the future.” People can see the exhibition in the museum foyer and look round the exhibits on Thursdays and Fridays (10am to 4.30pm) and on Saturdays (10.30am to 4pm) from now until Friday, 17 January 2020. The museum will be
closed during Christmas from 23 December 2019 to 2 January 2020. More information about the museum and the ‘All Change’ exhibition can be found at: www. doncaster.gov.uk/museum Further information on the new Central Library and Museum, which celebrates the former girls’ school by restoring the central frontage and encasing it in glass, is available at: www.doncaster.gov.uk/ newlibraryandmuseum

Can you give someone a skin graft from your butt? Ass skin for a friend. What do you call a row of men waiting for a hair cut? A Barbercue. Cop pulled me over and said: “PAPERS.” I yelled “scissors” and drove off. What’s big and grey and doesn’t matter? It’s irrelephant. What do you call a kid who doesn’t believe in Santa? A rebel without a Claus. How do you make a waterbed more bouncy? Add spring water. I can’t believe I was arrested for impersonating a politician! I was just sitting there doing nothing.

Gerry Cinnamon’s music crosses generations in a way that only a handful of wordsmiths can - relatable, relevant and a true story teller. Unsigned and unmatched in his ability to operate outside of the mainstream Gerry has become a cult hero and force to be reckoned with. His upcoming UK and Ireland headline tour, which will see the singer songwriter perform his first ever show at Sheffield’s Fly DSA Arena on Tuesday 2nd June 2020, is set to continue his legacy of selling out shows in minutes. Tickets, priced £40.40 & £26.35 including fees, go on general sale at 9am on Friday 6th December and are available online at www. flydsaarena.co.uk or 0114 256 56 56. The inimitable live shows are infamous for their wild atmosphere and special sing along moments; with his crowd singing every word - to every song – many before they are even released. Gerry Cinnamon’s hugely anticipated self-produced, self-released debut album Erratic Cinematic rocketed to the top of the iTunes album charts on release with little more than a social media post; holding off some of the biggest names the industry has to offer. His anthemic tracks, laced with social commentary have captured the imagination of audiences up and down the country. With every track being different, it keeps the listener on their toes. Using loop pedal harmonies and pounding kick drums, Gerry makes a habit of whipping the audience into a frenzy which sees them leaving on a high and wanting more. In an age of information overload, it’s clear Gerry Cinnamon cuts through the noise. No longer is the intermediary power with the label or the media. It is between the artist and the people. Gerry is perhaps the UK’s or the World’s best example of that. He is more than an artist but a phenomenon, paving the way for the next generation of DIY pioneers.
The awards, the sold out shows and the reaction to his critically acclaimed debut album has not only propelled him to the next level but has affirmed his place as a writer as well as a live act. Cinnamon says: On his sell-out shows: “It’s been beyond wild. Scottish tour sold out in minutes. England and Ireland dates done the same. We’ve got no marketing machine behind us. It’s all just from word of mouth. That means it’s real though. That means the folk who come to the gigs are there ‘cause they love their tunes. And it shows. From the minute the doors open the building starts shaking. See when the crowd is with you singing every word it’s a mad feeling. Beautiful mayhem doesn’t even get anywhere near it.” On his debut album: “It’s been a long time coming! But every time I sat down to record, I ended up writing new stuff. Pretty buzzing about how it’s been received. I’m a writer first and a musician second so it’s cool to be recognised for the writing and not just the live shows. It’s just the tunes, no record label, no promo, just the tunes. That means it’s real man.” “I think the new material is the best I’ve ever written and no-ones even heard it yet. Can’t wait to get the next one out sharpish.”

ISSUE 1347 04/12/2019
come & celebrate a better life in lowedges Greenhill and Bradway Tenants’ and Residents’ Association is excited to announce the ‘A Better Life in Lowedges’ project celebration which will take place in the Tenants’ Hall in Lowedges on the 7th December. The Greenhill and Bradway TARA was started in 1969, based at the Michael United Reform Church in Lowedges. It aimed to work with Sheffield City Council to give tenants a voice and a share in local decision making, and to organise events and activities for the benefit of residents. The Tenants’ Hall was built in 1973 to accommodate the growing TARA and its members. In recent years the TARA has expanded to incorporate other nearby areas such as Meadowhead and Chancet Wood, and today it is responsible for the annual Lowedges Festival - the biggest community festival in Sheffield - as well as numerous other events and regular community groups. Steven Rich, TARA secretary, stated, “The celebration on December 7th is going to be a great day, with music, free refreshments, and a chance to find out share memories and celebrate everything we have found out during research of our TARA”. The project and event have been funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, South Yorkshire Community Foundation, and SCC Community Fund. The project has been headed by the Community Heritage Manager at Heeley City Farm, Sally Rodgers, and has recorded memories of Lowedges estate to find out more about the history of the area from the estate’s beginning up to the present day. Sally said, “This is a fantastic project. Lowedges has changed such a lot in the last fifty years and the TARA has played an important role in those positive changes. We have collected photos, documents, and archive material, and recorded people’s memories. Did you know that when the estate was first built there were no shops? Vegetables were sold from a bus which came round every week.
Or that the estate is named after a farm that existed over 400 years ago?” The project will share an exhibition of its work so far at the event which will also be an opportunity to share your memories and photos, and finally deposit the project archive at the TARA hall where it will be freely available as a future community resource. Rebecca Hearne, the heritage project officer, said, “It has been a delight to talk to residents and collect their memories. It has been so interesting, at times emotional, and hugely inspiring to hear these personal histories. And we haven’t finished yet — please come on the 7th to give us any more information you have!” The celebration event will take place in the Tenants’ Hall on Gresley Road, Lowedges, S8 7HN, 10 am— 4 pm. There will be a free buffet lunch, musical entertainment from local South Yorkshire folk singer Ray Hearne, children’s activities, and opportunities to share memories, photos, documents, and anything else. The celebration is free to attend and everyone is welcome. The TARA hall is wheelchair accessible. About Greenhill and Bradway TARA “Greenhill and Bradway TARA represents the areas of Greenhill, Old Greenhill Village, Bradway, Meadowhead, Batemoor, Jordanthorpe and Lowedges, Chancet Wood, Painted Fabrics care home and Fraser Estate area of Sheffield. Our TARA represents and acts on behalf our residents and members. We organise and provide social gatherings, events, days out, bingo evenings, children’s activities and parties, Xmas markets, dances, football training, etc. We work on combatting anti-social behaviour, improving the environment and the wellbeing of our residents and members and creating social cohesion. In August we help the Friends of Greenhill Park organise the Lowedges Festival, attended by about 15,000 people. We are the centre point of information and support for both existing residents and new arrivals
moving to our estate.” About the ‘Better Life in Lowedges’ project Greenhill and Bradway TARA received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (£10k) and the South Yorkshire Community Foundation (£5k) in January 2019 and from the SCC Community Fund (£2.500) for the Better Life in Lowedges project. They commissioned Heeley City Farms Community Heritage team to help deliver this work. May 2019 marked the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of the Tenants Association. The project has been recording the history of the estate and the people who live or lived here, and contacting residents and ex-residents, seeking their memories and experiences on the estate. We have convened memory cafés and reminiscence groups which have provided an opportunity for gathering stories and oral histories, and have created a community archive. We have engaged local people in researching the heritage of the estate, including the pre-1950 rural landscape (shadows of which remain in the shape of the estate and in its name), the post-war context of the new estate, and the street names. We also organised groups to visit local archives including Sheffield City Archives and the Local Studies Library. About Heeley City Farm Heeley City Farm is a community charity based on a working farm and visitor centre one mile from Sheffield City Centre. Staff and volunteers from Heeley City Farm work with local communities around Sheffield to promote sustainability, regeneration, environmental education and health and well being. The farm was founded by local people in 1981 and has been growing organically ever since. The Community Heritage Team has been an important part of the farm since 2008, we love seeing people progress by helping them to have hands on opportunities to experience local heritage.
local teams offer their support to charities As Christmas approaches, both our Sheffield football teams are appealing to their supporters to help out the less fortunate in the city. Over the years both clubs have recognised the advantage their high profile gives them when reaching out ot he public, and United’s recent efforts on behalf of Cash for Kids saw over £4000 and 500 toys donated. This week both Wednesday and United unveiled new initatives aimed at helping everybody in the city enjoy Christmas a little bit more. HOMELESS charity Emmaus Sheffield has scored after striking up a new partnership with the Wise Old Owls! The Wise Old Owls is a supporters group for Sheffield Wednesday fans over the age of 50. It meets on the third Wednesday of every month in the 1867 Lounge at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground, and it was at one of those meetings that members invited representatives of charity Emmaus Sheffield to come along and talk about how the organisation works. The Wise Old Owls had also organised for all the attendees as well as fans of
Sheffield Wednesday to bring a bag of clothes each to donate to Emmaus Sheffield, the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for previously homeless people at its base down on Cadman Street. “This was a fantastic gesture by the Wise Old Owls and one that gave us a van full of items to take back for our shop,” said Emmaus Sheffield CEO Graham Bostock. “We are always very happy to come along and talk about our work to any businesses or groups in Sheffield. This can shed a little more light on homelessness and what we are doing at Emmaus to support the men and women who are trying to get their lives back on track again. The Wise Old Owls not only listened to us but then went the extra mile and made the sort of gesture that really does make a massive difference to the success of our retail operation, especially as we approach our busy Christmas season.” To find out more about Emmaus Sheffield and its work with the homeless and how to arrange a meeting or a visit www. emmaus-sheffield.org.uk Meanwhile across the city Sheffield
United announced a new campaign for 2019. Claire Bennett explained; “As ever at this time of the year, we try to support local charities as much as possible and as such we will once again be running a week of action for the S2 Foodbank to help feed struggling families this Christmas with the week of action until next Friday 6th December. All details of which can be found at the following link: www.sufc.co.uk/news/2019/november/ foodbank/ Supporters will either be able to drop off their food donations in the Blades Superstore, Copthorne Hotel, John Street Executive Entrance or in the Blades Family Hub (BFH & John Street Executive Entrance only available during the Newcastle game on Thursday 5th). It would be great if you could all share the above information with your staff teams again and friends and family, and even better if any of you would like to be involved and help donate any new and non-perishable food items to a very worthy cause this Christmas!”

This could be a spectacular week, if you can push against a desire to unwind. A Mars/Neptune tie can see you lacking drive. Yet with a positive tie between Jupiter and Uranus, promising opportunities might show up out of the blue, and you’ll need to be alert to grasp them. Call for more…
As Mercury moves into Sagittarius, it enlivens conversations and bucks up your ideas. And with a potent Moon influence across your communication axis, connecting with someone you haven’t heard from in a while could be moving and uplifting. On a domestic note, this can be a positive week. Call for more…
Whether you’re negotiating a deal or talking things over with your partner, this is not a time for frills, but for honesty. The Full Moon could bring on a temptation to splurge, but if you’re canny, you’ll hold back from needless spending to concentrate on a more lucrative opportunity. Call for more…
Seasonal activities can be a major draw and a lot of fun, but don’t let this detract you from an encounter that comes laden with opportunity. You may be taking one deal very seriously, only to find there is another available that could totally surpass the first. Call for more astral advice…
As Mercury moves into Sagittarius, it brings an opportunity to clear the air and find a compromise. Still, with a Full Moon in your sign, feelings can run high, so it pays to watch your words and avoid saying anything you might regret. A surprising offer could make a dream a reality. Call for more…
Mercury’s move into your sign can be a call to connect, even though a side of you may be quite happy to relax and read a book or watch a movie. Though you may be keen to invest wisely, there is one opportunity that is worth exploring, as it could enhance your financial situation. Call for more…
A dreamy Mars Neptune influence could see you reaching for experiences that have a spiritual quality or that could soothe and heal. With a Full Moon in a sheltered chart zone, a reduced schedule could be an opportunity to seek them out and see where they take you. Call for more astral advice…
As Venus in your sign links with Saturn and Pluto, you may be under no illusions about someone or something. And yet if you can step back from this, it may be easier to take advantage of an encounter that results in a refreshing friendship, romance or creative opportunity. Call for more advice…
The Full Moon can coincide with a festive event that gets the season underway, while enhancing romantic potential. Be ready though Leo, as an innovative Jupiter Uranus bond can bring a worthwhile offer your way that could catapult you into the spotlight. Call for more astral advice…
While your social life sparkles Aquarius, you may also be reflecting on an issue that needs closure and determined that you will draw a line under it. Plus, with a Full Moon boosting leisure options, you could find aspects of the week very exciting and some encounters riveting. Call for more…
St Agnes Fountain WEDNESDAY 18TH DECEMBER 2019 Show at 7:30pm December Tour St Agnes Fountain come together for one month a year; the Christmas Tour each December. Performing “rhythmed-up” carols and Christmas music, interspersed with laughter and spoken word. Founder member, David Hughes, and Chris Leslie originally released an EP of six tracks, “Acoustic Christmas” on guitar and mandolin in 1998. It sold out in three months and that was that but there was a clamour for more and, together with their friends, Chris While and Julie Matthews, they produced their first album, “St Agnes Fountain” in 2001. Not content with the album, the While & Matthews team organised a tour in December of that year and the response was overwhelming. The same reaction has greeted the band every year since with appearances on Radio 2 and other stations. Concert tickets are hot property. St Agnes Fountain will take their brand new studio album, their eighth, “Christmas Is Not Far Away” on the road in December. It is the season their legion of fans have been waiting for because, as they say, “Christmas doesn’t start till St Agnes Fountain”.

OLD SCHOOL OF ROCK LIVE REVIEW TYGERS OF PAN TANG The Old School House Barnsley Words & Pic by Roy Goodall HAVING not seen the Whitley Bay Rockers for a while, and that’s putting it mildly, I was keen to see how the once trail blazers for the NWOBHM movement would cut it live today. Opening with White Lines taken from their brand new album Ritual, it was quickly followed by Keeping Me Alive, a great song snatched from 2012’s Ambush. With
claws sharpened it was plain to see from the off Tygers Of Pan Tang still had bite and passion with longstanding front man Jacopo Meille spitting out songs from across the band’s lengthy career. This chap really can sing. Getting the balance is key to any live show and the band skilfully inserted the more recent with classic stuff like the brilliant up-tempo Raised On Rock, Slave To Freedom and the song that got them really noticed, Suzie Smiled. A great song taken off their 1980 debut album, Wild Cat. Main man from conception Robb Weir can still play his guitar with the best of them, swapping licks with Mickey Crystal as drummer Craig Ellis and bassist Gavin Gray provided a tight rhythm section. Only The Brave, lifted
from their 2016 selftitled release brought the night to a close, only for the lads to return with another new tune, Damn You. From the Wild Cat days we had another fan favourite Don’t Touch Me There, and cover classic ZZ Top’s Tush hitting the mark. Closing their sixteen song feast was their chart success classic Love Potion Number 9. It has to be said the Tygers Of Pan Tang did a fantastic job to an appreciative Barnsley crowd, with decent lighting, band members smiling and having fun and not once did we have any swearing. And it was also nice to see that throughout their career they’ve kept their band logo too. Overall, a delight and a pleasure.

WARNE’S PRAISE FOR MILLERS’ SPIRITED FIGHTBACK Rotherham United boss Paul Warne praised his side’s miraculous recovery as they produced some Emirates FA Cup magic of their own to come from 3-0 down to beat Solihull Moors 4-3 in the Second Round on Monday night. A pulsating seven-goal encounter in Solihull saw the tide turn entirely in the final 20 minutes of the game as the Millers mustered the most unbelievable of cup comebacks to earn their place in
the next round of this year’s competition. Warne reserved particular praise for his team’s final 25 minutes showing which he hinted was more like his side at their best, after a tough start to the game against a side he admires at the SportNation.bet Stadium. “I’m relieved is probably the best way to put it. We knew Solihull were going to be good and we prepared the team as well as we always do,” he explained. “We did everything we
possibly could to warn them of their threat and their physicality and in fairness I was always worried about conceding an early goal because it gives them a right boost.
“I thought they [Solihull] played really well, I’m not going to criticise my team. “They stopped us getting the ball out wide and creating crosses

and goalscoring opportunities and it wasn’t until we made the changes that we were able to create chances and take them. “To come back from 3-0 down to win 4-3 gives the lads great
pride. I just think we needed to improve in a few areas tonight, I didn’t think we were really at our best, but I did think the opposition were excellent. “They’re good
MOORE BACKS HIS TEAM TO RESPOND Darren Moore has backed his side to respond when they take on Leicester City’s U21 side on Wednesday. Moore was left frustrated as his side exited the Emirates FA Cup at Gillingham on Sunday, but is pleased to have a game so quickly. “I’m honest enough and
the players are honest enough to accept that we didn’t get it right on Sunday and now we look for a response,” he said. “We’ll go and analyse the game and we’ll look at ourselves - we’ve got a cup match on Wednesday so we don’t have long to dwell on this.”
Moore apologised to the 205 travelling supporters, but promised better from his side in upcoming games. “It’s not about throwing toys out of the pram because it was the first below par performance of the season, but what we’ve identified is that a performance like that
JOHN PLEASED TO BE BACK IN A ROVERS SHIRT Cameron John says he is back at 100% fitness after returning to action for Rovers at Gillingham on Sunday. The centre-back, on loan from Wolves, enjoyed pulling on a Rovers shirt for the first time since September. He said: “I feel back at 100% now and ready to kick on for the rest of the season, it was frustrating to get injured but that’s
part of football. “I tried not to rush it and make sure I did all I could during my recovery, and hopefully that will stand me in good stead in the future.” With a game coming up against Leicester City U21s in the Leasing.com Trophy on Wednesday, John says the focus is on a quick response from Sunday’s Emirates FA Cup loss at Priestfield. He added: “The
Gillingham defeat was a tough one to take, it was a good opportunity to get through but they were better than us on the day. “It wasn’t the comeback I hoped to have, but
it’s a learning curve for myself and the team as to how we respond to disappointment. We’ve got a game coming up quickly on Wednesday night and we’ll show a reaction there.”
complicated it. We went backwards and sideways too much which isn’t really us. I think if we play with our DNA we’re a really good side and the last 25 minutes was more ‘us’.”
LOCAL FOOTBALL County Senior Leagues with Michael Clarke
We swapped the rain for a heavy frost this weekend, as temperatures plummetted below zero on Saturday. This lead to a number of postponements, many pitches were still struggling from the previous rain. However, nine games did get the green light in the busiest weekend for a little while. Premier Division The top two were not in action in the Premier Division so third placed Wakefield AFC had the chance to close the gap. It was not to be though, as Wakefield lost 1-0 at home to High Green Villa. The loss is Wakefield’s third in four games in the league. Goals from Ricky Sidebottom, Jordan Good and Billy Smith (2) gave Houghton Main an impressive 4-1 win over Hepworth United at Far Lane. Burngreave FC made it back-to-back wins for the first time this season, with a 3-0 away win over Frecheville Davys. The three points take Burngreave out of the bottom two.
cannot happen again,” he added. “We didn’t really carry ourselves in the manner that we usually do. We pride ourselves on performance and, for the first time this season, we didn’t get that right. We’ll make no bones about it. We thank the travelling fans for making the journey down here, we send out apologies to them because that performance was below par.”

The Topham Cup Preliminary match between Fossils Vets and Hallam 1860 Old Boys “A” was finally played after a five week delay and a bit of a suprise result with Fossils winning 7-4 - Driver scoring a hat trick, Robinson 2 and one each for Stokes and Green so it’s Fossils who advance to the next round. PREMIER DIVISION Just one game played and it was the bottom two teams involved with Elsecar Dynamos hoping to open their account for the season, but their opponents Plough Rangers had other ideas and they were the winners 4-3, Cushworth 2, Morris and Chadburn scoring for the winners. Elsecar did score three times but to no avail, through Harling, Leach and Nicholson. DIVISION 1 Top two sides in this Dvision also played each other and it was the visitors Hemsworth Miners who were victorious with a 3-2 win, Lake and Staniforth for Thorncliffe. Denaby United and West End Terriers was a win for the home side by 4-3, Light 2, Jackson and Davy scoring the all important goals. Scawthorpe Club entertained Doncaster Over 35s which finished as a 2-2 draw, Stenton and Carter scoring for the visitors. Bullcroft S&P Vets and Swinton Athletic played each other and it was the away team that won 2-0. DIVISION 2 AFC Dronfield and East Herrngthorpe were the only teams to survive in this Division and it was AFC who took the points with a 1-0 win thanks to a Mason goal.
Division One League leaders Wombwell Town fell to their first league defeat of the season, as they fell to a 3-1 loss at home against Sheffield Medics. Handsworth FC Reserves made it 10 consecutive wins in all competitions, with another big win, 5-1 at home against New Bohemians. Handsworth remain in fourth, just a point further ahead in third are Kiveton Park, who beat Ardsley Athletico 10-4 at Wales High School. Goals from Christian Baxby (2), Reece Clark and Hotheyfa Gadour gave sixth placed Denaby Main a 4-1 away win over Sheffield Union. Division Two Just like their first team, Burngreave FC Reserves made it back-to-back wins for first time this term. Mehtaab Khan scored twice for Burngreave to inspire them to a 4-3 home win over Kinsley Boys. At Barnsley Academy School, Bank End AFC claimed their second league win of the season, a excellent 6-1 win against Thurcroft Miners Institute. 45s DIVISION 1 A twelve goal thriller between Dronfield Town (Black) and Ring O’Bells finished with Dronfield on top by 7-5 - scorers for the winners were Scott 3 and one each for Bentley, Brockwell, Rankin, and Palmer. Despite scring five Ring O’Bells were on the losing side, Grocott, Pugh, Morton, James and Fawcet. HSBC Bank Vets and Civil Sports played out a very lively encounter with the Referee having to work hard to maintain order which he did. HSBC Vets were the eventual winners by 3-2 wth Husband on the score sheet once again with a double and Haigh with the final goal.
45s DIVISION 2 Dronfield Town (Red) were 6-2 winners against Old Edwardians, Coddington scoring a double for the losers, Redman 2, Leatherday, Marklew, Butler and Oliver. Norfolk Arms and Hallam 1860 Old Boys B who are both aiming for top spot. WE GOT OUR JUST DESSERTS Garry Monk was delighted for his players following the 3-1 win at Charlton, insisting they got their rewards after recent frustration. The Owls ran out worthy winners in the capital to post a first win from six games to get the campaign back on track. Monk told swfc.
co.uk: “They got their just desserts today and they have seen for themselves how they can come back from some frustrating results and perform like that. “Charlton had injury problems but they are a difficult side no matter what and a confident side too with the momentum of
promotion. “But I thought we were very good today, very professional and we got the job done. “A lot of things haven’t gone our way recently but sometimes you have to make your own luck and we’ve done that today with a very professional performance.”
OWLS ENJOY LONDON TRIP Steven Fletcher’s brace and an Atdhe Nuhiu strike gave Wednesday a thoroughly deserved win at Charlton. Fletcher struck first before Macaulay Bonne equalised but a late Owls flurry spawned two more goals, another for Fletcher with Nuhiu putting the contest to bed. It was a good allround show from Wednesday, who had the ball in the net inside five minutes when Nuhiu glanced a Fernando Forestieri free kick home but an offside flag cut short the celebrations. Forestieri then had a go himself from
range only to see his daisycutter fizz the wrong side of the post. There was no margin for error, though, on 17 minutes as Wednesday hit the front. Barry Bannan delivered a first class cross into the box and Fletcher expertly directed his header into the far corner. The Owls pushed forward having seized the advantage and it could and should have been 2-0 on 25 minutes. Dillon Phillips produced a super save to keep out Fletcher’s header and Forestieri somehow scooped the rebound over the bar
from inside the sixyard box. And Wednesday were made to pay for that profligacy as the Addicks equalised a small matter of 75 seconds later. Alfie Doughty centred for Bonne and the young striker saw his scuffed shot bobble in with the aid of a deflection off the unfortunate Tom Lees. The Owls regrouped, promptly regained their composure and looked the more likely with half time approaching. And Charlton had Phillips to thank for going down the tunnel on level terms when the keeper darted off
his line to thwart the onrushing Bannan. Wednesday started the second period with intent and again it was Phillips to the rescue, once more denying Bannan, this time throwing himself to his right to parry round the post. The visitors then went on to assume more control, limiting the Londoners to rare counters, but they needed another breakthrough. Pressure came from both flanks and Harris was inches away on 65 minutes, thwarted by Phillips’ diving save after cutting in on the angle. Harris curled inches

OWLS DRAW BRIGHTON AWAY IN FA CUP THIRD ROUND Sheffield Wednesday will travel to Premier League Brighton in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup. HONOURS EVEN AT WOLVES United maintained an unbeaten Premier League away record thanks to a hard fought 1-1 draw against Wolves at Molineux. Lys Mousset opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the campaign after just two minutes, but despite creating numerous chances, United had to settle for a draw when Matt Doherty equalised in the second half for the home side. Boss Wilder opted for two changes to the side which drew against Manchester United last time out. Fit-again John Egan returned to the three-man central defence in place of Phil Jagielka, whilst ‘keeper Dean Henderson, who was ineligible for the clash with the Red Devils, returned between the sticks as Simon Moore dropped to the bench. The Blades made a lightning start to the game and were in front after just two minutes. With the first attack of the afternoon John Lundstram returned George Baldock’s throw before the wing-back crossed to MOUSSET who expertly controlled before drilling the ball low beyond Rui Patricio. Referee David Coote reached for his pocked to show Leander Dendoncker yellow for a trip on Mousset as United dominated the first 10 minutes. It could have been 2-0 when Mousset broke forward but his pass to the onrushing Lundstram was too heavy forcing the midfielder wide. Wolves threatened for the first time on 13 minutes. Matt Doherty drove past
his Republic of Ireland team-mate Enda Stevens; his deflected cross sat up well for Raul Jimenez whose powerful header was tipped over by Henderson. Soon after Stevens was into the book for hauling down Adama Traore, as the home side started to finally get a foothold in the game. Mousset remained a threat though for the Blades and he set off to collect Stevens’ pass but was denied a run on goal by the onrushing Patricio who sprinted off his line to clear. Lundstram did a great job defensively when he courageously blocked a longrange Ruben Neves strike as Wolves continued to work their way back into the contest. Whilst the home side were improving, United carried a real threat when attacking, with McGoldrick unfortunate with his control as he tried to latch onto a clever chipped Baldock pass into the area. Some terrific play from the Blades almost brought another opportunity on 33 minutes. John Fleck fed a pass into McGoldrick who cut into the area, he
then played a terrific disguised ball to the onrushing Stevens, but his cut-back from the by-line was held by Patricio. A minute later Chris Basham headed clear under pressure following a cross to the back post, and a VAR check followed for an alleged handball, but it was quickly waved away. With seven minutes remaining until the break, United opened up the opposition again. This time Stevens found Mousset who cleverly slid the ball into Fleck’s path, but his low effort was saved by the legs of Patricio. Stevens blazed over before the break, and Fleck also saw yellow as United took a lead into the interval. The Blades made a flying start to the second stanza when Fleck crossed from the left onto the chest of Mousset. He helped the ball into the path of McGoldrick whose shot was saved by the legs of the ‘keeper. The Blades ripped through the Wolves defence countless times as some good opportunities were created by Wilder’s side. Fleck was the architect twice, firstly when he slipped a
ball into McGoldrick whose low drive was parried by Patricio. Soon after, Fleck fed the ball into Mousset who blazed over from just inside the area. The yellow card count was starting to rise with both Baldock and Jack O’Connell going into the book. The Blades were certainly having the better chances but paid for not converting when Wolves equalised on 64 minutes. Raul supplied the ammunition with a deep cross to the back post and Doherty arrived to head home. United almost re-took the lead on 69 minutes when a terrific cross by Ollie Norwood was flicked just wide off the head of McGoldrick. The striker was then replaced for the last 20 minutes by Oli McBurnie as boss Chris Wilder made his first change. Baldock was fortunate not to see red when, already booked, he chopped down Diogo Jota, but he was let off with a warning. United were now on the back foot, but a tremendous defensive showing in the last 10 minutes ensured a share of the spoils.
FANCY A NIGHT OUT AT THE LANE?
Bramall Lane is used to the cheer of the football fans but on Friday 13th March it will be filled with the sounds of snoring as supporters of St Wilfrid’s Centre take to the stands for the night to ‘sleep out’, braving the elements to help raise funds for the much loved local charity. In it’s third year, St Wilfrid’s Sleep Out which chooses different locations each year, challenges people to get out of their comfort zone to sleep on the ground, to experience for one night, what it is like to be away from the comfort of their own home, to help raise awareness around the issues of homelessness. This year, United’s Bramall Lane will host the sleep out. Expecting to attract record numbers of participants, drawn from supporters and local businesses, the event aims to raise over £25,000 to help pay for the salary of a welfare worker, to work with vulnerable adults and rough sleepers. Leading a team from SUFC is Stephen Bettis, Chief Executive Officer “On behalf of the board, we are delighted to lend our support to this fantastic project. Along with our vice-presidents, I will be sleeping out and closer to the event we hope to be able to announce further members of the club also taking part. Sheffield United FC has a long history in assisting with the wonderful work that takes place just down the road at the St Wilfrid’s Centre and the 2020 Sleepout reinforces our strong partnership within the local community.” Stephen will be joined by the club’s Vice Presidents Graham Moore, Darren Baker, Mark Ross and Martin Green. Louise Finnigan, St Wilfrid’s Interim Director said: “Spending the night outside is always a challenge for anyone but those taking part in this event can go back to the comforts of their own home. We work with people at the Centre daily who aren’t so fortunate. We know first-hand how destructive sleeping rough is to people’s mental health and over all well-being. This event will help raise much needed money to pay for the salary of one of our welfare workers, who provides one to one support to people who live on the streets or live in temporary accommodation and support them getting involved in a wide variety of life enhancing skills and activities that we run here at the Centre or getting back on their feet. The need for our services is greater today than it has ever been and by taking part in the Sleep Out you are helping support the needs of some of Sheffield’s most vulnerable adults.” The event will see other key community members and some centre clients taking part and will play host to a couple of special memorable moments over the course of the evening, yet to be revealed. Places for the ‘sleep out’ are limited and are strictly via online registration only. Registration is £20 per person. Participants are encouraged to raise over £50 in sponsorship. The challenge will take place on Friday 13th March 2020. 100% of funds raised will go to St Wilfrid’s Centre. All running costs will be covered by the generous support of Westfield Health to ensure every penny raised makes a difference.
