SHEFFIELD NARROWLY MISSES OUT ON EUROPEAN CITY OF THE YEAR Sheffield narrowly missed out on being crowned European City of the Year by the Academy of Urbanism at the Urbanism Awards Ceremony in London last week. A three way battle between the South Yorkshire city, Porto and Utrecht was ultimately won by Porto. The Academy of Urbanism is a politically independent, not-for-profit organisation that brings together both the current and next generation of urban leaders, thinkers and practitioners. The academy’s annual Urbanism Awards celebrate outstanding

examples of good urbanism across the UK, Ireland and Europe, by recognising the best, most enduring or improved urban environments. The Academy or Urbanism commended Sheffield by saying: “Like all other UK core cities, Sheffield has relatively low economic power compared with most European OECD core cities, but the city has increasingly compensated by using the power of a combination of its unique environment, heritage, culture and, above all else, its people.” Earlier this year, Sheffield welcomed a delegation from the Academy

of Urbanism to learn more about the city’s innovations in urban development and meet a host of individuals at forefront of these flagship innovations. The delegation met with people from private, public, voluntary and third sectors to give a representation that is as true as possible to the make-up of the city. During the visit they took in an extensive tour of the city to see a wide variety of city projects, initiatives and organisations. These spanned from new developments like Kollider to those still underway like Parkhill; from The Heeley

Development Trust to Lady Cannings mountain bike trail in the Peak District; from Kelham Island to the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre; cultural immersion throughout the city; and from Hallam University’s Advanced Wellness Research Centre to the iconic Cutler’s Hall and city Cathedral. Over the last few years, Sheffield has seen resurgence as a destination with urbanism, foreign investment, culture and booming new sectors flourishing in spite of austerity. Progressive developments such as

STRONG & NORTHERN - WIN A HENDERSON’S COOK BOOK CELEBRATING SHEFFIELD’S ICONIC RELISH The new Henderson’s Relish cook book, Strong & Northern, features 60 recipes that reflect the diverse cultures in Sheffield today. A hardback with 192 pages, it covers the classics such as Meat and Potato Pie and Stew and Dumplings, as well as new and different dishes such as Pork Sancocho and Yemeni Chicken. Sections include pies and pastries, family favourites, one pot meals and Northern classics. There is a whole section dedicated to vegan dishes too. Each recipe features someone who loves Sheffield, and has served the city through their art, sporting endeavour, music, work, or community contribution. Henderson’s celebrates Sheffield through the voices of its fans, who describe their city, their story and their favourite Henderson’s dishes. The foreword is written by general manager Matt Davies, who comments: “We’re delighted to launch the new Henderson’s Relish Strong & Northern cook book, just in time

for Christmas. With new recipes that are easily achievable for home cooks, there’s something for Hendo’s fans everywhere – no matter what their tastes or dietary requirements.” The book is published by Meze Publishing, and featured contributors include England footballer Millie Bright and former world squash champion Nick Matthew – representing the city’s sporting prowess – as well as renowned artist Joe Scarborough and inaugural poet laureate Otis Mensah, leading lights of Sheffield’s thriving creative scene. Musicians, authors, charity workers, metal grinders and film makers share what Sheffield means to them: a global city that is a ‘big village’ that tastes just right. The Strong & Northern cook book is a 192 page hardback and retails at £20. It is available to purchase now from Henderson’s Relish at www. hendersonsrelish.com, Amazon, bookshops including Waterstones, local gift shops in the Sheffield area and online from www.mezepublishing.co.uk

Winter often exaggerates the pain and discomfort of arthritis. However there are ways in which a sufferer can alleviate the problems caused by this. From useful lifestyle changes to simple tricks to make everyday jobs easier, here are some practical tips for living with arthritis. Get sleep Consistently getting a good night’s sleep can go a long way, as studies have shown lack of sleep can worsen symptoms. Good sleep not only helps your body repair itself, but can also support your mental wellbeing when you’re dealing with pain regularly. Chronic arthritis sufferers will know this is sometimes easier said than done – but by helping to create the right conditions for sleep you can increase your chances of getting good rest. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day – keeping this routine is essential. Keep technology like televisions, tablets and smartphones out of your bedroom. Many people find nightly rituals like a warm bath, reading before bed, meditating or listening to music can help them wind down and drift off to sleep easier. Experiment and find a routine that works for you over time and if you’re struggling make an appointment to discuss it with your GP. Exercise When you’re struggling with joint pain, exercise may feel like the last thing you want to do, but it truly can help. It will not only help you keep your joint mobility up, but can help you sleep better and improve your mood. Try and do a combination of aerobic, strengthening and stretching exercises. Swimming and aquafit, gentle yoga, tai chi and walking are all good options. Stretch in the bath Warm water is ideal for helping your muscles to relax and to get some pain relief. Epsom salts can be extremely beneficial and are inexpensive and

readily available from most chemists. Set the temperature to warm but not too hot, and when you’re in the bath take the opportunity to stretch and move your joints. Use rubber bands and scissors Rubber bands placed around jar lids can help make gripping easier if you have arthritis in your hands or wrists. Carrying a small pair of scissors with you when you go out also makes it easier to open packages instead of using your teeth. Make a heat pack You can make your own heat pack by filling a large sock with rice and knotting it closed. Put this in the microwave to heat up – you can use it to help ease tension wherever you feel it. Choose pre-cut ingredients Most supermarkets now offer dozens of pre-prepared ingredients including chopped garlic, chopped onions, and pre-cut parchment paper to make everyday tasks like cooking dinner less troublesome. Look for tools For arthritis sufferers, one aspect of the condition that can be particularly upsetting is the loss of independence when it comes to everyday tasks. Think about your routine and look for places you can make life simpler for yourself by making one or two simple changes or getting some tools to help you. For example, a small trolley on wheels can make moving things around the home easier. Switching to a smaller, one-pot kettle or using a pod coffee machine can also help ease the burden of small athome tasks like making a cup of tea.

food charity aims to help 8000 more in 2020 A regional food charity has secured two new vans which will enable it to provide over 590,000 additional meals for people experiencing food insecurity over the next year. Thanks to funding from Asda, FareShare Yorkshire – which has warehouses in Barnsley and Leeds - has increased its food delivery capacity by adding two vans to its fleet, taking its total number of vehicles to seven. FareShare Yorkshire is the region’s largest food redistribution charity and working in partnership with FareShare UK provides surplus food to more than 231 frontline community groups and charities across Yorkshire - including homeless hostels, school breakfast clubs, rehabilitation centres and lunch clubs. They save over 812 tonnes of good surplus food from right across the food supply chain and redistribute it to 231 charities and community groups throughout the region. These charities provide meals as part of their services to people in need – such as children’s breakfast clubs, day clubs for older people, domestic violence refuges,

homeless shelters and drug and alcohol rehab units. In 2018/19 we provided enough food for over 1.9 million meals (worth £1,824,900 to the charity sector in savings), which helped to feed 24,717 people every week. The new vans will afford FareShare Yorkshire the capacity to recruit up to 69 new local projects next year, and the charity estimates the food it provides to these additional charities could reach up to 7,383 vulnerable people. According to official figures, 300,000 children in Yorkshire live in relative poverty. The need for FareShare’s service has never been higher and the new vans were therefore vital in order to meet the needs of the region’s most vulnerable people. The investment comes one year after FareShare Yorkshire relocated its Leeds operation to a new larger warehouse – supported by funding from ASDA – which helped the charity to increase the amount of food saved from waste, and provided to people in need, by 18 percent year-on-year. This increased impact has been made

possible thanks to investment from Asda as part of Fight Hunger Create Change a partnership between Asda, FareShare and the Trussell Trust which aims to support one million people in poverty across the UK. Over the course of three years, Asda is investing over £20 million to enable both charities to invest in infrastructure and offer more fresh food and crucial support to people in need. Gareth Batty, Chief Executive of FareShare Yorkshire, said: “FareShare Yorkshire has been fighting food insecurity across Yorkshire using surplus food since 1998, and in that time our impact has grown immeasurably – last year alone we provided enough food to create almost 2 million meals for people in need. But we know there is a demand for more support, with many families in Yorkshire living hand-to-mouth - which is why we welcome Asda’s continued investment, especially over Christmas – a time when families are so desperate for our support. If you would like to get involved and support, either by donating or volunteering, please get in touch. Just £1 can help FareShare to provide a meal

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL WINS BEST METROPOLITAN FESTIVAL AWARD AT UK FESTIVAL AWARDS Tramlines Festival 2019 has received the huge accolade of Best Metropolitan Festival at the prestigious UK Festival Awards 2019. It scooped the award for the second time (last in 2011) over big names including TRNSMT and All Points East at a ceremony held at The Troxy in London on Thursday 5th December. Tramlines Festival was also nominated in the category of Best Major Festival alongside Download, Glastonbury, Wireless and Latitude. Building on its continued success, Tramlines Festival

2020 will take place in Sheffield from Friday 31st July – Sunday 2nd August 2020 for its 12th edition, and the third year at its current home in Hillsborough Park just outside the city centre. Headliners for the 2020 event will be announced in February 2020, but based on the hardhitting 2019 line up featuring Two Door Cinema Club, Lewis Capaldi, Rag N Bone Man, Courteeners and Nile Rodgers & Chic, another exciting year is guaranteed. The UK Festival Awards 2019 also presented the Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals Award to

Jenny Hamada of AEG Presents. This award was created in 2018 in honour of the late Tramlines’ Director, Sarah Nulty who passed away just weeks before the 2018 event. Since last year, Sarah has received a whole host of posthumous awards including a civic award from The Lord Mayor of Sheffield and an Outstanding Contribution Gong from the UK’s Association of Independent Festivals (AIF). Tramlines Operations Director, Timm Cleasby commented: This is a truly amazing moment for Tramlines and a great recognition

of all the hard work over the last decade or so, we’re chuffed to bits. Being named alongside big hitters such as Download and Glastonbury in the Best Major Festival category also shows just how far we’ve come as an event. It was fantastic to see Jenny Hamada win the Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals Award, Sarah contributed hugely to making Tramlines what it is now and it’s amazing to see the continued acknowledgment for her work. This award is big for Sheffield too and means a lot for the local scene. Many thanks! Whilst the Tramlines

line up gets bigger each year, it remains seriously good value for money. Tickets have been selling faster than ever and are now on the fifth tier. Adult tickets are priced at £89.50 and children’s tickets start from £3 for all

three days (both plus booking fees). During the Christmas period, Tramlines are offering a free Xmas Scarf to all ticket purchasers. For full ticketing info, visit www.tramlines.org. uk.

St Agnes Fountain WEDNESDAY 18TH DECEMBER 2019 Show at 7:30pm December Tour St Agnes Fountain come together for one month a year; the Christmas Tour each December. Performing “rhythmed-up” carols and Christmas music, interspersed with laughter and spoken word. Founder member, David Hughes, and Chris Leslie originally released an EP of six tracks, “Acoustic Christmas” on guitar and mandolin in 1998. It sold out in three months and that was that but there was a clamour for more and, together with their friends, Chris While and Julie Matthews, they produced their first album, “St Agnes Fountain” in 2001. Not content with the album, the While & Matthews team organised a tour in December of that year and the response was overwhelming. The same reaction has greeted the band every year since with appearances on Radio 2 and other stations. Concert tickets are hot property. St Agnes Fountain will take their brand new studio album, their eighth, “Christmas Is Not Far Away” on the road in December. It is the season their legion of fans have been waiting for because, as they say, “Christmas doesn’t start till St Agnes Fountain”.

Back by popular demand after their amazing début SOUL TRAIN will once again steam back into Penistone Harking back to when the dance floor was king, the show features 60s and 70s soul classics like Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers, Supremes, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye,Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Candi Staton, Whitney Houston and along with their fine feast of soulful gems its that time for many of your festive favourites too. We are gonna Let It Snow in our Winter Wonderland because were sure Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and so All I Want For Christmas Is You !!! After a very poor run of form, I’ve finally had a fish on the bank this week, but I suffered for it! The weather has improved no end, so with some sunshine finally on the horizon, I set off for one of my Stokeon-Trent Angling Society waters, Stanley Pool. It’s a thirty odd acre water, with depths to beyond thirty feet, but a quick cast with the Deeper Chirp+ sonar showed plenty of roach, and where there are roach, there are pike, so I set up in a promising spot… My ‘go to’ bait has always been a roach deadbait, but just recently I’ve been having more success with smelt, so my first cast was to launch a frozen Baitbox offering as far as I could cast to plunge through the roach shoal and rest on the bottom, hopefully in the vicinity of a hungry pike. The second rod held a small mackerel, and this too was fired out some distance to offer a variety of food for any peckish predator. Obviously, then it was time for tea, so I sat down to watch the sun creep slowly over the hill and bathe the reservoir in a gorgeous orange glow; I love autumn mornings! I soon got warm. I’ve been in the market for a new bib and brace/jacket combination and this week took delivery of the Gorka 7 suit from Grizzlyman clothing. I’ve been walking up on the top of the local moors in it, and it kept me warm and dry, I’ve been out pigeon shooting in it too, again, snug and comfortable amongst the dripping woodland, so it was time to do something a bit less active and see if would be suitable for freezing mornings on the banks whilst fishing. It’s a two piece set, padded trousers with removable braces feature a thermal lining with stirrups to stop them riding up over boots, reinforced knees and plenty of pockets with big button fastenings which are easy to use with cold, wet hands. The jacket also has a thermal fleece lining, reinforced shoulder pads which cushion your gun butt or provide extra comfort when carrying rucksacks, loads more pockets, a peaked hood and more easy buttons. So far, I’m impressed, and I have worn less layers underneath as a result so it’s easy to move around in too. The best thing about the new suit is that it currently retails for less than £100 and has no added ‘carp tax’! Check out the full range of Grizzlyman clobber at www. grizzlyman.uk Back on the bank, and the first couple of hours passed quietly. I was visited by two amiable representatives of the Environment Agency who politely checked my rod licence and stopped by for a chat before wandering off to check other anglers. On their return, a single bleep had me on the rod but nothing developed, so I reset the smelt slightly further out and returned to my tea. Ten minutes later, the alarm bleeped again, the drop off pinged loose, and my braid started to spin away! I hit the fish immediately and played it for a couple of minutes before the line went slack and it spat the hooks. I wasn’t

happy, it was the third fish I’d lost in a row, so I changed the trace for a brand new one, replaced the smelt and hurled it back out before tightening up and settling back down. I inspected the replaced trebles but couldn’t see anything wrong so safely discarded it into my rubbish bag and poured another brew; just bad luck I suppose… Within minutes, the smelt was picked up again and this time the pike was safely landed after a dogged scrap. Once in the net, it was lifted into the cradle to be unhooked, which is where the fun started. I’ve been fishing for pike for years and I’m always careful with them, having everything laid out in preparation, but this one caught me out. Only one treble had engaged, the top one which had two points embedded, the other lay with one point in the net. I don’t mess about, the trace was unclipped, the rod put aside, and the trace snipped between the two trebles; I didn’t want the pike to spin and cause damage to itself, or me, so it was removed from the equation. The remaining treble needed a point snipping off with sidecutters before it fell away, but within perhaps fifteen seconds, everything was safely out of the way, so it was time for the catch shot. It was a beautifully marked fish of perhaps fifteen pounds, full and fat, but feisty with it and as I slipped my left hand under the gill plate and down to the point of the jaw, then adjusted my right hand along its body to lift it securely, the pike twisted onto my left thumb and I felt instant pain! I usually keep things tight, but my thumb had strayed too close to the teeth and both top and bottom gnashers had sliced open my thumb. The pike was quickly returned in the net as blood dripped freely and I set about repairing the damage. I couldn’t see exactly where the teeth had caught me as there was so much blood, but after going through four clean towels, it became apparent that a cut of about an inch in length was leaking badly, but on the underside of my thumb, a series of five or six holes were losing even more! It was one of those instances where you consider whether to it was time to pack up early and get it properly seen too. It was, I couldn’t stop it dripping despite twice applying plaster tape which quickly soaked through, and I couldn’t keep it clean. Fortunately, I wasn’t far from home so chucked everything in the van and drove back to get cleaned up. I’ve done lots of first aid in the past, dealing with everything from decapitation, burns, traumatic amputation and crush injuries as a firefighter, so the sight of blood doesn’t bother me, but it was suggested a trip to hospital might be in order. Some years ago, I recalled that I’d trapped my hand resulting in broken fingers and tissue damage; I was at sea at the time, and the ‘doc’ (scab lifter) sprayed my hand with plastic skin to stop the bleeding until it could be stitched properly, so instead of hospital, the wife was despatched to the chemist to pick up something similar as my thumb dripped into the sink. Liquid plaster and surgical superglue liberally applied, the bleeding finally stopped, but oh my life, does that stuff sting! Now, it just looks a bit untidy, with a shiny sheen over the top where the adhesives are affixed, but it will heal, and from now on, not only will I keep my mitts out of the way, surgical superglue and liquid plaster will form part of my pike fishing kit…just in case! Next week, I think I’ll fish for chub, it’s a lot less painful!

WE NEEDED THE FIRST GOAL - WARNE Millers manager Paul Warne was left frustrated after a narrow home defeat against Rochdale this afternoon. Speaking to the press following the game, Warne said, “It wasn’t a bad performance but I won’t lie and say it was it was an excellent performance, either.

“We’ve got a bit of an issue with our home form and I apologise to the fans because they haven’t seen us play at our best. All our best performances have been away from home. “For 90 minutes I don’t think, individually, we were at our best. A few of the lads had a bit of a lesser day. I haven’t

got an excuse for it. I’ve only got reasons in my head which I’ll keep to myself. “I’m asking the lads to get the ball wide and in the box. Someone told me we put 48 crosses in the box. We seemed to have loads of set-pieces, loads of free-kicks and corners. For whatever reason it didn’t drop for us.” The opening and winning goal came on 42 minutes as Aaron Morley swept into the top corner from the edge of the box. “They scored an unbelievable goal,” added Warne. “As soon as he hit it, I thought ‘that’s in’, in a similar part of the pitch the ball fell to Crooksy and

MOORE PLEASED TO SEE ROVERS DIG IN Darren Moore felt his side earned a deserved point after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with MK Dons to round off a busy week. Cameron John’s late leveller secured a share of the spoils for Rovers, and the manager says it was warranted based on chances created. He said: “When you look at the stats we had seven shots on target so we felt in terms of the overall play we deserved at least a point. “It’s our third game at the end of a tough week so it was good to not go home empty handed after going a goal down. “It was a good

footballing match and I think both teams will come away from it having deserved to take something from the game.” Having faced three tiring games inside seven days, starting with

his return to league action with a goal. “It was a good feeling to be back on the scoresheet, it was a bit of a messy goal but sometimes you need goals that are scrappy like that - for me it was good to be back playing in the league and getting a goal,” he said. “I didn’t score any last season so I’m not quite sure where these goals have come from to be honest, it feels nice though to chip in and help the team - no matter whether it’s up front or defending I’m always happy to help.” Saturday saw John complete a second 90 minutes on his return from a recent injury, and the defender on loan from Premier League

the ball’s sent wide. So, sometimes it’s the smallest of margins and it’s a frustrating thing because everyone’s turned up here today with optimism after our recent run and we’re playing a team that are struggling. “In fairness, the fans stayed which is great of them. We’ve got a really good team here and we’re hugely disappointed with the result. “We had enough balls in the box. We started okay and as soon as we put a cross in I thought we were going to score. We had the offside goal and I just thought we needed that first goal. We keep saying it and the more you say it, the bigger the to not be beaten. He added: “We’ve had a quick turnaround and used our squad, but we’re missing players through injury and suspension so could not rotate as much as maybe I’d have liked. “MK Dons are a team who have had a tough start but they battled with us, we had chances but so did they.”

issue becomes. It would have settled our nerves. “We didn’t follow a runner and he’s bent one in from 20 yards. All of a sudden it becomes more pressure. I can’t knock the lads’

effort, you can see how desperate they are to win. I changed the system three times and couldn’t have put any more attacking power on the pitch. “I didn’t know what

IT’S A PRAISE FOR SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY! Garry Monk had nothing but praise for his players after they came from behind to beat Brentford on Saturday. A double from Steven Fletcher overturned Bryan Mbeumo’s opener to propel Wednesday back into the top six. And Monk told swfc.co.uk: “It’s a praise for the players because they have come back to win against a very good side fresh from scoring seven goals. “It was a praise in the second half but a

grumble in the first because what we produced in the first half was way below the levels we are capable of and what we expect. “To be honest, I could have made seven changes at half time because, the first 10 minutes aside, we were so under par. “But in the second half, we were so much better and we went to those levels where we should be. “I can’t praise the players enough because Brentford are a very good side and they’ve turned that

game around.” Monk picked out the performance of Fletcher, together with second half sidekick Jordan Rhodes, who was introduced at the break. Rhodes made an impact in the final third, proving a menace across the Bees’ backline. The Owls’ boss added: “I was really pleased for Jordan, he came on and stretched the game. “He got in behind the defence, created room for Fletch, and caused them problems. “Fletch is right at it

at the moment and he thoroughly deserves the rewards of his hard work. “He’s worked hard on his fitness, he trains

MONK: 'IT PUTS EVERYTHING INTO PERSPECTIVE' Wednesday boss Garry Monk has hailed the importance of the club’s unique #BlueAndWhiteChristmasDay following the huge success of Monday’s annual event. The Owls spread their wings around the Steel City yesterday, visiting the Children’s Hospital, St Luke’s Hospice, Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield Royal Society For The Blind, Hallam FM Cash For Kids and Grenoside Grange Hospital. And Monk was delighted his squad made their mark on one of the most rewarding community

events of the year. He said: “It is good to show our support and put a bit of a smile on their faces. Football clubs are viewed as a big part of the community. "People rely on those football clubs to pick them up when they are down and sometimes help them when they are not so happy in certain situations. "These visits are always very special, especially to come here and meet a lot of young people who maybe are not in as fortunate position healthwise as we are. "It is great to show them support and put a bit of

a smile on their faces and give them Christmas cheer. "When you speak to the parents, you realise how tough it is at this time of year when it is supposed to be about family and celebration. "There are people out there in a much less fortunate position than you. It is a great day and puts everything into

perspective. "Footballers can often be in a bubble or put on a pedestal so it is good for them to come out and get a reality check.” Wednesday are offering a huge vote of thanks to the fantastic charities and hospitals who gave us such a warm welcome for this year’s #BlueAndWhiteChristmasDay.

they have proved to themselves today that they can come back to win against really good teams and that can only serve us well for the future.”

CLUB STATEMENT Sheffield Wednesday Football Club has today (4th Dec) filed its response to the charges brought against it by the English Football League for alleged misconduct concerning the sale and leaseback of Hillsborough stadium and the inclusion of the profit on that sale in the Club’s 2017/18 accounts. The Club has informed the EFL that the charges are themselves unlawful and, without prejudice to that fact, are all denied by the Club and the other Respondents. The Club has reserved all of its rights against the EFL and will take all such actions as are necessary to protect its rights and integrity, and those of its current and former officers, including in relation to inaccurate reporting. The Club has also notified the EFL that it stands ready to bring a claim against the EFL to obtain compensation for its conduct. The Club maintains that it consulted with the relevant executive officers of the EFL in connection with the stadium transaction and that it acted in good faith. The Club has in its possession numerous emails, letters and other documents in which the EFL gave authorisation to the transaction, and on which authorisation the Club understood it could rely. That authorisation gave rise in law to a legitimate expectation that the transaction would be accepted by the EFL, which is binding on the EFL. The EFL is acting in breach of that binding legitimate expectation by retrospectively treating as misconduct that which it had itself previously authorised, and this makes the charges themselves unlawful. The Club is accordingly bringing its own claim against the EFL to establish that it is acting unlawfully, as well as standing ready, if necessary, to vigorously defend the charges. The Club will make no further comment at this time.

BLADES NEWS2019/20 The North’s largest entertainment weekly, telephone our sales team to get your advert on these pages 0114 276 3633 opt.1

COMEBACK WIN FOR BLADES United deservedly left Carrow Road with all three points, following an excellent secondhalf comeback in Norfolk. Alex Tettey fired the home side in front just before the half hour, but two goals in seven minutes after the restart swung the game decisively in the Blades favour, with Enda Stevens and George Baldock the scores. VAR played a role in the game, checking a number of decisions by referee Simon Hooper, but it helped United late on when Chris Basham’s straight red was downgraded to a yellow following a lengthy review. For the clash against the Canaries, boss Wilder made two changes following Thursday’s loss to Newcastle. Mousset and McGoldrick started in attack, with McBurnie and Sharp named amongst the substitutes. Inside a minute the Blades were on the front foot, but from the left, Fleck’s low cross evaded everyone. In response, the home side a flurry of early corners, but Henderson’s first meaningful save saw him comfortably

deny McLean. On 26 minutes United had their first sight of goal, but despite a poor clearance by Godfrey, McGoldrick’s goal bound effort hit Zimmermann and subsequently made Krul’s save much easier. Less than 60 seconds later City went in front as TETTEY fired home with a left-footed strike through a crowded box after the Blades failed to fully clear Buendia’s corner from the right and the goal stood despite a VAR check, with the ball appearing to catch Zimmermann’s hand in the build-up. The lively Buendia continued to cause United problems, but his theatrical fall in the box failed to convince referee Hooper to award a penalty, despite claims from the hosts. United, who were now on the back foot, received two yellow cards in a matter of minutes before the break with Egan and Norwood cautioned for incidents involving Pukki and Buendia. After a below par first-half showing, the Blades were out of the blocks quickly following the restart and scored twice

in three minutes to turn the game on it’s head. On 49 minutes, STEVENS rose above Aarons to head powerful past Krul’s despairing dive. Moments later, BALDOCK went from provider to scorer, starting and finishing a move, that ended with him firing low and hard into Krul’s far post. As the hour approached, United had the ball in the net again, with Lundstram playing to the whistle and firing home, despite Hernandez seemingly fouling Basham in the box seconds before. VAR checked the goal, which was chalked off, but perhaps surprisingly failed to have a look at the early foul, which would have seen the Blades awarded a penalty. Norwood and Mousset, who had picked up a knock following an awkward landing, were replaced by Bešić and Robinson respectively, before VAR finally gave the Blades a needed decision. Basham had been given a straight red after a lunge on McLean, but replays showed he had made no contact with his opponent and the tackle

was subsequently downgraded to a yellow card and United’s number six, who was on the touchline was beckoned by on to the field by the referee. There were little over ten minutes remaining when McGoldrick came so close to adding a third, with two efforts in consecutive attacks. His first shot went inches wide of Krul’s far post after a run by Bešić, before he fired over after a through ball from Lundstram. But at the other end, United were indebted to Henderson, who produced a worldclass save to deny substitute Cantwell, one that he celebrated by with the Blades fans, by pointing to them and pumping his chest. McBurnie took the place of McGoldrick, before Henderson kept his composure to claim a number of crosses that were thrown into his box as United saw out six minutes of stoppage time to claim the spoils and maintain the unbeaten run away from S2.

WILDER ON NORWICH VAR CALLS Even with Chris Basham’s red card rescinded by VAR, the Blades boss doesn’t think the balance is right for the tiny percentages gained. Chris Wilder says he was disappointed with how the Norwich City players reacted following Chris Basham’s challenge on Kenny McLean at Sunday. The Blades defender was given a straight red by referee Simon Hooper, before VAR reviewed the tackle and downgraded it to a yellow, much to the relief of Wilder, who had some sympathy with the referee. That decision went in United’s favour, but the Blades boss felt his side should have had a second-half penalty shortly after taking the lead when Onel Hernandez barged through the back of Basham in the penalty area, but despite another lengthy VAR review, the initial decision wasn’t corrected. Even with Chris Basham’s red card rescinded by VAR, the Blades boss doesn’t think the balance is right for the tiny percentages gained.

FESTIVE TOUR SET FOR BOXING DAY Enjoy a belated Christmas present with us at Bramall Lane, ahead of the Boxing Day clash against Watford. A ground tour for supporters will begin in our Legends of the Lane museum at 11am, where fans will get the opportunity to look through a number of fabulous collections and historic club memorabilia. You will then head behind the scenes, into the inner sanctum of S2 on a matchday, walking down the players tunnel and out into Chris Wilder’s technical area and dugout. The directors box is the next port of call, where you will learn some fascinating festive facts and figures about our famous home, the world changing events that have happened inside the stadium and of course everything you could possibly want to know about the Blades. The tour will last approximately one hour and is the perfect way to soak up the prematch atmosphere, prior to the clash against the Hornets. Fans are politely asked to note this is NOT a ‘meet the players’ event and due to the historic content of the tour, it’s not aimed at the very youngest of our fanbase. Tickets, which are on sale now, are priced just £10 adults and £6 concessions and they can be purchased in person, online and by telephone on 0114 253 7200 (option 1).
