SHEFFIELD SHORTLISTED FOR ‘BEST OVERALL SCHEME’ IN BEST BAR NONE AWARDS competition from Tower Hamlets and Torbay, as to which scheme has had the biggest overall impact in its community in the last 12 months. There have been a record nine regional finalists announced ahead of this instalment of the awards, with each of the three categories, Best Overall Scheme, Most Innovative Scheme and Best New Scheme, seeing a year on year increase in the number of successful entries. Sheffield is one of the UK’s longest running and successful Best Bar None schemes and over the last year, the city has continued to be at the forefront of innovation

and good practice. The scheme was integral in the development of the new BBN app, which has subsequently been rolled out across seven other regions. Tracey Ford, Scheme Coordinator for Sheffield, said: “We have really focussed on offering support, sharing good practice and developing in other areas this year – for example our continued work to combat sexual harassment on nights out by launching ‘Ask for Angela’, where customers can subtly alert trained staff if they are feeling threatened by someone. “Winning the national award would be a significant achievement

for us, and would mean a lot, to not only the licensed premises in Sheffield, but also all of our stakeholders who absolutely deserve recognition for sustaining the scheme over the past eleven years.” Lord Smith of Hindhead, Philip Smith, Chairman of Best Bar None, said: “It is always fantastic to see such a good turnout for our annual awards. I want to highlight the importance of commending those schemes that are doing such a wonderful job. The impact that Best Bar None has in towns and cities today - making them safer and more desirable places to go - is relevant and valuable to the entire

The Sheffield Best Bar None scheme has been shortlisted for the ‘Best Overall Scheme’ in the prestigious Best Bar None Awards, it has been announced. The next round of judging will take place in January, before the winner is announced at a ceremony held in the House of Lords on Tuesday 4th February 2020. This is the second year running Sheffield has made it through to the final stages of judging, being recognised as ‘Highly Commended’ after narrowly missing out to Plymouth in last year’s awards. This year the region faces

Hospitality Industry and it is everyone on the ground who we have to thank for that. “It is particularly encouraging to see Sheffield back in the finals this year. We look only at the previous 12 months when judging the category, so it just goes to show that they are continuing to maximise their impact on the local community and maintaining strong and proactive relationships with their local authorities, that we see them here today.” Best Bar None is a Home Office-backed scheme that sees the alcohol industry working collaboratively with local authorities and the police to promote responsible drinking and higher professional licensing standards in bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants.

PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO ROTHERHAM TAXI REGULATIONS Rotherham Council is set to consult on changes to its current taxi licensing policy to ensure licensed drivers, vehicles and operators in the borough continues to be of the highest standard. The Council’s Cabinet will consider plans to extend the

storage capacity of incar camera systems, incentivise the use of ultra-low emission vehicles and improve vehicle signage so the public can more easily recognise a Rotherham licensed taxi and driver. Cabinet Member for Waste, Roads & Community Safety, Councillor Emma

Hoddinott, said: “The Council’s taxi licensing policy has come a long way since changes were introduced in 2015 and we are committed to further improving taxi licensing for customers, drivers and operators. “We already have strong regulations in place, but there

are areas that could be improved. Some of the suggested changes have been put forward following discussions with drivers and operators across the borough.” Other recommendations put forward include: • Ensuring staff with access to booking records

meaning that, with prior agreement from the Licensing Manager, a medical assessment can be carried out by a GP practice other than the driver’s own. • Strengthening the Council’s approach to equality and diversity to ensure that both taxi operators and customers are protected from hate crime • Refresher training

or responsible for dispatching vehicles undergo appropriate safeguarding checks • Clearer signage for passengers who want to activate audio recording • More options for the way drivers display their badge when on duty • Changes to driver medical assessments

and assessment on a drivers’ knowledge, driving ability and approach to safeguarding vulnerable passengers to take place when a licence is renewed. The Council introduced a Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy in July 2015 which is widely regarded as the gold standard for other local authorities to benchmark against

in relation to Taxi and Private Hire licensing. Subject to Cabinet approval on 23 December, the new measures will be put out to formal consultation with taxi users, drivers and operators. Following the consultation period, a final version of the policy will be presented back to the Council’s Cabinet for consideration.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

I cut down a Christmas tree today. My wife asked me if I was going to put it up myself. I said: “Of course not. I was going to put it up in the living room.” Based upon my shameful behaviour after drinking, I finally decided to quit drinking altogether. Now I drink alone. My book on clocks finally arrived. It’s about time! What kind of music do elfs listen to? Wrap music. Which weighs more, a gallon of water or a gallon of butane? A gallon of water. Butane is a lighter fluid. What kind of doctor is Dr. Pepper? A fizzician. I spent £80 on a belt that didn’t fit. My wife said it was a huge waist.

THE STORY BEHIND THE BEARS SET TO WANDER THE STREETS OF SHEFFIELD IN 2020 After the success of the Herd of Sheffield in 2016 with the stampede of elephants, The Children’s Hospital Charity are back again with a city wide, mass participation art exhibition and it’s beary exciting! But the question on everyone’s lips is- why bears? The elephant trail three years ago was inspired by World War One elephant Lizzie who was employed by the steel industry in Sheffield as the cities horses were employed by the military. The theme for the bear trail comes from the charity mascot Theo and the well-known Sheffield bear sculpture located in the Botanical Garden’s bear pit. David Mayne, the designer of the bear in the Botanical Garden’s said: “It was a real surprise when David from the charity asked if the original design could be used and whether I would be happy to be involved in the project to create pieces that could become part of a new bear hunt. “I never realised just how iconic and how well loved this sculpture would become. I have worked on numerous public art commissions throughout the country but this piece has always been my personal favourite and probably will be for the rest of my

career. “I found it fascinating visiting the company who have created the Bears for the sculpture trail, recreating a smoother bear that can be painted whilst most importantly retaining an essence of the original, and I’m absolutely thrilled that my sculpture could be the reason that thousands of pounds are raised for the children’s hospital.” The company producing the bear sculpture is Simpson Patterns Ltd, a Sheffield company based in Darnall who specialise in services from design, modelling, prototype and manufacturing solution to specific engineering requirements. Mark Rixham, Managing Director of Simpson Patterns Ltd said: “We are honoured to have been selected to work with The Children’s Hospital Charity on this project alongside fellow Sheffield artist David Mayne to bring his bear to life. “Working on this project has been a team effort. We are hoping it to be a resounding success for the charity. We’re looking forward to seeing the results of our work and joint collaboration installed around Sheffield beautifully decorated by a number of talented artists.” The first to decorate a bear will be local artist Jo Peel, whose work documents everyday scenes, telling stories over the world around her as she explores its changing face. Her work can be seen around Sheffield in the form of huge public murals. Cheryl Davidson, Project Manager of the bears at the charity added: “We wanted to incorporate the personality of bears into everything we do for this trail. Although some might be named grizzly, bears are gentle and tolerant by nature. “They can be empathetic, joyful, playful and social in character. So, whenever you see one of our bears on the trail next year make sure you give them a big, giant bear hug!” All funds raised through the Bears of Sheffield will help transform the Cancer and Leukaemia Ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The ward treats children from babies through to 19-year olds from South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and as far south as Northampton. The transformed ward would create a new home from home for families with space, privacy and natural light to make hospital stays and isolation a place of sanctuary and calm. If your business or company would like to sponsor one of the bears you can get in contact with the team at sculpture@tchc.org.uk There’s also a final call out for artists, designers and illustrators to get involved and submit their designs for the bears, more info is available on website along with the artists submission form: https://www.tchc. org.uk/bears-of-sheffield-artists.html

ISSUE 1349 18/12/2019

tis’ the season to be - extra careful! People in Yorkshire are being warned to be extra vigilant this Christmas as scam callers typically ramp up their activity during the festive period in the hope of cashing in. As people in Yorkshire rush around in the run-up to Christmas sorting out their to-do lists, scammers are ready to strike and take advantage of distracted people who may say ‘yes’ to something without checking first if its genuine. And with most of us spending more time at home over the holiday period we are more susceptible to take these calls and could lose out. In a bid to beat the scammers this Christmas, CPR Call Blocker, makers of the world’s best-selling call blocking device, have compiled the top five active scams that people in Yorkshire should watch out for this festive season: • HMRC Scam – you may get a call from someone claiming to be from HMRC saying there is an issue with your tax refund or an unpaid tax bill. They leave a message asking you to call back. HMRC would never contact you in this way and ask for personal information and bank details. • Bank Scam – someone may call claiming to be from your bank saying there’s a problem with your card or account. They may ask for your account, card and PIN details. They may also advise transferring your money to a ‘safe’ account to protect it. A bank would never ask you to do this. • Amazon Prime Scam – you may get a call from someone claiming to be from Amazon Prime saying you’ve been charged for an annual subscription. They then tell you that fraudsters have hacked your account to authorise payment, but it can be cancelled if you press 1 and then give access to your bank account in order to undo the hack. Amazon Prime would

never ask you to do this. • Computer Repair Scam – someone calls claiming to be from a well-known IT firm such as Microsoft to tell you your computer has a virus. They will ask you to download ‘anti-virus software’ which may cost but also turns out to be spyware, used to get your personal details. IT companies don’t contact customers this way. • Number Spoofing Scam – Scammers have the technology to mimic an official telephone number so it shows on your caller ID. This can trick you into thinking the call is legitimate. If in doubt, hang up and call the organisation directly using a number you have sourced. Wait at least 10 minutes before making the call as scammers can keep the phone line open for a short while, meaning you will still be connected to the scammer. While the list is not exhaustive, CPR Call Blocker hopes to make people in Yorkshire aware that scammers are becoming more inventive and if something sounds too good to be true or out of the ordinary, then it could well be a scam. Chelsea Davies from CPR Call Blocker said: “Many of us can feel distracted, stressed and tired by the seemingly never-ending stream of tasks at this time of year. And when we’re feeling frazzled, it can be too easy to say “yes” to something without checking first whether it’s genuine. And then with many of us spending more time at home over Christmas, we’re there to pick up more calls. This makes for the perfect storm for scammers. So, while you’re thinking about gift ideas and what’s next on TV, scammers are thinking about getting their hands on your cash this festive season. We’re warning people in South Yorkshire to bear this in mind and

festive blood donors needed!

safety on local streets

NHS Blood and Transplant is appealing to blood donors to book festive appointments and donate blood on either Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve at the following venue: Tuesday, December 24, from 1:35pm to 3:45pm Currently this session is only 69% full. Thursday, December 26, from 8am to 3:45pm Currently this session is only 29% full. Tuesday, December 31, from 8am to 3:45pm Currently this session is only 12% full. Cathedral Court, Church Street Sheffield S1 2GN Christmas is not a time for the NHS to stop – patients need life-saving blood all year round. It’s vital that anyone who books to give blood this Christmas period sticks to their appointment. Each donation can save up to three lives. Please call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk to book an appointment to donate. Donors are asked to make appointments or to call ahead rather than walking in.

Crimestoppers has launched a new campaign this week which focuses on serious organised crime gangs operating across parts of Sheffield and asking people to speak up 100% anonymously if they have information about those who are involved. Serious organised crime has a major impact across communities as their activities typically involve weapons, violence and intimidation to sell class A drugs, organise human trafficking and be involved in money laundering. Crimestoppers knows it can be difficult for people to speak up about serious crime when they see it, but your information could be vital to helping make our communities safer. The two-week campaign will include promote Crimestoppers unique service and appeal for information about large organised criminal gangs in the area. Rewards of up to £1,000 are available if the information given anonymously to Crimestoppers leads to a positive result. Gemma Gibbs, of Crimestoppers, said: “Criminal gangs are operating in Sheffield and bring violence and intimidation to otherwise peaceful communities. Our charity believes passionately in giving

we would always strongly recommend never giving your bank details or paying for something over the phone that you’re unsure of. Especially if the call you receive is the first time you have heard of any payment that needs to be made.” If you want to stop receiving scam and nuisance calls this Christmas, follow CPR Call Blocker’s quick three-step guide to stopping unwanted calls: • Sign up to the Telephone Preference Service – call 0845 070 0707 or visit www.tpsonline.org.uk. • Don’t consent to being contacted – get your phone number taken off directories and look out for tick boxed on all marketing correspondence to see if ticking or unticking them will prevent your details being passed on to third parties. • Consider getting a call blocker. If you think you may be receiving scam calls, here are a few ways to protect yourself: • Don’t reveal personal details. Never give out personal or financial information such as your bank account details or PIN – even if the caller claims to be from your bank. • Hang up. If you feel harassed or intimidated, end the call. You have the right not to feel pressurised. • Ring the organisation. If you’re unsure whether the caller is genuine, you can always ring the company they claim to be from. Make sure you find the number yourself and don’t use one provided by the caller. • Don’t be rushed. Scammers will try to rush you into providing personal details. They may say they have a timelimited offer or claim your bank account is at risk if you don’t give them the information they need right away.

people, who feel unable to speak directly to police because of fear of reprisals or cultural reasons, a voice so that they can speak up about what they know. Some of you will know who is involved in recent incidents of violence by organised gangs. We know it can be difficult to speak up especially if it is about crime happening on your street possibly involving people you know. which is why our charity is here to help. Have you seen unusual activity? Different vehicles coming and going? Heard things happening on your street that you’re uncomfortable with? People living lavish lifestyles, but not having a job? We value safe communities and are keen to hear from people who know about the people bringing serious crime to Sheffield. In over 31 years we have always kept our promise of anonymity to the millions of people who have trusted us. Call 0800 555 111 or use our anonymous online form at Crimestoppers-uk.org. We cannot trace calls or get IP addresses. Not even we will know your identity when you contact us to pass on information. By providing information, you can help keep our streets safe.”

TO ADVERTISE CALL 0114 2763701 OR EMAIL INFO@MERCURYNEWSPAPER.CO.UK MAJOR GLOBAL LAW FIRM BECOMES SECOND ANCHOR TENANT OF HEART OF THE CITY II Top 10 global law firm, CMS, is set to become the second anchor tenant in the Heart of the City II scheme being delivered by Sheffield City Council. CMS has over 70 offices located across over 40 countries. The company is set to reaffirm its future in Sheffield, relocating from its current base at Victoria Quays and preserving the firm’s presence as a major employer in the city. CMS is to take 47,500 sq ft of premium Grade A office space within the same landmark building that is also the new home to HSBC. The move further strengthens the emergence of Heart of the City II as a new financial and professional services district for the Sheffield City Region. CMS will occupy the 26,000 sq ft that makes up 1 Charter Square, plus an additional 21,500 sq ft of adjoining space. The new office will be entirely self-contained and separate to HSBC, with a bespoke entrance, reception and signage facing onto Wellington Street and connecting to the impressive public realm of Charter Square. Commenting on the announcement, Nalin Seneviratne, Director of City Centre Development at Sheffield City Council, said: “This announcement marks a major vote of confidence in the Heart of the City II scheme. CMS, along with HSBC, brings a wide range of people, long-term into the city centre, creating an exciting buzz and interest in the proposed bars, restaurants, shops, leisure and hotels within the scheme. “We’ve always said that this project needs to be flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances and market conditions. This letting has shown our ability to deliver this, reconfiguring some larger retail units within the block to

provide the scale of office CMS required, in the necessary timescale. “The office space is now fully let, and we have secured Monki, Weekday and Marmadukes in the ground floor units that are more suited to the type of specialist retail, and food and drink occupiers that want to be within this quality scheme.” Paul Sargent, Chief Executive of Queensberry, added: “As the Council’s Strategic Development Partner for Heart of the City II, we see this as a significant milestone in the development of our vision for Sheffield. Our ambition has always been to deliver a new commercial district that can evolve over time in line with the wider region’s economy – this is a great example of the way that strategy is becoming a reality. “We are particularly pleased about the way we have been able to accommodate CMS in the scheme by taking an adaptable approach and reworking the original design, therefore guaranteeing CMS’s long-term future in the city.” Commenting on the move, Mark Haywood, Partner and Head of the North at CMS, said: “We are delighted to reaffirm our commitment to Sheffield – and the North of England generally – in the most tangible way possible, by taking a new home for our people in the City for the next 20 years, with space to grow. CMS has grown by more than 20% in the North of England over the last 18 months as we consciously embrace the opportunities this vibrant region offers, with significant partner hires made in each of our real estate, pensions and commercial litigation sectors, with additional corporate, banking and construction capacity added across the board. These are exciting times for our Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield teams.”

POINT KEEPS US IN PLAY-OFF HUNT Rotherham United boss Paul Warne says he is pleased that the hard-fought point at Southend United keeps his team in the Play-off hunt whilst praising the character of the patched up side that was fielded on Saturday afternoon

in Essex. With illness and injuries rife in the Millers’ camp and midfielder Matt Crooks missing through suspension, many of Warne’s tactical decisions were made for him ahead of the trip to Roots Hall, where

his team battled back from behind to earn a precious point in Sky Bet League One. Speaking following the draw at Southend, Warne admitted the conditions made it difficult for both sides but praised the Millers for their desire to get back into the game. “We knew that it was going to be a difficult game. It was windy, bobbly and we’re carrying some illness and injuries,” he explained. “With the way we played today, we had to play with a narrow four in midfield and they’ve probably only

MATT CROOKS UP FOR GOAL OF THE MONTH Millers midfielder Matt Crooks has been nominated for the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month award for November, with his first goal against Gillingham making the shortlist of strikes. It was an afternoon to remember for Rotherham as they ran out as comfortable 3-0 victors at Priestfield Stadium, but Crooks stole the headlines with a brace that included an

the second half,” he added. “We set our stall out to come out and get the three points, if we don’t make those two mistakes then we come away with the win ourselves, we had a great first 45 minutes, we didn’t want the complacency to creep in, but we’ve lost our concentration. “We’re bitterly disappointed with the two goals that we’ve given away, that’s what’s seen them win the game, they weren’t earnt by them and by us not capitalising on the chances we’ve had, and not seeing the game out, and it’s handed them the win.”

I thought we really took the game to them then and normally, I like to make my three subs but nobody was playing particularly badly. I threw Carlton on for Smudge at the end thinking he has some real power in the box and he might have got us a goal.” After Rob Kiernan had turned the ball into his own goal to give Warne’s men the advantage, a Jason Demetriou penalty restored parity before a quickfire second followed from Sam Mantom to edge the hosts ahead. However, a late

onslaught from the Millers saw Freddie Ladapo notch his 11th goal of the season, before the visitors continued to apply pressure to Nathan Bishop’s goal but to no avail. “We got a goal back and in the end, Freddie could have had a couple, which he created himself.,” Warne continued. “I thought he was a real nuisance all day, as was Chieo. I thought Jake grew into the game and he was a real threat. In fairness to Wilesy and Dan in the middle they were playing

against three. “Overall, I thought a draw might have pleased them more than me. We were trying to get the win but to come away from home to places like this and get a point to keep us in the Play-off mix is good. “I hope the fans aren’t disappointed. We watched them [Southend] play Bristol Rovers and for the first 45 minutes they battered them. They were 2-0 up and it could have been five. In the end, Bristol Rovers got a goal at home and got the fans behind them.

We didn’t have that luxury today away from home and the lads’ character helped us get back in the game and we should have won it. “If you asked me before the game, would I have taken a point the answer would be not really. I came here for three, but at 2-1 down better teams than us would collapse but we didn’t. “Win lose or draw, we go in Monday, try and right what is wrong so to speak and try and prepare them for a few home games.”

THERE’S NO BETTER FEELING After Wednesday showed ruthless efficiency to dismantle Nottingham Forest in their own backyard, Garry Monk spoke of his delight with the emphatic win. The Owls were in cruise control at half time four goals to the good and Monk hailed hat-trick hero Jordan Rhodes in particular. He said: “I’m delighted for everyone today and for Jordan himself, who took his

goals very well. “I told him his chance would come and he has taken that chance today. Everyone in the dressing room is delighted for him. “You look at that performance all round and you can see what we are capable of and I couldn’t be more pleased for the players. “It was fantastic for the fans as well, that’s another sell-out following and there’s no better feeling than going over to them

at the end with three points.” Monk added: “It’s been a really positive week for us with seven points and it could have been nine. “We’ve played three good, dangerous sides and come out with two wins and a draw. “The effort and commitment of the players is first class, they cannot be faulted and today they got exactly what they deserved.”

an emphatic 4-0 win against Nottingham Forest. The 24-year-old made his SWFC debut from the bench in October 2016 in a clash against Brighton at Hillsborough. His full debut came in the same month as the Owls overcame QPR on home soil and posted a clean sheet in the process. Dawson has made 11 appearances so far this season.

Cameron Dawson posted his 50th appearance for Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. The Wednesday youth product marked the milestone at the City Ground by keeping a clean sheet as the Owls romped to

Owls duo Dominic Iorfa and Jordan Rhodes have been named in the EFL Team of the Week. The Wednesday pair have been recognised following the impressive 4-0 victory over Nottingham Forest away from home on Saturday. For Rhodes, his first goal of the campaign arrived just nine minutes into the contest with a fine leftfooted finish into the bottom corner. Goals number two and three soon followed as Rhodes bagged a first half hat-trick to effectively seal the points inside 37 minutes for the visitors. The treble saw Rhodes become only the fourth player in the club’s history to score a first half away league hat-trick. At the other end, Wednesday were solid at the back and restricted the hosts to very little in front of goal.

Jordan Rhodes was the hat-trick hero on Saturday at the City Ground on an afternoon where the striker was unstoppable. The prolific forward achieved a feat only matched three times before in the club’s entire history by scoring a first half away league hat-trick. The joy for Rhodes and his team mates was plain for all to see but the journey leading up to that point has not been straightforward for the 29-year-old. But a strong mentality, hard work on the training pitch and a determination to reach the heights the striker is best known for has been the key for Rhodes. “I’ve been trying to work as hard as I can on the training field and improve myself behind the scenes, as a player and as a person,” he said. “Sometimes as a striker you get those kind of games where everything goes for you and other times they don’t. “But that’s why you keep going, it’s why you play football. “You keep going for those little rewards at the end like on Saturday, it was great to come to a difficult place and get three points and now our attention turns to a busy Christmas period and see how we get on.” Rhodes has made nine appearances for the Owls this season and had to wait until last weekend for his first goal to arrive. But once it did, there was no holding back as Rhodes devastated Forest with a 37-minute treble to kill the game before the break. “You try and keep your head down and work as hard as you can and each day is a chance to impress. “With that mentality in mind, I’ve tried keep my head down and stay as positive as possible. “It’s not always easy when you’re not playing football but days like that when you get that reward and coming on last Saturday at Hillsborough was also a real boost and I’ve really enjoyed this last week. “Let’s see what Bristol City brings now.”

FLECK DOUBLE DEFEATS VILLA BLADES LAUNCH John Fleck’s second-half double saw United return to winning ways at Bramall Lane. The Scottish midfielder bagged a well-taken brace, as the Blades produced an excellent secondhalf showing to net another deserved maximum, with Aston Villa put to the sword. For the clash against Villa, boss Wilder named an unchanged starting XI following the victory at Norwich City, although there was one change amongst the substitutes with Osborn replacing Robinson, who missed out through illness. After a quiet opening five minutes, it was United on the attack, with Stevens and O’Connell advancing menacingly, but their crosses into the box were cleared by Hause. Norwood was booked shortly afterwards following three fouls in quick succession, although Grealish and then McGinn on two occasions made the most of it. Heaton flapped at a Stevens cross, before claiming at the second attempt, before Fleck was cautioned for a soft foul on Guilbert, before the same

player was down holding his face after being held off the ball by the stronger Egan. As half-time approached, goalscoring opportunities remained very much at a premium, although it was the Blades enjoying more possession and territory. Then United had claims for a penalty rebuffed, despite a VAR check, after the ball could have caught the arm of Hause as he blocked Fleck’s shot. Two minutes of added time were signaled, but they passed with incident as the teams went in all square at the break. The Blades were quickly out of the blocks in the second period, but McGoldrick failed to make contact at the near post, from Norwood’s inviting low cross. But on 50 minutes, United deservedly took the lead as FLECK timed his run to perfection and fired home from Lundstram’s cross, although it was Basham’s backheel that created the opportunity. In response, Villa broke quickly and registered their first attempt at goal, but Wesley’s shot was into the side-netting

from El Ghazi’s cross. Moments later, Grealish pealed away at the back post and got climbed above Baldock, but thankfully his header went wide of Henderson’s post. Just after the hour, United made a change, with McBurnie replacing Mousset. Hause was booked for a high tackle on McGoldrick and from the resulting free-kick, his header was cleared by Engels with Egan ready to pounce. At the other end, O’Connell was ideally place to clear the danger from Grealish after a fortunate bounce for the visitors, before Targett was carded for a nasty lunge on Norwood. With 17 minutes remaining, the Blades struck a timely second and what a goal it was too. FLECK started and finished it, this time with his right foot, with Baldock and then McGoldrick heavily involved in the build-up, with the latter claiming the assist with a delightful touch over the defender. On 76 minutes, VAR reviewed a potential penalty for handball against Egan, the check went in Villa’s favour, but from the spot Grealish

rattled the bar and despite another stoppage for possible encroachment, referee Bankes waved play on, to the delight of the home faithful. Bešić took the place of Norwood as the clocked ticked down. Still United poured forward, but McGoldrick fired wide from a low cross by Stevens, before being replaced by Osborn. Five minutes of added time were indicated and they passed with alarm as United recorded backto-back victories in the top-flight. Blades: Henderson, Baldock, Stevens, Fleck, O’Connell, Basham, Lundstram, Egan, Norwood (Bešić 86), McGoldrick (Osborn 90) Mousset (McBurnie 61). Unused: L. Freeman, Sharp, Jagielka, Osborn, Moore. Villa: Heaton, Guilbert, Engels, Hause, Targett, Lansbury (Luiz 66), Nakamba, McGinn, El Ghazi, Wesley (Kodija 69), Grealish. Unused: Nyland, Elmohamady, Konsa, Taylor, Trezeguet.

DECEMBER

RIP JIM SMITH All at Sheffield United are saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Smith. Sheffield-born Jim was a player on the books at the Lane, but never made a first team appearance. He became a part time player in January 1959 before leaving to join Aldershot, going in to make a total of 250 appearances for several clubs. His career as a manager saw him take charge of Colchester United, Birmingham City, Oxford, QPR, Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Derby County. He famously had a framed picture of Bramall Lane on his office wall and was good friends with the late, great Alan Hodgkinson. The thoughts of all at Bramall Lane are with Jim’s family at this sad time.
