FESTIVE TAXI FARES EXPLAINED Taxis may charge more during the festive season but the regulations are not the same for all types of taxi. Sheffield City Council has set out the regulations around taxi fares during the festive period and how this works differently for private hire vehicles and Hackney Carriages (black cabs). The two types of licensed vehicle have different regulations to adhere to.

During the festive period over Christmas and New Year many private hire fares increase, this is a decision for the private hire firm and the council have no control over this. Private Hire Vehicles must by law, be pre booked, and are only insured for pre bookings. Any increases in private hire fares do not apply to Hackney Carriages (black Cabs), whose fares are set by Law. Hackneys

must engage their meter and can only charge the metered fare. It is an offence for a Hackney driver to charge anything other than the metered fare, or to fail to engage the meter. The fares for Hackney carriages are set by law, and while a small increase of £2 around Christmas is added, this is for set periods only, this increase is automatically added onto the meter and cannot be adjusted by the driver.

The Hackney carriage increase is applied from 6pm on 24 December – 6am on 27 December, and 6pm on 31 December – 6am on 2 January this should be detailed on a fares table which must be displayed inside a Hackney carriage. If a private hire taxi is ordered and the job is accepted by a Hackney carriage, the driver must still adhere to Hackney fare regulations and charge only the

metered fare. Members of the public can report issues relating to taxi fares directly to the Licensing Service on 0114 2734264, or to taxilicensing@ sheffield.gov.uk. To make sure the matter can be investigated the licensing service will ask for the registration of the vehicle, plate number of the vehicle (displayed on the rear of the vehicle) and also the driver licence number if known.

COUNCILLORS TO CONSIDER PLANS TO IMPROVE LOOK AND FEEL OF TOWN CENTRE Councillors to consider plans to improve look and feel of town centre. Major improvements to the appearance, layout and safety of Rotherham Town Centre are set to get the go ahead by Rotherham Council’s Cabinet at its meeting on 23 December. Phase one of the public realm improvement

scheme – part of the Rotherham Town Centre Masterplan – will see a wide range of improvements to College Street, Bridgegate, Howard Street (Frederick St to Market Sq) and Effingham Street (All Saint’s Sq to Market Sq). The scheme will be funded from the Council’s £17 million Town Centre

Investment Fund (TCIF) set up to deliver the Masterplan and could also include contributions from Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) and Transforming Cities Fund, if bids are successful. The proposals include: • New short stay parking spaces along College Street to improve access to

the heart of the Town Centre • Removal of planter beds and seating on Bridgegate, to help tackle anti-social behaviour and open up views of the Minster • Upgraded lighting to improve safety • Improved stall layout on Effingham Street to create more space for traders and more capacity for

other street markets • Infrastructure work to provide new power supplies for market stalls and events • Replacement street furniture, such as litter bins, signage and bollards • New user-friendly seating, in line with Standing Up for Sitting Down campaign standards Councillor Denise Lelliott, Cabinet

Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, said: “We’re determined to see Rotherham Town Centre thrive, not just survive. The public realm improvements are part of our wider Town Centre masterplan which will see significant investment in our town centre over the next few years, in addition to recent regeneration,

including the £12 million interchange upgrade and £10.5 million University Centre Rotherham. “The public realm improvements will ensure the huge boost that the Forge Island project will bring to Rotherham will be felt across the whole town centre through improved connectivity. This will also complement the

redevelopment of the markets complex and three new town centre housing developments on derelict brownfield sites.” Subject to Cabinet approval, a contractor to deliver the project will be appointed early in the new year with work on the improvements set to start in April and be completed by next October.

Have you all heard about the monk who claimed to see the face of jesus in a tub of margarine? He said: “I can’t believe it’s not Buddha.” How much does Santa pay to park his sleigh? Nothing. It’s on the house. Just lost my job as a zookeeper. In my defence there were signs everywhere saying “please don’t feed the animals.” I am giving up drinking for a month. Sorry that came out wrong. I am giving up. Drinking for a month. I think my calendar is trying to kill me. My days are numbered. The other day, my friend told me I was delusional. I nearly fell off my unicorn. Kell Brook will make his eagerly-anticipated return to the ring against Mark DeLuca at the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield on Saturday February 8th on a bumper bill featuring Kid Galahad taking on Claudio Marrero in a Final Eliminator for the IBF Featherweight crown, Terri Harper clashing with Eva Wahlstrom for the WBC Super-Featherweight World Title and the return of Heavyweight favourite Dave Allen, shown live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US. Former IBF Welterweight ruler Brook (38-2, 26 KOs) was last seen outpointing Australia’s Michael Zerafa over a year ago in his hometown and ‘The Special One’, now trained by Dominic Ingle, will be aiming to shake off the ring rust and fire his name back into the mix for a Word Title shot in 2020. Standing in his way is the USA’s DeLuca (24-1, 13 KOs), a southpaw hailing from Whitman in Massachusetts nicknamed ‘The Bazooka’ who is currently enjoying a three-fight winning streak, picking up the NABA Super-Welterweight title on the undercard of Andrade vs. Kautondokwa in October 2018. “I’m so happy to be back and I can’t wait to put on a performance for my city on February 8 live on Sky Sports and DAZN,” said Brook. “I’ve had a year out, there has been some dark times but what I’ve realised is I love this sport and I know I have some of my biggest years left in the game. DeLuca is a strong, gutsy fighter who is always ready for war but I’m planning on putting on a statement and showing the world that I’m still a force at 154 or 147lbs.” Galahad (26-1, 15 KOs) fell short in a close and controversial battle with IBF Featherweight kingpin Josh Warrington at the First Direct Arena in Leeds earlier this year but the Sheffield contender has earned a golden opportunity to land another shot at the 126lbs World Title when he meets ‘The Matrix’. Marrero (24-3, 17 KOs) captured the interim WBA Featherweight World Title with a one round demolition of Carlos Zambrano in 2017 and the 30-year-old from the Dominican Republic is determined to shatter

Galahad’s dreams and set up another attempt at gold for himself. “Every opponent at this level has to be respected and that’s what I’ll do,” said Galahad. “He’s a game kid in a life changing fight, similar to me. So it will be a tough night but I’ll prepare fully. “I am grateful to the IBF, Matchroom and my team for making sure they made a sensible decision to get me back into the final eliminator - something I think is deserved and most of the fans do too. I’ve had many people believe I won the first fight with Warrington but what’s written in the record books is what counts. I’ll focus fully on Marrero now and then if and when we get through that - I’ll look to right the wrongs of the first fight. Let’s hope Josh sticks around to take the rematch as many of his own fans and neutrals came out saying he didn’t do enough to have his arm raised the first night.” Harper (9-0, 5 KOs) got off to a flying start under the Matchroom Boxing banner with a polished performance to outpoint tough Brazilian Viviane Obenauf in the first defence of her IBO Super-Featherweight World Title on her 23rd birthday in November. That win set up a shot at the famous green and gold WBC Super-Featherweight World Title owned by Finland’s Wahlstrom (23-1-2, 3 KOs), a veteran of women’s boxing who will be making the sixth defence of her title against rising star Harper. “I’m really looking forward to be fighting back in Sheffield, this time as a Matchroom fighter and fighting for one of the most prestigious World Title belts in my opinion,” said Harper. I know that there’s boxers out there who would give anything for this opportunity that I’ve been given, so we’re leaving no stone left unturned. Being local and having the home crowd behind me on the night, the atmosphere is going to be electric - I know this is going to push me on to win the belt not only for me but for every single supporter.” “It’s great to be back boxing and even better it’s at the FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield,” said Allen. “It’s an honour to be boxing alongside some of my friends and to see Kell Brook return to action. I’m coming back to win the British Title and that’s my aim for 2020, this is the start of that journey.” Tickets for Saturday 8th February 2020 are priced £46.95, £69.45, & £114.45 (including fees) are now on general sale online from www.flydsaarena.co.uk or through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56.

GUY MARTIN’S SUZUKI, WORKSHOP WISDOM AND GYMKHANA GURUS GUARANTEE A SPECTACULAR NEWARK CLASSIC BIKE SHOW As the ever-growing Newark Classic Bike Show enters its ninth year running on January 11-12, loyal bike enthusiasts can expect both brand-new features and familiar favourites to keep them entertained. Show organiser Mortons Media Group has been inundated with applications to display privately owned classic motorcycles at Newark Showground, including Guy Martin’s 1500cc Suzuki, complete with turbo engine. The bike was ridden by Guy in the ‘Race to 300mph in a standing mile’ challenge, organised by the UK Timing Association – an arm of Straightliners Events. No one has yet managed to reach 300mph in the mile – although Guy is currently second in the running at an impressive 270.065mph! The team are hoping that Guy will attend the show on Sunday to promote the upcoming 2020 rounds for the challenge, but his attendance is not yet guaranteed. Applications for bike and scooter displays have been at an alltime high, and fans can expect additional display areas across the site, giving the show the biggestever number of bikes on show. A brand-new ‘Workshop Wisdom’ feature from Classic Bike Guide magazine will make its debut for the 2020 show. The team will be on hand to share stories, give advice and help visitors on their motorcycle restoration journey with some priceless tips on how to get the job done for less. Between them, the team hold expert knowledge on anything from 1930s British bikes to 1980s Japanese machines, and are self-titled ‘masters’ of getting

bikes to work using whatever is at hand! Enthusiasts will be able to get up close and personal to two machines currently undergoing restoration work – a Norton ES2 scrambler and a JAP/Ariel. Fans can find the stand in the Lady Eastwood Hall, where they can ask any questions at 10.30am and 2pm on Saturday, and 10.30am on Sunday. January 2019’s event saw Moto Gymkhana UK pitch up for the first time and organisers are pleased to announce that the ‘grassroots motorcycle sport for everyone’ will be back for 2020. All visitors are encouraged have a go for themselves and to book in advance of the event due to last year’s popularity. As long as participants bring their own riding gear and their licence, anyone is welcome to put their skills to the test – and it’s all included in the ticket price! There will be three slots available on both Saturday and Sunday

across eight sessions per day. Although the bikes and scooters available to ride are still waiting to be confirmed, there will be at least two Royal Enfield machines within the circuit for visitors to take part on. Star guest Frankie Chili will be at the show all weekend, interviewed on stage by Lincolnshire racing gem, Steve Plater. The show will feature many of its regular attractions, including a vast number of trade and autojumble pitches, club stands and hundreds of classic bikes on display. For more information on trading or exhibiting at the event, please see the show website or call 01507 529430. Advance tickets are on sale now at £10 each, offering a saving of £2 on the gate price. is your water winter ready? Yorkshire Water is urging customers to be winter ready, especially those taking part in the big Christmas getaway. The company wants customers to be prepared for the worst with cold conditions potentially freezing pipes and cutting off a home’s water supply. Pipes, taps, cisterns, tanks, and water meters in unheated areas are all at risk of bursting under freezing temperatures, causing mayhem both in the home and outside, where repairs may need to be made. It is especially important for customers leaving home for a few days this Christmas and Yorkshire Water is recommending they keep homes warm, setting central heating on a low heat or a 24-hour constant setting. If going away on holiday tell a neighbour or friend so that they can check to make sure there have been no burst pipes. Yorkshire Water also recommends customers follow these other simple steps to keep their homes winter ready: • Protect all exposed pipe work, cisterns, tanks, taps and water meters in unheated areas with waterproof foam lagging or insulation • Know where the stop tap is located at the property in case it needs to be turned off in an emergency. The main stop tap is

usually found at the point where the pipe work enters the premises, often it is under the kitchen sink • Make sure you keep a plumber’s number handy in case of an emergency. Neil Dewis, Director of Water Service Delivery at Yorkshire Water, said: “It’s incredibly important to make sure your home is winter ready – the impact of frozen and burst pipes can be disastrous. In addition to the free Winter Ready packs available to every Yorkshire Water customer, we offer a Priority Services Register for customers with additional needs to ensure everyone is well lookedafter year-round, not just during the winter months.” A free Yorkshire Water Winter Ready pack can be ordered from yorkshirewater.com/winterready/ while information about the Priority Services Register is here yorkshirewater.com/priority-services.

Charity search for community heart heroes A national charity is on the hunt for local heroes. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is launching their Heart Hero Awards 2020 and asking for people to nominate their heart hero. The awards recognise the different ways people are helping beat heartbreak from heart and circulatory disease. This could be through fundraising, volunteering or helping patients and their families. This year there are three categories: Healthcare Hero, Young Heart Hero and the Inspiration Award. The Healthcare Hero award will recognise a doctor, nurse, or person working in a healthcare setting who has made a special effort to make a difference to the life of a heart patient or their family. The Young Heart Hero award will go to an exceptional person under the age of 18 years who has done something amazing for the BHF and is a source of inspiration to others. The Inspiration award will recognise a person who inspires others through their determination and dedication. Whether that is through their fundraising efforts, taking part in a physical challenge, organising an event, or volunteering activities. Nominations are open until Saturday 29 February. The winners will be announced at a very special gala awards dinner that will take place in London in September 2020. To nominate, please visit https://www.bhf. org.uk/what-we-do/in-your-area/heart-heroawards/nomination-form

world isn’t shrinking anymore; it’s getting bigger and bigger by the day!” Liz Armstrong, who runs the Millhouses Slimming World group, says: “We know the obesity crisis is a ticking timebomb, and type 2 diabetes is linked to obesity too. We believe the support you get from being in a warm, empowering group environment is key to helping you eat more healthily and becoming more active too. “The changes we’ve seen in Dawn are incredible. I hope her success will inspire other people in Sheffield who’d like to lose weight and improve their health by forming new lifestyle habits and become happier to take action. That’s so important because the latest obesity statistics that show 26% of people in England are obese and 39% overweight. There’s a warm welcome waiting at Slimming World and, just think, if you start today you could feel like a completely new person just like Dawn.” The Millhouses groups meets every Thursday at 5.30 and 7.30pm, and every Friday at 9.30am at Millhouses Methodist Church. To join call Liz on 07971 522349 or pop along. For more information, motivation and recipe ideas visit www.slimmingworld. co.uk.

Wedding Guide WINTER WEDDING TIPS When choosing your wedding shoes, opt for something enclosed; peep toes won’t cut it in the snow! Alternatively, if you’re not brave enough to sport

heels in frosty conditions, there are some beautiful wedding boots on the market which are both practical and elegant. Draping yourself in diamonds will ensure you sparkle

and shine on your big day. Think delicate tiaras and cascading earrings. And don’t forget your bridesmaids. Fur muffs are a fantastic accessory. Not only will

they keep your bridesmaids’ hands warm, they will also work really well with the winter wonderland theme. Whatever you choose, a winter wedding is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with luxurious fabrics such as white velvet and faux fur. Sparkling jewels, silvers and gold really complement this theme too. When organising a winter wedding remember to pick your venue carefully; try not to choose a room with too many windows, as a drafty room will

FLYDSA ARENA REVIEW OF 2019 AND A LOOK FORWARD TO AN EXCITING 2020 2019 was the Arena’s 27th year in showbiz and yet again it was another memorable season both off & on stage! Behind the scenes SIVLive and Ticketmaster UK announced an exclusive long-term ticketing partnership that will see, for the very first time, the introduction of digital ticketing into SIVLive’s venues. Ticketing innovations such as Fan to Fan Ticket Exchange – where if a customer buys a ticket to an event and then finds they then can’t attend, they can sell that ticket to another person via our Ticket Exchange. Then there is the customer Fan Guarantee where customers are offered a 24-hour cooling off period to cancel and refund, or exchange their order

if they change their mind within 24 hours of booking – giving customer confidence when booking tickets through the venue by offering official resale alternatives to the unregulated market place. 2019 was also the year that saw the venue move to cashless payments for parking and food & drink bringing the benefit of quicker service and reduce waiting times. Over the summer the venue underwent a re-brand to reflect the history and heritage of the amazing acts & shows that have graced the Arena stage since the venue opened in 1991. Customers and artistes alike will be able to spot the many bands & shows that have performed at the Arena. 2019 on stage concert highlights saw sell-out shows from some of

the biggest names in entertainment including George Ezra, Take That, Olly Murs, Liam Gallagher, Bryan Adams, Catfish & the Bottlemen, Mumford & Sons, Westlife, Little Mix and American pop superstar Ariana Grande. Back in July Sheffield played host to the first ever national games for British wounded, injured and sick veterans and personnel, with the Invictus Team UK Trials Sheffield. The FlyDSA Arena was honoured to host the BIG GIG to celebrate the opening of the trials, a show produced by Sheffield’s own Eliot Kennedy and saw performances from many a star including Alfie Boe, Suggs & Heather Small. 2019 brought sporting action in abundance to the venue, not least from the Arena’s resident Ice Hockey team the

Sheffield Steelers as well the Ice Hockey Super Series showcasing two of the worlds ice hockey giants, Canada v USA. Adrenalin pumping Arenacross saw the Arena transformed into an indoor dirt track with death defying motorcycle stunts & racing entertain the crowds for two nights. The annual visit from Premier League Darts playing infront of over 6,000 fans for the 13th consecutive year was back in April. Caged Steel brought us a night of incredible combat sports action back in July whilst eight of the country’s strongest men did battle at the Arena with Britain’s Strongest Man back in January. The Arena also hosted a number of family shows in 2019 including WWE Live along with the Arena’s most regular touring show Disney

On Ice plus Marvel Universe LIVE! The inspirational Professor Brian Cox returned to the venue with his fascinating brand new live stage show and Strictly Come Dancing the Live Tour dazzled us once again! Blue Planet II – Live The final show of 2019 is the live version of the David Walliams Grandpa’s Great Escape, whose book has sold over two million copies around the world, will be stopping off in Sheffield for two performances in the venue’s intimate theatre style Steel Hall setting on 29th December – a perfect festive end to 2019. So, into 2020 and first up returning to the venue in the new year are Giants Live with the Britain’s Strongest Man competition for it’s 3rd consecutive year in January. Other sporting

action will see the return of Kell Brook headlining a night of Championship Boxing with a packed local undercard in February; the Sheffield Steelers challenging for league & cup honours infront of 6,500 ice hockey fans every game followed by the world’s leading darts players returning to The FlyDSA Arena for Night 11 of the Premier League Darts, for the fourteenth consecutive year at the venue. Concerts already confirmed and on sale for 2020 include Slipknot, The Script, The Stereophonics, plus first ever appearances at the venue for both Stormzy and Gerry Cinnamon. Harry Styles will make his solo debut at the Arena with Love On Tour in April! Upcoming family shows include WWE Live & the annual favourite

LA PLATA S.C.

review and reflect on the past 12 months, that you suddenly realise just how incredible and how diverse the events, gigs and concerts taking place at the Arena and the rest of the SIVLive portfolio are and have been over the years. I know that we will never please all the people all of the time but it cannot be denied that we give it a really good go and we will never stop aspiring to do so. Our ongoing partnerships with the Sheffield Steelers and the biggest gig promoters go from strength to strength and our new relationship with the largest ticketing company in the world will mean, as we march into this new decade, that this will be the most exciting period in the Arena’s illustrious history.”

7 DAY SOAPWATCH MORNINGSIDE

SOAP STORIES PREVIEW - 2020

Who kills Graham in Emmerdale? The suspects are lined up and someone takes a step too far and puts an end to him in a grim showdown. But with no shortage of enemies, will the real culprit manage to shift the blame? Both Steve and Tracy and Carla and Peter have challenging times ahead for them next year in Coronation Street – as their relationships are tested, will everyone come out of it unscathed? Leo’s vendetta against Whitney will continue to rear its head in EastEnders, with a grim and violent showdown at Tony’s graveside. But will she come out of this okay? With the youngsters set to be lured into the dark world of drugs, Tony’s relatives are at the heart of it all. Moira continues to suffer in the aftermath of what happened in 2019 – and as her world collapses and her reliance on alcohol continues, there is an exit on the horizon for Pete, who has previously teamed up with Nate. But how will he leave Emmerdale? Jade steps up her campaign against Fiz and Tyrone in Coronation Street, leading to the couple losing everything. But with the truth about jade finally emerging, Fiz isn’t giving her kids up without a fight. Linda’s struggles following the events of Christmas and new year push her over the edge and with massive secrets being held all round, there are explosive times ahead in time for a seriously unforgettable 35th anniversary. Coronation Street will also mark notable anniversaries in 2020 and there are already major plans afoot, with Iain MacLeod hinting at breaking the mould and some special episodes . As Daniel continues to deal with his grief in Coronation Street, his complicated relationship with Bethany comes to the fore again but as the mixed feelings cause heartache, it’s time to say goodbye to Bethany. One Emmerdale resident is already facing a tough start to the new year after everything they have been through – but will yet more bad news push them over the edge? Just how much more can they lose? One EastEnders family finds themselves at a crossroads – and when another significant event unfolds, it will either pull them back together or rip them apart even further.

As I write this, it’s approaching Christmas, and it appears that each of the mainstream angling companies have bought out a range of ‘carpy’ clothing with the associated ‘carpy’ price tag; i.e. with £100 added on. It’s ridiculous isn’t it? Just because it’s green (or camo) with a natty logo on, the price automatically increases and those loyal to the brand must pay it. I’m sick of being ripped off and having spent eight years in HM Forces, I like to think I know a thing about cold weather clothing so I won’t pay it, I’d rather get value for money rather than perceived ‘carpiness’. I mentioned it to a friend recently (in truth, I’d also seen a few mentions of the company in Talking Carp already) and he sent me a link to a relatively new UK brand, GrizzlymanUK, and suggested I take a look at the clothing range on offer as I was in the market for a new winter suit. My old salopettes had begun to fall apart after seven years and my jacket, a US import, had served me well, but was starting to fail; it was definitely time for something new! It’s difficult to review clothing. I could dress it up (geddit?) as an all singing, all dancing item of bankside fashion which would instantly make you more attractive to the fairer sex, something which sported a funky logo and would make you the envy of all your mates, (a logo makes ALL the difference) or I could just be honest and tell you that the Gorka7 suit appears to be bombproof, waterproof, windproof and practical…which it is. I selected the Gorka7 as it seemed to best provide for my winter fishing, so got in touch with the company to find out more. My sizes were requested, and a couple of days later, my suit was delivered first class. I’m always dubious whenever I order off the internet, especially if I haven’t ‘tyre kicked’ the item first, but the two piece suit fitted perfectly and felt comfortable. Of course, I hadn’t got any thermals or layers beneath it when I stood before the mirror, but I could tell it was roomy enough for any additional winter clobber beneath and couldn’t wait to get out and try it in the great outdoors. My first outing was up onto the moors high above my Staffordshire base. I live near the highest village in the UK, and have worked as a firefighter in winds of almost ninety miles an hour during winter as we’d sought to recover blown over vehicles and dealt with accidents caused by freezing weather, so knew that in December, it would be suitably uncomfortable ‘on the tops’. The Gorka7 features layered cotton material and as I climbed the gritstone outcrops of The Roaches, I noted that I wasn’t drenched in sweat as the breathable membrane did it’s stuff, nor could I feel the wind which blasted across the moorland as the thermal barrier kept out the cold. The padded leggings are supplied with a detachable pair of braces which I chose not to use, but they didn’t slip down due to being securely belted through extra wide loops, and they didn’t ride up over my boots either as the integral stirrups held them down. The leggings also feature reinforced pads at the knees, ‘dusters’ to cover the elasticated ankle, and a zip fastening backed by double buttons at the fly. Like the jacket, they have both a breathable and thermal layer to protect from the cold. It’s worth noting that the buttons are huge on the Gorka7, specifically designed to be easy to use with cold, wet hands or gloves… The jacket has reinforced shoulder pads to ease the pressure when carrying a rucksack or even holding a weapon to the shoulder, there is no zip to fail, instead the jacket is fastened with the same securely stitched extra big buttons, which are covered within a wind flap, the bonnet style hood is adjustable, as is the waist cord to keep the jacket snug about the wearer. are six external pockets and another hidden inside, and elasticated cuffs prevent water egress too. It’s not green though, instead the suit is finished in a sandstone/ grey outer layer which looks good and is comprised of ‘silent’ material, so the suit appeals not just to the angler, but to the shooter, hunter or stalker too! After a couple of hours on the moors, the weather hadn’t bothered me at all, unlike others who struggled past holding scarves to their face and pulling wet clothing off as they approached their waiting cars. I’d sat watching the world go by from atop the rocky bluffs, fully exposed to the biting winds, and hadn’t felt any of it, so it was time for something else. I went home and grabbed my Air Arms 410 and sloped off into some nearby woodland to see if the drippy moisture of the trees could penetrate the suit as I looked for some pigeons. By now, it was heading towards the cooler hours of the evening, the wind had dropped, but the rain still splattered down from the tops of the fleshy leaved rhododendrons and as I sat patiently on a log waiting for a target, I still felt warm and comfortable, and had plenty of room within the suit to bring up my rifle quickly should a target be spotted. So far, so good… The real test though is what I bought it for, winter fishing. Sitting for long periods, often in rain or snow with a windchill factor to consider, the suit has to be good to combat UK weather. Fortunately, the Gorka7 is a derivative of Finnish Army issue clothing, constructed in Belarus and designed for wintery Eastern European conditions. Although the suit is rated down to -5 degrees, the reality is that windchill often takes temperatures below this, even in the UK, so it has to perform. I used it first at Rudyard Lake, a 166 acre reservoir where the wind howls across the surface on it’s way up the valley and wore it as I lure fished from a floating jetty, some way from the bank and fully exposed to the weather. It rained hard too, and as I stood for hours in the deluge, the only time I felt the rain was when I turned to face into the onslaught and cover a different area with my lure. Even then, it was only my exposed face that got wet… Other anglers however, retired soaked… After a few hours in the rain, my next venture was to yet another reservoir, high up on the moors in search of pike. Before dawn, the temperature was sub-zero, and at the venue it was even lower as I drilled my banksticks into the frozen ground and set up my stall for a day on the bank. I spent eight hours in my chair, drinking tea and eating beans, but all day, I was snug and dry as the clouds closed in and the rain came down again, the suit protecting me from the very worst of the December conditions. As far as I’m concerned, the suit lives up to it’s promises, it’s well made, warm, weatherproof and ideal for winter angling. I can’t find fault with it, and if you know me, you’ll know I usually fish twice a week whatever the weather, so I need something that will do the job. The only thing I think I’ve not mentioned so far is the cost of the Gorka7. For something of such quality, I’d normally expect to pay anything between £200-£350, but one of the best things about this sit is that is currently retails at just £95 for the whole thing! Can you afford to be cold this winter? No, you can’t. Get the suit, get out and go fishing! Find more details about the Gorka7 and a whole range of purposely designed ‘carp tax’ free outdoor goods at www.grizzlyman.uk You won’t be disappointed!

WARNE PLEASED AS DEPLETED MILLERS BATTLE FOR POINT Rotherham United boss Paul Warne credited his side’s second half performance as his depleted squad battled back to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Fleetwood Town. The Millers boss was presented with a host of pre-match injury and illness

issues across the pitch, but particularly in defensive areas, where he was forced to deploy midfielderby-trade Matt Crooks. Even Crooks, who turned in an admirable performance in the heart of the Millers back line, wasn’t at the peak of health, having been isolated

from his teammates due to a sickness problem, leaving Warne full of praise for his makeshift Millers as they added a point to their Sky Bet League One tally. “We were very low on numbers today. We’ve got illness in the camp, big time. We played a back three because we only had one centre half fit,” Warne explained after the game. “Crooksy had to play centre half for us so we played a 3-4-1-2 because we thought that would help him out. “It was a tough day really. Wilesy hasn’t trained all week, he’s

strapped up and we’ve only got two centre midfielders available. Wilesy being 50% of that. “We were really down on our numbers. As bad as we were first half - and I thought we looked really edgy. You can feel it in the place, they score a goal where in fairness we’ve moved out quite well, Crooksy has slipped and it is a great header from the lad. “It was a really edgy first half and then we made the change at half time, asked them to be a bit more positive and if you’re going to lose a game, at least lose while

having a right go. “I think they did have a right go second half and I thought when we equalised we might go on and win it. Then we gave away a poor goal to say the least. “When we got back to 2-2, they made changes to play five at the back and were quite happy with a point. “All in all, I’m really pleased with the character they showed second half and if we can play like that from the start, we’ll probably be better.

“We found on yesterday that he’d [Crooks] played centre half for Huddersfield in a pre-season under Mark Robins. We were quite a small side so we needed Crooksy to play there. We literally did 20 minutes of shape yesterday because Icky damaged his back, Robbo has been ill all week and hasn’t trained one minute. “Woody has been out for six weeks so it was literally Crooksy or Smudge and I just think that Crooksy

is a bit more mobile. At 1-0 at half time, if you’d offered me a point, I’d have taken it. “I’m really pleased with some performance but some more than others. “I said to them at halftime that it wasn’t good enough. You can have a bad day at the office and your passes can go astray and all that but it is difficult at home, you need to start well. We’ve been on about it all week and we didn’t. We just didn’t win the first and the second balls

which was my issue. “You can have a bad day on the ball but you shouldn’t have a bad day off it. I asked them to go out and give the fans something that they want to see. They want to see crosses and shots and they want to see attacking play. “It literally was a square pegs, round holes situation. So to come away with a point against a really good Fleetwood team leaves me reasonably pleased.”

ahead before Stanley’s late leveller at the Keepmoat Stadium, and Moore is sure that his tight-knit squad can come together and secure some vital points over this festive period. “There’s so much spirit, so much

togetherness, and you’ve seen that when we scored the goal here, we have to keep that going, keep on working hard and doing what we’ve been doing as we head into this busy Christmas period,” he added. “My mentality is to be

in the game with the players, I kick every ball with them, every moment I live with them, I see the game as it is, we want to stick together, keep the focus, keep doing what we’re doing and keeping the focus. “We’re doing the hard

bit which is creating the chances, we keep getting in those areas, now we have to move on to this Peterborough game, we have to work for our moment, to try and build some momentum and that’s my message to the players.”

ANDERSON: PERFORMANCE DESERVED MORE - ROVERS Tom Anderson felt Rovers did enough to win the game against Accrington Stanley in Sky Bet League One. Rovers looked to be heading for three points after Jon Taylor’s opener, before Offrande Zanzala secured a point for Stanley eight minutes from time. He said: “I think we

got in good areas and probably did enough to win the game, and we feel their goal may have been offside so we’re a little bit hard done to. “It was a scrappy game and you have to give Accrington credit for that, it’s what they’re good at but I felt we matched them. “We actually dealt

with a lot of the balls into the box quite well but unfortunately we switched off for their goal and it cost us.” Anderson made his return to the starting line-up after serving a three match suspension, and says it was good to be back. He added: “It was my own fault for getting

sent off, it seems like the suspension has gone on for a while so it was good to be back out there. “Hopefully now I can get a good run in the team and that will be combined with a few positive results for the team.”

MOORE BACKS ROVERS TO TURN CORNER

were pegged back late on against Accrington Stanley in Sky Bet League One. The visitors levelled eight minutes before the end of 90 minutes on Saturday after Offrande Zanzala got on the end of a late corner, and Moore is certain his side can get over the hurdles that have come their way recently. “You’re always disappointed to

concede one from a setpiece, especially when it could’ve otherwise been ruled out, but we have to take it on the chin and we move on quickly, I said to the players that while we haven’t won, at least we haven’t lost it either,” he said. “We have to keep harping on with those messages, this is a young squad that will learn from what they go through in a game,

we have to keep going and we can’t cry over spilt milk, we have to maintain and keep the focus. “The only way you can change your own fortune is to keep going, keep believing and keep sticking together, we’re going to keep getting over those difficult hurdles that keep going in front of us, and that’s testament to the players.” Jon Taylor put Rovers

WE DESERVED THE POINTS After watching his side climb to third in the table, Garry Monk said the Owls were good value for their 1-0 over Bristol City on Sunday. Wednesday dominated proceedings at Hillsborough but had to wait until the 85th minute for the winning goal, which Barry Bannan delivered from the penalty spot. And Monk said: “We found a way to win today and credit to the players, they have given everything again and they got

what they deserved. “The games can’t all be like last week and this was another game and a different kind of game. “We pressed as the match went on and got the penalty and the win. “Bristol City are a good side, they would have gone above us in the table had they won so this was a tough challenge. “We’ve come through that challenge and it’s three more points on the board, which is the most important thing.”

The Owls boss issued an update on the absent Steven Fletcher, who was sidelined through illness on Sunday. Monk, though, hopes to have his top scorer back in the ranks for the Boxing Day trip to Stoke. He added: “Fletch has a bug, he has been laid up for a couple of days so we had to keep him away from the training ground. “All being well he’ll be back in time for Stoke.”

HUTCHINSON RECEIVES RADIO SHEFFIELD AWARD Sam Hutchinson has received a Toby Award from BBC Radio Sheffield to acknowledge the impact of his ‘Time to Talk’ show earlier this year. Back in February, the midfielder joined presenter Adam Oxley on a Football Heaven special to speak openly about mental health during the live one-hour show. Sam spoke on his own experiences with mental health issues, as well as taking calls from listeners to give advice and take in their stories. The day after Sam’s

appearance, Radio Sheffield received several calls to praise the Owls star for his candid interview. On Thursday, he was invited back to join Toby Foster on the station’s breakfast show to pick up an award for his ‘Time to Talk’ special. The midfielder spoke once again about his experiences in front of the live studio audience, from whom he received a warm reception. Sam’s openness on mental health comes at an appropriate time, with the EFL’s charity partner

being Mind, aiming to target football supporters and encourage them to seek support when needed. Mind provide advice

and support for anyone suffering with mental health problems, which will affect one in four of us through our lives.

BLADES MOVE IN TO FIFTH United made it three wins on the spin, and stayed unbeaten on the road in the Premier League, after a 1-0 success at Brighton and Hove Albion. Oli McBurnie’s welltaken first-half strike, his third of the season, was enough to send the Blades supporters home for Christmas in high spirits, and it could have been more as United had two goals disallowed by VAR. Boss Chris Wilder made two changes to the side which beat Aston Villa last time out. With John Fleck serving a suspension he was replaced in the side by Luke Freeman, whilst McBurnie, impressive in training, was recalled with Lys Mousset on the bench. Callum Robinson also returned to the bench after illness, whilst Michael Verrips replaced Simon Moore who had tweaked a groin. Wilder’s side looked to have made an early breakthrough on a first visit to the Amex when Luke Freeman’s corner was missed by Brighton ‘keeper Mat Ryan, allowing John Egan to bundle the ball into the unguarded net. Following a VAR check the goal was chalked off after

it was adjudged to have gone in off the Irishman’s hand. On 16 minutes United worked another opening. John Lundstram pinched the ball just outside the Albion area, he played a one-two with George Baldock, but rattled an effort into the side netting. Brighton threatened when Aaron Mooy’s effort was saved by Dean Henderson. Martin Montoya picked up the loose ball and squared for Neal Maupay to net, but the flag was rightly raised for offside. The Blades continued to carry a threat and opened the scoring on 23 minutes. Henderson’s booming clearance caused panic in the Brighton defence, and after a poor header by Adam Webster, McBURNIE sprinted clear to coolly slot beyond Ryan under pressure. Shortly after a perfectly weighted David McGoldrick pass almost had Lundstram through but he couldn’t get his shot away under pressure. The Blades were creating the better openings and were dominating the half, but Maupay still carried a threat as he glanced a header well wide from a rightwing cross.

At the other end Jack O’Connell planted a header from Ollie Norwood’s corner wide, but the referee had also blown for a push on a Brighton defender. Brighton boss Graham Potter acted at half-time making two changes as Glenn Murray and Aaron Connolly replaced Leonardo Trossard and Pascal Gross. United were inches away from making it 2-0 on 49 minutes. Another long ball forward caused alarm for Webster as McGoldrick muscled him off the ball before carrying it forward, rounding the ‘keeper but from a tight angle his low shot hit the outside of the post. Wilder then made a change as Ben Osborn replaced Luke Freeman on 53 minutes. The Blades netted again shortly after but once again VAR came to Brighton’s rescue. Norwood’s free-kick was headed towards goal by Egan, Ryan spilled it straight to O’Connell who netted but the video referee disallowed the strike for offside. Brighton then made their final change as Yves Bissouma replaced Montoya, whilst the Blades brought on Mousset for McBurnie. The Blades had the

better of the opening 15 minutes of the half, but the home side started to come back into the contest as two Mooy crosses forced the United backline into some scrambling defence. Norwood came to United’s rescue when he made a fantastic block after Davy Propper lined up a shot from 25 yards, and soon after Henderson tipped over a Connolly effort from 20 yards. On 75 minutes Enda Stevens became the first name into the book after stopping a counter with a trip. Egan made a great interception to halt a Brighton move down the right and also headed clear the resulting corner as United stayed strong at the back. At the other end the Blades came within a whisker of a second as Mousset cut in from the left, beat two players, but fired an effort just over from 20 yards. Whilst a few minutes later, McGoldrick steered Osborn’s cross over the bar on the stretch. Late bookings for Basham and McGoldrick were handed out, but United saw out the final moments to record yet another away win.

RIP FORMER BLADE AND WORLD CUP HERO MARTIN PETERS Sheffield United would like to express deepest condolences to the family and friends of our former player, manager and England World Cup winner, Martin Peters, who has passed away aged 76. Martin joined the Blades in July 1980 as a player/coach during a difficult period and eventually took on the manager’s post following the departure of Harry Haslam in 1981. He will be remembered fondly for his playing career which hit a peak in 1966 when he scored in the World Cup final as England beat West Germany 4-2 to lift the famous trophy for the first, and currently only time, in our history. His England career ended in 1974 after 67 appearances and 20 goals. Before he joined the Blades, he enjoyed a stellar playing career with the likes of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City. At West Ham he won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965, and with Spurs he was a League Cup winner twice (‘71 and ‘73) and a UEFA Cup winner in 1972. Current United boss Chris Wilder said: “Whilst it wasn’t a great period in our history, to have someone of his stature play, coach and manage the club was quite special. “His playing career speaks for itself with what he achieved at West Ham, Spurs and of course, most famously, with England. To play in that game in ‘66 and to score - that must have been special. “To lose such an iconic player is obviously very sad, and our thoughts are with Martin’s family at this time.” The thoughts of all at Bramall Lane are with Martin’s family and friends at this sad time.
