Sheffield’s Year of Reading Sheffield’s Year of Reading launches across the city on 15th January 2020 and will be a 12-month, citywide celebration of creativity and the written word. Reading is the key that unlocks the door – it helps us feel better, discover more, and unleashes our individual creativity. The Year of Reading will inspire us all about what reading can do for every one of us and the huge benefits that it brings to our everyday lives; how a story can take you to a faraway place in your head, imaginary or otherwise, or how reading a technical manual can
help you build something amazing that you’ve never built before. How reading an autobiography can help inspire you to change your plans or fill you with admiration, or how a Sci-Fi read can help you escape you into mysterious and fantastic worlds. Based on four themes: ‘Only Human, Rebellion’, ‘Exploration’ and ‘Creation’, the year will involve anyone who wants to be a part of it across the city. Everyone’s invited and everyone’s welcome. To get us into the reading spirit, the launch will be set in the Central Library and will introduce ‘Sheffield’s Favourite
Reads’; a citywide conversation about the books everyone loves. There will be an exhibition in the Central Library which will include the personal recommendations of numerous Sheffielders, including some wellknown faces. Each person will highlight their favourite book and what it means to them. From launch day onwards, people from across the city will be asked to tell us what their favourite read is and they will be in with a chance of winning a £100 book token if they take part. It doesn’t matter what kind of book it is, as long as it’s someone’s favourite.
They will need to fill in a Year of Reading postcard in their library or via the council online before 31 March. A shortlist will be drawn up on the 23rd April and an overall winner chosen in the autumn. More information is at: www. sheffield.gov.uk As well as ‘Sheffield’s Favourite Reads’, people from all over the city will be invited to come together in libraries, pubs, schools, living rooms, museums, parks, and many other venues to share the simple joy of words. It will be literary and silly, it will be big and small, it will be on the page and in the streets.
There will be lots of ways to get involved and more details will be available from January 2020. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “This is going to be a very special year. I’ve been listening to some of the planning that’s taking place and it really will be a city-wide, something for everyone, exciting time. Whether you read, you find reading difficult, or one of your new year resolutions is to get back into the swing of finding the time to read, we’ll have something for you.”

YORKSHIRE BRITPOP HEROES SHED SEVEN ANNOUNCE HUGE OUTDOOR DONCASTER SHOW With the roaring crowds of their ‘Shedcember’ UK tour still ringing in their ears, Shed Seven are delighted to announce plans for a huge summer show in our region in 2020. On Saturday 15th August this year, York’s premier Britpop poster boys will be headlining a very special show at Don-
caster Racecourse. This unique show will invite audiences to enjoy an entire day of racing at one of the UK’s most prestigious arenas, with the added bonus of a full Shed Seven set late into the evening. Rising to fame as one of the leading lights of the Britpop scene, some 30 years since their formation in York in 1990, Shed
Seven have established themselves as one of the nation’s favourite alternative rock bands. Turning heads with the release of their classic debut album ‘Change Giver’ in 1994, the Rick Witter five-piece unfurled a flurry of smash hits that would come to define the period and amassed an impressive fifteen Top 40 singles and four Top
20 albums over the next 5 years. After an extended hiatus in 2003, the Sheds surprised and delighted fans and critics alike as they returned with their first new studio album for 16 years: ‘Instant Pleasures’. Demonstrative of a band back at the top of their game and rippling with ideas once more, ‘Instant Pleasures’
delivered exactly what it said on the tin. Rightfully rewarded with a Top 10 UK chart position, rave reviews and national radio playlistings, the band are more indemand than ever. A hectic 2019 schedule saw them release their ‘Going For Gold’ greatest hits on goldcoloured vinyl for the first time, plus thrill audiences nationwide

City Taxis have unveiled ambitious sustainability plans to deliver an all-electric fleet of circa 2,000 cars, no later than 2025, starting with 700 by the end of 2020. This comes after Sheffield City Council announced plans for a Clean Air Zone which will see taxis charged £10 and buses £50 when driving through Sheffield’s city centre. City commented “With around 20,000 taxi bookings per week in the city centre, it would not be cost effective to have our taxis in the centre, so we are currently engaging in an EV pilot with ten of our drivers.” It is hoped that this announcement will kick start a rapid acceleration in Sheffield City’s migration to electric vehicles. Despite being one of England’s Greenest Cities and the only one to boast a National Park within its boundaries, Sheffield is behind the curve on migrating to a low emission infrastructure.
Out of 10,385 charging locations in the UK, Sheffield currently has only 33, equating to 0.3% of the UK’s charging infrastructure. The lack of charging infrastructure creates a barrier to the wider city region’s objectives to be greener, so they’ve teamed up with iCabbi and Nissan-Renault to create a solution in the introduction of City’s unique new Charging Hubs will potentially double the city’s available charging points. The proposed charging hubs will provide a more engaging experience for taxi drivers and the public, who can also use the stations to get refreshments, wifi and an opportunity to relax and take a break. Speaking about their ambitious plans, Arnie Singh, Managing Director of City Taxis, explains; “I’m very excited. I want Sheffield to have the first all-electric taxi fleet in the UK. If we are going for it, let’s go for it as a city and do it right. I want to thank Renault, iCabbi and Sheffield City Council for their support in helping us put this initiative to the top of our agenda.”

Did you hear about the guy getting hit by the same bicycle everyday, day after day? It was a vicious cycle. I took my car to the mechanic because it was making a terrible noise. He removed the Mariah Carey Christmas CD and now it’s fine. My boss said to me, “You are the worst train operator ever. How many trains have you derailed in the past year?” I said: “I’m not sure. It’s hard to keep track.” My girlfriend threatened to leave me if I didn’t stop pointing out random exits and entrances I said: “There’s the door.” I was driving home the other day, when suddenly a group of robbers jumped in and stole everything. They were pirates of the car I be in. Did you hear about the guy who invented the door knocker? He won the no-bell prize.

Sheffield awarded gold for LGBT+ services
In Stonewall’s first ever Children and Young People’s Champion Awards, Sheffield City Council has been given gold status for its work supporting the inclusion of LGBT+ young people. The award recognises activities from the council, SAYiT Sheffield’s LGBT+ young people’s charity, and Learn Sheffield, our school improvement partnership.
Activities include: • LGTB+ training to foster carers, school staff and youth service managers • Trans awareness training for over 400 employees • One to one LGBT+ mental health support in schools • LGTB+ young people’s involvement in all council services, including at the highest level with cabinet members • Mental health training for 400 children and young people and staff • A student emotional wellbeing resource for schools and colleges Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families, said:“This award highlights the fantastic work the Council has done with our LGBT+ young people and our partners SAYiT and Learn Sheffield to improve our services. “We know that LGTB+ young people are more likely to experience bullying as well as mental health problems, and can often find it hard to get the support they need. This award recognises the wonderful work that all our staff and partner do to work with young people to deliver improved services where and when they are needed.”
Steve Slack, CEO of SAYiT – Sheffield’s LGBT+ young people’s charity, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Stonewall has recognised the excellent work being undertaken in Sheffield to support LGBT+ young people with this prestigious award. “We are very proud of our organisation’s working partnership and collaboration with Sheffield City Council and the positive differences we are able to make to young people’s lives. “We applaud the Council for its support for us, for the work we do and for their continued commitment to improving the lives of LGBT+ young people. “At a time when we have seen an increase in LGBT+ hate crime nationally it makes us proud that innovative work is being done locally to challenge such bigotry and to confront LGBT+ related bullying. This is a well-deserved and hard won award and demonstrates Sheffield’s commitment to making this wonderful city of ours an even more inclusive one
for all of our young people. Many congratulations.’’ Stephen Betts at Learn Sheffield said: “The collaborative approach of our schools, local charities and key partners to tackle homophobic bullying and support our LGBT+ young people is essential if we are to be an inclusive city. It is fantastic that Sheffield has been recognised by Stonewall with the gold award.” Sarah Rose, Senior Children and Young People Programmes Manager at Stonewall, said: “Sheffield City Council has worked hard to put LGBT inclusion at the heart of all that they do. We know how crucial it can be for LGBT young people to have services they can turn to when they are in need. This award recognises Sheffield’s City Council, SAYiT and Learn Sheffield’s efforts and commitment to making the world a better place for all LGBT people.” Stonewall’s Children and Young Peoples Champion award replaces its Education Equality Index and takes a holistic overview of services working with young people up to the age of 18. Sheffield City Council has been a Stonewall Education Champion since 2009 and has been consistently recognised for its LGBT+ services.

being an independent visitor year of reading Independent visitors is a Sheffield City Council scheme which aims to match volunteers who will build helpful and positive relationships with young people who are in care or who have recently left care. The visitors befriend and visit young people once a month to do fun activities and help to provide support and consistency in their lives. Here is what a young care leaver said about his dedicated independent visitor: “My favourite visit was going to the countryside for a bike ride. It was my first time in the countryside and it was amazing. I had never ridden a bike for 20km before, just for short distances when I was little, and that was it. And oh, my legs the next day! I couldn’t feel them. I didn’t know this was an option of something to do. I’m glad he suggested it because I really enjoyed it.” A young person currently in care shares her experience about her independent visitor: “Having an independent visitor really helps me to get out of the house. I don’t do that very often at all and so the visits really help with this. I don’t have many friends so it’s been good to have her in my life. It has been consistent for 2 years,
which is really good for me given the inconsistencies in my life before coming into care. I have built up a really good relationship with her over the years. We have done a fantastic range of visits together. She is willing to travel to see me and I appreciate that as it’s a big ask for a volunteer.” Roxy Green is a volunteer independent visitor who really enjoys her time with her young person, she said: “I decided to become an independent visitor because I enjoy working with children and wanted to do something a bit different. I have been visiting my young person for nearly three and a half years. Her favourite things to do are trampoling, painting pottery and going to the cinema. I get the opportunity to have fun as well as giving her emotional support when she needs it. Having someone consistently in her life who is just for her, has been really valuable. Our relationship is also important to me. I love hearing about what my young person has been up to and I am really proud of all the things she does.” For more information about becoming an independent visitor, please email iv@sheffield.gov.uk or call Angela Taylor or Sarah Javes on 0114 2288522/0114 2288556.

Marie Hooper of Sheffield lost six and a half stone & went through six IVF attempts to realise her dream of becoming a mother. The former hairdresser, who weighed 18st before getting pregnant, thought all she needed to do was to lose weight in order to conceive but things were not that simple. Now mum of two Marie, said ‘We did a test and found out my husband had Azoospermia, that’s when we decided to sign up for IVF at the Jessop wing and I was advised to get to a healthy BMI’ Marie decided to join her local Slimming World to help her to achieve a healthy BMI swapping her unhealthy eating habits for home cooked meals whilst enjoying moderate exercise ‘I swapped takeaways and cider for delicious home cooked meals and the odd Vodka and Diet Coke. I did exercise along the way but never stepped foot in the gym, I couldn’t afford it with the expense of the IVF treatment but I went on long walks and bought an exercise bike and I gave it my all! There’s no gimmicks, no pressure and certainly no humiliation’ Marie had her first round of fertility treatment in March 2015 but it was not successful, as her body was not responding to the IVF drugs. About a month and multiple injections later, Marie, who had at this point already achieved her target weight of 11.5st, found out she was pregnant with her first son, James. Marie and her husband decided to try for a second baby, this time wasn’t as easy as before. Marie didn’t respond to the drugs. Marie said her fifth attempt had resulted in a pregnancy, but her world came crumbling down when she lost her baby.
It was such a difficult time for Marie, but she decided after a few days she wanted to try again. It wasn’t until March 2018 that her sixth IVF attempt worked, and Marie was pregnant with her second son Jack. Marie Continued to eat healthy throughout both her pregnancies as Slimming World works in partnership with the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) to support pregnant women and breastfeeding mums to manage their weight healthily through pregnancy and beyond. Slimming World have an adapted version of their Food Optimising eating plan, especially for pregnant members. The plan encourages plenty of healthy foods like fruit and vegetables, lean meats, poultry and pulses, pasta and potatoes, while encouraging extra portions of certain foods to help support energy needs and a
good balance of important nutrients such as calcium and fibre. Marie has not only realised her dream as a mother through her IVF journey, but her weight loss has allowed her to pursue her dream job as a Slimming World Consultant. Marie says that everything she has taken from her determination of becoming a Mother is what she wants to take to people every where in all walks of life. ‘I want to take that on as a career, making people believe that if they put their mind to it, they can achieve anything, whether they want to try and get pregnant or fit in that wedding dress. I want to help people.’ Maire runs her Slimming World groups in Norfolk Park every Thursday 9.30am, 5.30pm & 7.30pm at the Victoria Methodist Church.

It is customary for many angling writers to churn out a ‘review of I do, and I remember when that was fishing and it was enjoyable; nowadays, the the year’ or even ‘what to look forward pressure to catch is driven by Facebook to in 2020’ at this time of the year, but and Twitter, not enjoyment. WE DIDN’T GET THE RUB OF THE GREEN - WARNE Manager Paul Warne was left pleased with his side’s display despite bowing out of the Emirates FA Cup at the Third Round stage. The Millers played the majority of the tie against Hull City with 10 men after Adam Thompson’s first-half dismissal, but the Championship side scraped through
following a late winner from Tom Eaves. “It seemed a bit harsh,” said Warne of the 3-2 defeat. “I’m really proud of my team and it’s a bit cheesy after a defeat when a manager goes on about ‘my team’ but I thought they were excellent. We had 66 minutes without a player and asked a lot of the lads

out of possession. “They made their changes bringing their superstars on which, obviously, made a difference. I still thought we defended well. I might have been on the back-end of a couple of bad decisions. “We had a block from an offside player on Matt Olosunde which led to a goal. There’s an offside for the third goal which they got a corner from. Maybe I’ve got it wrong. “Overall, I’m proud of the team. We hit the post late on for a draw. Unfortunately today wasn’t our day but I’m not knocking anything the lads did.” Speaking of the
red car for Adam Thompson, Warne was pleased with how his side reacted to go on and take the lead despite a numerical disadvantage. “Adam says he got some of the ball but, in the modern day game, if you’re off the ground and out of control it’s deemed a red. If that’s all the case, I have no complaints,” the Millers boss said. “We’ve got good characters. We make them fit and motivated to play for this great club and they give everything. The fact we played for so long with 10 men and scored two great goals, we maybe could have had another couple.
VASSELL TAKES CONFIDENCE FROM TIGERS CLASH Despite the Millers falling to defeat against Hull City in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round at the weekend, Kyle Vassell found the net in style with an ambitious half-volley that did pull his side ahead before halftime. The forward has now scored two goals in the last three games, the first being an overhead kick during the 4-0 thumping of AESSEAL New York Stadium, with that then followed up by the most recent strike versus the Tigers. "Matt Olosunde had thrown one into me
a few minutes earlier and I set the ball back to him, but I realised the opposition player didn't get that tight to me. With that in mind, I thought I'd suck him in and let it go over my shoulder," Vassell said, recollecting his finish. "I've hit one like that before in fairness, but for it to hit the bar and post before going in, I'll definitely take that." Unfortunately that wasn't enough to prevent the Millers from exiting the FA Cup as their East Yorkshire counterparts ran out as 3-2 victors courtesy
of a last-gasp winner from Tom Eaves, but Vassell insists that there were plenty of positives to take With his recent form in front of goal at the forefront of his mind, Vassell believes he can take confidence from the last few displays, and he is determined to add to the tally of three goals that he already has to his name this term. "In fairness, I'll take any goal that I can get, but it's been tough for me so far this season and I've scored nowhere near as many as I should've done or that I'm capable of," he added.
"That's probably because I've not been letting enough shots go with my left and right foot. After the nature of the goal against Hull, that's something I will keep doing now because you never know what will happen. "It's a team game and the performance we gave against Championship opposition was brilliant because I thought we were the better team for large spells. We fight together and it's a great bunch of lads, so we move on and go again."
MAY THANKS FANS FOR THEIR BACKING AFTER MOVE
Alfie May has thanked the Rovers fans for their support after completing a move to Cheltenham Town to end his three-year spell at the club. The forward made the move from nonleague Hythe Town in January 2016, and leaves having hit 23 senior goals for the club.
He said: “I have loved my time here, I’ve met some team-mates who will be my friends for life and I have to say thank you to all the staff who have helped me throughout my time here. “Coming to Doncaster and turning me into a Yorkshireman gave me a future wife and a beautiful baby boy
on the way. This is an emotional ending as Doncaster gave me the opportunity to become a professional footballer which was my dream. “Thank you to all the fans who have been there supporting and singing my name, it has been amazing. You will always have a place in my heart.”
“My only disappointment was the first ten minutes, we showed them too much respect. I asked them to start quicker. The other 80 minutes I have no complaints with. I’m really proud to stand here as their manager.“I’ll leave the stadium happy because I’m happy with what I’ve seen.
Sometimes you get the rub of the green, sometimes you don’t. I don’t think our play got the luck I thought we deserved.” The goal of the game, though, was scored by Kyle Vassell. A terrific first-time half-volley saw the former Blackpool man register his third of the season.
“It was a great goal. Vass has got lots of great things to his game. He’s a great player and great around the place. I was happy to start him today,” Warne enthused. “We’ve asked a lot of our players over the Christmas period and you’re a brave manager to take
people like Chieo off. But we were fatiguing a little bit and I didn’t want him not available for Oxford. We’ve got issues already with Joe Mattock, Thommo (Adam Thompson) and Robbo (Clark Robertson) not available. We’re struggling at the back, massively.”

WE GOT WHAT WE DESERVED Garry Monk demanded a response at Brighton in the FA Cup following three successive league defeats and his players delivered at the Amex. Adam Reach scored the only goal of the third round tie as Wednesday ran out worthy winners. The Owls go into the hat for Monday’s fourth round draw and Monk said the win was the least his side deserved. He told swfc.co.uk: “It was a very good, professional performance and I
am pleased for the players.“We’ve had a tough time this last week with three defeats and I wanted to see a response and got one.“Brighton are a Premier League club, they went with a strong team and that makes the win all the more impressive. “I thought we played well all over the field today, with some outstanding individual performances. “Young Osaze was fantastic, he should be very proud of himself and so should the club.” The only blot on the South Coast landscape
was an injury to Steven Fletcher, who was carried off on a stretcher early in the second half. Monk added: “It looked like he landed awkwardly and hopefully it won’t be anything serious. “He’s kind of hyperextended his knee and that can be very sore. The good news is that I’ve just been told the x-ray has come back clear so there’s nothing wrong with the knee structurally. “We will have to wait for the full details over the coming days.”
FLETCHER WINS DECEMBER VOTE UNDER-23S GO DOWN TO LATE CREWE WINNER Steven Fletcher has won the Owls’ December Player of the Month award. The striker ended November with a brace at Charlton and started December in similar
mood, scoring twice against Brentford at Hillsborough. Goals followed on the road at both Derby and Nottingham Forest. Fletcher left the action early at Brighton during
the Owls’ FA Cup third round win on Saturday and Garry Monk will issue an update later this week when he briefs the media ahead of the Championship visit to Leeds.
The top-three vote for December’s Player of the Month was as follows: Steven Fletcher: 27% Barry Bannan: 19% Dominic Iorfa: 17%

Wednesday’s Under-23s began 2020 with a 2-1 defeat at home to Crewe on a rainy afternoon at Middlewood Road. Both sides could have emerged victorious in truth but the Cheshire outfit snatched the win after recovering from an early blow, Jordan O’Brien giving the hosts the lead. But the Alex fought back as substitute Josh Lundstrum scored twice to give his side the plaudits. The Owls started the brighter with a Ben Hughes cross finding O’Brien, whose shot went just over the bar in the first minute. O’Brien would not be denied however and on four minutes fired into the top corner after Conor Grant won possession from James Jones and fed the midfield man. Ciaran Brennan was alert to Joe Robbins’ through ball to slide in and clear the danger as Crewe looked for a route back into the game. Owen Dale then found Robbins out wide and the resultant cross gave Joe Wildsmith his first real action of the afternoon. At the other end, Conor Grant set up Liam Shaw, who forced a fine save from David Richards before Fraser Preston’s shot whistled over the bar just before the break. Shaw fed Preston early in the second half but the latter narrowly missed out on making it 2-0. Crewe pressed for a leveller and their perseverance would prevail on 71 minutes when Lundstrum stroked the ball home from close range to bring the score level. Wednesday were let off the hook when Lundstrum almost doubled his tally a minute later but his chip over Wildsmith came back off the post. Jack Stobbs held off his marker to cross to Preston in the box but the forward headed just over as the young Owls attempted to regain the lead. But Owen Dale found Lundstrum at the back post to head home with five minutes to go as the Alex took the lead for the first time. Wednesday threw everything at the visitors in search of an equaliser but Crewe held firm to return over the Pennines with the points.

BLADES MAKE EARLY MOVE IN TRANSFER WINDOW Chris Wilder has made an early move in the January transfer window, with the addition of a versatile England international. Jack Rodwell, formerly of Everton, Manchester City, Sunderland and, last term Blackburn Rovers, has penned a short-term deal at Bramall Lane until the end of the campaign. The 28-year-old, who is comfortable in a number of defensive or midfield roles, joined the Blades on trial prior to Christmas and has earned a contract having impressed boss Chris Wilder and his staff. Of his first signing
of 2020, Wilder remarked: “Jack has been with us for a couple of weeks or so now and he’s been excellent around the place. “He offers us versatility and experience in a number of key positions and adds further depth to the group which is important at this stage of the season.” Rodwell began his career at Goodison Park at the age of seven and became the youngest player to represent the Toffees in Europe, when he debuted against AZ Alkmaar, aged 16 years 284 days. During his time on Merseyside,
Rodwell earned senior international recognition, making his England bow against Spain in November 2011. Manchester City paid £12 million for his services in August 2012, but after two seasons at the Etihad Stadium, Rodwell joined Sunderland on a five-year-deal for another substantial fee. The Southport born operator spent four years at the Stadium of Light, clocking up 67 appearances before leaving in June 2018. Last term, Rodwell appeared 21 times for Blackburn Rovers in the Sky Bet Championship.
and Luke Freeman controlling the game, although the visitors offered a threat on the break and Jagielka required to clear the danger with Rowe lurking from Williams cross. At the other end, Clarke saw a header from a rightwing corner tipped over by Hornby. As half-time approached there was a lengthy stoppage following an unfortunate clash between Bryan and Verrips as they attempted to stop a Fylde attack. Following treatment and a concussion check, the Dutch stopper was replaced by Henderson, before Osborn was booked for a mistimed high challenge on Burke. The Blades started
the second period on the attack, but this time Hornby kept out a Robinson effort at the back post, from Kieron Freeman’s centre. But at the other end, from Haughton’s free-kick, Whitmore headed wide with the goal at his mercy. As the hour approached, Basham took the place of Rodwell, moments before Morrison had the ball in the net from Clarke’s knockdown at the back post. Unfortunately, though, following a brief VAR check it was adjudged the skipper was offside. But in the 61st minute, CLARKE wasn’t to be denied, firing home on the rebound, after Luke

BLADES SAFELY THROUGH TO ROUND 4 United overcame National League outfit AFC Fylde to ensure a safe passage to the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup. Callum Robinson and Leon Clarke scored a goal in each half respectively to see of the challenge of the non-league side, who got on the scoresheet late on through Jordan Williams. For the cup clash, boss Wilder made eleven changes to the side that faced Liverpool. New signing Rodwell was handed a debut, whilst Verrips also made a first senior appearance in goal. United, after a positive start, took the lead in the eighth minute. Luke Freeman’s ball in from the left picked out ROBINSON who controlled and hit the ball in one movement and with the aid of a deflection, his shot nestled in the bottom corner past the despairing dive of Hornby. With 12 minutes remaining, the visitors gave themselves hope of a revival, as WILLIAMS got in behind the Blades defence and lifted the ball calmly over Henderson from Bradley’s well weighted pass. BLADES TO VISIT THE NEW DEN IN ROUND 4 United have been drawn away against Millwall in the FA Cup fourth round. The Blades advanced to tonight's draw after defeating AFC Fylde in round three, and will now take on the Championship side at the Den. Ties will take place between the 24th-27th January.
