ALBERT SNODGRASS

My right arm hurts like crazy, but only between 9 am & 11 am. Worst case of ten-ish elbow ever. 1 week before Grandad died we bought him a snowboard... He went downhill very quickly after that. Why was the baby jalapeno shivering? He was a little chilli. I wrote a song about a tortilla. Actually it’s more of a wrap. The other day I saw a bucket at the hardware store with a sign that said: dead batteries - £1 each. I thought to myself: “These should be free of charge.” My friend went completely bald years ago, he still carries a comb with him. He just can’t part with it. I once bought a wooden car. Wooden engine, wooden doors, wooden wheels, wooden seats, put the wooden key in the wooden ignition. Wooden start. This morning my son said his ear hurt and I asked : on the inside or outside? So he walks out the front door then comes back in and says: “both”. My friend claims that he “accidentally” glued himself to his autobiography, but I don’t believe him. But that’s his story and he’s sticking to it. My wife complained that my life revolving around social media has destroyed the way we communicate as a family... So I blocked her on Facebook.

BRAND NEW TO SHEFFIELD: A NEW PERSPECTIVE IN RETIREMENT LIVING A selection of spacious apartments designed exclusively with retirement in mind are coming soon to Jacob’s Gate – Sheffield’s brand-new development by award winning developer, Adlington Retirement Living. Currently under construction on Troutbeck Road, the development will feature a privatelyowned range of 65 spacious one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Contemporary accommodation There are plenty of thoughtful touches and services available to make life a little bit easier too. The apartments have been designed with later life in mind and every detail, from the height of the door handles to the layout of the

COULD YOU BE THE NEW CHAIR FOR THE SHEFFIELD BRAND PARTNERSHIP? Since 2016 a number of organisations in Sheffield have been working together in a Brand Partnership to help create a meaningful and true representation of the city. This has been steered by the City Growth department at Sheffield City Council. The Brand Partnership originally comprised of representatives from both Sheffield universities, the Chamber of Commerce, the Culture Consortium, Sheffield BID and Sheffield City Council - though other key partner organisations have been added to the group over time, such as the Sheffield Property Association. “Sheffield doesn’t shout enough about what it does” has become an all too familiar comment over the years and so the purpose of the group was to find a way to accurately tell Sheffield’s story, in a unique and meaningful way. The city’s identity isn’t singular. As we’ve transitioned from heavy industry into more specialised manufacturing, and subsequently expanded on this with a number of other specialist sectors, telling Sheffield’s story has become more difficult without a common denominator or a place in which a variety of stories can be told. In 2019 an updated visual identity for Sheffield was rolled out alongside the launch of the ‘Sheffield Makes’ campaign, which saw a large number of joint projects created across the city. This then culminated in a new storytelling web platform for the city as www. whatmakesSheffield.com was launched at the end of 2019. Now that the new brand and campaign have been established and are starting to gain momentum, we feel it's an appropriate time for a new chairperson to breathe life into the Sheffield Brand Partnership. Starting in February 2020, we need someone who will help drive a group of committed and passionate people, to build on the success of what has been created. Someone who will

bathroom has been considered to make everyday life safer, simpler and more comfortable for homeowners. Each of the private apartments will include generous living areas and contemporary fitted kitchens with integrated appliances. Many have stylish en-suite shower rooms and separate bathrooms, and for that all-important outside space, most apartments feature a walk on balcony or patio area, overlooking the beautifully landscaped gardens.

access to people you know and trust.

A community on your doorstep This new, high-end, development will offer the best of both worlds. Homeowners can enjoy the privacy of their own peaceful and spacious apartment, spend time in the leafy gardens (which are maintained by an expert team of gardeners), relax in the hair salon, therapy room or lounge and then invite their friends over to enjoy the table service restaurant, without having to think about cooking or washing up.

Award-winning expertise Adlington picked up the much-coveted What House? Gold Award for Best Retirement Development in 2017 for their Otley development in West Yorkshire. Alexandra Johnson, Adlington Sales and Marketing Director comments: “Adlington’s vision is to empower our older generation to live a long, happy and healthy life. By creating spacious homes in safe and secure environments with active communities - we are responding to the changing needs of retirees and helping individuals live an independent life.”

Moving made easy Adlington go the extra mile to ensure the journey to retirement living goes as smoothly as possible, by offering an optional decluttering service, and supportive sales team on hand every step of the way. They even throw-in a unique, complimentary 8-hour Handyman service to help you achieve the best look for your new apartment.

Peace of mind Adlington’s real point of difference is being To register your interest please call our able to offer round the clock, 24-hour on-site helpful sales team on 0114 553 9554. support, and tailored care should it ever be needed, in the future. By offering optional and flexible care, homeowners and their families have peace of mind, which is cited as one of the key reasons why so many people choose to invest in an Adlington apartment. Security is of paramount importance and a sophisticated emergency call system operates in each apartment and throughout all the communal areas and gardens, as well as a security video entry so you only allow energise as well as galvanise, steer and direct, to help elevate the city to greater heights by getting the most out of key partnerships working in collaboration. We are looking for someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about the city’s culture, economy, arts, education and wellbeing. Ideally you would also have: • Existing relationships with multiple city stakeholders in a variety of sectors • A proven track record in delivering value in your own endeavours as well as those for the city • The ability to commit to chairing quarterly meetings and reviewing work on an intermittent basis • You would also need to be able to attend the first Brand Partnership meeting in February 2020. Please note, this is an unpaid voluntary position, however it does offer a fantastic opportunity to play an integral role in shaping Sheffield’s city narrative and influencing positive external perceptions of the city, while raising your own professional profile across the city and beyond. How to apply If you think this might be you, please submit a statement describing why you feel you would be suitable for the position, along with your contact details. Deadline for application is 5pm on Friday 24 January. Please send applications to: mark.mobbs@sheffield.gov.uk Likewise, if you have any questions prior to making an application please feel free to get in touch on the email above.

YORKSHIRE WATER WARNS PUBLIC ABOUT BOGUS CALLERS IN SHEFFIELD Yorkshire Water is urging customers to look out for friends, family and neighbours who could be vulnerable to bogus callers. The warning comes after several reports in Sheffield of conmen pretending to be Yorkshire Water staff, so they can gain access to peoples’ homes. In response, Yorkshire Water is encouraging people to sign up to its free password scheme which gives added protection and peace of mind that callers are genuine. Yorkshire Water Service Manager, Katrina Feather, said: "We know that unscrupulous people often pretend to be from Yorkshire Water or ‘the water board’ and use this as an excuse to get into people’s homes. "All our staff wear a uniform and carry photo identity cards which they're happy to show to you. "If a caller claims to be from Yorkshire Water, put the chain on the door before opening it and ask to see their identity card and why they're visiting. If you're at all unsure and wish to double check the caller's identity call us before letting them in. "You can also arrange for our employees to use a password when they visit - simply let us know your chosen password and we'll make sure all our employees use it. "To set up your password please call 0800 1 38 78 78.” The password scheme works by enabling customers to register an agreed personal password with the company through a simple phone call. Then, whenever they receive a phone call or a visit to their property by someone claiming to be from Yorkshire Water, they should always ask for this password. If the caller cannot provide them with their password, they should not under any circumstances let them into their property or continue with the phone call. And if a customer is given the correct password but still has concerns about the identity of the caller, they can verify their identity simply by contacting the company on 0800 1 38 78 78. Genuine Yorkshire Water employees won't mind waiting whilst their details are fully checked. For more information and advice on how to protect yourself from falling victim to bogus callers, visit yorkshirewater.com/boguscallers.

Claire is Derbyshire’s Woman of the Year! A super slimmer from near Derbyshire has been named one of Slimming World ‘Woman of the Year’ finalists 2019 thanks to her incredible 11st 10.5lb weight loss. Claire Shaw has slimmed from 23st 10lb to 11st 13.5lb. And was chosen to represent South Yorkshire in Slimming Worlds National Woman of the Year 2019 competition, which aims to find the UK and Ireland’s most inspiring female slimmer. Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition celebrates the achievements of thousands of women up and down the country who have made long-term healthy lifestyle changes. Claire says: “When I first joined group I never dreamt that I would be in the position I am now. Losing weight has made such a big difference to my life. My health has improved, I have more energy, I’m happier and I feel more comfortable in my own skin.” Claire joined Slimming World in January 2017 after feeling unhappy about her size. “I tried a number of different ways to lose weight but they usually left me feeling hungry or miserable – or both, in fact. With Slimming World it’s completely different. “My family and friends are all amazed by how much I can eat and lose weight. I still eat all my favourite meals, like cooked breakfasts/curries/roast dinners. I just prepare and cook them differently now – and they taste so much better. I never have to miss out and I don’t have to get hung up on weighing and measuring everything I eat. I’ve picked up so many tips and healthy recipes from the other members at my Slimming World group, too. “I know it can feel like a big step joining Slimming World because you don’t know what to expect, but, right from the first moment I walked into my group I was made to feel at ease, and the support I’ve

received has been amazing. I look forward to going each week to catch up with all of my new friends – I just love it!” Claire lost 5.5lbs in her first week and was blown away that the changes she’d made had such a big impact so quickly. As the weight started to come off, she started to think about how active she was, Claire now loves heading to her local gym. She says: “I feel like a different woman to the one who walked into Slimming World all those months ago and being a finalist in the National Woman of the Year is a real honour because there are so many amazing women out there. I remember feeling like I would never be happy in my own skin again, but I’ve realised that when people believe in you – and you believe in yourself – you can do anything you set your mind to. I really hope my weight loss can inspire other people to get started on their own journey and know that there’s a whole group of people waiting to support them every step of the way – especially at the Huthwaite group.” Kelly Black, who runs the Huthwaite group, says: “I’m so proud of Claire. She’s a fantastic ambassador for Slimming World and what she’s achieved is nothing short of incredible. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women – and men – in Derbyshire to change their lives in the same way.” The Huthwaite Slimming World group is held every Tuesday at 9.30am, 3.30pm,5.30pm & 7.30pm at Mansfield Hosiery Mills Sports and Social Club. To join or find out more call Kelly on 07534508107.

EVERLY PREGNANT BROTHERS PLAY SPECIAL ONE-OFF I’M GETTING A ELECTRIC SHOW FOR LEADMILL BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS WORD.... Everly Pregnant Brothers to go electric for one night only as part of The Leadmill’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The Brothers channel their inner Bob Dylan for their very own ‘Judas’ gig. Sheffield favourites, The Everly Pregnant Brothers will return to the iconic Leadmill venue as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations. The band will be ditching the ukuleles and going fully electric for what promises to be a raucous night on Saturday 2nd May. The news follows on

from The Bootleg Beatles announcing a special standing show at the venue last month. “To celebrate 40 years of the iconic Leadmill venue - the Brothers wanted to do something special as a tribute - Pete recalled the time Bob Dylan rocked out on electric guitar at his UK shows in 1966 and was heckled and called ‘Judas’ by the audience. We thought it would be fun and fitting to ditch the ukuleles for one night and go ‘electric’” - The Brothers “Everly Pregnant Brothers have become a proper

Sheffield staple and we’re so glad to have them back in the building” said Sam Feeley, live

promoter at The Leadmill. “It’s going to be a real one off this, the gigs are mad enough as they

are so imagine it with a full electric set up!” Tickets for the event are on sale

now through The Leadmill’s website, www.leadmill. co.uk/event/everlypregnant-brothers

The world- renowned clairvoyant, medium and psychic Clint Baptiste is back! and he’s calling in at Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 30th January. Join the paranormal sensation as he takes you on a hilarious yet touching journey through his life, out the other side and beyond the Celestial Curtains. Clinton Baptiste is the hapless clairvoyant, medium and psychic from Peter Kay’s smash hit Channel 4 tv show Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights. Now, some 18 years after the show aired, he returns to conjure up his extraordinary powers for a new generation. Clinton will give readings to the audience, offering advice from beyond the grave. He will predict your future, tell you about your past and all manner of spooky stuff an’ that. But more, he takes you through his demise, his comeback and finally… finally on this special night, he will attempt to pass over to The Other Side and return (before the venue want you all out)… with The Answer! Clint Bapiste Sheffield City Hall, Thursday 30th January Tickets available from the City Hall Box Office and sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

SOUTH YORKSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE, WITH SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE AND THE PRINCE’S TRUST ARE RECRUITING Do You Have A Young Person Between 16 – 25 Who Would Benefit From Our Award Winning Programme? We are presently recruiting for our 22nd Team Programme. Please take time to read through our offer below. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and South Yorkshire Police have teamed up with the Prince's Trust and Barnsley College to deliver our award winning 12 week TEAM programme. The course is open to 16 - 25 year olds and is a life changing 12 week adventure. So far we have delivered twenty one programmes from Barnsley, Dearne and Sheffield. In that time we have transformed over 200 young people’s lives. Also in this period we have undertaken twenty one community projects four of which won the coveted Prince’s Trust Community impact award for Yorkshire and Humberside for three of these whilst in Goldthorpe our involvement with their community was the catalyst for the new ‘embankment project.’ A project that is even today continuing to grow. We have had two Young Ambassadors for the region, one recently winning Regional Ambassador of the year and shortlisted for a Pride of Britain Award. Three Rising Stars young people who have gone on to full time employment after a difficult start. All of this work was recently recognised when His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales requested to meet one of our teams. The Prince’s Trust Team programme is based in Dearne Fire Station, Barnsley (Cudworth) and Sheffield (Parkway) Fire Station, the young people will get involved

in team building activities, a week-long residential trip away to the Peak District, a community project and two weeks of work experience during the course. They will also get advice on employability, as well as gaining nationally recognised qualifications including; • Prince’s Trust Qualification in Employment, Teamwork and Community • Level 2 HABC Food Hygiene • Level 2 HABC First Aid at Work • Level 2 HABC Working Safely • John Muir Discovery Award Add to this enrichment sessions on · Dementia awareness · Drug awareness · Internet security · Drive for life · Nourishment and nutrition · Sexual health We push the young people to believe that they can achieve anything, to show them that is just hard work and commitment that can see them succeed. The end of every programme is celebrated with a final presentation in the Town Hall that each programme is tied to. The young people can then present themselves and show their family and friends the journey they have been on and how far they have come. Our programme is without doubt leading the way for its content and delivery and we hope to be able to offer this throughout the South Yorkshire region within the next 12 months. Offering these fantastic opportunities to many more young people in our region for many years to come. Here is a link to the Prince’s Trust website which outlines each week on the programme - https://www.princes-trust.org.uk/help-foryoung-people/get-job/boost-your-confidence/ your-team-journey

It must also be seasonally more than others is; “How do you get selective, there is no point in digging up the sponsored?” It’s a huge query, with many pictures of when you last caught a fish, during different facets, and my column is sadly your summer session floater fishing for carp to too short to cover them all… To begin, it publish in January, so you’ll have go out and depends what you mean by sponsored. I catch some more… Are you good at talking know of a small handful of anglers who to people? Fellow anglers? If not, you’ll be make their living, pay their mortgage and horrified to learn that a show commitment may bills through angling and that number gets well be part off the deal too. If you are lucky, less each year as manufacturers reduce their your accommodation and food will be covered, budgets. but don’t expect to be paid for that weekend, If you want a couple of quid off your bait bill, and the shows are hard work indeed! You then it’s relatively easy to approach a bait won’t just be expected to talk to customers, company, and agree to pay less than the market you’ll have to set up the day before, make the rate for your bait, but bear in mind, you’re tea, take the cash, sort the card machine, spend still a customer, the company are still making two days on your feet, restock and replenish money off you and you have a commitment and if you don’t have the underpinning which goes both ways…but can you make it last? You are now under pressure; the company knowledge required, you’ll get found out very quickly… then you’ll have to take the stand will require regular catch reports to justify your discount and unless you fish every week, down at the end of the show, and drive home this can be a tough ask. I do know of so called afterwards! I love the show season, but it’s extremely tiring! sponsored anglers who visit an easy water Now you’ve shown that you can produce the every month or so, bag up on carp, take loads goods regularly, will you want to be paid? of pictures (perhaps turn the carp around to This is apparently the Holy Grail amongst take more pictures, thus ‘doubling’ their catch many anglers who believe they have what it rate) and drip feed them onto social media in takes to be the next Matt Hayes, the next Des an attempt to appear consistent, but otherwise it all adds to the pressure. Blanked? It’s a week Taylor or the next Jeremy Wade. Rarely will any everyday angler be paid to use any product until you get another chance, what happens if by a company. Only those anglers at the very you blank again? You will soon see how the top of their game can demand a fee to be the pressure rises… ‘face’ of the brand, so you’ll have to put a What about free products? Bait and tackle? It’s stepping things up a gear and the company massive amount of effort into knocking them off their perch (geddit?) if you want to achieve providing the freebies will definitely want a regular supply of content for their social media such glory. Good luck with that, they’re at the top for a reason, super consistent, big match channels but will probably tie you to a couple winners, big fish anglers, great with people or of features for the angling press too. It won’t a whiz on the development front; can you do be a blog style piece of writing, something

any or all of that? If so, you may just have a chance… More reasonable would be the expectation to secure a proper job within your target company and as a result, the free bait and tackle becomes a perk of the paid employment. Such positions are much prized though, so you’ll have to stand out, and the old adage ‘it’s not what you know but who you know’ is very apparent in the angling trade, so make some friends fast if you want to get on! It’s also true to suggest that once you cross someone in the know, it can come back to bite you later on so beware! So, you still think it’s for you? Skills necessary are the ability to catch fish whatever the weather or time of year, produce grammatically correct and engaging copy, take awesome pictures, be personable on the bank and at the shows, social media savvy, and be able to offer information, advice and guidance to your fellow anglers. It’s a huge commitment, and I’ve lost count of the number of ‘wannabees’ who have joined teams I’ve been involved in only to be ousted within weeks because they have spectacularly failed to achieve the required standards or have

committed some faux pas or other. When someone asks if they can join one of the teams I run, my first question to them is; “what can you offer?” Invariably, some respond by asking me what I mean, thinking that they will get something for nothing, whilst others will give a comprehensive run down of achievements and captures, but others won’t even do me the courtesy of a reply. I’ve even had emails from anglers who have copied in direct competitors to the same blanket begging email! Unfortunately, some anglers are more interested in telling other anglers that they are sponsored rather than doing the job they are supposed to be doing as they think it makes them a superstar. It doesn’t, it may help your angling, but the reason for your sponsorship is to sell product and enhance the brand… Think not what your sponsor can do for you, but what can you do for your sponsor and you won’t go far wrong… good luck!

THE LADS WERE EXCELLENT - WARNE Paul Warne has lauded the performance of his Rotherham United players following the 3-1 victory away to Oxford United, and the Millers boss can’t wait for the next fixture in Sky Bet League One with his men now on a six-game unbeaten run and top of the division.

On an entertaining afternoon at the Kassam Stadium, Kyle Vassell popped up with two goals and Richard Wood found the net in a commanding performance, and Warne insists the result was deserved. “I thought we were really good, particularly in the first half, and we

deservedly went in 3-0 up. We had a plan of how to play against them - we had to block inside spaces and we didn’t mind defending crosses,” he said. “The lads were excellent and I told them to not let Oxford back into it during the second half because it was a dangerous scoreline. They made two attacking changes and brought good players on, but we’re just pleased to come away with a win and roll on the next game.” Vassell scored twice and set up Wood for the third as Warne’s men looked lethal on the break, and

the manager was delighted with the way in which his side opened up their opponents. “We tried to exploit the space on the counter-attack and we had pace to do that. The two up front were really reliable, so we knew that if we could win the ball back and pick the right pass, more often than not we’d get in,” he added. “With that we were a constant threat and I was disappointed that we didn’t score in the second half, but overall we are really pleased with our performance against a strong team.”

MOORE PRAISES PATIENT ROVERS Darren Moore felt his side were good value for victory after beating Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League One. Goals from Ben Whiteman and Rakish Bingham secured a 2-0 victory for Rovers – their third in a row since the turn of the year. Moore said: “We felt

that we could come here and continue our momentum, and the boys did that with a really good performance. “We had to stamp our authority on the game early on and one of the most pleasing factors was that we kept going right until the end. “They got men behind

the ball and made it difficult for us but our patience paid off and we took advantage of space opening up.” The clean sheet at the Memorial Stadium was Rovers’ fourth in their past five games, and Moore says they continue to work on improving at both ends of the pitch. He added: “We’re

working hard to keep things tight at the back and I’ve said for a while that we want to be ruthless in both penalty areas. “There is a job to do with and without the ball and we continue to strive for improvements heading into the next few games.”

WHITEMAN: ROVERS DESERVED WIN Captain Ben Whiteman felt Rovers were great value for their 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League One on Saturday. Whiteman scored the opener in the 86thminute as Rovers were finally rewarded for their persistence in front of goal, with Rakish Bingham following up in added time, and the skipper believes the win at the Memorial Stadium was no less than they deserved. “First half I thought we were excellent, even without that real cutting edge, we expected them to come out the traps a lot quicker in the second half, but we got the ball around well and I felt we deserved the three points in the end,” he said. “We played some great

football at times, some of it might not have been great on the eye either but we ground out a great result, I thought we were great both on and off the ball and were good value for the win. “It’s all about momentum, once you get that it’s a good thing to have, but it was more of a relief to get the win because of how we dominated the game throughout, we left it late to get the goal but I think the celebrations showed just how much it meant to us.” Whiteman’s late goal was his fifth of the season in the league, the majority of those coming late on in the game, and he is happy to maintain the standards by leading from the front and popping up with a goal

wherever possible. “I was trying to get myself in those positions throughout the game, looking to drive into the box and the space just opened up nicely in the end for me, Brad [Halliday] put a good ball through and took the chance when it came,” he added. “It’s a good little habit to have popping up with those late goals, I’m confident in this team that I can get

forward and score goals, I’ve been able to play a little bit further up the field this season which has been good. “I’d like to add a few more to my tally too between now and the end of the season, the boys are popping up with goals all over the pitch and that can only be good for us, I just hope we can keep going and keep the standards high.”

WE EMPTIED THE TANK The praise was spread around the dressing room as Wednesday emerged from Championship leaders Leeds with a 2-0 win. A late double from Jacob Murphy and Atdhe Nuhiu did the damage as the Owls were propelled back into the play-off mix. And Garry Monk took heart from how his men left everything on the Elland Road pitch.

He said: “If we’d have lost that game, obviously we’d have been disappointed, but we gave absolutely everything so you can accept losing more in those circumstances. “But we’ve emptied the tank here, we’ve shown big hearts and a fantastic attitude and got the result. “I thought we did very well all over the pitch. You expect Leeds to come out like they did but we

coped with that and grew and grew into the game. “We came here with a game plan, the players executed it and the reward is the most important thing, which is three points. “That’s the standard we’ve set, that’s what we have spoken about as a group and these are the kind of levels we have to aim for week in and week out.”

WE’VE SHOWN WHAT WE’RE ABOUT Jacob Murphy sent the Owls on their way to a first Championship win in four by firing home at Elland Road to give the visitors a late lead. Wednesday stumbled over the festive period with three successive defeats but the Owls loanee believes that is now put to bed and everyone has seen the capabilities of the squad. And on a personal note, the victories over Brighton in the FA Cup and

Leeds at the weekend were two of Murphy’s most impressive displays in a Wednesday shirt. On his and the team’s form, he told swfc. co.uk: “I feel I am creating chances and that’s the main thing, hopefully that continues and I keep sticking the chances away. “It’s the modern day game, wingers and forwards are judged by their goals and assists

and I know it’s part and parcel. “When I’m on the pitch I will always give my all, Kads and Reachy have been really good this season, so that’s three wingers that can do a lot of damage, so I will keep plugging away. “The league is relentless, it’s unforgiving but there is a lot of experience in the squad so the boys know how to look after themselves.” He continued: “It happens in the Champi-

onship, we had three games in a week, we lost them all but have since had opportunities to put it right. “We’ve taken them and in the last week or so we have shown everyone we can.” Concluding the interview pitchside at Elland Road, he added: “The fans were incredible. It’s what it’s all about, the limbs! It’s good to see everyone going wild like that and sending them home happy.”

ASH BAKER JOINS NEWPORT COUNTY

Ash Baker has joined Newport County on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee. The defender signed for Wednesday in January 2017 and, after a successful stint in the club’s Under-23 set-up, made his senior debut on the final day of the 2017/18

campaign in the 5-1 win over Norwich. The right full back made 13 first team appearances for Wednesday and now joins League Two Newport. Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Ash for his services and wish him all the best for the future.

success away at Brighton in the FA Cup. Initial fears at The Amex were that the 32-year-old may be out for the rest of the campaign but scans have shown the extent of the damage to be less severe. Nevertheless, Fletcher will be sidelined for the next two months and Monk said: “Our initial thoughts were, when you looked at his reaction and how it was, it was very serious. “He’s had the scan and it’s good and bad news really. As I said, it looked as though it could be a really serious one but the scan has come back and structurally his knee is fine. “But he will be out for a significant period of time, roughly around eight to 10 weeks so it’s a blow for us, to lose any player is a blow but particularly your top goalscorer, who’s in such good form. “So it’s bittersweet really in the sense that

it could have been a season-ender but it’s a significant period out. “It’s always unfortunate when it’s something so innocuous, something you do thousands of times in training and hundreds of times in a game. I’ve spoken to him about it and it looks to be the way he’s landed on the other player’s foot that has left him in an awkward position. “I’ve had a good chat with him, he’s experienced, he’s a real professional and understands what he needs to do. He’ll be focused and give himself the best opportunity to be back as soon as possible. “He’s already on with his re-hab, he’s on course for having his best ever season in terms of goal tally and I think he would have smashed that with the way he was going on about his work. “He’ll still have time to beat that when he comes back.”

BOSS SIGNS NEW CONTRACT Happy New Year Blades fans... Chris Wilder has signed a new long-term contract with the club. Following negotiations with the board, the Sheffield-born manager has signed a four-anda-half year deal until the summer of 2024, with a club option for an additional year. Blades owner Prince Abdullah commented: “Chris has played an integral role in our recent and current success and we want him at the helm in the future, driving us forward, hence the new long-term contract. He is a dynamic leader, with whom the supporters connect and it is

important that we have someone of his stature leading this club on the field. January is a very important month but securing the signature of Chris was paramount and underpins all the plans we have for the club over the next few years.” Speaking ahead of the Premier League encounter with West Ham United on Friday evening, Wilder said: “Naturally, I’m delighted to sign a new deal until 2024 and commit to the club that is close to my heart. I am grateful to Prince Abdullah for taking the initiative and offering this contract, we’ve had a great few

years and hopefully we can continue the upward curve - let’s see how far we can go on this journey.” In addition, assistant manager Alan Knill has also signed a new contract. Chris and Alan arrived at Bramall Lane in May 2016 after guiding Northampton Town to promotion from League Two, and immediately sparked an upturn in fortunes for the Blades. In the first season in S2, Chris guided United to the League One title with a refreshing brand of football which saw the Blades hit 100 points and net 92 goals. With some shrewd

business in the transfer market, United were instantly established back within the second tier during their second season at the helm, but the best was yet to come. After another positive

The Blades have bolstered the development ranks, with the signing of two teenage prospects. Midfielder Connor Leak-Blunt, 17, formerly of Leeds United, arrives following a successful trial period at the SteelPhalt Academy. Meanwhile, defender Kamarl Grant, also 17, joins United from Croydon FC, having impressed when featuring as a trialist in the U23s Professional Development League win at Barnsley last month.

Supporters are advised that two extensive ground tours are now scheduled to take place in the coming weeks. The first offering sees ‘Thursday Club’ return on Thursday 23rd January, starting in the Legends of the Lane museum at 2pm. Blades fans will see a host of international caps, shirts and medals, won by some of the players who have helped us build the club we know and love today. Club Heritage Manager John Garrett will then lead a fascinating look at the club’s collection of FA Cup Final balls, prior to heading into some exclusive areas. Walk down the newly refurbished players tunnel and into the dressing-room where

During the current campaign, the Blades have continued to shine, with Chris’s approach to a first top flight season in 12 years winning many an admiring glances as United ended 2019 in the top eight.

Chris Wilder delivers his team talks and your favourite player prepares for top-flight action. From there you will head out of the tunnel and into Wilder’s technical area, before seeing the delights of the Lane from the director’s box. The boardroom is the next port of call, before things conclude in our impressive media lounge that was recently built and designed specifically for Premier League football. A camera is a must for this outing, with group bookings welcome. Should you require specific information about these tours, please email john.garrett@sufc.co.uk Meanwhile, there is also a pre-match tour of Bramall Lane planned prior to our fixture against AFC Bournemouth, commencing promptly at 11.45am from Legends of the Lane. You will then head behind the scenes, into the inner sanctum of S2 on a matchday, walking down the players tunnel and out into the dugouts. Learn some fascinating facts and figures about our famous home, the world changing events that have happened inside the stadium and of course everything you could possibly want to know about the Blades from the comfort of the directors box as the Lane prepares for Premier League action. The tour will last approximately one hour and is the perfect way to soak up the pre-match atmosphere, prior to the clash against the Cherries. Fans are politely asked to note this is NOT a ‘meet the players’ event and due to the historic content of the tour, it’s not aimed at the very youngest of our fanbase. Tickets for both tours are priced at £10 adults and £6 concessions and can be booked from the ticket office, by phoning 0114 253 7200 (option 1) or by clicking here.

Richard Stearman has departed Bramall Lane after both parties agreed to mutually terminate his contract. The agreement now allows the 32-year-old to join Championship club Huddersfield Town. The former Leicester, Wolves and Fulham ace joined the Blades in July 2017 and

made 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals in his time at the Lane. The defender famously netted the winner against Middlesborugh last season as the Blades earned promotion to the Premier League. During the current campaign, Stearman has made three appearances - all in the cup - scoring one goal.
