SHEFFIELD CITY COUNCIL LAUNCHES INITIATIVE TO REDUCE TOOTH DECAY AND OBESITY Sheffield City Council is launching a major public health initiative to help local families, schools and healthcare professionals tackle sugar. The initiative, ‘Sheffield is Sweet Enough’, aims to reduce obesity and tooth decay in children and adults over the next five years. Together with its partners – the NHS, healthcare professionals, Sheffield’s universities, Learn Sheffield, Weight Management Services, colleges, Trading Standards, and the voluntary sector – Sheffield City Council

will be sharing helpful facts, sugar swaps, tips and advice for all ages. Almost 1 in 4 children are overweight or obese when they start school in Sheffield. There are also more school children in Sheffield being admitted to hospital for painful tooth extractions than ever before. The campaign aims to provide information to local people on the effects of sugar and to give them the tools they need to make educated choices that support their family’s health. It will do this by increasing understanding of how much sugar is too much

and the impact this can have on our health. There will be a focus initially on reaching pregnant women and parents with young children and targeting areas in the city with high rates of obesity and tooth decay as early education is key to establishing healthy eating habits. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks & Leisure, said: “Sheffield has high levels of obesity and tooth decay and we see a large variation across the city. Being overweight and having a poor diet impacts on children’s physical and emotional

wellbeing and overall life chances. We want better for our children. We want to create lasting change by helping people understand how much sugar is too much and empowering them to make healthy choices. We believe that Sheffield is sweet enough and with a few small changes, we can all reduce our sugar intake, so that eventually these healthy habits become part of daily life.” Ultimately, the aim is to create a social movement in which everyone can play a part - schools, parents, healthcare professionals,

councillors, voluntary organisations, community leaders, businesses and workplaces – to tackle sugar in our environment at a local level. The campaign will invite local people and organisations to pledge what they will do to reduce the availability and accessibility of high sugar drinks and foods in the places we live, work and play. This will contribute in our efforts in making a big difference to health outcomes in Sheffield for now and for future generations. To find out more visit www. sheffieldissweetenough. org

FUNDING HELP AVAILABLE FOR LOCAL ‘GREEN’ PROJECTS Do you have a project to improve the environment but need help to get it off the ground? The Renewi (formerly Shanks) Corporate Social Responsibility Fund supports communities surrounding the award-winning waste treatment facility at Manvers with cash and/or volunteer time.

Each year four projects receive assistance from the £6,000 Fund and applications for 2020 are now invited. Community, voluntary or environmental groups, charities, not-for-profit organisations and education groups can all apply for up to £3,000 of the cash if their scheme would

benefit communities within a 3.5km (as the crow flies) of the Manvers facility. If it is further away, but still within Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham council areas, they can apply for up to £1,000. Projects can apply for 90% funding, with groups providing 10% matched funds. In addition, groups can apply for up to

30 hours per year of volunteer time to help their schemes, providing where possible they can match the volunteer hours. Last year, £3,000 was awarded to Mexborough Community Partnership to fund a project worker for a social inclusion gardening project on local allotments.

Food was grown, harvested, prepared and cooked on site. Grimethorpe Activity Zone in Barnsley, a small charity working with children and young people in a deprived community, received £1,000 to fund summer school holiday activities. Themes included healthy eating and free food was available at the sessions. Blackburn Primary School in Rotherham was awarded £1,000

to convert a disused piece of land into a nature garden for their eco club. The schools young ‘eco warriors’ took ownership of the project and learned first hand about plants and nature. The Personalisation Forum Group in Doncaster, a peer support organisation working to improve people’s mental wellbeing, received

£750 towards gardening equipment to transform an unsightly overgrown area into a small community garden growing fresh produce. And the remainder went to Mexborough Food Bank in Doncaster towards a food poverty programme. They ran grow, cook and eat sessions focusing on avoiding food

wate, and supported a ‘holiday hunger’ initiative during school holidays. More information and application forms are available on the BDR Waste Partnership website at www. bdronline.co.uk and applications should be in by Friday 14 February. Successful projects will be notified shortly after.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

My wife was disappointed to find out why my nickname in college was “The Love Machine.” I sucked at tennis. In my career as a lumberjack I cut down exactly 52,487 trees. I know because I kept a log. The world tongue-twister champion just got arrested.... I heard they’re going to give him a really tough sentence. If I have twin daughters, I’ll name one Kate. And I’ll name the other DupliKate. All my friends think I’m weird for constantly eating ham and pineapple sandwiches. But hey, that Hawaii roll. My great uncle died making butter on his farm last week. It was a really unfortunate churn of events. Me and my mates are in a band called Duvet. We’re a cover band. Did you know that 97% of the world is stupid? Luckily I’m in the other 5%. I asked 100 women which shampoo they preferred. All of them replied: “How the hell did you get in here?” I got my best friend a fridge for his birthday. I can’t wait for his face to light up when he opens it. What lies on the ground 100ft in the air? A dead centipede. My wife gave me an ultimatum. It was either her or my addiction to sweets. The decision was a piece of cake. The William Shatner wanted to start up a line of female underwear. Unfortunately Shatner Panties wasn’t the greatest brand name.

Karen said, “I am beyond excited to be going on tour with a brand new show alongside Gorka. We have been working very hard to put on a show that will leave everyone feeling all the passion, excitement and energy that we feel when we are dancing. We can’t wait to travel around the UK and to meet you all.” Born in Venezuela and having grown up in New York from the age of 10, Karen Hauer is most known for dancing on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Joining the series in 2012 she has been partnered with household names including Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, The ‘Hairy Biker’ Dave Myers, Mark Wright, Jeremy Vine, Will Young, and Sunday Brunch chef Simon Rimmer. In 2018 Karen reached the quarter-finals of the series with actor Charles Venn. Karen has an amazing presence on stage and is one of the most expressive and charismatic dancers on the current dance scene. Able to express emotion through each and every movement right through to her fingertips, Karen takes choreographed routines to new heights and she has that rare talent to attract the

eye of every audience member whenever she dances. Gorka said, “I can’t wait to get out on the road with Karen for this very exciting new tour. We are both really passionate about Latin dance, and this tour will really showcase that. We’ve worked really hard on the numbers in this show and I think everyone is going to love it. See you in 2020!” Gorka’s flair for dancing started from a very young age. Originally from Bilbao, Spain, aged 11 he attended Ballroom and Latin dance classes where he quickly excelled and became one of the top dancers representing Spain across the world. Most famously known for his appearance on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, Gorka Marquez has continuously displayed outstanding talent and charisma in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 series. His debut saw him paired with EastEnders star Tameka Empson. In 2018 he was partnered with TV star Katie Piper after having waltzed Alexandra Burke to the final the previous year.

sheffield is sweet enough - new campaign! To help make this simpler, a website Sheffield is Sweet Enough has been launched to outline the recommended daily limits and what this means for families. It contains information about the benefits of reducing the amount of sugar we eat, how much sugar there is in everyday foods and suggests ways to make simple swaps and changes. Lesson plans for schools and education resources for nurseries and community groups, such as scouts and guides, will be available to download to help children of all ages understand more about sugar and its impact. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health, said: “We all want our children to grow up happy and healthy, but from childhood to teenage years too much sugar can put them at risk of developing tooth decay and certain health conditions, including obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. We are sharing the facts on sugar, so people understand them and can make simple swaps to help their families eat or drink less sugar. A complex mix of causes lead to people being overweight or obese in Sheffield. Reducing sugar intake won’t solve this problem alone, but it will make a huge difference to many people’s health and once they start seeing the changes, they are more likely to continue making those healthier choices in life. As well limiting the amount of sugar we eat and drink, we must address the wider issues about the availability of high sugar products and the way they are advertised to children.” Speaking about the launch of the campaign, Claire Ward, from Darnall Community Nursery, added: “Sheffield’s Sweet Enough reinforces everything we teach our children in nursery about sugar and healthy eating, so we’re delighted to be part of this great campaign. We look forward to sharing the resources and information with parents and the children

Acclimed Sheffield singer Paul Pashley raised more than £2,500 for St Luke’s Hospice whenhe brought his vocal skills to the stage at the city’s Abbeydale Picture House. Paul, who has performed around the world with his popular range of Swing and Jazz standards, presented the special Abbeydale concert as a tribute to his dad Terry, who was a St Luke’s patient. The evening – which also featured Paul’s six piece band and support from singer Julian Jones - was sponsored by boutique hotel, restaurant and bar The Devonshire Arms at Middle Handley and it raised a

final total of £2,668 for St Luke’s patient care. “Following my dad’s death I made a promise to myself that I would do something for St Luke’s in his memory because the support he received was beyond anything we had ever expected.” Said Paul. “Dad had lung cancer and I remember the first time I went to see him at St Luke’s, the atmosphere was incredible, so supportive and so peaceful – there was nothing at all clinical or stressful about being there. “That’s why I wanted to give something back, so other people can experience what our family experienced.”

Around the world, the most successful countries to integrate cycling, have done so by creating separated highways to the roads. The UK has an ever-growing network of cycle highways, similar to the motorway system used by cars, making it easier to move around without relying on roads. The Sustrans National Cycle Network has a web of routes and paths across the UK and offers a great way to get some fresh air away from traffic. Many of the routes are part of the disused railway networks that once connected Britain & are rich in history. New routes are built and added to the network regularly, with over 203 miles of walking and cycling routes created nationally in 2019. Additional to the National routes are the bridleways and footpaths which connect many of the major trails. Fortunately, here in Yorkshire, we have an abundance of these, so there’s very little reason to be on roads if you don’t want to be! South Yorkshire has a great selection of local routes to and from Sheffield and surrounding areas. Information on the routes as well as jargon busting e-bike guide can be found at sheffieldcycleroutes.org/. See where you can get to at www.sustrans.org.uk for the National Cycle Network routes and for a detailed look at bridleways and paths in your area check out footpathmap.co.uk. See how far you can go without the use of roads!

TRAMLINES ANNOUNCE LINEUP FOR 2020

Tramlines, Sheffield’s biggest city-based music festival has announced the lineup for its 2020 event, taking place at the 30,000 capacity Hillsborough Park from Friday 31st July to Sunday 2nd August. Headliners have been revealed as Ian Brown, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and Madness, plus over 25 more acts have been unveiled including The Kooks, DMA’s, Pale Waves, Dizzee Rascal, The Hives, The Fratellis, La Roux, The Pigeon Detectives, Easy Life, The Snuts, The Sherlocks, Twisted Wheel, Sister Sledge, The Big Moon, Lucy Spraggan, Sundara Karma, The Magic Gang, Twin Atlantic and more. While a limited number of weekend

tickets are now available priced at £99.50 (+bf), Tramlines has for the first time released day tickets, five months ahead of the three-day event. They’re priced from £45 and can be purchased alongside other ticket options from www.tramlines.org.uk. Following its first ever sell out in 2019 and subsequently receiving the UK Festival Award for Best Metropolitan, Tramlines is one of the UK’s fastest growing festivals. It grew from humble beginnings in 2009 as a free, multi-venue, inner-city festival, to a single greenfield site that stages the biggest names in pop, rock and indie across five stages of music, alongside the best in art, comedy, performance, handpicked food and

craft ales. Watch the 2019 aftermovie here https://youtu.be/meWBk16Js4. Headliners for the 12th instalment of Tramlines on ‘Sarah Nulty’s Main Stage’ are Stone Roses frontman, Ian Brown (Friday), indierockers Catfish and the Bottlemen (Saturday) – a band who first appeared at Tramlines many moons ago as an upcoming band on one of its smallest stages, and the UK’s favourite ska outfit, Madness (Sunday). Tramlines Festival Operations Director, Timm Cleasby commented, “I’m proper excited for us to bring this line up to Sheffield. Big names for Sheffield’s biggest party. Gettin the F.E.A.R. with Ian Brown on Friday Night, right through

to Sunday Madness, It Must Be Love. With some of Yorkshire’s finest bands too, I Hate To Say I Told You So, but it’s going to be Bonkers. See you in the park.” The 2020 lineup for Tramlines is packed with some of the UK’s all-time rock and indie favourites. Appearing are poster boys of the noughties indie wave scene, The Kooks, ‘Chelsea Dagger’ indie swingers The Fratellis, the platinum selling The Pigeon Detectives, Twisted Wheel who formed at the heart of Manchester’s indie rock scene and were regularly seen supporting the likes of Oasis and Tramlines headliner himself, Ian Brown; and Glasgow rockers, Twin Atlantic who return after

their last Main Stage appearance at Tramlines in 2017. Adding an international injection to the rock offering are, from Sydney down under, the DMA’s who’ll bring rock ballads aplenty. Tramlines 2020 is also thrilled to announce that rebel pop star La Roux will appear as she gears up to release her third album ‘Supervision’ later this year. Swedish garage-punk kingpins, The Hives will also star amongst a melting pot of sounds including a return set to Tramlines from Grime MC, Dizzee Rascal, disco anthems from Sister Sledge, goth-pop from former BBC Introducing duo, Pale Waves, the Mercury Prize nominated all-girl outfit, The Big Moon, and the eclectic sounds

of Easy Life who return with their mash up of hip hop, r’n’b and jazz that wowed crowds on the Leadmill Stage at Tramlines last year. As ever, Tramlines welcomes a slew of talent from across its home city and the Yorkshire regions. The ever popular four-piece, The Sherlocks join the bill whose impressive credits include being the first unsigned band after the Arctic Monkeys to sell out the legendary independent venue, the Leadmill. The ever-cherished singer and songwriter Lucy Spraggan who’ll deliver her folk pop signature style as seen on album number five released in 2019, and on her recent quirky cover of The Proclaimers ‘500 Miles’, plus the heavy, fast-paced indie sounds

of The Reytons, the loud punk sounds of The Blinders, and Sheffield favourites the Everly Pregnant Brothers renowned for their amusing spoof numbers. Over the years Tramlines has been known for offering a platform to some of the best new and emerging talent around. 2020 is no different and ‘ones to watch’ include rising Scottish five-piece, The Snuts who’ll bring a catalogue of indie stompers, Reading quartet Sundara Karma, and hailing from Brighton, The Magic Gang and Fickle Friends who’ll deliver big melodies and progressive indie pop. As well as weekend tickets costing £99.50 and day tickets costing £45 (Friday) and £50 (Saturday and Sunday),

children’s ticket are also on sale. With a pass for 5 – 12-year olds costing just £10 and £3 for those aged 4 and under, Tramlines continues to offer some of the best value festival tickets around. This is just the first wave of talent set to perform at Tramlines 2020. Festival-goers should keep an eye out for further lineup announcements, plus further announcements from across the festival site including lineups for the comedy tent, programming for the eclectic family-friendly area ‘Into The Trees’, and the return of Speaker’s Corner. Keep up to date with all the latest news and announcements at www.facebook.com/ tramlines.

OUTREACH SCHEME INSPIRING YOUNG PEOPLE TO GO ONTO HIGHER EDUCATION REACHES NEW MILESTONE A regional outreach scheme to increase the number of teenagers from South Yorkshire going on to higher education has helped more than 15,000 so far. The Higher Education Progression Partnership South Yorkshire (HeppSY) aims to support young people most at risk of missing out on higher education. It is part of the newly launched Uni Connect programme funded by the Office for Students (OfS). As part of Uni Connect, it has now launched a regional hub to reach even more young people considering their options. Mike Garnock-Jones, Director, Higher Education Progression Partnership, said: “It’s great to have reached this major milestone to transform the career and life prospects of thousands of young people in our region who might not have otherwise gone on to consider studying a degree at college, university or as part of an apprenticeship.” He added: “We are delighted to see the HeppHub provide impartial information, advice, and guidance on all higher education opportunities to help more young people make the best choices for them individually.” The HeppHub builds on the successful partnership between Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield, which already provides impartial advice, support and online resources. One student who has benefited from the programme is Lewis Rookes, aged 17, who is studying A Levels at Thomas Rotherham College. Lewis said: “I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get into higher education and that I could never achieve the grades I needed. I still worry about it a bit but I know that I’m able and have the ability to get into university.

He explained: “Most of my family hasn’t been to university so I thought that might lock me out, but I’ve realised university is open to anyone and you don’t have to have all As, A*s. I’ve applied to a mix of universities.” Lewis continued: “Without HeppSY, and the college’s support, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to apply to universities away from home. Before HeppSY, I believed what I saw on TV shows. I thought only smart people could go to university and you’d be studying day and night with set teachers and set hours.” He added: “But actually if you apply to the right place there’s something to suit everyone and a variety of courses out there. It was the same with student finance. I was worried that I’d be in debt for the rest of my life and everyone had said that to me, but in actuality it’s only a student loan and you pay it off depending on circumstances.” HeppSY works with young people from Year 9 who live in 45 target wards in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, and parts of North East Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire

and has worked with 15,600 so far at 46 schools and colleges. The evidence shows that higher education participation of young people in these areas is both low and much lower than expected based on GCSE-level attainment. The definition of higher education includes

ANGLER’S CORNER

and reverted back to the ‘old’ mono, but would it really make a difference, or was I just on a poor run? with Clint Walker I returned to a shallow estate lake for Confidence is everything in fishing. If you another day session, with both spools now aren’t confident in your methods or your replaced and my confidence somewhat tackle, then you’re not fishing effectively, restored. I’ve been fishing legered Baitbox and your catch rates will plummet. I deadbaits during my barren spell, each know, I’ve changed something recently, anchored off a lead held on a short Pikepro fully expecting to take my fishing to buoyant leger stem to keep the line out of the next level, only to find crushing any bottom debris, stopped by a soft bead disappointment! After changing my at the trace which held a pair of trebles. It’s tactics, I’ve suffered a run of at least six not complicated stuff, but I’m a big believer blank sessions, culminating this week in another visit to one of my preferred big pike in finding the fish to put the bait in front of them, rather than make things complex and waters, Astbury Mere in Cheshire. I accept hope for the best. If you put a pie in front that it’s a tough venue and I can never of me, I’ll eat it, but if I can’t see it, then I expect to catch, but I would reasonably won’t! You can only catch fish if you’re in expect at least some interest, and there has the right place and they are feeding… it’s been none. What finished me off was to that simple. be asked to reel in to visit the next peg to On arrival, another angler held the gate photograph an immaculate 21lb pike for a very happy chap who had kept up his run of open for me as I pushed my barrow up the decent fish; if he was catching, why wasn’t track. I’d persevered, but tightened into the bobbins and the first brew after each fruitless session, my confidence of the day was poured; bliss. plummeted, and my catch rate stuttered… As a supported angler, (and columnist) I’m Despite the weather forecast and that fact that it is January, it was a beautiful day. under some pressure to provide images The sun peeped over the far bank trees, and and copy to my sponsors to maintain my agreements, so something had to change the temperature climbed enough for me to and fast! I swapped the spools on my reels sit comfortably within the confines of my

padded pike cradle next to the rods. The tea steamed nicely in the morning air, and as it brewed, my right-hand alarm gave a couple of bleeps… I watched like a hawk but could detect no trembling rod tip or movement of the line, so after a minute or two retrieved the bait to check it. There wasn’t a mark on it, but as I turned it to examine it further, the other bait was taken! The bobbin fell away and line spun off the spool as I picked up the rod. Winding down to solid resistance is always a thrill and even though it wasn’t a big pike, barely approaching double figures, it was a pleasing result after several blanks! It was quickly unhooked, (in fact the trebles fell out in the net) photographed as proof and returned before both baits were despatched again. This time I had to sit for an hour before a savage take twisted the rod tip, but that fish dropped the bait, and it had to be reset. I had time to warm a mess tin of ‘all day breakfast’ before the next indication, a slow steady pull which bought a second small pike to the net which was also quickly returned. This one had

also picked up the smelt, so a new one was mounted on the trebles and it was soon back in the water. I wasn’t even able to reset the bobbin before the alarm squealed, and a third fish was hooked. I lost this one (a monster obviously!) after playing it for a minute, the rod tip springing back as the hooks were thrown by a fish I hadn’t even seen, but at least I was getting some action at last! Later in the morning, a fifth and final run saw another small pike arrive kicking at the waiting net, but the afternoon which followed was quiet, allowing me to enjoy my surroundings and watch the Greylags Geese clatter up the lake, the Grebes hunting in the shallows and espy nuthatches and treecreepers furtively flit around the tree trunks behind me as the sun warmed me under the brolly. I’m sure I could hear a woodpecker too, and watched as pheasants and buzzards flew across the water… this estate lake is without doubt one of my favourite venues, regardless of the time of year, and sometimes, it’s a privilege to just sit and watch the world go by with a mug of tea… I think I’ve proved my point (to myself anyway) that a small change can mean significant difference, five runs after numerous barren sessions has convinced me that the change wasn’t necessarily for the better; so the moral of the story is, if it isn’t broke don’t fix it! Tight lines!

THREE POINTS THE KEY AS MILLERS GRIND OUT HOME WIN - WARNE Rotherham United manager Paul Warne assessed his side’s display after a fine 3-2 win this afternoon. The Millers made it five home league wins on the spin as Burton Albion were the latest victims at AESSEAL New York Stadium. “I can come up with all sorts of clichés about how good teams win when they play poorly, but I didn’t think we were very good today,” said Warne. “We looked jaded. It’s on me, I probably

should have made changes but they were so good Tuesday night. It’s difficult to change after a great performance. We just looked a bit emotionally drained, I think. I wasn’t best pleased with it but to come out with three points is testament to the lads. “He made some saves, as did theirs to be fair. We created enough opportunities to win the game today but we conceded enough opportunities to lose the game. If you’re a neutral you’d have loved it. On another

day, we could have won comfortably or took a good beating. I’m pleased we’ve won when we’ve played bad and it’s always easy to learn after a victory. “We need to freshen them up for next week because that level of performance won’t get us where we want to be.” Michael Smith’s double sandwiched Jamie Murphy’s opener but the Brewers levelled through Oliver Sarkic. However, substitute Freddie Ladapo had the last say with a well-taken winner on his birthday. “The birthday boy got the winning goal,” continued Warne. “I said to him before that that would happen. He’s the happiest lad in the dressing room. There is some tired legs, I think. Last week took a lot out of a couple of

players and it’s been an emotional week for us all. It’s been exhausting and maybe I didn’t have my finger on the pulse as much as normal. “I’ll take a bit of responsibility but I thought the fans stayed with the team really well today, which I really appreciate because if that had been earlier in the season when we’d performed like that it would have been a different sort of atmosphere. “The lads gave everything, physically, but we weren’t at our sharp best today. “We’ve got 15 games potentially left. It’s nice to be top of the league but there are a couple of teams with games in hand. All we can do is try win our games and have a level of performance which, at times, wasn’t there today.”

instinctive finish from Niall Ennis early in the second half, Moore’s side were unable to complete the comeback. “I’m disappointed and the boys are too because we’ve lost Darren Moore was the game from two left disappointed set-plays,” he said. as his team came away from Highbury “I didn’t think Fleetwood created Stadium empty handed on Saturday. much in the game, Goals from set pieces and the intensity of our game was for Ched Evans and excellent, but two setHarry Souttar put plays have done us. Fleetwood Town We’ll look at where ahead and, while we went wrong and Rovers did pull one how we went wrong back through an – but we’ll also look

at where we showed a lot of impetus but didn’t quite get the final touch.” Once they had the lead, the hosts began to slow the game up which resulted in a yellow card for their goalkeeper Alex Cairnsand five additional minutes at the end of the game - Moore believes the tactics show the respect Fleetwood had for his team. “I thought they paid us a lot of respect in terms of how they went about the game,” he added.

“It was a stop-start game. I thought they looked to spoil the it with little free-kicks and fouls, they were taking as much time as they could out of the game. “The way they controlled and managed the game in terms of free-kicks and pettiness is a credit to them. We wanted it to flow more and when we did get the ball I thought we played through them, around them and 75% of the balls were good up until their final third.”

me feel wanted and I want to repay that faith in him, I want to be involved and I feel I’m ready to play more - I have to wait for him to pick me but I’m excited to get going.” Okenabirhie was unable to help Rovers grab a late equaliser as they lost 2-1 at Highbury Stadium in Sky Bet League One, but the new Rovers No.9 is keen to make sure things are put right at Tranmere on Tuesday night. “We were all disappointed to lose, of course, I don’t feel like

there was that much in the game but hopefully on Tuesday we can put it right,” he added. “I was keen to come on and help the team, I thought we could’ve got more out of the second half and on another day we probably would have “We scored a good goal but they managed to get themselves in front and it was too much in the end. On Tuesday we have to look to go again, we have to look forward and move on quickly.”

make a big impact in South Yorkshire after making his debut. “It was a good feeling to get on the pitch, I’m looking forward to the rest of the season now and contributing to the team - I’m settled and I’m looking forward to getting to work on the pitch,” he said. “I’m ready to get going as a Rovers player, I’m here to do well and this was the only place I wanted to come. LOCAL FOOTBALL County Senior Leagues with Michael Clarke

It was once again a busy weekend in the County Senior League. Although there were only nine league games, there was also a whole host of Brian and Judith Bradley Memorial Trophy and League Cup games. League Cup Quarter Finals There were no surprises in the Quarter finals of the League Cup. Premier Division leaders Swinton Athletic beat Dodworth Miners Welfare 3-1 away from home. The goals for Swinton came from Samuel Green, Justin Greenwood and Enzo Guarini. Last year’s League Cup winners booked their place in the Semi Finals with a 5-1 win over Frecheville CA at Woolley Miners Welfare. Wombwell Main of the Premier Division beat Division One’s Handsworth FC Reserves 6-1 at Oliver’s Mount. There was just one goal at Sheerien Park, where Premier Division high-flyers AFC Penistone Church beat Athersley Recreation Reserves. Brian and Judith Bradley Memorial Trophy There were a mixture of 2nd Round and Quarter Final games played in the Brian and Judith Bradley Memorial Trophy on Saturday. In the Quarter Finals, penalties were needed to split Kinsley Boys of Division Two and Denaby Main of Division One at the Kinsley Timber Stadium. 0-0 after 120 minutes, Denaby were 4-3 winners on penalties. Penalties were also needed at South Kirkby Miners Welfare, where a 2nd Division team, South Elmsall United Service did beat a Division One side (South Kirkby Colliery). 1-1 after extra time, but South Elmsall won the subsequent penalty shootout 5-4. MONK PLEASED WITH DOUBLE IMPACT A goalless draw it may have been but Garry Monk took the positives from a low-key clash with Millwall at Hillsborough. And not least the impact of substitutes Fernando Forestieri and debutant Alessio Da Cruz, who warmed a freezing S6 afternoon. Monk said: “It was much better and first and foremost it had to be, that was the first ask. “It wasn’t the three

points we wanted but we got one point from an even game and it’s a platform to build on. “I thought we were much better in the second half and the two substitutes made a real impact. “They both looked very lively, playing with pace and purpose, they changed the tempo of the game. “All you can ask of your substitutes is to have an impact and they did. “It’s good to have

GALVIN SIGNS OWLS CONTRACT Young full back Ryan Galvin has signed a professional contract with the Owls following a successful trial period with Wednesday’s Under23s. The 18-year-old featured for the Owls Development Squad against Hull on Friday and now signs permanently with the club. Predominantly a left sided full-back, Galvin was previously on professional terms with Wigan before his switch to S6. Galvin said: “I’m over the moon if I’m honest. “I’m just so glad I’ve been given the opportunity to come here. “When I found out I was given the contract after my trial I couldn’t stop smiling! “I want to do well for the Under-23s and see what opportunities come from there. “Hopefully one day I’ll be with the first team, but it’s one step at a time.”

CAPITAL SUCCESS FOR BLADES United remained unbeaten in the capital after Vicente Guaita’s own goal gave the Blades a 1-0 success against Crystal Palace. In a tight encounter it was the ‘keeper’s blunder which settled the contest in the second half as he carried Ollie Norwood’s corner over his own line under no pressure. The Blades had the better of the chances and stifled any late Palace pressure to once again record a clean sheet and complete a league double over the Eagles. Blades boss Wilder handed record signing Sander Berge a full debut after the Norwegian international joined the Blades on Thursday. Berge was part of just one change from the last league outing against Manchester City after the ex-Genk ace replaced Mo Bešić. The opening 10 minutes were largely uneventful, but United almost created an opportunity when a deep cross was headed

into a good area by Oli McBurnie but it was just too high for Berge who made a late break into the box. Berge was almost presented with another opportunity on 12 minutes. George Baldock made progress down the right, cutting back inside to buy himself some space. He rolled his pass back to Norwood whose low cross was controlled by McBurnie into the path of Berge, but he was quickly shut down as he was about to shoot. Baldock was the first into the book on 18 minutes when he pulled back Wilfried Zaha, and shortly after the winger cut a low cross into the area which was cleared only as far as Luka Milivojevic, but the Palace midfielder smashed his effort over the bar. James Tomkins was the first Palace player into the book after he chopped down John Fleck. Shortly after Palace created the first half-chance when a bursting run from Jordan Ayew created an opening

for Christian Benteke, but the ex-Liverpool striker hammered his effort into the side netting. James McArthur’s effort from distance was easily held by Henderson, before Billy Sharp collided with Tomkins which resulted in a VAR referral for foul play which was quickly waved away. On 35 minutes there was a let off for Baldock as he committed another foul on Zaha. Despite fury in the stands, referee Andy Madley kept his cards in his pocket despite some protests from the hosts. Zaha continued to be a thorn in United’s side, this time sticking in a dangerous early low cross right along the United six-yard area but there was no touch as Henderson watched it behind for a goal kick. At the start of the second half Fleck saw a long-range effort blocked by Tomkins whilst Benteke scuffed a low shot straight at Henderson. With United just starting to step up to

another level, there was a helping hand from the Palace ‘keeper as the Blades took lead on 58 minutes. After some good combination play between McBurnie, Fleck and Sharp, the latter’s cross from the by-line was deflected behind off a Palace defender. The resulting Norwood corner looked right down the throat of GUAITA, but the stopper dropped the ball over his line much to United’s delight. Guaita was quickly called into action again as Baldock was felled close to the area. Norwood stepped forward to curl an effort over the wall, but this time the Palace ‘keeper clawed the ball to safety. Henderson was called into action for the first time as Zaha pulled a low cross back for James McCarthy to shoot, but his effort was parried by the United custodian. Boss Wilder freshened up his ranks by bringing on Lys Mousset for Sharp, and shortly after John

Lundstram came on for Berge. There was drama on 72 minutes when Joel Ward was handed a straight red for a challenge on Enda Stevens. After the decision went to VAR, referee Madley went to the pitch side screen and downgraded his decision to a yellow. Inside the final 10 minutes and United created a wonderful opportunity to double the advantage. It was all about Stevens who surged forward before playing a neat onetwo with Mousset to put him clear on goal, but his effort with the outside of his left boot was saved one-handed

by Guaita diving to his left.

Stevens looked a good bet to score again with two minutes remaining. As Mousset took aim from the edge of the area, his effort took a wicked deflection re-bounding kindly into the path of the unmarked Irishman, but he turned his volley wide of the near post. Wilder’s side comfortably saw out any late pressure, which included six minutes of stoppage time, to celebrate yet another away day success.

DUFFY MAKES DUTCH SWITCH Mark Duffy has been recalled from his loan spell at Championship side Stoke City, and will now join Dutch Eredivisie side ADO Den Haag in a similar deal. Duffy has made nine appearances for the Potters in all competitions

since moving to the bet365 Stadium in August, and will now spend the rest of the campaign on loan with Alan Pardew’s side. Signed in the summer of 2016, the 34-yearold has made 121 appearances for the Blades, scoring 15 times.
