SHEFFIELD ARENA TO INVEST MORE THAN £1.5M IN INFRASTRUCTURE AND SAFETY Over £1.5m investment has been announced for the FlyDSA Arena to guarantee that customers, event organisers & promoters have the latest venue facilities, ensuring the Arena continues to play a crucial role in promoting Sheffield across the country. The FlyDSA Arena will see major infrastructure development including a new ice plant, electrical works, dressing room refurbishment and further improvements in its counter terrorism
measures. Working closely with Sheffield City Council, Sheffield City Trust, the not-forprofit organisation that operates the FlyDSA Arena, reinvests all profits back into its facilities and services, benefitting the city of Sheffield. Home to the Sheffield Steelers, the new ice-plant will be installed during the ice hockey close season, ready for the start of the 2020/21 season in August. Replacing the original 30-year old equipment underlines
Sheffield City Trust’s commitment to sustainability. The new equipment and associated electrical work will provide a more environmentally-friendly, efficient performance; reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions as well as providing better quality ice for ice-hockey and touring shows, such as Disney on Ice. Extra security measures will also be installed at the venue following a comprehensive counter terrorism survey to
ensure the Arena remains at the forefront of safety and security. This investment comes following news that the FlyDSA Arena is in the Top 100 Arenas worldwide. Industry publication Pollstar released figures for 2019 showing the FlyDSA Arena is the 65th busiest Arena in the World and 7th busiest in the UK. Head of SIVLive Dominic Stokes said: “The history and heritage of this amazing venue is what makes it so special. With the
support of Sheffield City Council, the investment in the FlyDSA Arena will ensure it remains one of the best multifunctional spaces in the region, promoting our great city and supporting Sheffield City Trust’s aim of improving the health & wellbeing of the people of Sheffield. The Sheffield Steelers have been a revelation this year with fantastic performances on the ice and phenomenal support and attendances from the fans. Investing in our infrastructure ensures our back of house experience continues to improve for promoters, acts and event organisers ensuring Sheffield remains at the forefront of the industry.”

Other exhibitions can be found in Stephenson’s Discovery Centre and the
Derby Assembly Rooms, and if you want to see tramcar preservation and maintenance at work, head to the Workshop Viewing Gallery. There are picnic areas and indoor and outdoor play areas to keep the children entertained. For a spot of retail therapy, The Forge Gift Shop offers mementoes of your visit and the traditional sweet shop enables you to by your old favourites by the quarter. Common sense is like deodorant. Those who need it never use it. I just quit my job at the helium factory. I won’t be spoken to in that tone. At the office, the nickname that my coworkers gave me is ‘Mr. Compromise”. It isn’t my first choice, but I can live with it. Did you hear about the man who fell into the upholstery machine? He’s fully recovered. My Dad told me he always struggled with three subjects in school. Maths, and he couldn’t remember the other one. Went to the chippy the other day, I asked “Do you do fish cakes?” “Yep we do.” “Good cos it’s his birthday tomorrow.”

SHEFFIELD WINS ‘BEST OVERALL SCHEME’ IN NATIONAL BEST BAR NONE AWARDS
Sheffield’s Best Bar None (BBN) scheme has scooped the top prize in the national Best Bar None Awards. Sheffield BBN was voted ‘Best Overall Scheme’ in England and Wales, receiving the winning trophy at a prestigious ceremony held in the House of Lords earlier this month. Best Bar None is a Home Office-backed scheme that sees the alcohol industry working collaboratively with local authorities and the police to promote responsible drinking and higher professional licensing standards in bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants. The award for Best
Overall Scheme is presented to the regional BBN scheme that has had the biggest overall impact in its community in the last 12 months. Last year Sheffield was ‘Highly Commended’ after narrowly missing out to Plymouth, but this year the region came out top, beating the two other finalists, Tower Hamlets and Torbay. Sheffield is one of the UK’s longest running and most successful Best Bar None schemes and over the last year, the city has continued to be at the forefront of innovation and good practice. The scheme was integral in the development of a Best Bar None app, which
shows which venues in the city have passed the stringent assessment to become Best Bar None accredited. Described as ‘the one-stop guide to a safe night’ and ‘a must for new students and visitors to the city’, the app also offers health, safety and transport advice relevant to Sheffield and has subsequently been rolled out across seven other regions. Sheffield BBN also produced a film to promote “Ask for Angela”, a public safety initiative which enables customers who feel unsafe or threated on a night out to discreetly ask staff for help. The film, which is used for staff training and to
educate members of the public, features staff from Sheffield bars and clubs describing how the initiative has helped vulnerable customers. Tracey Ford, Scheme Coordinator for Sheffield, said: “We are absolutely over the moon to have been recognised for having the Best Overall Scheme, and so proud to receive it on behalf of all the licensed premises in Sheffield, as well as all of our stakeholders who have helped us to sustain the scheme over the past eleven years. “We have a track record of asking, listening and then delivering initiatives that address issues in the wider community.

We also make a point of sharing our ideas, experiences and new initiatives with other schemes across the country. We have worked hard to integrate Best Bar None into Sheffield’s night-time economy and also to generate public awareness about the scheme. I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of Sheffield Best Bar None, we are all so pleased that our efforts have been recognised nationally.” Lord Smith of Hindhead, Philip Smith, Chairman of Best Bar None, said: “The national awards recognise and reward schemes for their commitment to Best
Bar None and highlight their efforts to make towns and cities across the country safer and more desirable places to visit. “All of the finalists have done incredibly well to make the shortlist, but Sheffield Best Bar None stood
out in the eyes of the judges as being thoroughly deserving of this award. The team continues to maximise its impact on the local community and maintain strong and proactive relationships with licensees, the police and local authorities. My congratulations go to all of those involved.” Best Bar None has been running for more than 16 years and there are currently active schemes encompassing
hundreds of licensed premises over 70 towns and cities in England and Wales, as well as the new Central Scheme, which provides Best Bar None accreditation for businesses which are not currently located where a scheme is in place. Premises are audited by trained assessors for operational standards, policies and procedures, as well as the education and training of staff.

APPRENTICESHIPS: BE INSPIRED 2020 Sheffield City Council is hosting its annual careers fair, this March, to enable employers to meet school students completing their GCSEs or A levels this year who are interested in pursuing the apprenticeship career route. At this year’s fair, sponsored by utilities provider ENGIE, employers will be
able to meet around 1,000 students from across Sheffield City Region, who will be coming to discuss apprenticeships, distribute their CVs and apply for upcoming vacancies. Last year, over 150 vacancies – ranging from Intermediate to Degree level apprenticeships – were filled by 16-18 yearolds as a direct result
of attending the fair. Kerri White, Social Value Officer from ENGIE said about last year’s event: “We enjoyed a great day at ‘Apprenticeships: Be Inspired’, meeting some positive and driven students. There was a steady flow of students visiting our stand, and great timescaling between the schools. We strongly support Opportunity
Sheffield and will continue to attend the event in future.” Rick Franckeiss, Training Manager, Sheffield Forgemasters : “‘Apprenticeships: Be Inspired’ provides us with an opportunity to meet up with young potentials who might be interested in engineering. This event is targeted at the age group we particularly want to hit, and a lot of the learners are interested in our sector. It’s well-targeted – it’s exactly what we want.” Councillor Abtisam Mohamed, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “This event links young people to businesses from across the region, to help them get a head start in their chosen career and find out more about the world of work. It’s also a great chance for employers to meet talented and

enthusiastic young people currently considering their career options. “Young people have so much to offer, as have local businesses of all sizes and in all sectors, so we are looking forward to seeing a packed event full of people building working relationships for the future.” ‘Apprenticeships: Be Inspired’ welcomes employers from a broad range of industry sectors, including –manufacturing, engineering, construction, professional services, IT, retail, health and childcare. Thanks to the event’s sponsor ENGIE, there is no charge for exhibiting employers, however spaces are strictly limited and will be allocated on a firstcome, first-served basis. Attendance provides a fantastic opportunity
for employers meet and engage with Year 11-13 students as they select their Post-16 or Post-18 pathway for 2020-21

I quickly grasped the front edge of the brolly and tried to hold it down, but in an explosion of shattered fibreglass and rendered nylon, the ribs ruptured and snapped sending sharp shards towards the back of my head as the struts ripped free of twisted metal wire at the top of the brolly and draped the soaking fabric around me… When I finally managed to free myself of the flapping shambles, I looked at the split ribs, torn material and bent pole and realised that it was unsalvageable mess. It was still teeming with rain and the rest of my kit was quickly becoming sodden, so I quickly packed up the barrow, slung the ruined brolly on top and trudged back to the car park; not the best of starts to a new campaign! Of course, as soon as I got back to the van, the rain stopped, the skies cleared, and the wind dropped...typical! I decided to break out my Deeper Chirp sonar and instead of fishing I spent the next two hours comprehensively mapping the lake, so the day wasn’t completely wasted. I noted all the depths and likely hot spots to share with club members on our Facebook page, and was delighted to find a huge shoal of tightly packed fish which appeared to be big bream, but I’ll keep that hotspot to myself… I might let slip at the next party, but you’ll have to be there to find out more!

WE IMPROVED AS THE GAME WENT ON Millers boss Paul Warne admitted that his side improved as the night went on during their narrow victory over Lincoln City, as they stretched their lead at the summit of the Sky Bet League One standings to six points. Matt Crooks was the Rotherham hero, as his well-taken secondhalf header proved the difference between the sides, as the Millers earned their eighth victory in nine games. However, Warne’s side were indebted
to Danish ‘keeper Daniel Iversen, who produced a couple of timely saves, either side of the interval, to preserve their slender advantage. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne was delighted that his side maintained their winning ways despite not being at their flowing best at the LNER Stadium. “It was mixed, but to win a game of football is great news. We were much better in the second half than we were in the first half,” Warne

they could not find the goal. “We look at it as two points dropped,” he said. “We had enough chances to win the game and get the second goal and we didn’t do it. “We had a good start to the game and in the first ten of fifteen minutes we had Rochdale on the backfoot but didn’t really capitalise on it. admitted. “I don’t think we played the conditions as well as they did in the first half. The only disappointment is they created a couple of chances and we rode our luck a little bit, but overall I’m pretty pleased. “We broke on the break really well in the second half and on another night, we may have made it a little more comfortable.” Warne was quick to praise the battling qualities of his Millers team, who were able to lay down a marker to the rest of the League One promotion challenges, by earning a vital victory, ahead of the Saturday fixtures. With a large travelling contingent heading back to South Yorkshire in jovial mood, Warne admitted that his side are now handily placed for a
promotion tilt, as they look to return to the Championship at the first time of asking. “Lincoln are a really good team at home. They have a better record than us. They play and cause your problems, so to get the win is great for us.” Warne added. “It’s a full house, so to get a win against a team, who are fired up playing the top of the table, is good for us. “It’s all about winning football matches, so for us to win and get a weekend off is great. “I saw loads of Rotherham fans, in the city today. For them to make the effort on a Friday is appreciated. We did not play our best but the fans want to see you win and they left the ground in good voice.”
petered out.” Rovers probably should have been awarded a penalty in the final moments of the match when Brad Halliday was dragged to the floor by his shirt in the Rochdale box, but Moore does not want his team to be in a position where they are relying on refereeing decisions. “It was a penalty, but I don’t want to rely on that for us to win a game,” he added. “Everybody in the ground felt it was a penalty. He’s pulled
him back, but the referee hasn’t given it. It was frustrating but that’s part and parcel of the game. That was our opportunity to go and claim the three points, but we have to move on. “I don’t want to wait on a referee’s decision to win the game. I thought we had enough chances to win the game ourselves on Saturday. We had the better chances and goalscoring opportunities, we just didn’t get the final touch on the ball.”
the possession, but we’ve had the better chances and we’re all disappointed we’ve not been able to make them count.” Saturday’s game with Rochdale saw Jacob Ramsey and Fejiri Okenabirhie make their home debuts after they got goals at Tranmere in midweek, and Whiteman believes all January signings are looking to make a big impact over the next few weeks. “The new lads have come in and really freshened things up and that’s clear to
see, the lads that have come here have all been first class and had an impact already,” he added. “Jacob’s come in and scored two, he did well here, Devante’s had two good games this week, and Fej’s come on and looked a threat so they are just what we’ve needed really. “We have another game coming up and they’ll be looking to make an impact I’m sure, we’re all focused on that, we’re going in to win the game and we want to make sure we do that.”

MONK REFLECTS ON BARNSLEY DRAW From a game that could have gone either way, Garry Monk said both sides might have taken the points. The Owls took the lead through debutant Josh Windass but Cauley Woodrow promptly levelled. And although chances were few at both ends, when they did arrive neither goalkeeper was truly troubled. Monk said: “It was a battle that we were expecting and I think with a little more
composure we could have taken more from the game. “We defended well and countered with threat but that composure you need was just a little lacking. “Barnsley are fighting for their lives down there and there are no easy games in this division regardless. “I don’t know what their manager has said yet but I’m sure he will agree that they could have won the game and so could we.”
FLETCHER ON THE RIGHT PATH
look, that happens. “We have tried to adapt with it and everyone that has come in and given their best. “It was an area we needed to strengthen anyway but then the injury to Fletch made it more important to try and find that quality that can help in that area. “We’ve managed to do that and hopefully
Garry Monk has issued a positive update on striker Steven Fletcher. The club’s top scorer sustained an unfortunate knee injury in last month’s FA Cup victory over Brighton. It was feared the damage could be more serious but Fletcher’s so far successful rehabilitation has provided a boost as Monk explained: “Fletcher is doing fantastic. “He was well on his way to having his most successful season but
that will give us good impetus and we’ll see that in the coming games.” The aim is to have Fletcher back in contention this season and for the striker to pick up where he left off. Monk added: “Hopefully he’ll be back at the start of March. “He is doing really well in his
rehabilitation, we can’t put a specific date on it but we have been told, speaking with the medical department, around the start of March. “Whether that be the first or second week, it’s a lot brighter than we originally thought and hopefully he’ll come back and play a part this season.”

SUPER SHAY! Young Wednesdayite Shay O’Grady completed a charitable triathlon last Saturday, raising over £10,000 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The nine-year-old walked to Oakwell from Hillsborough ahead of the Owls’ 1-1 draw with Barnsley, before cycling back to finish his triathlon. Shay also swam 240 lengths in the months previous, all to raise funds for a cause very close to his heart. Shay’s cousin Evie is a patient at Bluebell Wood, who provide palliative care for young people and support for their families. The organisation needs £13,325 a day to keep its doors open and relies on the passionate support of people like Shay, and the generosity of those who donate funds. The youngster’s original target was £1,000 but after months of hard work he managed to smash his goal by raising more than ten times this amount! It’s not the first time Shay has supported Bluebell Wood, last season the young Owl walked from the hospice to Hillsborough, raising an initial £4,000, which was doubled and rounded up to £10,000 by Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri. After completing his latest brilliant challenge, Shay said: “I feel really proud of myself! “I couldn’t have done it without the support of everyone, my family, locals teams Handsworth, Wisewood, Thorncliffe and Young Owls, and all the support from Wednesday fans has been amazing. “I told Evie what we’ve done and she was just laughing which was really nice.” Shay’s dad Jason added: “The Wednesday fans on Saturday were unbelievable with the amount of support they gave him. “It really makes you proud to be a Wednesdayite.” Despite only finishing his triathlon on Saturday, Shay is wasting no time in planning his next charitable endeavour! He added: “I already started planning my next challenge on the bike on the way back from Barnsley!” Safe to say Shay has earned a well-deserved rest in the meantime. Fantastic work, Shay!

BLADES STORM PAST CHERRIES United will head into the one-week winter break in fifth position the Premier League, following Sunday’s success over Bournemouth at the Lane. The Blades, courtesy of goals from Billy Sharp and substitute John Lundstram, came from behind to deservedly beat Eddie Howe’s side in an entertaining clash at a very soggy S2. For clash against the Cherries, boss Wilder named the starting XI which claimed all three points against Crystal Palace. Deadline day signing Retsos was named on the bench and joined by the fit-again McGoldrick. Inside two minutes United were on the front foot. O’Connell’s ball down the left channel found McBurnie, he intelligently cut the ball back for Fleck, but his goal bound effort was blocked by Bournemouth skipper Francis. But the visitors themselves threatened a couple
of time in quick succession. Basham and Baldock halted the progress of Fraser, before Harry Wilson headed wide from a left-wing cross. On 11 minutes, Gosling drew a foul from Basham on the left and from the resulting freekick, Callum Wilson screwed a left-footed effort inches wide of Henderson’s far post. But two minutes later, the visitors did take the lead. Harry Wilson’s initial effort effort from Rico’s cross was blocked, but on the rebound CALLUM WILSON fired into the roof of the net giving Henderson no chance. United’s response was almost instant, but after Fleck and McBurnie had combined to release Stevens on the left, Sharp’s effort at the back post hit the side netting, with Ramsdale scrambling across his line. As the half progressed, the Blades continued to try and push for an equaliser, but after
Sharp and McBurnie had combined to win a corner, O’Connell headed over after Egan had won the first header at the back post. The wet conditions were making defending tricky and McBurnie almost profited from a slip from Francis, but under pressure from Ake, his effort saved by Ramsdale. Stevens was booked despite appearing to win the ball in a challenge with Harry Wilson, a decision that wasn’t well received by the majority inside the Lane. Right on the stroke of half-time, United came close twice in less than a minute. Norwood saw a half volley diverted inches wide by Ake, before McBurnie forced a save from Ramsdale with a header from Fleck’s corner. Two more corners followed before the break and from the second of those, United levelled. Fleck’s deep delivery was kept alive by Berge, Ramsdale
failed to connect with a punch, Stevens teed up Egan who saw his effort blocked on the line, but SHARP wasn’t to be denied from close-range. The start of the second period saw United forcing the issue. Henderson’s long kick forward was flicked on by McBurnie, but Ramsdale was just about equal to Sharp’s low effort. Tempers almost boiled over on the touchline following a challenge between Egan and Gosling. Following words and a tussle, Surman and Blades boss Wilder were cautioned by referee Moss. On the hour, Bournemouth had their first attempt since the break, but Ake’s shot on the turn was high and wide, after the visitors had applied some pressure from a corner. Ten minutes later, only the brilliance of Henderson kept the scores level, as he denied Fraser from inside the penalty

after good work by the two Wilsons. There were 16 minutes remaining when Sharp was replaced by former Bournemouth man Mousset and the substitute almost had an immediate impact after the Cherries failed to clear Baldock’s low cross, but his shot was blocked by Ake from very close range. But in the 84th minute United did hit the front at the Kop end. Stevens freed Mousset down the left channel, he picked out the run of LUNDSTRAM, who controlled with one foot and slotted
the ball past Ramsdale before the goalkeeper could adjust his feet. The clock was ticking in United’s favour, but Mousset was carded for a foul on Billing and from the resulting free-kick, Henderson could only punch clear, before Mousset cleared over his own crossbar to concede a corner, from which Ake headed inches wide from closerange. Four minutes added time were signalled and United safely negotiated them to claim another three Premier League points at Bramall Lane.
FURTHER TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED Due to high demand, the club are delighted to confirm two dates for the ever popular ‘Thursday club’ for later this month. On the 13th and 20th February, the tour will begin in Legends of the Lane, before supporters get the chance to walk down the players tunnel and into the first team dressing room. Fans will also get the chance to go pitchside, stand in Chris Wilder’s technical area and get a briefing in the directors box, before enjoying an exclusive tour of United’s media areas, which were substantially revamped last summer ahead of returning to the Premier League. This aforementioned tour is more extensive in depth and duration than the matchday offering owing to less restrictions behind the scenes. Meanwhile, there will be a pre-match ground tour ahead of the fixture against
Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday 22nd February, beginning at 12.50pm. This tour, which lastly an hour, also commences in Legends of the Lane, prior to supporters enjoying a unique look behind the scenes as the Lane gets ready to host Graham Potter’s Seagulls, prior to finishing in our fabulous museum, where numerous items of memorabilia will be proudly on display. Cameras are recommended for both tours, although supporters are politely advised to note that neither are ‘meet the player’ opportunities and due to the length and content, are not aimed at our very youngest of Blades. Tickets for both are priced at £10 adults and £6 concessions and can be booked in person at the ticket office or online at tickets.sufc.co.uk
