FESTIVAL OF THE OUTDOORS RETURNS TO SHEFFIELD Sheffield is set to showcase the strength and breadth of its outdoor communities once again, when The Festival of the Outdoors returns in March 2020, with another month-long celebration promoting fun, adventure and participation for all. Following its inaugural year in 2019, the city’s outdoor organisations, groups, clubs and businesses are coming together again to offer a unique festival programme of over 100 events, with everything from ‘come-and-try’ taster sessions, demos, rides, runs and urban
paddleboarding to guided walks and conservation. Headline events for the festival include the Rab Climbing Works International Festival, The Magnificent Seven hill climb challenge, The Big Running Weekend and Sheffield Adventure Film Festival. South Yorkshire Orienteers will also help kick-start the festival when they host a national orienteering race out at Burbage on Sunday 1 March. A new addition for 2020 and one of Sheffield’s biggest major events, the Asda Foundation Sheffield Half Marathon has also come on board to become part of the
Festival of the Outdoors this year. Sheffield’s unique cycling event The Magnificent Seven returns for its fifth outing, further cementing itself as one of the toughest cycling challenges in the UK. Taking place Sunday 15 March, the 2020 event features three new climbs at Briers House Lane, Ivy Park Road and Burnt Hill, inviting spectators from the local community and beyond to cheer on the riders. Now in its 15th year, Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF) will once again be bringing the wild outdoors into the heart of the city

centre with a three day programme of more than 100 of the latest outdoor adventure films, taking place at the Showroom Cinema 20 – 22 March. The festival is once again presented in association with the British Mountaineering Council, who will launch their Climate Project at this year’s ShAFF, just one of many free festival experiences on offer that go beyond the films. Conservation also continues to be a key theme of the Festival of the Outdoors this year, with a variety of volunteering and muck-in sessions on offer. In addition to the varied

My boss told me to have a good day. So I went home. I took my 8-year old girl to the office with me on, “Take Your Kid to Work Day.” As we walked around the office, she starting crying, so I asked what was wrong with her. As my colleagues gathered round she sobbed: “But daddy where are all the clowns you said you worked with?” You know what happens if you don’t pay your exorcist? You get repossessed.

CHARITY CALLS FOR HELP FOR NEIGHBOURS WITH DEMENTIA Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline is experiencing a significant increase in calls during this winter period in a climate of stretched healthcare services. Some of the most common problems are social isolation, worry and stress for families living with dementia. The Helpline is therefore urging communities to improve their knowledge of the increased risk to people with dementia during the wintertime. This can include the flu, which can cause additional distress and the person with dementia admitted into hospital – this is at a time when there have been increased admissions to hospital around this illness. Dementia UK provides specialist dementia support for families through its Admiral Nurse service. When things get challenging or difficult for people with dementia and their families, Admiral Nurses work alongside them, giving the compassionate one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions that can be difficult to find elsewhere. They are a lifeline helping families to live more positively with dementia in the present, and to face the challenges of tomorrow with more confidence and less fear. Some important advice from Dementia UK’s Helpline Nurses for communities to support people with dementia during winter includes: • Checking-in with a person with dementia and their family. Even if you’re a neighbour, just asking if someone’s ok can have a massive impact. You can also check in to see if there are any supplies
they need like warm clothing or food • Getting a flu vaccine for the whole family as soon as possible. Community pharmacies can deliver this in people’s own homes • Never forgetting the joys of indoor activities if the weather gets too cold and you’re unable to go outside. Puzzles and games can help to engage a person with dementia and can be enjoyed by the whole family, friends and even wider community • Speaking to your local council to find out what resources are available, or if you’re not sure how to do that, phone the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline for advice on finding local support networks on 0800 888 6678 or emailing helpline@ dementiauk.org Paulette Winchester-Joseph, of the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline said: “From the calls we receive on our Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline, we know that there are significant challenges faced by people living with dementia and their families during wintertime. Coping with depression, anxiety and social isolation are some of the more common issues but our Admiral Nurses can support families affected by dementia through these tough times. This is why we’re urging communities to look out for families who may be vulnerable, including some families living with dementia, and to encourage them to access local resources or groups, wherever possible. Some community services provide invaluable support to help people with dementia and their families cope better during this challenging time of the year. Whether

50+ SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES Sporting Chance Sheffield (part of the Volunteering Matters Charity) have been delivering mens engagement and physical activity sessions in North Sheffield for the last 18 months. They have engaged with over 100 individuals over that time, who have gone the them for a variety of reasons; some have suffered with bereavement and loneliness, mental health issues, others have had strokes, heart attacks, diabetes other illnesses/conditions. They offer a warm welcome to men aged 50 and over, weekly sessions take place and offer a mix of discussion, board games/cards dominoes, quizzes, short walks, circuit training, and chair based exercise, bowls, boccia, badminton and others. The sessions are friendly and informal and a great way to make new friends, get fitter and get out of the house. Social isolation and loneliness can have a massive impact on mental and physical wellbeing and this can be increased over the dark winter months. They have had many men who were feeling lonely/suffering with depression or poor health, join in their sessions and continue to stay and thrive. It can be difficult making that first step to join a new group, but they always give people a warm welcome and a cuppa! People can choose which activities they wish to participate depending on how they are feeling. Although the groups are aimed at men only aged 50 and over we welcome companions/carers on initial visits to their sessions to help people settle in. Frank who is 87 is a regular on their activities and says he loves the banter and friendship and now has something to look forward to every week, others have seen a marked improvement in mood and physical health. They aim to involve participants in decision making and there is now a constituted Friends of Sporting Chance Group who has obtained funding for trips and new activities. They have made some great links in the community and have enjoyed support from Flower T.A.R.A, Stubbin T.A.R.A and Friends of Firth Park group. They are extremely grateful for the additional support, a grant from the city councils community fund has made to the group There are volunteering opportunities,

Wedding Guide The dos and don’ts of planning your ultimate proposal
A study commissioned by Interflora has revealed a growing trend towards extravagant public proposals - aimed at attracting maximum attention and securing that all-important ‘yes’. In fact, Interflora’s research revealed that almost two thirds of people would like a ‘public’ proposal, with a quarter of those questioned admitting an extravagant proposal would make them more likely to say ‘yes.’
So, with the pressure on to create the ‘ultimate proposal’, Interflora has teamed up with Lisa Victoria Smith, founder of Isla and Smith Wedding Planning and Design to reveal the dos and don’ts when it comes to popping the big question. Do take into account how your prospective partner-for-life feels about crowds Planning to propose in the middle of Manchester United’s football stadium during a Liverpool game may be your dream, but is it theirs? We’re not saying it’s their way or the highway, but at least find a compromise so that your lover doesn’t wish the ground would swallow them up whole. They may, on the other hand, love a crowd! Try and gauge their reaction in the weeks leading up to your special moment by asking their opinion on public declarations of love. Or, failing this, look at funny ones on
YouTube which may point you in the right direction for their reaction.
‘pop up’ hot spot so that you can return here to rekindle the memory in years to come.
Do put thought into how you’ll do it It’s going to be re-told A LOT, so do make sure that it’s a story worth telling. This doesn’t mean it has to be wildly adventurous or cost a small fortune but it should feel like you have put some serious thought into it. It will be one of your loveliest memories when you get to 90 and you’re reliving it to your grandchildren, so make it count by taking your sweetheart back to places you have been to that you both loved; your first kiss or the moment you first saw them. Believe me, this will score you some major brownie points in the sentiment department and it will get even the most dry-eyed amongst us weeping away. It’s also wise to do it somewhere that will stand the test of time and that isn’t the latest
Don’t guess! Making a huge investment in a piece of jewellery that they have to wear forever would make anyone nervous. Play it safe and buy into the new trend for dummy rings for less than £50 as a token engagement ring. And it doesn’t have to be diamonds; there are some gorgeous alternatives out therewith emeralds, rubies and pearls taking centre stage. Asking a close friend, your love’s mother or sneaking a peak at their wardrobe or jewellery box for clues into the styles that they already love will help if you do want to buy “the one” up front. Do remember to put your family first You’ve just taken the first step in inviting them to be your new family, so extending the respect to your partner’s parents by
asking permission first will go a long way in showing them that you care about their feelings too. Even if they’re not that traditional, it starts your engagement off on a good foot. The same rule applies to when you are basking in your proposal glory; telling family first, ahead of social media posts and friends is a nice way to build a strong foundation between your respective clans. You’ve decided to become family, so you may as well start now!
Do try to keep it a secret Loose lips sink ships goes the old wives’ tale, so try to limit the amount of people you tell prior to popping the question. You’re playing a risky game of it getting back to your love, and, if it does, they may feel like the last one to know, which will leave them feeling deflated when the time actually comes.

HI HO SHEFFIELD CITY HALL
Legendary guitarist and two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Beck visits Sheffield City Hall on the 23rd of May as part of a highly anticipated UK tour. The Grammy Awardwinning guitarist will be joined by Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, Rhonda Smith on bass, and cellist Vanessa Freebairn-Smith. Having cultivated one of the most influential careers in rock history, Jeff Beck is universally acknowledged as one of the most talented and significant guitarists in the world, and has played alongside some of the greatest artists of rock, blues and jazz.
Over the course of his distinguished 50+ music career, he has earned an incredible eight Grammy Awards, been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice – once as a member of the Yardbirds and again as a solo artist. In the summer of 2016, the guitar virtuoso celebrated his 5 decades of music with an extraordinary concert at the famous Hollywood Bowl. Beck famously replaced Eric Clapton as the Yardbirds’ lead guitarist in 1965 and later went on to form The Jeff Beck Group,
which featured Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass. Their two albums - Truth (1968) and Beck-Ola (1969) – would become musical touchstones for hard rockers in the years to come. The constantly evolving Beck’s next move -- a power trio with bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice, which released Beck, Bogert and Appice (1973), once again shattered people’s preconceptions of what a rock guitarist was supposed to sound like. 1985’s Flash kept Beck in the spotlight as he earned the Best Rock Instrumental Grammy for the song “Escape.” A second
Grammy came with Jeff Beck’s Guitar Shop with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas, and a third for “Dirty Mind” from the You Had It Coming album in 2001. 2009 saw the release of the platinum-selling Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott’s, which earned a Grammy for “A Day In The Life”. Beck’s astonishing 2010 solo album, Emotion & Commotion, brought about two additional Grammy Awards; Beck was nominated in 5 categories before bringing home three: Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “Hammerhead” and Best Pop Instrumental
performance for “Nessun Dorma”, both from Emotion & Commotion, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Imagine,” his collaboration with Herbie Hancock.
His Rock ‘N’ Roll Party Honoring Les Paul album was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. In 2016 he released Loud Hailer and in 2017 Jeff Beck: Live At
The Hollywood Bowl was released, both to widespread critical acclaim. Jeff is working on new music due in 2020 to be released worldwide by Rhino / Warner Records.
Tickets are on genral sale now and available from the Sheffield City Hall Box Office or https://www. sheffieldcityhall. co.uk/event/jeff-beck

A STEP FORWARD FOR PLANS TO RESTORE LEAH’S YARD A planning application to start the restoration of Leah’s Yard – a Grade II* Listed building on Cambridge Street – has been submitted, with the long-term vision for the building to play a key role in a new cultural district in Sheffield city centre. Leah’s Yard, which sits on Cambridge Street within the Council’s £470 million Heart of the City II development scheme, houses a collection of small, former industrial workshops. Although plans are still in the early stages, there is a real desire from the Council and their strategic development partner, Queensberry, to maintain the site’s unique Sheffield character and provide new ‘maker’ space for the city’s current and next creative
generations. The project team will be inviting bids toward the end of March this year from interested organisations who may wish to occupy and manage the spaces. In the meantime, Listed Building Consent is being sought to undertake the fundamental construction works to make the building structurally sound and to bring it back into a usable condition. This will include making the building wind and water-tight by installing new windows, doors and roof. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are attempting to retain attractive heritage across the Heart of the City II site, whilst ensuring we create exciting
new spaces that are beneficial and sustainable to the local economy. “With some of the most interesting architecture in the city centre, this city block was always going to be one of the most challenging and rewarding blocks in the masterplan. Bringing Leah’s Yard back to its former glory is something high on our list of priorities. We believe the new plans for the building will help give a cultural heart and social anchor to the scheme. “Today’s application for Listed Building Consent on Leah’s Yard is the first step in realising its true potential.” George Wilson, Associate at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios – the architect firm involved, commented: “Our approach recognises the significance of
the buildings on Cambridge Street, including the Grade II* Listed Leah’s Yard, and the story they tell of how the area has
developed over time. “By celebrating and working with the existing fabric we will create a place that is distinctly ‘of
Sheffield’, but also reflects Sheffield’s bold and forward-looking ambition in which a new context will be created for the old.”
Sheffield City Council has also been working closely with heritage interest groups in the city. They have been discussing design
and usage ideas, and all feedback is being considered in the evolving plans for Leah’s Yard and wider Cambridge Street site.

It is almost impossible to tell got a newspaper column to produce how big a fish is from a photograph, content for! I wasn’t alone though; especially if you were not present during you can tell the weather is awful by the capture, and I should know. After nine number of so-called anglers arguing years writing weekly reports for Carponline instead of going fishing! Talk magazine, covering at least one It seems to be getting worse every year as third of the UK, I’ve seen my fair share social media marches with unstoppable of false claims by anglers who have progression into our everyday lives, and obviously sent in two pictures of the same as a result, standards of communication fish after changing their hat or hoody, or between actual people continues to turned the fish around to show the other plummet. Everyone seems to have their side, or claimed “I had this last week” smartphone or tablet firmly glued to their whilst squatting before a fully leafed hand, and everyone who has a platform tree, wearing a tee-shirt, in February… is suddenly an expert on everything and apparently. So, if I think it’s tricky to keen to let the world know about their decide how big a fish is from an image, brilliance! and therefore seek confirmation from I noted it especially this week when other sources, what makes Joe Public one of the major weekly publications think he can do it within seconds from posted an update from a lucky angler a social media snapshot? The answer is who had banked a river record barbel of they can’t really, and they don’t care, over 18lbs. But of course, they should all be sponsored… I was pleased therefore to receive an email from a proper angler I met at a recent Angling Trades Association meeting, Andy Wedgbury, who invited me to join a fairly new Facebook group called Fishamo. He emailed me to ask if I’d help new anglers with a little bit of guidance if required, and because he knows that like him, I hate this culture of online bullying in angling and instead would rather try and promote ‘The Brotherhood’ of angling. Fishamo promises to vet members and moderate accordingly to try and make new anglers feel welcome and allow them to be able to ask any questions without fear of ridicule; after all, we all started out once, and probably all asked the same questions, but we had to do it face to face, where the snide comments which appear online would have quickly resulted in a

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury BRECKIN MADE HONORARY IT WASN’T TO BE - WARNE JOHN LIFE PRESIDENT BY MILLERS Rotherham United boss Paul Warne reflected on his side’s display at home to AFC Wimbledon this afternoon. The Millers came from behind to lead through goals from Matt Crooks and Freddie Ladapo but were denied all the points in the 93rd minute by a Wimbledon penalty. “I thought we played really well today,” said Warne. “I was pleased with them and I said to them at half-time, just keep doing that and be
patient. I understand Wimbledon one-nil up away from home are not going to be in a rush to take anything, but don’t get involved in that too much, keep playing the way you’re playing and you’ll get chances to, hopefully, win the game. “Obviously, we did create enough chances to win a game but, unfortunately today, it just wasn’t our day. In fairness, you win games when you’re not at your best and you don’t pick up points when you are

MOORE HAILS HARD WORK OF HIS PLAYERS Darren Moore felt his players gave everything to the cause in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Gillingham in Sky Bet League One. Darren Moore pleased with hard work at Gillingham. Rovers played the best part of an hour with 10 men following a Fejiri Okenabirhie red card, and Moore believes the commitment shown by his side was deserving of at least a point. He said: “It’s a bizarre loss really, the conditions were hard but the way we came down here and set out our stall gives me no complaints. I thought the boys performed
excellently against a difficult side to play against. “We had a lot of control for large parts of the game, the red card we can have no complaints with really, but the dominance we had is an absolute testament to the players out there, we’re just disappointed we couldn’t get that equaliser. “I made a point of going over to the fans before the game to applaud them, and I made sure I went over again at full time, to sincerely
at your best. It’s just one of them. “I thought the lads were excellent and I really enjoy watching them play. “The ref’s given it [the penalty] unfortunately for us. We could have had a good win to make a good weekend, but it doesn’t detract from the performance. We created loads of chances, I thought we were really good and I can’t ask for much more than that. “They’re devastated in there. There wasn’t a lot said, I just told them how proud I was of the efforts they put in to win a football match, but it wasn’t to be. My only criticism of them was the ball came in, and they had had a warning five minutes before. Whilst the Millers are still top of the league, Warne was pleased of the whole squad’s
contribution which is keeping his side right in the hunt for promotion. “It’s still tight at the top and we’ll have to pick up points when we’re not playing well,” he added. “It wasn’t that today, because we’ve played well and didn’t get what we deserved. “It was a great goal from Freddie. Having a good, strong squad’s a jot but having to keep them all happy isn’t so funny! The bench came and added something different. All the strikers have got different abilities and Freddie came on and took his goal really well. That late on in a home game, we really should be seeing it out – that’s the only disappointment for me.”
thank them for their tremendous support. I know while they’ll be upset with the result, they’ll have seen the commitment.” Rovers now have a full week of work ahead before they head on another away trip, this time to Shrewsbury Town, and Moore is looking forward to putting in the minutes on the training ground. He added: “In terms of the performance, the desire and the commitment shown by the players, the willingness to stand up and put their
bodies on the line, is really rewarding for me,. “I’m really pleased we have a full week to work with the squad now, those midweek fixtures are off for a little bit, so we can really get some hard graft in, and I think that will stand us in good stead going forward. “We move on quickly and look towards the Shrewsbury game, I don’t see any reason why we can’t look to go on a run - slowly but surely we’ll try to head in the right direction.”

Storm Ciara last week caused little damage to the fixture list, however Storm Dennis this weekend had different plans. Only three games survived the torrential rain and strong winds. Play was not stopped in the Premier Division at Dodworth Miners Welfare Sports and Social Club, where third placed (and last year’s runners up) Dodworth Miners Welfare hosted runaway leaders Swinton Athletic. The game was settled in Swinton’s favour by first half goals from Jake Ford and Curtis Wilkinson. Wragg League (Over 35s / Over 45s) with A. Royston
Once again the weather caused problems with the fixtures out of 22 matches only 3 managed to play. The Premier Division was wiped out completely and their was just one game in Division 1 with Bullcroft entertaining Denaby United. The match ended 4-4, the home team scorers were Thompson 2 and Magilliton 2. There were no matches in Division 2. The 2-0 win takes Swinton a huge 12 points clear. Goals from Redon Gashi, Manny Katundu, Mike Owusu and Nathan Wilson Weekes gave Wakefield AFC a 4-0 away win over Burngreave FC. Back to back league wins for Wakefield take them into fourth place in the Premier Division. There was a huge game in Division One, where third placed Handsworth FC Reserves faced second placed AFC Dronfield. In-form Handsworth made it four straight league wins at Oliver’s Mount with a 3-1 victory. Handsworth are now four points behind Dronfield in the standings. WE HAVE TO FIGHT OUR WAY OUT OF THIS Garry Monk says the only route out of the Owls’ current slump is for everyone in the camp to show the character and fight required.
Wednesday went down 3-0 at home to Reading to extend their recent run of poor results and Monk insists he will keep his head above the parapet and hope to end the cycle. He said: “We have to fight our way out of this, it’s the only
SHEFFIELD FANS DERBY RAISES OVER 9K! The Sheffield Fans Derby has raised over £9,000 for the Sheffield Hospitals Charity Dementia Appeal. way. We have to stick together and I thought the fans were fantastic today in sticking with the players and I said that to them after the game. “The results aren’t good enough and they have every right to say what they wish but even though what they saw today wasn’t the level required, they stayed with the players. “We know we are in
a slump and we need strong character to come out the other side. Can we do it? Yes. Are the players capable of doing it? Yes. We need a win, something to get us back on track. “I’ve been in football a long time, I’ve been a manager a long time and this run is right up there but we can get out with hard work, strong character, belief and fight.”
Sheffield Hospitals Charity Dementia Appeal, whose aim is to give support and create an environment to suit those living with the illness. Run by unpaid volunteers, the Sheffield Fans Derby first took place in
2008, and has now raised over £50,000 for 15 local charities since its inception. On Saturday, the group’s organisers held a cheque presentation at half time at Hillsborough. The next Sheffield Fans Derby is already in the

FOX PRESENTED WITH PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD Morgan Fox was presented with his swfc. co.uk Player of the Month award on Saturday at Hillsborough. For the second time this season the defender was voted as the winner with 47% of the January vote. The defender has been a key figure for the Owls this season and has made 26 appearances, chipping in with three goals. He also scooped the Player of the Month award in October. The full back has been sidelined since late January with an ankle injury. The presentation was made ahead of the clash with Reading on Saturday by 13-yearold Harrison. The young Wednesday fan was invited to the club on Saturday after a journey to forget on the way to Luton in midweek. On his 13th birthday, Harrison was travelling to Luton to back the Owls at Kenilworth Road with his family, only for the car to break down on the way! After a stressful journey, Harrison made it to the ground in the end and was invited to the club on Saturday, where he met with Fox for the official trophy presentation.

U23s SUFFER DEFEAT Sheffield United Under 23s are still looking for their first win of 2020 after a 3-0 home defeat against Hull City. Three goals in quick succession in the first half left the Blades with a mountain to climb, and despite largely dominating the second half, couldn’t muster a comeback. There were several changes to the team as George Broadbent and Iliman Ndiaye came into the side for the first time
since going out on loan, while Keenan Ferguson returned after a few months out injured. It was Ferguson who had the best chance to open the scoring when he fired over from an early corner, but it was two goals in two minutes that put the Blades on the back foot. Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring when his deflected effort squirmed under Jordan Amissah, before James Berry capitalised on a
Blades clearance minutes later to slot home the second. The Blades responded and had two good chances in quick succession when Jake Young saw a low effort saved and Harry Boyes fired over from inside the box when played in by Ndiaye. Hull though extended their lead just before the break when Billy Chadwick converted Callum Jones’s free-kick at the back post to put the game beyond United. The Blades were well on top after the break and were twice denied by the crossbar as first Boyes
saw an effort tipped onto the woodwork and later Broadbent’s driven cross deflected off a Hull defender onto the crossbar too. Young forced the Hull keeper into a good save soon after and the impressive Boyes went close again as he saw a powerful effort tipped over the bar.
Blades: Amissah, Ferguson (Gordon 46), Boyes, Belehouan, Hall, Gomis, Brunt (Neal 46), Broadbent, Young, Ndiaye, Gribbin (Gaxha 61). Unused: S. Kelly, Brooks.
