We all know the financial benefits of cycling. If your commuting, it’s cheaper than almost any other form of transport. But we don’t live near the equator and life isn’t as simple as that. The weather in the UK is without question the biggest deterrent for regular cycling. Weather conditions, however, aren’t just strenuous on us as cyclists, but also on our bikes. Bike servicing is a necessary part of bike ownership. The more damp, wet and horrid the environment you cycle in the more the bike and bike parts suffer. Cables, chains and cogs are all exposed to the elements and sometimes in Yorkshire, we can boast an environment adept at eroding metal. Add that in with a bit of grit and soil or even road salt and you could soon be experiencing problems. Most bike shops offer servicing. Usually, three levels of general servicing, plus small jobs if you have particular issues. Typically, the lowest level covers adjusting what’s there. Mid-level you can expect fresh cables and a drivetrain degrease and service. The top usually denotes a strip down to the frame and rebuild, probably only necessary once every couple of years if you teeter between recreational and some commuting. The mid service makes sense probably
twice a year, once after winter and once perhaps after summer ready for Autumn. For parts, expect a couple of chains a year and some fresh brake pads. A change of the rear cogs is also necessary probably once a year and with e-bikes you can expect to run through probably an extra chain with that added power. Typically, the top service will see you just north of £100 plus parts and step down in pricing the lower service point you opt for. Cycle Scheme puts maintenance costs of a bike at roughly £150 per year. Of course, regularly cleaning and
a little self-maintenance goes a long way too. Reasonable all considered, perhaps a little conservative, but much less than a car. Certainly, a little left over for some good, weather appropriate clothing. As the Norwegian saying goes, ‘There’s no bad weather, just bad clothes.’ All levels of servicing available at South Yorkshire Electric Bike Centre www. syebc.co.uk . Head down during March and get ready for spring with a free bike check over & adjust.

DENNIS’ STORY Dennis began smoking at the age of 13 and slowly the amount he was smoking crept up to the stage where he was smoking, for a few years, 120 cigarettes per day. Dennis remembers he started smoking due to peer pressure and “it was what everyone did back then.” Over the years Dennis managed to reduce how many he smoked. When Dennis signed up to the 12 week Yorkshire Smoke Free Quit programme he was smoking around 15-20 per day. Dennis attended one to one support sessions with a Yorkshire Smoke Free advisor at his local GP surgery, with the help of the advisor and medication Dennis is now a
none smoker. Dennis feels the support he received was excellent and the advisor was ‘very very very ‘ supportive. Having used allsorts to try and help him in the past Dennis believes all that works for him is the support of the advisor and champix. Since stopping smoking Dennis has noticed his persistent cough has eased and he feels so much better in himself and highly recommends the service to any smoker who is thinking about stopping smoking.

My wife tells me I have 2 major faults, I don’t listen - and something else. People say the back of my head looks really nice. But I don’t see it. new cash support for abuse victims childcare support
QUOTING ‘THE MERCURY’
Sheffield City Council is pleased to announce that a bid for government funding support for survivors of domestic violence has been successful. The city has been awarded £67,336 of the Government’s £16.6m national fund. The funding pot has been made available to local authorities to bid for specialist help and housing provision for those affected by domestic abuse. The fund will help fill the gaps in specialist safe housing provision for domestic abuse victims. The pilot scheme, starting in April for the duration of one year will provide supported accommodation for men, including LGBT+ community, and some women for whom the current refuge provision is not suitable. Cabinet member for Health and Social Care at Sheffield City Council, George Lindars-Hammond said: “We are delighted with the news of our successful bid to Government to enable Sheffield Council to work with our partners IDAS and Target Housing to provide specialist
Heritage skills weekend offers careers advice with a traditional twist Members of the public are being offered the rare chance to try their hand at some of the region's oldest and rarest traditional crafts next month. Everyone from a stained glass expert to a stone mason are being lined up to demonstrate their art at the free, twoday ‘Heritage Skills' event which is held at Sheffield's Woodland Gallery in Stannington. The event - which takes place on the weekend of March 28th and 29th - is hoping to encourage more people to take up traditional crafts and learn new skills as a result. The Sheffield area is home to scores of independent operators that have made their careers learning and keeping heritage skills alive. The special taster weekend offers demonstrations in: Blacksmithing Environmental art/crafts Lime mortar Willow crafts Making wooden bowls and spoons Stained glass Stone masonry and stone walling Hedgelayer Stake maker/wood splitter. Organiser Richard Godley said: "We're hoping to use the free weekend to introduce the benefits of heritage crafts to scores of new people. They offer everything from making you more employable to amazing mental health benefits. We've been lucky enough to persuade some of the region's most skilled craftspeople to come and demonstrate their art over the free weekend." The event is organised by the WEA in conjunction with Sheffield Lakeland Partnership. The free event takes place from 10am until 3pm each day. There is also free car parking. The Woodland Gallery is based at Storrs Wood, Storrs Lane, Stannington, Sheffield S6 6GY.
supported safe accommodation for men who are at risk of domestic abuse, and women for whom refuge is not appropriate. We know that Domestic Abuse affects thousands of people in Sheffield each year and we are committed to supporting all people who suffer, including men and LGBT+ people. The funding will help us to meet our ambition of expanding our specialist supported accommodation provision to more people. The accommodation will include safety features and will be provided and managed by Target Housing. Residents will have access to the help they need from Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS) who currently provide specialist domestic abuse services in Sheffield. CEO of IDAS, Sarah Hill said: “This funding is great news for victims living in Sheffield. We know from years of experience that victims are most at risk at the point when they escape an abusive relationship. So to increase their options for safe, emergency accommodation with support, is absolutely vital. We very much look forward to working closely with partners to set up the new service over the coming months. The new fund will mean the refuge provision can be extended to provide 8 extra units to support 8 victims (and children if relevant) with the potential to support approximately 25 people per year.
Thousands of working parents could get more than £1,000 a month back in childcare support through Universal Credit. Working parents can claim up to 85 per cent of their childcare costs - worth up to a maximum of £646 per month for one child, or up to £1,108 per month for two or more children. It’s easy to find out if you are eligible and start your claim, all you need to do is speak to your jobcentre work coach and give them some simple details including the name, address and registration number of your childcare provider and the full costs of your childcare. Your childcare support is paid in arrears – this means you will pay the costs upfront yourself and Universal Credit will then pay you money back. If you’re struggling to afford the upfront costs you can get help with the flexible support fund, you can ask your work coach how to apply. You can even claim for childcare costs for the month before you start work if you have accepted a job offer. And, if your work finishes, tell the DWP immediately as support with childcare costs can be claimed for at least a month after your employment ends to help you maintain your childcare as you move between jobs. To see if you’re eligible for over a thousand pounds a month to help with childcare, visit www. understandinguniversalcredit.gov.uk” The Universal Credit childcare offer is part of the package of support available for parents, which may include free childcare for 15 or 30 hours a week.

An increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals has led to a shortage of allied healthcare workers, especially phlebotomists - the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. Demand is at an all-time high with hospitals, clinics and GP Surgeries offering a golden opportunity for that “longed for” career change! If you have good people skills and manual dexterity, and like the idea of working in a busy healthcare environment, a phlebotomist job may be just the job for you! Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Amy, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres (DWP), who can sometimes pay for your course in full if you are eligible” says Amy. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is much easier once you are “on the ladder” and have some experience behind you. Many Geopace students are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and a few have even chosen to work abroad where there is often a similar shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. An interesting booklet featur-
ing student’s “Success Stories” is written by the student’s themselves and looks at how they have made the move from wide and varied backgrounds to find themselves now working as phlebotomists. A copy can be downloaded from the Geopace website’s testimonials page. If you like the idea of a challenging career in healthcare and particularly in phlebotomy then this may be the perfect move for you! The comprehensive training course last a full two days and culminates in the award of a nationally recognised and accredited certificate. “We practice taking blood from artificial arms”, says Amy “and everyone on our course has a lot of fun! We get a great deal of satisfaction later on when we hear from our students that they are working for their local GP surgery or in their local hospital.” Courses are running in Rotherham on 4-5 July and 11-12 November. If you would like to know more about phlebotomy as a career or to book a place on the course visit Geopace Training’s website at www.geopace.net

ELVIS (NOT THAT ONE) ENTERS THE CITY HALL
Elvis Costello and The Imposters will bring their new show to the UK for their first tour of the decade in February and March 2020, including a visit to Sheffield City Hall on 7th March. The tour is entitled Just Trust in answer to the musical questions: “Will they play my favourite song?,” or, “Are they going to frighten the horses with songs that are rarely performed and send some of their old nags off to pasture?” When ticket holders ask, “Can I expect the hits of yesteryear
and those of tomorrow?” We say: Just Trust Elvis Costello and The Imposters. This superlative ensemble Steve Nieve on keyboards, Pete Thomas on drums, and bassist and vocalist, Davey Faragher - are once again augmented by singers Kitten Kuroi and Briana Lee, all of whom were heard on the acclaimed 2018 Concord Records release, ‘Look Now,’ numbers from which will find their rightful place among the highlights from one of the most unique and renowned
song catalogues in popular music. The tour comes after a season of unlikely accolades in which the now defunct British Empire finally acknowledged a member of the enduring MacManus Clan with a medal that both friends and detractors have assumed stood for the “’Orrible Bloody Elvis” medal and in the same year in which Costello received a Hollywood Walk Of Fame Star alongside Spike Lee, Billy Idol, Burt Ward and his former video costar, Julia Roberts
and following in the footsteps of Fred Astaire, Ruby Keeler and Rin Tin Tin, among many, many other stars of stage, screen and
the radio airwaves. Elvis Costello and The Imposters most recent record release was the E.P. ‘Purse’, containing songs
co-written with Burt Bacharach and Paul McCartney along with musical settings of words by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.
It is available from all reputable phonographic emporiums or if you go fishing in the stream.
Tickets available from the City Hall Box Office or by visiting sheffieldcityhall. co.uk

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve had an extremely busy week, but unfortunately, I haven’t managed to get anywhere near the waterside! For the last two weeks, I’ve been putting the finishing touches to a hefty fishing freelance writing job for a client which has caused me far more stress than it should have, then I had a weekend of mayhem at the Northern Angling Show; did you go? I always look forward to NAS, it’s a great show with an always friendly northern crowd so it’s usually good fun. This weekend, I arrived bright and early ready for a team briefing, only to be turned around at the car park entrance as I was an exhibitor, not a member of the public, so “can’t park here without a pass” which I explained I was meeting someone to receive. The hi-vis clad attendant then directed me to a closed car park, then to an exhibitors car park further around which, you’ve guessed it, I couldn’t park in as I hadn’t got the requisite pass! I returned after forty minutes to the first car park where members of the public were parking without a pass, had a short, sharp, agricultural debate with the gatekeeper, and finally got inside the venue; not the start I’d hoped for! Once inside, the huge Spotted Fin stand
looked resplendent in blue, an island amongst a sea of camouflage or khaki, and most of the team were rushing around getting things tidy before event doors were opened. A brand new bait release was expected to draw punters quickly, the Classic Corn range of carp products had already drawn plenty of online queries, so it was placed front and centre to ensure everyone could see it. Elsewhere, the match bait bundles were placed in buckets, and the fantastic Method Ready Pellets had a section of their own as they too were expected to sell well. We had plenty of staff, and it was great to meet people with whom I’d only interacted with previously on social media, and just minutes before the countdown stopped, we were ready to go! Within minutes, we had a sea of customers on all four sides of our stand, products were being passed out, and cash flooded into the till. It was manic all morning, our pile of baits (we’d taken over three tonnes) dwindled quickly, and early on, the decision was made to send the van back for additional stocks; all the way to Watford! It isn’t all about the money though, as a relatively new company, of only five years standing, the shows are a superb way to raise brand profile and introduce products to new customers, and that’s the bit I enjoy most. I’m also
extremely humbled when someone extends their hand and tells me they read what I write, or that they’ve seen what I catch, and I come home with new friends…what could be better than that? After two days of graft, the time came to pack away, and as everyone wanted to get home, the show arena quickly became like a scene from Wacky Races, with sack trollies and pallet loaders racing for space as vans were loaded quicker than you’d ever believe! Our team had worked extremely hard, gone through several crates of bottled water, boxes of fizzy pop, plenty of chocolate cakes, bacon sandwiches, chips and sweets, sold hundreds of products, and made many new friends. Overall though, the show was another huge success for Spotted Fin, it was nice to get some positive feedback

too, prominent figures within the trade telling our team that we were now ‘top three’ material within retailers, and we had our best ever Northern Angling Show in terms of product sold and more importantly, returning customers… As I write this, I’ve still got a sore throat as a result of repeating the benefits of Method Ready Pellets hundreds of times, my face is raw with tiredness, and my feet are absolutely killing me… never mind, it’s The Big One Show this coming weekend, and our team will do it all over again; see you there!

IT FELT LIKE ONE OF THE MOST SATISFYING WINS I’VE HAD - WARNE Millers boss Paul Warne revealed that his side’s lastgasp victory over Accrington Stanley, thanks to Ben Wiles’ stoppage time header, was one of his most satisfying at the Rotherham helm. The Millers looked set to be knocked off the summit of the Sky Bet League One standings with the game at the Wham Stadium drifting to a draw but Wiles, on as a substitute, sent the large travelling Millers hordes back over the Pennines,
away from home when you shoot to your fans and there were a lot of them here today, which I thank them for. For that goal to go in so late on, I was praying we would hang on. It was a nervy five minutes and I was really pleased.” In difficult conditions, there was a little to separate the sides’ for much of a tight Roses clash – with chances at a premium. Following a lacklustre first 45 minutes, Rotherham were rewarded for a much better second half performance when substitute Freddie Ladapo notched his 15th goal of the season, just minutes after coming off the bench, but Millers’ joy proved shortlived, as Jordan Clark equalised for the home side almost immediately. With the game heading for a draw,
Wiles came off the bench to turn the game in the Millers favour – although there was further drama when Offrande Zanzala headed over, in the dying seconds, before Matt Crooks almost put gloss on the scoreline when he struck the woodwork, in the game’s last act. “Overall, I was disappointed with the first half performance.” Warne added. “They caused us problems and they should have gone a goal up at the break. Our second half performance was better and justified the win for us. We weren’t as good at set pieces today, whether that was the wind, but we did enough to win and to score, so late on feels like a big win for us. “There were lot of breaks and fouls in the game and there was not a flow to
because when I look back, we just didn’t do enough to win it. We didn’t seem right when we were on the ball and we’ve come away with nothing,” he said. “They went man for man on us and that sort of stopped us from doing what we wanted to do, we didn’t have enough cleverness about us to change it. We had a couple of chances but we weren’t ruthless enough. “We switched off late on and conceded a sloppy goal, but we’ll learn from it. We’ll go back and we’ll work hard to put things right. We get back
in and start working towards the game next weekend now.” Moore will be looking for a swift response when Rovers host Wycombe Wanderers next weekend. He says there are players around the team that will be itching to get the side back to winning ways, whilst also praising Aston Villa loanee Jacob Ramsey. “What I will say is I thought young Jacob was probably the best player on the pitch. He’s only 18 and for him to put on a performance like he did was pleasing for me. He was unfortunate to hit the
post,” he added. “The chances were there for us but I just felt we were off it, but myself, the boys, the staff we have to accept that and move on quickly. In terms of honesty, commitment, endeavour, I’d never doubt that of this squad. “The team is wide open for places once again and players will be looking to get into the side and start. I select the team off the best performances in the week and once they get on the training ground, I know they’ll be keen to try and put things right.”
Joe Wright says Rovers need to learn their lesson quickly after falling to defeat at Shrewsbury Town in Sky Bet League One. Dave Edwards scored the only goal of the game to send Rovers home empty handed despite creating several chances at Montgomery Waters Meadow. Wright said: “Disappointing is probably the best way
to sum it up, I don’t think we got going the way we know we can.” “We need to learn from that quickly and start trying to put some positive results together. “The conditions showed how difficult it was first half, a lot of the play was in the air so very hard to judge.” With promotion chasing Wycombe Wanderers next up,
the centre-back says now is the time to put a run of wins together as they look to stay in touch with the top six. He added: “Looking at the table we’re going to have to start winning games consistently. “We’re more than capable of that as we saw around Christmas and New Year, so hopefully we can repeat that and climb the table.”
in jubilant mood, when he nodded Dan Barlaser’s cross into the far corner of the net, to give Warne’s side their fourth victory in five games. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne struggled to contain his delight at the manner of his side’s victory, which maintained their push for automatic promotion. “It felt like one of the most satisfying wins I’ve had as a manager.” Warne enthused. “It’s always the same

MOORE HAS NO COMPLAINTS WITH RESULT Darren Moore said his team didn’t do enough in Saturday’s defeat at Shewsbury Town. Dave Edwards scored the only goal 14 minutes from time, and Moore felt his side were uncharacteristically off it at Montgomery Waters Meadow. “It was a scrappy game and I’m disappointed really

it. We did not put enough decent crosses in, especially in the first-half. It wasn’t good conditions but it was the same for both teams.” In a finely poised affair, Warne was delighted with the impact of his three substitutes with Wiles and Ladapo finding the scoresheet while Josh Koroma injected much-needed attacking impetus, near the end. “We wanted to change it as sometimes it’s not your day.” Warne added. “I thought Freddie would cause them different problems.
I put Vass out wide and it was a game for athletes. Wilsey has a lot of pace and people do not appreciate how quick he is while Josh was really good today,
when he came on. “I thought Freddie was a bright spark for us. His attitude in training has been spot on and he backs himself to score goals.
I thought his mobility was the difference for us when he came on. The game suited Freddie and I’m really happy he got the goal for us.”
LOCAL FOOTBALL County Senior Leagues with Michael Clarke
Another week and another storm hit the region, and once again a large number of the scheduled fixtures this week were postponed. Luckily seven games did survive. Premier Division Swinton Athletic took advantage of the lack of games in the Premier Division to go 15 points clear at the top. Swinton were 4-0 winners on Saturday against Burngreave FC, with the goals coming from Justin Greenwood, Enzo Guarini, and Regan Kelly (2). Division One Second placed AFC Dronfield suffered their second straight loss, losing 2-1 at home to now fourth placed South Kirkby Colliery. Kiveton Park made it three consecutive wins in all competitions, with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Union at Wales High School. Wragg League (Over 35s / Over 45s) with A. Royston
Yet again the rain tried to upset the league schedule but we did manage to get nine games played. However once again the four Premier games were cancelled, the fixture secretary will have to juggle the matches to make sure all the games are played before the closing date. DIVISION 1 Top club Hemsworth Miners played their game away at Denaby United and they came home with the points with a 6-2 win. Denaby’s two goals were scored by Light. Mosborough Trinity were host to Royston Oakwood, hoping to pick up points to lift them up the table, but it was not to be as Royston won by 3-2, Dolman and Cartwright with Mosborough goals. Thorncliffe and Doncaster Over 35s had a rare old battle with goals galore the game finishing 4-4. Elson 3 and Burgin for Thorncliffe, D.Stenson 2, M.Stenson and Jones for the visitors. DIVISION 2 Clowne Wanderers lost 3-1 at home to Top
Goals from Mark Luty, Joe Sidebottom and Luke Sykes gave Wombwell Main Development a 3-0 win over United Worksop at Manton Athletic Sports Club.
Division Two League leaders Swinton Athletic Reserves fell to their fifth loss of the season, as slipped to a 3-0 loss away against Frecheville. The win is Frecheville’s fourth in a row in the league and takes them into fifth place. A brace from Yaya Dembele inspired Sheffield FC Reserves to a 4-1 away win over Bank End AFC. Brandon Burke and Joe Lumley were also on target for Sheffield, as they go to within three points of leaders Swinton, whilst having two games in hand. Mark Lynch scored a hat-trick for South Elmsall United Services in their 7-1 win over Burngreave FC Reserves at Firvale Academy. South Elmsall are six points shy of Swinton, have five games spare. Club AFC Dronfield by 3-1, Pindar 2 and Brewster for the victors and Heath for Clowne. East Herringthorpe who lie 4th in the division were against High Green Vets who are second from bottom but credit to High Green they battled all the way and came away with a creditable draw 3-3. Hughes, Longmore and Dixon scoring their goals. Hollingwood Old Boys travelled to play Joker but it was Joker who had the last laugh with a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Ingam. 45s DIVISION 1 HSBC Bank Vets suffered only their second defeat of the season at the hands of Mosborough Trinity by 3-1, the victors scorers were Dawes, Tyler and Wade, Banks consolation was a goal from Brookes. 45s DIVISION 2 Hallam 1860 Old Boys maintained top spot with a 5-1 win against Dronfield Town Red, Fox 3, N.Milnes, J.Milnes scoring for the winners. Sheffield Aurora who were bottom of the league a few weeks ago visited Denaby United and secured a 1-0 win with a goal from Ball.

WE DESERVED TO WIN THAT GAME The Owls and Birmingham played out a 3-3 thriller at St Andrew’s but Garry Monk was left with a familiar feeling of frustration. Wednesday turned in a significantly improved performance in the Midlands but suffered stoppage time heartbreak by conceding a last-gasp leveller. Monk told swfc.co.uk: “We deserved all
three points from that game. The players gave everything they had and we should be going home with a win. “Football can be a cruel game and today it was cruel. We showed the character to come back twice and then get in front but we’ve conceded with the last kick. “It’s really disappointing because we’re in a resultsbased business and we haven’t won again so
there will be criticism, I get that. “But in terms of the performance, we were very good and more like the team that were third in the table at Christmas. “There are positives to take, we scored three goals, we controlled a lot of the ball but Birmingham were never going to give up and we leave here with a bittersweet taste.”
ON LOAN OWL PENNEY STARS IN HAMBURG DERBY Matt Penney put his name in the St Pauli history books on Saturday by scoring a memorable goal in the Hamburg derby. The 22-year-old, who is away from Hillsborough on a season long loan, was named in the starting line-up as St Pauli travelled to city rivals Hamburg in Bundesliga 2. The odds were stacked in the favour of a home win, with Hamburg well in the mix for promotion and a return to the top flight. But St Pauli, who were without a win on the road in almost a year, stunned their bigger
rivals and picked up all three points with a 2-0 victory. Henk Veerman broke the deadlock after 20 minutes before Penney fired home his first professional goal in spectacular fashion. The ball fell at the feet of Penney some 25 yards from goal and the Owls loanee sent an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner to stun the 50,000 plus crowd at the Volksparkstadion. Penney has made 11 appearances this season for St Pauli under former Owls boss Jos Luhukay.

In wet and windy conditions Wednesday blew the Reds away in the opening minutes when Preston opened the scoring. The winger doubled his tally in the second half after team mate Alex Hunt was sent off and the Owls concluded a deserved win. Wednesday were off to the perfect start across South Yorkshire when Conor Grant’s ball over the top was well controlled by Preston, who calmly stroked the ball past Corey Addai. Just after the half-hour mark the home side should have equalised when Marsh forced a fine save from Josh Render and Javaun Splatt fired over from six yards. Barnsley grew into the game and Tommy Willard headed wide under pressure from Ryan Galvin. Wednesday’s raised the tempo in the second half and the in-form Preston his shot went over from a tight angle before the visitors were reduced to 10 men on 54 minutes. Hunt’s challenge on Jordan Barnett was deemed a sending-off offence by the referee and Barnsley began to pressure the depleted Owls. But Wednesday regrouped and made it 2-0 on 68 minutes. Render’s long punt upfield was allowed to bounce by the Reds’ defence, allowing Preston to shoot on the turn into the far corner and seal victory.

FLECK SIGNS NEW CONTRACT John Fleck has signed a new long-term contract to extend his stay at Bramall Lane until 2023. The midfielder has again been in sparkling form this season, being one of United’s standout performers on our return to the Premier League. The 28-year-old has been a major success story for boss Chris Wilder after joining the Blades in 2016 from Coventry City on a free transfer, when the club was still in League One. The former Rangers dynamo was named Player of the Year in his first full campaign
as United clinched the League One title, and he was also named in the PFA League One Team of the Year. After being crowned Player of the Year a second time the following year, his consistent displays helped United clinch promotion to the Premier League in 2018-19. This season he has again excelled, netting five goals so far, whilst he also earned his first cap for Scotland against Russia in a Euro 2020 qualifier. On the announcement of his new deal, Fleck told www.sufc.co.uk: “It is an
amazing club. It is one that I always wanted to be part of going forward. I’ve really enjoyed my time here since day one, so I didn’t see any reason why I wouldn’t want to be here at what is a really exciting time for the club. “We have been very
successful since the manager came in. Everyone has worked hard and had a good time here; it has been a great club to come to and I am delighted to be extending my stay.” Boss Chris Wilder added: “He’s been instrumental and
amazing in the way he’s stepped up through the divisions with us on our journey. “We want to keep our best players at the club and John is certainly one of them, so we are thrilled to get this one done. “His progression has
been outstanding in terms of his
performances through the divisions and now he’s doing it at the highest-level week in, week out and also gaining the recognition for his country as well.”

Sheffield United Women scored five for the second FA Women's Championship game running against Blackburn Rovers in their first game of the month. Weather conditions over the past few weeks meant Carla Ward's Blades had been as unlucky as any team in seeing games postponed, but the team responded as if they'd never been away. They got off to the perfect start as Jade Pennock scored two goals in quick succession to put the Blades 2-0 up with just 15 minutes gone. Her first came as Sophie Barker slotted her in on goal, Pennock doing the rest with a low finish past Fran Stenson. Four minutes later and Pennock had her second. Veatriki Sarri went on a superb run through the middle of the park and her effort from the edge of the box deflected into the path of Pennock who smashed a first time effort into the bottom corner. Blackburn though came back at the Blades and pulled a goal back shortly before half-time when Natasha Flint fired a low effort into the bottom corner from outside the box. Both sides had chances during a relatively end-toend first half, Emily Ramsey doing well to stop Flint's low effort while Maddy Cusack fired just over at the other end. The game turned when Rovers defender Kayleigh McDonald was shown a straight red card for dissent just seconds before half-time, allowing United to dictate the second half with their numerical advantage. The Blades came out rampant and had several chances to open up their lead again. Mollie Green struck the post before Olivia Fergusson was denied by a superb Stenson save and Wilkinson then too saw an effort tipped over. But the Blades number nine wasn't denied minutes later when she volleyed home after Sam Tierney did well to play Barker's cross back across goal. Green did get her goal, her second in as many games, when she was in the right place to slot home Alethea Paul's low cross, and the victory was complete late on when Rhema Lord-Mears bagged her first goal for the club against her former side with a close range finish, her first touch after coming on as a substitute.
