With this coming Sunday 8 March seeing the world

celebrate International Women’s Day, it comes at a time of huge excitement and momentum for women’s football. Bramall Lane is one of ten grounds which will stage UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 matches. The stadium will host four matches including a semi-final on

27 July – in what promises to be a record-breaking edition of the European tournament next summer. Central to the amazing fan experience as England hosts the competition will be the inspirational volunteers at each host venue. Now in its 13th edition, the UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 is making over

To pre-register interest in volunteering opportunities, as well for tickets, tournament news and competitions, please visit TheFA.com/WEURO2021. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure

DONCASTER JOINS COUNTRY’S BIGGEST MASS-ACTION ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGN Doncaster Council has pledged its support for this year’s Great British Spring Clean, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. The campaign, which runs from March 20 to April 13, will see up to 600,000 people taking action to clean up streets, parks and beaches across the country. The Great British

Spring Clean, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to show they love where they live and in 2019 more than half a million #LitterHeroes collected more than 900,000 bags of rubbish. As part of the ‘This is

My Doncaster – Keep it Clean’ campaign Doncaster Council staff and volunteers regularly hold action days to blitz local areas. Last year during the ‘spring clean’ a whopping 800 bags of rubbish collected by more than 450 willing volunteers. In conjunction with the Great British Spring Clean the council is looking for

even more willing volunteers to donate whatever time they have to help clean up litter from streets and parks while recycling as much as possible. Already over 100 groups across Doncaster have signed up on the website and pledged to do litter picks during the month long campaign and there is still time to organise your event.

Cllr Chris McGuinness, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We’d like to see people organising their own clean ups or joining pre-arranged litter picks as part of The Great British Spring Clean. All help is welcome in Doncaster’s fight against litter and environmental crime. We’re always happy to provide the support

and equipment that you need to participate in a litter pick whether with your friends, family or even while walking the dog. We will also dispose of all the waste you collect if you let us know when and where you are doing your event.” Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison OgdenNewton OBE said: “The overwhelming response to last year’s Great British

Spring Clean showed that there are many hundreds of thousands of people out there who love where they live and are prepared to take action to make it better for themselves, their families and their communities. “We are delighted that Doncaster Council is supporting this year’s campaign and would like to thank them for their support. “Without councils across the country

giving the campaign their backing, our volunteers would not be able to do the incredible job they do.” Register your support on the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ website or email anita.johnson@ doncaster.gov.uk and share your social media posts and photos on our @ MyDoncaster social media accounts using the #GBSpringClean hashtag.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

My dad was bragging about his new hearing aid. “State of the Art,” he said, “It cost me a fortune.” I asked: “Awesome what type is it? “ He said: “‘Two thirty.” According to my therapist, I have extreme trouble verbalizing my emotions. Can’t say I’m surprised. Yesterday I purchased a world map...gave my wife a dart and said to her “throw this and wherever it lands, I’m taking you for a holiday”. Turns out we’re spending three weeks behind the fridge. A guy walks into his doctors office saying, “Help me, doctor, I’m shrinking.” “Hold on,” says the doctor, “Be a little patient.” I called the doctor “My wife is going into labour! What should I do?” “Is this her first child?” he asked. “No, this is her husband.”

council sets balanced CALL 0151 334 2600 QUOTING ‘THE MERCURY’ budget for 2020 UK, EUROPE OR WORLDWIDE

Sheffield City Council has set a balanced budget for 2020/21 and is investing millions in to services across the city, a significant achievement following a decade of austerity. As well as investments into services that protect the most vulnerable in the city such as children and young people, the council is also focusing on improving Sheffield’s neighbourhoods, regenerating the city, and taking steps to tackle the climate crisis. Cllor Terry Fox said: “We have listened to the people of Sheffield and how they want us to invest in their city. Taking feedback from the Big City Conversation and our budget consultation we have developed plans to address the most prominent concerns and needs of our residents. We are improving people’s experience in Sheffield, be it their local neighbourhood, the parks and green spaces they visit, developing a vibrant city centre or the quality of the air we all breathe. We are also providing more money for our children and young people and more money for vulnerable adults so that everyone has the chance to lead healthy fulfilled lives. It’s a huge achievement.” A three year programme to make Sheffield’s streets safer and cleaner, will see £2.5 million invested to create better neighbourhoods, tackling waste, flytipping and graffiti problems, improving tenancy issues and addressing crime and anti-social behaviour. Demand on services for the most vulnerable in Sheffield and nationally has never been higher. To meet this demand and the increasing pressures on council services, a further £800k is being spent for key infrastructure to support care placements. Young people’s services will also receive an additional £2million this year to help meet the many challenges young people are now facing. energy-efficient features to help reduce Homeowners’ bills, such as full thermal insulation, double-glazing and costeffective heating. The monthly service and well-being charge covers 24-hour staffing, restaurant facilities, all Homeowner communal area cleaning, buildings insurance and garden maintenance. NEW BEGINNINGS FOR THOR-GODS OF ROCK WITH A NEW LINE UP There’s an old saying that states “as one door closes, another one opens.” That’s certainly been a saying that Sheffield’s own Thor-Gods Of Rock have been living by recently. A few weeks ago, after 6 years, two of the founder members, brothers James and Joe Tulley, told the rest of the band that they had decided that their time as Gods Of Rock hand come to an end. “We met in the local pub on the Monday night and James and Joe told us the news” explained front

man, Lee Dodge. “It was a real shock as they were founder members. But we always said, when it stops being fun, it’s time to step out of the limelight.” So how did the band feel at the thought of losing 2 members at the same time? Bass player, Phil Boyd told us “Obviously it’s difficult to take. I only joined Thor in April but, straight away, I got a real sense of family rather than just another band. So losing 2 members is like losing 2 family members.” So what next for the

biggest name on South Yorkshire Rock scene at the minute? Lee told us. “It’s a process we’ve been through before. A couple of years ago, Kev (Kevin Hill ex-guitarist) and Mike (Mike Kaperys ex-bassist) made the same decision and we were flooded with applications. This has been no different.” In fact the band had a plethora of applications on the day the announcement was made. “It all went a bit crazy to be honest” explained guitarist, John Hardman.

“Understandably, there were so many messages of sadness at the news. But we suddenly had message after message from people putting themselves forward. And some pretty well know faces from the club scene too.” So, when all said and done, who are the new Gods Of Rock? We’re sorry to say, the lads are playing their cards close to their chest. John smiled “you’ll have to wait and see. We’re not going to spoil the surprise, but we’re really looking forward to starting the new chapter of a Thor.” The 2 mystery new members make their first appearance when the boys travel to Ashby Mill Road Club in Scunthorpe (Friday 20th March) and Barnsley Trades Club (Saturday 21st March) before Sheffield gets its first taste of the new look Thor-Gods Of Rock the following week when Crookes Club feels

the power of Thor on Saturday 28th March. And the show at Crookes will be an extra special night for Thor’s lead singer. “It’ll be the first time my little boy will have been to a show. He’s only 6 weeks old so probably won’t realise what’s happening, or particularly care, but it’ll be special to have him there for the first time, especially with a new line up and at one of my absolute favourite places to play.” And there’s an extra special date back on the Thor schedule this year. On Saturday 8th August, Thor head back to Castleton to, in their words, “rock the rock” and “rave in a cave” at The Devils Arse cave. “It’s my favourite venue” said John. “We played there a couple of years ago and had a brilliant night. It’s such an unusual arena and an amazing atmosphere. It’s got a great novelty factor. We love it.” Tickets for this special

event are available from the event are available from the Peak Cavern website. Just head to www.peakcavern.co.uk select “Concerts and Events” and follow the link. So, it really is a case of onwards and upwards for the band, described by many, as the only real show band on the local music scene at the minute. With a reputation of huge hits, a spectacular lighting show, extravagant costumes and audience participation last seen in the golden age of clubland, Thor’s reputation is second to none. So they’re currently working hard in rehearsals to get the new members up to speed as well as add some new material to the show already packed with high energy, hard hitting anthems from somebody he worlds biggest bands. If you’d like more information on ThorGods Of Rock, head

over to their Facebook page; www.Facebook. com/ThorRockSheffield where you can check out their schedule, enquire

about booking me and keep up to date with what’s happening with Sheffield’s own ThorGods Of Rock.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

So far, my pike season has been mediocre at best, with perhaps fifty fish caught, and nothing over 20lbs this year, so a final flurry was on the cards this week. I opted for a club venue which required a half hour drive, loaded the van the night before, made sure the freshest freezer baits were selected, and after waking, jumped in the van to set off to the lake. On the way, I remembered a different club water much closer to home, and if I’m honest, I didn’t really know what was in it but decided to give it a go. I knew it contained pike as I’ve had a walk around with the lure rod and caught plenty of fish to around 10lbs, but I hadn’t heard of anything bigger… I parked up just five minutes after setting out, the sun peeping over the horizon gave indications of a pleasant day (at last!) and the barrow was quickly rolled down the ramp ready to go. My first job was to unload it all, then push it all over the fence before hoisting the barrow over and reloading it, before being dragged down the steep hill to the water’s edge; I certainly wasn’t looking forward to pushing it all back up! The pool had been recently flooded, so not all pegs were fishable and as a result, I selected a fairly mud free peg which gave me access to plenty of water. In summer, the pool is flecked by lilies, I’d noted their positions thinking they may provide ambush cover for pike in winter, so I deliberately set up

within casting range. The usual two rod set up was quickly deployed, a couple of ounces of lead anchoring each deadbait and I sat back to enjoy my first brew in the morning sunshine. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been yearning to feel the sun on my back for what seems like weeks, and it was blissful to actually feel some warmth for a change. I sat peacefully watching a resident kingfisher flit by my rods and enjoyed buzzards as they soared aloft but was brought back to the world by a couple of bleeps on the alarm. I watched the rod tip nod twice, so released the line from the clip and pinched it between my fingers to see if I could feel anything. A minute passed, but nothing developed, so the smelt was wound in, injected with Baitbox herring oil, and flung back out towards the pads. My other rod was also recast, the roach replaced with half a sardine and both were tightened up. After an hour or so, a fellow angler appeared, and we enjoyed a short discussion about the possibility of larger pike. He reckoned a 20lb fish was potentially catchable but I wasn’t convinced; I’d seen nothing from any social media posts to indicate it, and was resigned to a day catching jacks, but it gave me something to ponder as he moved off to try for carp. As the morning progressed, I moved and changed my baits every hour, leapfrogging them across the swim to cover the maximum amount of water and explore every likely spot, but had no further interest. Fresh baits were rigged, punched back

out and I sat with yet another mug of tea whilst listening to beautiful birdsong and enjoyed the glorious sunshine. I head one particularly shrill, repetitive song, then realised that it was actually my alarm emitting a series of short staccato bleeps as the rod tip twitched! I hit the run immediately and was delighted to feel firm pressure at the other end which turned into a full scale scrap as a hefty predator made efforts to escape! As I’ve mentioned, I hadn’t expected anything much bigger than a low double, but when this one surfaced, it looked much better than anything I’d seen reported, so I was careful to tire it properly to prevent any last second lunges at the net! A few minutes later, and a very fat pike lay on the mat! She was covered with leeches but otherwise in perfect health, the trebles were quickly removed from the roof of her maw, and I slipped the fish into the weigh sling. I’d already zeroed the scales with the wet sling, and having been recently serviced by Reuben Heaton, I knew I’d get an accurate reading, so was very pleased when the dial spun around to 19lb 8oz! Not quite the 20lb fish we’d talked about, but it was a cracking result on a beautiful day, and after a few quick snaps, she was slipped back into the depths to fight another day. After I’d cleaned the mat, both rods were recast, and as I set the bobbins, I disturbed a pike laying in the margins which tore off leaving a swirl in its wake. The roach deadbait was quickly retrieved and I gently laid it in the margins and sat well back to watch the line, hoping for a second fish. I watched the rod tip for another hour before the line twitched but was delighted to watch the indicator fall and line spool off the reel as a second run developed. This time it was a much smaller fish of perhaps 5-6lbs, but again in excellent condition and fighting fit. The semi-

barbed trebles fell out in the net, and this one was photographed on the mat purely for future reference before it too was returned. Two runs had seen two smashing pike on the bank, but it was time to pack up and go home. After a day in the sun, I was in a much better mood, and was absolutely over the moon with the first fish which had shown the true potential of an underrated water… I wonder if there are any bigger… I might have to have another go, but I’ll have to do some work in the gym before I try pushing the barrow back up that hill again, it was horrendous!

IT WAS AN ‘OFF DAY’ - WARNE Millers boss Paul Warne admitted that he was “hugely disappointed” with his side’s reversal at the hands of Rochdale – with his team slipping to just their second defeat in 16 games. Former Rotherham loanee Ian Henderson came back to haunt his former club with a well-taken double, either side of the break, before Matthew Lund added a third for ‘Dale. Jamie Lindsay’s first goal for the Millers was scant consolation for the visitors – who were without the services of defensive lynchpins

Michael Ihiekwe and Joe Mattock, due to injury. Speaking to the assembled press corps afterwards, Warne conceded that it was a day to forget for all those with a Rotherham United persuasion. “Overall, I was disappointed obviously.” Warne noted. “We had a good following here today and they did not deserve to watch that. We came here to win but a few of the lads had an off day which is the nicest way to put it. “We had a few changes across the backline

and we did not look as organised as we have done.” With the Millers trailing to Henderson’s opener, Warne’s side looked on course to go into the break on level terms through Ben Wiles’ goalbound header but with Michael Smith turning the ball home, en-route to the goal – the effort was ruled out with the Millers frontman in an offside position. Warne added that the moment proved crucial in the final reckoning – with the Millers facing strong secondhalf resistance from the hosts, who proved worthy winners in the end. “It summed our day up that Wilsey’s header was going in but Smudge touches it and it’s an offside goal.” Warne added. “It would have been 1-1 at half time and I would have fancied us in the second half. I’ve seen it before where players touch it when it’s going in

but he’s got to take it because he has a defender behind him. It’s a strikers’ instinct to get a touch but it was unfortunate for us.” Following the reversal in Lancashire, the Millers are hanging onto second spot in the League One table by their fingertips – with just three points separating Warne’s side and Wycombe Wanderers, in eighth position, but Warne insists his side still have all to play for. “We haven’t turned into a bad team overnight.” Warne added. “We’ve been amazing away from home this season but it was not our day. “We are still second. We have got nine cup finals left so it may be a good kick for the lads. “It’s tight and it’s exciting for everyone. All the teams are looking to get to the Championship.”

maximum points. “I’m pleased with the three points because Stadium MK is a difficult arena,” said Moore. “MK Dons have got a tremendous home record and you can see why it’s so impressive - they manage the ball really well. We knew we had to be patient and do our defensive work off the ball. “It’s a creditable three points for the players.” While Rovers started slowly, they put in an

impressive second half display and Moore praised Ramsey who made no mistakes to make sure he capitalised on one of the match’s few chances. “When I look back over the match, there was only really one chance and we took it,” said Moore “In the first half, it felt like we were sitting back and waiting. At half time I asked for a bit more a bit more energy and intensity

and a bit more game knowhow. We said let’s come out of here with no regrets and the second half was a lot, lot better.” “Jacob can feel pleased with his afternoon’s work. He showed good control with his feet and he contributed with the goal. He’s got a great ability to arrive late in the box and when he does arrive, he gets good contact on the ball.”

pleased with how he took his goal. “I’d had a chance earlier on in the second half when I got one-onone with the keeper but the defender managed to get back and block the shot, but it was some good play down the right, Jon Taylor’s pulled it back and I’ve scored with a first time finish,” he said. “I was pleased with how I took my goal, it was a good finish, if there’s one thing about this team it’s that they’re always going to create chances, if I don’t score with my first one I’ll look to score with my second. “It was a good feeling getting another goal, and it’s even better

when it’s in front of the away fans as well, it was a good team goal with some good play early on and I was happy to finish it off.” Ramsey’s third goal since joining on loan in January ensured Rovers made it back-to-back wins in Sky Bet League One, and he felt the effort from everyone in the team after the break helped them to get the three points over the line. “It was a difficult game, we didn’t see too much of the ball in the first half and we only had one really chance just before the break, the gaffer said about getting more possession in the

second half and take our chances which we did,” he added. “We came out after half-time and we wanted to make sure we stopped them from playing, we stuck together and the intensity was miles better, we all got each other through it and deserved to win in the end. “We needed all 11 players on the pitch to help get us over the line, and Seny pulled off a good save at the end as well, we’re all buzzing to respond with back-to-back wins, but we’ll be looking to make that three in a row next weekend.”

LET THE CLUB MONK “LOST FOR WORDS” WE’VE DOWN - BANNAN Garry Monk reflected on a bleak afternoon at Brentford and for the first time in his career was ‘lost for words.’ Wednesday tumbled to a 5-0 defeat in the capital in a game to forget for the visitors and Monk had nothing but sympathy for the travelling fans from Sheffield. He said: “I’m lost for words after that it’s the first time I can say that in my career. The only thing I can say

to the fans is that I apologise, they should not have to see a performance like that. “It was embarrassing and I’m tired of sitting here saying the same things, listening to my own voice. “The players train well every day, we have meetings individually and collectively, all the right things are said and then we see that. “Brentford are a good side but we made them look good.”

Barry Bannan gave an honest post-match assessment following a day to forget at Brentford on Saturday. The Owls were well beaten 5-0 in the capital to extend the poor run of form in the Championship. The midfielder said: “Not good enough, obviously. “We’ve let the club down, let the fans down, let the badge down. “There’s not much else I can say really, it was terrible. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, us as players have to start taking the blame now. The manager works hard, day in, day out. “It might always come from me, it might sound boring but it’s us on the pitch now. “You can’t go from playing as well as we did the other night against Manchester City, to coming here today and losing 5-0. It’s not acceptable.” Bannan continued: “Nobody in that changing of the foot. feed for Preston, who The Wednesday keeper room can look themselves in the mirror Williams was then at expertly controlled and denied the same player tonight, we didn’t show up today and that’s what will happen in this league if you don’t. the heart of the action finished low into the far with 15 minutes on the offensive, “The gaffer has been more than fair with corner. remaining, diving aiming a dipping volley Again the Blades hit people, he’s given everyone a chance. acrobatically to divert that almost caught out Everyone in the changing room can hold their back, this time with the striker’s wellRender and the keeper Young brushing the placed drive. hands up and say they’ve had a chance. was relieved to see the top of the net with a Ciaran Brennan hooked “Our job as players is to go out and win games ball drop past the past. clever angled effort and a Nicksoen Gomis for this club and we’re not doing it at the The Owls pushed the visitors went close snapshot off the line minute.”

23S HIT BACK TO SEAL SHEFFIELD DERBY WIN The Owls Under-23s completed a derby double after coming from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1. Leo Gaxha opened the scoring but Fraser Preston struck twice to give the Owls the points. The Owls made a bright start, with Preston going for goal as early as the first minute. The forward was on the end of a Josh Dawodu cross but Tommy Williams cleared at the last. Possession was then shared until 19 minutes when the Blades hit the front from their first attack. Zak Brunt threaded a throughball for the advancing Gaxha, who slotted calmly past Josh Render with the outside

forward ahead of half time and levelled almost on the whistle. Conor Grant played a fine ball into the path of Preston and the wideman slotted beneath Jake Eastwood from just inside the area. United responded immediately after the break when Jake Young shaved the outside of the post from distance before Wednesday went 2-1 up on 52 minutes. Liam Shaw delivered a defence-splitting

again moments later when Gaxha forced a super save from Render.

with United pushing for an equaliser that never came and the Owls emerged triumphant.

CHANCE OF A LIFETIME! The Owls’ televised FA Cup fifth round clash with Manchester City last week saw 22 Wednesday youngsters live the dream of walking down the tunnel and out onto the pitch in front of the nation! Ahead of the big game, the Owls held a cup-style draw to select Player Escorts for the clash against the champions of England and holders of the FA Cup. After announcing the free competition to win this special experience, Wednesday received almost 500 entries from Season Ticket holders and Junior Members. All those aged between 5-12 went into the draw which took place one week before the game at Hillsborough and was conducted by BBC presenter Dan Walker. Then… onto the night. All 22 arrived in good time in S6 to make the very most of their special occasion. As the referee’s bell sounded five minutes before kick-off, the young Owls fans lined up in the tunnel as both the Wednesday and Manchester City players received their final instructions in the changing rooms. First out were the substitutes of City, including the likes of Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden, who made sure to say hello to the excited Wednesdayites in the tunnel! They were soon followed by the Manchester City starting XI, who likewise didn’t let their pre-game focus get in the way of one or two light-hearted exchanges! Then came the Owls, each of whom walked down the tunnel accompanied by two Player Escorts, ready for the pre-match line-ups and centre circle photo in front of the Hillsborough crowd and live on BBC1. A night to remember for those young Owls!

BLADES IMPRESS OFF THE FIELD GAFFER NOMINATED Sheffield United are riding high in the Premier League, both on and off the field. The Blades have been placed in seventh spot in a ‘Matchday Fan Experience Survey’ that has been conducted on behalf of the Premier League and completed by almost 3,000 Blades fans and nearly 40,000 supporters across all clubs. The research that has been conducted between October 2019 and January 2020, has highlighted that 100% of United supporters feeling positive about the club and 97% having warmth towards

the Blades, compared to an average of just 44% across the other 19 topflight clubs, with 90% in agreement United are well run. The club are in the top three for overall matchday experience, match atmosphere and stadium announcements, whilst also being mid-table or above for the matchday programme, WiFi, phone signal and welcoming atmosphere. The Blades scored 76.7 out of 100 overall, 5% above the league average of 71.5. Based out of five, the club scored a maximum on positivity, 4.8 on match

atmosphere, 4.6 for the overall matchday experience and 4.2 towards stadium announcements. Also highlighted in the survey was that the majority of those who visit with children described Bramall Lane as a ‘child-friendly environment’ (81%), compared to the divisional average of 69%. Blades fans were more than 80% positive to club employers, including ticket office assistants, stewards and search staff. Supporters were also very positive, more so than many fans of other clubs, when it came to the ethos and traditions of United, in addition to fan engagement, scoring 95% and 90% respectively in those aforementioned areas over 20% up on rival clubs. www.sufc.co.uk received some excellent feedback, with 77% positive about the club’s website and 67% happy with how the

Blades communicate with fans via social media. Community initiatives received plenty of praise too, with 81% of the opinion the club already makes a significant contribution to the local community, with the vast majority believing this is an important part of the culture and philosophy of Sheffield United. Operations Director Dave McCarthy remarked: “We are happy with the results, for what is our first season back in the Premier League, and we need to be proud of it, but as a club we won’t rest on our laurels. “All club staff work extremely hard to deliver the best possible matchday experience and so the results of the survey are a reward for their endeavours. We realise there are areas that we need to work on and as such, we will take on board all feedback contained in this survey.”

Chris Wilder has been nominated for the Barclays Manager of the Month award for February. The Blades picked up seven points from nine last month, with victories over Crystal Palace and Bournemouth followed by a draw against Brighton & Hove Albion. Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of Manchester United accumulated identical records to Wilder’s side, whilst Burnley’s Sean Dyche saw his side secure eight points from a possible 12. LEVEL PLAYING FIELD - MEET THE SHEFFIELD SPORTS COMMENTARIES TEAM United were thrilled to mark Level Playing Field’s 2020 Weeks of Action by showcasing the vital work undertaken by the Sheffield Sports Commentaries team. Level Playing Field highlights the positive initiatives undertaken by clubs, sporting venues and their governing bodies in partnership with disabled sports fans and disabled supporters’ associations (DSAs). This season’s ‘Weeks of Action’ took place between 29th February and 15th March, and before Saturday’s home game with Norwich, United’s matchday programme, UTB, caught up with Sheffield Sport Commentaries’ volunteers Jonathan Haigh and Terry Sweet to discuss the vital work of those making sport as enjoyable as possible for visually-impaired and other disabled supporters. This year marks Sheffield Sports Commentaries’ 70th anniversary with Terry explaining the volunteer-lead group has come a long way from humble beginnings. “Years ago, we would sit with a blind or visually impaired person, and you spoke about what was happening directly to them,” said Terry. “Of course, this had to happen in a designated area. There was no technology or headsets at that time, but over the years, there have been developments. Now supporters can pick up a headset and listen to us anywhere in stadium which of course means they can sit with their pals.” The service is available at every home matchday at Bramall Lane, as well as across the city at Hillsborough, and as Jonathan points out it is not just visually impaired supporters who can benefit from the service. “It’s a free service and easily accessible,” explains Jonathan. “Our aim is to spread the message and increase the numbers of those listening. We have around 10-15 people using it at the moment, but we’d like to see that grow. “It is not just people who are visually impaired who can use the service. There are those with conditions which might find the head set helpful to block out the noise. I know that people with autism or dementia can really benefit from something like this.” Finally, Jonathan and Terry wanted to thank the clubs and volunteers for the continued support in providing what is a crucial matchday service. “I’d like to thank the clubs for all the support and access they give us,” said Jonathan. “I have to mention our colleagues Andy Willis and Callum Cheswick, and also Phil Riley who is the longest serving member of our team. There’s also Mark Rothman, George Smith and Ben Ruth who are involved with us.” Terry adds: “We have a regular listener at Bramall Lane, and they also tell us if there are any technical issues. Alan Clarke is the man who does this at United and at Hillsborough it is Sally McCauge. Special mention to those two for their help.” To pick up a headset on a matchday couldn’t be easier. They can be collected from either John Street or South Stand reception and returned there after the match.
