PLANS FOR CULTURAL HEART IN CITY CENTRE REGENERATION SCHEME Exciting plans to retain a significant amount of heritage and create a new ‘cultural heart’ in the Council’s Heart of the City II development were unveiled today. Block H, which is located on the site between Wellington Street, Carver Street and Cambridge Street, will provide a wideranging development split into three distinct elements (H1, H2 and H3). A period of public consultation on H2 and H3 begins today, ahead of a planning submission this Spring. H2 will be a brand-

new building offering approximately 70,000 sq ft of Grade A office space, split across seven upper floors and boasting an impressive south facing roof terrace, with retail and food and beverage units on the ground floor. The visually striking, darkcoloured metal building will take inspiration from Sheffield’s celebrated industrial past. H2 has been designed to minimise operational energy, emitting around 40% less carbon than a typical Building Regulations compliant design. This efficiency will

also continue to improve as the embodied carbon in the electricity grid reduces. In contrast, the development for H3 (to be known as Cambridge Street Collective) will be aiming to retain as much of the quality, existing fabric and façades along Cambridge Street and Wellington Street as feasible – helping to attractively balance the old and new across the site. Proposals for Cambridge Street Collective include a large, industrial-style space, which would be perfectly suited to a food hall or similar sociable, communal

offer. Wrapping this space would be complementary shops, a bar and restaurant, and an upper level leisure space. The existing Bethel Chapel building will also be renovated, with plans for this to become a live entertainment venue. Although not part of this planning application, the site is also home to Leah’s Yard (H1) – a Grade II* Listed building housing a collection of small former industrial workshops. Plans are still at an early stage, however there is a real desire from the project team to maintain the building’s

unique Sheffield character by providing similar workshops for the city’s next creative generation. In the meantime, Listed Building Consent is being sought to undertake the structural works required to make the buildings secure. The Block H site occupies a prime location in the wider Heart of the City II scheme. Directly linking to the attractive new public spaces of Charter Square and upcoming Five Ways, it will sit comfortably alongside Grosvenor House and Isaacs Building. Public consultation for H2 and H3 runs 12 March-7 April, with public drop-in sessions, at the former Clicks and Mortar shop on Pinstone Street, taking place on 25 March (15:3019:00) and 26 March (11:00-16:00).

It remains the case that whilst some of our young people enjoy the best opportunities and school results in the country, far too many are still coming out of school without a pass grade in maths and English, school exclusions are too high, mental and emotional health is a growing challenge and there are still too many young people not in education, employment or training. This means that whilst some people are growing up in our city in some of the most affluent parts of the country, others are growing up facing more challenges and we must do more to support them. However, this is not just about educational attainment, it is the wider set of skills- the more social and emotional ‘soft’ skills that are essential in coping with the challenges you face throughout your life. The additional £2million will help us to meet these challenges.” The strategy follows extensive consultation with young people, youth workers, and local charities and partners. Julie Dore continued: “After talking to young people we want to make sure that our services work for them. To do this we will join up our services and bring them into one integrated model so that the needs of young people are at the heart of our efforts. After all, they are our future.”

For guests: In the first instance, guests should accept, or decline, the wedding invitation by the RSVP date stipulated on the invite. Once you accept, you are obliged to attend - no last minute changing of plans

(unless there is an emergency of course!). When choosing an outfit, remember it’s the bride’s day, and as a guest you must not outshine her. Wearing white or anything remotely bridal is a big no-no, while wearing black is equally insulting. It is also considered polite for guests to buy the couple a gift, often from a gift list compiled by the bride and groom prior to their wedding. For bride and groom:

The groom and his best man should arrive at the venue at least 20 minutes prior to the ceremony’s start. The bride travels to the church with her father. The father of the bride also has the responsibility of making the first speech, and traditionally he should be the last person to leave the reception. At the reception, the groom is expected to introduce his bride to any friends or family she has not met before. He

must also always thank the bride’s parents in his speech and include a toast to the bridesmaids. Seating your guests however, is perhaps the toughest task when it comes to etiquette, and tackling the top table can be particularly tricky! A traditional format seats the bride and groom together in the centre. The bride is seated on the groom’s left. To the bride’s left is her father, the groom’s mother,

and the best man. To the groom’s right is the bride’s mother, the groom’s father, and chief bridesmaid. If you have a more ‘unconventional’ family arrangement, feel free to adapt the setup in order to best suit your needs. The cutting of the cake should take place after the speeches, and guests should not take to the floor until the bride and groom have had their first dance.

SHEFFIELD ARTIST PETE McKEE SERVES UP A NIGHT OF ENTERTAINMENT AT THE LEADMILL White Rabbit Events and the McKee gallery are proud to present a fundraiser evening of conversation and entertainment with

artist Pete McKee on Friday 20th April at 7pm at Sheffield’s The Leadmill . All proceeds from this event will be donated to the

charity Support Dogs. The evening hosted by Ben Thornton will consist of a talk with Pete who will discuss his Sheffield

upbringing and how this shaped the content of his work. He will also share stories about his exhibitions, collaboration highs

and lows and share insights into his future artistic projects. In addition to the talk there will be a drawing masterclass with Pete and the opportunity to own a special one-off piece of McKee artwork. Guests will also be served a pie and pea supper. Tickets are priced at £26 per person and are are now on general sale. The Leadmill website at www.leadmill.co.uk ‘I greatly admire the work Support Dogs does and am honoured to be involved in their

upcoming fundraising event. As well as raising awareness about the excellent work Support Dogs do, we will also hopefully raise a few bob for this noble cause. I’m looking forward to having a good old chat about my work, Sheffield and my upbringing. We may even try to attempt to do a piece of artwork on the night, as well as enjoy veggie pies, peas with a dash of Hendo’s!’ - Pete McKee Tickets available now from leadmill. co.uk

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve been doing a bit of investigation this week, mainly as a result of being extremely dissatisfied with a product I bought last month and also because I’m amazed at the sheer amount of absolute garbage on the market aimed at anglers. Don’t believe me? Read on… I recently used an umbrella, purchased from a well known discount sporting goods retailer to be found on the high street. I bought it because it was raining, for the princely sum of just £6. It’s a golf umbrella, plain black and that’s it. You can imagine my amazement then to find that the exact same umbrella had been ‘produced’ by an angling company, the very same in all aspects with the addition of a ‘carpy’ logo and ‘almost two years in development’. The price? Well, it’s now available for the extortionate sum of £34.99! It’s also now described as ‘tactical roaming brolly’ for use when ‘scoping out the lake to find fish’. In other words, when it’s raining, and you’re walking about before you set up… ridiculous! Every angler I know who goes out in the rain either has waterproof clothing or gets wet. I’ve NEVER seen one using a natty golf brolly, especially not one that costs almost £35! With that in mind, I happened to spot a collapsible washing up bowl in my local Wilko’s and thought that it may be useful for fishing if you are tight for space and need to mix up a load of bait on the bank, but I also noted it so I could photograph it with the intention of a sarcastic social media post to highlight excessive costs. I shared the image of my £6 wonder bait bowl alongside a suitably witty caption and sat back to wait

for a response. Within minutes, someone had posted an image on my timeline of the exact same bowl (even down to the colour) but it now had an angling brand on it. The price? Yup, yours for just £24.99! A rise of almost £19! Can you believe it? I’ve said for years that anglers are being ripped off, and the more research I do, the more it worries me! I truly believe that the angling trade is really struggling to come up with ideas at the moment. I‘ve seen a mat to protect your feet as you run from bivvy to your rods (it’s basically a plastic/rubber sheet) camouflage bags to ‘put your bags in’ and as I’ve previously mentioned, a £65 selfie stick with spirit level for perfect selfies… it is madness. There is no research and development in a collapsible bait bowl, you just have to contact the supplier, ask for a logo to be added, and inflate the price for your market; it’s unfair to anglers, especially when the manufacturers are crying out for new blood in angling. When was the last time that someone came up with something really innovative and useful? It’s no wonder youngsters don’t go fishing, the manufacturers have made it so complicated and so expensive that it perplexes the novice so much that why would they bother? How many times have you seen something described as ‘essential’ these days? It isn’t, you need a rod, a pint of maggots and a few extras and you’re fishing. I remember the days I could carry everything I needed, now I require a barrow to transport it, and a van to put it in! I’ve been looking for a new stainless steel flask, but at £44.99, I wanted value for money, not branding and marketing. I visited the Companies House website to check out the supplier, spent a few minutes looking at import notices, and contacted the Chinese manufacturer named on the invoice. If I was to order 1000 units, the manufacturer offered

me the same flask at just £4.65 per unit which included shipping, a total of £4650 give or take a bit of import duty. Compare that with the UK selling price of the branded flask (I could have had my own logo added for a few pence more) which accrues £44,990, almost ten times the purchasing price and you can see what I mean. Yes, I understand there are associated costs with actually getting the product on the shelves, but really? Ten times the purchase price? I bought a cheap flask without a logo and paid £15. It keeps my tea warm for a whole day session, and I don’t feel as though I’ve been unduly robbed…for a change. It has to stop, but I fear it won’t until anglers stop putting up with it…

under review. We will continue to work closely with the EFL and follow their advice on this subject which remains under constant review and we will ensure that our supporters are kept informed on the matter with information as we receive it. In line with all other

clubs, our priority is and will remain, the health and well-being of our supporters, players and staff. Please keep checking the official website and other official club outlets for updates. The club will be making no further comment on the subject at this time.

FUN FAIR CANCELLED Rotherham United can confirm that Garry Evans’ Mega Value Fun Fair has now been cancelled and it will no longer be taking place at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The amusements were set to open on Thursday 19th March and run to Sunday 22nd March 2020, but due to the ongoing concerns surrounding Coronavirus, the fun fair will not be going ahead. A new date for the event will be announced in due course.

Rovers’ matches in Sky Bet League One until April 3 have been postponed by the EFL in reaction to the coronavirus pandemic. The FA, Premier

League, EFL and Barclays FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship have collectively agreed to postpone the professional game. This includes Academy and youth team fixtures. Rovers chief executive Gavin Baldwin said: “Senior staff here at Club

Doncaster have been planning for every eventuality so we are prepared for this, and will continue to discuss how this affects us across all our operations. “While no one wants to see disruption to the sporting calendar, our absolute priority is protecting the health and wellbeing of our employees,

supporters and communities. “This is a unique situation and we are seeking advice from the highest levels as to the implications for us and fans as a result of this.”

RAMSEY WINS MARCH GOAL OF THE MONTH

Jacob Ramsey’s goal against MK Dons on March 7 which earned Rovers a 1-0 win and their tenth league clean sheet of the season has been voted as March goal of the month on twitter with 100% of the

vote. It was the only goal scored in March with all later games postponed in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite it being the only goal scored in this month, it was well worthy

of the accolade. Beginning with some smart play by Seny Dieng, including a sublime through ball by Brad Halliday, excellent pace from Jon Taylor and a great finish by Jacob Ramsey.

Tickets already purchased will remain valid for any rearranged fixtures.

MONK: IT’S FOR THE GREATER GOOD Garry Monk has underlined the importance of football closing down until April at the earliest in light of the Coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe. The EFL, in line with the Premier League, announced the decision to which Monk fully concurs on Friday morning. He told swfc.co.uk: “It’s the right decision without a doubt. We have to follow the advice of the authorities, obviously it’s not just here, it’s around the world, so it was probably

inevitable. “It’s an unprecedented situation, so we’re going into the unknown. We can only do what we are guided to do. “It’s for the greater good, health is the most important thing of everyone and that’s far bigger than football.” The Owls’ next fixture currently scheduled is the visit to Swansea on Saturday 4 April following the planned resumption. In the meantime the players will train and prepare as normal with the knowledge of a minimum three-

week wait before again crossing the white line. Monk added: “At the moment, our next game will be Swansea, and this doesn’t change our preparation. “It’s obviously an extended period of three weeks, but we’ll train as normal and we’ve already put a schedule together. “We have to maintain fitness and training. Right now we are told our next game is Swansea and we need to make sure we are ready for that game working around these circumstances.”

JONES SET FOR GREAT NORTH RUN Former Owls skipper Rob Jones is scheduled to take on the Great North Run in September raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK. The ex-central defender, who captained the Owls to promotion from League One in 2011/12, is determined to beat his time of 1 hour 40 minutes from last year’s half marathon. The run is pencilled in for Sunday 13 September and Rob says he is looking forward to the challenge.

Rob said: “I did the run last year and it was tough. “I’m determined to beat my time this year, I should do because I didn’t train last time! “It never leaves you from being a player, that competitiveness and determination and I’m looking forward to it.” The Wednesdayite is supporting Prostate Cancer UK due to the charity’s connection with football, which Rob remembers well from his playing career. He added: “I’ve chosen to do this for Prostate

Cancer because from my playing days it was always something that was promoted by clubs. “I wanted to do

something a bit more than just wear the PCUK badge, which is what we did as players, and I know a lot of

NEW DEAL FOR ENDA Popular wing-back Enda Stevens has signed a new long-term contract to extend his stay at Bramall Lane until 2023. The Republic of Ireland international has been in excellent form this season, one of United's most consistent performers in the Premier League to date. The 29-year-old has evolved under boss Chris Wilder and his staff, having joined the Blades on a free transfer from Portsmouth in the summer of 2017, having just won the League Two title. The former Aston Villa man was a key member of United's promotion-winning side last season and this term he has been a near ever-present for the Blades and a regular starter for his country when available. Stevens has excelled in the top-flight, netting two goals in 28 appearances, including a goal of the month contender against Brighton and Hove Albion last month. On the announcement of his new deal, Stevens told www.sufc.co.uk: "I'm obviously delighted. It's something I've wanted do get done for a while now, so I'm just pleased it's finally over the line. "As a group we've built on the success of last season, but we don't want to stand still. We want to continue to do well and finish as high in the table as possible. "The manager is building something special here. He's keeping the core group together and now adding to it to make us even stronger and everyone is happy to be involved in the journey." Boss Chris Wilder added: "Enda has become one of the top players in the division, in his position, in our opinion, and he deserves rewarding with a new contract, that's what we're trying to do at the moment. "His performances have been outstanding for both club and country and he is an important and integral part of our team in and out of possession."
