Parts of Sheffield City Centre temporarily Pedestrianised to encourage active travel Pinstone Street will be closed to traffic in the next fortnight as Sheffield City Council implements a variety of measures across the city to ensure safe social distancing and encourage walking and cycling. Footpath widening has already been introduced in many areas across the city to make it as safe as possible for people to travel on foot as we move into the next stages of lockdown. This next phase of works will see the introduction of road closures and cycle lanes,

designed to provide the infrastructure needed to encourage people to make significant changes to how they get around the city. A central part of the project is Pinstone Street in the city centre, where footpaths will be widened between Cross Burgess Street and Furnival Gate to support social distancing in a core part of the city centre. This will also include the full closure of Pinstone Street past the Peace Gardens to all traffic expect pedestrians and cyclists. These measures will initially be put in place

using temporary barriers, but will soon be replaced with a step-free pavement. Bus routes on this street will be diverted. Vehicle access from Furnival Gate into Pinstone Street (northbound) will remain open to ensure that the construction of key Heart of the City regeneration sites, and deliveries, can continue. As part of the Pinstone Street scheme, a complementary road closure of Upper Charles Street will also be introduced. This will provide widened

footpaths, cycle link, and the possibility for outside seating areas. Division Street has also been partly pedestrianised from Westfield Terrace to Rockingham Street (between the Frog and Parrot and the Great Gatsby.) . As temporary cycle lanes are introduced in the city centre, an initial additional 50 cycle spaces will also be created. In addition to the Shalesmoor Cycle link, which will provide a fully segregated cycle path between Shalesmoor

Roundabout and Corporation St, additional road closures will be implemented in Kelham to create a low traffic neighbourhood. All routes will still be open for people to walk and cycle to promote active travel in the Kelham and Neepsend Community. Outside of the city centre, changes to support social distancing, such as footpath widening, will also be introduced in communities across Sheffield, include Gleadless Town End, Manor Top, Frecheville, Chapeltown, Stocksbridge, Darnall, Hillsborough and Crookes.

Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping smoking

SHEFFIELD SOCIAL ENTERPRISE TO OFFER FREE EVENT TICKETS FOR NHS STAFF, FRONTLINE KEY WORKERS AND VOLUNTEERS Sheffield based social enterprise, the Tickets for Good Foundation, gives free event tickets to charities and social groups via the Ticket Bank platform. These tickets are then distributed to individual service users. During the COVID-19 epidemic they have launched the Virtual Ticket Bank, allowing free access to online events and resources. From

now until early 2021, they will be making all their physical and online donated tickets available to NHS staff, frontline key workers and volunteers. To apply for tickets or to donate tickets please visit this page – http://ticketsforgood.org Established just over a year ago, the Ticket Bank program has been a runaway success with thousands of people receiving free event tickets via charity partners across the UK. During this time they have collaborated with high profile event brands such as Tramlines Festival, O2 Academy venues and AEG Presents. The primary goal is to improve mental health and wellbeing through access to events and cultural activities. The COVID-19 pandemic is taking a mental toll on many people, with frontline staff particularly at risk. They have had to adapt to new practices in addition to caring for a huge number of new patients. When launching a mental health hotline for NHS workers, Prerana Issar (Chief People Officer for the NHS) said, ‘We need to do everything we can to support our incredible NHS people as they care for people through this global health emergency’. A first of its kind study, commissioned by Tickets for Good and the Ticket Bank, conducted by LifePsychol Ltd, demonstrated a clear link between

attending arts events and improving mental health (study here). Armed with this information, Tickets for Good and the Ticket Bank are using their revolutionary platforms to support and say thank you to NHS staff, key workers and volunteers for their tireless efforts in this time of national crisis. This action will also support venues, events and activity providers with a way to distribute free tickets to a deserving cohort. Although social distancing will likely be in place for some months, the event industry is looking at new ways of operating including outdoor theatre and other activities. Steve Rimmer founder and CEO of Tickets for Good said: I’m so proud to be able to launch this project to say thank you to all of the NHS staff, key workers and volunteers who are working so hard to help others (and the country) at this time of need. This is an easy way for the events and ticketing industry to give back whilst helping to open up the doors again, as soon as it’s safe to do so. It feels great to be using our business as a force for good and we look forward to helping as many people as we can to access donated tickets’

ALBERT SNODGRASS Has anyone elses gardening skills improved during this quarantine like mine have? I planted myself on the sofa at the start of April and I’ve grown bigger ever since. Have you ever seen a picture of Mount Rushmore before it was carved? It’s unpresidented. Will glass coffins be a success? Remains to be seen. Why did the wife divorce the baker? Because he was too kneady. My friend asked me if I wanted to hear a really good Batman impression, so I said go on then. He shouted, “NOT THE KRYPTONITE!” and I said, “That’s Superman...” “Thanks man,” he said, “I’ve been practising a lot.” I took my 8-year old girl to the office with me on, “Take Your Kid to Work Day.” As we walked around the office, she starting crying, so I asked what was wrong with her. As my colleagues gathered round she sobbed: “But daddy where are all the clowns you said you worked with?” My uncle was crushed by a piano.... His funeral was very low key. Did you hear about the cheese factory explosion in France? All that was left was de Brie. My wife left a note on the fridge saying: “This isn’t working. I’m leaving.” “What a lie! I opened the fridge door and it’s working fine.” I used to be in a band called “The Hinges” We opened for “The Doors.” I just found out that “Aaarghh” is not a real word. I can’t express how angry I am.

Car parks and bowls reopen in Sheffield parks Following the Government’s most recent update, Sheffield City Council has reviewed facilities across the city’s parks and is reopening car parks with immediate effect, and allowing the use of bowling greens. The updated guidance states that people can spend more time in parks and meet, with social distance, with one person from another household. The guidance also states that it is ok to use outdoor sports courts or facilities, with members of your household, or one other person while staying two metres apart. Sheffield’s parks grounds have remained open throughout lockdown to allow daily exercise, but all other facilities were closed. Since the restrictions changed Sheffield City Council has been reviewing facilities within parks to assess what can be safely reopened. Tennis courts were reopened on 21 May, and now car parks and bowls will also be in use again. Toilets, cafes, club houses, playgrounds and other multi-use games areas remain closed. The council is working with cafe owners and lease holders, as well as ice cream van operators, to support them towards safely reopening in early June. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “We kept all our parks grounds open to allow people the many benefits of daily exercise in outdoor green

spaces, on their doorsteps, but closed all other facilities to keep people safe. “Since the Government updated restrictions around time spent in parks and relaxing rules on essential travel, we have been reviewing all our parks’ facilities to enable reopening of those where we feel safe social distancing can still happen. “After opening our tennis courts yesterday, we are now also able to reopen all our car parks and bowling greens. “However, while we want people to enjoy their time outside and have a little freedom, fun and fitness, I must also stress that the risks are still high. Everyone must take responsibility and follow the social distancing rules that are in place to protect us all. “We hope to be able to reopen other facilities where and when it is safe to do so, but this can only happen if everyone upholds their part in keeping to safe distances and practicing good hygiene. “If you are going to be out and about please consider avoiding some of our typically busier parks, go explore somewhere new and have a healthy and happy bank holiday weekend.” All car parks in Sheffield’s parks, green spaces and woodlands are now open for use. All car parks are free of charge at this time. People will be notified in advance when parking charges come back in to effect. Bowling greens across Sheffield’s parks will now be available for use, subject to strict safety measures. Signs have been placed at each location with guidelines that must be followed at all Sheffield Parks bowling greens, to allow users to bowl safely and adhere to the Government’s social distancing guidelines.

shared by the tradesperson before they arrive and clarifying any questions or concerns with them in advance • Paying by bank transfer and not using cash Malcolm Farrow of OFTEC, commented: “As the government slowly starts to ease some of the lockdown measures, more tradespeople will be working in peoples’ homes across South Yorkshire. As long as the new guidelines are carefully observed, consumers should feel safe having heating technicians, plumbers and other professionals in their home. We can all help make things easier by accommodating the new rules tradespeople are following and raise any issues or concerns before the work begins. Households must remember to continue to follow the two metre social distancing rules and it’s vital that no work is undertaken if either the tradesperson or someone living in the house is showing any COVID-19 symptoms. For the households in South Yorkshire who need to have work completed on their heating system, always ensure you use a GasSafe, for mains gas, or OFTEC, for oil heating and solid fuel, registered technician as they are fully qualified and all follow strict safety guidelines.” The guidelines for use are: • When entering and using the green you must remain 2m apart from anyone who is not from your household at all times • No buildings, toilets or welfare facilities will be available and they must remain locked • You can only bowl by yourself; or with up to four members from your household; or with one person from outside your household (continue to follow Government advice) • You must use your own bowls, jack and bowls mat • A maximum of one jack will be allowed on the green • Whilst walking on the green during your game, ensure social distancing is adhered to at all times • Good hygiene should be practiced. You should clean your hands before and after playing. No washing facilities will be available, users must supply their own hand gels and dispose appropriately • If Sheffield City Council staff or contractors are working on the greens or surrounding areas no play must be undertaken until advised. Prior to playing, all members should book via their bowling club. Anyone who has any symptoms of the coronavirus illness (Covid-19), however mild, should stay at home. Anyone listed by the Government as being in the at risk group, should stay at home. For all the latest information sign up to the council’s COVID-19 email updates. ANGLING TRUST SUBMITS NEW PLANS TO GET MATCH FISHING PERMITTED UNDER COVID-19 RULES The Angling Trust has been working with leading anglers and fisheries in the match fishing community to gain agreement for competitions to resume in compliance with the Government’s guidance on organised gatherings and sporting events. Riverfest organiser Dave Harrell, England internationals Steve Ringer and Dean Barlow and Lindholme fishery boss Aaron Grantham are amongst a group of highly experienced match fishing enthusiasts who have been working with the Angling Trust to deliver robust new guidelines to bring competition fishing in line with COVID19 procedures which, it is hoped, will secure the necessary agreement from Government to allow match fishing to resume as soon as possible The current Government guidance states: The limit on gatherings - no more than two, unless members of the same household - means that it is unlikely to be possible to organise amateur events or competitions at this time. The Government is clear that sports participation should be restricted to participants exercising by themselves, or with members from their same household, or a minimum of two metres apart from one member of another household, observing social distancing guidelines. Venues are advised to display signs to this effect. The

police have been given powers to enforce these measures. Some fisheries have argued that because angling competitions can be arranged without any form of gathering of more than two persons and that individual competitors will always be at 2 metres distance, it is possible to comply with the Government’s coronavirus guidance. The Angling Trust are seeking formal clarification from the Police and Government and have submitted the new best practice guide for match fishing in support of their case. Aaron Grantham of Lindholme Lakes said: “I am working with the Angling Trust to ensure that we can bring back competitions in a safe and compliant way. I can assure you that we are doing all we can to achieve this goal for match anglers and I have been impressed by how owners, fisheries, organisers, clubs and individuals have come together with the Trust to find a route forward that adheres with Government guidance.” Damian Bracken commented: “Having contacted the Angling Trust to question the position on competitions I was invited to help develop the argument as to how and why matches could restart under the COVID-19 restrictions. Whilst I have been able to use some of my workplace experience I am first and foremost a match angler and can honestly say that every effort is being made to get competitions back. It is great to see top names in the sport working with fisheries and match organisers to plot a way forward.” Consultation with insurance brokers has suggested that due to the Government’s guidance on organised gatherings and sporting events it is likely that insurers would not cover fisheries or organisers who were found to be running competitions at this time. Therefore it is crucial that agreement is received from the appropriate authorities to provide a safe and compliant route towards the resumption of competitions. Dave Harrell has been working to draft guidance applicable to all disciples of angling. He said: “As main co-ordinator for the RiverFest competition,

I therefore spoke at length with the organisers of many of the qualifying matches in different parts of the country to get their thoughts and opinions. I was very impressed with the level of professionalism and attention to detail and I believe that the guidelines the Angling Trust has now put together are the way forward. While coronavirus is still a danger, by following a simple step-by-step procedure, match anglers can once again look forward to doing what they enjoy most and doing it safely. The Angling Trust best practice document has been presented to Sport England and the Government.

Wilder hoping to mirror Bundesliga return Chris Wilder says there is an enormous amount of enthusiasm up and down the country to ensure a safe return of Premier League football in the coming weeks. And the Blades boss hopes football in England’s top-flight can mirror the return

Blowing off the cobwebs Moses Odubajo has reflected on a tough but rewarding return to Middlewood Road. The Wednesday squad returned to phased training on Monday, involving small groups and adhering rigidly to government and EFL guidelines. Talking us through his experiences of phase one so far, Odubajo said: “It was tough, especially in the sun! “I thought it would be tough but maybe not

to action of that in Germany, which resumed on Saturday 16th May behind closed doors. The Blades boss began: “There are an awful lot of opinions flying about but thankfully there is a light at the end of the tunnel that we can all get back to normality in terms of our working. “We watch quite a lot of the Bundesliga, it’s an interesting division with some great players, great teams and great tactics. “There’s an enormous amount of enthusiasm in this

country to watch football and I think that’s a great gauge of what the Premier League will be like when we get back.” Wilder continued: “The authorities are obviously trying to get through phase one as quickly as possible, they talked about it as a minimum of 7 days and if it goes to plan, they will assess it. “It’s an ongoing scenario from day-today, it has the ability to pause and change with certain situations that may happen. They want to roll out things out quickly and

as safely as possible and keep everyone on board. “Small groups of training now, testing on a Tuesday and Friday, and I’m sure that will be key as well to come through those periods and make a decision on that quickly. “Step two is contact and making the groups bigger and that has to come as quickly as possible to accelerate the small sided games, elevenvs-elevens and then the return to playing.”

as much as hard as it was on Monday but it gives us a good base and an idea where we are all at fitness-wise. “Hopefully within the next couple of weeks, if things are lifted further, then we could have kind of due back dates in terms of when the league will finish – that will help us mentally to know the date everyone is working towards. “But the lads have kept fit, you could see that and all that work is in the bank at the end of the day. “We started with a few tests to see where we were at with fitness, there was ball work - a kind of slow leg

burner - and then after another running drill, back to ball work, back to a running session and finish with ball work. “So there was a good mix on the first day to blow the cobwebs away. “There are groups of four, everyone allocated different times and my group was with Alessio Da Cruz, Jordan Rhodes and Liam Palmer – and as we leave, others were arriving so it’s nice to obviously see the boys again having not seen them for a while in person. “On the pitches to the right, you could see other groups working

which was nice so in the next few weeks it will be good to see things lifted slowly and as a team come back together.” The two-month stoppage of football has also afforded time for Odubajo to reflect as he explained: “I’ve had time to reflect so this period has given me time to review and reflect on things I can do better and will do better. “I also started building a gym in the garage and that has kept me busy too and since then, I’ve been able to do a lot more in terms of weights, like I would ordinarily do at the training ground.”

Anderson believes this season has been one of personal progression
