Keep Sheffield’s parks clean and tidy Following the long run of hot weather and the ease in lockdown restrictions, Sheffield’s parks have seen a huge increase in visitor numbers, and unfortunately with it, a huge increase in litter. With new restrictions allowing groups of up to six, from different households, to meet outdoors, and after temperatures soared last weekend thousands of local people flocked to enjoy time in Sheffield’s many beautiful green open spaces. Although most residents take pride in the city’s parks and respect the natural environment, many also
abused Sheffield’s green havens, leaving bags of rubbish, litter, bottles & cans, food waste and even scorching grass from the use of barbeques. During the last couple of weeks teams from Sheffield City Council’s parks & countryside service and it’s Streets Ahead contractor, Amey, have been working hard to keep Sheffield’s green spaces clean and safe for everyone to use. Volunteers and members of the public have also been doing their bit to restore parks to their natural beauty. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks
and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “Our many parks are one of Sheffield’s unique and great features, and during lockdown have provided our residents with a place to relax, take exercise, clear their minds and breathe in the fresh air. I know it’s been a blessing for many that restrictions have eased and groups are being allowed to meet outdoors and we want people to enjoy our natural surroundings. But it cannot come at the cost of our green spaces being ruined. “We want local people to make the most of our parks but we must insist that everyone shows respect and
cleans up after themselves. The scenes I saw after the weekend were unacceptable. It’s simple, if you can carry stuff to the park, you can take it away. I ask, please, for everyone’s sake don’t spoil our parks, let’s make sure we can all enjoy them.” After images were shared on social media many local people responded with anger and disappointment to the lack of care and pride shown by some in their own parks. Cllr Lea added: “The images speak for themselves, it’s shameful. But, while the mess left behind is upsetting, I want to remind people that this is a minority and I
know that most Sheffielders are very proud and do act responsibly. Our parks are visited by thousands of people and I want to thank all those who do treat our green spaces with the care and respect they deserve. “If you see any issues please report them so that we can deal with them as quickly as possible.” Overflowing bins in parks and green spaces can be reported to parksandcountryside@ sheffield.gov.uk People found dropping litter or dumping waste may be fined at least £80 or prosecuted

CRYSTAL Peaks shopping centre has drawn up detailed plans for how it will it will welcome back shoppers following the easing of Government restrictions. The award-winning Sheffield shopping mall has remained partially open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with approximately 18 essential stores and services continuing to trade. But with the government decision to allow all non-essential shops to start re-open from June 15, the centre has unveiled details of how it will welcome customers back to its stores. The plans focus on providing customers with the confidence to return to the centre and include a range of measures aimed at ensuring their visit works for everyone, including staff and other members of the community. Measures include a Keep Left system throughout the centre to maintain customer flow and enable customers to social distance with ease - retailers are also being encouraged to adapt a similar Keep Left strategy in their stores. Where appropriate the malls have been physically split down the middle with crossing points at strategic locations. Entry to the centre will be monitored to ensure capacities are within social distancing limits with both signage and audible messaging on the Public Address system supporting the changes. If needed a section of the Crystal Peaks Bus Station will also be used for external queuing for the site’s busiest West Mall Entrance. Tram and bus passengers will be encouraged to use the entrance closest to their destination shops to reduce the amount of queuing required. Supermarket trollies will no longer be allowed to move between levels, freeing up space for customer movement and relieving pressure on lifts. Sainsbury’s customers are being asked to park in the Green car park. Washroom facilities will be available - including male and female toilets, disabled toilets and baby change rooms - on the lower mall adjacent to the escalators. Some food and drink retailers will be open but for takeaway and delivery services only. Not all stores will necessarily be open immediately, or may have reduced hours so visitors are asked to check with stores or the centre website before they make a special trip. Hand sanitising stations will be available throughout the centre For information on stores which are open visit crystalpeakscentre.com

BE A SUCCESSFUL QUITTER IN 2020 Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping
smoking Sarah has saved over £180 in a very short space of time and plans to treat herself with a new wardrobe full of clothes. Sarah would tell anyone thinking about stopping smoking to never touch them as they control you, you don’t control them. Yorkshire Smoke Free would like to advise that during this current time of uncertainty due to the Covid 19 virus, we are still offering smoking cessation support. Appointments continue to take place by way of telephone support. Please do not hesitate to contact the service on 0114 321649.

SKATEPARKS, BASKETBALL COURTS AND MULTI-USE GAMES AREAS TO REOPEN More facilities in Sheffield’s parks have opened this week, with skateparks, basketball courts and multi-use games areas now available across the city. Since the Government announced changes to Coronavirus restrictions, allowing outdoor sports facilities to reopen and allowing groups of up to six people from different households to meet outdoors, Sheffield’s parks and countryside service have been working to reopen some facilities where safe to do so. Tennis courts and bowling greens were reopened for use in May, and now the city’s basketball courts, skateparks and multi-use games areas will also be reopened. Sheffield City Council has completed risk assessments and implemented measures that will allow people to safely use these facilities and to adhere to social distancing guidelines.
Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “These facilities are predominantly used by our younger residents, so I’m really pleased that we’re able to reopen them and allow our young people to get back out there and enjoy the sports and activities they love. “We’ve put measures and rules in place that will allow people to use these sports areas while still being able to social distance, and I have to stress that everyone must stick to them. No more than six people in a group and those from different households must remain two metres apart. “I really want everyone to be able to enjoy some of their hobbies again and to stay physically active, but I also want everyone to keep well and healthy. “These areas don’t operate booking systems so we have to rely on everyone being considerate and sharing the facilities fairly and safely. “Signs will be in place at all sites advising of the new measures and rules of use.” These include but are not limited to: • When entering and using facilities, remain 2m apart from anyone from a different household at all times.
• No buildings, toilets or welfare facilities will be available and they will remain locked. • If meeting with groups of up to six people from different households, follow social distancing guidelines (Continue to follow Government advice) • Participants must use their own equipment. • Practise good hygiene by cleaning hands before and after play. • No washing facilities will be available, users must supply their own hand gels and dispose appropriately. • If Sheffield City Council staff or contractors are working in the court or surrounding areas, no play must be undertaken until advised. Anyone with symptoms of the coronavirus illness (COVID19), however mild, and those who are listed by the Government as being in the ‘at risk’ groups should stay at home. If you do experience symptoms, you should book a test online, and if you test positive, you must inform the NHS Test and Trace service. Sheffield City Council will be monitoring the use of reopened facilities to makes sure guidelines are being followed. Playgrounds, outdoor gym equipment, parkour structures and toilets remain closed in Sheffield’s parks.

Council reminds drivers to respect parking restrictions Sheffield City Council is reminding drivers to respect parking restrictions as new phase of lockdown sees more cars returning to the roads. The Covid-19 lockdown has seen a high reduction in traffic on Sheffield’s roads, but with people now able to travel more freely for exercise and outdoor gatherings, Civil Enforcement Officers are stepping up action against dangerous and obstructive parking across the city. The Council is encouraging people to travel by foot or
bike wherever possible and is introducing active travel measures such as footpath widening and pop-up cycle lanes in many communities to support social distancing and exercise. Free key worker parking in off-street Council car parks, which has been provided since March, will come to an end on 15th June, as the city centre reopens and nonessential businesses begin to trade again. However a free parking pass scheme provided by the Council, put in place to support NHS staff and volunteers, and those working in the care sector will remain Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re now coming up to the next phase of lockdown and preparing to reopen our city centre for the first time in months. As the Government guidance is for people to avoid public transport where possible, we know there will
be significantly more traffic on roads as people travel in their cars and on bikes. “The data shows that we’re now back up to 68% of normal traffic levels and we believe this will rise even further from the 15th June. “As a Council, we’re working hard to introduce new measures to make it easier for people to walk and cycle to their destinations, but we know that this is not always possible and so expect roads to become much busier by the end of the month. We need to make sure that there are enough parking spaces for everyone who needs one, which is why we’ve taken this decision. But please be assured that we are still providing free parking for NHS and care workers who need to park in the city centre. “I’d therefore like to remind everyone to please be considerate and make sure you park safely and appropriately as you travel.”

USEFUL NUMBERS
News, Information and Advice consumer rights in lockdown
As the lockdown eases across the UK, consumers have many questions around travel, holiday, online shopping and spectator activities that have been put on hold or postponed until the lockdown is fully lifted. Whilst we try and navigate the ‘new normal’ there are a number of consumer issues which are causing concern. Below we offer some general guidance around online consumers’ rights on everything from shopping to holidays… Shopping I bought some clothes in-store which I need to return. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to do this due to the crisis and now the returns period is finished. What are my rights? Retailers are generally offering that goods purchased after a certain date can be returned within a specified period once their stores reopen. The time frames surrounding the purchase and the period of return differ between retailers. You may wish to check with the retailer’s policy for returns during the crisis. I have gift vouchers which are shortly due to expire so I won’t be able to spend them due to the lockdown. What are my rights in terms of asking for an extension? In essence, the contract between the purchaser and the voucher provider has now become frustrated as the parties can no longer carry out that contract. Most retailers are offering extensions to the expiry of their gift vouchers to a later date and some are removing the expiry dates. The nature of the extensions varies between retailers so you would be advised to check with the voucher provider. Alternatively, you may be entitled to a refund given that the contract is now frustrated but this will likely be governed by the terms and conditions in relation to that voucher. Tickets I bought tickets to a concert/event which has now been cancelled. However, they are hosting an online ‘virtual’ version instead. What are my cancellations and refund rights? As the concert cannot be performed in the format set out in the initial contract then it would give rise to a claim for the full refund from the ticket provider. However, if the artist/performer is hosting a virtual version then they may be willing to offer a different package and partial refund. The artist will still be performing their service so arguably the artist should receive payment in some form for putting on the virtual performance. Holidays I don’t want to go on my holiday anymore due to the Covid-19 crisis and risk of
infection, can I simply cancel it and get a full refund? The holiday company should allow for rebookings or full refunds during the Covid19 crisis in circumstances where they are not able to fulfil the contract. However, if the holiday is not affected by Covid-19 then the holiday company may argue that they will not be willing to cancel as your ability to go on holiday is unaffected. If this is the case that you may wish to raise a complaint with the company and if the result is unsatisfactory then you may wish to raise the issue with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). If your cancellation is due to a pre-existing health concern, and subsequent medical advice not to travel due to Covid-19, then you may want to check with your travel insurer to see if any cover is in place for such circumstances. Fitness My gym has closed due to the lockdown but they are insisting that the rules around cancelling my membership remain unchanged as they are providing a number of virtual classes. What are my rights, particularly when I don’t have equipment at home for things such as cycling ‘Spin’ classes? Given that your gym is unable to provide the services set out in the contract you could argue that the contract is frustrated and that you should not be charged for this period. Many gyms are offering this until such time as the gym can reopen. Whether offering online services would be sufficient for them to continue to charge you a fee, would depend on the specifics of the services provided and we would suggest you seek legal advice on your individual case. TV I have a subscription to a sports channel that isn’t showing any live sport (they are merely showing repeats). What are my rights in terms of a cancellation? Sports TV services are allowing for subscriptions and their payments to be paused during the period that there are no events taking place due to Covid-19. The service provider should contact you to let you know when the subscription will restart again. Some providers are offering refunds paid for the sports subscription during the Covid-19 affected months and are offering a free month of their service. Education/Students I am a student and no longer need my university accommodation. Can I cancel and get a refund on my deposit and any rent I’ve paid in advance? Most universities and large accommodation providers are offering to waive the rent costs for the summer term months, or release students from their contracts early if they have returned home. In private accommodation there is no automatic relief provided to students and you would need to negotiate directly with your landlord as you may remain liable for rent depending on the individual terms of your tenancy. My university has told me that I need to
pay all of my tuition fees, even though I haven’t been at university this term / won’t be attending in September. What are my rights? The guidance from the government’s Universities Minister suggests that there will not be any refunding of tuition fees where adequate online teaching and learning facilities have been provided. If you feel that these standards are not being met then you can make a complaint to the university. If the university cannot deal with it, or the result is unsatisfactory, then you may report this issue further to the OIA (Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education).
carers’ week 8th-14th june
The word ‘carer’ has been on all of our lips recently. Those who work tirelessly in our NHS, in care homes, as paid carers for people in their own homes – and we have thanked and praised them for the work that they do for us. From the 8 to 14 June, it’s Carers Week and time to thank those unpaid carers who, young and old, care in the home for someone in their family. Around 6.5 million people in the UK are carers, looking after a parent, partner, child or friend. A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health problem, substance misuse issues or who needs extra help as they grow older. Carers Week is held every year to raise awareness of caring and to help highlight the challenges carers face and to recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. Thousands of individuals and organisations organise activities and events during the week, drawing attention to just how important caring is. www.doyoucare.co.uk gives advice about how people can get involved in supporting and celebrating the work of unpaid carers. In Sheffield, there are around 65,000 carers at any one time in the city, and most of them are hidden in that they don’t recognise themselves as a carer. This means that very often they don’t think to ask for help and support. Two charities that are part-funded by the council to offer this much needed support are Sheffield Carers Centre which does everything that it can to help adult carers and Sheffield Young Carers which supports carers who are aged 8-25. As well as the many adult carers in Sheffield there are many young unpaid carers too. Kristian, who is 14, said: “I started caring at around the age of 8. I care for my dad. I care for him because he occasionally has fits, pain spasms and he has fibromyalgia, so he is sometimes unable to move. As a carer I have to tidy the house and if heavy objects need moving I’m normally the one doing it. Also I have to do runs to the shop when my dad

Call us on 0114 243 3933 can’t order things to the house. Lockdown has been hard – it’s put more stress on me as a young carer because now I always have to be at home and here to do things when I’m needed.” George Lindars-Hammond, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Sheffield City Council said: “Carers Week reminds us that carers contribute a massive amount to Sheffield, and without them the city would grind to a halt. If carers weren’t doing what they do, it would cost the equivalent of the NHS budget to replace them. That’s how important their role is, and we thank them for everything that they do. We know that caring can impact on carers’ health so we’re offering as much support to them as possible so that they can keep healthy and well.”

MATCH FISHING GETS GREEN LIGHT FROM GOVERNMENT THANKS TO NEW BEST PRACTICE GUIDELINES Robust new best practice guidelines published by the Angling Trust to bring match fishing in line with COVID-19 procedures have now been agreed by the government as a basis for competitions to resume immediately. These include no gathering of competitors for the draw or prize giving and special equipment and arrangements to maintain social distancing during the weigh-in. The Angling Trust guidelines were produced in consultation with leading anglers, organisers and fisheries in the match fishing community across all angling disciplines. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) made clear in their announcement and supporting literature on 13th May 2020 that it was unlikely that competitions could be undertaken across any sporting discipline. However, the Angling Trust compiled a case for the best practice guidelines to form the basis on which match fishing can comply with both the overarching government guidance that accompanies the Coronavirus regulations and the specific prohibitions on public gatherings of more than two people from different households. Failure to follow these guidelines would almost certainly invalidate the insurance of clubs or fisheries and will certainly expose anglers, and therefore the wider public, to a great risk of infection. In last week’s submission to the DCMS, Angling Trust CEO Jamie Cook set out the reasons why competition
fishing was different to other sports in ways which make it potentially compliant with the correct safeguards in place. • Fishing competitions involve no contact between competitors and is more or less the comparison of catch returns at the end of the day • Social distancing is maintained at all times during an angling competition • There are no spectators • No competitor is allowed to make contact with another competitor or their equipment The Angling Trust best practice document was presented to Sport England and the DCMS last week who agreed that they were ‘sensible’ and could be issued this week as the basis for a safe resumption of match fishing in England. In response, DCMS also stated that they were looking for sports to satisfy themselves that all guidance they are producing for their members adheres to the overarching guidance published by the government. Following the easing of some of the lockdown restrictions on May 13th, general guidance to anglers in the Angling Trust’s When We Fish Again report will be revised. The changes will include: • A resumption in match fishing in line with best practice guidance • The use of keep nets will be permitted for all anglers • Kayak and boat fishing in freshwater Separate guidelines have been produced for game, coarse and sea angling competitions but Charter boat fishing is still not compliant under the current regulations.

Blades TV Schedule Confirmed
United’s first four league games, three of which are away from home, will all be televised live on Sky Sports when the Premier League restarts later this month. The away fixture against Aston Villa, originally postponed because of the hosts’ involvement in the Carabao Cup final, will kick the action off on Wednesday 17th June, kick-off 6pm. As the one of the two clubs to be involved in the first premier League played game behind closed doors, this is another milestone in the Blades’ remarkable history of “firsts” in football - including such notable milestones as staging the first floodlit game, and of course Brian
Deane’s famous first-ever goal in the Premier League! On Sunday 21st June, Chris Wilder will take his side to tackle Newcastle United and the match against Steve Bruce’s Magpies will kick-off 2pm. This game will also be shown ‘free-to-air’ on Sky’s Pick channel. Three days later, on Wednesday 24th June, the Blades clash against Manchester United has also been chosen for Sky. The fixture against the Red Devils will kick-off at 6pm. Also, this game will be shown ‘free-toair’ on Pick. Meanwhile, it can now also be confirmed that United’s first home Premier League clash after the restart, against Tottenham Hotspur, will be shown live by Sky. The game against Jose Mourinho’s side, which was due to be screened live in April, will now be televised on Thursday 2nd July,
kick-off 6pm. Meanwhile United’s Emirates FA Cup quarter-final clash against Arsenal will be broadcast live on BT Sport later this month. The last eight tie will take place at Bramall Lane on Sunday 28th June, kick-off 1pm. The Blades overcame Reading after extratime at the Madejski Stadium in March to reach the sixth round stage, whilst Mikael Arteta’s Gunners beat Portsmouth at Fratton Park in the fifth round. The Semi Finals will provisionally take place over the weekend of 18th19th July, with the Final provisionally scheduled for Saturday 1st August.
EFL live on TV for Owls Fans Season Ticket holders at all Sky Bet EFL Championship Clubs will be given unprecedented access to watch the conclusion of the 2019/20 season online. The Championship season will resume behind closed doors on June 20 live on Sky Sports, and work has been undertaken to ensure Season Ticket holding supporters are given the opportunity not to miss any of the action, whether the games take place home or away. Sky Sports will broadcast 30 of the remaining 108 Championship matches alongside exclusively showing the 15 games across all EFL divisions in the Sky Bet Play-Off s. The 30 live League fixtures will also be

streamed on a Club’s iFollow (or equivalent) service, where access will be provided for Season Ticket holders. Supporters should note the following: Access to the games will be determined by the Club where the supporter holds a Season Ticket Access may be in lieu of a refund or part of a wider package as determined by each individual Club In addition, the remaining 78 matches will be streamed exclusively live, again with access available to Season Ticket holders as identified above. Non-season Ticket holding supporters will able to purchase these games for the current match price pass of £10. Sky Sports will show the “goals as they go in” from these matches. The 30 live Sky matches will also be available to the EFL’s overseas broadcasters via the League’s partnership with Pitch International. The other games will be available for supporters of EFL Clubs outside of the UK, either as part of already purchased season passes (for their respective
Club) or to buy on an individual matchby-match basis The decision to structure this arrangement in such a unique way has become possible as a result of a settlement deal agreed between the EFL and Sky following the postponement of the competition earlier this year, and is one that has limited financial impact on the existing arrangement with the broadcaster at a time when EFL Clubs have lost a significant income stream through a lack of gate receipts. The fixture schedule is in the process of being finalised, alongside the revised broadcast selections, with EFL games set to take place at the following times (or as otherwise agreed): Weekends Friday – 6pm and 8pm Saturday – 12.30pm, 3pm and 5.30pm Sunday – 12pm Midweek Tuesday – 5pm, 6pm and 8pm Wednesday – 5pm, 6pm and 8pm EFL Chair Rick Parry said: “I would firstly like to thank the team at Sky Sports for their patience and support whilst we

have worked through some of the complex issues surrounding our agreement that have arisen as a result of live sport being unable to take place due to the current crisis. There is no question that COVID19 has detrimentally affected all industries and, whilst we have only ever wanted to return when it is safe to do, we have always understood that when we did, we had to balance the requirements of our broadcast partners with the unique and challenging financial circumstances that our Clubs face. We are delighted to have reached such an agreeable and sensible arrangement that ensures the financial impact to Clubs is minimised, Sky Sports are able to get their football business back up with one of the most eagerly anticipated Championship run-ins in years and, importantly, fans get access to games during a period where guidelines prevent them from attending in person.” Meanwhile Sheffield Wednesday have released a statement to inform supporters that they are finalising details on a number of pro rata rebate options for fixtures missed in the 2019/20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The EFL have this afternoon confirmed the ability for Season Ticket holders to potentially access
remaining home and away games via the iFollow streaming service, which can now be incorporated as a further rebate option. Additional details related to live streaming access will be issued to clubs next week, after which the club say they will be in a position to communicate the full range of alternatives for supporters. Other options will include a pro rata refund, equivalent value in ticket credit, merchandise points or donation opportunities. Midfielder Joey Pelupessy has committed his immediate future to Sheffield Wednesday. The 27-year-old has extended his stay at the club for the 2020/21 season. Pelupessy arrived in S6 from Dutch side Heracles Almelo – where he was club captain - in January 2018. Previously, Pelupessy began his career in the Eredivisie with FC Twente, where he made a handful of appearances after representing the club at youth level. His big senior break came during the 2013/14 campaign in a brief spell with Dutch second tier side Jong FC Twente which preceded a summer switch to Heracles. A consummate professional, Pelupessy signed for the Owls for an undisclosed fee following four successful seasons
