Sheffield host to 5 teams in Rugby League World Cup With under 500 days to go until the opening fixture of the Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021), tournament organisers have announced that Sheffield will act as a host for the current holders of the wheelchair trophy, France, as well as Wales, Scotland and USA wheelchair sides. The Steel City will also welcome Greece’s men’s team, who take part in their first ever Rugby League World Cup. Sheffield is set to play a

major role in RLWC2021, with Bramall Lane hosting an England men’s group game, and the EIS Sheffield hosting a group game as well as both semi-final ties in the wheelchair tournament, on top of today’s exciting announcement that the city will be welcoming five nation teams. Sheffield will play host to the Greek men’s team, who are taking part in the nation’s first ever Rugby League World Cup after overcoming a backdrop of turmoil. With

the Greek’s currently unable to play rugby league in their own country, they’ll be looking to make the Steel City a real home-from-home. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield could not be more thrilled to be a host city for the Rugby League World Cup 2021, and to welcome the Greek Men’s team plus the reigning wheelchair champions, France, USA and our neighbouring countries Wales

and Scotland to train here. As we begin to reopen outdoor sports facilities in our city, we understand the value of sport in our communities, more than ever. “Whilst we look forward to the competition commencing in 500 days, and to welcoming athletes and spectators from across the UK and around the world, we must do so carefully and with utmost consideration to the safety and wellbeing of players and fans alike. The pandemic has left sports in a

very different place to what it was a year ago and we have to respect that challenges will need to be overcome to make this event one to remember for all the right reasons. “Sheffield is proud to be an inclusive city with a rich sporting history which perfectly represents the values of this tournament. This exciting event will no doubt leave a long-lasting legacy celebrating the heritage of Rugby League and inspiring our fans and players of the future.” Please visit www.RLWC2021. com for more information and for details on how to sign up to the receive ticket alerts and all the latest news first.

BE A SUCCESSFUL QUITTER IN 2020 Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping

smoking Sarah has saved over £180 in a very short space of time and plans to treat herself with a new wardrobe full of clothes. Sarah would tell anyone thinking about stopping smoking to never touch them as they control you, you don’t control them. Yorkshire Smoke Free would like to advise that during this current time of uncertainty due to the Covid 19 virus, we are still offering smoking cessation support. Appointments continue to take place by way of telephone support. Please do not hesitate to contact the service on 0114 321649.

CLIFFHANGER FESTIVAL 2020 CANCELLED Sheffield’s inner-city festival of the outdoors, Cliffhanger, and its headline event the BMC La Sportiva British Bouldering Championships will not take place in 2020. Since its move to the city centre in 2016, Sheffield’s Cliffhanger has become one of the most anticipated and well attended events of the year, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Sheffield City Council and festival partners have cancelled the event. Celebrating outdoors adventure and boasting all the qualities and features that The Outdoor City offers, the festival is home to the annual national bouldering championships, that sees the very best of British climbers compete for the crown on Devonshire Green. The event was due to take place next month, across the weekend of 11-12 July. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “It is with regret that we must cancel Cliffhanger 2020. Throughout the coronavirus pandemic we have prioritised keeping people safe and limiting the spread of the virus, and although some restrictions are being relaxed, it would be irresponsible to continue with plans for the event.

“In recent years Cliffhanger has grown in to an inclusive celebration, highlighting Sheffield’s unique offer of outdoor adventure and vibrant city life. The bouldering championship is always the main attraction and it will be a big disappointment not to see that huge climbing wall towering over Devonshire Green. But, as with our many other events we’ll be working hard with our partners to bring back a safe and exciting events programme in 2021.” The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) has also confirmed that the La Sportiva British Bouldering Championships is not going ahead and fans will have to wait until 2021 to witness the strength and skills usually on display in Sheffield. Nick Colton, BMC Deputy CEO, said: “The British Bouldering Championships is a fantastically popular competition held

within Cliffhanger that attracts large numbers of spectators in a wonderful carnival atmosphere. Mindful of the safety of everyone at the event and those they go home to – as well as the vital importance of social distancing in the current crisis – it is regrettable, but right, that the event is cancelled.” The La Sportiva British Bouldering Championships will return next in summer of 2021. Since Coronavirus restrictions began nationally, all events have been cancelled or postponed in line with Government guidance. All council run events have been cancelled up to at least the end of July. Sheffield City Council continues to monitor the most recent guidelines and is keeping all future events under review.

What do you call an apology written in dots and dashes? Re-morse code. A spanish magician tells the audience he will disappear on the count of 3. He says, “Uno, dos...” and then poof... he disappeared without a tres. I just bought a new blindfold. I can’t see myself wearing it. My wife said that quilts are better than duvets.. I told her to be careful making blanket statements like that. I decided to quit my job as a personal trainer because I’m not big enough or strong enough. I’ve handed in my Too Weak notice. My 4-year-old nephew has been learning Spanish since lockdown. He can’t say “please”, which I think is poor for four. My wife claims she can wax my chest hair without me feeling any pain at all. I’m worried she won’t be able to pull it off.

SHEFFIELD DOC/FEST LAUNCHES 2020 PROGRAMME Sheffield Doc/Fest has revealed its line-up for 2020, featuring 115 films of all lengths, spanning 50 countries around the world and representing 49 spoken languages, with 22 UK productions included. The official selection for 2020 includes 31 World Premieres, 15 International Premieres, 5 European Premieres and 40 UK Premieres. The support of filmmakers and artists around the world, as well as core grant funding from British Film Institute, Sheffield City Council, Arts Council England and Wellcome Trust has enabled Doc/Fest to go ahead in a digital format from June throughout the summer, with live Autumn events planned October - November 2020. Festival Director Cíntia Gil said: “This year’s programme offers infinite ways to tell stories on film, bringing together various cinematic forms, plurality of voices and ways of expression, and from 50 countries around the world - to Sheffield, and online. The city region of Sheffield would normally have been welcoming thousands of visitors to our annual 6- day documentary festival this month. To not go ahead in some form this year was not an option, we have a commitment to the filmmakers and artists making work in this challenging time, to audiences who want a window to the world outside, and to the City of Sheffield, which supports us with great enthusiasm. We have been overwhelmed by the solidarity and trust shown by those who have contributed to our programme, and are hugely grateful for the financial support of the many funders, sponsors and partners who have made this year’s reconfigured edition possible. Together we hope to give back by supporting a city, industry and a community that

has been deeply affected by this crisis” Renowned filmmakers include: Abbas Fahdel, Alison Ellwood, Anthony Baxter, Carol Salter, Edgardo Cozarinsky, Jia Zhang-ke, Kim A. Snyder, Lech Kowalski, Lynne Ramsay, Lynne Sachs, Marc Isaacs, Mike Hoolboom, Phil Collins, Sarah Maldoror, Yael Bartana and Sheffield Hallam University graduate Oreet Ashery. New talent and 22 firsttime feature filmmakers make up 20% of the programme. This year Doc/Fest for the first time will extend its activities throughout the rest of the year – both in Sheffield and virtually. From June – November Sheffield Doc/Fest will deliver: • An online programme on Sheffield Doc/Fest Selects from now until the 10th of July for UK audiences; • A screening programme in Sheffield cinemas/venues across 4 weekends from October - November (dates/ venues to be announced and subject to safe conditions); • An online programme in October - November in parallel with live film screenings, on Sheffield Doc/Fest Selects platform for UK audiences; • An online programme on Doc/Player, Doc/Fest’s video library, for international industry and filmmakers from now to 31st August. Doc/Fest welcomes speakers from all parts of the film industry and from across the globe to discuss the current state of the world and what the future may hold virtually. In addition, Doc/Fest has partnered with BFI Player, Doc Alliance Films, The Guardian, and MUBI who will all host curated programmes from within the official selection between July and November. "We can, and have adapted, and are committed to supporting filmmakers, artists and producers, many of whom have recently had their productions and careers interrupted, and to supporting cinemas that are facing extreme challenges. Doc/Fest values their role in our community and in our cultural, social and political lives. For this reason we encourage audiences to come together

when it is safe to collectively support and discuss cinema, whilst also giving the opportunity to engage with the festival for a longer than usual period and via multiple platforms.” adds Cíntia Gil. Film Programme: Into the World - Films by essential directors with essential themes that take varied approaches to exploring our past, present and collective future. Rebellions - Films that try to decipher the world while being an agent of change: either through the promise of revolution by both collective and individual beings, as an act of resistance and protection, or as a refusal to forget. Ghosts & Apparitions - More experimental films, playing with form and showcasing the dismantling of frontiers based on histories and collective memory. Rhyme & Rhythm - films where cinema and other art forms meet, whether through performance, theatre, visual art or music. Each film offers encounters and inspirations to a different beat. Retrospective: Reimagining the Land - films which reassert the primacy of the land as a critical way of thinking about the world and about its various crises - confronting historical images of land, agriculture, rural life and proletarian struggle. Alternate Realities Programme: Sheffield Doc/Fest’s Alternate Realities programme is a space for experimentation in digital art, bringing together varied forms and languages, playing with non-fiction boundaries and expanding them. Ghosts & Apparitions is 2020’s curated artist exhibition at Site Gallery, Sheffield, presented in parallel and in dialogue with the film strand of the same name as part of Doc/Fest’s Autumn programme in Sheffield. Exchange Programme: Doc/Fest Exchange lies at the heart of the festival spanning films, talks and digital art projects. The ambition this year

is to kickstart a rebellion in the making of new work. In partnership with Vídeo nas Aldeias, a programme of films will reflect the diversity of indigenous communities living in Brazilian territories. Whilst the environmental crisis threatens our everyday lives, the programme explores ways in which we can learn from their historical experience of resistance to threat - against their societies, their health and ways of life. This will culminate in a 3-day celebration of new work, conversations and workshops to share discoveries from Exchange commissions. Open and free to all, it is presented and run in parallel and in dialogue with the Rebellions film strand, as part of Doc/Fest’s Autumn programme in Sheffield. Q&As Q&As with the filmmakers in the programme, both live and pre-recorded, will take place on a new online platform Sheffield Doc/Fest Selects from July and as part of Doc/ Fest’s Autumn programme in Sheffield. For the general public, the online programme Sheffield Doc/Fest Selects - VOD platform with pay-per-view and subscription options for UK-based public audiences -it was launched on 10 June, including a free Exchange film programme and Q&As with filmmakers. Tickets and access-all-film subscriptions available at www.selects. sheffdocfest.com from 10 June. A number of films from the official selection will screen live in Sheffield once cinemas reopen in the Autumn and will be available online in parallel. Sheffield Doc/Fest is a film festival and marketplace, celebrating, sharing and debating documentary arts as a collective form of engagement. The festival champions and pushes forward talent, ideas and interaction for the future of film and the arts.

Chapeltown Market under new ownership despite COVID-19 This week sees the opening of all non essential shops, some aspects of life are getting back to some normality. Meanwhile in Chapeltown, the Market which has been in decline for many years, has been given a new lease of life. Five local residents decided that despite the current COVID19 challenges, they would take matters into their own hands and formed Chapelgreen Community Enterprise, a NOT for Profit organisation that has taken over the running of Chapeltown Market for the benefit of the community. Co-Founder Paul Swift says “I am so excited to be part of

this amazing venture. Real change happens when local people take the lead. National governments deal with National issues, but local change happens when local people grab the bull by the horns and do things!” Thanks to the help and support of the Chapeltown Working Men’s club and the Sheffield Social Enterprise Network, the new Market plans to launch in July under the new name of TRAXX. The Friday fruit and Veg market will carry on as normal, but plans are being worked on to have a full market on Saturdays and a Christmas weekend market is also in the development stage. If the current global pandemic has done anything, it’s brought a renewed sense of community and the benefits brought by using local shops and buying local. Anyone who is interested in having a stall at the new market, you can contact TRAXX by emailing yourmarket@ traxxsheffield.co.uk Lets see what the next couple of months bring with this exciting community venture.

SHEFFIELD RETAIL OPENS FOR BUSINESS As non-essential businesses reopen in the city centre and local district shopping centres, Sheffield City Council is working with retailers to ensure people can stay safe and socially distance as they travel to shop or go to work. Most measures have been put in place in the city centre and the Council has set out what to expect when visiting the city centre from this week. Timing your visit If you can, please visit the city centre at quieter times. These are 9am-11am and 3pm-5pm. Social distancing measures Digital boards, floor stickers and posters will be displayed to remind people to stay apart and adhere to social distancing guidelines as they move around the city centre. Key areas such as the Moor will have clearways marked out in yellow to separate areas for walking and queueing. We’re working with retailers to create one way queuing systems in shops ensuring that they meet Covid-19 guidelines. Help and guidance City centre ambassadors will be on hand to assist and help with any queries or issues. Look out for their distinctive red jackets around the city centre. Travelling to the city centre The Council are encouraging everyone who can, to travel into the city centre by walking, cycling or any other form of active travel. Please only use a car if you have to and use public transport as a last resort. Free key worker parking ended in Council car parks on the 15 June, so charges will once again apply for parking at these sites. Pedestrianised areas The Council are implementing a variety of measures across the city to ensure safe social distancing and encourage walking and cycling. This includes the closure of Pinstone Street to all traffic except pedestrians and cyclists. Division Street will also be partly pedestrianised from Westfield Terrace to Rockingham Street (between the Frog and Parrot and the Great Gatsby.) You can find more information on the road closures. Sections of footpath on Division Street will also be widened to support social distancing. As part of the Pinstone Street scheme, diversions will be in place for some buses that normally travel through the city centre. More information is available at travelsouthyorkshire.com. Hand washing and hygiene The Council will be carrying out additional cleaning in public areas including the regular sanitizing of benches. Hand sanitiser stations will also be available across the city centre for you to use, so please do this regularly and avoid touching your face. Temporary toilets will also be available in the Peace Gardens, with attendants on hand at all times to manage queues. The toilets will be cleaned frequently and sterilised, with hand sanitizer provided in each cubicle. Toilets will also be available in the Moor Market.

ANGLERS FACE LOCKOUT FROM NEW MARINE ZONES Recreational sea anglers in England face the prospect of being locked out of some of their favourite fishing grounds if Ministers go ahead and implement the recommendations of the Benyon Review of Highly Protected Marine Areas which was published this week. Despite recognising the economic importance of recreational sea angling and highlighting the importance of meaningful stakeholder engagement and partnership working, the Review Panel did not include any angling representatives nor anyone with a detailed knowledge of the sector. Consequently, low impact recreational fishing was treated as having equivalence with damaging industrial practices such as trawling, dredging and drilling. With 46 sites identified in the report as candidates for a network of new Highly Protected Marine Zones covering up to 10% of English seas, anglers could see themselves no longer able to fish in popular places such as Poole, Langstone and Chichester Harbours in the South; the Dogger Bank, Wash, North Norfolk Coast and Blackwater and Crouch Estuaries in the East; Plymouth, Falmouth and the Severn Estuary in the South-West and Morecambe Bay in the North-West. The Review, chaired by former Fisheries Minister Richard Benyon, acknowledges that the UK currently has a range of protections in place through a network of 355 Marine Protected Areas, which offer protections for a designated feature or habitat within their boundaries. The proposed Highly Protected Marine Areas would go further: ‘...by taking a ‘whole site approach’ and only permitting certain activities within their boundaries such as vessel transit, scuba diving and kayaking. Activities that could have a damaging effect on habitats or wildlife, including

fishing (both commercial and recreational), construction and dredging would be banned. The Review claims the introduction of such areas could lead to a significant biodiversity boost for our seas by giving our marine life the best chance to recover and thrive’. In its evidence to the panel, the Angling Trust highlighted good practice from around the world where far from excluding recreational fishing many marine protected areas are actually designated as recreational only zones in acknowledgement of the light impact that rod and line fishing has on fish stocks when compared to commercial netting or trawling. Furthermore, the presence of sea anglers in these zones serves to provide a system of enforcement and monitoring which would otherwise be largely absent. Martin Salter, Head of Policy at the Angling Trust and author of Keep Australia Fishing (a study into marine park policy) said: “Whilst the Angling Trust welcomes any attempt to rebuild fish stocks and reduce the unsustainable commercial exploitation of the oceans we are deeply disappointed that no recreational fishing representatives were appointed to the Benyon review panel and, as a result, no distinction has been made between the negligible impacts of rod and line fishing and the devastation caused by the dredging, trawling and drilling industries. Excluding sea anglers from Highly Protected Marine Areas is not just unfair - it’s counterproductive. “We need anglers as eyes and ears on the seas to report transgressions and to ensure compliance, otherwise the whole system will be open to abuse. We also need to build community support for marine conservation and my experience from Australia, where the government tried unsuccessfully to lock anglers out of these zones, showed that such an approach actually damaged rather than improved progress in delivering marine protected areas.”

The Owls are pleased to confirm a range of rebate options for Season Ticket holders unable to attend the five outstanding 2019/20 home fixtures in light of the COVID19 pandemic. Championship football returns this Saturday when Wednesday host Nottingham Forest behind closed doors and all paid Season Ticket holders aged 18 and over (due to iFollow terms and conditions) will have the opportunity to watch the remaining nine home and away games via the club’s live streaming service as one of the various rebate options. In addition to this package, every over-18 Season Ticket holder will receive a £25 ticket voucher and £25 WednesdayCard points voucher redeemable in the Owls Megastore. Alternatively, supporters can opt for a donation to the club, our youth academy or Community Programme. Other options include credits towards future Season Tickets/matchday tickets or WednesdayCard points or a full pro rata refund from fixtures played behind closed doors The iFollow streaming option is available now given the time sensitivity and imminent resumption of the season. All other options will follow from Monday 29 June as we work through the sizeable task of facilitating the recent move to our new ticketing website tickets.swfc.co.uk Supporters are reminded to visit the new site with SeatGeek and reset your password in order to select a preferred rebate option.
