PUBS, CLUBS AND MORE TO BE ECO SOFAS OPEN FOR BUSINESS FROM 4TH JULY Don’t Buy New! RE-UPHOLSTERY is the answer! Boris Johnson has revealed in Parliament that from 4th July, pubs and restaurants will be allowed to reopen both indoors and outdoors, as long as they put in safety guidelines and online table service. In a statement in Parliament on 23rd June 2020 the Prime Minister said “We will reopen restaurants and pubs. All hospitality indoors will be limited to table service and our guidance will encourage minimum staff and customer contact”. He also mentioned venues will be asked to help the

NHS Test and Trace app by collecting data. “Collecting contact details from customers, as happens with other countries, and we will work with the sector to make this manageable.” The Prime Minister also mentioned that the government will be releasing guidance for pubs to follow upon re-opening. At the time of this newspaper going to press the guidance had not yet been published. Hotels, bed and breakfasts, campsites, caravan parks, hair salons and barbers but with visors worn,

playgrounds, museums, galleries, theme parks, outdoor gyms and arcades, libraries, social clubs and community centres are all allowed to open too. Nightclubs, spas, indoor soft play areas, bowling alleys, water parks, indoor gyms, nail bars, swimming pools and water parks are still under review. Boris says: “From the outset we have trusted in the common sense and perseverance of the British people. We have been clear that our cautious relaxation of the guidance is entirely

conditional on our continued defeat of the virus. The number of new infections is now declining by between 2 and 4% every day and we created a human shield around the NHS and in turn

our doctors and nurses have protected us. “Today we can say that our long national hibernation is beginning to come to an end… the bustle is starting to come back.”

BE A SUCCESSFUL QUITTER IN 2020 Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping

smoking Sarah has saved over £180 in a very short space of time and plans to treat herself with a new wardrobe full of clothes. Sarah would tell anyone thinking about stopping smoking to never touch them as they control you, you don’t control them. Yorkshire Smoke Free would like to advise that during this current time of uncertainty due to the Covid 19 virus, we are still offering smoking cessation support. Appointments continue to take place by way of telephone support. Please do not hesitate to contact the service on 0114 321649.

Theo’s 30 in 30 challenge raises more than £10,000 thanks to toddlers like Tilly In May, The Children’s Hospital Charity launched Theo’s 30 in 30’ challenge to encourage supporters to raise £30 in 30 days. Among those who have taken on the challenge is 3-year-old Tilly Wild from Sheffield, who raised money to thank the Eye Department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for her care since October 2019. Mum Natalie recalls: “Tilly woke up one day screaming ‘mummy my eyes have stopped working, I can’t see you. She also said that the light was hurting her eyes. “We went to the Emergency Department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. From the minute we walked in, they were amazing.” Tilly was examined by the staff, who noticed a problem with her left eye and quickly referred her to the Eye Department. It was soon confirmed that Tilly had cataracts on both of her eyes. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. While common in older adults as a result of aging, they are rare in children and can cause blindness if left untreated.

Natalie continued: “Both of the doctors who saw us stayed well past the end of the clinic to see Tilly and make sure we were cared for. They then arranged a CT scan to rule out a brain tumour, which thankfully came back all clear at around 4am the next morning. “Tilly then had an MRI scan and the Eye Department examined her further while she was under anaesthetic. The speed at which her care happened was phenomenal.” “Over the first few visits, Tilly was very nervous and often uncooperative, so the team came up with lots of new ways to test her vision and get the best out of her every time. They also go to great effort to make sure she is looked after by the same team each time so they can build up a relationship.” In December, Tilly had the first of her cataracts removed and after nine weeks of regular check-ups to monitor the healing, had 20/20 vision in her left eye. The operation to remove the second cataract then followed in March. Natalie added: “The coronavirus pandemic hit two weeks later, and we’ve still been visiting Sheffield Children’s for check-ups. The staff have made every effort to ensure we feel safe and we’ve also had regular phone calls to ensure we are supported at every turn, with Tilly’s health and wellbeing paramount.” “Tilly is now 10 weeks post-surgery and she’s doing fantastically well, getting used to seeing the world again through her new glasses. She’ll soon move onto some special bifocals to help her to start to read.” To say thank you, Tilly took on a scootering challenge for her

30 days. She raised a phenomenal £2,255 for The Children’s Hospital Charity, which will be dedicated to supporting the Eye Department. Natalie continues: “Scootering is quite a difficult thing to do when you are seeing the world in a whole new way, but Tilly has done really well. As a family, we just wanted to say a huge thank you to every member of the Eye Department for everything they have done. “The worry of Tilly losing her vision has made us aware of how skilfully and tirelessly the staff have worked to ensure her eyesight is the best it can be. They have made sure Tilly has the best possible chance of living life to her full potential and we will always be indebted to them and words cannot express how grateful we are.” Cheryl Davidson, Events Fundraising Manager at The Children’s Hospital Charity added: “We are delighted that in just under two months since it was first launched, Theo’s 30 in 30 challenge has raised more than £10,000 for Sheffield Children’s thanks to our supporters making a difference from home. “It’s so moving to hear about Tilly’s journey over the past few months and the excellent care she received at our hospital. We continue to wish Tilly all the best in her treatment and we would like to say a huge, heartfelt thank you to her and everyone who supported her amazing fundraising.” To sign up to Theo’s 30 in 30 challenge, visit: https://www. tchc.org.uk/events/theos-30-in-30.html

I had this crazy dream where I was virtually weightless... I was like 0mg. I broke my finger last week... On the other hand I’m OK. I’m on a plane and the lunch choices are white meat chicken or German sausage. Unfortunately, I’m seated in the last row. I’m hoping for the breast, but preparing for the wurst. Did you know that 97% of the world is stupid? Luckily I’m in the other 5%. I warned my daughter about using her whistle inside and gave her one last chance. Unfortunately, she blew it. I called the doctor “My wife is going into labour! What should I do?” “Is this her first child?” he asked. “No, this is her husband.” Yesterday I purchased a world map...gave my son a dart and said to her “throw this and wherever it lands, I’m taking you for a holiday”. Turns out we’re spending three weeks behind the fridge. Did you know that there are no canaries in the Canary Islands? And the same thing applies to the Virgin Islands; There are no canaries there either. Have you ever tried eating a clock? It’s really time consuming, especially if you go for seconds. What’s Dracula’s favourite type of coffee? Decoffinated. I’m making a new documentary on how to fly a plane. We’re currently filming the pilot. Today, I got a job working in an elevator... It has its ups and downs.

World Snooker qualifiers to take place at EIS Sheffield The qualifying rounds of snooker’s Betfred World Championship will take place from July 21 to 28 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. All tour players seeded outside the top 16 will need to make it through the qualifiers to earn a coveted spot at the Crucible Theatre, for the final stages which will run from July 31 to August 16. There will also be 16 players invited by the WPBSA to compete, bringing the field for the qualifying rounds up to 128. WST and the WPBSA are working closely with the UK Government to assist players coming from outside the UK in regard to visas, quarantine and travel issues. Regulations on Covid-19 testing, sanitisation and social distancing at the qualifying rounds will follow government guidelines, with details of the precise arrangements to be announced soon. The qualifying rounds will be staged behind closed doors. Despite the current challenges which sport faces globally, total prize money for the 2020 Betfred World Championship remains at a record £2.4 million, with the winner to receive £500,000. There is a new structure for the qualifiers this year, as follows: The 16 players invited by WPBSA will join players seeded 81-128 in Round One. Those 64 players play each other, with the 32 winners going into Round Two. Round Two: those 32 winners will face players seeded 49-80.

Round Three: those 32 winners will face players seeded 17-48. Round Four: those 32 winners play each other, with the 16 winners going through to the Crucible to face the top 16 seeds. All matches will be best of 11 frames, up until Round Four which will be best of 19. Playing the first three rounds with a best of 11 frame format allows those matches to be completed in a single session and therefore minimises the risk of breaching social distancing guidelines for the safety of players, officials and crew. Details of the format of Round Four, known as Judgement Day, will be released soon. WST Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We are delighted to stage the qualifying rounds at the English Institute of Sport as we know from many years of experience that it is a fantastic venue. We look forward to working with the venue to ensure that the health and safety of our players and officials is the highest priority throughout the event. We have already proved that we are at the forefront of sport by staging events in the current conditions. Last year, Gary Wilson came through the qualifying rounds and went on to reach the semi-finals at the Crucible Fans who had bought tickets for the qualifiers will automatically receive a full refund within seven to ten working days. Any fans not receiving a refund within this time frame are advised to contact their ticket provider. The draw and format of the event will be announced in due course. The Betfred World Championship is supported by Sheffield City Council.

Keep Sheffield’s parks clean and tidy With more lovely weather expected and a rise in park visitor numbers, Sheffieldl Council are asking people to help keep the city’s parks clean and tidy. With new restrictions allowing groups of up to six, from different households, to meet outdoors, and after temperatures soared last weekend thousands of local people flocked to enjoy time in Sheffield’s many beautiful green open spaces. Although most residents take pride in the city’s parks and respect the natural environment, many have abused Sheffield’s green havens, leaving bags of rubbish, litter, bottles & cans, food waste and even scorching grass from the use of barbeques.

The council have put in extra resources and are working really hard to keep them looking lovely and safe for visitors, but need everyone to do their bit. If the bins are full, please take your rubbish home and recycle what you can. Overflowing bins in parks and green spaces can be reported to parksandcountryside@sheffield.gov.uk Antisocial behaviour can be reported to South Yorkshire Police on 101. People found dropping litter or dumping waste may be fined at least £80 or prosecuted During the last couple of weeks teams from Sheffield City Council’s parks & countryside service and it’s Streets Ahead contractor, Amey, have been working hard to keep Sheffield’s green spaces clean and safe for everyone to use. Volunteers and members of the public have also been doing their bit to restore parks to their natural beauty. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “Our many parks

are one of Sheffield’s unique and great features, and during lockdown have provided our residents with a place to relax, take exercise, clear their minds and breathe in the fresh air. “I know it’s been a blessing for many that restrictions have eased and groups are being allowed to meet outdoors and we want people to enjoy our natural surroundings. But it cannot come at the cost of our green spaces being ruined. “We want local people to make the most of our parks but we must insist that everyone shows respect and cleans up after themselves. The scenes I saw after the weekend were unacceptable. It’s simple, if you can carry stuff to the park, you can take it away. “Our teams have tripled their efforts and been working extremely hard to clear up other people’s mess, which frankly should not be necessary. I know that a lot of local people have also been voluntarily doing their bit to help, we are very grateful for this but must stress that their safety comes first. We don’t want anyone putting themselves at risk because others are being inconsiderate.

“I ask, please, for everyone’s sake don’t spoil our parks, let’s make sure we can all enjoy them.” The council is emptying bins in most parks daily, with busy sites such as Endcliffe being attended several times per day. Daily litter picking is being carried out, with additional staff working evenings and weekends to help cope with the volume of waste, with around a third of staff time being spent removing rubbish. Amey are also providing extra support as required. Additional large capacity bins and recycling bins are being placed at busy park locations. Responding to complaints, two pickup loads of rubbish per day were removed out of Endcliffe Park alone, by staff whose main role should be gardening. Litter enforcement officers are patrolling some parks where issues are highest, and South Yorkshire Police are visiting key sites to help maintain social distancing and address antisocial behaviour.

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice how do you eat yours?

FOLLOWING a 6% increase in pork pie sales during the UK’s lockdown period, a survey has revealed that the North’s favourite accompaniments to the British classic snack are condiments (mustard, ketchup and brown sauce) - with a combined total of 28% of those who eat pork pies and prefer at least one side choosing this option. Pork Farms commissioned the online YouGov survey, which reached more than 2,000 members of the public, to discover how the nation likes to eat their pork pie. While the overwhelming majority of people surveyed, who eat pork pies and prefer at least one side, said they preferred to eat theirs with condiments, the region is the most likely area of England to eat with pork pie with a hot side (mushy peas, baked beans, chips and gravy), with 16% of the vote. The region is also home to England’s biggest fans of brown sauce, with 13% of the vote. Mike Holton, brand manager at Pork Farms

said: “There’s no doubt that pork pies are classic British fridge-staples, with over half of UK shoppers having purchased at least one of the lunchbox, picnic and buffet staples within the last year. We’ve also seen these figures grow by an additional 6% within the last 12 weeks, so it is really interesting to see the vast differences in people preferences dependent on their age, demographic and location. Results showed that nationwide, 18-24-yearolds, who eat pork pies and prefer at least one side, are most likely to eat theirs with a hot side (31%) - in comparison to 5% of baby boomers (people ages 55+). Overwhelmingly, the survey also found that our older generations, who eat pork pies and prefer at least one side, were more likely to eat theirs with pickles - 38% of 45-54-year olds prefer pickles in comparison to just 13% of 18-24-year olds. The survey also found stark differences in the way that pork pies are consumed within our nations, in Wales 24% of those who eat pork pies prefer theirs with pickles and 40% of people, who eat pork pies and prefer at least one side, in Scotland prefer theirs with condiments, specifically brown sauce 17%.

The Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust Outdoor Learning team have launched a programme of offers to support teachers during this transition period in education. It’s a tough time for children and teachers alike as children return to school, so the Outdoor learning team at the Trust want to be able to offer support where possible, helping teachers and schools to navigate their way through to the school holidays and beyond, taking advantage of the beautiful summer weather and social distancing outside. During lockdown the Outdoor learning team have already been supporting teachers and homeschooling parents with free online resources, wildlife challenge videos and pre-

school activity ideas and have now widened the offer to all local schools including; A wide range of FREE curriculum based 1 hour sessions, from natural art to exploring local wildlife, deliverable with classes on school grounds, or in a nearby green space. A brand new FREE session about litter, recycling, and the environment which can be delivered to a class or the whole school as an assembly. A training session for teachers to give them the skills to work outside more, either temporarily or as part of a longer term plan. Sarah Lamb Outdoor Learning Officer at Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust said, “Using your outdoor space has been identified by the government as a great way of social distancing, and fortunately, we are masters of the outdoor space! So now that schools are beginning to open, we want to help you to really make the most of your outdoor spaces or local green space.” See www.wildsheffield.com/outdoor-learning to find out more and talk to the team about booking.

windrush day 2020 On 22nd June 1948 the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex, bringing with it a workforce of around 500 Caribbean migrants to settle in the UK. Following the destruction caused during World War II, Britain was in need of rebuilding. A call was put out to Caribbean countries within the British Empire and hundreds answered the call. This was the first time so many Caribbean people had come to live in  Britain and many more arrived in the following years. The Windrush Generation played a significant role in getting the country back on its feet, with many migrants settling in industrial towns and cities, including Sheffield. Under normal circumstances activities would have been planned to celebrate Windrush Day 2020 across Sheffield’s BAME communities. However due to COVID-19 plans are being postponed to later in the year, hopefully during Black History Month in October. Councillor Terry Fox, Deputy Leader at Sheffield City Council said: “Despite the courageous efforts of our nation, Britain was decimated during World War II. Sheffield in particular suffered huge destruction during the Blitz and we needed help to rebuild the city and the country. The contribution that the Windrush generation made during a pivotal point in the UK’s history, and the history of our city cannot be underestimated. It was not easy for these people, they faced much discrimination, but they stepped forward and played a huge part in rebuilding our future, a future which they and their ancestors are an integral part of. The impact of COVID-19 means we are unable to celebrate their contribution and give thanks in the way we would like to on this significant day. But I would still like to personally thank them, and all those who we have welcomed in to our societies, not only for helping us regenerate our nation but for enriching our lives with cultural diversity. We want to pay tribute with the energy and vibrancy that our black communities deserve, and we will do this later in the year during Black History Month celebrations.” Councillor Abtisam Mohamed, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills at Sheffield City Council is leading on Sheffield’s Racial Equality Commission. Through this commission the council, citywide partners and local black communities hope to identify and affect change around the nature, extent, causes and impact of race inequality in the City and to make recommendations for tackling them. Cllr Mohamed added: “Recent developments in the Black Lives Matter Movement have brought racial issues to the forefront across the world, and we are supporting this movement because today black people still face serious racial prejudice in many areas of their lives. Systemic racism runs through all societies, but it’s hidden, it’s not obvious to see, and in most cases it’s not intended. From education and employment to opportunity and involvement, we must identify these issues so that we can begin to understand how to bring about true racial equality. Everyone has a right to live without fear of being judged; or being treated differently because of the colour of their skin. Throughout history our citizens have campaigned for human rights and equality, and

Fishing’s newcomers urged to protect wildlife from dangers of angling litter New anglers who have taken up the sport since lockdown are being reminded by the Angling Trust and the RSPCA about the dangers to wildlife from angling litter. With fishing one of the first sports to resume following easing of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, many people have taken up angling for the first time to enjoy the outdoors and the benefits to health and wellbeing it brings. As a result, stores across the country have sold out of fishing starter kits and rod licence sales have increased. With more people out on the bank or beach, the Angling Trust and the RSPCA are reminding anglers to discard of litter responsibly to protect wildlife from harm and keep the outdoors clean and safe for all to enjoy. The initiative comes as the RSPCA revealed earlier this month that over the past five years, the RSPCA has received more than 21,600 reports of animals injured or caught in litter, of which three-quarters (15,183) of calls related to angling litter – some ghost gear from commercial fishing boats but others due to snagged fishing line. 1. Retrieve any snagged fishing line Fishing line can accidentally get snagged in overhanging trees or rocks beneath the water surface. If left, birds and other animals can become entangled in line and hooks causing themselves serious injury, or even death. Where it is safe to do so, retrieve this line and take it home with you to recycle through the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS) . If you cannot retrieve the line yourself then note its location on a map and report it to the landowner or the Environment Agency environmental incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60. To prevent line becoming lost in the first instance, it is good to look around where you are fishing before you start. Avoid vegetation or obstructions in the water. If there are overhanging trees extending far out on the other side of the bank, it might be better to set up further along the bank.

2. Recycling all fishing line through the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS) is a nationwide initiative to enable old fishing line to be recycled rather than going to landfill. There are recycling bins at locations across the country where anglers can take old fishing line to be recycled, or you can send the fishing line in the post. This includes angling litter recycling points sited at the RSPCA’s four wildlife centres at West Hatch in Taunton, Somerset; Stapeley Grange in Nantwich, Cheshire; East Winch near King’s Lynn, Norfolk and Mallydams Wood in Hastings, East Sussex as well as hundreds of other sites throughout the UK. 3. Leave no trace Always take your litter and equipment away with you and dispose of it correctly. Better still we encourage everyone to follow the Angling Trust’s Take 5 campaign, supported by the Environment Agency and part-funded from fishing licence income, which involves spending five minutes when you finish fishing to pick up any litter you can see and take it home with you. We recognise a lot of litter may have been left by others but picking up just a few pieces of litter every time you go out will make a huge difference in protecting wildlife from harm. Picking up a single piece of litter could save an animal’s life. The Angling Trust and RSPCA are also concerned about line used in other pastimes, such as crab lines which are popular in the summer. They can cause severe problems, as demonstrated by two swans that got entangled in crab lines in Hampshire. We urge people to purchase crabbing equipment that uses baited pouches rather than crab lines with hooks, and to dispose of crab line properly, cutting crab line into small pieces and placing in the domestic bin to avoid hurting wildlife. If you are new to fishing you also may not have realised you need a rod licence to fish in England and Wales. It’s also important to remember that not only is leaving a rod unattended is illegal, it also poses a serious danger to wildlife. Last month, the RSPCA issued a reminder after a herring gull was trapped by an unattended, fully-baited rod in North Wales. More information about where you can fish and what equipment you need is available in this Angling Trust blog.

BLADES SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT SINCE JANUARY United tasted defeat for the first time since January after going down 3-0 on Tyneside against Newcastle United. Following a goalless first-half, the game turned six minutes into the second stanza when John Egan was dismissed for a second yellow. The home side seized their opportunity, netting three times through Allan Saint-Maximin, Matt Ritchie and Joelinton. Boss Chris Wilder made one change to the side which drew at Aston Villa with John Fleck fit again to take his place in midfield, as John Lundstram dropped to the bench. Striker Richairo Živković was also named amongst the substitutes, but Jack O’Connell and David McGoldrick narrowly missed out through injury. Both teams again took the knee in support of

the Black Lives Matter movement in another powerful statement, whilst a period of silence also took place just before in memory of those who have lost their lives to COVID-19. United began brightly with Ollie Norwood’s first minute free-kick making Newcastle ‘keeper Martin Dubravka work as he fisted a dangerous cross clear under pressure. On six minutes after a cross from Enda Stevens was deflected behind for a corner, Norwood’s deep delivery just eluded Jack Robinson who ghosted in around the back. After the Blades dominated the opening 10 minutes, the hosts eventually grabbed a foothold. It was from the Magpies’ first corner where an opening almost occurred as the ball stuck inside the area prompting a scramble which ended with the Blades clearing the danger. The hosts then worked the ball down the right for the dangerous SaintMaximim to drive into the area, but his cut-back landed between two black and white shirts. With 12 minutes gone United created another half chance after good work down the right. George Baldock’s cross

found the head of Oli McBurnie but his connection was weak as his effort was gathered by Dubravka. A minute later and Dean Henderson was called into action for the first time. The ball was worked into the path of Ritchie to strike from range, but the United stopper flung his way to his left to make a good stop. Newcastle created the best chance of the half on 17 minutes. A swift counter which began deep inside their own half was taken on by Miguel Almiron who sprinted into United territory before sliding in Joelinton who was through on the angle. The finish though was lacking as the striker scuffed his effort harmlessly towards goal after kicking the ground when attempting to finish. Egan blocked a goalbound effort from Jonjo Shelvey as Newcastle began to enjoy a strong period in the game, but following the drinks break, Wilder’s side came back into the contest. Again, it was good work down the right involving Sander Berge and Baldock which ended with the latter crossing for Billy Sharp,

but the striker fired over first time with an effort form 18-yards. Referee David Coote reached for his pocket for the first time when Egan and Joelinton were cautioned after a minor scuffle. Just before the break a Fleck corner was met by Egan at the back post, but Newcastle got the luck of the bounce as they smuggled the loose ball clear. Just six minutes into the second half, United found themselves down to 10 men. The Blades were on the attack when Fleck attempted to seek out Sharp. Newcastle cleared long downfield, with Egan challenging with Joelinton. The luck of the bounce favoured the Newcastle striker and as he attempted to sprint clear, he was pulled back by the Irishman who was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence. Soon after the Blades were behind. Ritchie played in a low cross which looked innocuous, but Stevens missed the ball completely when attempting to clear first time allowing SaintMaximin, lurking just behind, to drill the ball beyond Henderson. The Blades responded

well to going behind and came close to levelling the game soon after. Sharp produced some fine build up play to swing a great ball wide to Baldock. The wing-back steadied himself before delivering deep towards the back post where Sharp had sprinted into the box, but headed wide of Dubravka’s near post. At the other end Almiron should have done better after being teed up by Saint-Maximin, as Wilder made the first change

with Lundstram replacing Berge. Despite being a man light, United looked comfortable but any momentum was disrupted with the home side’s second goal. Ritchie advanced forward from deep, with Newcastle holding a 2v1 against Baldock, the Scotland international opted to go for goal himself, firing a stinging 22-yard strike beyond Henderson. United refused to lie

down and almost cut the deficit. Sharp showed determination to win the ball inside the Newcastle area before driving to the by-line. He cut the ball back for the advancing Stevens, but he blazed over after connecting with a shot from just inside the area. Wilder gave Zivkovic a debut from the bench, replacing Sharp whilst Luke Freeman also came on for Fleck. The changes didn’t turn

the tide though and Newcastle sealed the game with a third on 78 minutes when Almiron’s low cross was converted by Joelinton. Wilder made a further change before the end with Kieron Freeman replacing McBurnie. The Blades had the last meaningful opportunity of the afternoon when Chris Basham’s dangerous low cross just eluded the outstretched leg of the advancing Zivkovic.

Garry Monk hailed the character of his players after a last-gasp Connor Wickham equaliser salvaged a point against Nottingham Forest. The Midlanders appeared to be heading for victory courtesy of Joe Lolley’s second half opener as the Championship resumed at Hillsborough. Wednesday had the final word, though, with Wickham posting his first goal since returning to the club on loan back in January.

Monk said: “I was really pleased with the performance and the players can be pleased with themselves. They showed real character because we didn’t deserve to be behind and it’s easy in that situation to feel sorry for yourself. “But they kept their heads up, kept pressing and totally deserved the equaliser right at the end. It could have been more really because I think we should have had a penalty near the end but

that one wasn’t to be. “A point was the least we deserved and on another day we win that game comfortably.” The Forest clash was the first of nine games Wednesday will play behind closed doors and Monk felt the players coped well with the complete change in environment. He added: “It was strange but we knew it would be. But it’s the same for everyone and we have to get on with it. Today I

thought we coped really well, we missed the roar of the crowd, of course we did, but the players put that to the back of their minds and made the best of the situation. “These are strange times, we now have eight games to go and they will all be played in a very short period of time. So we will assess everyone in the week through training, we have a long trip next week and we have to be at the best level we can be.”

The least we deserved

The Millers are planning on this being a lighthearted production which will run for around an hour-and-a-half and will be largely unscripted, but, as in previous weeks
