Sheffield music and sports venues face uncertainty Music and sports venues in Yorkshire are to be mothballed and staff are facing redundancy because of the continuing coronavirus pandemic. A number of venues will remain shut, including Sheffield City Hall, Sheffield Arena, Scarborough Spa and Whitby Pavilion, owners Sheffield City Trust (SCT) said. The Covid-19 lockdown has left it in a “critical position”, SCT said. It has “begun a consultation process which may lead to redundancies”. Many of the SCT’s 750 employees have been on the government’s furlough scheme since March.
In a letter sent to staff seen by the BBC, the trust said that when the scheme changes in August “there will be increased financial burden to employers’ and in our current position we are unable to sustain further financial pressure.” SCT chief executive Andrew Snelling said the leisure and entertainment industry was facing “very challenging times”. “It has become apparent that concerts, shows and large attendance events will not be possible in the short and medium term, so this leaves us with decisions to make regarding how we sustain venues such as Sheffield Arena and
Sheffield City Hall,” he said. “There are also specific issues with some of our sporting facilities, which means it may not be viable to open them safely even after we receive the go ahead.
“It is not a decision that has been taken lightly but venues that are generating no income will only need a much-reduced workforce to carry out essential maintenance while they are mothballed awaiting a
change in circumstances.” SCT said it was awaiting further detailed information on the government’s recently announced £1.57bn emergency support package to help protect the future of UK cultural venues.

WST REMAIN HOPEFUL OF CRUCIBLE CROWD The Betfred World Championship starts on July 31 and fans with tickets are being given the option to register interest in attending the Crucible if government regulations allow an audience. Snooker’s biggest tournament will run from July 31 to August 16 at the famous Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. WST remains in discussion with the UK government around the possibility of safely welcoming spectators. Otherwise, the event will be played behind closed doors. All fans with tickets have been contacted this week giving them the chance to state whether they want to be considered for a seat in the reduced capacity audience. This is an unparalleled opportunity to be among the few fans present in the arena for one of the great events in sport. Under these circumstances, any fans attending will be strictly required to follow regulations on social distancing and sanitisation, which will be detailed by WST prior to arrival. Ticket holders also have the option of a full refund,
or a transfer of their order to the 2021 Betfred World Championship at the Crucible. WST Chairman Barry Hearn said: “Detailed discussions with the relevant organisations are ongoing and we are determined to explore every avenue. We realise that to attend the Betfred World Championship is a once in a lifetime experience for many fans, and for everyone in the arena it is a magical occasion. “The highest priority of course is the health and safety of fans and everyone connected with the event, so spectators will only be allowed if we are confident that this priority can be
met. But we are working hard towards making this happen if it is possible. “If there are fans in the arena they will be witnessing a unique sporting occasion. This would be a golden ticket, for the very lucky few. We urge fans to let us know their preferred option as soon as possible. “We have already staged two successful snooker events in recent weeks and led the way in terms of the return of live sport.” Ticket holders are urged to check their inboxes and respond with their desired option by Monday 13 July, 12:00pm.

He raises his eyes to the heavens and said: “I can’t believe it’s not Buddha!” I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger... Then it hit me. What is the best time of the day, hands-down? 6.30. I entered my Chihuahua in an ‘ugliest dog’ contest and I won first place! The dog came third. My wife hated my impulse purchase of a revolving chair, but then she sat on it. Eventually she came round. What do you call a 7ft caveman? A Neandertall. My son asked me what procrastinate means. I said: “I’ll tell you later.” My wife is incredibly smart. When I called her from my buddy’s phone she answered “hey love.” She already knew it was me!

dealing with dementia in lockdown - top tips to help
During lockdown, many who are in isolation or shielding may be worried about about the long term effects. In particular, early symptoms of dementia may be exacerbated by the prolonged restrictions on normal life. However there are things that can be done to self-help in this period. Eating healthily, being physically active and socialising are all great ways of helping to stave off the onset of dementia. With already over 850,000 of us in the UK diagnosed with symptoms of dementia and the figure expected to reach 2 million by 2051 the impact on sufferers and their families is immense. There are, however, things we can do for ourselves to keep our brains healthier for longer. Research tells us that exercise is one of a number of lifestyle factors which enhances cognitive function and so may delay Alzheimer’s disease – the most common form of dementia. Becoming more active does help Studies have found that being physically active helps to prevent our brains from shrinking as we age and therefore delay the onset of symptoms of dementia. But exercise doesn’t only prevent brain shrinkage it is now believed that aerobic exercise, in particular, may actually increase brain volume. The result of this may be improved memory function, especially in those with existing dementia symptoms. In fact, it is during our middle years when exercise has the optimum impact on our future cognitive function. How does exercise affect our brains? There are a number of ways that exercise can help: • Blood flow As we exercise there is an increase in blood flow throughout our body but especially to the brain. Poor blood flow can hasten the symptoms of dementia by impairing memory but by exercising, our brain receives more
oxygen and essential nutrients which help to protect how the brain functions. • The role of hormones and proteins Those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease have been found to have significantly reduced amounts of specific proteins and hormones in the brain. These play an important role in signalling pathways and so the lack of these results in reduced cognitive function. During exercise hormones and proteins are released which enhance our brain power and help to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s. • Helping our hearts Heart attacks and strokes can lead to impaired cognitive function and heart disease can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Studies have shown that exercising for a minimum of 150 minutes a week is one of the best ways to keep a healthy heart. • Maintaining a healthy weight If glucose levels are too high br ain cells can be damaged and according to research there is an increased risk of developing dementia, in particular in those with type 2 diabetes. Taking regular exercise results in lower glucose levels in the blood and enables the body to use these sugars as energy instead. Creating new neural pathways If specific pathways in the brain are blocked or damaged, exercise can help the brain to create new neural pathways. The transmission of electrical impulses is also increased by exercise which in turn improves its function. Immediate and long-term benefits After only 10 minutes of exercise the benefit to the way our brain functions is noticeable but exercising for a period of 6 months or more can even reverse the effects of dementia. So aerobic exercise undertaken on a regular basis can boost our brains and reduce our chances of getting dementia but are there benefits with other types of exercise too? How to boost brain function during exercise: • Do some resistance training using free
weights while standing unsupported – that way you’re less likely to lose your body’s natural stability. Resistance exercises are important tools against cognitive decline • Combine aerobic and resistance exercises for optimal health benefits • Try shorter bursts of high intensity exercise as along with promoting fat loss it should reduce strains that may occur from longduration exercise • Exercise should be fun – if you choose something you enjoy then you are more likely to stick at it. Exercise doesn’t have to mean running mini marathons – brisk walking, gardening, cycling all count! • Try balancing exercises – those with dementia commonly find they lose their balance so performing balancing exercises or closing your eyes while practising yoga or pilates will challenge your ears and muscles to work more strongly. • Gardening is good exercise Other ways to keep our brains in tip top condition Along with taking regular physical activity there are other lifestyles factors to consider if we want to boost our brain power: • A healthy, well-balanced diet A study from January 2018 in the journal Neurology found that eating a healthy diet full of whole grains, fruits and green leafy vegetables showed a slowing of age-related cognitive decline. • Stay connected Research has found that high social engagement seems to prevent or delay dementia so maintaining those social links is key to keeping the brain healthy. • Keep your brain ticking! It has not yet been proven that cognitive training helps ward off the onset of dementia but learning a new skill or hobby may help preserve brain function.

Baby Basics Sheffield, IDAS, Paces Sheffield, Sheffield Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and Asperger’s Children and Carers Together are set to receive a donation as a thank you for their help with the Covid-19 relief efforts. Charities directly supporting the Sheffield community have been invited to apply to the Jack’s Supports Scheme to receive some well deserved funding. All five charities will receive £500 each to help fund their incredible organisation. Danny Antrobus, Fundraising and Finance Co-ordinator at Asperger’s Children and Carers Together, said: “We support more than 500 families with autistic children all across Sheffield. The closure of face-to-face group events, the loss of familiar routine caused by the current restrictions, has had a severe negative impact on the mental health and isolation of the autistic children and young people we support, as well adding to the stresses and strain for families. Thanks to a grant from Jack’s Supports, we have been able to meet the urgent need for supporting children and families through this difficult time by moving activities online, with new activities available most days. Any family with one or more autistic children in Sheffield is welcome to get support from ACCT and join our wide range of activities - it’s free! Hannah Goulding, Grants and Monitoring Officer
at Paces Sheffield, said: “Everyone at Paces Sheffield is extremely grateful for the support of Jack’s during the current climate. The work which we do here at Paces makes a huge difference on the lives of the children, adults and families who use our services and we are extremely grateful that Jack’s have chosen to support us. As with most charities, it has been a particularly difficult time for our families through the Covid-19 situation, but with help from organisations like Jack’s, we have been able to continue to support them through this.” Ahmed Vaccihyat, Jack’s Sheffield store manager, said: “We launched Jack’s Supports to give something back to the local communities that have supported us since our launch. Each of the charities involved in the scheme do fantastic work in the local area, and we’re delighted that we are in a position to be able to offer our support.” Jack’s supermarket, part of the Tesco family, launched its Jack’s Supports scheme to donate proceeds from the sale of carrier bags to local good causes voted for by its customers. During the pandemic Jack’s have had to adapt their Support scheme by removing voting units from all stores. To ensure charities did not miss out on this vital funding, Jack’s invited charities to apply for funding and chose four charities at random to receive the full grant.

the cost of damages, meaning drivers could be left with hefty sums to pay including the cost of third party claims. The UK is gradually coming out of lockdown and many people will naturally be looking to enjoy the eased restrictions, but we’d urge people to think first before heading out to the pub or a restaurant; if you’re planning to have a drink, think about how you will get there and back safely first. Remember, there are different factors that could impact your ability to drive safely. Weight, age and metabolism all play a part in alcohol tolerance, meaning it is virtually impossible to know if you are safe to drive. Even the smallest amount of alcohol will affect how you drive. The only way to be really safe is to avoid drinking altogether when you know you are taking the car.”

Admiral urges drivers to be safe and think before getting behind the wheel Clare Egan, Head of Motor at Admiral, said: “With pubs and restaurants re-opening and licensing laws being relaxed, we could see people tempted to get behind the wheel after a drink but it’s vital to understand the implications of taking this risk. Being caught over the limit can see a driver face up to 6 months in prison, an unlimited fine and a driving ban of at least one year, not to mention the potential life-changing impact it can have if it leads to a crash. Those who are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol could find their insurance premiums increasing by more than 250% - if they can get insurance at all. But the financial penalties don’t stop there, if you do have an accident while drinkdriving many insurers will refuse to cover

Take a Friend Fishing is back for 2020! The Angling Trust, Angling Trades Association and Environment Agency have teamed up to give all anglers the perfect opportunity to introduce someone they know to fishing this month with angling being the ideal activity following relaxation of some aspects of “lockdown”. Take a Friend Fishing (TAFF) is back for 2020. From 4th July to the 19th July (inclusive), fishing licence holding anglers will be able to register for a free one-day Environment Agency fishing licence worth £6 to take someone they know fishing. To take advantage of this offer, all that licence holding anglers need to do is to visit www. takeafriendfishing.co.uk and provide some simple contact details including their fishing licence number and the date of the fishing trip. This will notify their friend who, after checking their details are correct, will be able to go fishing with the fishing licence holder, on the selected day using their own free one-day fishing licence. To support Take a Friend Fishing the Angling Trust’s Get Fishing Team have created a list of fishing venues that are ideal to take someone during Take a Friend Fishing. They are the perfect places to take a newcomer or anybody who wants to get back into angling after a break from the sport - www.getfishing.org.uk/location Kevin Austin, Deputy Director for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment at the Environment Agency said ‘We are delighted to support the relaunch of the Take a Friend Fishing initiative. This is the ideal time for anglers to introduce someone new to our wonderful sport. By providing a free one-day licence to newcomers we hope many will discover the enjoyment of fishing for the first time and once hooked will
be inspired to go again and again. “Angling is a healthy activity which anyone can participate in and provides endless options for being outside in the environment, why not encourage a friend to give it a go?”
Clive Copeland, Head of the Participation at the Angling Trust commented “It’s brilliant to see so many people trying fishing, and the busy angling venues we have seen all over the country are testament to a massive rise in participation numbers. This is not only amongst tens of thousands of people trying fishing for the first time but also the many lapsed anglers who want to get back into angling with friends, family members and colleagues who recognise that this is the perfect time to take a friend fishing.”

Andrew Race, Chairman, Angling Trades Association (ATA) added “The ATA’s work with initiatives such as Take a Friend Fishing (TAFF) is long standing. Recruitment is vital to angling as a pastime and to the industry it supports. The opportunity to work collectively with other major stakeholders such as the Angling Trust represents a serious investment for the sport going forward. Recent events have focussed people’s minds on the importance of recreation both mentally and physically, and angling provides the ideal opportunity to achieve those goals and connect with the environment.” Angling can still be practiced safely and has seen a boom in participation numbers after being one of the first sports to return on 13th May after lockdown guidelines were relaxed. The Angling Trust - the national representative and governing body for angling in England regularly updates its guidelines to anglers, clubs, fisheries, coaches and other angling organisations to ensure fishing can comply with the latest Government guidance during the Covid-19 epidemic. Going fishing is a wonderful way to spend quality time with family and friends and has proven mental health and wellbeing benefits. Prince Abdullah to reclaim ownership of key assets and to improve these assets. Prince Abdullah observed: "When I assumed sole ownership of the Club nine months ago, I committed myself to preserving the Club's heritage, upgrading the Club's physical assets and improving the fan experience. The Covid19 pandemic has certainly brought unexpected challenges but we remain dedicated to our original strategy and bringing the stadium and other properties under the ownership of the Club is an important step in executing on this strategy. We now look forward to capitalising on this important step as we establish the Blades in the Premier League. We'll have more good news soon."
MICKEL IS A MILLER Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the signing of winger Mickel Miller who has penned a two-year deal to become Paul Warne’s first signing ahead of the 2020/21 campaign. The London-born attacker arrives at AESSEAL New York Stadium having been snapped up following the expiration of his deal north of the border with Scottish outfit Hamilton Academicals, with the club awaiting international clearance and ratification from the EFL and FA. The 24-year-old has impressed with the Accies for whom he turned out 68 times in all competitions after signing in 2018. Miller, who is most commonly deployed as a winger, is also capable of operating in central attacking areas and has a keen eye for goal, evidenced by him finishing as Hamilton’s top goalscorer in the 2018/19 campaign. Miller has joined up with his Rotherham United teammates for the early stages of the club’s ‘preseason’ testing at Roundwood. The club are still in discussions with first team duo Lewis Price and Billy Jones about the possible extensions of their stays at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
MISSING REWARDS A SOURCE OF FRUSTRATION Few would have argued against Wednesday going in at half time against Swansea with a goal or two to show for a well-crafted display. The Owls spurned good chances on numerous occasions in the first half and went in at the break frustrated and level. As is so often the case in the Championship, the failings of putting the ball in the net at one end can so easily be punished at the other, as Wednesday saw at the Liberty Stadium. Garry Monk has underlined the importance of scoring when in the ascendancy. “It’s frustrating
because from a coaching point of view, you can see how well the players have done with a very short period of this way of playing. “There is so much they are doing right but then it’s down to that savviness. “You cannot be that dominant and not come out with the rewards. That’s something we’ll have to improve. “We work hard on the training ground and you can see how we are getting into the right positions but you need that clinical edge. “You can see what we are trying to do and that’s the positive side of it, how creative and dangerous we can be
and how solid we can be, like we saw in the first half. “But you must get your rewards when you’re on top.” Having got back straight on the training pitch this morning after yesterday’s long trip back from South Wales, Wednesday’s attention must quickly switch to the Preston clash in midweek. “It will be tough, the same as everyone, all teams are fighting for results,” Monk added. “We know Preston have been a really competitive squad for a number of years now under Alex. “They have good players, good quality but I think for ourselves we need to
turn what has been dominant periods of games into rewards. “We have to get better at that, the hard work is very clear and we can be very dangerous with it and that’s the exciting bit but we have to back that up by being ruthless. “Defensively, we need to cut out those mistakes, it’s as simple as that. “We can’t sit here and feel sorry for ourselves. We have another game in a few days and if we continue to show what we’re doing and be more ruthless, cut out those mistakes, we’ll be in a good position and that’s what we’ve got to believe.”
