A diamond and a gentleman ECO SOFAS Former Wednesday players John Pearson and Mel Sterland have paid tribute to ex-Owls boss Jack Charlton after he passed away last weekend aged 85. The duo both made their professional debuts for Wednesday under World Cup winner Charlton, who the pair held in high regard. Pearson said: “Jack gave me my debut just after I turned 17, he was a great man and a great character. “One of the things that sticks in my mind was after we lost to Brighton in the 1983 FA Cup semi-final.
“I walked into the dressing room and Jack was crying, which really showed me how much he cared about Sheffield Wednesday. “This is a man who has won league titles and the World Cup, but this still mattered so much to him. “And the thing is, he wasn’t upset for himself, he was upset for Sheffield Wednesday, the players and the supporters. “He was all about the team and not himself.” Full back Sterland also came into the Owls first team under Charlton’s stewardship and was full of praise for his former boss.
Sterland said: “I’m absolutely gutted. “He was a brilliant man, I have so many great memories of him. “I remember Ray Blackhall getting injured during a game and the coach John Harris suggested to put me on at right back, I was a midfielder at the time, Jack was saying ‘don’t be stupid!’ “He brought me on and I spent the rest of my career playing that position! He got me doing weights to bulk up, he turned me into a man. “During training sessions, supporters used to be able
to come and watch, he’d be stood with them at the side talking to them all, it’s just the kind of person he was.
“I haven’t got one bad word to say about him, he was a diamond and a gentleman.”

Someone threw a giant bottle of omega-3 pills at me. I’m fine - I only suffered super fish oil injuries. My Wife and I were blissfully happy for 25 magical years.. And then we met... What do you call a hen who counts her eggs? A mathemachicken. I asked my wife for an audiobook for my birthday, but she got me an encyclopedia instead. That spoke volumes. I throw up whenever i hear a joke. It’s a gag reflex.
My wife and I were having this huge argument as to whose turn it is to do laundry. Finally, I threw in the towel. I’d like to thank the Dictionary for teaching me the meaning of the word “plethora”. It really means a lot.

new mobile testing station opens in sheffield
Sheffield City Council is encouraging people to get tested in our effort to combat the spread of the virus in our city. To make testing easier and more accessible for people a new mobile testing facility is being introduced in Sheffield to help people across the city access testing more easily. To enable this to happen we are putting in place an additional mobile testing unit in Sheffield and exploring more ways in which we can support our communities to get tested. People should only book a test if they have symptoms of Covid-19. Tests can be arranged by calling 119, can be booked online here or you can walk-in at the mobile test centre listed below. An additional unit will be at the Olympic Legacy Park Car Park, off the B6085, Worksop Road, S9 3TL. Testing will be available to the public between Saturday 11th – Friday 17th July Tests can be booked online at nhs.co.uk/ Coronavirus, however we do accept walk-ins so you can attend without an appointment. Testing is a vital part in our fight against the spread of Covid-19 in our city and to help reduce the rate of people contracting the virus, we need your help. If you are showing symptoms, however mild, you need to get tested as soon as you can.
If you have any of the following symptoms, call 119 or book to arrange a test: • A high temperature • A new, continuous cough • A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste The aim is to make it easier for people to access a testing facility to prevent transmission of the virus in our communities. To enable this the Council are working in partnership with community organisations across the city to do further work to increase access to testing. Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council Greg Fell said: “UK-wide, it is clear we are out of the first wave of the Coronavirus, but it is far from over. We have to learn to live with it as we will see a rapid spread again if we are not careful. By careful we mean, continuing to wash your hands or use hand sanitiser, keep your distance and wearing a face covering if you are travelling on public transport. Most importantly, if you are feeling poorly or think you have symptoms, no matter how mild, you must stay at home and contact NHS test and trace to arrange a test. Our message is simple, COVID-19 has not gone away and we need our communities’ support in stopping the spread and to help protect our loved ones. The
The BBC have announced that it is to end free TV Licencess for the Over-75s unless you receive Pension Credit. This has highlighted the fact that 3 out of 4 people who are entitled to this benefit don’t claim it! There are other additional benefits avaialbe to recipients of Pension Credit- here we outline some of the basic facts - why not check to see if you are eligible? Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit. It may give you extra money to top up your income once you’ve reached State Pension age. You may be able to claim Pension Credit whether or not you’re still working, although any earnings you have will be taken into account. Pension Credit has two parts: Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit. Guarantee Credit Extra money to make up your weekly income to a minimum level decided by the government. It is available to people who have reached State Pension age Savings Credit Extra money paid to eligible people to reward them for making modest provision for their retirement by having savings or income. Who can claim Guarantee Credit? To qualify for Guarantee Credit, you must: • have reached State Pension age. • have an income lower than the minimum amount the government says you need Your appropriate minimum guarantee This is the minimum amount of money the government says you need to live on each week. The standard amount for a single person is £173.75 and for a couple (married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting) is £265.20 a week. You might be entitled to more than this if you’re disabled, a carer, or have certain housing costs. Income taken into account for Guarantee Credit includes your State Pension, occupational and private pensions, income
from certain benefits, earnings and assumed income from savings. Some types of income are partially or fully disregarded. You can get Pension Credit even if you have savings. Additional amounts In certain circumstances, additional amounts of money may be added to your appropriate minimum guarantee. Severe Disability Addition A Severe Disability Addition is included in the Pension Credit calculation if all of the following apply: • You’re getting one of the following qualifying benefits: Attendance Allowance, the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment, the middle or high rate care components of Disability Living Allowance, Armed Forces Independence Payment, Constant Attendance Allowance • No-one is receiving Carer’s Allowance for looking after you • You live alone, or live with someone who isn’t counted for these calculations (see below). You can be treated as living alone even if someone else lives in the property. For example, someone who receives a qualifying benefit for the Severe Disability Addition wouldn’t be included when looking at who you live with. This means if you’re a couple and both of you receive qualifying benefits, it is possible for you both to qualify, as long as: • No one else counts as living with you • No one is receiving Carer’s Allowance for looking after either one of you Savings Credit You can only get Savings Credit if you reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016, or you have a partner who reached State Pension age before this date and was already receiving it. Savings Credit is extra money for people who have made modest provision for their retirement. However, Savings Credit is being
Council’s focus throughout the pandemic has been to keep people safe, protect the most vulnerable and reopen the city as and when it has been safe to do so. This still remains the case and these continue to be at the forefront of all the decisions we make. We can all do our bit to help prevent the spread of the virus by: • Staying at home if you have symptoms, even if they are mild (this is what makes the most difference). We know that 50% of people with symptoms don’t stay at home so this is the biggest difference you can make. • If you have symptoms, GET A TEST • If you are asked to isolate, it does mean you must stay at home. • Keep your distance, 2m where possible Wash your hands with soap and hot water • Wear a face covering (if you can) when using public transport and when you can’t keep a safe distance from others. With this new mobile testing facility we are making it easier for people to access, so if you have symptoms you can walk in for a test without an appointment. Together we can help keep our communities safe by getting tested if we have symptoms.”

council responds to cycle lane criticism
Sheffield City Council has responded to adverse publicity following news items last week, when an ambulance driver was seen moving cones to gian access in queuing traffic. Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport at Sheffield City Council, said: “The Council is committed to enhancing walking and cycling as a means of reducing congestion, improving air quality, increasing physical activity and creating attractive places. Covid-19 presented an opportunity to trial pedestrianisation and dedicated cycle lanes in a number of areas around the city and, whilst early days, a number of these such a Pinstone Street are already proving popular and successful. The Covid-19 pandemic and Government funding for temporary transport measures enabled us to trial a temporary scheme on Shalesmoor, which went live this week. We understand the ring road is critically important for vehicles, in to and around the city and dedicated cycle lanes in this area is something that has long been called for by active travel groups. We have listened to feedback, and we are carefully reviewing the impact of the scheme, making a number of changes in response to concerns from some residents and businesses. It is important that we continue to work with relevant groups and those affected by the changes so that we can make informed decisions about future active travel measures. We will continue to monitor the impact of these temporary measures and if, once the full impact is known, they are not considered to be delivering the scale of benefits that justify the disruption to the ring road, then a decision will be taken on the appropriate time to withdraw this temporary scheme.”
We intend to conduct on or from the premises the following licensable activities: Sale by retail of alcohol for consumption off the premises: Monday - Sunday 00:00 - 24:00

As pubs and bars in England gradually re-open their doors , research suggests drink-driving cases could soar. New research freveals nearly one in three (30%) UK drivers will be heading to the pub to celebrate the end of lockdown, with most (80%) planning to have a drink (or two). However, concerningly, a third (33%) of these motorists – equivalent to nearly five million (1) – are planning to get behind the wheel to go for a drink. Historically, summertime is a prolific time for drink-driving, with 2,861 motorists caught driving under the influence in July last year. That’s according to new FOI data (2) obtained by Confused. com. As people are expected to flock to pubs re-opening across the UK over the next few months, this summer could be on track to attract record numbers of drink-driving convictions, especially while public transport restrictions are still in place. Across the whole year, 41,011 drivers were caught driving under the influence in 2019. And from January to April this year, shockingly, more than 9000 motorists were caught drinkdriving. Despite the country entering full lockdown in mid-March, these figures are just shy of the 10,750 motorists caught during the same period in 2019. But this might come as no surprise, as research shows that one in twenty motorists (5%) think it’s acceptable to drive over the limit when the roads are quieter due to lockdown measures. With social distancing rules still in place, many revellers are surely wondering how to get home safely after drinking. In fact, almost a quarter of motorists (24%) have admitted to driving after a tipple, because they didn’t feel drunk. And as many of us start to use our cars more, for travel to work or non-essential shops, it can be confusing to know exactly when
we’re safe to get back behind the wheel. It appears that the lockdown has caused more of us to increase our drinking habits, as a quarter of people (25%) admit they are drinking more than usual under the circumstances. And some think risking their licence is worthwhile under the circumstances, as new research reveals nearly one in ten drivers (8%) have driven home over the limit. It seems that some drivers are willing to continue risking their safety when the roads start to get busier, as one in twenty (5%) motorists say they’d consider driving home after a few drinks, if social distancing stops them from getting a taxi or a lift. Further research shows that people are drinking without fully understanding how much they can have before driving. Almost a third (31%) of UK drivers are confused about the legal drink-driving limit. And according to the research, more than half (57%) would feel safe to drive after one or two drinks, while shockingly, almost a further one in twenty (4%) would consider driving after a third drink. While many people can’t wait for drinking establishments to fling their doors open once more, there are some concerns as a quarter of people (25%) fear that post lockdown will be a dangerous time for drink-driving. As we return to a new sense of ‘normal’, it’s likely that roads will get busier and police will be back out in force. So, it’s best not to get too complacent under lockdown measures by risking getting behind the wheel after a tipple. Even when social distancing, taxis are still running, so it’s always best to take the safe option after a few drinks. Because no doubt the police will catch those who might take the risk.

Take a Friend Fishing is back for 2020! The Angling Trust, Angling Trades Association and Environment Agency have teamed up to give all anglers the perfect opportunity to introduce someone they know to fishing this month with angling being the ideal activity following relaxation of some aspects of “lockdown”. Take a Friend Fishing (TAFF) is back for 2020. From 4th July to the 19th July (inclusive), fishing licence holding anglers will be able to register for a free one-day Environment Agency fishing licence worth £6 to take someone they know fishing. To take advantage of this offer, all that licence holding anglers need to do is to visit www. takeafriendfishing.co.uk and provide some simple contact details including their fishing licence number and the date of the fishing trip. This will notify their friend who, after checking their details are correct, will be able to go fishing with the fishing licence holder, on the selected day using their own free one-day fishing licence. To support Take a Friend Fishing the Angling Trust’s Get Fishing Team have created a list of fishing venues that are ideal to take someone during Take a Friend Fishing. They are the perfect places to take a newcomer or anybody who wants to get back into angling after a break from the sport - www.getfishing.org.uk/location Kevin Austin, Deputy Director for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment at the Environment Agency said ‘We are delighted to support the relaunch of the Take a Friend Fishing initiative. This is the ideal time for anglers to introduce someone new to our wonderful sport. By providing a free one-day licence to newcomers we hope many will discover the enjoyment of fishing for the first time and once hooked will
be inspired to go again and again. “Angling is a healthy activity which anyone can participate in and provides endless options for being outside in the environment, why not encourage a friend to give it a go?”
Clive Copeland, Head of the Participation at the Angling Trust commented “It’s brilliant to see so many people trying fishing, and the busy angling venues we have seen all over the country are testament to a massive rise in participation numbers. This is not only amongst tens of thousands of people trying fishing for the first time but also the many lapsed anglers who want to get back into angling with friends, family members and colleagues who recognise that this is the perfect time to take a friend fishing.”

Andrew Race, Chairman, Angling Trades Association (ATA) added “The ATA’s work with initiatives such as Take a Friend Fishing (TAFF) is long standing. Recruitment is vital to angling as a pastime and to the industry it supports. The opportunity to work collectively with other major stakeholders such as the Angling Trust represents a serious investment for the sport going forward. Recent events have focussed people’s minds on the importance of recreation both mentally and physically, and angling provides the ideal opportunity to achieve those goals and connect with the environment.” Angling can still be practiced safely and has seen a boom in participation numbers after being one of the first sports to return on 13th May after lockdown guidelines were relaxed. The Angling Trust - the national representative and governing body for angling in England regularly updates its guidelines to anglers, clubs, fisheries, coaches and other angling organisations to ensure fishing can comply with the latest Government guidance during the Covid-19 epidemic. Going fishing is a wonderful way to spend quality time with family and friends and has proven mental health and wellbeing benefits. “mcgoaldrick” ends drought capital display from the owls
It’s taken a while - 42 shots & 1615 minutes to be precise - but David McGoldrick finally netted his first(& second!) Premier League goals to add to his reputation as one of the Blades’ most creative influences as United destroyed a Chelsea side who had been in fine form prior to Saturday’s game. United made it back-to-back victories and stretched a Premier League unbeaten run to four games after a convincing 3-0 success against high-flying Chelsea. Inspired by a late win over Wolves on Wednesday night, United carried momentum into the contest and were good value for the three points after a David McGoldrick brace either side of a well-taken header from Oli McBurnie. The win moves the Blades into sixth with just three Premier League games remaining. Chris Wilder made one change to the side which beat Wolves in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night, recalling striker McGoldrick, who was fit-again after a recent foot injury, with Billy Sharp dropping to the bench. United came flying out of the blocks and put the visitors on the back foot from the off after winning an early corner, shortly afterwards George Baldock crashed into Christian Pulisic with a strong challenge and received a yellow card after just three minutes. The Blades maintained their high tempo start and on five minutes Ollie Norwood’s corner was only clawed away as far as Ben Osborn by Arrizabalaga, but the former Nottingham Forest midfielder blazed an effort well over. Chelsea threatened for the first time when Ross Barkley sailed in a dangerous centre which was headed wide by Pulisic under pressure from Baldock. The positive start for United was rewarded with the opening goal on 18 minutes. After good interplay between McBurnie and Osborn almost created an opening, the Blades kept the attack alive by working it wide to Baldock. The wingback stood up a perfect cross for McBurnie at the back post who struck the ball first time. His effort took a slight deflection off a Chelsea body which caught out Arrizabalaga who could only parry to McGOLDRICK who was on hand to convert from close range. Chelsea enjoyed a spell of possession but there was no way through a solid United who pressed their opponents throughout. It was United who looked more likely to score and it was no surprise when the Blades added a second. Enda Stevens worked himself into an excellent position down the left after a sublime one-two with Osborn. The Irishman then stood up a perfect cross for an unmarked McBURNIE to powerfully head beyond the stranded Arrizabalaga. It took 43 minutes for Chelsea to work Dean Henderson
for the first time when from almost nothing Reece James drilled in a powerful effort from 20 yards which the United ‘keeper parried clear with both hands. Chelsea upped the tempo at the start of the second-half, but despite an increased energy, the Blades rarely looked threatened by the Londoners. If anything it was United who looked more of a threat and when Chris Basham surged forward down the right his cross caused problems for James who had to put the ball over his own bar with Osborn ready to pounce. Chelsea mustered nothing in terms of clearcut chances with sub Marcos Alonso heading well wide and Ross Barkley crashing a free-kick into the United wall. After the introduction of Olivier Giroud, he almost created a chance out of nothing with his first touch as he struck a first time shot from a long punt upfield just wide of the near post. Inside the final 20 minutes, John Egan almost made it three in three games when he was close to converting Osborn’s low centre, whilst at the other end Jack O’Connell made a telling block to deflect a Cesar Azpilicueta effort wide. With 13 minutes remaining United sealed the points with a third. McGOLDRICK started the move with a run from deep before laying a pass into the channel for Mousset to chase. His low cross into the area was controlled by Antonio Rudiger straight into the path of McGoldrick who lashed the ball beyond Arrizabalaga for his second. United should have had a fourth before the end when McGoldrick picked the pocket of Jorginho before releasing Mousset but when clear on goal he dinked his effort just wide of the post. United comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to record yet another clean sheet and a valuable three points. ----------------------------------------------------------Meanwhile on a sour note, McGoldrick revealed that he, like Crystal Palace striker Wilfred Zaha, had been the subject of vile racist abuse on Twitter following the weekend’s matches. An arrest has already been made in Zaha’s case, and Sheffield United immediately issued a statement strongly condemning the abuse of McGoldrick and promising their full support to bring the culprit to justice. It was recently revealed that the Blades striker, along with Club Captain Billy Sharp, had been instrumental in Premier League players “Taking the Knee” before matches since the restart, setting an example in the game against Aston Villa which has been emulated before kick-off in every game since in a commendable show of solidarity by all players.

Wednesday turned in a dominant capital performance to beat QPR 3-0 at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium. Dominic Iorfa – whose father played for Rangers back in the 1990s – opened the scoring early on and the Owls never looked back. A second strike before the break seemed inevitable such was the one-sided nature of the contest and Josh Windass duly obliged. Substitute Jacob Murphy iced the cake late to wrap up a convincing victory for Garry Monk’s men. The Owls were off to the perfect start, striking first blood six minutes in. Joe Lumley parried a Windass free kick, ex-R’s man Massimo Luongo hit the post from the rebound and Iorfa was on hand to make it third time lucky. That gave Wednesday the perfect platform on which to build, with QPR struggling to make any kind of impact in the final third. The Owls showed much more poise and purpose going forward, as was evidenced on the half-hour mark when Alessio Da Cruz raced free down the right and Windass was a whisker away from connecting to the low cross. The next chance fell to Tom Lees, who was nicely placed in the area to receive a Barry Bannan set piece but the skipper’s header sailed over the bar. Still Wednesday pressed and they were rewarded just before the half time whistle. After Windass was denied by a last-ditch Osman Kakay block from close range, the Wigan loanee stooped to head home a wicked Da Cruz corner and Wednesday were squarely in the box seat going down the tunnel. QPR had more of a spark in the second period but the Owls could have been out of sight on 61 minutes. Jacob Murphy threaded a clever through-ball to the advancing Windass but Lumley was off his line to deal with the danger. But Wednesday were in no mood to step off the gas and put the game to bed with 12 minutes to go. Murphy took a feed from Bannan into his stride and looked up curl a delicious effort past Lumley in the top corner. It was no more than the Owls deserved and on another day the margin of victory would have been even greater. Garry Monk said the Owls’ 3-0 victory over QPR at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium was a performance to be proud of. “We needed to respond and we did today. It was a complete performance from start to finish. It was a response to the last few games where we’ve performed well but not got over the line. I said to the players that we know the quality
we have and how to work in that system. They focused and got their rewards for it. We scored three but we could have had more. And we kept a clean sheet which showed the concentration to the end. We’ve played well throughout games in this period and let ourselves down with focus, but today we had complete concentration and gave a more complete performance we can be proud of. As a team we played with great passion and heart, now we need to play like that consistently because today proves what we can do.” Monk also acknowledged the sad news of former Wednesday manager Jack Charlton’s passing after a performance the man himself would no doubt have been proud of. “Some of my early football memories are those of Jack Charlton. The things he did with the Republic or Ireland clearly stick in the memory. He was obviously the manager of Sheffield Wednesday too, and is held very much in high regard at this club. He’s a loss to the club, more importantly his family, friends and the football world. His family are in our thoughts.”
passing of a legend The world of football lost a legend on Saturday with the passing of World Cup Winner & former Owls manager Jack Charlton, at the age of 85. A family statement read: “Jack died peacefully on Friday, July 10 at the age of 85. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side. As well as a friend to many, he was a muchadored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary
life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life. He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people. His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories.”
