Business grants for city’s night time economy As part of the second round of the Coronavirus Business Grants Scheme, Sheffield City Council has now opened applications for larger independent business who operate in the City’s night time economy. Recognising how severely this sector has been hit by lock down and social distancing over the past four months the Council has listened to the representatives of the sector and broadened the eligibility criteria to help support these businesses that have missed out so far. The expanded scheme now includes provision of grants of £10,000 for those independent businesses such as restaurants, music venues, pubs and late opening

cafes. Applications for the Night Time Economy grants should be submitted no later than 10th August. In addition to this expansion, the criteria of the second round of the Business Grant Scheme has been updated to allow applications from businesses whose Rateable Value is between £15,000 and £25,000, irrespective the actual rental cost. The independent Night Time Economy criteria is as follows: • Independently run restaurants, Night clubs and music venues, public houses, cafes, cinemas, theatres, wine bars, casinos, bingo halls, food halls/courts • Properties with a Rateable value above £51,000 • Applicants must be trading,

the rate payer and occupying business • Businesses that are not eligible for other support schemes and is offered on the basis of one grant per business not per property • Businesses that are responsible for all the business costs and therefore excludes national chains and franchises Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “In meeting with representatives of our city’s night time economy in recent weeks and months the scale of the challenge they face has really come in to focus. Those that can now open have faced significant costs in

introducing social distancing measures and ways of working which have had real impact on their capacity to accommodate customers. We have appreciated the specific concerns they have raised and have therefore decided to ensure that part of the discretionary grant funding we have access to is made available to those businesses that bring our city centre and districts to life in the evenings. “Of course we would like to do more for these businesses and others across the city but we are unfortunately constrained by the limited funding from Government. I hope that this will go some way to help ensure our vibrant night time economy remains available for all to enjoy.

“Applications for this scheme are only open for two weeks, so I’m encouraging all businesses eligible for the grant to apply as soon as possible via the Sheffield City Council website.” “I would also want to remind all other businesses in the city to check the eligibility criteria for the Coronavirus Business Grants Scheme. Funding is still available to support eligible businesses but we are aware that Government will soon be expecting all schemes to be closed and we would not want any businesses to miss out just because of a late application.” Full details and how to apply can be found at www.sheffield.gov.uk/ nighttimeeconomy

Sheffield Fayre will not take place this summer Sheffield’s annual August bank holiday family fun day, Sheffield Fayre, has been cancelled. The free event, which is normally held at Norfolk Heritage Park, and was planned for Monday 31 August, will not go ahead due to covid-19 restrictions. Green-fingered growers from across the city usually flock to the event, which each year hosts the famous horticultural show. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said:

“It is with regret that we must cancel this year’s Sheffield Fayre. “In what would have been its 19th year, I know many will have been looking forward to our free bank holiday fun day, but as we’ve seen across the country, large scale events pose many risks and challenges. “As people can freely come in and out of the park without a controlled ticketing system, it would be impossible for us to put the required measures in place to safely hold the event. “We plan to be back next year though, bringing back everyone’s favourite attractions. And with so many people finding a passion for gardening and growing during lockdown, I’m sure the horticultural show will see lots of new talent when we return.” Throughout covid-19 restrictions Sheffield City Council has kept the city’s public events under review, working with partners to establish what can safely take place in line with Government guidance. For all the latest event updates follow Sheffield Events on Facebook.

three more local testing sites to open shortly radio sheffield Sheffield City Council is putting in place a very clear understanding of the situation reveals south in Sheffield with a plan in place to respond an additional three new local testing units to the changing picture promptly. The health to help prevent the spread of the virus in yorkshire anthem and safety of the city’s residents remains our the city. To make testing easier and more accessible they are putting the additional local testing units in local settings so they can support our communities to get tested for free. The aim is to make it easier for people to access a testing facility to prevent transmission of the virus in communities. If you have any of the following symptoms, you need to arrange a free test: • High temperature • New, continuous cough • Loss or change to your sense of smell or taste People should only take a test if they have symptoms of Covid-19. Tests can be arranged by calling 119, can be booked online or you can walk-in at the local test centre as you can attend without an appointment. The first unit will be based at Alderson Road Car Park in Sharrow, open from Wednesday 29 July between 2pm-5pm and Thursday 30 July between 10am-5pm. From Friday 31 July, the unit will be operating regular hours of 8am-8pm for a three month period, allowing people with symptoms to get tested. The next two planned local testing units will be installed in the areas of Darnall and Burngreave. More information will be released shortly on exact locations and dates of when these will be open to the public. Testing is a vital part in the fight against the spread of Covid-19. If you are showing symptoms, however mild, you need to get tested as soon as you can. Councillor Julie Dore, said: “Sheffield is determined to respond seriously to the continued Coronavirus crisis in our city. We welcome the arrival of a community testing hub and we encourage anyone with symptoms, however mild, to go and be tested for themselves and their loved ones.” Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, Greg Fell, said: “Firstly, I want to reassure people that we have

priority. Whilst we have seen a reduction in the number of cases we must remain vigilant and testing is one way of helping us contain any potential spread of the virus. But, in order to reduce the rate of people contracting the virus, we need your help. We know there are people with mild symptoms that do not get tested, so please, if you have symptoms, arrange for a test.” What to expect when you attend a local testing unit • The swab test takes less than a minute and is pain free and free of charge. • Results from tests taken at test sites are received the next day. • Testing is available for all groups in society, including vulnerable groups and people with disabilities. Anyone attending an appointment at a walkthrough testing site will be provided with guidance on getting to and from the test site safely. Book your test online at nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119. Whilst we are able to accommodate un-booked attendance, for reasons of ensuring swab availability and for safety of attendees, we strongly recommend pre-booking. Anyone testing positive for the virus in England will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace to help them track their contacts. This will help people to identify who they may have been in close contact with, protecting others from further transmission. Greg Fell added: “UK-wide, it is clear we are out of the first wave of the Coronavirus, but it is far from over. If you are feeling poorly or think you have symptoms, no matter how mild, you must stay at home and contact NHS test and trace to arrange a test. Our message is simple, COVID-19 has not gone away and we need our communities’ support in stopping the spread and to protect our loved ones.”

“I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor” by the Arctic Monkeys will be covered by an 80-piece BBC orchestra. Over the past week hundreds of nominations have flooded in to BBC Radio Sheffield to find the area’s “local anthem”. The final winner, picked by BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Toby Foster, will now be covered by the BBC Philharmonic, which has been playing and broadcasting concerts in the North for nearly 100 years. Formed in Sheffield in 2002, the Arctic Monkeys made history when their album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, became the fastest selling debut album in UK Chart history in 2006. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor was the first single from their debut album, and reached number 1 in the UK Single Charts in 2005, ranking number 7 on NME’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song was also performed by the band in the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics 2012. The 80-piece orchestra has just two weeks to adapt and perform the song, with each musician recording their part in their own home because of coronavirus restrictions. BBC Radio Sheffield breakfast presenter Toby Foster said: “The Arctic Monkeys created a buzz in Sheffield’s music scene, and became a national sensation. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor is one of the bands best known songs, and highlights some of the best musical talent our region has to offer. I can’t wait to hear the Philharmonics cover of a national favourite.” The song will be played on the breakfast show on August 7 and will then be added to the Great Northern Playlist on BBC Sounds, a mixtape made-up of one tune

No doubt it will be a challenge for our musicians, but hearing an Arctic Monkeys hit will be amazing. The BBC Philharmonic has been the orchestra of the North for nearly a century. It’s fantastic that we can continue serving communities here despite the coronavirus restrictions.” The Local Radio stations of the North that make up the Great Northern Playlist will be joining forces with Radio 2 as part of their Sunday Night Is Music Night show on August 16. make sure you don’t travel uninsured this summer baby charity benefits from local residents

The Government’s shock decision to collapse the Spanish ‘air bridge’ at the weekend has left aroaund two million holidaymakers at risk of not being covered for cancellation or curtailment claims, should the change in Foreign and Commonwealth (FCO) advice affect their trip. Many would have seen that the 14-day quarantine when returning from holiday has been re-imposed but also the FCO advice has changed. Mainland Spain is no longer a destination which travellers are advised to visit which means that any Brits who travel against the new guidance could risk invalidating their travel insurance. Rebecca Kingsley, brand manager of consumer awareness initiative travelinsuranceexplained.co.uk said: “The air bridge collapse has sent shockwaves throughout the travel sector. Many travellers rushed back to try and beat the midnight deadline on Saturday but others did not make it in time. They will need to go into quarantine when they return. However, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has also advised against all but essential travel abroad to mainland Spain. This is particularly crucial as travelling against FCO advice will

invalidate your travel insurance. Several travel insurers do offer medical cover for Coronavirus – but at the moment no-one is offering comprehensive curtailment or cancellation cover should things suddenly change at your destination. Travelling uninsured is extremely dangerous if something does happen and you need medical assistance. If your travel insurance is invalid you could face medical and assistance bills that could run into thousands of pounds. If you’re planning a holiday abroad, there will be many new rules to follow and you may not have the freedoms you are used to when enjoying your holiday. However, remember that no travel insurance policy will cover ‘loss of enjoyment’ of a holiday or to return home early if the holiday isn’t as expected.” Travel Insurance Explained has a comprehensive guide to everything coronavirus related at: www.travelinsuranceexplained.co.uk Travel Insurance Explained is a multimedia awareness campaign that has been created to be an impartial voice to help you understand travel insurance, so should you need to make a claim you will be delighted with the outcome.

Residents from a Sheffield retirement service have spent lockdown knitting clothes for a local baby charity. The residents’ knitting group at Sanctuary Retirement Living’s Roman Ridge, which offers apartments with onsite care, support and amenities for over-55s, have been busy knitting beautiful cardigans and jumpers for Baby Basics, a local volunteer-led charity. Baby Basics supports new mums and families who are struggling to meet the financial and practical burden of looking after a new baby, by providing muchneeded essentials such as clothes, toiletries and baby equipment. The Roman Ridge knitting group chose to support the charity because they wanted to do something positive for people in their community, especially given the hardship faced by an increasing number of people since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Janet Axelby, one of the Wellbeing and Inclusion Assistants at the retirement service said, “The residents have done an amazing job with knitting so many cardigans and jumpers for Baby Basics, they’ve been so generous. They normally meet up and knit together once a week, but due to lockdown,

many residents have been isolating in their apartments. Knitting for charity has been a great way for them to keep themselves occupied, whilst also doing something kind for a good cause.” Sanctuary Retirement Living provides independent living accommodation for older people in purpose-built developments, alongside personalised care packages for older people to live independently for longer.

We’ve waited nearly five months - but this Saturday sees the return of live music to many of the region’s smaller venues! Following a month of re-opening of pubs, clubs and bars, the next stage of the Govenment’s phased pathway comes into effect as live artists are once again permitted to perform in front of audiences.

LIVE MUSIC RETURNS Many of the venues have successfully introduced social distancing over the last few weeks as customers have returned, and of course these measures will be in place

along with further precautions before performers can take to the stage, but pilots have been taking place all over the country to ensure that the recommended measures provide a

safe and Covid-secure environment for both staff and customers alike. Volumes will be a little quieter, tables will be further from the stage, and dancing, for now, will not be allowed. In some

venues artists will be separated from the audience in “social zones” to prevent the risk of infection spreading. We have a number of venues advertising this week, although

we would ask readers to check the requirements for each event, as some clubs & pubs are imposing restrictions on who can attend, and may only be open to members.

Nevertheless many of our local artists & acts who have entertained the public for many years - as well as the venues - need your support in these difficult times as we look to return to the

the venues are going to great lengths to ensure your safety whilst enjoying the opportunity once again to hear live music!

Council announces three new Covid-19 local testing units Sheffield City Council is putting in place an additional three new local testing units to help prevent the spread of the virus in the city and our local communities. To make testing easier and more accessible we are putting the additional local testing units in local settings so we can support our communities to get tested for free. Our aim is to make it easier for people to access a testing facility, working in partnership with community organisations across the city so we can prevent transmission of the virus in our communities. If you have any of the following symptoms, you need to arrange a free test: • A high temperature • A new, continuous cough • A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste People should only take a test if they have symptoms of Covid-19. Tests can be arranged by calling 119, can be booked online here or you can walk-in at the local test centre as you can attend without an appointment. The first unit will be based at Alderson Road Car Park in Sharrow, open from Wednesday 29 July between 2pm5pm and Thursday 30 July between 10am-5pm. Testing is a vital part in our fight against the spread of Covid-19 in our city and to help reduce the rate of people contracting the virus, we need your help. If you are showing symptoms, however mild, you need to get tested as soon as you can.

www.brianwhitleycars.co.uk www.brianwhitleycars.com brianwhitleycarsales@gmail.com

07932 775415 of cases we must remain vigilant and testing is one way of helping us contain any potential spread of the virus. “But, in order to reduce the rate of people contracting the virus, we need your help. We are continuously improving the testing service so that testing is accessible to all. • Anyone attending an appointment at a walk-through testing site will be provided with guidance on getting to and from the test site safely. • Book your test online at nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119. Whilst we are able to accommodate un-booked attendance, for reasons of ensuring swab availability and for safety of attendees, we strongly recommend pre-booking. • Anyone testing positive for the virus in England will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace to help them track their contacts. This will help people to identify who they may have been in close contact with, protecting others from further transmission.

We can all do our bit to help prevent the spread of the virus by: • Staying at home if you have symptoms, even if they are mild (this is what makes the most difference). We know that 50% of people with symptoms don’t stay at home so this is the Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City biggest difference you can make. Council, said: • If you have symptoms, GET A TEST “Sheffield is determined to respond seriously to • If you are asked to isolate, it does mean you the continued Coronavirus crisis in our city. must stay at home. “We welcome the arrival of a community testing • Keep your distance, 2m where possible hub and we encourage anyone with symptoms, however mild, to go and be tested for themselves • Wash your hands with soap and hot water • Wear a face covering (if you can) when using and their loved ones.” public transport, entering shops and when you can’t keep a safe distance from others. Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, Greg Fell, said: The Council are working with local community “Firstly, I want to reassure people that we have groups to deliver the local testing site information a very clear understanding of the situation in and to support community testing in each area. Sheffield with a plan in place to respond to the changing picture promptly. The health and safety Together we can help keep our communities safe of the city’s residents remains our priority. “Whilst we have seen a reduction in the number by getting tested if we have symptoms.

Sheffield share in £1m Sport England legacy award for UEFA WEURO2022

Sport England has awarded £1m of National Lottery funding to England’s hosting of the UEFA European Women’s Championship in 2022 (WEURO2022) with a view to increasing the number of adult women playing football in England. In keeping with Sport England’s continued commitment to women’s and girls’ sport, the investment will support the development of local plans within the proposed EURO 22 host cities: London, Trafford, Manchester, Sheffield, Rotherham, Milton Keynes, Wigan & Leigh, Brighton & Hove and Southampton. Eight Host City Legacy Groups have been established with key partners from Football, Local Authorities, Active Partnerships, Education, Public Health and Culture coming together to work towards a common EURO 2022 Legacy Plan. These groups will be awarded approximately £100,000 to create a recreational women’s football offer in each of the nine host cities – currently being reconfirmed to deliver the tournament – so that when EURO 22 arrives the right opportunities and structures are in place to capitalise on anticipated interest. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is fantastic news for women’s football not only here in Sheffield, but across our nation. The UEFA Women’s EURO2022 will undoubtedly lift the women’s game, with some of the world’s best sportswomen and role models inspiring women and girls right here in our home stadiums. “In recent years the women’s game has grown in Sheffield and there are already many women and girls who are passionate about the sport. Through this funding we can turn that inspiration and passion in to real lasting legacy, and create opportunities to strengthen women’s grassroots football across South Yorkshire. We look forward to working with UEFA, The

FA, Sport England and our Legacy Group to maximise those opportunities within our communities.” The offer will include female activation in the regions to support new playing opportunities, with this being led by female ‘Playmakers’ following The FA’s new entry level course aimed at getting more volunteers into grassroots football in a safe and welcoming way. The investment will also pilot a new programme in each of the host cities to explore whether parents and carers attending The FA’s Wildcats sessions, aimed at girls aged 5-11, have a desire to take part in adult sessions that would run simultaneously alongside the Wildcats sessions. Sport England’s EURO 2022 project aims to capitalise on the proven impact of major events on grassroots interest in the game, with research undertaken during and after the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 revealing significant rises in women playing following the tournament. In the younger age brackets, 31.0% of girls aged 12–15 were regularly playing football after the 2019 Women’s World Cup compared to 26.0% before, with the pattern continuing in the 16 – 24 age bracket (35.0% after WWC compared to 27.8% prior) and the 25 – 34 age bracket (31.3% to 26.5%). Overall, 460,000 more women aged 25+ were playing football after the World Cup than before, the biggest increase of any age group. The UEFA Women’s EURO was initially due to be played in summer 2021, however following the COVID-19 pandemic the tournament was rescheduled and will now take place from 6-31 July 2022. Phil Smith, Sport England Director of Sport, said: “EURO 22 will be a significant and exciting event, and we are delighted to be working with The FA to use it to grow the women’s game. We believe a ‘place-based approach’ – working with local stakeholders to develop a recreational football programme for the right place, at the right time – can be instrumental in making this happen and ultimately developing women’s and girls’ football in England. “We know from data collected during the 2019 Women’s World Cup that there was a significant increase in the number of women playing football both during and after the tournament. “For EURO 22 Sport England and The FA are trying to get ahead of the game. We know the Tournament will excite the fans and the public, so we want to use that excitement to support even more women and girls to start playing.”

no happy ending to round off a fantastic season

owls announce new season kits Taking inspiration from on-trend modern visuals, the stylish home and away kits each feature a camo-effect design manufactured to the highest quality. The home shirt has a camouflage pattern running through the classic blue and white stripes. The black single button collar is coupled with a black cuff, black shorts and socks with blue turnover. The Owls’ away strip incorporates a grey pattern, with the shirt complemented by silver trims, cuffs and monochrome badge. The shorts are silver with a solid black pattern, black socks and silver turnover. The shirts are manufactured using ELEV8’s EVAPOR8 technology, a moisture management fabric that aids durability and all-round comfort. The SWFC crest is an embroidered patch alongside a new and improved flat silicone ELEV8 logo. Front of shirt branding for the 2020/21 season will be confirmed in due course and supporters should note that all new official replica shirts could carry the name of the respective sponsor. Finally, due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and limited stock holding expected, sales will be processed exclusively by online pre-order and this method of purchase is the only way to guarantee preferred sizes. Full pre-order details will be announced in due course.

IORFA WINS OWLS POTYA

United’s excellent first season back in the top-flight ended in disappointment with defeat on the final day at St Mary’s Stadium. Despite taking a first half lead, United on this occasion squandered a number of chances to put the result beyond doubt, and eventually tired legs took their toll on the Blades players as Southampton finished the stronger, running out 3-1 winners on the day. John Lundstram’s goal saw the Blades lead at the break, but three second-half goals without reply from the Saints saw them run out winners on the south-coast. For the final game of what has been a thrilling campaign, Wilder made four changes with Fleck, Lundstram, Jack Robinson and skipper Sharp all recalled to the starting XI. O’Connell and McGoldrick missed out with knocks, whilst Osborn and Norwood were amongst the substitutes. It was a quiet opening ten minutes or so with neither team able to get a foot hold in the game, but a misunderstanding between Vestergaard and Ward-Prowse presented an opportunity for McBurnie, only for Walker-Peters to make a crucial block. Moments later, on the break, Sharp got the better of Vestergaard and raced in on goal, but McCarthy saved his effort as the skipper elected to shoot rather than square to McBurnie. Following the drinks break, Southampton threatened twice in a matter of seconds, but United managed to snuff out the danger with blocks to deny Ings and then WardProwse. And on 26 minutes it was the Blades who took a deserved lead. Stevens found space on the left, his low cross evaded a number of bodies and fell for LUNDSTRAM who kept his composure to slide the ball under the body of McCarthy. Just after the half hour it was almost two. Walker-Peters surrendered possession on halfway and Sharp advanced down the left before crossing for Lundstram, who saw his well struck effort beaten away by McCarthy. The hosts then broke at pace and Robinson had to make a timely block to divert a shot from Ings wide of Henderson’s far post after Adams had got the better of Basham. The first half ended with United on the back foot, but a corner from Ward-Prowse was headed clear and that was the last action, meaning the Blades went into the break deservedly in the ascendency. The second period began with United on the front foot. Baldock and Lundstram combined on the right, before Fleck and Stevens did likewise

on the opposite flank, but on both occasions Stephens blocked shots from promising positions. But against the run of play it was the Saints who equalised on 50 minutes as ADAMS got in behind Egan and squeezed his shot past Henderson at the near post. On the hour, United through Sharp were presented with a golden opportunity to re-take the lead. McCarthy’s attempted ball out from the back was intercepted by the skipper but as he looked to round the Southampton stopper a retreating Romeu managed to make goal saving challenge. In United’s next attack, everyone of a Blades persuasion thought McCarthy had handled outside his box but referee Bankes thought otherwise. The game had really opened up since the restart and only an excellent last-ditch tackle from Robinson denied Adams from firing home a second after a clever dummy by Ings from Redmond’s header across the box. The drinks break prompted a second change in United’s attack with Clarke replacing Sharp, after Živković had earlier taken the place of McBurnie. But on 71 minutes the game did swing decisively in Southampton’s favour as ADAMS rifled home his second after reacting quickest to Basham’s block from a Walker-Peters shot from outside the penalty area. And with six minutes remaining, the home side made sure of the victory as INGS converted from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the build-up to a Redmond shot that Henderson saved. United tried for a way back into the contest, but despite four minutes of added time, a fantastic first season back in the Premier League ended in defeat. While the season as a whole far exceeded the expectations of all but the most optimistic of fans, it is a huge credit to Chris Wilder and his players that United fans were left to reflect on what might have been, had the season not been interrupted by the Covid pandemic. Cruelly robbed by the infamous failure of Hawkeye at Aston Villa, the suspicion held by many that the the rule change premitting the use of five subs would only benefit the bigger clubs proved to be true, as squad rotation allowed many bigger names - who started the post-lockdown campaign behind United in the league, were able to make the squad superiority count as the fixture schedule took its toll.

Owls defender Dominic Iorfa has been voted as the Player of the Year by supporters. The 25-year-old has been a standout performer in his first full season at Hillsborough. Iorfa joined Wednesday in January 2019 and marked his move to the club in dramatic fashion with a goal on his debut away at Rotherham in stoppage time, shortly after coming on from the bench. The former Wolves man began his Owls stint at right back but made his ambitions of switching into the centre clear from the off. Fast forward to the 2019/20 campaign and Iorfa has nailed down his spot in central defence, as highlighted by his 45 appearances across all competitions. Iorfa added a further two goals to his tally in 19/20 with strikes away at Middlesbrough and Queens Park Rangers, bringing his Wednesday total to five. Meanwhile the 2020/21 season has been confirmed as commencing on the weekend of 12 September. The campaign will end on 8/9 May 2021, with the play-offs reverting to their regular slot of the same month following this season’s disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fixture scheduling is underway and full details will be released in the coming weeks, by which time hopefully the Owls will have received news of a successful conclusion to the disciplinary proceedings currently under way.
