ARCTIC MONKEYS LAUNCH CROWDFUNDER TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR THE LEADMILL AND OTHER GRASSROOTS VENUES In conjunction with The Music Venue Trust and Crowdfunder, Arctic Monkeys are raising money for The Leadmill in Sheffield and other independent grassroots music venues in Sheffield and across the UK. During the early stages of their career, the band performed at numerous small music venues around the country and regularly played at The Leadmill. The impact of Covid-19 has been devastating for all music venues and particularly those independent venues who have provided a stage

for countless artists at the very start of their career. The Leadmill is a Sheffield venue that has played host to an incredible amount of talent over the past four decades including Pulp, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Muse, Oasis, Stone Roses, The White Stripes, Jorja Smith, Michael Kiwanuka as well as Arctic Monkeys. Since closing their doors back in March, The Leadmill rescheduled or cancelled over 120 events. With no clear opening date on the horizon, the future of this legendary Sheffield venue

and the dedicated staff who run it, is now uncertain. In an effort to raise critical funds to help support The Leadmill and numerous other grassroots music venues in the UK, Alex Turner has offered to raffle his black Fender Stratocaster guitar which he used for many of the band’s early performances including shows at The Leadmill and Reading Festival in 2006. Fans can enter the raffle via the band’s Crowdfunder page. Each entry is £5 and fans can enter as many times as they like. The raffle is open

to everyone worldwide over the age of 18 and will close at 6pm BST on the 25th August. The winner will be chosen at random and contacted via email to arrange delivery. Everyone who enters the draw will gain access to an exclusive viewing of the band’s performance at Reading Festival in 2006. Access to view the performance will be invite only and will air online at 8:00pm BST on the 26th August 2020 and will remain available for 24 hours. Everyone who enters the draw will be sent a link at

6pm BST on the 26th August via email. All funds raised will go to The Music Venue Trust to support The Leadmill and other independent grassroots UK music venues. Thank you for your support. Crowdfunder is waiving its platform fee to ensure every donation gets directly to the cause. You can donate and enter at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/ arctic-monkeys-leadmill

BE A SUCCESSFUL QUITTER IN 2020 Sarah* started smoking at the age of 23 following nights out with friends who were smokers. On average she was smoking 6-10 per day but decided to stop smoking to follow a more healthy life style. Sarah attended smoking cessation support at her local GP surgery, weekly appointments for 12 weeks meant that she had the professional support she needed, Sarah found this support excellent and very helpful and without it she doubts she would be where she is now, which is smoke free. Apart from using Nicotine Replacement Products Sarah found remaining positive was a major factor for her and helped her on a daily basis. Since stopping smoking Sarah feels far less breathless than she did and has noticed a drastic improvement and feels she now has a far better health, something she didn’t have when she was smoking. Since stopping

smoking Sarah has saved over £180 in a very short space of time and plans to treat herself with a new wardrobe full of clothes. Sarah would tell anyone thinking about stopping smoking to never touch them as they control you, you don’t control them. Yorkshire Smoke Free would like to advise that during this current time of uncertainty due to the Covid 19 virus, we are still offering smoking cessation support. Appointments continue to take place by way of telephone support. Please do not hesitate to contact the service on 0114 321649.

50 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH - WHEN SHEFFIELD BECAME CABARET KING OF ENGLAND The city had truly seen nothing like it when the doors of Club Fiesta opened for the first time in August 1970. Though the Arundel Gate cabaret club was renowned for its palatial décor and Las Vegas-style glitz, it was probably just as well known for a simple dish that has taken on almost legendary status thanks to the way it was served. Chicken-in-a-basket was the staple diet of audiences for the Fiesta’s decade long tenure - even though a far more sumptuous, á la carte menu was available in the venue’s upmarket restaurant. The venue was the biggest nightclub in the whole of Europe when it was unveiled. It was the place to be seen and attracted the biggest stars in the world. Opened by Teesside brothers Jim and Keith Lipthorpe five years after opening their original Fiesta in Stockton, near Middlesbrough, this venue truly changed the face of entertainment in the region. The brothers were inspired by their spell as semi-pro musicians in the 1950s and early 1960s and saw a big gap in the market for a more sophisticated brand of

entertainment in post-war Britain. Jobs at their £500,000, purpose-built entertainment Mecca in Sheffield became one of the most sought after positions in the city at the time. In fact the Fiesta was that sure of its pulling power it even held a date open for Elvis. The glitzy venue allowed audiences to get up close and personal with massive American stars like Stevie Wonder, the Beach Boys, the Jacksons and the Four Tops. Neil Anderson’s recently published ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Sheffield - the Fiesta Edition’ celebrates the legendary institution. The Sheffield author, who previously wrote ‘No Siesta ‘Til Club Fiesta’ about the history of the venue, said: “The Fiesta opened with massive fanfare and helped make household names of local stars like Marti Caine and Bobby Knutt that both headlined the venue. The Fiesta boasted tiered seating, waitress service, lamps on the table - no expense was spared at the glitzy venue. The Fiesta’s opulence was in keeping with the confidence in the city at the time.” One former member of staff said: “I absolutely loved working there. It was how I imagined London or Las Vegas to be at the time. “I saw so many acts perform. Tommy Cooper was always a big hit with the audiences. But he could be a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde character depending on whether he’d had

wildlife trust responds face coverings - the new rules you must follow

Sheffield City Council have published the long-awaited first stage of their new ‘Sheffield Plan’ which will guide how and where developments and infrastructure should take place across the Sheffield District (excluding the Peak District National Park) until 2038. The Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust have broadly welocmed the proposals but have called on the Council to go further by recognising the imapct on the environment. Dr Nicky Rivers says “We welcome the start of the new Sheffield Plan. Although many details are still to come, we look forward to engaging with the process. Our initial reaction is that we support many of the high level principles but we would like the plan to be more ambitious and to go further to make Sheffield a truly green and sustainable city at a European level. We welcome Sheffield City Council’s recognition of the climate emergency and its pledge for net zero carbon emissions by 2030, but we call on the Council to also recognise the current nature and ecological emergency, as the two crisis go hand in hand. For example, planning new habitat at different scales alongside and within developments can provide space for nature and reduce carbon emissions.” One of the main features of the new Sheffield Plan will be where to build new homes for the future. The Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust recognises the need for new homes in Sheffield and will be pushing for this to be done in a naturefriendly way. The Trust will also be looking at the consultation documents against its own set of high level principles to see whether the plan will include: • Space for nature, not only to protect the existing natural environment, but also new areas and networks for nature’s recovery. • Investment to enhance, expand and maintain natural green spaces. • High quality green infrastructure in all new development areas- including street trees, biodiverse landscaping and features for wildlife. • Ease and equality of access to nature for people. • Space for water and investment in natural flood management as part of planned infrastructure. The Sheffield State of Nature Report highlights the nature emergency locally. By identifying space for, and investing in high quality natural green spaces and networks, we can support much-needed nature recovery locally. And evidence shows that doing this provides numerous benefit for people including climate and flood regulation, improved air quality and improved physical and mental health, all adding up to quality places for people to live and work. These are all aims of the draft Local Plan and the links need to be made more explicit. The Council is asking those who live and work in Sheffield to respond to the consultation from 1st Sep to 13th Oct.

Face coverings are now required in more locations across England when new Government rules came in from 8th August. From 24th July it became mandatory  to wear a face covering  on all public transport and in shops, including supermarkets, in England. However under the new extended rules face coverings will need to be worn in additional indoor settings in the following types of locations: • Auction Houses • Bingo Halls • Cinemas • Theatres • Community Centres • Concert Halls • Funeral Directors • Indoor Entertainment Venues • Libraries and Public Reading Rooms • Massage Centres • Museums, Galleries, Aquariums, IndoorZoos or Visitor Farms, or Other Indoor Tourist, Heritage or Cultural Sites • Places of Worship • Premises Providing Professional, Legal or Financial Services • Public Areas in Hotels and Hostels • Social Clubs • Storage and Distribution Facilities • Tattoo and Piercing Parlours • Nail, Beauty, Hair Salons and Barbers • Veterinary Services The public will be required to wear a face covering in the above enclosed spaces where they can’t keep a safe distance (2 metres) from others. If you can wear a face covering but choose not to then you may be given a fine or refused entry/service. This does not apply if you have a legitimate reason not to wear a face covering or are exempt. However by wearing a face covering you may help protect those around you and slow the spread of the virus. Face coverings may help to stop the spread of the virus if you have COVID-19, especially if you don’t have any symptoms. Remember, if you do develop symptoms you should stay at home, selfisolate and book a test. Why wearing a face covering helps Face coverings may help by catching droplets that leave our mouths when we talk or cough. If we talk loudly, shout, sing, or exhale more during moderate exercise then we exhale more droplets. These droplets can contain the coronavirus. The face covering is designed to reduce the number of droplets that leave our mouths and can potentially land on other people. However staying 2m or more away is a much better measure as we know that most droplets will fall to the ground and not reach other people at these distances. When droplets land on surfaces and we touch surfaces and then touch our eyes, nose, mouth we can transfer the virus so handwashing or using hand gels is also very important. Some people have the virus, but no symptoms and some people are pre-symptomatic meaning they do not yet know they have the virus but are still infectious to others. Wearing a face covering may help reduce the chance of these people accidentally transmitting the virus. If you do have symptoms you must self-isolate and seek a test through the NHS.

Face coverings are not the same as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or medical face masks, those are used in very specific circumstances like health and care settings. A face covering means a reusable cloth covering – homemade or purchased – or disposable covering. Homemade or purchased covering should contain at least 3 layers of closely woven fabric of which the outer layer should be moisture resistant and the inner layer absorbent with the middle layer acting as a filter. There are some exceptions such as very young children, people who may find it difficult to breathe wearing a face covering, or people who due to disability are not able to comply. This also includes children under 3 years (there are certain exceptions based on age, for example, U11s  do not need to wear a face covering on public transport). Please note that young children should have adult supervision when wearing a face covering. It can be dangerous for children or adults who are unable to remove face coverings unassisted to wear a face covering, particularly if they have breathing difficulties, so please use other measures instead such as social distancing, catch it/ bin it/kill it for coughs and sneezes, and hand-washing. What to do if you are challenged if you are exempt from wearing your face covering If you are exempt from wearing a face covering please state your reason clearly and calmly. Individual places may have their own policies and may refuse you access if you do not comply with a request to wear a face covering. If you feel that they are being unreasonable or discriminatory – for example if you are unable to comply due to disability – please follow up with them through their complaints procedure. You do not have to explain to people – other than staff members – why you are not wearing a face covering. There are free exemption cards available through Travel South Yorkshire & Sheffield CCG but you do not need to show a card unless you want to.

advice for pupils receiving exam results

Are you expecting your results? Make sure you check with your school how to collect them. On Thursday 13th August and Thursday 20th August students across South Yorkshire will be receiving their A level and GCSE results. Due to exams being cancelled this year, students will be awarded grades based on an assessment from their teachers which has been moderated by the exam board. Results day would traditionally see gatherings of large groups of students at schools. However due to COVID 19 schools will be making different arrangements this year, for example they may ask students to collect results at staggered arrival times or share results using email or over the phone. Every school will have different arrangements so students must check with their school how to access their results. If students are going in to school

collect results please remember to

follow the guidelines and where you can: • Walk or cycle to school • Keep a safer 2 metre distance whenever you can • Wash your hands regularly or use 70%+ hand gel • Use face coverings (if able to do so) If you have symptoms, however mild you should not go to school to collect your results: Self -isolate and get a COVID-19 test immediately at NHS.uk/coronavirus or call 119. If the test is positive – to protect others, you must follow advice provided by NHS test & trace, household contacts should isolate for 14 days.

Good luck to all the students receiving their results!

Let The Music Play UK live music has been one of the UK’s biggest social, cultural, and economic successes of the past decade. But the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has meant the future for venues, concerts and festivals and the hundreds of thousands of people who work in them looks bleak. Like other countries such as Germany and Australia, we need the Government to help the music industry, which contributes £5.2 billion to the economy annually and sustains almost 200,000 jobs to ensure it remains world-leading following the damage caused by this pandemic.

www.ukmusic.org

Until these businesses can fully operate again, which is likely to be 2021 at the earliest, government support will be crucial to prevent mass insolvencies and the end of this world-leading industry.

• The core live music industry stands to lose at least £900 million if it remains closed for the rest of 2020.

On July 2nd 2020, UK Music and members of the UK Live Music Group, alongside a coalition of live music businesses including artists, venues, concerts, festivals, production companies and industry figures launched a campaign, Let The Music Play, to highlight the importance of the sector to the UK’s economy.

• The UK is home to the most popular arenas in the world, yet they are set to lose five million visitors due to COVID-19.

• An estimated 30-50% of the live music industry’s workforce are facing unemployment, leading to a catastrophic loss of skills.

• Music festivals support 85,000 jobs, but with the entire summer cancelled, many are currently facing collapse with 59% redundancies expected across the sector without further support.

Artists across the industry such as Ed Sheeran, Dua Lip and Paul McCartney have joined together to sign a letter to Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden calling for support.

• 90% of grassroots music venues are under threat of closure. We are supporting the Music Venue Trust’s call for a £50 million cash injection to ensure vital parts of the music industry do not go out of business.

Our three key asks of the Government are:

• The core live music industry generates £1.1 billion to the economy and impacts other parts of the economy including tourism to the tune of £4.5 billion.

1. A clear conditional timeline for reopening venues without social distancing 2. An immediate comprehensive business and employment support package* and access to finance. 3. Full VAT exemption on ticket sales. * The business and employment support package should include a Government-backed insurance scheme to allow shows to go ahead; an extension of the furlough scheme and help for the selfemployed and sole traders to prevent mass redundancies; rent breaks for venues to allow them to reopen; an extension of business rate relief to the entire live music supply chain to protect our ecosystem, large single event premises license fees for festivals to be rolled over to 2021 and financial support for lost box office income to support reopening and recovery, which would also support performers, songwriters, composers and their representatives.

How has the Government responded? Following the launch of the campaign, the Government announced a £1.57bn support package for the arts. The support packaged was widely welcomed by the music industry, however we still need to ensure that eligibility for grants and loans is as broad as possible to ensure maximum take-up from across the industry from those in desperate need of help. Also those that don’t have a track record of public funding must also not be put at a disadvantage and we are seeking urgent talks with Government to discuss further. As part of his summer statement Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a VAT cut from 20% to 5% for businesses in tourism and hospitality, which includes concerts and shows. The Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport also announced that there would be easing of restrictions to allow open-air performances to resume from Saturday in a very limited way. However, this is only the first stage on the long road to get live music back on its feet. It is more critical than ever that Govt ensures the scope of its support is broad enough and continues for long enough to help the tens of thousands in our industry who are still unable to return to work.

What can you do?

Please write to your local MP to support Let The Music Play. You can find your local MP at https://members.parliament.uk/FindYourMP Support the campaign on social media with #LetTheMusicPlay. Download assests at www.ukmusic.org/policy/let-the-music-play

• Musicians earn an average of £23,000 a year, well below the national average. Their income is under further threat due to the cancellation of live music because performances represent a major of income for musicians, composers and songwriters. • Live music needs VAT relief on future ticket sales. It would save the live music industry up to £300 million each year and hugely help in its recovery. • Music plays an important role to the economy. UK concert-goers spend almost double on live music events than those in France and Italy combined. • The UK live music industry is the second biggest in the world but is at risk of falling behind. Following COVID-19 the German government has provided €150 million to its live music industry. • The UK is host to the world’s biggest and most famous greenfield festival – Glastonbury and the world’s most successful ticketed venue – The O2. Every year almost 30 million music fans attend thousands of festivals, arenas, concert halls and grassroots venues. • Live music events have a profound impact on local economies – Glastonbury generates £100m a year for local businesses and charities. Ed Sheeran’s 2019 gigs at Chantry Park generated £9m for the Ipswich economy. • The Government’s Job Retention Scheme has provided short term relief to the many live music businesses and employees yet plans to wind down the scheme risk putting livelihoods at risk without further support. • If the UK Government does not provide timely and well-targeted support to the music sector, the industry will lose core physical infrastructure, as well as musical talent technical skills, which will be impossible to replace, even if the industry is able to return to economic viability post-Covid-19.

7 Top Tips to Take a Friend Fishing

Take a Friend Fishing runs from 14th August to 4th October 2020 – that means that during the extended period there are eight weekends that fishing licence holding anglers can encourage a mate to come fishing.. If you’re a fishing licence holding angler you can register for a free one-day Environment Agency fishing licence worth £6 to take someone you know fishing. To take advantage of this offer, all you need to do is to visit www. takeafriendfishing.co.uk. Here ares some simple tips to help get your friend fishing… • Keep things simple! You don’t want to spend hours of your trip tying up complicated rigs whilst your friend sits there waiting to have a go. Short poles/whips or a float flicked into the margins is a great way to start. Less time setting up = more time fishing. • Make sure you have a couple of spare disgorgers and forceps. There’s nothing worse than struggling with a difficultly hooked fish with someone who is new to fishing. • Think about where you’re fishing. Tree lined margins may look really fishy but can make it challenging for a new angler to learn how to cast. A bit of open space will mean you’ll spend much less time casting into trees! • Remember you’re there to give your friend the opportunity to go fishing, not to watch you fish! Let them take control and learn by doing it themselves.

• Barbless Hooks make life a lot easier. If the fishery allows, barbless hooks are strongly recommended. Not only will it be easier for the new angler to learn how to unhook fish but it’s much easier to take a barbless hook out of a jumper! • Remember to maintain social distancing. Although you’ll be outside, it’s important to maintain social distancing if you are fishing with someone outside your household or ‘social bubble’. Helping a new angler to fish for the first time can still be easily done whilst socially distant, just remember not to rush in too quickly with the landing net when they hook that monster! • Visit www.getfishing.org.uk/location for Get Fishing campaign’s “Beginner Friendly Fisheries” – they are the perfect place to take someone new to fishing.

The 28-year-old graduated from the Wednesday youth system and made his senior debut in a League Cup tie against Bury in August 2010 at Hillsborough. The Owls went on to advance in the competition with a 1-0 win over the Shakers, with Palmer playing over an hour of the clash at Hillsborough. Fast forward ten years and the defender has now made 258 senior appearances, over 300 in total when taking into account a season-long loan spell with Tranmere and is a full Scotland international. Ten years at one club is a rare phenomena in the modern game, as the boyhood Wednesdayites continues to live the dream of donning the blue and white shirt and stepping out at Hillsborough. Palmer said via his official Instagram account: “10th August 2010 v Bury League cup Hillsborough Stadium Just a kid from Worksop who never left the house without a ball at my feet, with dreams of maybe one day becoming a professional footballer. Fast forward 21 years after @swfcofficial academy came calling, never did I think I would still be walking through the gates at Middlewood road. I would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported me along the way so far. My wife, family, friends, backroom staff, coaches, managers, team mates and of course the fans.”

Lokilo: I was focused on a return to Doncaster Jason Lokilo says he always had his heart set on a return to Rovers after a brief loan spell at the club last season. The winger was just starting to break into the side when the season was suspended due to COVID-19, but despite having other options, the 21-year-old knew he wanted to come back to the Keepmoat Stadium. “I always wanted to come back to Doncaster and get back with the team,” he said. “I know the staff at Doncaster are very good and

the players are very good so I always wanted to come back. “I had a few options elsewhere but my head was focused on Doncaster and my decision was very clear and easy from the start. I’m just pleased to be back.” Having left Crystal Palace in the summer, Lokilo believes that joining Rovers will give him an opportunity to kick on with regular first-team football. “I want to try to score goals and get assists. I want to play a lot of games – I’m ready to start my career and kick on as much as I can,” he added. “I’m going to give everything and try to be the best I can be to help the team and the football club. “I can’t wait to pull the shirt on and show what I can do.”

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm that the relevant paperwork has been completed to tie up new deals for Lewis Price and Billy Jones, who have both agreed one-year extensions at AESSEAL New York Stadium. Millers boss Paul Warne had previously expressed his desire to keep the experienced duo at the club and now the formalities have been completed on the pair penning new agreements which will run until the end of the 2020/21 campaign, subject to EFL and FA ratification. Price is one of the current longest-serving players in Paul Warne’s side, having arrived following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday in 2016, while former Sunderland man Jones brought a wealth of experience to a relatively youthful side competing in the Sky Bet Championship ahead of the 2018/19 season. Whilst confident in their on-field abilities, Warne cited the qualities the pair bring around the training ground and in the dressing room as key factors in deciding to secure their futures for a further year. “It’s good news that they’ve both agreed to stay,” he beamed. “They both bring experience into the dressing room and they are the types of characters that we like here at Rotherham United. “Their experience rubs off on the younger players and we do have a young group here. I know that I can rely on them both if and when they are in the team. “They bring a lot to our culture which is massive for me and we need to make sure we do have a balanced group age-wise in terms of freshness and experience. “Both definitely have a part to play both on the pitch and in the dressing room and whilst we pride ourselves on bringing young players in and improving them, that wouldn’t be possible without the likes of Pricey and Billy passing on information to the younger lads that you only get from having the careers they’ve had.”
