City’s leisure venues set for reopening Public leisure facilities in Sheffield will start to welcome customers back through their doors as Sheffield City Council has approved a support package to enable the safe reopening of venues across the city. Popular centres including Concord, Hillsborough, EISS, Graves and Thorncliffe will be reopened by the 1 September. Due to coronavirus restrictions all public leisure facilities have been closed since March. After the Government relaxed some restrictions allowing gyms and fitness centres to reopen, Sheffield City Council has been working with its leisure partners to develop a safe, financially viable and accessible to all reopening plan.

Some centres, including swimming pools, will reopen with a phased approach, with limited activities available initially.

By 1 September activities will be available at: • Hillsborough Leisure Centre • Concord Sports Centre • Springs Leisure Centre • EISS (English Institute of Sport Sheffield) • Graves Health and Leisure Centre • Thorncliffe Leisure Centre • Wisewood Sports Centre With memberships frozen and no other source of income to support Sheffield’s public leisure facilities, Sheffield City Council has approved a support

package to both Sheffield City Trust and Places Leisure, responsible for the running and management of facilities. This includes up to £15m of investment in Sheffield City Trust and up to £1.6m to Places Leisure. This package of support will enable some leisure facilities to re-open in all parts of the city whilst the Council continues the work to develop a long term strategy for leisure provision in the city. Richard Cowley, Area Manager for Places Leisure, said: “We’re excited to announce that on 1 September Graves Health & Sports Centre, Thorncliffe Health & Leisure Centre, and Wisewood Sports Centre will be re-opening.

“As we prepare to do that, we are implementing lots of new measures to keep colleagues and customers safe. Changes will include lots of signage to ensure we all respect social distancing, reduced activity capacities, enhanced cleaning regimes, and hand sanitizing and cleaning stations. “All the information is on our website where customers will also need to pre-book sessions.

We cannot wait to welcome our colleagues and customers back.” Details of centre opening times and activities will be shared on the provider websites.

Countdown begins to 17th annual Art in the Gardens Paintings, sculptures, crafts, demonstrations and entertainment are set to fill the Botanical Gardens when the biggest outdoor art and crafts market in the North returns to Sheffield in less than three weeks’ time. 5 – 6 September 2020 2 sessions per day, 10:30am – 14:00pm and 14:00pm – 17:30pm. Sponsored by Graysons Solicitors, this year’s Art in the Gardens will see premier artists in the pavilions and marquees, sculpture on the lawns, the Open Art Exhibition, ‘Home and Gardens’ area and a host of professional artists and craft makers. Soak up the atmosphere in the beautiful landscaped gardens, meet the artists, enjoy some locally sourced food and drink and see some beautiful artwork. Art in the Gardens organisers are taking measures to ensure the event is Covid-safe for visitors, following Government guidance to ensure all the requirements are met. The event will take place over two timed sessions per day and tickets must be booked in advance. There will be a slightly reduced number of exhibitors due to spacing in some of the large marquees. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “It’s great that this event can go ahead, celebrating a wealth of artistic talent. Relevant measures are in place so that people can come and enjoy

this popular cultural experience, which is one of the largest outdoor art shows in the north. Art in the Gardens is a key event in the cultural calendar in Yorkshire, and it is testament to Sheffield’s reputation that it attracts such talented and creative artists to the city. “The Botanical Gardens is a beautiful setting and with stalls, demonstrations and of course a huge range of art of all kinds, Art in the Gardens offers a great day out for the whole family, so please come along and enjoy the day safely.” A wide range of Covid-19 measures will be in place at the event, please see https://sheffieldnewsroom.co.uk/news/ countdown-begins-to-17th-annual-art-in-the-gardens/ for a full ist. South Yorkshire MPs call on Government to provide more support for the music industry MPs from across South Yorkshire are backing calls from the Sheffield City Region Music Board to provide tailored and flexible financial support for the music industry, after a survey revealed that more than £1.2million in revenue was lost in the first two months of the coronavirus pandemic due to cancelled shows or events, with millions more expected as a total figure. The survey, conducted in partnership with the University of Sheffield, found that people working in the industry were facing issues with cash flow, overheads, cancelled work, and that uncertainty about the medium to long-term future was putting jobs at risk. “Music is an important part of South Yorkshire’s culture and economy – and it has suffered badly in the aftermath of this pandemic,” said Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region. “We’ve got to get the industry the help it needs to get through the crisis.” Penny Blackham, Chair of the SCR Music Board, has written to Secretary of State for the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Oliver Dowden MP along with Mayor Dan Jarvis and local MPs Louise Haigh, Stephanie Peacock, Gill Furniss, Paul Blomfield, Clive Betts and Sarah Champion. Together, they’re calling on Government to provide more tailored financial support for the music industry to help the thousands of musicians, managers, promoters, production staff, technicians and other people who work in the industry who are struggling during the crisis. Established in 2018 by Mayor Jarvis, the SCR Music Board represents artists, music venues, music hubs, representatives from festivals, local authorities and more in South Yorkshire. Working with UK Music, the Board champions music makers, music lovers and the music industry to support talent and grow the region’s cultural economy. Mayor Jarvis said: “I welcome the Government’s £1.57billion support package for the arts, but more is needed to fully support the music industry through

these uncertain and unprecedented times. “Whilst we have seen pubs, bars and restaurants open up, our music venues remain closed and the economic shockwave is being felt across the industry in South Yorkshire, where the industry was already being shortchanged by Government before the coronavirus hit. “In our region we receive just £18 of National Lottery Heritage Funding per person each year, compared to an average of £31 per head across England. Similarly, Arts Council England National Portfolio funding (2018/19-2021/22) for South Yorkshire organisations is significantly below the national average. “As the industry starts to look at what its future looks like, Government must ensure that robust and fair funding is in place for both the industry and the individuals who work around it, to ensure our music industry thrives in a post-covid world, rather than just struggling to survive.” Chair of the SCR Music Board Penny Blackham said: “Many have fallen through gaps of the Government’s Job Retention and Self-Employment Income Support Schemes, which is putting the fragile and beautifully effective eco-system of the music industry at risk. The Government’s £1.57 billion Arts and Culture package is not answering this problem for many thousands of people who earn their living from the music industry. “Our industry is a finely tuned machine and a one size fits all rescue package will not work. What helps a venue may not support a festival. A musician will face very different challenges to a music teacher. The support needed for a music-led community project will be different to that needed for an artist development programme. A flexible and sustained programme of funding is essential if the industry is to continue to contribute more than £92million to South Yorkshire’s economy each year. “’The Government needs to support individuals and organisations until the sector is fully up and running. support schemes will put even more jobs at risk. These schemes need to be expanded to incorporate more industry workers, not wound down when the sector is the last to be able to open up. “Music has the power to stimulate our recovery and be the soundtrack for economic and societal renewal; but we must make sure it is still there and functioning effectively in a post-Covid-19 world.” When surveyed in May, just 35% of respondents had received financial support from the Government and a quarter had been rejected for funding. Other concerns raised in the survey included the impact social distancing will have on the financial viability of events, increasing debt for venues and studios, being unable to access recording spaces and a reduction in the number of people engaging in musical education. UK Music Acting CEO Tom Kiehl said: “Whilst we are beginning to see some live events take place most venues, recording studios, music hubs and festivals are still unable to open. When they are, it could be months before tour managers and production crews

are back on the road, leaving thousands in the industry without an income. “Not only will this impact emerging artists but it’ll also mean promoters, technicians, bar staff, security, and countless other jobs that support live music will be under threat. Music contributes more than £92million to the economy in South Yorkshire alone, but if the Government do not provide more bespoke support for the industry, we may not have one left when we emerge from the coronavirus crisis.” To shine a light on the plight of the music industry during the coronavirus crisis the SCR Music Board has spoken to six people from across the region to find out more about their experiences during the pandemic. Sheffield musician Otis Mensah, Doncaster’s Bang Bang Romeo, venue owner Andy Cook, Emma Holling, who runs a festival in Barnsley, producer, musician and studio owner David Glover and podcast producer Kitty Turner will be sharing their stories on the SCR Music Board website at sheffieldcityregion. org.uk/scr-music-board-blog.

LIVE MUSIC RETURNS We’ve waited nearly five months (and suffered one false start) - but last Saturday saw the return of live music to many of the region’s smaller venues! Some of our venues managed to pull together shows last weekend with the very short notice the Government gave but this week many of the region’s pubs & clubs are bringing live music back to the stage. Two months after the re-opening of pubs, clubs and bars, the next stage of the Govenment’s phased pathway came into effect as live artists are now once again permitted to perform in front of audiences. Many of the venues

have successfully introduced social distancing over the last few weeks as customers have returned, and of course these measures will be in place along with further precautions before performers can take to the stage, but pilots have been taking place all over the country to ensure that the recommended measures provide a safe and Covid-secure environment for both staff and customers alike. Volumes will be a little quieter, tables will be further from the stage, and dancing, for now, will not be allowed. In some venues artists will be separated from the audience in “social zones” to prevent

the risk of infection spreading. We have a number of venues advertising this week, although we would ask readers to check the requirements for each event, as some clubs & pubs are imposing restrictions on who can attend, and may only be open to members. Nevertheless many of our local artists & acts who have entertained the public for many years - as well as the venues - need your support in these difficult times as we look to return to the “new normal” - and the venues are going to great lengths to ensure your safety whilst enjoying the opportunity once again to hear live music!

Rachel Raynor was one of the artists to perform last weekend as live music returned to the region’s venues

Take a Friend Fishing FREE this August Rod licence holding anglers can take a friend fishing for a day between 14th August – 4th October! The Environment Agency, Angling Trust and Angling Trades Association have extended Take a Friend Fishing and the 8 week campaign kicked-off last week on 14th August. Environment Agency rod fishing licence holding anglers – we encourage you to use this opportunity to introduce a friend, family member or colleague to all of the brilliant aspects our wonderful sport has to offer – all you need to do is register to take a friend fishing on one day throughout the eight-week period between 14th August and 4th October 2020. Sheffield United have had a bid for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale accepted by Bournemouth over the weekend. The Blades are hopeful of solving their goalkeeping position by bringing academy-grown Ramsdale back to Bramall Lane this summer following Bournemouth’s relegation down to the Championship. Ramsdale spent four years with the Blades between 2013 and 2017 before moving to the Vitality Stadium after making just two FA Cup appearances under Chris Wilder during the 201617 season. Last season, Ramsdale was the Cherries’ firstchoice goalkeeper, but was unable to keep them in the Premier League. In what was a season to forget under Eddie Howe, Ramsdale was one of the few bright sparks for the Cherries, earning high praise from Howe, who has since left the club. Ramsdale was named as the club’s player of the season last week by supporters. Last season’s campaign gave everyone connected with the club an insight into what life is like in football’s richest and best league. It’s a world far removed from anything they had experienced and it certainly whet the appetite for more. But, as United are finding out in the transfer market right now, it can also go against you. Nottingham Forest’s valuation of Matty Cash is a prime example of this. The club has put a £15million tag on their 23-yearold full-back after it was claimed they had rejected United’s £6million offer. When a Premier League team calls, it gives the signal for the target club to instantly add several million more on top of his true valuation. It is something United may not have experienced too much last season, being a newly promoted team, but after a top 10 finish and the riches that go with that position being well publicised, clubs instantly believe there is more money to be had from the deal. Given that Chris Wilder has spoken publicly about the money the club lost as a result of lockdown (believed to be in the region of £20 million) it may well be that clibs with players in demand may well have to lower their expoectations as the new season approaches, as the “money no object” culture of previous years may well not be seen in the coming months.

warne delighted owls to appeal with angus points penalty Rotherham United manager Paul Warne insists his latest summer recruit Angus MacDonald is ready to fight for his place in the side ahead of their 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship campaign. Warne has made it no secret he likes to meet his players before they put pen-to-paper and has selfconfessed to ‘trying to put players off ’ from signing by outlining the high standards he sets for his side, as well as the high-level of competition for places. He admitted he was looking to add competition amongst his defensive ranks as his defenders return to full fitness. However, he is adamant that the new recruit still has a fight on his hands to nail down a starting place. “I’m really pleased, it’s been bubbling away for a few weeks now. I spoke to him last week in our usual way, we tried to interrogate him a little bit to try and talk him out of it,” Warne said. “It was ideal, we knew where we were lacking in terms of strength of the squad, we’re pretty solid everywhere else but I do still want to improve it. MacDonald joins the Rotherham ranks with an array of Sky Bet Championship experience to his name having earned himself a money move to Hull City following a successful stint at South Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley between 2016 and 2018. His desire to play regular first team football for the Tigers was hampered by illness but having recovered from a blood clot and overcoming bowel cancer, Warne insists his new recruit now has the determination to take his Sky Bet Championship chance. Warne summed his new signing up - “He wanted to play in the Championship. He got offered a new deal at Hull after finishing the season in their first team. He’s an ideal addition for us, a really nice kid and he’s been through a lot.”

shirt auction raises nearly £5k

SUFC have confirmed that an impressive £4,583 has been pledged for mental health charity partners Heads Together, Mind and CALM following the auctioning of the unique match worn shirts from the Blades fixture against AFC Bournemouth in February. Bids for each of the 18 shirts worn by United’s matchday squad began at £100 and typically it was a real team effort to get to impressive final total. It was skipper Billy Sharp’s that went for the highest amount at £660, with Dean Henderson’s and Sander Berge’s drawing winning bids of £460 and £390 respectively.

Following publication of the written reasoning of the Disciplinary COmmission, the Owls have issued a clubstatement (below) in which they outline their intention to appeal the verdict. The Club was disappointed with some of the decisions of the Disciplinary Commission and respectfully disagrees with both the finding that it was in breach of the P&S rules for the 2017/18 season and the sanction of a 12-point deduction to be applied in the 2020/21 season. It is important to highlight that the Commission did not find that the sale of the stadium was itself prohibited by the P&S rules, nor that the Club acted anything other than in the utmost good faith with respect to that transaction. The Club had been assured by the EFL that the stadium sale could be included in its 2017/18 P&S returns and relied on those assurances. Having discussed the transaction with the EFL, the EFL having approved it and the Club’s auditors having signed off on it, the Club believed, and continues to believe, it was acting properly and in accordance with the rules. It is disappointing, in those circumstances, that the Commission went on to find the Club was nevertheless in breach of Charge 1. The Club is pleased that Charge 2, which alleged that the Club had deliberately concealed certain matters from the EFL, was dismissed and that it was accepted that the Club acted openly and honestly in its dealings with the EFL. The Club further notes the Disciplinary Commission’s findings that this was a serious allegation that is not to be made lightly and an opportunity should have been afforded to the individuals involved to explain their position before the charge was brought. The Club welcomes the Disciplinary Commission’s suggestion that the EFL should have exercised its power to investigate under Regulations 82.2/3/4 as being a fairer approach rather than to bring the allegations without further investigation. Despite the EFL’s “sanctioning guidelines” (which it is not accepted apply in this case) providing for any points deduction sanction to take effect in the year following the breach (which in the Club’s case would have been the 2018/19 season when it finished 24 points clear of the relegation zone) and other mitigating factors, the Commission imposed the maximum 12-point deduction for next season.

The EFL sought to have the sanction imposed in the 2019/20 season that has just concluded, which would have seen the Club relegated, in stark contrast to the position it adopted in the Derby County disciplinary proceedings where it was content for any sanction to be imposed next season because Derby would not be relegated. The Club is pleased the Commission rejected such an inconsistent approach to sanctioning by the EFL. Given the findings in respect of Charge 1 and the sanction imposed, the Club shall be appealing the Decision to an EFL League Arbitration Panel, both against the finding with respect to Charge 1 and the sanction. The Club believes its grounds of appeal to be strong. The Club will continue to take all appropriate steps to protect its interests, for the benefit of the Club and its supporters, and looks forward to the appeal being heard by the League Arbitration Panel at the earliest opportunity. While the Club does not set the timetable for the hearing of the appeal it considers it likely that it will take place in autumn 2020. The Club will make no further comment until the outcome of the appeal is known. Meanwhile the Owls have confirmed the deadline for 2019/20 Season Ticket rebates as Tuesday 1 September. Thousands of Wednesdayites have made their selection from a range of options available since games were played behind closed doors upon the season resumption following the COVID-19 pandemic. All Season Ticket holders have been contacted by email to ensure access to the full range of rebate options and a number are still to make their selection. To ensure the refund process can begin, the deadline has been set in place, after which any unclaimed sums will be designated as a donation to the club’s academy. Telephone support has been in place where possible to assist anyone not conversant with the online rebate system and the Ticket Office reopened earlier this month between 10.00am and 4.00pm Monday to Saturday. The process of actioning refunds will begin after 1 September in line with the 60-day period previously communicated. Supporters will be contacted individually by a member of the Ticket Office team. Those who opted for rebates in retail points have had their season cards uploaded with the relevant amount which can be redeemed in the Owls Megastore or at the Sheffield Wednesday Online Shop. Supporters who selected ticket vouchers will have their accounts credited accordingly when sales resume.
