Arctic Monkeys crowdfunder for Sheffield venue hits target A crowdfunding campaign from Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys to raise £100,000 for live music venues during the coronavirus pandemic has hit its target. Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner raffled off a guitar to help the Leadmill in his home city of Sheffield and other similar independent music venues. His black Fender Stratocaster guitar which he used for many of the band’s early performances including shows at The Leadmill and Reading Festival in 2006. The impact of Covid-19 has been devastating for all music venues and particularly those

independent venues who have provided a stage for countless artists at the very start of their careers. The Leadmill is a Sheffield venue that has played host to an incredible amount of talent over the past four decades including Pulp, Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Muse, Oasis, Stone Roses, The White Stripes, Jorja Smith, Michael Kiwanuka as well as Arctic Monkeys. Since closing their doors back in March, The Leadmill has had to work to reschedule or cancel over 120 events. With no clear opening date on the horizon, the future of this legendary Sheffield venue and the dedicated staff who run it, is

now uncertain. Arctic Monkeys formed in Sheffield in the early 2000s and went on to release breakout single I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor in 2005. The campaign has now surpassed its £100,000 target and at time of publication it stood at just over £125,000. The raffle has now closed but those who entered will gain access to an exclusive viewing of the band’s performance at Reading Festival in 2006. Access to view the performance will be invite only and will be shown at 8:00pm BST on Wednesday 26th August 2020 and will remain available for 24 hours.

Keep wide awake and Stay:Up for Roundabout BECOME a night owl, burn the midnight oil and make a make a difference with some nocturnal fundraising for South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout. An estimated 110,000 young people in the UK are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Some are facing serious danger on the streets – and many are too scared to sleep. Now Roundabout is asking supporters to give up the comfort of their beds for just one night to stay awake for 24 hours and raise funds to end youth homelessness across South Yorkshire. As the whole country emerges from lockdown, the Roundabout team are hoping their October 9 Stay:Up will prove a successful fundraising winner. “Whether you Stay:Up solo or as part of a team, the challenge is simple - you tackle your tiredness, fight the fatigue, banish bedtime and whatever you do, you don’t fall asleep!” said Roundabout Chief Executive Ben Keegan. You could cycle, walk, quiz, dance or paint until morning, just so long as you don’t succumb to sleep.

“However you choose to Stay:Up, your one night without sleep could help a homeless young person turn their life around forever.” There’s no registration fee for the Stay:Up challenge, just the request that everybody taking part should raise as much money as possible. And for everybody who signs up, there’s a downloadable fundraising guide filled with hints and tips on how to smash fundraising targets while staying safe and wide awake, with lots of activities to do throughout the night. “Coronavirus has hit all our fundraising plans for the next few months but the need to raise funds so we can continue to support vulnerable young adults does not diminish,” said Ben. “This is one very important way in which you can help raise money to empower young people and to end youth homelessness in Sheffield and South Yorkshire.” To sign up and Stay:Up visit https://www.roundabouthomeless.org/event/stayup/

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice #HomesAtTheHeart

Yorkshire Housing and South Yorkshire Housing Association have joined the UKwide #HomesAtTheHeart campaign, calling for investment in social housing. Last year, housing associations built more than a quarter of all homes in England. This added an estimated £2.4bn to the national economy and supported more than 43,500 jobs. #HomesAtTheHeart believes that homes should be at the heart of our recovery from the Coronavirus outbreak. From creating jobs and apprenticeships, to supporting people affected by homelessness, to creating homes and opportunities that empower people to live safely and independently, social housing plays an important role in ensuring that our economy and communities thrive. Over the last two years, South Yorkshire Housing Association has created over 300 new homes in Sheffield City Region. And, during lockdown, South Yorkshire Housing Association worked with over 3,000 individuals to stay safe, well and independent in its supported housing, extra-care homes, and services and support in people’s homes and communities. Yorkshire Housing plan to build 8,000 new homes by 2030 with a focus on homes for rent and low-cost ownership. They currently have building developments across Yorkshire, including a £55m development in Hodgsons Gate, Sherburn-in-Elmet which will deliver 270 new homes, a £13.5m development in West Park Grange, Leeds which will deliver 50 new homes by August 2020. Yorkshire Housing and South Yorkshire Housing Association have also joined with three other housing associations to create Forge New Homes – an innovative partnership aiming to increase the supply of affordable new homes across the Sheffield City Region. For the #HomesAtTheHeart campaign, housing associations across the country are sharing stories, data and information

to celebrate what they do. They are calling for Government investment and support to continue to provide affordable, high-quality homes for people to settle and live well in. By making sure that people have the homes they need, and creating more opportunities to grow our economy, social housing is vital in ensuring that Yorkshire, and our country, recovers from this crisis. Nick Atkin, chief executive, Yorkshire Housing said: “Yorkshire Housing fully supports the #HomesAtTheHeart campaign. With COVID19 having a huge impact on the economy and unemployment rising fast, the provision of social and affordable housing needs to be top of the agenda. It’s clear that the social housing sector offers ready-made and proven solutions for a government looking to build, build, build as part of generating an economic stimulus. This campaign highlights how housing associations can be major players in providing much-needed homes across the country, tackling the housing crisis whilst also helping to drive the economic recovery.” We are already working in partnerships with other Housing Associations to build much needed homes through our joint venture Forge New Homes.” Tony Stacey, chief executive South Yorkshire Housing Association, added: “We also use innovation to create new ways to empower people to live well; for example, we know our fantastic Housing First Rotherham project works, and learning from this service can be used to work with people affected by homelessness as we come out of lockdown. Our skills, knowledge and partnerships can create new ways of working – like our Forge New Homes joint venture, which we’re part of alongside Yorkshire Housing and three other housing associations. We’re using our knowledge, skills and resources to build more high-quality new homes in Sheffield City Region, and to use profits to build more local affordable housing. Investing in housing associations builds homes and communities where people can really settle and flourish.”

outdoor seating

Sheffield City Council is providing barriers to help separate pedestrians from café and bar customers, to create safe and secure outdoor seating areas in the city centre. The barriers will create space between people moving around the city centre and those visiting cafes, bars and restaurants. The barriers are brightly coloured in design to aid those with visual impairments. Utilising outdoor seating as much as possible has become an essential part of trading for many businesses following the Covid-19 lockdown and the brightly coloured barriers, which are part of the council’s Make Yourself at Home campaign, help to make sure that the seating areas are not a hazard. The scheme is funded through the Council’s share of £50m in additional Government funding to support the safe reopening of high streets and other commercial areas. The project uses funding from the European Regional Structural Funds to establish safe trading environments for businesses and customers. The barriers are available to businesses to manage on behalf of the Council and can be had free of charge, with a small refundable deposit. Requests for barriers can be made by contacting citycentre.management@ sheffield.gov.uk. The barriers compliment the Council’s recently launched Pavement Café scheme, which gives all businesses the opportunity to apply for a free temporary licence to make use of the space outside of their building for additional seating. This is not limited to the hospitality industry as it can also be used for other purposes such as a waiting area. Nearly 50 businesses have now applied to be part of the initiative, such as Sheffield Waterworks and Hygge Coffee Shop.

More than 50 local children with cerebral palsy and other motor disorders will be given help and support, thanks to a grant of £59,400 from Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons to the Paces Sheffield charity. Paces specialises in helping children with motor disorders from the point of diagnosis through to them attending school. They help the children develop key gross and fine motor skills that they will be able to use in everyday life such as moving from sitting to standing, going up and down steps, picking something up from the floor all with the aim of helping the children develop increased mobility and improving self-care skills. Providing outreach support to these children helps to enhance the child’s ability to develop self-help skills, such as eating/drinking and toilet training, therefore encouraging independence from an early age. Paces, which is a specialist centre, school and charity, also delivers an Adult Day programme and also an Adult Sessional Programme, where they support those living with the effects of a stroke, MS, Parkinson’s and brain injury. In these sessions, they re-teach the skills which have been lost due to their illness. The charity are currently supporting 78 families and the demand for their services

continues to grow. Over the last three years, they have had to turn away over 100 families who wish to use the school as they simply do not have the capacity. The grant from Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons will have a significant positive impact on improving their ability to help more people in need. The grant from Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons comes through the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF), which is funded by Freemasons, their families and friends, from across England and Wales. Head of Fundraising at Paces, Julie Booth said: “We’re very grateful to Yorkshire West Riding Freemasons for their generous grant. This wonderful donation will make a huge difference to the lives of the children and their families, helping them to reach their full potential.” David S Pratt, Provincial Grand Master of the Freemasons Province of Yorkshire West Riding, said: “I’m very pleased we’ve been able to help Paces with their hugely important work with children who require specialist help with key movement skills. What they learn with Paces helps them develop the vital self-help abilities they need to move into education.”

Singing is no more risky than talking finds new COVID-19 study Performing arts venues including clubs and pubs have been badly affected during the coronavirus pandemic with live musical performances cancelled for many months because singing was identified as a potential "higher risk" activity. New collaborative research has shown that singing does not produce very substantially more respiratory particles than when speaking at a similar volume. The findings, published on the pre-print server ChemRxiv, are crucial in providing COVID-19

guidance for live musical performances and the safe distancing of performers and audience. The research project, known as PERFORM (ParticulatE Respiratory Matter to InForm Guidance for the Safe Distancing of PerfOrmeRs in a COVID-19 PandeMic), was supported by Public Health England and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), and carried out by a collaborative team from Imperial College London, University of Bristol, Wexham Park Hospital, Lewisham and

Greenwich NHS Trust and Royal Brompton Hospital. This is the first study to look at the amounts of aerosols and droplets (up to 20 µm diameter) generated by a large group of 25 professional performers completing a range of exercises including breathing, speaking, coughing, and singing. The experiments included the same individuals singing and speaking ‘Happy Birthday’ between the decibel (dB) ranges of 50–60, 70-80 and 90-100 dB. Although a number of studies reported

online have attempted to examine the quantities of particulate matter expelled by performers, they have struggled to correctly quantify the aerosol and droplets because of the large number of ambient particles in the environment, making it impossible to identify which particles come from the performer and which are just already present in the space. Carrying out measurements in an orthopaedic operating theatre, an environment of “zero aerosol background”,

has allowed the team to unambiguously identify the aerosols produced from specific vocalisations. The researchers discovered that there is a steep rise in aerosol mass with increase in the loudness of the singing and speaking, rising by as much as a factor of 20-30. However, singing does not produce very substantially more aerosol than speaking at a similar volume. There were no significant differences in aerosol production between genders or among different genres (choral, musical theatre, opera, choral, jazz, gospel, rock and pop). Musical organisations could consider treating speaking and singing equally, with more attention focused on the volume at which the vocalisation occurs, the number of participants (source strength), the

type of room in which the activity occurs (i.e. air exchange rate) and the duration of the rehearsal and period over which performers are vocalising. Indeed, based on the differences observed between vocalisation and breathing and the likely difference in the number of performers and audience members in many venues, singers may not be responsible for the greatest production of aerosol during a performance and ways to ensure adequate ventilation in the venue may be more important than restricting a specific activity. These recommendations will add to the research that can move towards allowing live musical performances and the safe distancing of performers and the audience, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jonathan Reid, Director of ESPRC Centre for

Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science and Professor of Physical Chemistry in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol and a corresponding author on the paper, said: “The study has shown the transmission of viruses in small aerosol particles generated when someone sings or speaks are equally possible with both activities generating similar numbers of particles. “Our research has provided a rigorous scientific basis for COVID19 recommendations for arts venues to operate safely for both the performers and audience by ensuring that spaces are appropriately ventilated to reduce the risk of airborne transmission.” Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: "Singing and playing music are passions for many people who will welcome the

findings of this important study, which shows that there are no heightened risks associated with these activities. This means people can get back to performing, another important step showing we are Here for Culture through covid. "We have worked closely with medical experts throughout this crisis to develop our understanding of the virus, and our guidance is updated in light of these findings today." Declan Costello, a consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon specialising in voice disorders at Wexham Park Hospital, and corresponding author on the paper, added: “This research will give useful information to performers, venues and arts organisations about how they can reintroduce singing performances.”

upon entry, crowd control, contactless payment, ventilation systems, and frequent high intensity cleaning. The report also says that restricting overall capacity to 75% of legal building occupancy will “ensure distancing is possible throughout the venue”. Among other key findings of the report were that clubs and venues have more mitigation control measures than retail, most pubs, restaurants and illegal raves. It also found that the core market for clubs and venues are amongst the

lowest at risk. Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, commented: “We have now reached a critical point. In the absence of a clear reopening strategy from government, or the promise of financial support, huge numbers of businesses within our industry are facing financial collapse and thousands of job losses. The report we have launched today clearly shows that there is a case for the safe reopening of nighttime leisure venues, including nightclubs,

late night bars, live music venues and event spaces. Whilst many of these are large capacity venues, it is important to note that they already have many of the safety protocols in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. “We implore the government to give us the opportunity to reopen in a safe, riskassessed way. Doing so will protect thousands of jobs, contribute to the struggling UK economy and ensure our towns and cities remain economically healthy and culturally vibrant.”

New report outlines how nightclubs can reopen safely

The Night Time Industries Association has launched a new report, which presents the case for a science-based, riskassessed reopening of nightclubs and venues. The report is supported by the Institute of Occupational Medicine, and calls for a clear roadmap for how late night venues can safely reopen in the UK. The report highlights that the safe operation of these venues can be assured by implementing a number of measures, including: temperature checks and ID scans

ANGLERS URGED TO FISH SAFELY AFTER BAILIFFS RESCUE MAN TRAPPED UP TO HIS CHEST

Two Angling Trust volunteer bailiffs on the lookout for illegal activity at a river in Northampton rescued an elderly man stuck in mud and up to his chest in water. Area Co-ordinator Vanessa Warner and fellow volunteer bailiff Steve Allen had stumbled across a pair of trainers and a dog lead at the top of a steep bank when they heard a commotion in the thick reed beds below. Beating a path through the overgrown weeds and nettles, Vanessa and Steve peered over the reeds and were amazed to find the grey-haired chap unable to free himself from the riverbed and with water up to his chest. He told the pair he had been trying to free his nine-year-old dog who had become trapped in the reeds when he fell from the bank into the water. He had been in the water for about 30 minutes when the volunteer bailiffs found him and was feeling very cold. Vanessa and Steve kept the man calm as they lay down across the nettles to grab hold of his leather belt. After a few attempts they were able to free him sufficiently to enable him to scramble out of the water to the safety of the bank. With the man still worried about his dog, Vanessa and Steve then freed the tired, scared animal from the reeds further downstream. Concerned for the man’s welfare, Vanessa and Steve suggested they call an ambulance, but he declined saying he just wanted to get himself and his dog back home and promising to seek medical assistance later if needed. Vanessa, a recent recipient of an Angling Trust Volunteering Excellence Award, said: “Somebody must have been looking out for this man because no-one really goes down there. Being on a VBS patrol probably saved this man and his dog. He was so very tired and cold when we got him out.” Steve said: “If we hadn’t been there at that time, there could easily have been a totally different outcome as he was in a really difficult situation with no chance of getting out on his own and totally hidden from view.”

Vanessa and Steve had been patrolling the river after a local resident had told them they had seen “something odd happening” in a very rural area known locally as Mill Lane, a river that runs from nearby Pitsford reservoir and through Northampton before joining the River Nene. Mill Lane is a remote area that has very few visitors with the steep banks very overgrown. Despite this, both Vanessa and Steve were able to locate illegal crayfish traps and set lines along one of the banks, tied to electrical wiring, nylon washing lines and old ropes hidden by undergrowth. None of the eight traps they found had otter guards attached but one contained a small pike which was safely returned to the water. It was while continuing their search on the opposite bank they stumbled across the man and his dog. The Voluntary Bailiff Service is part of the Angling Trust’s Fisheries Enforcement Support Service and is funded from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Environment Agency. Paul Thomas, Angling Trust Regional Enforcement Manager for the East of England, said: “This sort of action by our valued volunteers serves to further prove just how much of an asset to the rural community our Voluntary Bailiff Service actually is. People think that we deal only with fishing related matters but, as demonstrated by Vanessa and Steve, being the rural community’s eyes and ears along our watercourses means that our volunteers are able and willing to react to a wide range of situations. “On this occasion, Vanessa and Steve have disrupted serious illegal activity and saved someone’s life. I commend them for their awareness and have no doubt that their prompt actions saved the lives of both the gentleman and his dog that day.” Karen Hinson, Angling Trust’s National Volunteers Manager, added: “Well done to Vanessa and Steve for their heroic action that day, another example in a growing number where our volunteers have potentially gone above and beyond to help others. Whilst I am extremely pleased that everyone involved came away relatively unscathed from this incident, I think it also serves as a reminder of how hazardous our waterways can be even at this time of year and the caution that is required particularly when alone.”

Blades invest in BLADES rained Izzy Brown off AT DUNDEE completes Owls defender Egan loan move United’s friendly against Dundee United at Tannadice Park was abandoned at half-time because of a waterlogged pitch and high winds on the Scottish coast. The Blades had played the elements well in an impressive first-half showing with skipper Billy Sharp scoring just before the abandonment was confirmed, having struck the post with an early penalty, with Sander Berge involved in both incidents. Goalkeeper Ramsdale started between the sticks against Micky Mellon’s Terrors, making his first Blades appearances since December 2016. A number of senior players also featured from the off, but the bench was predominantly made up of players from the development squad. The inclement weather had already made the pitch heavy, but unsurprisingly the Blades were on the front foot from the first whistle. And on five minutes Berge surged menacingly into the penalty area only for his progress to be halted by a retreating defender. The referee pointed instantly to the spot, but from twelve yards Sharp hit the post, having sent Deniz the wrong way. United, largely through their impressive Norwegian midfielder continued to attack, but Deniz managed to save Berge’s shot with his legs, before Sharp headed wide at the back post from Slater’s inviting cross from the right. Norwood’s delivery from set-pieces were typically on the money, but having got the run on his marker, Callum Robinson couldn’t direct his near post header on target from a free-kick. The Blades weren’t unduly troubled defensively, but Egan and Jack Robinson had to be alert and brave to block a shot, which instantly allowed the visitors to counter and win a corner at the other end. And on 42 minutes, United deservedly got the goal their dominance had warranted. Berge picked the ball up in a dangerous position, this time he elected to shoot, Deniz could only parry and the ball fell kindly for SHARP to tap home into the empty net from close range. But, that was the last action of note, before the referee consulted with Wilder and his Dundee United counterpart at half-time and deemed the conditions were unfit to continue.

The Owls have secured the signature of Chelsea midfielder Izzy Brown on a seasonlong loan deal. The highly-rated 23-year-old bolsters Wednesday’s attacking options and becomes our third signing of the summer. Brown, who kicked off his career with West Brom where he became the second-youngest Premier League player in history, aged just 16, has all the right credentials to make a significant impact at Hillsborough. The versatile forward was part of the Huddersfield side that secured promotion to the Premier League in 2017 following productive stints with Netherlands side Vitesse Arnhem and Rotherham on these shores. Brown then switched to Brighton and Leeds before playing a key role for Luton last season, proving a big success at Kenilworth Road as he produced more assists per minute than any other player in the Championship. The Peterborough product was elevated into the first team set-up at Chelsea by Jose Mourinho and also rose through the England youth ranks on the international stage at Under-16 level through to the Under-20s. Brown follows Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Chey Dunkley into the Hillsborough doors ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Popular defender John Egan has committed his long-term future to the Blades, penning an improved contract that will run until the summer of 2024. The Republic of Ireland international, who featured 42 times for club and country last season, has signed a new four-year-deal after an impressive first season in the Premier League. Egan said: “The last two years have probably been the most successful of my career and to get the chance to sign a new contract here is brilliant for me and I’m really looking forward to the future. I need to thank everyone involved. “I’ve loved my time here. We won promotion in the first year and had a real good first season back in the Premier League, so now it is about building on that and improving in the future.” Signed from Brentford in the summer of 2018 for a then record fee, the 27-year-old

has been instrumental to United’s continued success, helping the Blades win promotion from the Championship in his first full season as a Blade, before playing a key role in helping the club secure a ninth place finish in the top-flight. Boss Chris Wilder added: “It’s a reward for the influence John has on the team and at the football club. He’s been part and parcel of our climb over the last two years and he’s taken his game to the next level. “He’s a rock-solid character who produces performances week in, week out against world-class players and on the international stage I know how much he loves playing for his country and he’ll take his career on to the next step there as well. “We’ve got to reward and secure our best players and John is certainly one of those, we have to thank the Board for their support in allowing us to put this deal together. “John has been outstanding and knowing the boy as we do, we know John is not a comfortable footballer, he wants to establish himself and continue to improve at the highest level.”

Rovers complete Taylor Richards deal
