STAFF ‘FACE MISERY AND HARDSHIP’ AS SHEFFIELD CITY TRUST PLAN TO AXE MORE JOBS SAYS UNION Union says lowest-paid staff shoulder the biggest burden of ‘unfair’ proposals after 79 redundancies at Sheffield Arena and Sheffield City Hall. GMB union says a further 200 jobs are at risk at Sheffield City Trust under unfair proposals which have already seen 79 redundancy formal notices issued in the city. Redundancy notices have already been issued across the Trust - including 38 at Sheffield Arena and 41 at Sheffield City Hall. Further plans see more than 200 jobs at risk at sports and leisure venues including PondsForge, IceSheffield and leisure centres across the city.
The news comes despite Sheffield City Council had just last month made a £15m subsidy available to Sheffield City Trust. GMB said it was unfair that the lowest-paid staff were being targeted for redundancy. Only one senior Head of Service post has been subject to “at risk” status. Those staff put on notice would be potentially put at a disadvantage for any potential redeployment across the business after the option to consult with unions across all affected workplaces was not taken up by the Trust, the union warned, adding to calls to extend the consultation period.
Sheffield City Trust had informed GMB that they do not have any money in reserves, despite Sheffield City Council making a £15m subsidy available to the Trust just last month. GMB will now campaign along with Sheffield Trades Council and community groups to protect jobs and ensure that the venues open safely for the public to use. Lee Parkinson, GMB Organiser said: “The business model used by Sheffield City Trust has failed our members and the residents of Sheffield. “The Trust’s unfair proposals have targeted the lowest
paid - and they have failed to prioritise minimising job losses or protecting services in their consultation. Dedicated staff face misery and hardship as jobs are ripped away. “It is now time to bring leisure
and entertainment services back under Sheffield City Council control. This is the only way to protect jobs and secure access to services for local residents.”

Plans submitted for prestigious Radisson Blu hotel in Sheffield A planning application for the latest round of Heart of the City II proposals were submitted last week, which if approved would see a landmark Radisson Blu hotel open on Pinstone Street. The highly regarded international hotel brand, renowned for its impressive style and excellent customer service, would occupy a prominent location overlooking the Peace Gardens. Designed to enhance Sheffield’s offer as a business and leisure destination, it is anticipated that the addition of a stylish new hotel will help to attract further investment to the city centre. The plans form the most recent phase of the Heart of the City II redevelopment programme, a scheme which is expected to drive Sheffield’s postcoronavirus recovery. The 154-bedroom hotel
would be housed behind the Victorian façades of Palatine Chambers and City Mews on Pinstone Street, complete with a sympathetic roof extension. A separate complementary building would incorporate most of the hotel rooms, with secondary lobby access from Burgess Street. Included within the development would be high-quality conferencing facilities, befitting retail and food and beverage units on the ground floor, and the eagerly anticipated rooftop terrace and bar — bringing a new dynamic to the city centre’s social scene. Sitting between the two core hotel blocks will be a courtyard designed as an enticing social space with seats and atmospheric lighting. Local architects HLM designed the proposals, aiming to celebrate Sheffield’s built heritage through a modern
reinterpretation of the city’s Victorian architecture. Artistic impression of the Radisson Blu hotel view from Fargate. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, commented: “We’re delighted to announce that an application has now been submitted for our plans to add a four star+ hotel and rooftop bar to Sheffield city centre. This step marks yet another significant milestone as we continue our progress towards transforming Sheffield’s heart of the city. “We’ve reached this point in the process after a recent public consultation — throughout which we received a great deal of valuable feedback from local people and stakeholder groups. “The comments and perspectives shared during
the consultation have helped us to successfully shape our proposals and I would like to personally thank everyone who has participated in the process.” A point frequently raised by members of the public related to the retention and reuse of the frieze previously located on Barkers Pool House. As expressed by local people, public art murals such as William Mitchell’s frieze contribute significantly to Sheffield’s sense of identity and place. In response to this, the Council has safely removed the mural and it has been placed in secure storage for the time being. They have committed to reinstating the artwork within a public space in the Heart of the City II scheme so it can continue to be enjoyed by both local residents and city centre visitors.

ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN TO KICK OFF 40TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR AT SHEFFIELD CITY HALL
May, will celebrate the songs that have brought the group twenty top 20 hits and nine top 20 albums so far during their incredible 40-year career. The band’s seminal albums ‘Crocodiles’, ‘Heaven Up Here’, ‘Porcupine’ and ‘Ocean Rain’ have been a major influence for acts such as Coldplay, The Killers and The Flaming Lips, whilst later albums ‘Evergreen’ and ‘What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?’ and ‘Siberia & Meteorites’ demonstrate what an amazing body of work the band have.
The Bunnymen are still revered in popular culture with the highly acclaimed and culturally phenomenal Netflix series ‘Stranger Things’, using their song ‘Nocturnal Me’ whilst the equally comparable ‘13 Reasons Why’ has used ‘The Killing Moon’, a song also used on another Netflix show, ‘Dead of Summer’. Tickets are on sale now and available from www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

A second local testing unit will soon be opening in Darnall to help prevent the spread of Covid19 across the city and within our communities. This follows on from the opening of the first unit in Sharrow last month. The location of a third unit in Burngreave will be announced shortly. Based at Station Road Car Park in Darnall, the new unit will be open from Thursday 3 September between 2pm-5pm and Friday 4 September between 10am-5pm. From Saturday 5 September, operating hours will be between 8am-8pm for a three month period, allowing people with symptoms to get tested. The local testing centre based in Sharrow, set up 29 July, has received an average of 115 visitors per day thanks to the fantastic support from local organisations who have been working tirelessly together with our Community Response Teams in the area. In making testing easier and more accessible, we can better support our communities to get tested for free. Working in partnership with community organisations across the city, our aim is to prevent transmission of the virus in our communities. If you have any of the following symptoms, you need to arrange a free test: • A high temperature • A new, continuous cough • A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste People should only take a test if they have symptoms of Covid-19. Tests can be arranged by calling 119, can be booked online here nhs.uk/ coronavirus or you can walk-in at the local test centre without an appointment. Testing is a vital part in our fight against the spread of Covid-19 in our city and to help reduce the rate of people contracting the virus, we need your help. If you are showing symptoms, however mild, you need to get tested as soon as you can.

part of a new scheme launched this week. Are you involved with a charity which could benefit from this? Thousands of groups and charities across Yorkshire which support younger people will be able to apply for funding provided by the Bags of Help scheme throughout October, November and December. Potential organisations who can apply include those supporting mental health, outdoor activities, educational activities, young carers, bereavement counselling, child poverty and vulnerable at-risk children. Since COVID19, the Bags of Help COVID19 Communities Fund has given £4m of support to more than 8,000 charities and groups across the regions affected by the pandemic, each receiving £500 grants for food, resources, and emergency aid. David Ford, Tesco’s Local Communications Manager for the North, said: “Young people have been among those most impacted by the pandemic, with schools closing across the country and many missing out on all important services impacted by lockdown. We’re encouraging any group who is working to
make a real difference to lives of so many around the country.“ The Bags of Help programme, which is run in partnership with community charity Groundwork, has already provided £83m of funding to more than 34,000 community projects across the UK. The £4,000 support the group received through Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme, has helped to provide dozens of mentoring sessions with seven young girls in the area, to help them overcome anxieties such as leaving home and bullying. Naomi Stanhope, Golddigger Trust’s Girls Project Worker and Events Coordinator, said; ‘With this funding we have been able to offer 39 mentoring sessions with seven different young girls. As a result of the programme’s funding, each of these girls have demonstrated growth in moving forward from the issues they were struggling with. One of these young people came to us

THE Bear Hunt may have been postponed…but there’s still a big family adventure to enjoy at Crystal Peaks! The award winning Sheffield shopping centre had been planning to take part in Bears of Sheffield, the Children’s Hospital Charity’s follow up to its hugely popular Herd of Sheffield elephant trail.
But with that event postponed until 2021 by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Crystal Peaks team have come up with a fun alternative attraction - their very own dinosaur trail! For a suggested donation of £1 - which will go to the Children’s Hospital Charity - visitors will be able to pick up a trail map from the Crystal Peaks customer service desk and set off on a dinosaur hunt around the centre. And for everybody who successfully completes the trail there will be a special prize. “We know how disappointed everybody was that the Bears of Sheffield were not able to come to Crystal Peaks this year and so we decided to create something that would support this much-loved Sheffield charity and also give young visitors an exciting fun challenge during the summer holiday,” said centre manager Lee Greenwood. “The trail will continue through to September so there’s plenty of time to come along and see if you can spot all our dinosaurs.”

DCMS reduces social distancing requirement for singers in light of study A recent study suggested that singing was no more risky than talking at the same volume. Government guidance has been updated to allow singers to be closer together in light of a study that found singing carried no more risk than talking in the transmission of Covid19. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has amended the previous three-metre social distancing rule. It now states that twometre social distancing is encouraged for singers and wind and brass musicians wherever possible. Where this is not possible, performers can continue
with ‘one-metre-plus’ mitigations to limit the risk of transmission, which include using backto-back or side-to-side positioning and regular Covid-19 testing. Previously, singers were required to observe extended social distancing of three metres, whereas nonsinging performers could be two metres apart. A statement from the Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre said: “We welcome the very significant findings from these recent scientific studies – they enable all activities to take place under the same risk-controlled conditions, and in particular mean that
singing no longer has special restrictions on it.” This guidance does not affect the distancing requirements for audiences, which is currently two metres between households or support bubbles. The update to the singing guidelines follows the preliminary findings of a study, supported by DCMS, which looked at the amount of aerosols and droplets generated by a group of 25 professional performers when they were singing and speaking. Researchers found there was a steep rise in the number of droplets expelled with an increase in volume, but that singing “does not produce
very substantially more aerosol” than speaking at a similar volume. Culture secretary Oliver Dowden said: “Singing and playing music are passions for many people who will welcome the findings of this important study, which shows that there are no heightened risks associated with these activities. “This means people can get back to performing, another important step showing we are here for culture through Covid-19. “We have worked closely with medical experts throughout this crisis to develop our understanding of the virus, and our guidance is updated in light of these findings.”
to celebrating retro nightlife via my www. dirtystopouts.com operation.” West Street’s Limit venue was pivotal to the city’s electro chart dominance of the early eighties and helped nurture various local bands that went onto massive success. Sheffield artists like the Human League, ABC (who performed under their earlier Vice Versa moniker), Cabaret Voltaire and Comsat Angels all played some of their earliest gigs at the venue. The Limit booked U2
when few other venues would entertain them - 14 punters turned up - and the venue staged the UK debut of the B-52’s. The venue originally opened in 1978 with Siouxsie and the Banshees being the first national live act to perform. The Limit also hosted the one and only time that city-born rock giants Def Leppard supported Sheffield’s own Human League - it was part of a local band festival in the very early days of the venue.
‘Clubs are going above and Local author is set to ‘Take It To The Limit’… again beyond to keep members safe’
Pictures and stories relating to one of Sheffield’s most iconic clubs are being sought as a local author counts down to the relaunch of a book “that changed everything”. Neil Anderson started work on a fully updated version of his ‘Take It To The Limit’ book - his best-selling title that documented the life of the iconic West Street venue - in 2019 but a personal tragedy meant the project was mothballed. The fully updated and re-packaged book is now set to be released
in the autumn and he’s on the lookout for photos and stories relating to the venue. He said: “My world stopped turning in 2018/2019 and the 10th anniversary Limit book was one of many projects that was put on hold. But the amazing reaction the original book received when it was first published in 2009 has always stayed with me. In many respects it changed everything for me. It gave me the confidence to launch and grow an entire company dedicated
CIU General Secretary Kenneth D Green CMD ACM has hailed the huge efforts made by clubs to keep their members safe since they were allowed to reopen. “It’s clear that CIU clubs have worked extremely hard to ensure that they are fully compliant with the COVID-secure guidelines since the reopening of English clubs in July and Welsh clubs in August,” he said.
“As our recent survey showed, many clubs turned the negative of the shutdown into a positive, using those months to make major improvements to their facilities and put in place the key measures that would be required post-lockdown. “That includes creating new furniture layouts and one-way walkways, as well as instituting protocols to capture members’ details for the NHS Test & Trace
system. “In many instances, our clubs are going above and beyond the guidelines so they can continue serving their communities more effectively. “That extremely high level of compliance across CIU clubs, which has seen club officials and staff working hand-in-hand with local licensing authorities, has helped to give members the confidence to return in
significant numbers to their clubs and provide clubland the boost it needs after the shutdown. “But don’t forget that the Union is on hand to support your club during these tough times, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with your Branch Secretary for advice if you require it. “Meanwhile, as a Union, we will continue to lobby the Government for ongoing help for our sector.”
Macmillan Cancer Support urges clubs to host charity coffee mornings
Macmillan Cancer Support is urging clubs & pubs to get involved in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ in September. The event is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event and sees people and institutions hosting their own Coffee Mornings in aid of the charity. Macmillan stresses that
while the official date of the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ is Friday, September 25, clubs can host their event on a date and time that is convenient to their members and can be a gathering of any description with some venues opting for afternoon or evening garden parties, bingo nights, tombolas or
prosecco parties, for example. Registrations for 2020 are open so all you have to do is sign up at the charity’s website to receive your free fundraising kit.
You can also download promotional posters, cake recipes and get tips on holding a successful event. For more information, visit: coffee.macmillan. org.uk

Bennett is back-to-back FishOMania champion
Andy Bennett became the first angler to successfully defend his FishOMania title when he won last weekend’s £50,000 match at Hayfield Lakes, Doncaster with 40.1kg at the end of a gripping afternoon of fishing. In what was one of the most exciting afternoons FishOMania has enjoyed, the lead changed hands four times before Bennett took command in the second half of the match. Luke Sears, one of the early leaders, maintained the pressure at the top with a 5.3kg ninth weigh, while Bennett had nothing, meaning the defending champion had a lead of less than 3kg with 30 minutes to fish. However, with 15 minutes remaining Bennett brought in a sizeable carp which looked likely to be enough for the match and proved to be just that at the final weigh as Bennett took the title with more than 6kg more than runner-up Sears, who completed the afternoon with 33.850kg in his bag. “It feels amazing,” said Bennett. “I am absolutely over the moon. To win FishOMania is amazing, but to defend it is unbelievable. “It was quite a simple match really; I had one short and the rest on a bomb. I didn’t think it was going
to happen. I had a good run in that fourth hour, got myself back into it and said to bank runner Paul, anything can happen. With an hour to go I thought it would be quite simple and then it stopped going around; that’s bomb fishing for you. It made that last 40 minutes a bit nerve-racking because I couldn’t get a bite on anything. “You can’t catch them if they aren’t there and there has been some fish in the deeper water and they have settled here and it has been my day and I’m absolutely made up. “I’ll be back next year and hopefully I draw another good peg because three in a row would be some going!”

Sears took the £10,000 prize for coming second, while Lee Farmer came third and collected £2,500 as one of three section winners. Three-time FishOMania champion Jamie Hughes, who lead early in the match, won section three while Chris Lane was the section one winner.

Monk: A Neil Redfearn positive week announced as for Wednesday women’s head coach After sharing the spoils with Leicester at Loughborough University, Garry Monk reflected on a positive week in the Midlands. The Owls gave a good account of themselves in a friendly fixture that finished goalless but could have gone either way. But the aim of the game was fitness levels and it was mission accomplished to that end. Monk told swfc.co.uk: “Leicester came full strength so it was a really good test for us. The main part was to see the things we have been working on since we came back and I thought we did that defensively and attacking wise. “So there were a lot of positive things to come out of it. They had their chances, we had ours, and overall I wanted to see the structure with and without the ball and the intensity in our play. “We played with a good intensity against not just a Premier League side but one of the top Premier League sides. We knew it was going to be a very good test, the players knew, and I thought we did very well.” The primary part of the exercise was for the players to store match minutes following a fortnight of pre-season training, initially at Middlewood Road and this week at Loughborough. That was achieved as the whole squad enjoyed a run-out against Foxes, who also mixed their personnel as the game unfolded. Monk added: “All the players got some minutes and that was exactly what we were looking for and that’s done the world of good to cap off a really good week for us. The young players bring the legs and energy and the plan is to move towards making the squad more dynamic. “We’ve had a great week and the spirit is there for everyone to see. Everyone is together, we’ve done a lot of hard work with some team activities as well, so in terms of what we wanted from the week here, we got that.”
Sheffield United is delighted to announce the appointment of Neil Redfearn as United women’s new head coach. Redfearn takes over after previous spells in the women’s game with Doncaster Rovers Belles and Liverpool, the former of which he won the league with in 2018. The 55-year-old has also managed Leeds United and Rotherham United in the men’s game before most recently working at Newcastle United with the Under 23 side. The former Belles manager takes charge with immediate effect ahead of next weekend’s season opener against London City Lionesses. The new Blades head coach said: “It’s very exciting. It’s a massive club and the women’s team has made good strides over the past couple of seasons, so it’s a good place to be. “I really enjoyed my time at Belles and Liverpool, women’s football is really on the up and Sheffield United have been a big part of that. It’s a really exciting place to be.” Redfearn led the Belles to eleven wins out of twelve during his last spell in the league, guiding a team which included current Blades Leandra Little, Jade Pennock, Sophie Walton and Emily Batty to the title two years ago. “It’s important because they know how I work and it helps the transition for the rest of the girls. It’s a case of trying to get us in a position where we can have a really positive season again. Those that were at the Belles, they know the route, they know the way, they know how to get out of this division.” Chief executive officer, Stephen Bettis, added: “We are delighted to welcome Neil, he is experienced in women’s football and we hope he will help Sheffield United continue on the upward trajectory of the past couple of seasons.” United women kick off their third FA Women’s Championship campaign at London City Lionesses on Sunday 6th September (2pm) before returning to the Proact against Leicester City on Sunday 13th September (2pm), a game which will be streamed live at faplayer. thefa.com/home/womens-championship
Moore pleased with performance at Blackburn
Darren Moore felt the Carabao Cup tie at Blackburn Rovers was a good workout for his side in what was their first competitive game of the 2020/21 campaign. Moore’s side were beaten 3-2 in an entertaining game at Ewood Park, but the manager was pleased with various aspects of the performance.
Woody announced as PFA Community Champion Woodys commitment to making a difference in the local area has been recognised by the Professional Footballers’ Association. Richard has been named Rotherham United’s PFA Community Champion of the Year for the 2019/20 season due to his commitment to making a difference in the local area.
He said: “I thought it was a good game, we started quite well and had to deal with them because they are a good team. “In the end we ran out of legs in terms of where we are, we knew it would be tough in the last 20 minutes. “I’ve got no complaints with it and we probably lost the game because we haven’t had as much time on the training pitch as we would have liked.” Rovers initially turned the game on it’s head after taking a 2-1 lead midway through the second-half, and Moore says he wanted his players to express themselves. He added: “When the boys are firing then that sharpness is there but we will take a lot out of the game in terms of matching a really good side. “We told them at half time to recognise the state of the play, we allowed them to play with a bit more freedom and we took the opportunities.
The club captain is not only a leader on the pitch, he brings the same qualities off the field and thrives on making a difference in the local community. Throughout the season he played a prominent role within the community attending numerous events and sessions hosted by both the Club and Trust, such as visits to local primary schools, community venues, key stake holder events, match day activities plus many more. After winning the award, Woody commented: “I’m delighted to receive this fantastic award, the club and community provide an amazing service to the local area and I will do everything I can to support them, regardless of the cause. Rotherham United and the local community are one big family, being a part of this for the last several years has been an honour.” “I would also like to thank the PFA for the continued support and commitment to the professional footballing community.”
