SHEFFIELD calls on residents to support Great British September Clean The council is calling on all residents to support a national campaign in a bid to help clean up Sheffield communities. As part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British September Clean, the council will be offering support to those who want to make a difference to litter levels this September, with a focus between the 11th – 27th September, in recognition of a national drive to rid communities of litter. Earlier this year, the council pledged to support the campaign, originally scheduled for Spring 2020, but the impact of Covid 19 meant that many events could not go ahead and so alternative dates this
September were confirmed. For the fourth time since the campaign started, the council is encouraging citizens to get involved in litter- picking activities whilst adhering to the current guidelines on social distancing, by picking alone or with small groups of likeminded volunteers. In previous years, hundreds of people have come out in support of the campaign to help change behaviour when it comes to taking responsibility for the environment, many of whom are involved in litter picking activities all year round. Cabinet member for Environment, Street Scene and Climate Change, Councillor Mark Jones said:
“The Great British September Clean is a fantastic incentive to get people talking about the importance of keeping areas clean and taking action by disposing of litter in the right way. “Litter picking has an immediately positive impact on our neighbourhoods and means we can continue to take pride in the city we all call home. However, in these very different times, we must remember to put safety first and follow the guidance around social distancing so that we don’t jeopardise our health and that of those around us. “In recent months, with more and more people spending time outdoors and enjoying the
abundance of green spaces we have here in Sheffield, there has been a notable increase in litter being left by a small minority. “In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need to spend money or give up valuable time to clear up after others; yet tackling litter continues to be a huge undertaking for already stretched council services, as well as the volunteers who selflessly dedicate their own time to help clean up our streets and parks.” The Great British September Clean initiative comes at a time when caring for the environment and living more sustainably has never been more important. And whilst volunteers in
Sheffield continue to support the drive for cleaner streets, the council is tackling litter louts head on with well over a thousand Fixed Penalty Notices being issued this year alone. In addition, routine street cleaning is undertaken by Amey on a continuous basis as part of the Streets Ahead highways maintenance contract and over 100,000 requests for street cleaning have been dealt with since 2012.

Night Strider 2020 - do it your own way! IT’S usually a night of colour, fun, and fantastic fundraising for St Luke’s Hospice…but the 2020 Night Strider will have a new COVID-safe format for all the family to enjoy. Night Strider is the popular St Luke’s October charity spectacular that sees supporters heading off into the night on either a 10k or walking half marathon challenge. Almost 1,000 people took part in Night Strider 2019, raising more than £115,000 for St Luke’s patients and their families. 2020 would have marked Night Strider’s sixth anniversary but when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, a new plan had to be developed - and Night Strider has gone virtual! The Night Strider virtual challenge - sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - will see participants register free of charge to do their own fundraising event any time between between Saturday October 3 - the ‘evening that
Night Strider would have taken place - and Saturday October 31. “Our usual Night Strider is not open to under 10s but this year there’s a great chance for the whole family to get involved and create their own fun event,” said St Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak. “You choose your own date, your own route, your own level of personal challenge and then you simply get out there and have a great time. “Daytime or evening, it doesn’t matter when you get active so long as you let everybody know that you’re fundraising and need their support. “It doesn’t even have to be a walk - you can swim, hop, hula hoop or do absolutely anything that will keep the Night Strider spirit alive until we can all meet up again. “Our aim, of course, is to make this a massive success and the key to that is encouraging all your family and friends to give you as much support as possible.
“Raising £65 in sponsorship could contribute to a family who has recently lost a loved one receiving two hours of our specialised bereavement support. “And if you were to raise more than £200 you would be helping to pay for a day of tailored therapy sessions for a terminally ill patient, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and spiritual care - all
the things that help give our patients the opportunity to have a better quality of life at the end of their life. “Just remember to keep things safe and socially distanced and make sure that everybody has fun!”

Olga’s intervention paved the way for legendary Def Leppard homecoming show
She quickly got on the phone to the band’s management, humbly apologised and rescued the situation. Her intervention paved the way for one of the most famous shows ever seen in the Steel City - the night the multi-million selling Def Leppard returned to perform in her honour for the same £15 fee she’d paid them when they were a struggling rock band in 1979. Now a new range of merchandise is being released that celebrates Olga Marshall’s influence on the rock scene in Sheffield and remembers venues like the Wapentake, Rebels and the Casbah. Neil Anderson, who helped organise the Def Leppard show, said: “Olga Marshall was an unlikely figurehead
for the Newcastle Brown drinking, heavy metal listening bunch of rockers that packed into the legendary Wapentake Bar for nearly three decades. But she was loved by the whole of the region’s rock community.” Always impeccably dressed without a hint of denim or leather - Olga Marshall, who sadly passed away in 2019, was already a mother of four by 1972, she didn’t smoke and she rarely drank. Def Leppard performed at her Wapentake Bar for the last time on October 5, 1995, in the presence of Olga Marshall and the world’s press. The new Sheffield rock merchandise can be viewed at: www.dirtystopouts.com
When one of the world’s biggest rock bands shuns the country’s arenas in favour of an intimate gig in your pub you’d think you’d welcome it with open arms. But when Def Leppard attempted to book a gig at Sheffield’s Wapentake Bar they were given short thrift - ‘sorry love, we don’t put bands on anymore’, said the barmaid. Olga Marshall, the venue’s legendary manager that was on holiday at the time, was suitably horrified when she heard what had happened.

Wooden shoe? My neighbor has been mad at his wife for sunbathing nude. I personally am on the fence. Why do cows wear bells? Because their horns don’t work. My wife rang me at the pub and said, “If you’re not home in 10 minutes, I’m giving the dinner I cooked you to the dog.” I was home in 5 minutes. I’d hate for anything to happen to the dog.

city homeless charity Emmaus Sheffield to welcome visitors back to its popular second hand superstore. Emmaus Sheffield is the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for formerly homeless people in the city. Through its Social Enterprise programme it aims to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become self-supporting once more. One of the charity’s main fundraising projects is its extremely popular second hand and vintage store at the Emmaus Sheffield headquarters in the historic Sipelia Works, close to the city’s Canal Basin. And with the store now open again in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic - by appointment only - steps have been taken to keep both the Emmaus companions and visitors safe. A £5,000 donation from the Masonic Province of Yorkshire, West Riding, was used to buy a fogger, an essential tool in helping to prepare larger items of furniture for safe resale. The donation also paid for a new perspex screen round the store’s counter area and items of PPE for staff and companions. “The safety of our team and also our customers is our top priority at the moment and this donation from the Freemasons really has made a massive difference to the way we operate,” said Emmaus Sheffield Deputy Manager Charley Fedorenko. The Emmaus Sheffield second hand superstore is now open 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. To book a visit or for further information about the charity simply visit emmaus-sheffield.org.uk
Thirty million adults in the UK could be at risk of serious health issues because they don’t check their blood pressure, according to new research. As many as six in ten adults don’t know their own reading, whilst a quarter don’t even know what blood pressure is, according to research commissioned by not-for-profit healthcare provider, Benenden Health. The findings come during Know Your Numbers! Week (7-13 September), a campaign encouraging adults across the UK to know their blood pressure numbers and take the necessary action to reach and maintain a healthy blood pressure. Even if they showed symptoms of high or low blood pressure, such as headaches, blackouts and dizziness, a quarter of respondents (26%) said they wouldn’t visit a GP, with a fifth (20%) of these saying they would be put off by lengthy waiting times. A further 20% said they felt it wouldn’t be important enough to seek medical support about. The data also showed that 5% of UK adults have never had their blood pressure checked and as many as one in five (18%) can’t remember when it was last taken. One in ten (11%) said they were unsure where their blood pressure could be checked,
UK holidaymakers hoping for an Autumn break in the sun will be disappointed to learn that the govenrment has added seven popular Greek islands to the lst of those destinations which will require two weeks’ quarantine following a visit. The islands affected are Crete, Lesvos, Mykonos, Santorini, Serifos, Tinos, and Zakynthos (also known as Zante). This means that uk residents currently on the islands must return by 4:00 am Wednesday morning if they wish to avoid quarantining. The government says islands can be treated differently from mainland countries if infection rates differ. However the rate was considered to be still too high in Spain’s Balearic and Canary Islands to remove them from the list of destinations from where travellers returning to England must quarantine. Transport minister Grant Shapps said if someone was unable to quarantine for 14 days after returning to the UK “it might be best not to travel”. Meanwhile holiday insurance experts are warning travellers to check thier policies. “People are already confused about how coronavirus could impact their travel insurance. And with advice varying from region to region, as snap changes are taking place on the UK quarantine list, it’s hard to know where we stand. As the all but essential travel ban comes into effect in England from this Wednesday for the Greek islands, it means insurance won’t cover those still planning to travel.”
with an additional 10% saying they wouldn’t have it taken due to fear of the results. To tackle the issue, Benenden Health has produced a new online tool to help people understand what blood pressure is and offer tailored advice to users in order to achieve and maintain a healthy reading. With around a third of adults in the UK having high blood pressure, many will not realise it, meaning that more than five million are at increased risk of potentially deadly health conditions without their knowledge. High blood pressure, or hypertension, rarely has noticeable symptoms. But if untreated, it can increase the risk of serious problems including heart attacks and strokes. Low blood pressure that causes an inadequate flow of blood to the body’s organs can also increase the risk of medical complications including heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. Despite resisting checks and medical advice, only half of all respondents could correctly identify a healthy blood pressure and nearly two thirds (60%) did not know what they can do to raise or lower their blood pressure, with three quarters (77%) of respondents thinking there should be more information available on how to manage a healthy blood pressure. Cheryl Lythgoe, Matron at Benenden Health, said: “As a result of our findings, we’ve developed an online tool to help people understand what blood pressure is, what the risk factors are and what they can do to raise or lower their reading. Checking – and understanding - your blood pressure can be a really simple, yet hugely important activity in monitoring and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. People shouldn’t be afraid to get checked

07504 848323 out as it is simple to do and even if your reading is outside of the normal threshold, blood pressure can be managed to minimise the threat of associated health risks. Despite the current climate, we shouldn’t ignore our wider health and would encourage people to find out their reading either by visiting their GP or pharmacy or by purchasing a machine themselves at a very reasonable price. The real danger with blood pressure comes when we ignore it or don’t see it as important. As symptoms aren’t always easy to spot, without an accurate reading you could be in danger of missing out on a vital indication that you are at risk of a serious medical condition. We therefore highly recommend regular monitoring and if you do have any concerns, that you visit your GP and are not put off by the current climate in doing so.” For more information about the symptoms and issues surrounding blood pressure, and to understand what your reading means, go to: www.benenden.co.uk/bloodpressure.

The Angling Trust’s Anglers Against Litter campaign provides a voice for anglers wanting to see an end to the harm litter and plastics cause fish and wildlife. Discarded litter can enter rivers, flow into estuaries and wash up on beaches all over the UK. It releases toxic pollutants and becomes an eyesore that is overwhelming our countryside. Anglers Against Litter acts as a platform for anglers to call for an end to littering and excessive plastic consumption. It also promotes easy steps that anglers can take to help reduce their own litter. Together we can take a stand against litter, and work towards cleaner healthier waters. Staycation sparks surge in waste Since lockdown restrictions have been lifted there has been an increase in litter and plastic pollution
on our beaches and in our rivers. With many people taking staycations this year, more litter and plastics are polluting the countryside and coastal resorts. Waters have also become littered with a new threat – personal protection equipment (PPE). One recent clean-up on a Cornish beach found 171 gloves and face masks in the sea and on the sand in just one hour. Images of popular UK beauty spots inundated by plastic pollution have been widespread in the media, and many of our fishing spots are the same. Anglers Against Litter wants an end to the harm litter and plastics are having on our environment. But we need your help. The more people that show their support for the campaign, the greater our voice can be in calling for change. Leading by example, anglers can demonstrate how we should be looking after our environment and encourage others to do the same.

Pre-season, cup success and battle for the shirt
A battle for the starting shirt, a tough pre-season, a clean sheet in the cup and a penalty shootout save were topics on the agenda for Cameron Dawson on Saturday. The win at the Banks’s Stadium over Walsall in the Carabao Cup was Dawson’s first competitive appearance since early March and one that was much needed. Although largely untroubled throughout the 90 minutes, what the Wednesday keeper had to do, he did well – including a save in the penalty shootout to hand the Owls the advantage from the spot. He said: “It’s nice to make a save in a shootout and contribute to a win at the end of the day. “It’s been a while since I’ve been out there with something riding on the game, so it was nice to get 90 minutes in after working really hard, trying to make improvements. “Then to come out here and show what I’ve been working on and put in a positive performance, yes, I’m delighted to be back. “I’ve had a tough time, but it’s how you go about things from there. You have to work hard and really

try to improve yourself, come back better, come back stronger. “I’m not saying one performance changes everything but it’s a start and we’ll go from there. “The manager and his staff have been working hard with us in training, getting the right players in and hopefully we can go out there and have a really positive season.” It’s clear from all angles that the Wednesday squad have enjoyed an excellent pre-season on and off the pitch, with hard work and new characters in the dressing room adding to a positive environment. For Cameron and Joe Wildsmith, the pair have been doing all they can to impress the manager and new goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan. “It’s a very respectful battle,” Dawson said. “Joe and I have been close for many years, we’ve worked together and pushed each other and that’s the main thing. “We work hard, we push each other and this preseason it’s been neither of us giving an inch, doing things the right way. “It’s been enjoyable these last few weeks but really hard work, we have spent a lot of hours on that training pitch working on our games and techniques and we’ll keep doing that.” And as the new season comes into sharp focus this week, Dawson added: “We all want to be here, we believe in what we’re doing, we believe in the staff and the manager, we have come in everyday with a really good attitude, wanting to work, wanting to learn and we’ve had a lot of information to take on. We’re looking forward to giving everything to have a good season.”

Chris Wilder has added two exciting wing-backs to his squad, with the long-term signings of Derby County duo Jayden Bogle and Max Lowe. Both players have penned four-year deals at Bramall Lane with United paying the Rams an undisclosed combined fee for their services. On the double deal, a delighted Wilder remarked: “The Championship has been a great recruitment area for us and I wanted to bring some young players in who will provide competition for places. “Jayden and Max will put huge pressure on George (Baldock) and Enda (Stevens). It was important we got the right characters, the right type of players, ones who are athletic and technically very good, both are modern day wing backs and I’m looking forward to working with them. “We’ve got a clear plan and identification of what we need and we’re still going through that process. We’re not just signing players because other people are in for them, we’re signing these players because they fit into what we are about.
With a further 18 appearances and one stunning goal in the Hamburg derby under the belt, Penney returned to Middlewood Road to stake his claim for a place in Garry Monk’s squad. And following a good pre-season campaign and a positive performance on Saturday at Walsall, Penney has given his chances of featuring this season a significant shot in the arm. With all eyes on the Championship opener away at Cardiff this weekend, he will no doubt be pushing as hard as possible to play some part.
Sheffield Wednesday academy product Matt Penney more than caught the eye with his weekend performance in the Carabao Cup. The 22-year-old came on for the final third of the game and made his presence felt with a dynamic display, as the Owls booked their place in round two with a win over Walsall on penalties. In fact, his contribution for those 30 minutes was enough for Sky Sports to name Penney as the Carabao Man of the Match. It has been quite some year for the Wednesday man, who has been at the club since the age of eight. Having broken through into the Wednesday first team in 2018/19, making 17 appearances, the Owls youngster then bolstered his senior experience with a season-long loan spell at 2.Bundelsliga side St Pauli in 2019/20.

Blades make double swoop
“It’s game on for everyone, it’s not a warning, it’s a fact and yet again I have to thank the board for making the two permanent signings happen because it’s a great bit of business for the football club.” Bogle had spells at Reading and Swindon Town before moving to Pride Park in January 2016. Having impressed consistently for Derby’s U18s and U23s when selected, the attacking full back was promoted to the first team ahead of the 2018-19 campaign. Under then boss Frank Lampard, the England U20 international went on to make 50 appearances in a season that saw the Rams lose to Aston Villa in the play-off final at Wembley. Bogle arrives at Bramall Lane having amassed 90 senior games at the age of just 20. Meanwhile, Lowe came through Derby’s academy system and turned professional at Pride Park in June 2015. Comfortable anywhere down the left-hand side, his senior debut came in the EFL Cup in 2016, converting the decisive penalty in a 14-13 shootout win for the Rams against Carlisle United. The 23-year-old, who has represented England at numerous youth levels, has played close to 50 times for Derby, whilst more recently he has impressed in the SPL whilst on-loan at Aberdeen during two loan stints at Pittodrie.

United net Wales international United have made a third signing of the day, with Chris Wilder adding a versatile Welsh international to his squad. Chelsea’s Ethan Ampadu, who can play in a number or defensive and midfield roles, arrives at Bramall Lane on a season-long loan deal, following the arrival of Derby County duo Jayden Bogle and Max Lowe. Of Ampadu, Wilder commented: “Ethan is an outstanding young player for Chelsea, and we’ve worked really hard to get his signature for the season. “We need to thank Frank Lampard and the people at Chelsea for helping making this happen. We’ve got a good relationship with them and they know we’re going to take good care of him. “It’s an important season for Ethan and playing in the Premier League for us is a good move for everyone. He brings a lot of qualities to the group and he’s someone we’ve tracked for two or three seasons.” The Exeter born operator began his career at his hometown club and made his senior debut for the Grecians as a 15-year-old in an EFL Cup tie against Brentford in August 2016. In the summer of 2017, the Blues came calling for Ampadu’s services and when he made his Stamford Bridge debut a few months later he became Chelsea’s youngest debutant in over a decade. In 2018, the now 13 times capped Wales international, penned a new five-year deal in the capital and was sent out on-loan to RB Leipzig by Frank Lampard to further his development last season.
Kachunga in contention for Saturday
New Owls striker Elias Kachunga will be ready for the Championship opener this weekend at Cardiff. Wednesday revealed the new signing last week but with limited time on the training ground before the EFL Cup clash with Walsall, the former Huddersfield man did not travel to Banks’s Stadium. But with a good week of training with the squad at Middlewood Road, Monk says Kachunga will be in contention to make his debut in the Welsh capital. “Kache will be ready for next week,” Monk said. “I just felt with him he’s only just come through the door. “He’d been with us for 48 hours or so, whereas Josh Windass had the advantage that he already knows how we work. “I didn’t want to put him in a position where he didn’t fully know what’s what. But he’ll have a good week’s training, he’s fully fit and ready. He will be ready for Saturday.” Chey Dunkley is another who has made a strong impression since arriving at Hillsborough earlier in the window and the Owls manager revealed the centre back is not far away from full fitness. “In terms of Chey, he’s not far away. I’ve said it before, I knew when he was coming here, he was going to be a little bit behind the others but he is working hard, progressing every day. “The same goes for Osaze, so hopefully we’ll get to that first game or just after with a fully fit squad. “There were no injuries in the Walsall game so that’s a positive, a good workout and most importantly a win.”

Taylor Richards says playing in different positions will develop his game during his loan-spell with Rovers. The Brighton loanee has played in a defensive midfield role in his first two games in a Rovers shirt, and he believes learning that position will bring out the best in him.
He said: “I feel comfortable playing in different positions, wherever the gaffer wants to put me I know I can do a good job. “I know that playing in a more defensive role would develop my game and make me a more complete midfielder. “With the quality we have in the squad and the manager leading us I have no doubts that we can achieve something this season.” Richards provided an assist for Rovers’ first goal in the 5-0 win over Manchester United U23s on Thursday, and says the game was a good one to bring their preseason campaign to an end. He added: “I think it was a good game for everyone to get minutes in the legs, I got another 45 working towards Tuesday and that will be good for me. “I feel like we’re nearly there in terms of fitness, but it might take a couple of games to get back up to full speed.”

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne believes his side lacked a cutting edge after losing on penalties, following a 1-1 draw in normal time against Salford City. The Millers had the better of the chances in their Carabao Cup first round clash but found themselves behind inside the final 10 minutes. Matt Crooks’ late equaliser forced penalties but it was the hosts who prevailed into the next round. “I don’t think my goalkeeper had a save to make apart from the penalty but we still go out, so I’m disappointed with that,” Warne told www.themillers. co.uk. “We had good pockets of play, we weren’t probably at our best and there’s no excuses for that, but I thought we did enough to win a football game. “Their goalkeeper made some unbelievable saves, came for crosses, punched things away and kept us at bay really, so credit to them. “It’s all about scoring goals and they scored a goal and we got one right at the death and on the merit of play we probably deserved to win. “The lads never give up, they were hugely disappointed to go behind. In fairness to Salford they wanted to slow the game down, I don’t blame them for that but we peppered their goal. “The lads did score and once it goes to penalties it’s just a lottery. I’m disappointed because we wanted to win but unfortunately we didn’t do that.”
Darren Moore says it was good to get more minutes into his players after they beat Manchester United U23s in a pre-season friendly. Moore’s side ran out 5-0 winners at the Keepmoat Stadium, and the manager says it was a good way to prepare for the competitive season to really get going. He said: “It was a good workout for us, we wanted to work on some of the principles of our play and we managed to do that. “They gave us a tough test in the EFL Trophy last season and we knew they would come to play but we managed the game well. “Most players got 45 minutes or more which is good to keep them ticking over ahead of two games next week.” With the new league campaign a little over a week away, Moore believes his players will be as ready as they can be when hosting MK Dons on September 12. He added: “The work has been so important during this pre-season campaign, with a shortened period we’ve had to make the most of every day. “We’re managing the situation as well as we can, there has been a serious amount of concentration in our work, we’ve had to treat every friendly game as a competitive one.”
