Watchlist ‘area of concern’ for Sheffield A statement has been made by the Director Public Health at Sheffield City Council, Greg Fell in relation to the news released from the Department of Health and Social Care that Sheffield is on the watchlist and as such has been designated as an ‘area of concern’. This news may have given rise to concern and we want to reassure the public of what this means for our city.

Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “We would like to be clear with the public of Sheffield that there are a small number of significant ongoing incidents we are aware of. However, the overall incidence is increasing across the city, and we must pay attention to this as we continue to monitor the situation.

“With our Sheffield Coronavirus Prevention and Management Board we have a plan in place to deal with a wide range of scenarios, including this one. We are all well aware that Sheffield, like everywhere else, is not out of the woods and we all know we need to remain vigilant for some time. We know this picture changes constantly which is why it is essential that residents remain vigilant, stick to social distancing guidelines, continue to wash their hands regularly, get tested, and self-isolate if displaying symptoms and continue to help control the spread of the virus.

“Our key objective is to prevent the spread of the virus. If we don’t follow the safety measures in place to keep people safe, we will go into local lockdown it’s as

simple as that. We are seeing a rise in young people aged 18-24 contracting Covid-19, who are at low risk but can still carry the virus. So, we urge everyone to play their part and to stick to the safety measures to help stop the spread. Together we can make a big difference and keep our city safe.”

What does an ‘area of concern’ mean? The Department of Health and Social Care has designated Sheffield as an ‘area

of concern’. Each week, Public Health England (PHE) publishes a list of areas it is concerned about based on new coronavirus infection rates and other local intelligence.

These areas are categorised as either ‘areas of concern’, ‘areas of enhanced support’ or ‘areas of intervention’. Areas of concern are placed at the lowest end of the watchlist, but it does indicate higher rates of new infections in the area.

In these cases the Local

Authority will take action. For example, they might increase local testing, prevention interventions in specific settings, and work to improve contact tracing and isolation. The Sheffield Coronavirus Prevention and Management Board will look at where extra support might be needed to prevent more cases developing, it may mean additional testing and other interventions is introduced into new areas where the spread of the virus is highest.

Changes to Castlegate Festival 2020 A number of street activities that were due to form part of the Castlegate Festival 2020, are to be cancelled or postponed due to the new ‘rule of six’ social distancing guidelines introduced last week.

The Festival, which is organised by members of the Castlegate Partnership, will continue with virtual activities that can be accessed online from the 19th September.

The Castlegate Festival aims to celebrate the past, present and future of Sheffield’s oldest quarter, which is now undergoing a scheme of regeneration.

Despite the lockdown, the area has still seen much progress to celebrate this year, including the completion of the second phase of the transformational Grey to Green scheme, vacant buildings and upper floors refurbished for apartments, a growing circuit of cafes and bars, the continuing success of Kollider/Kommune as a social focus and workplace, the new Ding Junhui Snooker Academy, Skate England’s innovative

new street skating course and work about to start on the regeneration of the Old Town Hall.

However social distancing guidelines mean that some elements of the programme have been cancelled, including planned guided tours of the site of Sheffield Castle by the Friends of Sheffield Castle, Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust and Friends of the Old Town Hall. ‘Castlegate is Quay’, a street festival with music, food and stalls at Exchange St and Victoria Quays, is also cancelled.

A series of virtual tours of sites and buildings in Castlegate which are not open to the public will still be available to watch online, allowing people to explore Castelgate’s hidden historic gems and workplaces from the comfort of their own home, conjunction with Heritage Open Days.

The virtual tours include: Medieval Arches of Ladys Bridge and Wicker Tilt via canoe , Old Town Hall, Terminal Warehouse , Sheffield Castle, Grey to Green and Love Square, Castlegate’s River Sculptor The full virtual programme will be available at sheffield.gov. uk/castlegatefestival from 19th September.

Plans are continuing for the newly constructed street skating installation on Exchange St - to be known as Marioland – to open on Saturday 19th September, and the formal opening of Grey to Green Phase 2 will be carried out on Saturday 26th September.

support dogs get local councils issue coronavirus updates vital funding from local freemasons A Sheffield charity that provides, trains and supports specialist assistance dogs for people with a range of disabilities has received funding for a Labrador puppy from local Freemasons.

Ivanhoe Lodge, which meets in Sheffield, has given £20,000 to Support Dogs, which will pay for the two-year specialised training of the dog – appropriately named Ivanhoe .

Founded in 1992, national charity Support Dogs provides all its services entirely free of charge to those in need of them, specialising in three specific programmes: autism assistance dogs for children with autism, seizure alert dogs to detect seizures in people with epilepsy, and disability assistance dogs for people with a range of physical disabilities and medical conditions. Ivanhoe will be trained as an autism assistance dog to provide safety and companionship and helping to bring independence and a more socially inclusive life to both the child and their family.

Autism assistance dogs are shown to reduce stress for family members, promote positive changes in behaviour, provide comfort for children with autism when upset and reduce behavioural outbursts. They are also trained to keep a child safe using a wide range of methods.

John Clague, one of the Trustees of Ivanhoe Lodge, said: “Thanks to a sizeable legacy from the estates of the late Percy and Mary Parramore, we have been able to financially support this fantastic charity, and what Support Dogs do is simply inspirational. W Bro Percy Parramore was a highly respected Past Master of the Ivanhoe Lodge, and he and his sister, Mary, were life-long supporters of local charities, especially those associated with Freemasonry and scouting. I’m delighted that we are in a position to fund a new Support Dogs’ puppy, which has been called Ivanhoe in honour of our Lodge, and we look forward to hearing about his progress in the coming weeks, months and years.”

John added: “Charity is one of Freemasonry’s three founding principles. Last year, the legacy allowed us to purchase a new motorbike for the Whiteknights Yorkshire Blood Bikes as well as pay for its running costs for three years.

I’m proud to be a Freemason and incredibly proud of the support of we are able to offer to community groups in and around the Sheffield area.”

David Heugh, Support Dogs’ Partnerships’ Ambassador, said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to Ivanhoe Lodge for this wonderful donation. We provide all of our services entirely free of charge to those in need of them without Government support. Rotherham & Sheffield City Councils have issued updates on the current situation in respect of coronavirus & tresting in the area.

The NHS test and trace national booking system is reaching capacity. This is due to laboratory testing reaching national capacity on the day.

If you have COVID-19 symptoms you need to book a test. Testing remains a vital part in the fight against the spread of Covid-19 in the area and to help reduce the rate of people contracting the virus. However, you may experience a delay in being able to book a test using the national system. If you can’t get a test on the day, try again later or try the next day. Listen to the guidance you are provided at the point of arranging a booking. To make it clear, people should only book a test if they have symptoms of Covid-19. If you have coronavirus symptoms, you need to get a test done within the first 5 days of having symptoms.

If you have symptoms you must self-isolate at home and only leave your home to get a test.

If you have symptoms call 119 or follow the testing information on the NHS website www.nhs.uk/coronavirus to arrange a test.

As of Monday 14th September Sheffield City Council are no longer accepting walk-ins at the Local Testing Centres. You can only attend if you have an appointment. Please continue to book an appointment online or by calling 119.

If you cannot get an appointment right away, stay at home and continue to self-isolate until an appointment comes available for you. As a reminder, the Regional Testing Centre based at Meadowhall and the Mobile Testing Centre based at Olympic Park are only accessible if you have booked an appointment. Please do not drive to these sites unless you have booked a test as you will be turned away and asked to book an appointment. Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council Greg Fell, said “If you are unwell and are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms you need to get a test. If the booking system is not allowing you to book at the time you call, please try again later. It is important that you remain in your home and isolate to protect other people, including those who live with you. The best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to stay at home. If you cannot book a test, do not attend your doctor’s surgery. Wait for a test booking slot to come available and stay at home. I cannot stress this clearly enough.

It’s really important that anyone with Covid-19 symptoms can get a test. This will help us stop the spread of the virus. If you don’t have Covid19 symptoms and you are trying to book a test, do not book a test – you could be taking a test away from someone who really needs it. This is increasingly important as we head into autumn and winter and more people will get colds and the flu. Please only book a test if you have one of the 3 symptoms.”

Meanwhile in Rotherham Local Council and NHS leaders are urging everyone in the borough to show renewed caution and stick rigidly to Covid-19 guidelines to stay safe and keep Rotherham open after local infection rates more than doubled.

In the space of a week the local rate increased from of 9.8 per 100,000 people to 23.0 per 100,000 people. The current rate is below that of towns and cities where local lockdowns have been imposed, however it is expected that a further rise would see Rotherham back on the Government’s watch list, putting at risk some the freedoms and services that re-opened when infection rates were falling. Cllr Chris Read, said: “Over the last couple of months, we have made really good progress, moving from one of the highest infection rates in the country, to dropping below the national average. But the latest information shows we cannot afford to be complacent, even for a moment.

It’s possible to order a home-testing kit or attend the drive-through site at Midland Road, Masborough, or the walk-in site at Forge Island.

Appointments are preferred at Forge Island and face-coverings must be worn.

Anyone who receives a positive test result or has symptoms, must self-isolate at home for 10 days from the start of symptoms. Anyone they have been in contact with should also selfisolate for 14 days, even if they get a negative test result as they may still be incubating the infection.People testing positive will be asked to provide contact details of anyone they know they have been in close contact with so that the NHS Track and Trace team can get in touch with them to advise them to self-isolate.

Advice for anyone who is concerned about self-isolating or who needs support to do so is available through the Rotherham Community Hub.

What strikers live for

Jordan Rhodes was pleased to get off the mark during the Owls’ 2-0 opening day victory over Cardiff on Saturday.

The striker scored a typical poacher’s goal on 44 minutes which sealed the result in Wales, and he was delighted to have opened his tally.

Speaking exclusively with swfc.co.uk, Rhodes said: “It was by no means a classic, but strikers live for those scrappy goals!

“I’m really happy to get off the mark and help the team. That’s what strikers live for.

“Hopefully there’s a few more of those to come throughout the season and we can have a team that is strong in the set-piece department when attacking and defending.”

TWO EARLY GOALS FOR WOLVES LEAD TO BLADES OPENER DEFEAT

The concession of two early goals proved the difference, as United’s second season in the Premier League began in defeat at Bramall Lane.

Raul Jimenez and Romain Saiss put the visitors two goals in front inside the opening six minutes at S2 and despite creating several openings after the break, the Blades couldn’t find a way back into the game.

For the clash against Wolves, boss Wilder handed Ramsdale his second Blades debut, whilst fellow newcomers Burke, Ampadu and Foderingham were named amongst the substitutes where they were also joined by Berge and McGoldrick.

The new season got off to the worst possible start for the Blades, as Wolves took the lead inside three minutes. Podence broke down the United right, beat a retreating Lundstram before crossing into the box where JIMENEZ side footed into the roof of the net. And it got even worse three minutes later as Wolves added a second. Ramsdale tipped over a Jimenez effort at the expense of a corner, from which SAISS rose highest to head past the United stopper from Neto’s delivery.

With the visitors in front, the game was very open.

United looked to get numbers forward where possible, without a lot of joy, whilst Wolves were happy to try and catch the hosts on the break with Traore’s pace and Jimenez’s touch causing problems. As the half hour approached, Baldock, Lundstram and then Fleck kept the ball alive, only for referee Dean to adjudge that Sharp had fouled Patricio who failed to gather cleanly.

The Blades were quickly out of the blocks following the restart, but Stevens fired over from a promising

position after McBurnie got the better of Boly from Norwood’s diagonal ball forward. On 51 minutes, United came even closer to getting back into the game. Lundstram beat the offside trap and squared to Fleck who struck a low effort against the far post, before Coady’s diverted Baldock’s shot wide on the rebound.

United continued to do all the attacking in the second half and a marauding run forward from Egan created another opening, but Lundstram was unable to connect with Sharp’s ball across goal, with Patricio beaten. Still United pressed, but Wolves, mainly because of Coady, held out at the expense of another couple of corners.

Wolves first real attack in the second period would have seen a third goal, but for the brilliance of Ramsdale, who denied Saiss with the help of at the woodwork, before Jimenez prodded the rebound wide. It was end-to-end again, Lundstram freed an overlapping Baldock, but Sharp couldn’t keep his effort on target, with substitute McGoldrick involved in the build-up too.

Chances continued to come and go for both teams, McGoldrick was denied at one end, before Traore powered forward and sent a rasping effort over Ramsdale’s bar. Sharp rifled home in the second phase from Fleck’s corner, but the whistle had already been blown for a foul by Egan on Boly.

As the game entered the last ten minutes, Wolves started to threaten more often on the break, with Traore in a more advanced role. He beat O’Connell and Egan before seeing a deflection take a shot wide for a corner, from which Jimenez headed wide at the near post.

Typically, United pressed and pressed until the very end, but the ball just wouldn’t drop favourably in the visitors box, despite an ever increasing corner tally as five minutes added time were signalled. Berge’s cross picked out McBurnie and his header was destined to nestle in the goal before Saiss headed off the line, which summed up the Blades misfortune in front of goal.

Cup clash to be streamed live

United’s Carabao Cup second round tie at Burnley on Thursday evening will be streamed live.

The game (5.30pm kick-off ) will be shown in the UK only at www.carabaocup.live Carabao Cup matches will be available to purchase on an individual match pass price of £10 and season ticket holders will be required to purchase a match pass for all Carabao Cup fixtures.

Both clubs are continuing to work with the EFL to ensure supporters have enhanced coverage of the fixture.

Streaming is not available internationally, however 29 matches are made available across the competition to the EFL’s overseas broadcast partners.

The streaming of Carabao Cup matches is a temporary measure that has been put in place while clubs operate at a zero or reduced capacity as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and will be subject to regular review.

Taking nothing for granted Garry Monk insists there is little to choose between the two young goalkeepers at his disposal.

Cameron Dawson took the gloves for Saturday’s win at Cardiff and posted another clean sheet to match the shutout in the Carabao Cup last weekend.

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne couldn’t hide his delight after his team began their 2020/21 Sky Bet Championship campaign with a last-gasp victory at Adams Park.

“We’ve worked really hard on set-plays this week and it has paid dividends, to score late on obviously gives me great joy.

“It was a really difficult game and both teams defended and attacked well on set-pieces and it was no surprise the game was won on one.

“We said to the lads they would have no time in the middle of the pitch, so it is difficult. So, to come here and get a win is great.

Moore expecting more from Gomes Darren Moore feels there is more to come from Madger Gomes this season after he netted Rovers’ first goal of the 2020/21 Sky Bet League One season.

Rovers took the lead in the second half against MK Dons through a stunning goal from Gomes but Baily Cargill’s 88th minute equaliser cancelled out the Spaniard’s effort.

Moore said: “It is really important for Madger Gomes to add goals to his game this season. We know he has a lovely left foot on him. He’s looked very strong especially when he came back this summer.

“Madger’s a clever player, he sees passes, can quicken up the play and a wonderful appetite and desire. This summer he has come back in good shape and good form and it’s now down to him how well and far he can take this season.

“Today it was a well struck goal from him today.

At the time we felt that we were in the ascendancy coming out in the second half and it was about seeing the game through. I’m disappointed we conceded late but looking on the balance of the game, I think a point was fair.”

Tyreece John-Jules and Rayhaan Tulloch were handed their senior debuts after spending half of the week in training after joining on loan from Arsenal and West Brom respectively, Moore says he had no hesitation in starting the pair.

Moore added: “It was the right type of game to bring them in and I thought they responded really well for two young lads. There’s been a lot of information we’ve given them over the last 48 hours and they’ve been excellent in terms of how they responded to it all today.

“It is about managing both players and getting their minutes up to a level to where they need to be at fitness-wise. Their contribution to the team has been really well.

“With the relentless programme we’ve got coming up in the next two to three weeks every single player will get their part to play. My message has been clear to all the players to be ready because I will call upon every single one of them.”

“It has reinforced the message on set-pieces, we had a Tuesday night session on them and we got our reward for that.”

With Warne well aware of the threats posed by Wycombe he admitted that a point on the road looked enticing, but was pleased with the way his side grew into the game before eventually winning it.

“I think Wycombe will cause teams no end of problems, they give you no time on the ball and they press.

“Their press was really good, and they fought for every ball. It was about our lads having the diligence to win the second balls.

“I would’ve been happy with a draw but we did go to try and win the game, I’m biased, but I thought there was only one team going to win it at the end.

But while there’s set-pieces involved they always have a chance, it gives me great pride that they stuck in.

“I was really pleased for Jamal Blackman, he’s had a long time without any football and for him to keep a clean sheet, I’m delighted for him,” Warne added.

Tulloch pleased with debut Ray Tulloch says he enjoyed his first taste of competitive football in a Rovers shirt after making his debut in the draw against MK Dons.

The forward provided the assist for Madger Gomes’ second-half strike, before Baily Cargill levelled the scores for the visitors.

He said: “It was a good experience to get out with the boys, it was tough but everyone put in a shift to earn a draw.

“We did well for the majority of the game and kept them out, it was just disappointing to concede the goal late on.

“It was a different type of game for me than I’ve been used to, the winning mentality is good within the dressing room.”

After only a couple of training sessions since joining the club, Tulloch says he is looking forward to developing the relationship between him and his new teammates.

He added: “Coming from West Brom I didn’t really know anyone or the area but everyone has welcomed me and I feel wanted.

“I’m still getting to know the boys so I’m sure once I’ve had a few more training sessions I’ll improve.”
