Anyone visiting a pub/club and workers will be required to wear masks inside and leave by 10pm, the Prime Minister announced in the House of Commons this week (Tuesday 22 September).

Boris Johnson laid out the areas where the face covering rule has been extended to, as part of the Government’s bid to prevent the spread of the virus.

“We must act from the virus being transmitted in bars and restaurants,” he said. “We will extend the requirement to wear face coverings to include

staff in retail, all users of taxis and private hire vehicles and staff and customers in indoor hospitality, except when seated at a table to eat or drink.

“In retail, leisure and tourism and other sectors, our Covidsecure guidelines will become legal obligations. Businesses will be fined and could be closed if they breach the rules.”

Johnson also confirmed the Government’s planned 10pm curfew for all pubs, restaurants and bars from Thursday (24 September),

alongside table service only at the same time.

Simplicity is paramount “From Thursday all pubs, bars and restaurants must operate a table service only, except for takeaways,” Johnson said.

“Together with all those venues, they must close at 10pm. To help police enforce this rule, it means closing, not just calling for last orders because simplicity is paramount.

“The same will apply to takeaways though deliveries can continue thereafter.”

Johnson also explained the

rule of six will be “tightened” among new restrictions for social gatherings.

“From Monday (28 September) a maximum of 15 people will be able to wedding ceremonies and receptions,” he said.

“Though up to 30 can still attend a funeral as now. We will also have to extend the rule of six to all adult team sports.”

The PM added: “We have to acknowledge the spread of the virus is now affecting our ability to reopen business conferences, exhibitions and

large sporting events.

“So we will not be able to do this from 1 October and I recognise the implications for our sports clubs which are the life and soul of our communities and the Chancellor and Culture Secretary are working urgently on what we can do now to support them.”

Johnson also mentioned that unless we “palpably make progress, we should assume the restrictions I have announced, will remain in place, for perhaps, six months.”

LOCKDOWN PARAMOUNT TO THEATRE’S £100K REFURB After months in mothballs the staff at Penistone Paramount were delighted to finally re-open its doors to the public last Friday!

Although for now live events cannot be held, a program of cinema screenings has been put in place. And while under lockdown, the staff have been busy with over £100,000 invested in a major refurbishment of the facilities, with a full program of redecoration and the installation of new (but traditional) seating throughout the venue.

Town mayor Coun. Steve Webber says the revamp has been a ‘Herculean

effort'. "And it has only been made possible by the patience and hard work of our staff, some of whom have been furloughed for a few months and others who have worked hard behind the scenes co-ordinating the project," he said. “I send my own and the Town Council's sincere thanks to them all for their professional attitude and passion to see the Paramount opening again. The Covid-19 crisis has been devastating in its impact on every part of our lives and in every part of the area.

The Town Council has been forced, like many

businesses, to close down for a period and to take extraordinary measures before re-opening. The financial implications will take years to make good. However, while not making light of the circumstances, the council has made use of the enforced shutdown to do a series of planned improvement works to the Paramount rather than affect future trading.

In all, some £100,000 has been spent on refurbishment - including replacing old seating, fully painting the auditorium, sanding and varnishing wooden floors, laying new flooring to the Circle area

and laying new carpets."

The Paramount reopens under new rules and guidance, with restricted seating due to social distancing and a restructured staffing policy, and a muchreduced capacity of around 100, rather than 350. Only pre-booked tickets are on offer at the moment although people can order snacks and drinks online when buying tickets. The cinema is also moving to a cashless system using Paramount Gift Cards.

"We have had to move away from the use of large amounts of coins, to notes only, to avoid any

health and safety issues as well as time-consuming cashing up routines," said Coun Webber. "This will be new and perhaps there will be teething problems.

However, we ask people to be patient while we get the Paramount on course. The Paramount

is our 'jewel in the crown' and we hope the refurbishment will give it a new appeal. We hope people will enjoy coming back to watch films as much as we will enjoy reopening a local venue that we have all sorely missed.”

revealing Sheffield’s government announce new covid long-lost castle the Arctic Monkeys to the quality of its rules as rates rise From steel, the city of Sheffield is known around the As was widely expected following yesterday’s briefing by the country’s chief scientists, the Prime Minister announced a new range of restrictions which the public are expected to follow from this week.

Boris Johnson presented the range of measures to Parliament on Tuesday lunchtime, ahead of an address to the British people on Tuesday evening.

In the face of rising positive tests across the whole country, action is being taken in the hope of reducing the “R” number back to levels seen in early summer. Some of the measures represent a complete change of policy, and also the further easing expected in October will no longer happen. There is a pause on plans to allow audiences back into major sporting events, and home working is once again being encouraged in the short term.

In addition, penalties for breaches of the guidelines have been increased, and some new measures have been added to help enforce the requirements - business owners now face fines of up to £10,000 for breaching the rules, and assistance has been promised to the police and councils in enforcing the new laws.

Following on from facts presented yesterday, the Prime Minister confirmed that it may be six months at least before we can look at returning to a some sort of normality.

However there was no mention of ongoing support for families and businesses in his presentation, and pressure is growing for this to be addressed as a matter of urgency as October sees the end of the furlough scheme, with a potenetial raft of redudancies to follow across the retail and hospitality sectors as a result.

At this stage, there will be no change to the limits on social gatherings, which remains as the “Rule of Six” - unlike some of the restrictions placed on households who are under local lockdown and prohibited from meeting others in the home. However the government were at pains to point out that this remains under review and may be subject to change if rates do not decrease as hoped Under the new measures: • Penalties for not wearing a mask or gathering in groups of more than six will increase to £200 on the first offence • From Thursday, all pubs, bars and restaurants will be restricted to table service only.

• Takeaways can continue • Hospitality venues must close at 22:00 which means shutting then, not calling for last orders” • Office workers are being told to work from home if possible • The planned return of spectators to sports venues will now not go ahead from October 1 • Face coverings must be worn by shop staff, taxi drivers and passengers • Customers in indoor hospitality venues will also have to wear masks, except when seated at a table to eat or drink • Exemptions to the “rule of six” will be cut back, meaning indoor team sports such as five-a-side football matches will end.

• Weddings and similar functions will be limited to a new maximum of 15 guests • The limit for funerals will remain at 30

However, its long-lost castle – which was once among the most powerful political and cultural centres in medieval England – deserves a place in the history books as well, according to archaeologists.

In Sheffield Castle: Archaeology, Archives, Regeneration, 1927-2018, written by Professor John Moreland from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Archaeology, Professor Dawn Hadley from the University of York’s Department of Archaeology, and Ashley Tuck and Mili Rajic from Wessex Archaeology. the castle’s impressive history – largely unknown or ignored up until now – is brought to light for the first time and is placed right alongside some of Britain’s greatest castles.

The book, published by White Rose University Press, is the first time that findings from all of the major excavations at the castle – conducted in the 1920s, 50s and 90s – have been published in one place. It also contains the results of the most recent excavations of Sheffield Castle led

by Wessex Archaeology in 2018.

This new, definitive account reveals that Sheffield Castle played a major role in local, national and international affairs in the medieval era, and shaped the development and topography of modern day Sheffield.

Importantly, the book is available as an Open Access monograph, free to read online or download. The archives on which the book is based will also be freely available via the Archaeology Data Service. The team behind the book believe this material belongs to the people of the city and they are now able to share it not only with the local community but globally, bringing new audiences to this historical place.

Now the archaeologists are calling for the castle and Sheffield’s significance in the Middle Ages to contribute to a new identity for the city, which can be celebrated in the redevelopment of the Castlegate area of Sheffield city centre.

The team is working with Sheffield City Council to explore how best to use the city’s new-found medieval heritage in future regeneration.

Professor John Moreland from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Archaeology said: “Sheffield is seen by most people as the Steel

City, but what our research makes clear is that the city has a deep history that dates right back to the Middle Ages. Unfortunately since the castle was largely destroyed following the English Civil War and multiple developments have been built on its site ever since, this rich medieval history of the city has largely been forgotten or ignored.

“While we should certainly celebrate the city’s rich industrial heritage, our studies have revealed Sheffield’s importance on the national and international stage, well before the steel boom. This deep history reveals the persistence of Sheffield as a place of some importance over centuries.

“With the Castlegate area of the city being earmarked for redevelopment, we now have a once in a lifetime opportunity to use heritage as a resource to redefine Sheffield’s identity not just as a place with a rich industrial heritage but also as a city with a deep history reaching back into the Middle Ages. This rich heritage is the key to a regeneration of Castlegate which is both imaginative and ambitious.”

The book is published by White Rose University Press and is available to read online and to download for free. The Digital Archive can be accessed at: https://doi.org/10.5284/1074899.

This digital volume, along with a Print on Demand physical version, will be officially launched at an event on Saturday 26th September 2020 at the University of Sheffield’s Festival of the Mind. The event will be livestreamed so audiences can join from anywhere in the world.

Government Confirms Angling Can Continue

The Cabinet Office on behalf of the Government have confirmed that despite increased restrictions on group gatherings, Angling is amongst the sports that can still be enjoyed as a group activity due to the fact that “the relevant governing body [Angling Trust] has published guidance on how to do so safely.”

The Cabinet Office update published on the .Gov site yesterday then goes on to confirm the need to stick closely to this guidance and links to the Covid-19 section of the Angling Trust website.

This is further confirmation that Angling is free to continue and once again highlights the importance of the hard work that was done earlier this year, and continues to be done by our staff to update guidance and liaise with government.

Angling Trust CEO Jamie Cook said; “This latest statement is further vindication of the work and commitment the Angling Trust have put in to ensuring angling could not only safely return but remains a permitted and beneficial activity. In my limited time in post I’ve seen comments questioning our influence and status which I hope this statement addresses directly – what we have to ask ourselves as anglers of all denominations is where we would be without the ability to engage with and influence at government level? BLADES DOWN TO 10 EARLY ON AND STILL WITHOUT A POINT

A brave effort from 10-man United ended in defeat as Ezri Konsa’s second-half header secured a 1-0 success for Aston Villa.

The Blades played 78 minutes a man light after John Egan’s red card on 12 minutes, but a gutsy display ensured the hosts had to work exceptionally hard for the points which were claimed by Konsa’s close range header.

Even with 10-men United could have been in front as Chris Basham was felled in the area but John Lundstram’s penalty was saved by Villa stopper Emi Martinez.

Boss Chris Wilder handed striker Oli Burke a first United Premier League start as he made three changes to the side which opened the league season against Wolves.

Burke started in attack alongside David McGoldrick, both retained from the Carabao Cup tie against Burnley, with Billy Sharp and Oli McBurnie on the bench.

Sander Berge was selected in midfield for Ollie Norwood, whilst Egan took the captain’s armband.

Villa started brightly with John McGinn flashing Matty Cash’s deep cross over after just two minutes, whilst at the other end Konsa made a vital clearance from a low cross as McGoldrick waited to pounce.

Lundstram found himself in the book on 10 minutes for a late lunge on Jack Grealish but worse was to follow two minutes later. A long punt froward from Tyrone Mings had Ollie Watkins interested and in the ensuing tussle with Egan, the Irishman was adjudged to have denied a goalscoring opportunity and was given his marching orders.

With the extra man, Villa put United under pressure, but the Blades successfully defended a series of dangerous corners from Conor Hourihane as Aaron Ramsdale was well protected.

On 22 minutes a corner was worked to the edge of the area where Matt Targett played it to the left before it was eventually sent into the mix, but Douglas Luiz’s weak header landed into the grasp of Ramsdale.

On 30 minutes Jack O’Connell made a goal saving clearance under pressure inside the six-yard box as a low cross from Targett threatened the United goal.

McGoldrick was sacrificed for Ethan Ampadu as United readjusted following the red card and soon after came another big talking point. United produced a swift counter attack when Lundstram freed Burke down the left, he sprinted towards goal before cutting in from the left, sending Basham clear. As he was about to shoot, he was clipped by Targett for a clear penalty with the offender seeing yellow. Lundstram stepped forward but his effort from 12 yards was clawed away by Martinez diving to his right.

Villa not surprisingly dominated possession but United looked comfortable during the first 15 minutes of the second half as the hosts failed to test Ramsdale.

The Blades carried a threat on the counter and Berge almost found an opportunity after initially latching onto a pass into the area, but he couldn’t get the ball out of his feet in time under pressure to fire an attempt on goal.

On 63 minutes Villa netted what would prove to be the winner. A corner on the far side was flicked on by Mings and KONSA arrived with a well-placed header which nestled into the bottom corner.

The Blades reacted by bringing on Ben Osborn for John Fleck, whilst McBurnie also replaced Basham as Wilder went for broke.

Villa created numerous half chances but a stoic United kept them largely to arm’s length whilst pushing at the other end when Ampadu’s snapshot arrowed wide.

Inside the final 15 minutes Watkins, Grealish and Trézéguet went close for Villa but United remained a threat as Berge had a goalbound effort blocked.

With a minute to go a corner from Osborn was flicked on by McBurnie but Berge on the spin put an effort wide from a tight angle.

United continued knocking right to the end but Villa saw the game out despite a terrific effort from Wilder’s Blades.

Moore: We SUFC were worthy 2020/21 winners

Happy retirement to long-serving Mick Today marks the end of an era at Sheffield United as longserving club employee Mick Rooker completes his final day working for the club.

Mick leaves Bramall Lane to enjoy a well-earned retirement after first joining the club in 1987 working within the promotions department, leaving his current post as head of lottery after many successful years.

After his initial 12-year stint at the Lane he left for a brief period to work for Hull City in 1999, but quickly returned in 2000 to serve the Blades for a combined total of 32-and-ahalf years.

A popular member of staff, who is a well-known and muchloved figure amongst the Blades fanbase, the corridors of Bramall Lane aren’t likely to be the same without him.

After receiving a presentation at the club this afternoon from chief executive Stephen Bettis and manager Chris Wilder, Mick commented: “It was totally unexpected, so I am grateful to the club and staff for the presentation.

“I never thought I’d still be here when I first joined 33 years ago. It is an emotional day. I am 65 in October, so I have worked here over half my life.

“I have just felt privileged to have worked here and met so many good people, especially all the supporters because without them the club would be nothing.

“There have been many highlights but none more so than the last few years seeing the club do so well again under Chris.”

John Garrett, the club’s engagement manager, added: “Today marks Mick’s retirement after over 30 years of service to Sheffield United.

“Mick joined the Blades in 1987 and bar a brief holiday at Hull City, has been part of the United family ever since. A well-known and regarded contact with the Blades for many fans, he has seen several changes at Bramall Lane over his time on the staff and worked with every manager since Dave Bassett.

“We all wish him the happiest of retirements. Bramall Lane will be a much quieter place without him! Good luck Mick.”

It won’t be my story

After another solid performance from Tom Lees to help the Owls to their fourth clean sheet of the campaign, the post-match interview saw the topic of captaincy brought up and discussed at length.

Lees has spent a number of seasons as the Wednesday skipper – a role he said he was proud to hold.

Over the close season, one of many changes at the club was Barry Bannan assuming captaincy duties for the coming campaign.

“I just feel Baz is at that stage here at Sheffield Wednesday where I want to challenge him and that is the reason for him having that captain’s armband. We all know how good a player he is but it’s for him to go to that next step,” Garry Monk said during pre-season.

In an open and honest post-match interview, Lees spoke passionately about the situation, moving forward and giving his best for Sheffield Wednesday.

“The manager came to me in pre-season and we had a really long chat,” he said.

“When we came back for the restart I tried to come back with a clear mind, positive and refreshed. I wanted to come back and show I’m here to fight for my place.

“I think the manager recognised that and saw a difference in me. He had his reasons for the decision he wanted to make. I’m not the first person it’s happened to and I won’t be the last.

“I can either let what has happened be the story of me and my career and I can be the player that had the captaincy taken off him and never recovered.

“But it happens and I want to show people what I’ve done in my career and why I’ve played so many games - show why I was captain.”

Lees’ performances at the back in the early stages of this season have been exemplary, with his displays on the pitch more than supporting his words off it.

“The manager asked me ‘how do you think it will affect you?’, Lees continued.

“I said I was determined it comes out as a good story.

“Having the captaincy was something I was proud of and something you relish. But these things happen in football and it’s about how I react now and for the rest of the season.

“When I come into training it has no difference, nor when I’m playing.

“In our discussions, I told the gaffer what I thought and he equally told me what he thought.

“He wants to see the player he’s seen for the last few years and I agreed with him.”

Darren Moore believes his side were worthy winners as they took three points from a trip to The Valley.

The young Arsenal loanee scored a fantastic solo goal to put the icing on the cake of Rovers 3-1 victory over the Addicks at The Valley and says he hopes it will be the first of many.

“I didn’t have a lot of options on so I thought I had to do something to create a bit of space and get a shot off,” he said.

“I hadn’t really had a shot all game so I thought I’ve got to try and work something here so I tried it and I’m happy it came off.

“It’ll be the first of many hopefully.”

It was an impressive win for Darren Moore’s side against a team who had been plying their trade in the Championship a few months ago and John-Jules praised the team’s defensive efforts.

“Charlton started quick and we had to soak up all the pressure but when Madger got the goal it relieved a bit of pressure but I thought we defended well as a team,” he added.

“I thought from the start, as a team, we stuck to the game plan and I thought we played very good football today – we learned from last week and we got a result “Everyone’s buzzing but we’ve got to focus on the next game now.”

“They started the first five or ten minutes really strongly and then we had a spell just before half when we got the first goal.

Moore also had praise for youngster John-Jules who had worked hard throughout the game and, when his chance game, dispatched it excellently.

“It was great for Tyreece to get on the scoresheet,” he added.

“I know the ability he’s got and when you get him in those areas you want him to express himself the individual brilliance which he has got and he showed that today.”

Jed Wallace’s strike five minutes after half time gave the Lions victory, despite the home side creating the majority of the opportunities.

Despite the loss, the boss still believes there were positives to take from the game.

“I’m really proud of the lads and if we continue at those levels we’ll enjoy our season. I thought the lads gave us everything they could to go out and get us an equalising goal and it gives me great hope that we can have an exciting season,” Warne told www.themillers. co.uk.

“We put no end of crosses into their box which they defended well and probably didn’t get that cuttingedge chance in the second half to get something out of the game, which I think we deserved.

“Their goal was an unfortunate error, I thought it was two good teams out there and I was really pleased with how we played.

“Chieo (Chiedozie Ogbene) and Wes (Harding) were excellent down the right side and caused them problems. On another day we’d have won the game but to come away with nothing feels a bit harsh, but in this league one goal can often win it.”
