Region confirmed in ‘High’ category New restrictions for Sheffield & the region have been announced by the Government in a move to further prevent the spread of the virus across the city. The new measures will mean a ban on different households mixing and are expected to be introduced in Sheffield from Wednesday 14th Oct. However, Sheffield City Council advises that everyone in the city should follow the new restrictions immediately. The new, three-tier scheme has been introduced for the whole of England and Sheffield has been placed in the ‘high’ category. Sheffield has seen a sustained rise in cases over the last few weeks

and now has a case rate of around 400 per 100,000; this is too high and is the reason that Sheffield has been placed in the ‘high’ category.

In category ‘High’, the restrictions mean: • You must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any indoor setting unless you live with them or have formed a support bubble with them. This includes private homes, and any other indoor venues such as pubs and restaurants. • You also cannot meet indoors with people outside of Sheffield, unless exceptions* apply. • The ban on more than one

household mixing indoors also extends to hospitality, leisure and retail settings – so, people will not be able to socialise beyond their existing household such as visiting the pub, restaurant, leisure or entertainment venue. • Businesses selling food or drink on their premises are required to close between 10pm and 5am. • Businesses and venues selling food for consumption off the premises, can continue to do so after 10pm as long as this is through a delivery service, click-and-collect or drive-through. Orders must be made via phone, online or by post. • Existing arrangements for

contact between parents and children where the children do not live in the same household as their parents, or one of their parents will remain in place. • Friends and family can also still provide informal childcare for children under 14. This must be part of a regular childcare arrangement; and does not permit playdates, birthday parties etc. • To help contain the virus, all workers who can work effectively from home should do so over the winter. Where an employer, in consultation with their employee, judges an employee can carry out their normal duties from home they should do so.

In addition to these restrictions, the council also advise people in Sheffield: • Not to visit friends or family in care homes, other than in exceptional circumstances. Care homes should restrict visits to these circumstances. • To avoid the use of public transport when making a journey into, within or out of the areas affected. If you must do so – for work or attending school – you must wear a face covering. We ask you also to not share a car with those outside your household or support bubble. Community pitch re-opens at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park Major sporting names in the city, including Sheffield FC and Sheffield Eagles, are being joined by community and league teams in making use of the pitch which will reopened on Monday 12 October. The pitch is currently being operated by Leisure United, on behalf of Sheffield City Council, as an interim measure before Scarborough Group sign the lease for the pitch and other development sites on Sheffield Olympic

Legacy Park. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m delighted that Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park facilities are reopening to the public with Covid safety measures in place. “Exercise has played a key role in our physical and mental wellbeing throughout the pandemic and I’m pleased our communities will enjoy the benefits of some fantastic venues in the winter months. “We look forward to working with Scarborough Group to maintain and develop safe, accessible amenities.’ The 3G pitch, which opened three years ago, provides a

valued resource for people in the Attercliffe, Darnall and surrounding areas and is also used by Oasis Academy Don Valley and UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park for outdoor physical activity. Liam Claffey, General Manager for Sheffield Eagles, said: “It’s great to be using Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park again for our training sessions and we look forward to work starting on the stadium to ensure we can play at the facility in 2021.” Construction is due to start this autumn on the 3,900capacity stadium, which will sit along the west side of the pitch. Work on the £5m

Scarborough Group facility was due to start in March, but was delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic. When open next summer, the new stadium will feature 750 permanent seats as well as changing facilities, retail units, conferencing and office space. Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park was established in the wake of the 2012 London Games to deliver an Olympic legacy through the four themes of sport, community, economy and environment. The multi-million-pound park in the Attercliffe area of the city provides world-class sports, education, health and leisure facilities, new skills and jobs.

The Leadmill launches Makers Mill The Leadmill is thrilled to announce the launch of its brand new venture, “Makers Mill,” - a community for those that wish to make and learn new skills by the pro’s that Sheffield and the South Yorkshire region is home to. On Saturday 14th November, the first “Makers Mill” event will encompass an afternoon of crafty activities, a selection of drinks and relaxing music in a friendly, cosy atmosphere as the winter days draw in. This socially distanced event (where you are able to attend with members of your bubbles) will run from 2pm through to 6pm, and include three introductory sessions from some of our city’s most creative folk, who will be teaching the basic skills needed to take on what become your new favourite hobby. Each of the makers will

deliver a 45 minute session, and the ticket priced at £30 includes you with all the materials needed to make your item.

The exciting line up consists of: Oakleacrafts hosting “Macrame Feather Wallhangings” Beki, the founder of Oakleacrafts, has been delivering Art & Craft workshops in and around Sheffield over the past 20 years – taking her skills with her to Japan, Spain, Holland as well as England! Beki hosts workshops in venues with a sociable feel that create friendly & positive atmospheres. During Beki’s workshop, you will be guided to create your own macrame feather wallhanging, as well as a demonstration of further

hangings you could look to create after the session.

Helen Moyes Design hostin “Dry Needle Felted Landscape” Helen is a textile and mixed media artist in Sheffield, with a firm belief in the therapeutic nature of crafting and a passion for enabling others to be creative. At Makers Mill, Helen will be hosting a workshop where you will learn to blend wool and use the ‘stabbing action’ to create your design of a landscape. The felt image can then be mounted onto card or framed, and the skills learned will enable you to continue the craft at home! Laura Running With Scissors hosting “Arm Knitting” Laura is a qualified teacher and combines her love of crafting with sharing skills with others.

Laura has lead Running With Scissors since 2009, and is Sheffield’s longest established craft collective that offers expert tuition to those willing to learn! At our first edition of Makers Mill, Laura will be hosting an Arm Knitting class, which is a method of using big, bold stitches with only your hands! It can be used to make shawls, scarves and snoods – keeping you warm and cosy during the winter months!

Tickets will cost £30 per person and this includes all 3 crafty sessions and the materials! Times will run from 2pm through to 6pm with breaks. They’ll have snacks, drinks, music and the venue set up so that you are warm, relaxed and cosy whilst learning some new tricks alongside others. Creating events has certainly been a challenge, but The

Leadmill hopes that people can enjoy activities such as Makers Mill feeling completely comfortable and safe. They ask for everybody’s support in our endeavours to keep entertainment options as open as possible to everybody - whilst they continue to programme Comedy events, Drag shows, Listening Parties,

My family branded me as a failure, then I invented an invisibility cloak. If only they could see me now... Did you hear about the cannibalistic lion? He swallowed his pride. Scared the postman today by going to the door completely naked. I’m not sure what scared him more, my naked body or the fact that I knew where he lived. Today I thought of a color that doesn’t exist... but then I realized it was just a pigment of my imagination. Viking warrior Rudolph the red and his wife were on a stroll. Rudolph the red looked up at the sky and said: “We should hurry up, there is a storm coming”. So his wife asked: “How do you know?” And he replied... “Rudolph the red knows rain dear.” All day I drill holes in metal and bolt them together. At first it’s boring, then it’s riveting. STANNINGTON BANDS LOSING REHEARSAL ROOM Stannington Brass Band and Stannington Training Band are hoping to save their rehearsal room with the support of the community. Locally based in Knowle Top Church Hall, Stannington for 10 years, the bands are threatened with losing their rehearsal space when the church and hall are put up for sale. Recently, a decision was reluctantly taken to cease worship in the iconic Methodist chapel due to a dwindling congregation and this will result in the building and adjoining hall being put up for sale. The building has been a striking landmark in Stannington since 1871 and is well-loved by the community for school nativities, band concerts, choir rehearsals and many more activities. The hall is regularly in use not only by the bands, but also a Breakfast/After School Club, hand

bell ringers and has been in demand for keep fit, coffee mornings and party bookings. A spokesperson for the band said “It would be a tragic loss to the band, other user groups and to the community as a whole if these buildings are lost to commercial enterprises such as flats. We have always been made welcome in our base in the heart of the village and would love to remain here but we can’t do this without the backing of others. We are appealing for help to keep this facility in the hands of the community and are asking people to contact us so we can

England has the dirtiest rivers in Europe

England’s rivers are the dirtiest in Europe, Government data reveals. A report released last month shows not a single river, lake or coastal water in the country is rated as chemically ‘good’. This figure has plummeted from 97 per cent in 2016, when information was last published, though testing methods are now more rigorous. The data also showed just 16 per cent of the country’s waterways are classed as meeting the separate ‘good ecological status’ for plants and wildlife, a figure that has remained unchanged since 2016.

This is shameful,” said Stuart Singleton-White, the Angling Trust’s head of campaigns. “Our rivers are officially the dirtiest in Europe.” Across Europe, 40 per cent of surface water bodies are in good health. The figures for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are 65.7, 64 and 31.3 per cent, respectively. “Water quality has plateaued since 2016, which isn’t good enough,” admitted Environment Agency chair Emma Howard Boyd. The agency blames sewage discharge from water companies and chemical run-off from industry and farming. Stuart Singleton-White added: “We have to see funding to clean up our environment massively increased. “We need regulators who can do their job properly and we must hold polluters to account. “We can’t wait, our fish can’t wait, our rivers can’t wait.”

We go the extra mile to ensure you have a great holiday. We are a family run business offering Motorhome Hire in Yorkshire. Where luxury Motorhome Hire and value go hand-in-hand.

Momentum shifts and supporters

While the Championship had a fixture-free weekend, manager Garry Monk took time to evaluate the differences and on-field challenges of playing behind closed doors. As more concerns grow nationwide over the pandemic, empty football stadiums continue to present huge hurdles for the clubs. Focusing specifically on the team and performance, Monk has pinpointed where he feels the biggest differences come on a matchday. Having completed the end of the 2019/20 season behind closed doors and now seven games played in all competitions this season, the Wednesday boss has learned a lot from these unusual first team fixture settings.

More international action for several Blades Several United players were involved for their respective countries last weekend. Enda Stevens and Ethan Ampadu played 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland and Wales respectively in a goalless draw at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Rhys Norrington-Davies was again an unused substitute for Wales, whilst John Egan and David McGoldrick didn’t feature for Stephen Kenny’s side. John Fleck started in the heart of Scotland’s midfield as they overcame Slovakia at Hampden Park, with Oli McBurnie replacing match winner Lydon Dykes on 72 minutes. Meanwhile, Sander Berge again played a full game for Norway as Erling Haaland’s hat-trick helped them impressively beat Romania 4-0 in Oslo.

He said: “What I’ve noticed about these games is that they are played at a level of tempo and level of intensity you’d still expect, but it’s the moments of momentum that is the biggest difference. “You don’t have that crowd effect there, whether that be momentum you build when you’re on top or momentum where you’ve been behind and maybe got something, a goal back for example, and that’s when the crowd would normally kick in. “So I’ve noticed the momentum shifts aren’t there as much, or sustained as long because they haven’t got that crowd influence. “Fans play such a huge part in shifting momentum, it’s the biggest thing I’ve noticed and the game is missing it. There is no doubt about it, it is not football as we know and love. “I enjoy it in front of a crowd with that pressure on me, for your team to perform, I miss that pressure both good and bad.” With no supporters inside Hillsborough and away from home, a new feature supporters and journalists have full access too are the voices from the bench. Instructions and encouragement can clearly be heard from Monk and his staff all throughout each game, adding a completely new element to the viewing experience.

“Everyone is trying to make the best of it but it we are missing the support,” he continued. “We have got quite a noisy bench this year! It’s something we have talked about, the players themselves, the staff, the substitutes, to make sure we have a bit of spirit about us, not just loud for the sake of being loud. Encourage and push from the sidelines, everyone together.”

Fixture BLADES changes for GAMES AVAILABLE TO Blades WATCH ON PAY PER VIEW The Premier League last week confirmed all fixtures until the end of October will continue to be made available to fans to watch live in the UK. Under these new arrangements, the current live match selections will remain in place and will be broadcast as normal. In addition, the five matches per round not already selected will be made available to supporters on a pay-per-view basis, accessed via BT Sport Box Office and Sky Sports Box Office platforms at a cost of £15 per game. Clubs today agreed this interim solution to enable all fans to continue to watch their teams live. The Premier League has worked closely with Sky Sports and BT Sport to enable this arrangement and is grateful for their support. The agreement will be regularly reviewed in consultation with clubs and in line with any decisions made by Government regarding the return of spectators to stadiums. Football is not the same without supporters at matches. The Premier League and our clubs remain committed to the safe return of fans as soon as possible.

Obituary Richie Barker

Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of our former assistant manager Richie Barker, aged 80. Richie joined the Owls as number two to Ron Atkinson in February 1989, moving to Hillsborough from Luton. He was a major influence as Atkinson’s side bounced back from an unlikely top flight relegation in 1990 to win immediate promotion a year later, whilst lifting the League Cup and playing a hugely entertaining brand of football along the way. Richie assisted Atkinson’s successor Trevor Francis for Wednesday before switching to a role of Director of Football Development. He departed S6 to link up with Francis at Birmingham in 1996. Prior to his coaching career, the Loughborough product played for Derby, Notts County and Peterborough. After injury forced an early retirement on the field, he would move off it to manage Shrewsbury, Stoke, Notts County, Ethnikos Piraeus (Greece), Zamalek (Egypt) and West Brom. Our thoughts are with Richie’s family and friends at this difficult time.

United's Premier League fixture with Fulham will be televised live on BT Sport. The game against Scott Parker's side, originally scheduled on Saturday 17th October, will now be played on Sunday 18th October with a 12noon kick-off. Additionally, the kick-off time for United's trip to Premier League champions Liverpool has changed. The game will take place on Saturday 24th October, but will kick-off at 8pm and will be shown on Sky Sports Box Office.

John-Jules wins Gomes named Rovers September Sky Bet League 2020/21 Goal of the Month One player of the Tyreece John-Jules’ stunning solo effort month

Neil Redfearn named LMA Manager of the Month Sheffield United Women head coach Neil Redfearn has been named LMA Manager of the Month in the FA Women’s Championship for September. Redfearn, who took over in August, led his new side to two wins a draw during his first month in charge, leaving the Blades sat top of the table come the end of the month. A 4-1 win at London City Lionesses kicked off the season in style thanks to two goals each from Jade Pennock and Katie Wilkinson, giving the former Doncaster Rovers Belles and Liverpool manager the perfect start. A week later, a hard-fought 2-2 draw at home to fully professional outfit Leicester City signalled the Blades’ intent as being a serious challenger once again this season, with new signing Mel Johnson finding the net twice in the team’s first game back at the Technique Stadium. That was followed up by a 4-0 win at home to London Bees, with Johnson and Wilkinson both again scoring two each and goalkeeper Fran Kitching earning her first clean sheet of the season. Redfearn, whose side return to league action with a trip to Coventry United this Sunday, credits a team effort to have put a good run of form together in a short amount of time. “I’m really pleased for everybody involved with the squad, not just me, all the players and staff. I think it’s an acknowledgement of everyone’s hard work and dedication during the first month of the season.”

against Charlton Athletic has been voted Rovers (August and) September Goal of the Month. The Arsenal loanee got off the mark for Rovers in spectacular style at The Valley. He squared up his man, nutmegged him and then smashed the ball into the roof of the net. John-Jules’ goal received more than 50% of the vote with Madger Gomes’ goal in the same match coming second and Joe Wright’s goal against Bristol Rovers in third.

Warne confirms lengthy lay-off for Chieo Rotherham United manager Paul Warne has confirmed that winger Chiedozie Ogbene will be out for at least four months after undergoing surgery on a knee injury. Chieo was handed a setback during training prior to the Millers’ Sky Bet Championship clash with Huddersfield Town last Saturday, going under the knife on Monday. The surgery has been successful in repairing the damage to the 23-year-olds cartilage, which should mean he will have no further complications further on in his career. Unfortunately though, it now means that the fans’-favourite is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with manager Paul Warne confirming he won’t be pulling on a Millers’ shirt this side of the New Year. “He won’t return for us for a minimum of four months and that is without any problems. We won’t be seeing him this side of the New Year that is for sure,” Warne told www.themillers. co.uk. “They’ve managed to repair his cartilage which is good news for Chieo in the long-term, however it means that he is out longer now. “We all sent him a video message before his operation on Monday, wishing him the best of luck. He sent me a text yesterday thanking everyone for their support. “It’s really sad and I know its next man up but he is one of our most influential players. He gets us up the pitch and creates mayhem. “It’s disappointing for him, but we’re all here for him to help him through it. The physios and fitness coaches are brilliant here so he’ll come back. Mental attitude is essential in life and he’s definitely got a really positive one.” Due to the nature of Chieo’s injury, Warne admits that he may need to dip his toes into the transfer market, before the close of the window on Friday 16th October. The manager had hinted that another option out wide was on his radar but it seems this has now intensified following this setback. Warne though has stressed that anyone he brings to the AESSEAL New York Stadium has to be able to come in and improve his side. “There is no point signing someone who is no good and not going to play, it has to be someone who improves us, so that’s what we’re trying to do now,” Warne explained. “At this moment in time it looks like we either have to get another winger in or find a different way to play because right now we don’t have an out and out right-winger in. “I’ve said in previous press conferences that we needed some back-up for Chieo and now he is not there, we might have to find a different way to play if we can’t find a suitable candidate to join us.”

Madger Gomes has been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month for September. The elegant Spaniard strode through opposing defences carrying the ball forward at will in September and scoring a goal in every game. His goals were easy on the eye too – a left-footed curler, a long-range effort and a stinging strike. Gomes said: “I’ve been playing regularly and working hard to help the team, and every time I wear the shirt I give my best wherever the manager needs me. “I think the goals have been a result of playing with more confidence, I know the league better now and have a better reading of the game. “I’ve managed to work myself into space to receive the ball in good areas, and that’s when I’ve been able to get my shots away.” Darren Moore added: “We’re all delighted for Madger. He’s had an excellent start to the season and added goals to his game which has been great for both him and the team. “It’s wonderful for him to have been recognised like this and it’s a testament to the way he and the team have started the season.” Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman added: “When you score a goal from midfield in every game of a calendar month, it should come as little wonder when the accolades come swiftly after. “Madger Gomes was a revelation for Rovers in September and richly deserves this award. “The Spaniard produced some wonderful strikes for Doncaster, with each giving the sense that it was a real shame there were no fans in the ground to fully appreciate his outstanding performances.” Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies said: “Madger Gomes was in outstanding form for Doncaster during September. “The Spanish midfielder scored a goal in every game as he helped Rovers to two wins and a draw. “Sky Bet rated Rovers rated as a mid-table outfit before the season started, but after some eyecatching performances from Gomes in particular we have gradually been increasing their rating each week and if they can finish where they are now in the Play-Off places, this would represent a very good season for Darren Moore’s team. They are 2/1 to finish in the top six from 4/1 a month ago.”
