Tier Three lockdown announced in S. Yorkshire After days of speculation and negotiations between the regions politicians and Westminster, Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis has announced Sheffield and South Yorkshire have been moved into Tier Three lockdown. Speaking on Twitter, he said: “Our Council leaders and I have secured £41m funding from Govt to support our people and businesses as we move to Tier 3. We’ve taken action

to protect both lives and livelihoods as pressure increases on our #NHS. The new rules start at 0001 on Sat 24 Oct.” The total funding available to South Yorkshire agreed with Government for the new restrictions is £41m, including £30m to support the region’s businesses, and £11m for local authorities to support public health measures such as Test and Trace to stop the spread of the virus.

The restrictions mean: • People must not socialise with anybody they do not live with, or have formed a support bubble with, in any indoor setting or in any private garden or at most outdoor hospitality venues and ticketed events • People must not socialise in a group of more than 6 in an outdoor public space such as a park or beach, the countryside, a public garden or a sports venue

• All pubs and bars must close, unless they are serving substantial meals • People should try to avoid travelling outside the Very High alert level or entering a Very High alert level area, other than for work, education or for caring responsibilities or to travel through as part of a longer journey • Residents should avoid staying overnight in another part of the UK, and others should avoid staying overnight in the

Very High alert area

In addition, the following restrictions will also apply in South Yorkshire: • Additional closures will include: Betting shops, adult gaming centres, casinos and soft play centres. • Gym classes will not be allowed and social distancing guidelines should be followed between people from different households (but gyms will remain open).

The Sheffield 5-piece also received their first BRIT Award nomination for ‘Best Group’ this year. Bring Me The Horizon has sold over 4 million albums globally to date, played sold-out shows in over 40 countries and wowed a traditionally non-rock crowd at

News, Information and Advice new council fund to support local groups

Are you part of a local group or charity supporting victims of the Covid 19 epidemic locally? If so you can take advantage of funding to help in your work. Sheffield City Council have this week announced the launch of the Community COVID-19 Response Fund. This short-term funding is designed to support the Voluntary and Community Sector in their work around preventing the spread of COVID19, testing and outbreak management and supporting people to isolate. Councillor Paul Wood, Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety at Sheffield City Council, said: “We are pleased to launch the Voluntary and Community Sector Covid-19 Response Fund. This is offered in recognition of the outstanding efforts of our local Voluntary, Community and Faith sector organisations in helping communities in Covid19 prevention messaging and encouraging people to get a test and to isolate. Their work continues to be highly valued in combating the virus and preventing transmission in our communities and citywide. With this fund, we are in a position to support the monumental efforts made to communicate with the hardest to reach in our communities. food charities look for local volunteers Two charities providing vital food to people hit by the Covid-19 pandemic are appealing for people across South Yorkshire to help support the UK’s biggest food collection this Christmas. From Thursday, November 19 until Saturday, November 21 charities FareShare and the Trussell Trust will be collecting food in Tesco stores across the UK and Northern Ireland during the annual pre-Christmas Tesco Food Collection. The need for food to help the food banks and community groups which the two charities support is more vital than ever this year given the pressures caused by Covid-19. FareShare are looking for people to volunteer at donation points in store whilst the Trussell Trust is looking for social media volunteers to share shopping lists on social media to encourage people to donate. During the collection customers are encouraged to donate long-life food to help food banks and community groups support people this Christmas. Tesco will top up customer donations by 20% in cash to aid the two charities in their work. Last year, 3million meals were collected as part of the Tesco Food Collection, and since its launch in 2012, more than 76 million meals have been donated to the two charities by generous Tesco customers. The volunteers are needed to encourage shoppers to leave their donations in the collection point at the front of stores, with shoppers more likely to donate if volunteers are present. Foodbanks in the Trussell Trust’s network are expecting to give out six emergency food parcels every minute this winter. Laura Chalmers, Trussell Trust’s Regional Manager in Yorkshire, said: “A crisis can often bring out the best in people, and we have been overwhelmed by the support the UK has shown towards food banks in light of the coronavirus outbreak. As we look to the one of the busiest times of the year for food banks in our network, we would be so grateful if people can share shopping lists of their local food bank’s most-needed items on their social media to encourage friends and family to donate. Together we can make a difference and ensure that food banks are able to help people in crisis this winter.”

Meanwhile FareShare has tripled the amount of food it has been providing since the start of the pandemic and will be supplying food to 11,000 front-line charities and community groups supporting people this winter. FareShare’s Chief Executive for Yorkshire, Gareth Batty, said: “We know that many people have already fallen victim to the economic impact of the pandemic and thousands more are at risk of losing their jobs and livelihoods. We have seen a huge increase in people turning to their local grassroots community groups for support and demand for food is more than double pre-pandemic levels. We would be hugely grateful to anyone who is able to volunteer this year to encourage more shoppers to donate much needed ambient food to those who need it most.” Volunteers will need to adhere to the Covid19 rules in place in the store and locally when they participate. People interested in volunteering can find out more and sign up at https://fareshare.org.uk/foodcollection About the Trussell Trust: • We’re here to end the need for food banks in UK. • We support a UK-wide network of more than 1,200 food bank centres and together we provide emergency food and support to people locked in poverty, and campaign for change to end the need for food banks in the UK. • Our most recent figures for the number of emergency food supplies provided by our network: www.trusselltrust.org/news-andblog/latest-stats/ You can read more about our work at www.trusselltrust.org About FareShare FareShare is the UK’s largest food redistribution charity, with 23 Regional Centres across the country. It takes food from the food industry that can’t be sold in shops, either because of packaging errors or a short shelf life. That food, which is the same as the food you’d eat at home, is then redistributed through a network of 11,000 frontline organisations, across the UK such as homeless hostels, school breakfast clubs, domestic violence refuges, older people’s lunch clubs, food banks and hospices. FareShare provides enough food to create more than a million meals for vulnerable people every week.

yorkshire legend harry gration announces his retirement BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration MBE has decided to leave the broadcaster after 42 years. Readers of the Mercury may remember Harry being involved with various events over the years, including the presenting of the Mercury Awards on more than one occasion. The legendary presenter of BBC One’s Yorkshire bulletins will have his last evening on the iconic red sofa on Wednesday, October 21. Harry joined the BBC in 1978 and has presented Look North since 1982. The Director of BBC England, Helen Thomas, said Harry was a “broadcasting legend”, adding: “He is a true professional, a Yorkshire treasure and it has been a privilege to work alongside him.” Harry said: “For the past four decades, it’s been a privilege to meet the people of the county I love. Make no mistake, these good folk are the heartbeat of the programme. I’ve worked with the best of the best and leave Look North in the good hands of Amy and the team, although I don’t know how Paul Hudson is going to cope without me checking his

forecasts! Seriously though, I’ll miss my good old mate. I’m looking forward to some new broadcasting adventures and some special time with my family and a certain 1 year old!” Harry, who is Yorkshire born and bred, began filing match reports for the BBC while working as a history teacher in the mid ‘70s. He joined BBC Radio Leeds as Sports Editor in 1978, before going on to commentate on the Olympics and Paralympics and present ionic shows such as Grandstand, Sportsnight and even Match of the Day. He has covered nine Olympic Games for the BBC and won two Royal Television Society awards for his sports documentaries: ‘White Rose in Africa’ and ‘Dickie Bird: A Rare Species’. He won the prestigious RTS Best Presenter award twice. Many will remember Harry fondly for his inspiring charity work, which saw him undertake several exhausting challenges for BBC Children in Need and BBC Sport Relief, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for good causes. These included pushing a sofa around Yorkshire and walking 120 miles with one leg strapped to weather presenter Paul

Hudson. Harry continued: “I’ve interviewed every Prime Minister since Margaret Thatcher, covered every major Look North story even at the expense of my holidays, and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I’ve always lived the story. Horrendous events such as the devastating news of Jo Cox’s death, the disastrous floods of recent times, the Bradford Riots, Hillsborough, have always affected me. They were always an assault on my county. Stand-out moments include raising over £800,000 on a tandem, pushing a sofa and being tied to Paul: three challenges my body will never forget! And then to be awarded an MBE for Services to Broadcasting. I know I served each and every one of you.” Amy was among those who praised Harry for a long and distinguished BBC career. She said: “It has been an absolute honour to share the red sofa with Harry for the past seven years: a Yorkshire legend, a mentor and a dear friend. Look North is a family and Harry has been at the heart of it for so long. He will be missed by the whole team and our loyal viewers.”

Angling Trust launches major campaign to end pollution of our waters The Angling Trust last week launched a major campaign to halt the decline in Britain’s waters and protect the environment for future generations. With every water body in England assessed against the Water Framework standard failing, our rivers, lakes and coastal waters are in crisis with pollution from farming, sewage, plastics and litter the main cause. Our Anglers Against Pollution campaign aims to give anglers a voice in ensuring this Government lives up to its rhetoric on improving our environment and meets its own legal responsibilities. The campaign calls for: • Better monitoring of our waters • Proper enforcement of existing laws and regulations • Stricter punishments against polluters that discourages them from polluting again • A review of existing laws to help close loopholes Together with climate change, pollution in rivers, lakes and estuaries is having a catastrophic effect on plants and wildlife – and the biggest threat is in freshwater species. A recent WWF Living Planet Report estimated an 84 per cent loss in freshwater biodiversity. Combined sewage overflows (CSOs) are meant to only allow water companies to pump raw sewage into our rivers in exceptional circumstances. Yet in 2019, 6,508 CSOs released untreated sewage into our rivers 204,134 times. In total, they discharged raw sewage for 1.53 million hours across nine water companies. Exceptional circumstances? At the same time, the Environment Agency seemed to be turning a blind eye. Its own river quality monitoring programme reduced the number of samples taken by over a quarter in the last five years, from 126,723 in 2014 to 94,408 in 2019. And the number of places it took those sample from was reduced from 17,970 to 14,498. Worryingly, the

number of river habitat surveys undertaken by the Agency crashed from 312 in 2014 to just eight in 2019. It is not only the monitoring of rivers that are suffering. Enforcement of the rules has been devastated, too. A good example is a group of regulations called the Farming Rules for Water. Introduced in 2018, these rules require good farming practice so that farmers manage their land both to avoid water pollution and to benefit their business. Yet due to a lack of resources, the Environment Agency cannot enforce these rules properly. With such few staff, it is estimated each farm in England is likely to get a visit to check they are following the rules about once every 100 years. The Angling Trust is calling on anglers to support Anglers Against Pollution by signing their petition at anglingtrust.net/get-involved/anglers-againstpollution

We’ve been very smart

Garry Monk summed up a ‘smart’ summer window for the Owls following the transfer deadline last week. Wednesday made two additions on Friday, with Jack Marriott and Aden Flint joining on seasonlong loans ahead of the deadline and the latter was straight in the side to face Birmingham on Saturday. Marriot meanwhile made his debut from the bench. Monk said: “Aden came into the side at the last second and it allowed us to have a right-footed player on that side of the defence. “He’s a fit boy, he’s done all pre-season and played Under-23s games. He helped with our balance on the right side. “Credit to him, he knows what is expected straight away and he’s come in and delivered a solid performance.” The Owls added nine players to their roster over the transfer window and the manager was pleased with the new recruits.

LATE SHARP PENALTY GIVES BLADES FIRST POINT OF THE SEASON Billy Sharp’s late penalty earnt United a first Premier League point of the season against Fulham at Bramall Lane on Sunday. Ademola Lookman had given the visitors a secondhalf lead, before referee Andre Marriner awarded the Blades a spot-kick having consulted with VAR and looked at his pitchside monitor. Both sides had chances to win it, after Aleksander Mitrović had earlier missed from twelve yards. For the clash against the Cottagers, boss Wilder made three changes with Lowe handed his Premier League debut. McBurnie and Norwood were also recalled, as Robinson, Osborn and Burke dropped to the bench. Egan was cleared to play and captained the side, as Brewster was also named amongst the substitutes. There was some early concern for the Blades as Lowe suffered a heavy collision with Loftus-Cheek, but thankfully he got to his feet and was able to continue. Fulham enjoyed plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges and Ramsdale was called

He added: “We needed that strengthening, it’s credit to the club and the chairman, I think we’ve been very smart. “Transition is an ongoing thing, season on season, and to have got the squad where we have I’m very pleased. “Now we have to make the team gel whilst also trying to win games. I’m sure the longer we spend together the better we’ll get, and in the meantime we’ll try to find a way to get points on the board

and Saturday was an example of that. “We’ve had help from the club to make this transition and bring that spirit. The type of players we’ve brought in add quality but also the type of person we need. “We’re not always going to get it right, but we will always fight and show commitment. That shirt needs to be worn to represent our fans properly and I think the lads are doing that.”

Rhys makes winning senior debut Rhys Norrington-Davies made his senior debut for Wales as Ryan Giggs side impressively overcame Bulgaria on last week. Chelsea loanee Ethan Ampadu also completed 90 minutes in Sofia, as Wales made it four points from a possible six during the current round of Nations League fixtures. For Scotland, Oli McBurnie was a second-half substitute as Steve Clarke’s men overcame the Czech Republic at Hampden Park thanks to Ryan Fraser’s early strike, as the Tartan Army made it consecutive wins following the weekend success over Slovakia. Meanwhile, Enda Stevens played a full game for the Republic of Ireland against Finland in Helsinki, as did Sander Berge for Norway in their victory over Northern Ireland in Oslo.

into the action to deny Cairney at the expense of a corner. In response, United pressed high and won the ball back on a couple of occasions, with Lundstram forcing Areola to tip over with an effort from the edge of the area. That corner was only partially cleared and Adarabioyo had to make a vital interception to deny McBurnie at the near post. From a second corner, Basham eventually found space down the right having got the better of Aina, but McBurnie couldn’t direct his header on target with Areola rooted to the spot. United were now enjoying more possession and more importantly territory. Berge broke down the right and after Ream couldn’t clear, Basham slid an effort just wide of the far post. On 18 minutes, Lowe was forced off following the aforementioned clash early on and he was replaced by Robinson, with Stevens reverting to wing-back. Anguissa was the first player to be carded for a cynical foul on Lundstram as United threatened to counter having won the ball in midfield. Another quick break saw McGoldrick release Stevens and he drew a low save from a diving Areola. As the half hour approached it was United continuing to force the issue. Berge powered clear down the right after robbed Cairney and from Basham’s cross Areola made a reflex save to deny McBurnie with a near post header. The Norwegian midfielder was seeing plenty of the ball and having advanced forward following Norwood’s ball forward, he drew another save from Areola. Then, from the left, Robinson’s long throw evaded everyone as it went across the face of goal. Eight minutes before half-time, the Blades had the ball in the net, as Norwood spit the defence to find

Berge who fired across the six-yard box where it was diverted home, but following a brief check for offside the goal was disallowed. At the other end, Anguissa won a free-kick in a dangerous position and Mitrović took aim, but Ramsdale was equal to his powerfully stuck effort and that was the last action of note. United were quickly out of the blocks in the second half and McBurnie had an header saved by Areola from Baldock’s cross, but the assistant referee flagged for offside following the save been made. But in response Fulham broke at pace and Ramsdale had to make a quick recovery to deny Lookman having initially fumbled Cavaleiro’s cross from the right. On 57 minutes, the Blades survived a huge scare. Robinson was penalised for handball from Cairney’s corner, but from the penalty spot, Mitrović fired over the bar. Then, referee Marriner hampered a retreating Norwood as Fulham broke, but Robinson atoned for his earlier mistake by clearing Cavaleiro’s attempted pass across the face of goal. Brewster was introduced for his debut, replacing McGoldrick, but it was Fulham who continued to break with purpose and Egan was ideally placed

to avert danger from Cairney’s ball before Baldock cleared. But on 77 minutes, the game did swing in the visitors favour as LOOKMAN beat Berge, got a fortunate bounce in a challenge with Basham before rifling into the top corner past Ramsdale. Moments later, United’s goalkeeper kept them in the game, denying Mitrović from Anguissa’s pull back. Wilder threw SHARP on, replacing Basham, before Cavaleiro was booked for hauling down Stevens on the left and from the resulting freekick, United were awarded a penalty following a consultation with VAR and the pitchside monitor, as Mitrović was adjudged to have fouled Robinson after Areola had dropped Norwood’s set-piece. United’s number ten did the rest from the spot. United were now looking for the winner and Sharp was fractionally offside as he forced Areola to save with his legs from Berge’s cross, as five minutes added time were signalled. Fulham won two corners in quick succession, with Lookman and then Lemina trying their luck with shots from distance, before Mitrović headed wide at the near post from Lookman’s cross and of the far post from Cairney’s delivery. But in the end, the spoils were shared.

We can get stronger and stronger The Owls emerged from Birmingham with a vital three points and Garry Monk had nothing but praise for his team. Blues were dominated by Wednesday, who on another day would have undoubtedly increased the 1-0 scoreline but Barry Bannan’s penalty just after half time proved sufficient for the win. Monk said: “I’m just proud of that performance, we’ve dominated that game against a good side in Birmingham. “We got better and better as the game went on and I believe we can get stronger and stronger as the season goes on. “We had a game plan today hat the players executed very well and credit to them. “The togetherness they are showing is testament to what we are trying to achieve because we have been aware from day one of the challenge we face this season. “We have our targets, the players know that and that’s three more points towards that target.”

A fresh start Joost van Aken is enjoying a ‘fresh start’ at Sheffield Wednesday following a positive beginning to the campaign for the Dutchman. The defender enjoyed a loan spell in Germany with Osnabrück during the last campaign and has returned to S6 raring to go, contributing to two clean sheets from four league games. The 26-year-old said: “It’s been great. It’s a fresh start and I’ve had to show myself and I still need to keep doing that. “I spoke with the manager at the end of my season in Germany. He said everyone will get a fair chance at the beginning and that was important for me. “You never know how it will go when you come back. I’ve seen other foreign defenders who need time to adapt to the league and I needed that too. “I had an ankle injury which didn’t help as well but this is how it is, you can never plan anything in football, but now after a full season in Germany I have a positive feeling.” The Dutchman says he always intended to come back and fight for his place at Hillsborough, with this outlook shaping his decision on where to go on loan. He added: “I had a chance to go on loan to Holland, but I had Sheffield Wednesday in my mind and I knew the football in Germany was more similar to England. “I never gave up on the Sheffield Wednesday part of my career. In football, things can change quickly, I had to make a decision to go on loan to develop. “I think it’s difficult to say about yourself, but from my own point of view after the first few games I think I’ve been decent. “Playing with Tom Lees and Dom Iorfa, they both have really good quality and experience in the Championship. Having these two next to me helps me as a player. “I’ve done my job and it’s been important for me to show what I can do. But now I still need to show every week the best of myself and fight to be in the team.“

Rotherham United assistant manager Richie Barker admitted that the four big moments in the game were pivotal, as he oversaw his side agonisingly defeated 2-1 by Norwich City on Saturday. Another colossal effort from the AESSEAL New York Stadium outfit was cruelly punished by the Canaries, who snatched all three points in South Yorkshire through Jordan Hugill’s stoppage time spot kick. It had been the Millers who had made the early running in what would prove to be an enthralling endto-end second tier affair with Freddie Ladapo drawing first blood on two minutes. Michael Ihiekwe’s was desperately unlucky to turn a Max Aarons cross into his own goal before Angus MacDonald saw red for a challenge on Oliver Skipp, which made life tough for the 10-man Millers. Speaking after the game, Barker praised his team’s endeavour and admitted that the big events in the game just didn’t go for the Millers. “I’m immensely proud. We had a fantastic work ethic, were excellent on the ball, created opportunities and stuck to the game plan,” he explained. “But, in the end, it was the four key of: us miss a penalty, give a penalty away, score an own goal and have a man sent off. You can be as organised, as athletic and as good on the ball as you like but once you mention those four key points – it doesn’t matter who you’re playing against, let alone an ex-Premier League side. “Freddie’s not missed the penalty on purpose, Icky (Michael Ihiekwe) hasn’t scored an own goal on purpose and Angus has had a rush of blood. I think we needed a lot of things to go for us to get a result today. The lads did what we asked of them but, unfortunately, those things didn’t go for us. “When we spoke at half time, we could have been 3-1 up, 3-1 down or it could have been 3-3! I suppose my biggest regret is that there wasn’t a packed crowd to watch it because I thought we played some excellent stuff – as did they, which is expected. I just thought it would have been a really entertaining game to watch. The lack of people here to witness it is a real shame.” Ladapo helped himself to a first Sky Bet Championship goal in Rotherham United colours to set the Millers on their way but, whilst commending his striker for taking the opportunity, Barker was keen to point to the team effort which resulted in the goal. “I’m pleased for him (Freddie) but I was more pleased with the fact that it (the goal) came from something we’d worked on. About who was going to release and who was going to go and press. That plan’s been on the board since Monday morning. For us to do that and score a goal from it after three minutes, is pleasing. Hopefully that will give him confidence to keep it going.” Having had to deal with the heartbreak of conceding a similarly late goal in the recent game with Huddersfield Town, Barker continued to explain that the Millers’ overall start to life in the second tier has seen plenty of positives noted. “We’ve conceded five goals in five games, which is two penalties, two own goals and a mistake from Icky against Millwall. It’s disappointing,” he added. “Flo didn’t do it on purpose as he didn’t know he was there. I’m sure most people would have taken a point with five minutes to go having played that long with ten men.” The assistant boss concluded by talking about a matchday without the physical presence of Paul Warne, who he explains has been in constant touch with the side whilst self-isolating. “We must have about five Zoom meetings with him a day. “We had one before the game, at half time and just after the game. Obviously, we’re a major senior member of staff down but he was on the phone to Andy Warrington throughout the game. As can normally happen, you have internet or technical issues but, in fairness, he said he had trust in his staff. I’m gutted for him because he’s a Norwich fan and from Norfolk. “I asked the players to do it for him before the game, because of how much it meant to him and his family.”

Moore: Resilience was most pleasing aspect

Darren Moore was delighted with the three points and clean sheet at Fratton Park, praising his side’s workrate over the 90 minutes. Rovers had looked to be heading towards a goalless draw with Portsmouth but a moment of magic from Reece James saw him claim a late winner and give his team the three points. “The most pleasing aspect was the resilience the squad showed,” said Moore. “They had a willingness to make sure that they were covering each other and getting into position early. Portsmouth always ask questions and being at Fratton Park it’s always going to be a tough game so I was really pleased with how we played. “When the opportunity came, it fell to Reece and it was a lovely finish. That’s the moment you wait for in a game like that and I’m pleased that it fell for us.” Moore’s side also picked up their first clean sheet of the 2020/21 campaign with standout performances from across the defensive unit. “You know that with a clean sheet you’ve always got a chance of winning the game. Everyone to a man did their jobs defensively,” he added. “We stood up and showed another side to us that I was very pleased with. We had jobs to do and we did them today. “I’m please because it shows the players that when they’re on it mentally and physically they’ll get their just rewards and they did that today.”

Wright delighted with first clean sheet Joe Wright was delighted with Rovers’ first clean sheet of the campaign as they claimed an impressive 1-0 away win at Portsmouth. Reece James got the only goal of the match in impressive style and Wright was quick to praise a good team performance. “I’m delighted to get our first clean sheet of the season and to come to a tough place and get it makes it even sweeter,” he said. “We had to dig deep today but I thought we stuck to our game plan and we did really well. “Me, Tom, Cam, Brad, Reece, Josef - we say it every game, our target is always to come out of it with a clean sheet and we’re all delighted that we’ve got that done.” With the exception of loanee Josef Bursik, the back four are now in their second season together and Wright believes they’re gaining a real understanding. “I think we’ve performed well this season, we’ve built good relationships,” Wright continued. “Cameron showed he can slot in for Reece when he was pushed up the pitch on Saturday and I thought Brad and Joe Bursik were brilliant. “It was a good team performance. Second half we had to dig deep a little bit but first half, I thought we controlled the game.” On Reece James’ new advanced position, Wright added: “If he scores every game then I’m more than happy with him being there. “I don’t know if we’ll set up like that again. The gaffer takes things game by game. Against certain opposition, we’ll set up that way. “I think the gaffer knew they were going to go direct, which they did do, so we were set up for that.”
