Visiting Sheffield’s parks and green spaces during lockdown Sheffield’s parks and green spaces will remain open during the four weeks of national lockdown, but with some facilities closed in line with Government guidance. The city’s abundance of green spaces will once again be more important than ever to people during the lockdown period and we are keeping as many facilities as possible open. Playgrounds and toilets will remain open, and cafes can continue to operate on a takeaway basis only. All outdoor gym equipment, multi-use games areas and basketball courts have to close in accordance with
Government restrictions. During lockdown sports facilities and clubs that operate from within Sheffield’s parks, such as tennis courts and bowling greens, will be closed and group fitness activities or team sports are not permitted. Regular cleaning will continue to take place across they city’s playgrounds and people are asked to practice good hand hygiene while using any facilities. Toilets will be restricted to the current opening times of 9am-4pm* with a steward present at all times for access and cleaning. Anyone visiting Sheffield’s
parks, playgrounds and green spaces during the national lockdown period must adhere to the Government’s latest guidance. People should only visit with members of their own household or support bubble, or can meet outside with 1 person from another household observing social distance.
Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said:“As we begin another national lockdown I know just how important our outdoor spaces will be to people across the city.
“Throughout the last few months we have worked very hard and adapted our services many times to allow people to get the most out of our parks. This time is no different. We recognise the positive impact getting outdoors and staying active has on our physical and mental health so we are keeping measures in place to allow us to keep facilities open where possible. “In return residents must do their bit, adhere to the restrictions, follow the guidance and practice hygiene and social distancing advice always. “While time away from the

USEFUL NUMBERS
News, Information and Advice get a free flu jab now!
NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group’s (CCG) Medical Director and the Director of Public Health in Sheffield are encouraging those eligible to get their flu vaccination and help minimise the spread of flu this winter. The following groups of people are eligible for free flu vaccinations, either via their GP or pharmacist; all adults over the age of 65, pregnant women, children aged 2 and 3 years old (on 31 August 2020), people aged 6 months to 64 years with underlying health conditions or those with a learning disability. These groups are at particular risk from flu and the vaccination is still the best protection against an unpredictable virus. Social care and hospice workers are also eligible and vaccinations will be available through community pharmacy or their registered general practice on presentation of evidence of employment. This year, people who live with someone who had to shield during covid-19 will also be eligible to have a free vaccine to protect the person who had to shield. Children aged between school years reception and year 7 will be offered a nasal spray vaccine at school. Previously it was only children aged up to school year 6 that were offered the vaccine. This year, to protect more people, children in year 7 will also be offered the vaccination. Flu is a severe viral infection of the respiratory tract (nose, mouth, throat, bronchial tubes and lungs). It is a highly infectious illness which spreads rapidly in communities and even people with mild or no symptoms can infect others. Flu is different to a common cold; symptoms of flu include a fever, chills, headache, aching muscles and joint pain and fatigue. Dr Zak McMurray, a GP and Medical Director at NHS Sheffield CCG, said: “For most healthy people, flu symptoms can make you feel exhausted and unwell and you have to stay in bed and rest until you get better, but for people with underlying health conditions, people with learning disabilities, pregnant women or the elderly flu can be very serious. It’s really important that if you are eligible for a free flu vaccine you take up the offer. It is offered to these vulnerable groups of people because we know that they need it to stay well during the flu season. This year with covid-19 still circulating, it is more important than ever that people have their vaccination. If you get flu and covid at the same time, research shows you’re more likely to be seriously ill. Having your vaccination will help to reduce pressure on the NHS and social care staff who may be dealing with covid-19. People from black, Asian and minority ethnicities (BAME) are statistically more likely to suffer from many long-term conditions and therefore are at risk from flu. This has been evidenced in the disproportionate number of people from BAME communities that have been affected by covid-19 this year. Therefore it is particularly important that people from BAME communities who are offered it, have the vaccination to protect themselves and their family and wider community.” If you are eligible for a free flu vaccination your GP will contact you to arrange an appointment. To help prevent the spread of covid-19, you will be given instructions to follow when attending the practice for your vaccination and staff will be wearing special protective clothing. Please don’t turn up to your practice without an appointment. If you’re unsure whether you should have a free vaccination, please contact your practice via their usual telephone number or speak to your pharmacist. If you are not in the at risk groups but would like a flu vaccination, you can pay for the vaccination at your local pharmacy. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “This year it is especially important that as many people as possible
access the flu vaccine as soon as they can. Currently we have both the flu virus and covid19 in circulation, which makes immunisation more important than ever in helping to reduce infections to protect each other, our families, our communities and ultimately, to save lives.” Aside from having your flu vaccine, the best way to prevent the spread of flu is to practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands regularly, avoid touching your face with unclean hands, cough or sneeze in to a tissue or in to the crook of your arm – remember to throw the tissue away after and avoid contact with people who are ill. Following the covid-19 rules of staying at least 2m apart and wearing a face covering will also help stop the spread of flu. If you think you have flu, stay home and rest until you feel better, call NHS 111 if you have an underlying health condition, are pregnant or elderly and feel really unwell. Having a well-stocked medicine cabinet is useful for if flu strikes – paracetamol (or Calpol for children), ibuprofen, aspirin, cough medicine and throat lozenges may help alleviate the symptoms of flu. Remember, your local pharmacists can advise on the medicine you need to help you feel better. For more information about the flu vaccination visit www.nhs.uk/conditions/ vaccinations/flu-influenza-vaccine/
plasma donors are urgently needed!
NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in Sheffield who’ve had coronavirus to register as blood plasma donors as new figures show high numbers of infections in the city. People who’ve had the virus can donate their antibody-rich plasma, which could save the lives of people who are still seriously ill. The rising number of cases in the area means more and more people could donate and more and more people could benefit from transfusion. New figures show that during the week ending on November 1, there were 2,401 labconfirmed coronavirus cases in the Sheffield area code, the fifth highest in England. NHS Blood and Transplant is collecting blood plasma for COVID treatment – known as convalescent plasma – around the country. The neutralising antibodies in the plasma could stop the virus spreading. Around 25 people are currently donating each week at the Sheffield donor centre on Church Street in the city centre, but more donors are urgently needed as the number of infections rises. An NHS Blood and Transplant spokesperson said: “If you’ve had coronavirus, donation is a way you can help. “We urgently need people from Sheffield to donate to help treat patients in the trials and make sure stocks can be made available if the trials are a success. We especially need male donors as they generally have higher antibody levels.” Convalescent plasma is being collected at NHSBT’s 23 donor centres around the country and 19 pop-up plasma centres. Plasma is being collected for use in participating hospitals through the RECOVERY and REMAP-CAP trials, and if the trials are successful, general use in all hospitals. Donation takes about 45 minutes. Your body usually replaces the donated plasma and donated antibodies. People can donate plasma as often as every week. Anyone who has had coronavirus, either a test result or the symptoms, can offer to donate by calling 0300 123 23 23 or visiting www.nhsbt.nhs.uk

Pets are welcome too We know that animals are often part of the family, so we’re always happy to welcome well-behaved pets to our retirement communities. Award-winning choices for the older generation Three of our communities have won Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards for the Best Retirement Development in the UK at the WhatHouse? Awards. OWLS SACK MONK Sheffield Wednesday have terminated the contracts of manager Garry Monk and his staff with immediate effect. Monk joined the Owls in September 2019 and has since overseen 58 games. Chairman Dejphon Chansiri told swfc.co.uk: “I feel the time is right to make a change and I wish Garry and his team all the best for the future. “I would like to say thank you for the time and effort Garry and his staff have committed to Sheffield Wednesday.” The club said will be making no further comment at this time.
BLADES STILL SEARCHING FOR POINTS A night that started so well for the Blades ended in disappointment at Stamford Bridge. David McGoldrick gave the Blades an early lead, only for Chelsea to hit four times without reply to condemn a battling United to defeat in West London. For the clash in the capital, Wilder made three changes. Midweek illness meant McBurnie was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench and was replaced by McGoldrick, whilst Norwood and Lundstram were recalled in midfield with Ampadu ineligible and Osborn dropping to the bench. It was a fast start from the Blades, a couple of overloads on the right saw the visitors threaten inside the opening minute but despite early crosses from Baldock then Berge, Chelsea through James and Silva stood firm. At the other end, Ramsdale had to be alert and get his angles right to deny Chilwell, before Ziyech fired over on the rebound. A raking ball forward from Egan saw Baldock get the better of Chilwell and force the first of three corners in quick succession and from the last of those United took a deserved early lead on

nine minutes. Norwood released Baldock on the right, his low centre was sent towards goal by a stretching Berge and MCGOLDRICK produced an excellent flick to redirect the ball and wrong foot Mendy. Following the goal, Chelsea understandably enjoyed more of the ball, but it was the Blades, through Lowe who registered another attempt on target with a left-footed half volley from distance testing Mendy. In the 23rd minute though, the hosts restored parity with a swift passing move, that ended with Kovacic getting beyond the Blades defence and teeing up ABRAHAM who dragged an effort into Ramsdale's far corner. As the clocked ticked past the half hour, the Blades survived a major scare. Ziyech's inswinging free-kick from the right evaded everyone and Ramsdale had to parry away, but on the rebound Werner rattled the woodwork before United eventually cleared the danger. Chelsea were now on top and went in front on 34 minutes. After Ramsdale had saved from James, the resulting corner was played short and Ziyech's delivery to the far post wasn't dealt with by Ramsdale or Lowe and the ball hit a fortunate CHILWELL and dropped in the net. Egan was then booked for halting the progress of the advancing Werner, as Chelsea looked to break at pace. From a left-wing corner, Zouma kept the ball alive as United look to clear and Ramsdale was down smartly to deny Abraham on the turn. Back on the attack with half-time approaching, Lowe forced a corner off Kante and Mendy looked far from decisive from Norwood's inswinger as he

MONK’S IRONIC LAST STAND - IT’S BEEN A POSITIVE WEEK
After a dramatic week yielding 10 points and a move off the foot of the Championship, Garry Monk said the only thing missing was a win against Millwall on Saturday. Wednesday posted a 0-0 draw with the Lions despite being the better side and creating the better chances. And Monk said: “We set out what we intended to do and that was to put them under pressure and we could have scored in the first couple of minutes. “We’ve gone on to dominate the game, Joe hasn’t had a save to make, and the only thing missing was a goal. attempted to come out and claim in a crowded six-yard box, before Lundstram stung his palms from distance. Early in the second-half only a last-ditch tackle from Basham stopped Kovacic in his tracks as he looked to take advantage of a poor header by Stevens. Chelsea were having the majority of the ball and after Mount and Abraham had combined, Egan had to head over as Ziyech lined up an effort from distance. The resulting corner caused some worrying moments for the Blades, but Egan blocked Abraham before Ramsdale did just enough to get his hand to Chilwell's fizzing ball across goal. United's first change shortly after the hour saw McBurnie and Osborn replace Brewster and Norwood, as Ramsdale had to save a dipping free-kick from James before Kovacic curled a shot narrowly wide. But with 13 minutes left to play the home side added a third, after Lowe was harshly penalised for an alleged foul on James. Ziyech whipped in a cross from the right and SILVA rose highest to head home past an advancing Ramsdale. Ziyech was causing the Blades all kinds of problems, but thankfully from his through ball,
“How we haven’t hit the back of the net I will never know. Their goalkeeper has had a great game so credit to him. But on another day we win that game and we win it comfortably.” Overall, though, Monk reflected on a positive week at Hillsborough, adding: “We’ve had a 10-point week, two clean sheets, a win and a draw and we’re off the bottom of the division so that has to been seen as a real positive. “I feel sorry for the players in that changing room, though, they have given absolutely everything today and deserved a win. “But it will come, it will turn, it might take a lucky goal, a scruffy goal or something like that and we have to keep that belief.”
Werner looped an effort wide when clean through on goal. Moments later though, WERNER made no mistake as he fired past Ramsdale after an attempted clearance from Lowe set up the chance. With time running out, United forced a couple of corners, but Abraham and then Zouma won the first header for Chelsea. A switch of play from Lundstram eventually led to Baldock having a sight of goal, his shot was deflected behind before Mendy claimed a cross from Lowe. Three minutes of added time were signalled and Ramsdale had to deny Mount from adding another goal for the hosts, with what proved to be the last action of note. Chelsea: Mendy, James, Zouma, Thiago Silva, Chilwell, Kovacic (Jorginho 71), Kante, Mount, Ziyech, Abraham, Werner (Giroud 87). Unused: Caballero, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Emerson, Hudson-Odoi. Blades: Ramsdale, Baldock, Stevens, Basham, Lundstram, Berge, Egan, Lowe, Norwood (Osborn 62), McGoldrick, Brewster (McBurnie 62) Unused: Sharp, Burke, Jagielka, Robinson.

Warne delighted Butler praises to see efforts professional rewarded performance Paul Warne described today’s victory over Preston North End as “Relieving, pleasing and inspiring” as the Millers boss reflected on the 2-1 win at AESSEAL New York Stadium. With six changes from Wednesday night’s defeat to Luton Town, the Rotherham manager saw a big uplift from his side to see off a Preston North End team in red hot form on their travels. “I said to the lads beforehand and told them a couple of stories about how hard it is to become a professional footballer and how hard it is to get in the team,” Warne said. “The ups and downs of football life is pretty brutal. I said it’s all for these next two hours – that’s all it’s about. It doesn’t matter if you train well on a Thursday. I asked them to leave everything out there and if they weren’t on the receiving end of a good result, then as long as they’d put in a good performance we’d be proud of them. “I thought, first half, we were excellent and deserved to take the lead. Unfortunately we have to create a lot of chances to score, which does leave us more vulnerable, obviously. To go 1-0 up and concede pretty late on, I was pleased that the lads weren’t happy with a point and they wanted the three points. We had the bravery to still attack and, overall, we deserved the win. I thought we had more clear-cut chances and there were some brilliant performances. “I’m really pleased with my goalkeeper. I love goalkeepers who are risk takers, who come for things. He definitely did that and he saved us a couple of times today. That and the four other changes had a real, positive impact.”

Stand-in manager Andy Butler praised Rovers’ professional performance as they eased past seventh tier FC United of Manchester to be in the hat for the Emirates FA Cup second round. An early goal from Fejiri Okenabirhie set the tone and goals from Ben Whiteman, Josh Sims and James Coppinger had all but put the game to bed by half-time. Another goal from Sims just after the break meant it was a comfortable evening but the score-line was perhaps a little flattering as Rovers proved clinical. “I thought FC United of Manchester were a well organised side. They played a good style of football – they play in what I believe is the right way and I was really impressed with them,” said Butler. “We put in a professional performance. The players did exactly what the gaffer, Jamie Smith and myself asked them to do so I’m pleased. “Obviously towards the end of the second half there were aspects we could have done better and we’ll look at that but overall it was a pleasing performance.” It was a whirlwind 48 hours for Butler who had just finished taking part in Thursday’s virtual Fit Rovers session when he got the call that he would be taking charge of Rovers FA Cup match. “Who’d have thought a boy from Balby would manage a team like Doncaster Rovers? Very proud and really pleased,” he added. “The Gaffer named the side and the bench and gave me a bit of advice and then it was free reign from there. All the subs were Nick and my decision and they just said go and enjoy yourself so we did. “The backroom staff, everyone around and the players have all been really helpful but I relish these opportunities and I’m really thankful that the club and the gaffer have trusted me to take this on.”
