Sheffield is lit up for festive season Last weekend the city started the countdown to Christmas with Heart Yorkshire’s Dixie and Emma, Lord Mayor of Sheffield and the big man himself Father Christmas performing with Christmas light switch on online.

Lord Mayor, Councillor Tony Downing, was joined by

Heart’s popular duo to bring festive cheer right into your living rooms, as he pressed the plunger to turn on Sheffield’s Christmas Lights, and handed over the ‘clean and sanitised’ key to Sheffield to Father Christmas.

Under normal circumstances Sheffield city centre and the Peace Gardens would

be packed with tens of thousands of people waiting to countdown the beginning of the festive season in the city. This year due to Covid restrictions, a public event cannot take place so the event was pre-filmed and the switch on hosted online.

Sheffield is illuminated across the city centre on Fargate, the Peace Gardens, Barkers Pool, Pinstone Street, The Moor and Division Street, right up to 5 January 2021.

Although people have not been able to come into the centre to watch the switch on, they can enjoy seeing it beautifully lit up while taking their time outdoors or shopping for essential items.

It is hoped that restrictions

will be relaxed by some level after the 2 December, when more shops and hospitality businesses may be able to open, allowing people to enjoy a fuller festive experience.

Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, said: “Our light switch on always signifies the start of the Christmas season and I know that many people will be disappointed that we can’t hold a public event this year.

“Our time away from the home should be limited but for those of you where it is safe to do so, I’m know you’ll enjoy a walk around the city centre during the Christmas period, taking in the festive

lights, grabbing a family photo in our Peace Gardens bauble and picking up a few gifts on your way.

“I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas-time and hope we can all find simple ways to appreciate and enjoy the season.”

Under the current guidelines people can spend time outdoors with those from your own household or support bubble, or with 1 person from another household observing social distance. This means that people can visit the city centre during national restrictions to take in the Christmas lights and festive atmosphere.

Crystal Peaks maintains services during lockdown period CRYSTAL Peaks shopping centre has confirmed which stores will remain in operation through the November lockdown.

Sainsburys, M&S and Iceland will continue to operate as food and drink suppliers with other stores on the essential list and remaining open including Superdrug, Wilko, Poundland, Specsavers, Holland & Barrett, One Below, Redbrik, Timpson, Halifax, Natwest, William H Brown, Haybrook, HSBC, Boots Opticians and the large Boots at the Crystal Peaks Retail park, which operates a pharmacy service.

Open for takeaway only will be Shhhh Coffee, Love Coffee, Greggs, Subway, Costa Coffee, McDonalds, Beres and Domino’s.

Stores operating a Click and Collect service will include Next, Max Spielmann, The Perfume Shop, SEX and BHF Furniture, via the charity’s eBay site.

Safety measures for Crystal Peaks visitors

continue to be maintained and include a Keep Left system throughout the centre to maintain customer flow and enable customers to social distance with ease.

Entry to the centre will be monitored to ensure capacities are within social distancing limits with both signage and audible messaging on the Public Address system supporting the changes. Tram and bus passengers will be encouraged to use the entrance closest to their destination shops to reduce the amount of queuing required.

Supermarket trollies will no longer be allowed to move between levels, freeing up space for customer movement and relieving pressure on lifts. Sainsbury’s customers are being asked to park in the Green car park.

Washroom facilities will be available on the lower mall adjacent to the escalators.

Hand sanitising stations will be available throughout the centre.

“We take great pride in our level of cleaning and can assure visitors that the highest standards are being implemented across the centre,” said centre manager Lee Greenwood.

“Our guidance is there to ensure that we protect our friends and family through these unprecedented times.

“If our customers are patient, considerate and respectful of the guidance it will assist us in continuing to provide essential services during this period.”

Sheffield’s ‘air guitar’ originators dismissed their biggest fan – David Bowie…

From Def Leppard to Bring Me The Horizon, Sheffield’s ability to produce multi-million selling rock acts is widely known around the globe.

But one lesser known addition to its heavy metal credentials is its impact on dancefloors around the world.

A new book, ‘Signing On For The Devil – the Rise of Steel City Rock’, lifts the lid on the story of the Bailey Brothers, a duo that are widely recognised as the originators of the ‘air guitar’ phenomenon.

It was all part of an unlikely rise to fame for two black former miners from Killamarsh that went on to present the first ever rock show on MTV and counted David Bowie as one of their biggest fans.

Whilst most of their peers were either fans of disco or punk in 1976, Mick and Dez Bailey were hooked on heavy metal from an early age.

Their first gig as fledgling DJs was on May 13th, 1977. They hired Killamarsh Village Hall and went under the name ‘Mick & Dez Bailey’s Heavy Metal Road Show’.

They would DJ anywhere they could get a gig – from youth clubs to pubs – and a couple of years later their tenacity paid off, the secured a residency at Retford Porterhouse, a northern stronghold for the rock scene in the late 1970s.

But it was the day they decided to give away imitation guitars coupled with their first DJ spots in London that set them on the road to fame – and ‘air guitar’ infamy.

Mick said: “My friend Brian Frost was a joiner and he made about 100 plywood guitars and painted them up. We gave them away as people were coming in. And the whole place was rocking with these guitars. Nobody had seen anything like it!”

It was finding themselves splashed across the front cover of Time Out magazine under the headline – ‘Why are

these men playing cardboard guitars’ – in 1980 that secured their status as ‘air guitar’ originators.

The Bailey Brothers went on to front the first ever rock show on MTV pulling in 15 million viewers a show. They helped to break bands spanning Bon Jovi to Metallica in the era.

One of their biggest fans was, unbeknown to them, David Bowie.

Mick Bailey said: “I had a call to see if we’d introduce a band on stage in Bradford. I thought it was a wind-up.

They said they were the Tin Pot Men or Tin Men or something. I never even bothered writing down the number. I mentioned it to Dez later that day and he said, the only act with a name like that are Tin Machine, David Bowie’s band.

“I nearly had a heart attack, I’d just turned down an invitation from David Bowie!”

An hour later they had another call – from David Bowie himself.

Mick said: “I knew it was him, no mis-

taking that voice. He said, ‘Mick its David, I know you think it’s a wind up but we’ve been recording our album in Switzerland, and every week we stop for an hour and watch your MTV show. We love it. My grandparents are from Doncaster and it’s great to hear a Yorkshire accent on the TV. We are playing up north not far from you guys and we would love you to come and hang with us, introduce us on to the stage.’”

The rest as they say, is history. They introduced David Bowie and Tin Machine and partied with the band back the hotel.”

Music Venue Trust (MVT), which represents hundreds of UK grassroots music venues (GMVs), has announced a new phase of its hugely successful #saveourvenues campaign, which will be focused on securing the future of 30 venues who were ineligible to receive funding from, or wholly or partially unsuccessful in their application to, the recent government backed Cultural Recovery Fund.

These grassroots venues play a crucial role in the development of British music, nurturing local talent, providing a platform for artists to build their careers and develop their music and their performance skills.

These venues also play a vital role in the cultural and economic vibrancy of any village, town or city.

This new ‘Traffic Light’ campaign will highlight venues considered safe until March 31st (Green– 353 venues), those at risk of closure between now and March 31st without additional support (Amber273 venues) and those at imminent danger of permanent closure (Red30 venues). Dryad Works is one of those 30 venues that has been marked as being in imminent danger of permanent closure. “Without assistance we are set to close our doors for good and lose our home. But, it’s not just our home, it’s the home of

many creatives who rely on its survival to keep their livelihoods secure” said Dryad Works’ Joe Taylor.

“Our DIY ethos has meant we have rarely asked for help before but this is serious.

The situation is critical. The timing is imminent. We form a self-built community of creative individuals who work together to bring an authentic underground DIY venue experience to Sheffield. Since opening in 2018 we have had the privilege of hosting countless numbers of internationally recognised artists and have successfully provided a safe night time space for thousands of guests. We offer creative workspace and development opportunities to over 15 independent sound systems, artists, designers and creative individuals including some of the oldest and most respected names in the Sheffield creative industry.

We have done all this in just 24 months and now we are in a situation that forces us to seek help.”

Also at risk is Plot 22 "What's at risk with Plot 22 is much more than just a music venue. Plot 22 is a veritable creative hub that houses studio space for over 10 independent creative artists. It also provides a safe creative space that exists to support many others through ongoing workshops, projects and support sessions for young people and vulnerable

adults in Sheffield” explains Michael Thompson.

“Despite losing tens of thousands in lost trade, throughout the lockdown period we've continued to be an invaluable source of support for artists in the underground community and beneficiaries we have met through outreach projects.

A new crowdfunding initiative powered by Crowdfunder has been launched to secure the future of these 30 GMVs. Sheffield Music Hub are excited to announce the recruitment of 30 more superstar musicians to the Furthering Talent – Musical Stars programme.

Ian Naylor, Head of Music Education at Sheffield Music Hub said: “Thanks to generous support from the Friends and Volunteers of Sheffield Music Hub who are able to fund the extra places, and to our friends at Awards for Young Musicians for providing us with additional funding and strategic support. We know music has the power to change lives and that the Furthering Talent and Musical Stars programmes have a real impact on those who need it the most. Through funding for tuition on an instrument of their choice, exciting termly musical events and Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), this personalised approach reaches to the heart of every young musician, unlocking unique potential and building communities of confident musicians who are in charge of their own musical futures.

We know that music beats in every corner of our city - it is our job to listen and make sure every young musician is given the support they need to reach their full potential.

We are really excited to provide these new opportunities to our young people. This however, is only the beginning of our journey.

There are still countless children and young people within our city going without the opportunities that others may take for granted.

Too many young people are held back from exploring their full musical potential due to a lack of support, whilst others are denied the opportunity to ever get started.

sheffield test centre relocates this week

The Sheffield Mobile Testing Unit previously based at Milton Street Car Park in Broomhall has relocated to Parkside Road Car Park in Hillsborough.

The site opened at its new location from Tuesday 17 November until Monday 7 December for a period of 3 weeks. Access to the centre is both pedestrian and drive-through.

The site operating hours will be 11am-3.00pm open 7 days a week.

The testing centre is accessible with a prebooked appointment only.

Only arrange a test if you have Covid symptoms.

You can arrange for a test by booking via the national portal online nhs.uk/coronavirus or calling 119.

Do not attend the site without an appointment, you will be turned away if you do not have a booking.

If you have any of the following symptoms, you need to arrange a free test: • A high temperature • A new, continuous cough • A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste Testing continues to play a vital part in our fight against the spread of Covid-19 in our city and to help reduce the rate of people contracting the virus, we need your help. If you are showing symptoms, however mild, you need to get tested as soon as you can.

Residents in and around Dinnington will be able to get tested for Coronavirus faster and more easily at the new walk-through COVID test site which opened in the town from Saturday 14 November.

From Monday 16 November, the site has been available for appointments between 8am-8pm throughout the week. Tests can be booked by going on the NHS website or by calling 119.

The new seven bay test site will be able to run 252 COVID tests per day – amounting to an impressive over 1,700 tests each week.

Located in the Dinnington Resource Centre car park, the test site offers a more accessible location for residents in and around Dinnington and means they do not need to travel as far to the other test sites in the borough, including the Forge Island testing site in Rotherham town centre. Following the national shortage of testing slots several weeks ago, local testing sites are once again reporting good availability, however, those needing a test will need to book an appointment at their most convenient test site before going for their test. Some parking is available near the site, however local residents are encouraged to walk to the test site where possible.

Rotherham Council member Cllr David Roche, said: “The Council has been working with the Department of Health and Social Care to make getting tested more readily available for those who may struggle to get into Rotherham town centre. These residents, and others living in other areas of the borough, have not been forgotten about during the pandemic and we want to make sure that everyone in Rotherham has access to the vital services they need, from getting tested to receiving support from the Rotherham Heroes programme to getting financial support.”

Chair of the Trustees Jane Havenhand, said: “Dinnington Resource Centre Trustees and Management are delighted to be able to provide space for the new test site in the town as it will have a huge impact on getting people in the area tested and helping us to continue our fight against coronavirus.”

Only those who have COVID-19 symptoms, including a new continuous cough, a high temperature, or loss of taste or smell, must get a test, even if their symptoms are mild. Residents with symptoms, along with anyone they live with or anyone in their support bubble, must self-isolate until they receive their test result.

Appointments for the Dinnington test site are now live on the 119 and NHS booking site - if you cannot see any appointments available, try again later as new appointments are being added.

Shoppers across Yorkshire are being urged to donate to the UK’s biggest food collection and support the Trussell Trust and FareShare as they help people in crisis amid the Covid-19 pandemic this Christmas.

The Tesco Food Collection takes place every year, but this year’s collection is more vital than ever. It comes as Trussell Trust food banks and community groups across the UK who get food from FareShare face an unprecedented need for supplies.

The collection has launched in Tesco Express and is open in large stores from Thurs Nov 19.

Customers have until the evening of Sat Nov 21 to donate long-life food in store.

Last year generous shoppers donated more than 3million meals-worth of food during the collection. Tesco will once again be topping up the value of donations with an additional 20% in cash.

“Every year Tesco customers across Yorkshire are incredibly generous,” said Tesco’s Head of Community Claire De Silva. “But this year is not a normal year, and the two charities we work with need to provide more food than ever this Christmas. A single tin of tuna or vegetables may not seem like much to give, but if enough people make a small donation then together those donations can make a really big difference to people who need our help this winter. Tesco will top up the value of every tin, packet or carton given with an extra 20% in cash, helping food banks across the UK to keep the lights on this Christmas and FareShare vans to deliver food to people who really need it.”

The Trussell Trust’s network of food banks is expected to give out six emergency food parcels to people in crisis every minute this winter. Chief Executive Emma Revie said: “The pandemic has shown the power of what happens when we stand together in the face of adversity and how much people are willing to give in order to support their local community. To have the ongoing support of Tesco and their customers is crucial. Items donated during this year’s Food Collection will allow food banks in our network to provide the best possible help to people in the run up to Christmas. Every donation will make such a difference in communities across the UK so please do consider donating in store.”

Tony Pulis appointed Owls manager Sheffield Wednesday are pleased to announce the appointment of Tony Pulis as our new first team manager.

Pulis brings a wealth of experience to Hillsborough having overseen a mammoth 1,123 senior games through almost three decades in the dugout.

Prior to that, the Welshman made 326 appearances for a raft of clubs as an uncompromising defender.

With a future career on the other side of the white line in mind, Pulis earned his FA coaching badge aged just 19 and UEFA ‘A’ licence two years later.

His on-field calling spanned 17 years before a player/coach role with Bournemouth, where he would become number two to Harry Redknapp, moving into the top job when Redknapp departed the Cherries.

Pulis switched to Gillingham in 1995, whom he led to an immediate promotion from League Two and the League One play-off final of 1999, which the Gills lost to Manchester City on penalties.

Stints at Bristol City and Portsmouth followed before two lengthy stays at Stoke, sandwiched by a brief foray to Plymouth. His first stint at the Britannia Stadium was a firefighting mission that saw the Potters survive Championship relegation on the last day of the 2002/03 season

– preceded by a rebuild mission that resulted in Stoke posting promotion to the Premier League in 2008.

Despite being installed as bookies’ favourites for an immediate drop, Pulis navigated a comfortable 12th-place finish. The following season, he made history with Stoke as he guided the club to their first ever FA Cup final, where they were edged out 1-0 by Manchester City.

Subsequent Europa League qualification saw the Potters’ European ambitions ended by Spanish outfit Valencia.

Pulis moved to the capital with Crystal Palace in 2013, steering the Eagles from relegation danger to their highest ever Premier League finish of 11th next time round. That impressive pedigree saw Pulis awarded the coveted Premier League Manager of the Year trophy.

West Brom was the next challenge in 2015 and a top-ten finish was achieved before trading the Midlands for Teesside in 2017. Pulis steered Middlesbrough to the play-offs in his first campaign and missed out on a second successive top-six slot the following term by just a single point.

He left the Riverside in 2019 and now takes up his 11th managerial post, leading the Owls for the first time next Saturday at Preston when the Championship season resumes.

dream come true LAy-off for Sadlier to play for Rovers Liam Ravenhill says he’s hungry for more first-team action after making his full Rovers debut in the Papa John’s Trophy tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers U21s.

The 17-year-old played 85 minutes at the Keepmoat Stadium, backing up his cameo appearance off the bench against FC United of Manchester in the Emirates FA Cup a few days earlier.

He said: “I’ve dreamt of playing for the club ever since I was eight or nine-years-old, it was an amazing experience.

“It shows what the level is to play regularly, coming up against some experienced players has given me a taste of things.

“I was really excited to play, I’ve been around it for a few weeks and I want to stay around things now.”

Liam followed in his dad Ricky’s footsteps in pulling on a Rovers shirt and playing alongside James Coppinger, and says it was a proud moment for his family.

He added: “I’ve been here nine years so it was a bit surreal playing with Copps as I’ve watched him for so long.

“Everything I read after the FA Cup tie was about coming on for him, for me and my dad both to have played with him is brilliant.

“Copps is always helping everybody in training, he will show you where to improve and I know I can lean on him if I need to.”

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne has confirmed that winger Kieran Sadlier will be out for up to three months after suffering ligament damage in his ankle in the victory over Preston North End. Sadlier was handed a setback midway through the first half against the Lilywhites and a scan has revealed the summer signing won’t be pulling on a Millers’ shirt this side of the New Year.

The 26-year-old is the latest player to have been side-lined for an extended period, joining Chiedozie Ogbene, Clark Robertson and Shaun MacDonald in the treatment room.

“He’s had a scan and that has come back saying that he’s got ligament damage, we don’t know whether that will need operating on or not but either way that means he’s going to be out for at least three months,” Warne told www.themillers. co.uk “With Chieo (Ogbene), Robbo (Clark Robertson), Shaun (MacDonald) and now Kieran Sadlier all injured, that means we now have four big players for us all missing.

“We do train the lads hard, but luckily right now we haven’t had a muscle injury, because loads of clubs are suffering with them.

“The lads are in good shape, at the weekend Kieran (Sadlier) got tackled, he rolled on it and put his body weight on his ankle. That has got nothing to do with over training, we’ve just been unfortunate.”

The Millers are currently enjoying some extra time on the training ground following the second international break of the season but are set for a hectic fixture schedule when they return to Sky Bet Championship action next Saturday.

A trip to South Wales to face Swansea City will start a run of 11 games between then (Saturday 21st November) and the turn of the year and manager Paul Warne has again stressed the importance of a squad effort, as his side approach a mammoth period of their campaign.
