COUNCIL LEADER TO STEP DOWN ECO SOFAS Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, can announce that she will be standing down as Leader next month. Councillor Dore announced in January that she would not be seeking re-election as Councillor for Park & Arbourthorne when her term was due to expire in May this year. She has served as a Councillor since 2000 and Leader of the Council since 2011. However, when the local elections were cancelled due to the pandemic, she stayed on as Leader to help tackle the Coronavirus pandemic in the city. A new Leader of the Labour Group will be elected

on Monday 7 December. Councillor Dore will remain as a Councillor for Park & Arbourthorne Ward until her term expires in May 2021. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “When I announced in January that I would not be seeking re-election in May, no one could have predicted the events that were about to unfold over the coming months . When the COVID crisis hit in March and the local elections were cancelled I thought that it was the only right and responsible thing to do to stay on to help navigate Sheffield through the crisis. “The current situation has impacted on all of us in

some way, we have all been touched by it and I am proud of the way that the city has come together to support each other. I am proud of the role that the council has played in providing support to the people most in need and most impacted by this situation as well as getting support to our businesses. Whilst at the same time continuing to run and operate the day to day services for the people of Sheffield. Doing all of this whilst having to adapt to new ways of working in the same way that so many different organisations and businesses have had to during the pandemic. “As a city we have come

together across our communities and so many different organisations to fight this pandemic to I would like to thank everyone that I have worked with over this period. We have worked with councils across South Yorkshire and I would like to thank the other South Yorkshire Council Leaders and Mayor Dan Jarvis for the joint work we have undertaken together as a region, which has been crucial. “Clearly this is still far from over and we still have much more to do to beat this. But I think that now is the right time to allow a new Leader to take over, as we enter a new year and a new Chief

Executive will also be starting in January. “As I said when I announced I would not be seeking re-election, it has been such a great honour to serve my community as a councillor for 20 years and the city that I love as Leader of the council for nearly 10 years. I have always said that for me Sheffield is the best place in the world, I have lived here all my life, raised my family here and there is nowhere else I would ever want to live. I would like to thank everyone who I have worked with in this time, it is the people of Sheffield who make this city what it is and it has been a privilege to serve them.”

MUSIC FOUNDATION LAUNCHES IN MEMORY OF TRAMLINES DIRECTOR Last week marked the official launch of a new charity to support people across Sheffield in memory of Tramlines director, Sarah Nulty. The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation provides grant funding to community groups, schools and socially and economically disadvantaged people to access the transformative power of music. From funding music therapy for community groups and grants to purchase instruments to enabling people to access online music classes throughout lockdown, The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation aims to spread happiness, through music. Headed up by Sarah’s mum Julie Voisey, the Charity’s trustees include Sarah’s fam-

ily members and friends. Julie said: “Since we lost Sarah, we have been overwhelmed by the way her friends and the people across the city came together to support local charities in her memory. In creating the Power of Music Foundation, we hope to spread happiness and joy throughout Sheffield in a new way. We know that music has the ability to improve people’s mental wellbeing and in these very difficult times, I truly hope we can make a difference to people’s lives. “Music was such an enormous part of Sarah’s life and something so close to her heart. This feels like the right way to remember her.” Speaking about the Foundation’s grant funding launch, Julia Waldron, Development

Manager from Under The Stars, the arts and events charity for people with learning disabilities, said: “Sarah was a passionate supporter of Under The Stars, she gave our artists exposure on prominent stages they are often excluded from. This fund will give lots more people with a disability in Sheffield opportunities in music that would otherwise be unavailable. We are really looking forward to working with the Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation in the future.” Individuals and businesses across Sheffield can support by making regular or one-off donations via TotalGiving and by purchasing a range of limited-edition merchandise. In the Foundation’s shop online at www.thesarahnultypowerofmusicfoundation.

co.uk, supporters can buy the iconic ‘Be More Nulty’ t-shirts as well as tote bags with an exclusive new design to represent the charity’s new beginnings. Tote bags are also now on sale with all proceeds going directly to the Foundation. Supporting organisations are invited to apply for the Power of Music Foundation’s first round of grant funding by visiting the Foundation’s website. Individual grants of up to around £300 will be considered and might be used to: · Support children and adults to develop their musical talents by funding music lessons, clubs, instruments, and live music events · Fund music therapies and musical experiences for people in the community;

through groups supporting children and families experiencing hardship, people with disabilities, asylum seeker and refugee groups and similar · Sponsor a school’s music room, by purchasing musical instruments and equipment, so children of all backgrounds and abilities can learn to play · Provide funds for existing charitable groups to provide

music-based activities and therapies for the people they support

For more information on The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation, how to get involved, donate or sponsor, contact Julie Voisey at thesarahnultypom@ gmail.com. You can also visit the website at www. thesarahnultypowerofmusicfoundation.co.uk

quit smoking with council support discover more “ME” time in a caring community

In a bid to support members of the public to quit smoking and protect their health this winter, Sheffield City Council is giving people free access to the Smoke Free app, which has helped over 500,000 people quit smoking across the country. This winter protecting our health has never been more important, and smokers have a higher risk of getting respiratory infections such as flu or COVID-19, the infection lasting longer, and being more serious than those who don’t smoke. As well as reducing those risks, quitting smoking brings benefits straight away, with improvements to the body starting from the moment you quit. Plus, with Christmas just around the corner, quitting now could save the average smoker around £210 in just six weeks, meaning more money in the pocket at a time where many might be struggling with finances. The programme involves free access for the first 200 people to the most popular stop smoking app, Smoke Free (normally £60), alongside a 4-week structured quit plan which includes oneto-one support from a stop smoking advisor virtually. This gives the people of Sheffield the best chance of quitting successfully, as smokers are three times more likely to quit with the use of specialist behavioural support and stop smoking medicines. However, it is known from local and national data that a larger proportion of people try to quit alone which is the least effective way to quit. Through funding the 200 free plans, Sheffield City Council is enhancing the local stop smoking service offer and ensuring users have access to further evidenced-based quit support, that gives up to date information on how they are gaining from

quitting as well as quick access to support in their pocket via their phone, access to an online community of quitters and expert-led group discussions which people can take part in or watch. “Quitting smoking is one of the best things people can do right now to protect their health, so it’s great that we can support those ready to make their quit attempt with this offer. As we know no two quit journeys are the same, the app helps people to quit the right way for them. And people will feel the benefits instantly. Not just in their health, but in their pockets too,” says Greg Fell, Director of Public Health. Smokers will be encouraged to download the Smoke Free app, with the first 200 using the code SCCSF to access the app for free. The app can be downloaded from getmesmokefree.com. “Around 16 people die each week from a smoking-related illness in our city, and now more than ever, it’s important that people take care of their health and protect those around them. We know that people are three times more likely to have a successful quit attempt when they use a stop smoking service, and with free access to additional support through the Smoke Free app, we’re asking people to just give it a go.” Cllr Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks & Leisure urges smokers. Smokefree Sheffield offers advice and support to help people quit in Sheffield. Free support though the stop smoking service is available to everyone in the city. For advice and support to quit smoking this winter and beyond visit www. smokefreesheffield.org

we need your laptop! heart charity appeals for public support

As the pandemic continues to disrupt schooling, many thousands of young people are falling behind with their studies because they cannot access the internet at home. The city needs your help to close this digital divide by donating unused devices to the Laptops for Kids campaign. The city wants to ensure that every child gets safe access to the internet so they can fulfil their educational potential. In a time of national crisis, the public and private sectors in Sheffield have come together to meet this challenge. Launched with local company WANdisco plc, by developing a practical solution to a social problem by addressing the digital divide. The aim is to perfect this model in Sheffield and plan to roll it out across South Yorkshire. Data security is of course a big issue. Donors can securely erase devices themselves. Alternatively, they can arrange for the certified secure erasure of devices. Students at the WANdisco Data Academy at The Sheffield College’s City Campus are securely erasing devices under the guidance of IT experts. They are using licenses and certification donated by global data security expert Blancco in support of the campaign. Learn Sheffield, a not-forprofit organisation, is distributing certified erased devices to schools, according to need. Natterhub is providing access to digital literacy and safety content. Early donors include DLA Piper, Westfield Health, Benchmark Consult, and a number of private individuals. Many are already helping to close the digital divide in Sheffield. Please do join us and help in any way you can. To make a donation, business, organisations and individuals should contact laptopsforkids@wandisco.com and arrange collection. We will accept laptops, tablets, desktops and chargers. Financial donations will also be accepted. To pledge your support, please email laptopsforkids@wandisco. com or visit www.LTFK.co.uk

At Jacob’s Gate, you no longer have to worry about maintenance or mowing. All apartments have their own private patio or balcony and everyone can enjoy the beautiful, landscaped gardens, offering quiet corners, a summer house and relaxing spaces. Our game plan went out of the window Albeit disappointed with the result, Tony Pulis was pleased with the commitment the Owls showed after going down to 10 men in our 1-0 defeat to Preston at Deepdale. Tom Barkhuizen’s well-placed volley secured three points for the Lilywhites, after Josh Windass saw red following a high challenge on Joe Rafferty after 17 minutes. Pulis said: “We came here with a game plan, we started with a 4-3-3 and wanted to get Moses and Reachy pushing up and down the flanks. “But, obviously, after 15 minutes our game plan went out of the window. “I thought their effort and commitment was absolutely fabulous. You have to give the lads a lot of credit. Preston only had one shot at goal and that was their goal.

“We showed some good things today, but there are things we need to improve. There are some tough games coming up.” Windass will miss the Owls’ next three games through suspension after his dismissal at Deepdale. Pulis added: “I haven’t seen the red card back yet. His foot was high and I don’t think we’ll be able to appeal it. “Red cards are not what we need right now and the three games Josh is going to miss is going to hurt us. “I think Josh could have headed it. He says he was trying to get it out to Reachy but unfortunately didn’t see the player until late and after that it’s a toss of a coin.”

United slipped to a narrow home defeat against West Ham at Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon. Despite creating a number of good chances in a even contest, it was a second-half strike from Sebastien Haller that proved decisive for the Hammers. For the clash against West Ham, Wilder made three changes. Fleck returned from a back injury, Ampadu replaced the injured Stevens in defence and McBurnie started in attack. Kicking towards the Kop end, it was a quick start from the Blades. Lowe found space to cross on the left but despite getting across his marker, McBurnie couldn’t make a clan contact with the ball. Egan’s ball forward found the run of Baldock, he got the better of Masuaku but Fabianski saved with his feet at the near post. United continued to threaten down the right, with both Basham and then Berge getting early balls into the box, the second of which won the first corner of the game. A quiet spell followed, with the visitors enjoying more of the

ball, particularly down United’s left. But it was the Blades on the counter that tested Fabianski twice in the space of five seconds. Basham’s tackle enabled Norwood to free Baldock, he slipped in McBurnie who stung the palms of the Polish stopper before Fleck’s effort was a tamer one on the rebound. As the half hour approached, Ramsdale was called into action for the first time. Masuaku got the better of Baldock, before the ball was eventually switched to the right but thankfully, United’s number one was down quickly to deny Coufal. On 34 minutes, West Ham missed the best chance of the game. A quick throw-in down the left freed Fornals, his ball into the box was nodded down by Haller into the path of Soucek, but he volleyed wide with the goal at his mercy. Five minutes before the break, McBurnie came close to the opener. A well worked thrown-in on the right ended with Basham crossing and McBurnie rosed highest only for Fabianski to tip over with ball destined for the top corner. From the resulting corner, McBurnie headed back towards goal, but McGoldrick was adjudged to be in an offside position. But at the other end, Egan had to be at his best to stand tall and block Bowen’s path to goal, after the former Hull man had outmuscled Ampadu. Like the first half, United were quickly out of the traps, but Fabianski was equal to McGoldrick’s

effort from distance. The visitors responded, but Ramsdale was brave at the feet of Haller, from Rice’s pass forward. But on 56 minutes, West Ham did take the lead, Bowen and Fornals found space in the attacking third, the latter saw an effort blocked by Basham, but the ball fell kindly for HALLER who fired past Ramsdale from the edge of the box. Robinson replaced Ampadu, who looked to have picked up a knock, before Brewster was introduced with Norwood leaving the action, a move that prompted a chance in formation for the Blades. Playing behind the front two, McGoldrick found space for a shot, but it was fractionally too high. On the break, the visitors threatened though, Rice advanced forward,

before Haller steered his effort wide before Rice headed against the bar from Cresswell’s leftwing corner. Chasing the game, the Blades forced a mistake from Masuaku on the left and from Brewster’s through ball McBurnie controlled well and advanced towards goal before unleashing an effort that beat Fabianski but unfortunately rattled against the woodwork. Three minutes of added time were signalled and despite having enjoyed plenty of possession in the moments previous, the visitors saw the majority of those minutes out in the bottom corner, running down the clock to leave with the points.

Our second half display was much better than the first Rotherham United boss Paul Warne conceded that his side’s first half display cost them a chance of picking up any points at the Liberty Stadium as Matt Grimes’ 28th minute strike proved the difference for Swansea City. The Millers manager explained that the opening 45 minutes fell below his usual high standards, but did continue to admit he was pleased with his team’s second half reaction, as they came close on a number of occasions to an equaliser – whilst also having a good shout for penalty turned down. “Mixed is probably the nicest way to put it,” Warne said of his feelings at full-time. “I thought first half we were as poor as we have been this season, unfortunately. That is down to me, I pick the team so it is on my shoulders. “I just didn’t think we looked like ‘us’. “I didn’t think we won enough 50/50s, headers and we didn’t play with any confidence. “I think if you watch the game on iFollow you probably heard my voice more than anyone’s. “I was frustrated with our first half performance. The lads have been great for me so I’m not here to hammer them, but I thought we weren’t as good as we could be. “I knew the five subs would help me on one day, so I used four of them today. “As the game went on I thought we got better. Swansea still had chances to score but I think if you watch the game back people will agree that is a handball. “The subs came on and had a real positive impact which they’re supposed to do. “We underperformed but we still nearly got a draw. I’m not trying to paper over the cracks - I was disappointed first half - but we can take something from the second [half ]. “We put some good balls in and Mickel and Trev livened us up down the left. Vass did and Smudge was a good presence up top and we caused more problems. “It wasn’t a game to really play football and sometimes you’ve just got to put it down the sides and do what you can. Unfortunately today that wasn’t enough to win a point and we just have to plaster them up and get them ready for the next challenge which is just around the corner.”

Moore pleased with Rovers resilience Darren Moore hailed the work rate of his players who kept pushing for their last minute equaliser against Sunderland. Fejiri Okenabirhie got his sixth Rovers goal of the season which helped the side snatch a point from the promotion-chasing Black Cats. Moore said: “We expected it be a tight game like it was. Both teams had half chances and both teams created one or two opportunities. The way the players kept at it made it more rewarding in the end. So I am really pleased for them. “You have to give credit to Sunderland, they set their stall out and they were very strong and hard to break down. That’s why it makes our equaliser more impressive because it’s a testament to the lads on how they kept going and kept probing. “Lets not discredit what Sunderland are about – they are a good team. If you look at the players on the pitch we’ve come up against a good team. It was the same last season when we came up against them. I knew today would be tight with real small margins and that’s exactly how the game panned out.” The game saw Joe Lumley make his Rovers debut after joining the club on an emergency loan deal from QPR, where he is a teammate of former Rovers goalkeeper Seny Dieng. He added: “We want to keep continuity with goalkeepers so we will be looking to keep Joe Lumley for as long as we can. “When you sign an emergency goalkeeper you have to play them. So I have spoken to Louis Jones and he is understanding of the situation. We can’t go through the season with just one goalkeeper.”
