campaign to support the high street After a devastating year for high street businesses, Sheffield City Council has this week launched Its Make Yourself at Home for Christmas campaign giving people lots of ideas on how to support Sheffield businesses this festive season. The phrase use it or lose it has never been more important as businesses prepare for the crunch period in the run up to Christmas. The ripple effect of just one property closure can be far reaching as local businesses are not just employers, but also

customers of other local businesses. Recent research shows that for every £1 spent with local businesses, around 50p remains in the local economy; spend that same £1 with online giants or major chains, and only around 5p filters back. Make Yourself at Home at Christmas seeks to share all the fantastic local produce, bespoke items and experiences from Sheffield’s creative businesses on one online resource www. welcometosheffield.co.uk/ makeyourselfathome, with ideas and experiences being added regularly.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council said: “This is the most important Christmas campaign the city has ever embarked on. Independent businesses are the heart of our communities. A huge part of Sheffield’s character and charm is the amazing local businesses we have on our high streets, and with Small Business Saturday coming up this weekend it’s more important than ever that we support local retail and those restaurants and bars, although forced to close

due to Tier 3 restrictions, that have prepared some fantastic experiences and gift ideas to bring some Sheffield Christmas cheer into people’s homes.” Brad Smith, owner of Greek Wraps, said: “The majority of our customers tend to be from the local area and we’ve really felt the community pull together this year to support us and other businesses. It’s great that restrictions are easing and more things are opening up, but I’d like to encourage everyone to remember what’s on your doorstep

as life gets back to normal. We all look out for each other here and I’d like to thank our customers for supporting us. We’re still here, so please do carry on visiting us.”

Sheffield City Council have also announced an extension to free parking across the city in the run up to Christmas, which will be available Saturdays and Sundays in December up until Christmas in Council pay and display car parks and on-street parking.

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice recognising early dementia signs

Becoming forgetful from time to time is a relatively normal part of the aging process. However, there are some cases where an increasingly severe memory loss, amongst several other symptoms, can be an early sign of dementia. Recent reports have highlighted a failing sense of direction in particular as a key early indicator of the condition, which researchers are now using to attempt to design the first ever test for dementia, facilitated by a mobile game. Dementia is a general term which describes a decline in mental ability, with impairments to thinking, communicating and memory. This can begin to interfere with daily life. There are currently 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, according to the Alzheimer’s Society– a number which is set to rise to over a million in the next ten years. There are hundreds of types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most well-known and common condition, making up around 60-80% of cases. There are a wide range of symptoms that an individual may experience. Each person is affected differently, with no two people experiencing the same range or impact of symptoms. Personality, social situation, and general health are all significant factors in determining the impact dementia can have on a person. There are ways to recognise the onset of dementia in a loved one. According to the NHS, here are seven early signs: 1. Memory loss One of the most common early signs of dementia is memory loss which begins to disrupt daily life – particularly short term memory changes, such as forgetting recently learnt information, forgetting messages, or struggling to remember routes or names. 2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks

Taking on familiar tasks that are normally carried out on a daily basis at home, work or as leisure activities, such as getting dressed in the morning, can become increasingly difficult to complete. 3. Confusion and disorientation with time and place A failing sense of direction, spatial orientation and the resulting confusion are common signs of the onset of dementia. This can include losing track of the passage of time or forgetting important dates and events, as well as those living with dementia forgetting where they are, regardless of how familiar their location may be. They may also struggle to recall how they got there and how they can return. Disorientation can make it harder to follow a series of directions or instructions. 4. Changes in mood, behaviour and personality As dementia tends to affect judgement, visible changes to a loved one’s mood and personality can be a common sign of the condition. They may be exhibiting rapid and unprovoked mood swings, with depression being a typical sign of early dementia. 5. Problems with communication Simple, day-to-day conversations can become a struggle for those experiencing early signs of dementia. They can face difficulties with words, expression and explanation, and they may find it hard to join or follow conversation. 6. Apathy They may begin to withdraw from or lose interest in work, social activities, or their once-loved hobbies. 7. Loss of Judgement Loss of judgement can be a sign and a symptom of dementia. A loved one may be showing signs of making inappropriate decisions, as a result of being unable to evaluate and consider their actions and the consequences as before.

local charities receive xmas help from jack’s

Charities directly supporting the Sheffield community have been invited to apply to the Jack’s Supports scheme to receive some well-deserved funding. Jack’s Supermarket, on Kilner Way, part of the Tesco family, launched its Jack’s Supports scheme to donate proceeds from the sale of carrier bags to local good causes. Normally, four local charities are shortlisted and receive a £250 donation. But after such a difficult year, Jack’s has decided that no charity will miss out and is offering even more support by donating £400 to every charity that applied. This includes 68 community groups local to its 12 stores, which is worth over £27,000 in donations! The five groups from the Sheffield area to receive the funding were: The Ethel Trust Community Barge, Friends of Watercliffe Meadow, Little Art Heroes, Marlcliffe School Gardening Club and Mind Body Connect. Caitlin Holland, from Little Art Heroes, said: “We support young asylum seekers and refugees through creative and community building activities. Thank you to Jack’s Supports for your generosity, with

your help we can continue to do this.” Rob Rooney, from Friends of Watercliffe Meadow, said: “We aim to bring people together to visually improve the local community. The local community is important to us, as we know it is to Jack’s.” Since launching Jack’s Supports, which was created to donate proceeds from the sale of carrier bags to local good causes, Jack’s has received 600,000 votes and donated £184,000 to local organisations. Daniel Saragea, Store Manager of Jack’s Sheffield, said: “The Jack’s Supports scheme has been running for a while now and it’s great to see how many local organisations have benefitted from our donations. It’s wonderful we have been able to provide support for all organisations who have applied this year as it’s important to everyone at Jack’s to be able to give back to the local community who have always been so kind to us. We strongly recommend anyone who’s considering applying to definitely get involved.” To be considered for the next round of Jack’s Supports apply by visiting https://jackssupports.org.uk/.

Plea to respect staff who are working to improve the city Sheffield City Council is urging residents across the city to increase their awareness, patience and respect for the workforce of two of its biggest service partners, Amey, the Council’s highway maintenance contractor delivering the Streets Ahead programme, and Veolia, the Council’s Waste Management contractor. Streets Ahead includes an annual programme of road and pavement surfacing, and since 2012, more than 850 miles of roads and 1,730 miles of pavements in Sheffield have been resurfaced. Inevitably, roadworks can cause delays due to closures and sometimes have to take place during the day, but where possible, works are completed overnight, especially on busy main roads. Veolia provide waste and recycling collection services for all 250,000 households in Sheffield, emptying more than 11 million bins each year. The bin collection process means that large refuse collection vehicles are stationary or slow moving on streets, and this can cause short delays to road users who have to wait behind the vehicles. Veolia also operate Sheffield’s 5 Household Waste Recycling Centres, and although residents are advised not to queue on roads or face fines, the popularity of the sites means that queuing traffic can cause delays. Unfortunately, this doesn’t deter some motorists from ignoring road closures and stationary vehicles, often mounting the pavement to try to get through, regardless of the dangers posed to themselves, other members of the public as well as Streets Ahead and Veolia workers. A recent example occurred in the south-east of the city where work was being carried out overnight. The Streets Ahead Supervisor reported a car that had mounted the pavement driving around the road closure point. When they were unable to drive any further, the driver got out of their car, threw traffic cones and barriers at operatives whilst shouting abuse and causing damage to nearby vehicles. This incident, along with every one that occurs, was reported to the police. Whilst physical violence of this nature is less prevalent, the most common issue faced by the Streets Ahead and Veolia workforce is verbal abuse, as Darren Butt, Account Director for Streets Ahead says: “It’s a frequent occurrence unfortunately. Our workforce is spat upon, have objects such as bottles thrown at them, and are frequently abused just for doing their jobs. “Even during these difficult times, when we are continuing to deliver essential services on behalf of the city, this behaviour has continued. Darren goes on to say, “We hope to further raise awareness of the issues and ask that everyone who comes into contact with our workforce, whether on foot or whilst driving, treats them with respect.” Councillor Mark Jones, Cabinet Member for Environment, Streetscene and Climate Change, said: ”I am enormously grateful for the hard work and dedication shown by Streets Ahead and Veolia workers

Although traffic delays can be frustrating for everyone, the very least we expect for our workforce is to return home to their families after a day’s work, without having their lives put at risk or being subjected to any physical and verbal abuse by the reckless behaviour of a very small minority of people, simply for doing their job. “I ask that any residents who witness this type of behaviour towards any of our staff, or our partners staff, please report this to South Yorkshire Police to help prevent such incidents.” Amey has launched its ‘Stamp It Out’ campaign, asking as many people as possible to sign a petition to change the law, to give roadworkers and those working on the frontline greater protection against abuse and violence. The petition needs 10,000 signatures for the subject to be debated in Parliament. To get involved now with the Stamp it Out Campaign and sign the petition, follow the link here https://petition. parliament.uk/petitions/548480 There are a number of ways to report an incident to South Yorkshire Police. Soapwatch Coronation Street There are three one hour specials this week to celebrate Coronation Street’s 60th Anniversary! Alya lock horns once more as the aftermath of Yasmeen’s trial hits Weatherfield. Geoff is up to his old tricks again when he attacks Alya at Speed Daal before sloshing lighter fluid around number 6 and setting it alight. With Alya following him to the house a dramatic rooftop stand off ensues, has Geoff got his ultimate revenge on the Nazirs? Gary Windass enters the bistro with the signed factory contract for Ray. Hearing Faye’s muffled cries from the office, Gary orders him to open the door. Faye emerges in tears, her blouse torn, and flees. The protestors celebrate halting the progress of the bulldozer, but their joy is short-lived when a massive long-arm digger turns up. Kevin is baffled as to how Ray got wind of their plans – is the game up for Debbie? Peter is excitedly forging ahead with plans for the wedding but is concerned when Jenny mentions seeing Carla calling at Daniel’s flat and his paranoia goes into overdrive. Spotting Carla and Daniel in hushed conversation in the Rovers, Peter furiously accuses them of being lovers. Carla realises Peter’s gone out and a bottle of whisky is missing. She’s relieved when he returns, not having touched the whisky. But as she tries to talk to him, Peter refuses to listen, unscrews the bottle and defiantly takes a swig. Leanne’s taken aback when Sam recites a list of reasons she might grow to like him if she sticks around. Emmerdale Harriet is shocked to hear there are plans to exhume the body buried with Malone. Will plans to act as the bishop is due to arrive. Laurel and Jay receive devastating news about their unborn baby. Rhona is placed in an impossible position as Jai & Laurel reach a sad decision. Eastenders Kat plots to flee Walford after Kush’s betrayal. Will is caught red handed by Suki stealing from the Minute Mart. Jack continues to lead the way on the investigation into Ian’s shock attack. As fellow police officer Callum Highway piles on the pressure, it looks like his line of enquiry could be striking closer to home. Have they solved the case already or is the truth yet to come out?

mixed feelings for tony following loss

Tony Pulis praised the endeavour and work ethic of his team but rued the result as the Owls fell to a late double blow at Norwich. Josh Windass gave the Owls a second half lead before strikes from Josh Martin and Max Aarons gave the Canaries three points. Pulis said: “The lads have worked ever so hard today but we’re all disappointed because we could have won that game. We had chances to put the game out of site and didn’t take them. And then we have to grind games out, although this performance wasn’t just about grinding it out, we played well. I think the lads do suffer with a little bit of a lack of confidence but that will come with winning games. And today, we should not have lost this game but it’s a team not used to grinding games out, but as the confidence builds, so will results.” He added: “It’s too soon right now to think about Huddersfield. But we have to because of the schedule. We’ll see if we have any bumps or knocks from today over the next couple of days. This is another big game for us, but they are all big games. There’s very little time for rest, but it’s the same for everybody and we’ve just got to get on with it.” Dominic Iorfa made further steps on his road to full fitness over the weekend with another 53 minutes in the tank. After playing 45 against Reading and then 53 in the clash with Norwich at Carrow Road on Saturday, manager Tony Pulis is pleased with his progress. There was a change of role for the 25-year-old in Norfolk, with Iorfa swapping his usual place in the backline for a midfield spot. Pulis explained: “Sometimes you are asking the lads to do stuff that they are not used to but he went out there

and did his damnedest. I thought he played really well. It’s a position he’s not used to but we wanted that presence there. I wanted to have a look at him in there with the quality and size of him. Set plays are so important in this league and he’s another person that can defend that area really well. We needed him to do that and he showed some good signs in there. He breaks forward quickly and he has got tremendous pace and energy but he was tiring. He has not played for a while and he has had that injury and we want to protect him as much as we can. He needed that hour, he’s another player that needs match time.” Meanwhile Josh Windass has hailed the impact of team mate Adam Reach. Wednesday took on the Terriers on Tuesday nightsmarting from their narrow reverse at league leaders Norwich and Windass believes we have the tool to unlock the hosts’ defence this evening – and none more so than Reach. He said: “We all know the saying about class being permanent and that is Reachy – a class player. He’s had a couple of assists recently and scored himself so some people think he’s returned to form but ask the lads and they will tell you he hasn’t been out of form. He puts the work in week in, week out, but you only seem to get the headlines with the assists or the goals. But he’s a quality player – the cross at Norwich for my goal wasn’t just service, it was ridiculous, world class. I got a bit of eye contact with him and that’s why I made that little darting run, and quality of the cross….well, I couldn’t miss. That’s what Reachy can do. He’s the kind of player who can make things happen.” And Windass saw signs of encouragement to take into Tuesday’s game at Huddersfield. He said: “We were hard done by on Saturday. We scored one, could’ve had at least one more, but it didn’t run for us and we lost the game. The lads put a real shift in but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have played well against some of the best teams in the division and we can see the positives. We just have to keep improving. We are trying to do that every day in training and in the games. We’ve picked up our performance levels and the mood is good. We have another game on Tuesday, Huddersfield are a pressing team with a lot of experience but the manager is so organised and will have a game plan to try and get the win.” Carrow Road hosted supporters for the first time this season and Windass is relishing a similar prospect at Hillsborough when possible: “It makes such a difference. Even in the warm-ups it was miles better. There were only 2,000 fans there but there was a good atmosphere. It will be amazing to have or fans back at Hillsborough, I can’t wait. The fans are everything. We want everyone back as soon as we can but of course we can only be guided by the regulations.”

frustrated by late loss of points

Chris Wilder was understandably frustrated following Sunday’s late loss against Leicester City at Bramall Lane. The Blades manager felt his side performed pretty well against the high-flying Foxes and deserved a share of the spoils but admitted they only have themselves to blame for the manner of the defeat and Jamie Vardy’s last-gasp strike. Wilder was annoyed by how his side turned the ball over and says it was inevitable they would be punished by Vardy, with the Blades boss feeling his players had more than competed throughout the contest against a top end Premier League side. Oli McBurnie scored his first goal of the season and led the line admirably again which drew praise from his boss, who added he was delighted for the Scottish international who has been the subject of some harsh criticism in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Wilder is disappointed to lose the services of Lys Mousset again after striker rolled his ankle in training, with the French forward offering the side a different dimension as games open up according to the boss. Quality and composure in big moments has proven to be United’s downfall this term, with Wilder admitting his side have been punished all season for individual errors. However one player has taken advantage of the defensive problems at the Lane to stake his claim for regular inclusion. Kean Bryan admits that his first two years at Sheffield United have been tough. Bryan signed from Manchester City in the summer of 2018 ahead of the season the Blades were promoted to the Premier League. Yet the defender played just once that term in the shock FA Cup third round defeat to non-league Barnet. Bryan made just two other match day squads in 2018/19 and the following campaign wasn’t much better. Once again the 24-year-

old was limited to cup appearances and was sent on loan to Bolton Wanderers in League One in January. Yet a defensive crisis for United in 2020/21 has seen Bryan finally and unexpectedly get his chance in the top flight. The centre-back has started the last two league matches on the left side of a back three. Although the Blades have lost both, Bryan has looked solid in defeats to West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City. “On a personal level, it has been a tough time for me and I have not been in the frame in terms of playing games,” Bryan said. “But that has been because I am behind Jack O’Connell and he is an unbelievable player. When they are keeping clean sheets like they were when he was in the team, I could not really expect to play, but just keep my head down and work as hard as I could on the training pitch. That is what I did in the off-season and, thankfully, I am getting the chance to play games in the team now. It was tough times for me, I am not going to shy away from that. When I signed, I was expecting to play and it was gutting for me.” At the start of this term, Bryan was probably fourth choice after O’Connell. Yet luck plays a big role in football and players just have to make sure they grab their chance when it comes along. Bryan certainly seems to be doing that. Which most people, himself included, probably didn’t envisage at the beginning of the season. Things on the pitch are not going well currently, but for Bryan at least one positive has come out of it.

blades united against prostate cancer

A group of United’s non-playing staff have already raised well in excess of their £10,000 target for Prostate Cancer UK - but they haven’t finished yet! Congratulations to Nathan Winder, Lee McMahon, Ruth Titterton, Josh Kirk, Rob Rayner, Nick Travis, Chris Senior, Paul Evans, Adam Geelan and Hayden Whiting, all of whom are part of Chris Wilder’s backroom staff, along with Academy quartet Paul Heckingbottom, Rhys Carr, Mark Pease and Morgan Wright for their efforts throughout last month. And although the daily cycling and running may have ended at the end of November, the fundraising hasn’t and for a small donation to the charity, Blades fans could bag themselves some signed Prostate Cancer UK merchandise. The club has nine tops to raffle and fans wishing to enter are politely asked to make a donation of between £1 up to a maximum £5 and leave their full name and the following message ‘Congratulations, please enter me into the raffle to support Prostate Cancer’ in the comments box. To make a donation, please visit www.justgiving. com/fundraising/SUFC1STTEAMPROSTATEUNITED Winners will be announced on Tuesday 15th December at sufc.co.uk and across the club’s social media platforms.

good SUFC 2020/21 weekend for oldies at rovers

unhappy away trip for millers

Millers manager Paul Warne assessed his side’s display after a 3-1 defeat away to Coventry City. Rotherham United had a mountain to climb having conceded twice in the first 12 minutes on what was certainly an ‘off-day’ for Warne and his men. “It’s hugely disappointing,” said Warne. “We came into this off the back of two good performances, playing the same system. Robbo (Mark Robins) matched us up and, in fairness, in every department they were superior to us – which hurts me to say. But I just thought they got to the second balls quicker than we did, they got to the first contacts in both boxes better than we did. And they just were stronger and more physical, which I don’t like to say about my team. Today, we just weren’t at the races. I’m not trying to cover up a bad day. It was a bad. Their victory, even though we missed chances late on, could have been even greater. So it’s something we need to look at tomorrow as a group and then quickly adjust for Tuesday night. Well I always think energy is a big issue in team sport, but not at the start. I get it after 60 or 70 minutes and, in fairness, Robbo’s players have played the same amount as we have. So there’s no excuse there. I thought we started the game really well, we looked right in the ascendency then one ball causes confusion with my centre-halves and we just didn’t defend it. After that we’re on a rocky road. It’s not like us to be beaten up a little bit, but today it looked like we were.” The Millers did threaten somewhat late on as Dan Barlaser blasted home his third penalty of the season after fellow substitute Kyle Vassell was upended by the goalkeeper. “I was happy to get them in at half-time at just 2-0 because it could have been more,” continued Warne. “At the start of the second half there was a bit more effort and a bit more drive but I honestly didn’t think we were going to score. We weren’t creating enough chances so we changed to a three-up then went to a 4-4-2 – we had to because we were chasing the game. Out of all the players, Vass was probably my best one as he was the one really trying to drive the team forward. He won the penalty and Dan despatched it.” Warne discussed Joe Mattock’s injury as the defender was withdrawn at half-time following a collision. “To show how disappointed I was, I haven’t even asked. I haven’t asked after the game, I’ll do that in a minute. I think and presume it’s an ankle – I just presume, I don’t know.”
