twinkle and celebrate Christmas in Sheffield As 2020 draws to a close, we’re all in need of some festive cheer, and although we can’t celebrate Christmas in the usual style there’s still plenty of ways to feel festive in Sheffield. We might be missing the warmth of the Fargate Christmas Market, plus the usual winter pop-up bars but with twinkling lights, a fun children’s trail and even a Christmas Tree festival, Sheffield city centre is still fabulously festive. Fargate, Pinstone Street, Leopold Street, Surrey Street, Barkers Pool, Division Street and Devonshire Street are gorgeously glowing with illuminations, while the
giant bauble and present, along with the brand new ‘Sheffield’ sign, light up the Peace Gardens. The Winter Garden’s beautiful blooms are also enhanced with up-lights and an enchanting fairy village. In addition, Sheffield’s parks, which have provided muchneeded respite throughout the year, will feature trees, buildings and entrances lit in a festive theme making them even more beautiful and welcoming for everyone in our communities. Endcliffe Park, Botanical Gardens, Weston Park, General Cemetery, Hillsborough Park, High Hazels Park and Norfolk
Park will all see have a new festive sparkle and in the heart of communities across Sheffield Christmas trees will be popping up this week. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Christmas is a time when naturally we reflect on the year we’ve had and feel gratitude for the many things we all take for granted. This year those values are more important than ever and as I look back at the remarkable things Sheffielders have achieved and endured I am moved with pride and appreciation. “I know that this Christmas we won’t be celebrating in the usual way, but we still
have much to be grateful for and plenty to get excited about. I hope everyone in the city makes the most of the little things this year and shares in the festive steel spirit that shines so brightly in Sheffield. “We still have some way to go and yet more challenges to overcome before we can resume normality, but after leading this great city for 10 years I know that in true Sheffield style we will come through this stronger than ever. I want to take this, my final opportunity, to wish each and every one of you a very happy and healthy Christmas and the very best for the new year ahead.”
To make sure everyone remains as safe as possible and to prevent transmission of Covid-19 people are reminded to stay vigilant while celebrating this year. If out and about shopping or meeting with others always adhere to the latest Government restrictions, relating to the current Tier.
At this stage the Sheffield City Region is in Tier 3 the full list of restrictions can be found on the Gov.uk website. For all Sheffield’s festive ideas and activities visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/ christmas

Plenty of festive cheer for residents at Country Court’s Sheffield Care & Nursing Homes Staff and residents at Abbey Grange Nursing Home in Fir Vale, Sheffield and Belmont House Nursing Home in Stocksbridge are preparing to celebrate Christmas a little differently this year. Staff are doing everything they can to ensure the season of goodwill prevails and residents have the opportunity to make the most of the festivities. Residents have been getting creative and making decorations for their home. The crafting sessions have been a great opportunity to reminisce about Christmas in years gone by, as well as decorate the home. Staff will be entering the residents’ creations in the Country Court ‘Deck the halls Creative Christmas Competition’. Throughout December, residents across the group’s 33 homes will be taking part in weekly festive crafts from baking to making decorations and singing carols, with a prize of a new year party for the home that makes the best overall effort. Residents at Belmont House have been busy painting wooden decorations for their Christmas tree as part of their entry into the competition. Abbey Grange and Belmont House are also taking part in a Christmas Message Exchange, “We have invited schools, pre-schools and other community groups in our local areas to send our residents a Christmas message.” Said Home Manager, Joanne Coldwell. “As we are not able to invite the community into our home this year, we thought this would be a great way to exchange Christmas wishes. We’ve already received a wonderful hamper of goodies from The Friendship Pub in Stocksbridge”. The Hospitality Team at Abbey Grange has been at the heart of the Christmas preparations with plans for the big day well underway. “We’ve been consulting with the residents about our Christmas Day menu.” Said Louise Wilson, Chef Manager at Abbey Grange Care Home. “We want to ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy, whether they prefer a traditional roast turkey or something a little bit different. Food is such a big part of any Christmas celebration; it’s a day
when everyone’s favourite dishes are on the menu, and all tastes and preferences catered for.” In line with new government guidelines, residents will be able to see visitors to Belmont House and Abbey Grange in their new COVID-safe visitors’ areas. Visits are following the current government guidance and have been a welcome return to the home. Between each visit, the whole area is sanitised and prepared for the next visitor. “Our residents have enjoyed seeing their loved ones again.” said Kyra Travis, Area Manager, “It’s so important for people’s wellbeing, especially at this time of year.” Traditionally Christmas is an opportunity for Country Court directors to visit Care Homes in Sheffield to say ‘thank you’ in-person to staff teams for all their hard work and to celebrate with their Staff Awards. This year the Awards will be going ahead virtually; with nominations made online, the judges have reviewed the entries and will be announcing the winners in a series of virtual award ceremonies in December. “The Country Court Board of Directors will be taking the opportunity to say thank you to all staff for their hard work during 2020. This year, more than ever, the staff family has pulled together, supporting each other and our residents. We are delighted to reward their efforts” Said Alykhan Kachra, Co-CEO. To find out more about how residents are celebrating Christmas in 2020 take a look at our Facebook page @belmonthousenursinghome or @abbeygrangenursinghome or contact Home Manager Kerry Peach at Abbey Grange Nursing Home on 01142 560046 or Joanne Coldwell on 01142 831030 at Belmont House Nursing Home.

top tips for a healthier christmas
Heart research UK have published a list of tips for the general public aimed at promoting healthier holiday season. Christmas is a time when we can be tempted t o overindulge, but it is possible to enjoy the festive period without it impacting on our health and waistline. Wherever you are spending Christmas this year, these tips can help you make it a healthy and happy one. • Don’t let food become the main focus this Christmas. Instead of spending days in the kitchen baking cakes, biscuits and puddings, why not invest your time in preparing fun games to play on Christmas day, decorating the house, getting in touch with people who are spending Christmas alone or planning a Christmas Day walk. • Instead of buying gifts that are high in calories, such as chocolates, jams, sweets, biscuits and alcohol, choose non-edible gifts instead. How about buying the kids things that will get them active, such as a football, skipping rope, skateboard, bike, hula hoop or trampoline. • It can be difficult to avoid the consumerism that has taken over Christmas and you can easily buy too much food and drink for the festive season. Having too much can encourage overindulgence and lead to unnecessary waste. • Try to be realistic about how much people will eat and drink and avoid overdoing it when you are shopping and cooking. This will also help you to save on your shopping bill!

• Watch your alcohol consumption at Christmas. It is fine to enjoy a drink, but try not to have too much. Alcoholic drinks can be high in calories, which can lead to weight-gain. During the Christmas period, it can be tempting to start drinking earlier in the day, which can result in you drinking more. Try to plan in advance how much you will drink and try to stay off the alcohol until later in the day. You can get support with your drinking by visiting the Drinkaware website: www.drinkaware.co.uk/tools/self-assessment • Try not to spend too long sitting in front of the TV this Christmas. Wrap up warm and head out for a brisk walk to burn off some calories and get your heart rate up. Why not get out in the fresh air with any new outdoor gifts, such as a football, frisbee or bike. • Look after your mental health this Christmas. Christmas can be a time of stress, anxiety and loneliness for many people. This year, people may struggle more with mental health problems due to the pandemic. Mind provides information and support for people experiencing mental health issues: www.mind.org.uk/ Heart Research UK is the charity dedicated to your heart. They inspire and invest in pioneering medical research, ground-breaking training and education, and in communities to improve their heart health for themselves. For over 50 years they have driven advancements in the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease to benefit patients as soon as possible. In the last 10 years, Heart Research UK has funded over £10.2m in medical research in hospitals and universities across the UK, as well as £2.2m on innovative community-based lifestyle projects to improve the heart health of the nation. NHS reminder issued on repeat prescriptions
With the festive season fast approaching, Yorkshire’s NHS 111 service is reminding people to order and collect their repeat prescriptions before GP surgeries and pharmacies close for the Christmas and New Year holiday. Hundreds of patients call NHS 111 during the festive season because they have run out of their regular medication and this can lead to unnecessary worry for themselves and increase pressure on busy urgent care and out-of-hours NHS services. Dr Eithne Cummins of Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, which runs the NHS 111 service in our area, is encouraging people to make sure they have sufficient stocks of their medication to last them over the festive break. She said: “The NHS 111 service will be very busy over the Christmas and New Year period, so we’re reminding those people who need repeat medication to manage long-

In the busy build-up to the holidays, it’s easy to forget and this can lead to problems once GP practices close for a few days. If you think you might need to replenish your medication stocks to see you through Christmas and the New Year, please save yourself the worry and re-order your prescription while there is still plenty of time for it to be processed and dispensed. Not only will you be helping yourself, you’ll also be helping the NHS by reducing pressure on busy urgent care services over the festive period.” Check out health advice on treating common winter illnesses on the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/Livewell/winterhealth
council calls for ban on pavement parking
Sheffield City Council have called on the Government to give local authorities more powers to target pavement parking in our response to a Department for Transport consultation. Councillor Bob Johnson has written to the Government to suggest that a nuanced approach should be taken in order to give councils more discretion as to where they enforce pavement parking, such as in areas subject to repeat offences or where parked cars pose a danger to pedestrians and other road users. Under the current regulations, councils have little power to deal with pavement parking, which is often the responsibility of local neighbourhood policing teams. Under new proposals, local authorities would have the ability to provide pavement parking enforcement themselves and respond to complaints directly. Councillor Johnson said: “Pavement parking is a growing problem in Sheffield and we need to find a solution to tackle this in a practical, realistic way. One of the main causes of pavement parking in the city is the
lack of parking space outside homes, with some communities in Sheffield consisting of up to 50% terrace housing. We know that implementing a complete parking ban in areas such as this would be unfeasible and changes need to be made sensitively, so we are asking for powers to respond to the feedback from residents and tackle persistent and dangerous parking as quickly and effectively as possible. Alongside our response to this consultation we continue to develop our strategy for improving the problem of pavement parking and will explore initiatives such as a ban on pavement parking in the city centre, where we are introducing new measures to support walking, cycling, and by improving public transport infrastructure. I hope that the Department for Transport takes our comments on board and uses this as an opportunity to overhaul the current regulations so that we can do much more to tackle this widespread issue that adversely affects so many of our residents.” The Department for Transport’s consultation on pavement parking closed on the 22 November.

ones in person. It’s been incredibly sad. But it’s also been amazing to see how hard working our staff have been. They have really pulled together in such difficult circumstances and I couldn’t be prouder. “It would be amazing if we could also raise some money for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity too. If people hear it and love it, please donate to the charity’s Christmas campaign. It really will make a difference. ‘Christmas Courage’ includes the voices of 11 Trust colleagues, who all recorded their vocals in a makeshift recording studio at Rotherham Hospital. The song is being released to help raise funds for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity’s Virtual Christmas Collection Bucket challenge. All the funds you help to raise will enable the charity to continue to fund the added extras which really make a difference to patients and their families in Rotherham and which the NHS would ordinarily not be able to afford. This could include everything from toys and an entertainer for the Children's Ward to lifesaving equipment.

You’ve heard of Band Aid and Children in Need, now behold the next big collaboration – the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s charity Christmas single! The original song, called Christmas Courage, is based on a poem written by Activities Coordinator, Maggie Boldan, and has been brought to life by graphic designer and budding music producer, John Slater. The song aims to raise morale and festive cheer among staff, and to also raise funds for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity. Maggie, who has been keeping the Trust’s spirits up throughout the Covid period with her fantastic, funny and often touching poems, wrote the lyrics, while John, known for his musical talent and creativity, arranged the song and video. Maggie said: “When John Slater asked me to write a poem he could then turn into a song, I looked to the staff and our patients for inspiration. I’m really pleased with how the song has turned out. I cried when I heard it for the first time. It’s absolutely amazing to be involved in making something like this. I’ve never done it before, it’s brilliant. It’s just the morale booster we need right now and I hope it makes people smile.” John, who has worked around the clock to get the song ready for release, added: “We now know that most Christmas songs and videos are recorded much earlier in the year, but we were inspired to transform Maggie’s wonderful poem into a song, so we didn’t feel deterred by the tight deadline. “We’ve worked around the clock to make it happen within days and thanks to some amazing singers from across the Trust who volunteered to lend their voices to the song, we’re managed to record it in time for Christmas. “It’s been an incredibly difficult year for our hardworking colleagues and we know that Covid-19 has touched the lives of many people in Rotherham. We hope our song lifts people’s spirits in the run up to Christmas. Thanks to all our colleagues who answered our call to sing at short notice. We hope you love listening to it – we’ve had a lot of fun making it.” Maggie, who has worked on the Covid-19 wards, has seen first-hand how hard everyone has worked. She said: “It’s been emotional and heart-wrenching at times because our patients can’t see their loved

Sheffield Cathedral Christmas Tree Festival brings festive cheer to the city
This year, Sheffield Cathedral has once again been at the heart of the city’s Christmas celebrations with a delightful display of beautifully decorated trees which have been safely spaced throughout the nave. More than 30 Sheffield businesses, charities and schools have come together to sponsor their own tree and lift the spirits of the city by taking part in a magical new Christmas Tree Festival at Sheffield Cathedral. Everyone taking part has been invited to decorate their own 5–6-foot tree which have been supplied with lights by the Cathedral. “This time last year we were welcoming 11,500 people to the Cathedral to see our first light show. Of course we are disappointed not to be able to host a similar event this Christmas but we hope the Christmas Tree Festival will make up for it a little” says Ben Rossi, development manager for Sheffield Cathedral. “We are extremely grateful to all the local businesses,
schools and charities who have pulled together and supported the Cathedral in bringing the festival to life. If all goes well, we will host another festival next Christmas. You never know, it may become an annual event which forms part of Sheffield’s Christmas celebrations every year.” Simon Tomlinson, director of Sheffield technology company etiCloud who are sponsoring the festival added “It’s been an absolute pleasure to support Sheffield Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival. We just wanted to help bring some festive cheer to everyone at the end of an otherwise very difficult year.” The Cathedral is open but operating with restricted visitor numbers and visiting hours. Visitors to the festival will be asked to follow Covid-19 safety measures put in place by the Cathedral. Anyone wishing to visit the festival is encouraged to check the latest visitor information and opening times on the Cathedral’s website – www.sheffieldcathedral. org. If you do not feel comfortable visiting you can see a virtual tour of the festival on the Cathedral’s website. Whether you visit the festival in person or online you will be encouraged to vote for your favourite tree with prizes for the winning two trees with local good causes to benefit. At the end of the festival all the trees will be disposed of environmentally with a donation being made to The Children’s Hospital Charity.

Business grants increased and deadlines extended To reflect the Tier 3 restrictions in Sheffield, there will be an increase in the grant amounts awarded to businesses in the hospitality, accommodation and leisure sectors who are successful in applying for the national lockdown and supply chain grants. The new Tier 3 restrictions have come into effect at what would usually be one of the busiest times for many businesses, and an increase in grant funding of up to £6,000 has been brought in to reflect this. This has been welcomed by the business community, and businesses are encouraged to apply now if they haven’t already. Businesses can still apply for a Lockdown Grant, which includes the national lockdown period from 5th November and, for some businesses, the initial Tier 2 and Tier 3 period back to 14th October. There is currently no deadline to apply for this grant and where an application has been successful, payments will be topped up without the need for further applications if the business meets the grant criteria. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council said: ‘We are delighted that we have been able to increase the levels of grants available to some businesses at such a critical time. We know that businesses may still be confused about whether they can apply for a grant and which grant applies to them. It’s just one application per business- you do not need to apply for different schemes. We have tried to streamline the grant application process as much as possible so it’s one application. “Tier 2 and 3 ‘top ups’ will be automatically applied to businesses who are eligible.” Hayley and Mike Stones, owners of Dore Café, recently applied for the Business Lockdown Grant:
‘Our café is closed so our customers can’t sit in but we have changed to provide a takeaway service - we recently applied for the Business Lockdown Grant after learning that we could even though we were open for takeaway- because our main area of business is forced to close. If you, like us, were forced to close under Tier 3 restrictions or lockdown please apply for the grant.’ The Supply Chain Grant also benefits from increased grant amounts and the application deadline has been extended from 24th December to the 15th January. This is the only grant to currently have an application deadline. This grant is for supply chain businesses with premises costs, where the majority of business activity is supplying to the hospitality, accommodation, leisure or entertainment sectors. These businesses will be experiencing a significant loss of trade due to local and national restrictions. Cutting through the confusion • Your business can still apply if you received an original national lockdown grant • Your business can still apply even if the main part of your business was forced but have been able to operate a takeaway service (for example a café) or click and collect (for example a non-essential retailer) during lockdown. • If your business has applied for a grant since October and you have been successful you do not need to reapply. Payments will be topped up with out the need for further applications where a business meets the grant criteria going forward. • You are still a rate payer even if you receive a bill from Sheffield City Council Business Rates team for £0. • Your business can still apply even if you have received any form of Business Rates Relief.
For support and advice on accessing these grants, please contact Business Sheffield on telephone 0114 224 5000 or email businesssheffield@sheffield.gov.uk

BLADES FAIL TO FIND FIRST WIN ON THE SOUTH COAST
United are still looking for a first Premier League win of the season, following Sunday’s loss at St Mary’s. Former Blade Che Adams netted in the first half, before Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond scored after the break, as the Blades slipped to defeat in Hampshire. For the clash on the south-coast, Wilder made four changes. Stevens and Ampadu returned from injury, whilst Jagielka was handed a first Premier League start of the campaign and skipper Sharp started alongside McBurnie in attack. The home side had the majority of the ball in the opening five minutes, but Berge was alert to the danger and cleared after Armstrong failed to connect cleanly from a corner routine. Vestergaard’s long ball forward then found the run of Walcott, but Baldock did well to halt his progress before the assistant referee flagged for offside. On 16 minutes, the Saints fashioned the first real chance of the game. Adams shook off the attentions of Basham and slipped in Ings, Ramsdale stood tall though to make a good save, before Jagielka made a timely intervention to deny the same forward moments later at the expense of a corner. Vestergaard rose highest, but thankfully headed wide. McBurnie required treatment following a heavy fall after a tackle by Walker-Peters, before the hosts won a
trio of consecutive corners, but United stood firm and continued to keep a good shape as the home side had a lot of possession inside their own half as the half hour mark ticked by. United’s first sight of goal saw Stevens get to the byline, but Berge couldn’t direct a sliding effort on target. But on 34 minutes, the Blades fell behind. A free-kick from Ward-Prowse was partially cleared by Jagielka, but Bednarek beat Ampadu in an aerial challenge and ADAMS managed to squeeze the ball into the goal at the near post despite the attentions of Egan and Ramsdale. The remainder of the first period, saw Southampton have most of the play, but United finished strongly with Berge just failing to pick out the run of McBurnie. Having picked up a shoulder injury in the first half, McBurnie was replaced early on in the second by McGoldrick, as United forced a couple of corners in quick succession. Basham playing in an advanced role on the right got the better of Bertrand and won another corner, Fleck delivered, and Egan rose above his marker, only to see his header go narrowly over. On the hour, Brewster was introduced with Sharp making way, but two minutes later the hosts doubled their advantage with a fortunate goal. ARMSTRONG broke from midfield, combined with Ings, but his effort took a cruel deflection off the retreating Jagielka which totally wrongfooted Ramsdale. United’s final change saw Mousset enter the fray, replacing Basham, but it was Ramsdale who was called into action to deny Ings again after Adams looked to capitalise on Jagielka’s misplaced header. Ings then got in behind the Blads defence, but Stevens made a crucial interception as he looked to square to Walcott. With seven minutes remaining, United’s afternoon got even worse as REDMOND combined with Romeu before slotting into the bottom corner past Ramsdale. As the clocked ticked down, the Blades couldn’t muster a response as four minutes of added time came to nothing.
Pulis confirms Iorfa blow
The Owls have suffered an injury blow, with Dominic Iorfa expected to be sidelined for six months. Iorfa sustained what is expected to be a ruptured Achilles in Saturday’s derby defeat to Barnsley. Speaking to the media after the game, Tony Pulis said: “It looks like a rupture and Dom will be out for six months if that is the case. “I’m absolutely devastated for the lad because he’s been like a Rolls Royce in training. “He will have an operation on Monday and I doubt we will see him for the rest of the season.” On a day of frustration, Pulis said his team were good for a point against the Tykes. An improved second half performance saw Wednesday dominate but the breakthrough failed to arrive: “I thought we were deserved a point from the game, particularly the way we played in the second half. We dominated the ball and we were really unfortunate when Joey hits the crossbar and the post, but that’s the way things are going for us right now. “We have to roll up our sleeves, we go to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday and that’s as big a game as it gets right now.”
Owls FA Cup date confirmed
Major milestone for Dunkley Chey Dunkley’s inclusion in the starting XI on Saturday was a major milestone for the defender on his return from a long spell on the sidelines. A double leg break back in February while playing for former club Wigan has seen the influential stopper out of action now for 10 months. But his influence at the club goes way beyond being in the matchday squad, with his experience and character behind the scenes proving as valuable off the pitch. While it was obviously a huge step to play on Saturday, Dunkley says he couldn’t overthink that side of it too much, with full focus only on the game, and he explained: “I’ve been 10 months out and this is my first competitive game, I’ve just got to get with it, there is no time to have excuses or things like that, once my name is on the team sheet – right it’s focus. “I’ve been here before, we’ve got to roll our sleeves up and all I can do is try and influence other people around me, keep working hard and this is a building block for myself moving forward. “It was important for me to get as many minutes as I can, I was willing to play on but the gaffer has probably looked and thought it’s my first game but for me when I’m on the pitch I will give it my all. “That’s what I’m about, I can’t just walk around on the pitch, it’s in my DNA – I have to work hard and that’s what I tried to do.” And now back in contention to play, Dunkley’s focus is on helping the Owls turn around their form. “It has been tough but we have to fight,” he said. “The good thing about the Championship is we have another game on Tuesday and every game is a cup final now. “I’ve been with the lads from the start of the season and we definitely have people here who want to fight, the effort has been there. “I have been trying to galvanise when I haven’t been a part of the team, and now I’m on the field. It’s easy to be the best player when you’re in the stand – you can play the perfect game. “But out there was tough, I was out there and it was tough but the lads are working hard.”
The Owls’ Emirates FA Cup third round tie against Exeter will take place on Saturday 9 January, with a 3.00pm kick-off. Wednesday’s trip to St James Park will be shown on BT Sport Extra 5. Eight fixtures will be live across BBC platforms, 16 fixtures across BT Sport platforms and the remaining eight fixtures broadcast free to fans on The FA Player, exclusively delivered to homes by Deliveroo.

SUFC Moore: a 2020/21 deserved win
HRH SPEAKS OF FUTURE PLANS
HRH Prince Abdullah was at Sunday’s fixture at Southampton and took time out to speak to BBC Radio Sheffield. United’s owner spoke openly about a number of subjects including United’s current position in the Premier League, the faith he has in Chris Wilder and the Blades plans ahead of next month transfer window. Prince Abdullah began: “It’s been a tough season so far, but I’m optimistic we can turn things around. “An owner doesn’t have to make a lot of decisions, but when you do, you have to make the right ones. I could say Chris (Wilder) has earnt the right to stay because of winning two promotions and a very good first year in the Premier League, but that isn’t the way I look at it. I think Chris is the best coach and manager to take us out of this current situation and I believe in him. If he wasn’t manager of a team right now, I would hire him and if the worse comes to the worse he’d be the manager to take us back to the Premier League.” He continued: “It is a long season and I still have a lot of hope, but I will stick with Chris no matter what. I talk to Chris regularly, I met with him on Friday. We discussed a lot of things, including the January transfer window, it was a very good talk. We will support Chris in January. We have a good team, we believe in Chris and the players and I’m optimistic. “If you look at a lot of clubs’ net spending in recent transfer windows, not many have spent more than us and we’re happy with the business we’ve done, the average age is young and they will be the core of the squad for a long time, hopefully. “There is still a long way to go. Let’s see how the season goes, we see ourselves as a Premier League team and hopefully we will remain one in the longterm.”

SWFC RIP John McSeveney, 1931-2020 Sheffield United is saddened to learn of the passing of former assistant manager John McSeveney. He was 89. John had a fine career as a player, appearing for Hamilton, Sunderland, Cardiff City, Newport County and Hull City before moving into management with Barnsley in 1971. He joined the Blades as assistant to Ian Porterfield from Rotherham United in June 1981, having worked with him at Millmoor, and became a key part of the backroom staff that lifted the Fourth Division Championship trophy in 1982, as well as promotion back to Division Two in 1984. He is pictured in the centre of this team photograph from the early 1980s. Well regarded by players and staff alike, John departed just a few days after Porterfield in 1986. The condolences of all at the Blades are with John's family at this sad time.

Darren Moore felt Rovers’ win over Gillingham was well deserved as Reece James and Brad Halliday were both on target. The Rovers boss was happy to make it back-to-back wins against an in-form Gillingham side and was impressed with his how his team responded to Kyle Dempsey’s equaliser. He said: “It was a good, accomplished performance from ourselves against some tough opposition. I thought for the most of it we were in control. I felt we could’ve maybe got more goals with some of the chances we had today, but overall it was a good performance. “The response to from the players after the equaliser was excellent. With the changes they made I knew they threw caution to the wind, but on the flip side I knew if we could break their lines that we’d get chances. “They’ll learn a lot from the Gillingham game through the mindset they had to use and the type of game that it was. Gillingham are always difficult to play and if you’re going to beat them you have to earn it.” Halliday got his first goal in Rovers colours, while Reece James got his third of the season, showing that Rovers have goals in all positions on the pitch. He added: “Reece and Brad have scored today with two good finishes in advanced areas of the pitch for them. “Reece’s goal was a lovely tidy finish and obviously Brad did what we asked of him to put pressure on the box. “To score in 13 consecutive league games is really good. As I said the team is ever improving and we have just got to keep working and improving. If we keep our focus and move on to the next game because they’re coming thick and fast.”
We outfought them, outbattled them and outplayed them – Hamshaw
Rotherham United First Team/ Development Coach Matt Hamshaw was left delighted with the team’s performance, following a richly deserved victory over Bristol City at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Robins came to South Yorkshire in the play-off positions in the Sky Bet Championship, but were put to the sword courtesy of first half strikes from Matt Crooks and Michael Smith. Despite the Millers’ obvious delight at collecting three points, the scoreline did not flatter Paul Warne’s men who could have quite easily recorded an even greater margin of victory on another day. “I think we showed today against a very good Bristol City team that, if I’m going to be honest, we outfought them, outbattled them and at times we outplayed them and I think that is full credit to our players,” Hamshaw explained. “Our recent home performances have been excellent, we we’ve been a little disappointed with some first half displays recently, however what we have got in that changing room is character and fighting spirit. That is something we’ve been built on in the last four years and I think that came to the forefront today. We needed to show what it means to wear this shirt and we definitely got that today.” There were a number of strong performances among the Millers ranks during this victory, and while Hamshaw admitted he’d been impressed with Michael Smith’s display, he stressed that the performance from the team as a whole was excellent. “He (Michael Smith) was very good, but was one of a number who played really well today. I thought Vass (Kyle Vassell) did well, Freddie (Ladapo) came on and did well and so did George (Hirst). I think we looked like we weren’t going to concede today and I think that is a massive plus. “Viktor (Johansson) has come in and did really well, the back three stayed disciplined and did everything we asked. Matt Olosunde was very good and I thought Ben Wiles playing out of position at left-wing back was excellent. “On another day we could have had a few more goals. Viktor made one save in the second half from Nahki Wells, but aside from that I don’t think they created many opportunities. They’ve got good players up top who can cause teams problems, hence why they are where they are in the table and it speaks volumes of the players we have.”
