Sheffield schools to enjoy FREE panto in new year Sheffield Theatres has announced its streamed version of Damian’s Pop-Up Panto will be made available for free to all schools in the region from Mon 4 – Fri 8 January 2021. Following news last week that no live audiences would be able to attend the performances of the panto, Sheffield Theatres have partnered with Learn Sheffield to ensure that all schools in the region get access to the streamed version of Damian’s Pop-Up Panto for free. Stephen Betts, Chief
Executive of Learn Sheffield: “This is a lovely gesture from Sheffield Theatres which reflects the close relationship between the theatre and schools across the region. I am sure that children and staff will enjoy this New Year treat!” Dan Bates, Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres, added: “Every year we welcome thousands of school children from across the city to our panto, sadly due to current restrictions we are unable to welcome schools into our buildings this Christmas
time, which is why I’m personally so excited that we’re sharing Damian’s Pop-Up Panto! with schools for free. “Watching rehearsals I was smiling from ear to ear and laughing throughout and after what has been such a difficult year for us all, it is fantastic that we are able to bring some cheer to school children across our region.” Damian’s Pop-Up Panto stars Sheffield legend Damian Williams as the Dame who’s tasked with saving Christmas. Written and directed by
Sheffield Theatres regular pantomime producer, Paul Hendy, joining Damian are comedian, presenter and internet sensation Joe Tracini, and West End stars Gemma Sutton, Lucas Rush and Deborah Tracey, in a fun-sized festive treat for everyone!
The panto will be available for everyone to watch on demand from today (21 December) to 3 January. Household passes will be priced from only £15 and further information will be available at www. sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.

LA PLATA SOCIAL CLUB PIONEERS NEW SYSTEM THAT KEEPS MEMBERS SAFE AS WELL AS SAVING ON THEIR BILLS La Plata Social Club in Sheffield are the very first Club to have three Pure Air Systems installed in their Main Bar Area and Club Lounge in South York. The C.I.U Club that has been established for many years now and ran by Brian Helliwell the Club Secretary and his Committee. In response to the Covid 19 this year Amy at Smart Energy Projects contacted Brian to advise on the potential risks to his staff and members when heating certain areas with a mix of both AirConditioning and Gas Fired Heating. The World Health Organisation announced
on July 9th that the Corona Virus can now be transmitted through the air and the virus particulates will remain infectious for up to 6 hours in a room area if somebody is positive for the virus. Brian was concerned for his Committee and Members as relies on air-conditioning to heat his bar area and understood that these units will only ever continue to re-circulate the air within the room posing a greater risk to his members when socialising. Brian new that the Club needed a quick solution to this problem to help provide protection and assurance to both staff and
members who mainly are over 70 years of age and vulnerable due to having other respiratory health conditions. The Club needed systems to kill the virus in the air and on all surface areas as Brian stated that it was incredibly difficult to maintain social distancing whilst constantly cleaning surface areas 24/7 which isn’t practically possible at all times and his Committee were worried that their air-conditioning units when being used to heat would cause an even bigger problem as they couldn’t continue to leave all their windows open in the Winter.
Benefits of PureAir Technology • Eliminates up to 99%+ of all known viruses, Bacteria and germs • Cleans both the air and surface • Instantly attacks new infections brought in • Purifies all air in the space at the same time • No filters required • Works excellently alongside all air-conditioning and prevents re-circulation of the virus • Eliminates unpleasant odours • Costs only £25 per year per system to run 24/7 • Can purchase or rent for as little as £12 per week per system
The Solution
Three Pure Air Systems were installed into the Bar and Lounge Area of the Club which were installed in just a morning and will now provide the Club with Pure Air and Sanitisation of all surface areas 24/7. Costing a total of just £76 per year to run all three systems and to provide pure clean air to the Club Rooms eliminating all known viruses by up to 99%+ these were a no brainer and a life line to the Club who wished to continue to provide safe Covid Safe Areas for Members to socialise amongst each other whilst having a drink or playing the odd occasional Bingo. The Club now do not need to keep windows open when it’s freezing outside and can use their AirConditioning safely without any potential risks of re-circulating the virus to other members. The systems will also provide a saving to the Club of £800 each year and reduce all heating costs by 20%. With this year being tougher than ever for the Hospitality Sectors saving additional money on heating and cooling bills have been welcomed by Club Committees as well as providing rooms which are safe.
Best wishes from the committee and staff at La Plata Social Club for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our Members & Guests! We look forward to welcoming you back once the restrictions end!!

christmas covid testing update
Over Christmas and the new year period, Covid testing is as important as ever and local testing centres will continue to provide a full service. Testing centre opening hours will vary between 24th December and 4th January across the city’s 6 testing sites. All Covid tests must be booked in advance and when people call to request a test they will be given a date and time at a testing centre close to them. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health for Sheffield said: “We’re all looking forward to a Christmas break, but we must remember that Covid isn’t taking a break, it will take its chances whenever and wherever it can. If anyone has Covid symptoms they should book a test straightaway and once they have had their test they must self-isolate until they have received their results so that they can protect those around them as much as possible. This means please don’t mix with anyone else other than people within your household and don’t go to work unless you work from home until you receive your test result. If you receive a positive Covid test result you will need to self-isolate for 10 days. As ever, I’m reminding everyone of the most important things they can do to help reduce the spread of the virus and protect themselves and others. Remember to keep two metres away from those not in your bubble, wear a mask in crowded places and public settings, wash your hands regularly, use separate towels and don’t touch your face with hands that are not clean. This will help to save lives. That’s how important it is.” These are the testing site locations: • Sharrow (Pedestrian) Alderson Road Car Park, Sharrow, S2 4LG (down the road from London Road Pharmacy) • Darnall (Pedestrian) Station Road Car Park, Darnall, S9 4JT • Burngreave (Pedestrian) Gower Street Car Park, Burngreave, S4 7HA • Upperthorpe (Pedestrian) Shipton Street Car Park, Upperthorpe, Sheffield, S6 3EB • Hillsborough (Mobile test centre, Pedestrian & Drive-Through)

Meanwhile the Council have issued a statement following the news that a new variant of the Covid virus has been identified. Eleanor Rutter, Public Health Consultant at Sheffield City Council, said: “During the second national lockdown, while rates of Covid infection slowed down in most areas of the country, rates in the south east increased. With this increase in cases, a new strain of the virus was identified. It is normal for viruses to undergo mutations and it was always a possibility that this could happen. Unfortunately, this new strain is much more infectious than the dominant strain which has been circulating over the last nine months. Estimates suggest it is up to 75% more transmissible and this is being looked at meticulously amongst professionals. Importantly, there is nothing to suggest that current testing methods or the effectiveness of vaccination will be affected. In common with other parts of the country, it is highly likely that we have cases of the new variant of Covid. We are asking anyone, even with the mildest of symptoms to self-isolate and get a test. The good news is that the new variant can be controlled by the same measures that we are all familiar with. However, following the announcement from Government on Saturday, we want to urge anyone who has travelled from the south east, over the last several days, to Sheffield to stay at home to prevent the spread of the virus. We also want to remind people to be cautious; it is imperative that we all now stick firmly to the guidance by maintaining a distance of at least two metres from people you do not live with and washing your hands frequently for 20 seconds as well as wearing a face covering. We know how hard people have and continue to work to limit the spread of this disease in Sheffield and how much people wanted some sense of ‘normality’ over the Christmas period, but it is more important now than ever to do whatever we can to keep our friends and families safe over the coming weeks.”
couple raise £2500 for sheffield’s home from home charity
A Yorkshire couple whose baby boy will be spending Christmas in hospital are thanking The Sick Children’s Trust for keeping their family together this Christmas. Adele and Martin Jefferson, from Harrogate, have been in Sheffield for the last seven weeks as their son, Joshua, has been undergoing major surgeries at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Joshua and his twin brother Edward were born on 10 October 2020 at 34 weeks. They remained in the family’s local hospital for 18 nights before being allowed home to meet their big brother, William. From that moment, their parents looked forward to showing the boys off to friends and family. However just four days later, Joshua stopped feeding. He was rushed to Harrogate Hospital where his condition deteriorated and his parents were prepared for the worst. 12 hours later he was in Sheffield Children’s Hospital fighting for his life, and has been there ever since. In the last seven weeks, Joshua has undergone two major operations on his bowel due to a life-threatening condition called necrotising enterocolitis. As a result he has had to have 30cm of his bowel removed. During this time, Adele and Martin, alongside Joshua’s twin Edward, have been supported by The Sick Children’s Trust at its Magnolia House, near the ICU, which gives families a warm and comfortable place to stay. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the ‘Home from Home’ has remained open to keep families together. Adele said: “Magnolia House changed our whole world by allowing us to be by Joshua’s bedside. A baby needs their family, and we could be right there from the beginning with him. I don’t know how over these last few weeks we would’ve been able to be with Joshua and also be there for Edward without it. We have been so focused on Joshua that we haven’t had chance to really step back and think about it but when we do we can see just how much support it has given us. Joshua is doing OK but it will be a slow road to recovery, though things are looking upwards sometimes it feels like one step forward and one backwards. But he is making little steps and every step is important.” Although Joshua will be spending his first Christmas in hospital, he won’t be alone as his parents will be able to be right by his side. Adele

and Martin are supporting the charity’s Together this Christmas appeal which asks supporters to donate £30 to give a family a place to stay close to their child’s hospital bedside and have set up a Facebook Fundraiser which in 12 hours raised over £2,500. Martin added: “It’s massively comforting to know we have Magnolia House. It’s made the impossible possible, without it we would’ve been struggling and worrying about where we would sleep. That means the absolute world to us and we can’t thank the charity enough for making this happen. Right from the beginning, Magnolia House was there and it was that bit of support that we didn’t realise we needed. Without it, we would’ve fallen over. Life is so stressful at the moment and the logistics of being there with him would’ve been a nightmare.” The Sick Children’s Trust wants to keep families together by their child’s hospital bedside, and a donation of £30 can do that. Jane Featherstone, Chief Executive at The Sick Children’s Trust, said: “As Christmas approaches, Martin and Adele are hoping to be able to see and spend time with all three of their children. Because of Magnolia House they will be able to wake up on Christmas Day and see Joshua first thing, then travel to Harrogate to see William open his presents from Father Christmas and spend time with Edward before going back to Sheffield to tuck Joshua in. Our ‘Homes from Home’ give families will be there for families like Adele’s and Martins this Christmas, keeping them together and giving them one less thing to worry about. This year, we need your support more than ever to keep families together with their child in hospital. With a donation of £30 from you to our Together this Christmas appeal, we can ease their worries and give them a place to stay and ensure that they can be together this Christmas.” To donate to The Sick Children’s Trust’s Xmas appeal, visit: www.sickchildrenstrust.org/donate To donate directly to Adele and Martin’s fundraiser visit: www.facebook.com/ donate/192955129215431/

the 24 in direst need of urgent assistance. Mark Dayvd, CEO of Music Venue Trust, said “As we approach the end of this horrendous year for grassroots music venues we felt the need to make a direct intervention in order to provide some relief for 24 venues who were unable to access the funding they need to survive. We have received incredible support from audiences, artists, individual donors, companies who have made financial contributions and from the wider music sector. As a result, we are able to make a distribution of £230k of emergency funding to stave off the immediate threat of closure and provide a firm footing for survival. We want to thank everyone who has helped, supported and contributed to our #saveourvenues campaign this year, including the UK government, particularly the Department of Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), Arts Council England, Mayor of London, and local authorities around the country; it has been truly overwhelming and humbling to see how much grassroots music venues matter to so many people. We particularly want to thank our friends in the media for continuing to shine a spotlight on the plight of grassroots music venues.” Beverley Whitrick, Strategic Director of Music Venue Trust, added, “In 2020, at the height of this crisis, Music Venue Trust made a commitment to try to Reopen Every Venue Safely. With continued support from everyone, we are determined to make that ambition a reality in 2021.”
ONLY ONLY
Music Venue Trust (MVT), which represents hundreds of grassroots music venues throughout the UK, has announced that is has taken positive steps to help save 24 venues in crisis including a £10k donation towards the Crowdfunder for Sheffield’s Dryad Works. The Neepsend venue is hoping to raise just under £40k to help it through the Coronavirus crisis, they didn’t qualify for Furlough, Bounce Back Loans or a Cultural Recovery Fund bid so their crowdfunder is one of the last routes they have. Dryad’s popularity within the city and beyond has helped them achieve nearly three quarters of their target - you can read more about their campaign and donate at https://www.crowdfunder. co.uk/savedryad Since the pandemic forced grassroot music venues to close their doors earlier this year MVT, via its #saveourvenues campaign, has helped unlock over £80m of funding from donations and government initiatives, which has seen over 400 venues secure their immediate futures until March 31st 2021. MVT itself has already distributed over £650,000 from the national fund, raised from audience and individual donations, corporate pledges and contributions from the wider music industry. A small number of venues were, however, unable to access sufficient funding and were added to a ‘red list’ of venues in imminent danger of permanent closure. BLADES PICK UP VALUABLE POINT AT THE AMEX
United deservedly left the AMEX Stadium with a share of the spoils, but the ten-men came so close to registering a first win of the campaign on the south-coast. At the end of even first period, John Lundstram was dismissed for a challenge Joel Veltman, but substitute Jayden Bogle gave the Blades the lead just after the hour. United battled and fought to hold on to that advantage, only for Danny Welbeck to score with three minutes left to cruelly deny Chris Wilder’s side. The boss made two changes for the clash in Sussex. Brewster was handed a start in attack, with Burke named amongst the substitutes, whilst Lundstram was recalled in midfield in place of the injured Berge. Brighton won the first corner of the game early on, but having previously denied Maupay, Egan then dealt with Dunk at the back post and cleared his lines. The opening exchanges remained even, but it was the hosts through Dunk who had the first sight goal, with the defender heading over from another right-wing corner. March was seeing plenty of the ball for the home side but two free kicks following fouls from Baldock came to nothing. On 26 minutes, United survived a major scare. Bissouma sent Trossard into open space down the right, he got the better of Robinson and found Maupay, but thankfully Basham got a boot to his effort and Ramsdale claimed the loose ball. On the half hour, from a corner, Ampadu had to make a crucial block as Maupay looked to turn Webster’s header into the net. Burke replaced Fleck, who appeared to have picked up a knock and the striker almost had an immediate impact as he latched on to a loose ball, forcing Dunk to commit a foul that saw the Brighton skipper booked. From the resulting free kick, McGoldrick’s low effort look destined for the bottom corner until Sanchez intervened and tipped it wide of the far post.

The introduction of Burke had prompted a positive change of formation, but following a good spell offensively, the Blades suffered a huge blow as Lundstram’s challenge on Veltman was upgraded from a yellow card to a red after VAR advised referee Bankes to look at the pitchside monitor. Following Lundstram’s departure, United switched to a back four, Basham moved into midfield and Burke and McGoldrick were now supporting Brewster from wide positions. Understandably, United began the second period on the back foot. Substitute Jahahbakhsh broke and ran out the Blades defence, but Trossard dragged his effort wide of the far post. Bogle made his debut off the bench replacing Brewster, as Egan had to be alert to deny the advancing March. In response, Burke used his pace to get in behind Dunk and Webster, support arrived, but Stevens fired an effort wide. And on 63 minutes, it was the Blades that grabbed the lead on the break. Stevens combined with Burke on the left, McGoldrick got in behind the Brighton defence and pulled the ball back to BOGLE who fired past Sanchez with the aid of a deflection off Webster. The home side looked for an instant response, but Ramsdale tipped over a stinging drive from Webster. United’s final change saw Osborn replace McGoldrick with 20 minutes remaining. The visitors were having the majority of the ball and territory, but despite the concession a few corners United continued to stand firm, with Ramsdale making a routine save from Webster’s header. There were eight minutes remaining when Jahahbakhsh found space to cross from the byline, Ramsdale couldn’t claim at full stretch, but thankfully Connolly headed over with the goal at his mercy The clocking was ticking down slowly, but United had a good chance to double the advantage, Burke won the initial header and then raced into the box where he was found by Osborn, but his effort flew off the bar. And on 87 minutes, after Osborn was booked for a foul, Brighton equalised from a free kick that landed into the path of WELBECK who lashed into the roof of the net from close-range. United were now hanging on for a point, Burke and then Ramsdale were harshly booked as four minutes added time were signalled by the fourth official. The Blades won two free kicks in promising wide positions, but right at the death it was the home side that come close to snatching the spoils as Jahahbakhsh headed against the bar before Baldock hammered clear to secure a deserved point for United.

OBITUARY FOR Now let’s FORMER OWLS use that confidence CHAIRMAN GEOFF HULLEY Confidence is king in football and Tony Pulis is hoping his side can build positively on the 1-0 win over Coventry. The Owls turned in an improved performance against the Sky Blues and emerged worthy winners courtesy of Tom Lees’ second half winner. And Pulis said: “Confidence is everything in football and all sports really, it’s so important. Now hopefully we can use this as a springboard for the coming weeks and months. “They’ve done ever so well today, they’ve given everything and that’s the win they deserved. We’ve dominated teams more than that today and lost but that’s the way it goes sometimes. “We’ve created some really good chances and we win that game by a higher margin. But I will take the win and now we need to build on that. “We’ve got a big game on Boxing Day against a very good Blackburn side and it would be nice to go on a run. “We’ll have a full week with the players on the training ground for the first time since I’ve been here when we can do some proper work instead of just recovery.”
Everyone at Sheffield Wednesday was saddened to learn of the recent passing of former director and chairman, Geoff Hulley. Mr Hulley passed peacefully following a long illness. Born in 1930, he was a boyhood Sheffield Wednesday fan, regularly cycling down to Hillsborough from his Ecclesfield home. He joined the Board in September 1980, his initial brief overseeing the catering arm of the club. His responsibilities would promptly rise to the football operation across senior and youth team levels at Hillsborough. Mr Hulley was a keen advocate of developing players through the youth system - Mel Sterland his favourite example - and he was party to the pivotal appointment of Howard Wilkinson in 1983 that triggered our return to the top tier following a 14-year absence. His highlights also included the 1991 League Cup triumph against Manchester United and the four trips to Wembley two years later, despite the two cup final defeats to Arsenal. Mr Hulley, who was a co-founder and president of the Wise Old Owls, retired from the Board in December 2010 to become a Life President. Our thoughts are with Mr Hulley’s family and friends at this difficult time.

United’s Under 18s ended their year in style with a dominant 3-0 win at home to Sheffield Wednesday, with all three goals coming in the opening 25 minutes. The Owls couldn’t cope with United’s quick play, aggression to win the ball back and pace out wide and on another day it could have been more, especially after Ryan Viggars saw a penalty saved. It took just 90 seconds for the young Blades to set the tone for the day when Antwoine Hackford pounced on a loose ball after some good work from Williams and smashed a low effort into the far corner. Captain Ollie Arblaster saw a free-kick blocked by the wall and Beau Anderson saw a header cleared off the line, but United hit home their dominance when Williams found himself in the right place to slot home Josh Smith’s pull back into the box. The Blades were flying and just five minutes later it was three. Louie Marsh stepped up for a free-kick out on the left and his looping effort went all the way and dropped in at the back post. Sheffield Wednesday enjoyed a brief spell of possession towards the end of the half but only really tested Josh Chapman once, the goalkeeper doing well to tip a looping header over the bar. The Blades maintained momentum after the break and had the chance to make it four when Viggars was tripped inside the box, but his effort from the spot was well pushed behind by the goalkeeper. Moments later, Hackford saw an effort well cleared off the line and the Owls saw an indirect free-kick inside the Blades box brilliantly blocked before moments later Luke Hall was sent off for pulling back Smith on a United breakaway. 15-year-old Jack Waldron, making his first under 18s start, was superb at right-back, and he was joined on the pitch late on by fellow 15-year-old Kurtis Havenhand. Chapman made another good save late on to preserve his clean sheet but United were never overly threatened in a game they controlled from start to finish. Blades: Chapman, Waldron, Angell, Arblaster, Cullinan, Anderson, Th. Williams (Bailey-Green 84), Smith, Hackford (Havenhand 88), Marsh (Brooks 79), Viggars. Unused: Hampshaw, Grant.
BLADESWOMEN FINISH 2020 WITH FRUSTRATION Sheffield United Women were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw to end 2020 at home against London City Lionesses. Neil Redfearn’s Blades had the better of the first half but had goalkeeper Fran Kitching to thank for a big save towards the end of the match as the Lionesses gained momentum after the break. The hosts got off to a good start with Rhema LordMears particularly lively, while Maddy Cusack was all energy in the midfield, winning the ball back to start several promising attacks. Lord-Mears saw two efforts from range deflected behind, but it was the final ball in wide areas which cost the Blades as several crosses from promising positions only found Lionesses goalkeeper Shea Yanez. Katie Wilkinson saw a free-kick from the edge of the box blocked just before the break, but the Blades struggled to build on their first half performance after the break. Neither side really managed to create any meaningful chances against two resolute defences, but the visitors wasted two big chances inside the final 20 minutes. First, Atlanta Primus rolled an effort just wide after being played in on goal, before Kitching stood tall to push away a powerful effort from Lily Agg who found herself with space inside the Blades box. Substitute Lucy Watson almost found a breakthrough in stoppage time when she burst into the box, but her low ball across goal was cleared away as the points were shared. Blades: Kitching, Little, Hartley, Lipka, Pennock (Walton 89), Cusack, Wilkinson, Dixon, Lord-Mears (Matthews 56), Sarri, Sweetman-Kirk (Watson 86).

Darren Moore felt his side showed good professionalism to earn a 3-1 victory at Burton Albion in Sky Bet League One. Goals from Fejiri Okenabirhie, Ben Whiteman and Taylor Richards sealed the three points for Rovers at the Pirelli Stadium. Moore said: “It was a professional performance which allowed us to continue the good form we’ve been on recently. “We responded really well to them getting back in the game, it meant that we could control things in the second-half. “You always want to score first and we did that, I was pleased because it was a good team move and a smart finish by Fejiri.” While there were areas the manager felt could be improved from the performance, he was pleased to see his players find a way to make it four straight league wins. He added: “There were parts I enjoyed and others I felt we could have been better at, we missed some opportunities to increase our lead. “Overall I have to be pleased with the three points, and to get three goals away from home is really good. “It’s important to be able to find different ways of winning games, the players seem to have that in their locker.”
FEJIRI pleased to make an impact
Fejiri Okenabirhie was pleased to play his part in the win over Burton Albion after opening the scoring at the Pirelli Stadium. The No.9 set Rovers on their way to a fourth straight win in Sky Bet League One by firing home with eight minutes gone. He said: “The first goal was what we’re about, we played through the lines and I was there to finish Cam’s cross into the box. “We moved the ball quickly which we work on in training, I knew that if I got in the right position then I had a chance of scoring. “As a striker my job is to be in the middle and get on the end of things, it was a great ball in and it’s a great feeling to score.” After making his first league start since the start of December, Okenabirhie says he was keen to put in a good display. He added: “I’m always looking to make an impact and help the team get results, we all need to be ready when we’re called upon. “I try to give my all and be an outlet, the more I can do that the more success we can have as a forward line.”
