ENGLAND RETURNS TO LOCKDOWN On Monday (4th) January the Prime Minister announced that the whole of England was being placed in to Lockdown regardless of which tier region’s previously held. The new restrictions resemble those of the first lockdown of March 2020 with people being urged to stay at home apart from to shop for basic neccessities, excercise (with limitations), to go to work if you cannot do so from home or to escape harm. Primary and secondary
schools have also closed with leisure and sporting facilities plus personal care facilities all shutting down again. Bars, pubs and restaurants remain closed aside from sales by takeaway (no alcohol). Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region responded: “We’ve seen an alarming increase in cases in recent weeks, initially concentrated in London and the South East, but now rates of infection and hospitalisation are
rising extremely quickly in almost every region of the UK. The new variant of the virus is 50% to 70% more infectious and transmissible and we must do all we can to limit its spread. “It’s devastating for families and businesses to start the New Year with tighter restrictions, but this is the only way we will save lives and prevent our NHS and hospitals from being overwhelmed in the toughest winter we have faced. “The Prime Minister took
too long to take this decision and now needs to urgently set out how the government plans to contain the new variant of the virus until a vaccine can be fully rolled out. “This plan must come alongside a comprehensive package of financial support for workers and businesses, assistance for schools and students to ensure no young person is further disadvantaged and a long-term recovery plan to level up the economy. Earlier today, I called for Christmas compensation
for businesses in South Yorkshire: the support on offer was inadequate under Tier 3 and must now be urgently reviewed by the Treasury under this new lockdown. “I understand just how weary and frustrated many people will be, but the lockdown in March reduced the spread of the virus, and if we all follow the rules, this one will as well. For the sake of our families, our communities, and our businesses, everyone needs to play their part.” More information regarding the new restrictions can be found on Page 8 >>>

Daddy, do all fairy tales start with Once upon a time? No dear, there’s a whole series of fairly tales that start with “If elected, I promise”. I told my boss that three companies were after me and I need a raise.... My boss asked “what companies? “ Gas, water and electricity. I really thought my wife was joking when she said she wanted to see a Monkees tribute band play in Switzerland. And then I saw her face, now I’m in Geneva... How do you clean a pig? Ham sanitizer.

USEFUL NUMBERS
News, Information and Advice covid testing locations updated
There are six Covid testing centres across Sheffield and on 11th January one of them will move location. The Hillsborough mobile testing centre will move to the site of the former Hazlebarrow Primary School. There will still be six testing centres in total, open 7 days per week, and the full list of locations and postcodes is below. Covid testing is as important as ever and local testing centres will continue providing a full testing service into the new year. All Covid tests must be booked in advance and when people call to request a test they will be given a date and time at a testing centre close to them. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health for Sheffield said: “If anyone has Covid symptoms they should book a test straightaway and once they have had their test they must self-isolate until they have received their results so that they can protect those around them as much as possible. This means please don’t mix with anyone else other than people within your household and don’t go to work unless you work from home until you receive your test result. If you receive a positive Covid test result you will need to self-isolate for 10 days. As ever, I’m reminding everyone of the most important things they can do to help reduce the spread of the virus and protect themselves and others. Remember to keep two metres away from those not in your bubble, wear a mask in crowded places and public settings, wash your hands regularly, use separate towels and don’t touch your face with hands that are not clean. This will help to save lives. That’s how important it is.” Testing site locations These are the testing site locations: Sharrow (Pedestrian) • Alderson Road Car Park, Sharrow, S2 4LG (down the road from London Road Pharmacy) Darnall (Pedestrian) • Station Road Car Park, Darnall, S9 4JT Burngreave (Pedestrian) • Gower Street Car Park, Burngreave, S4 7HA Upperthorpe (Pedestrian) • Shipton Street Car Park, Upperthorpe, Sheffield, S6 3EB Former Hazlebarrow Primary School site • (Mobile test centre, Pedestrian & DriveThrough) Hazlebarrow Crescent, S8 8AN Meadowhall Shopping Centre • (Drive-Through) Overspill car park, plot 7

blood donors urgently needed in lockdown
Blood, plasma and platelet donors in all Tiers are urged by the NHS to keep attending as normal if they are fit and healthy. Giving blood and plasma is classed as essential travel and donation sessions will stay open, with appointments remaining as normal. This important reminder follows a fresh appeal from NHS Blood and Transplant for blood and platelet donors to make an appointment in the New Year if they don’t already have one. Donors are also asked to keep to their appointment if they can, to help build blood stocks ahead of a potentially challenging winter period. The only two days of the year that blood donations are not collected is Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. An extra 1,500 units of blood is currently needed every week and extra appointments have been added across the country to help meet this need. Permanent donor centres in major towns and cities generally have the best appointment availability. Extra safety measures are in place. Donors are triaged with a temperature check on arrival. Hand gels and hand washing facilities are available, donors are spaced apart and staff are doing extra cleaning. Staff and donors wear face coverings. Donors are reminded to follow all relevant Government transport guidance when making a journey to give blood. Each donation can save or improve up to three lives. Book appointments and check the latest guidance on Covid-19 and giving blood by calling 0300 123 23 23, downloading the NHS Give Blood app, or visiting the website www. blood.co.uk. NHS Blood and Transplant is a joint England and Wales Special Health Authority. We provide the blood donation service for England and the organ donation service for the UK. We also provide donated tissues, stem cells and cord blood. We are an essential part of the NHS, saving and improving lives through public donation. There is no requirement to test for SARSCoV-2. Coronaviruses are a family of viruses. There is no evidence of any type of coronavirus being transmitted through blood donation. No blood donation services are testing blood donations for the virus. We are currently appealing for normal donation not urgent donations. We need people to keep donating as normal to maintain stocks at good levels in the weeks and months ahead. Covid-19 transmission could go on for many months. If we called in too many donors now, that could leave us short of reliable donors in the next 12 to 16 weeks, a period when we may need those donors more. We may call donors to come forward or make other changes to collection but would do so at the most strategic time.
ten top tips to cope with kids & home working As the reality of the next few months sinks
in and more parents once again face the hardships of home schooling and home working, we offer suggestions for how parents can cope with the pressures of working from home with kids (again). “Our hearts literally sank when the Prime Minister said those words “schools are to close” because we remember what is was like last time – seriously tough times. Entertaining the kids whilst trying our best to keep working and the money coming in. Plus, last time the weather was nice, now it is awful”, explains Jonathan Ratcliffe from Office Provider Offices. co.uk Working from home is tough. Home schooling is very tough. So, if you must combine the two for a long period of time, how are you going to cope? “Home schooling is one of the hardest things we have done as parents. The expectation and the stress, and at the same time we are trying to hold down jobs – it’s a nightmare scenario”, explains Ratcliffe. “You are going to have to plan well, get organised and work to a strict timetable if you want to get everything done. Equally, you will need to have a proper split between work, school, fun and rest. You firstly need to take some time to come to terms with the change in lifestyle – and lower your expectations, because the minute you try and do too much, is when the stress will hit you like a brick wall – life has changed for a few months and you need to accept that.” So, to begin the lockdown: • Lower your expectations of what you will achieve with work • Communicate with your boss daily • Simplify your day into a set routine • Do not try and achieve too much • Pause and try and appreciate moments with your kids (if you can!) 10 tips on how to survive lockdown with your kids • START EARLY AT THE SAME TIME EACH DAY: Routine is important for good sleep and mental health, for both you and your kids. School starts at a set time, so make sure you

are ready and stick to the timetable. • GET DRESSED PROPERLY LIKE TEACHER AND STUDENT: Getting showered and dressed is important to divide sleep and school. • CREATE SPACES FOR DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES: You might set up a teaching room (kitchen), quiet room (spare bedroom) and a play area (living room) • STRUCTURE YOUR DAY LIKE A SCHOOL DAY: Teaching time, activity time, play time and lunch time – just like their normal school routine • MAKE A PLAN WITH YOUR KIDS: At the start of the day ask them what they want to do (within reason) so they feel involved • TURN OFF YOUR PHONE: How are your kids meant to feel involved if you are checking emails? • SET ASIDE BREAKS FOR TV, IPAD AND EXERCISE: Use these times to schedule work emails or calls • TAKE EXERCISE: Depending on where you live, if you have a garden or not – try and get some fresh air, this also allows you some headspace • FINISH AT A SET TIME, BEDTIME AT A SET TIME: By getting a routine drilled in early on, you can try and get the kids to sleep at a sensible time, thereby giving yourself some space to work if you need to • DON’T BE TEMPTED TO HIT THE BOOZE TOO MUCH: If you can, evening time will be the only real time you can realistically work. If you drink your concentration will be poor, sleep poor and you will wake in a grumpy mood. Try and keep drinking to a minimum. “The only positive is that you’ve done this before, and you can do it again – but life has changed and coming to terms with that is a good start. It is not an easy time for anyone, and especially the kids who will also be finding the change hard to cope with, more so if you are stressed! Good luck to everyone”, concludes Ratcliffe

Sheffield City Region Mayor calls on Government to provide hospitality sector with urgent ‘Christmas compensation’ With COVID-19 restrictions wiping out Christmas trade for businesses in South Yorkshire, and the region facing Tier 3 restrictions continuing into the New Year, Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis is calling on Government to provide businesses forced to close with essential Christmas compensation. Coronavirus has had a severe impact on the hospitality, accommodation and entertainment industry, with restrictions seeing businesses closed since October when South Yorkshire entered local restrictions ahead of national lockdown, and now remaining in Tier 3 through December and into the New Year. During this time, Government has provided local authorities with enough funds to only cover up to £3,000 of costs for businesses forced to close through the Local Restrictions Support Grant (LRSG). However, the grant levels fall short of the fixed costs facing many businesses, who must still pay rent, utilities, insurance and security as a minimum. For example, the monthly rent alone for a rent of £51k is £4,250 but the maximum grant value available is £3,000. The LRSG also does not take account of the huge loss of income from the crucial Christmas trading period, where some hospitality businesses make 40% of their annual takings. South Yorkshire’s councils have been using the Additional Restrictions Grant pot to top-up funds for businesses during December, but Government need to take action to provide further funds to businesses impacted by
COVID-19 restrictions. Now South Yorkshire is facing an extended period of Tier 3, the Mayor has called on Government to look again at the support available and increase the grant available for businesses forced to close by at least 50%. Mayor Dan Jarvis said: “If we don’t get help to businesses soon, it will be too late for many of them. This isn’t just about the short-term harm done today to workers and businesses, but about the long-term harm done tomorrow and beyond to our regional economy.
“If COVID has taught us anything, it’s how much we all value the places where we come together to spend time with family and friends: our favourite restaurants and pubs, and cherished arts, heritage, culture and entertainment venues. “In South Yorkshire we’ve worked to support those businesses that have fallen through the cracks of the national support scheme. We’ve made every pound of support go as far as possible, targeting support at businesses forced to close and those who have remained open but have been trading under severe conditions. “We’re also helping businesses in the supply chain of sectors forced to close due to restrictions; self-employed businesses with fixed property costs; and, we’ve allocated discretionary funds to our local authorities

to spend as they see fit to support people, businesses and communities. “But the paltry and dwindling support on offer from Government means we risk losing some hospitality and accommodation businesses forever, leaving our high streets hallowed out if we do not offer a lifeline at this critical time to support them. It’s why I’m calling for Christmas compensation for businesses who have remained closed due to ongoing Tier 3 restrictions.

SHEFFIELD CITY TRUST ANNOUNCES LOCKDOWN MEASURES AND COMFIRMS THERE ARE NO PLANS FOR THE CLOSURE OF FLYDSA ARENA & CITY HALL A STATEMENT FROM SHEFFIELD CITY TRUST - Dated 4th January 2021
The health and wellbeing of all our customers is our absolute priority at Sheffield City Trust. Following the latest Prime Minister’s Covid-19 announcement all SCT gyms, leisure centres & golf courses will close from Tuesday 5 January 2021 until Covid-19 restrictions are lifted - visit www.sheffieldcitytrust.org/faqs for further information about SCT Leisure Centres & golf courses. The Arena remains closed for all public events but is working closely with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals on a number of initiatives allowing the venue to play a small but important role within the Sheffield community - further details on the Arena’s role can be found at www. flydsaarena.co.uk/latest-news/sheffield-citytrust-working-in-collaboration-with-the-nhs-2. As part of the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, there is no prospect of any of our indoor entertainment venues being able to re-open until the Government gives the go ahead for mass gatherings to take place. We can confirm categorically that there is no plan for the permanent closure of the FlyDSA Arena - we are already scheduling & going on sale with events in 2021, 2022 & beyond. Sheffield City Trust is delighted to confirm that it has been awarded up to £2.243 million in funding from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund. Sheffield City Trust will continuing to work closely with Sheffield City Council during
this difficult time to ensure that there is a sustainable future for the city’s leisure and entertainment venues; with welcome financial subsidy to Sheffield City Trust during this difficult period. We are also working with the industry and event organisers and promoters to plan for a very exciting future and look forward to welcoming you back to the FlyDSA Arena as soon as possible. BLADES STILL IN SEARCH OF FIRST WIN
Two first-half goals condemned the Blades to defeat at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon. Jeffrey Schlupp struck early on, before substitute Eberechi Eze netted in the sixth minute of additional time at the end of the first period. For the clash in the capital, Wilder made three changes from the midweek loss at Burnley. Bogle was handed his full league debut, whilst Norwood and Fleck returned in midfield. Brewster dropped to the bench and was joined by young striker Hackford, as nine players were absentee because of illness, injury and suspension. United suffered the worst possible start, falling behind inside four minutes. Townsend’s ball down the left flank saw Zaha get the better of Egan before squaring to Benteke. The striker turned the ball into the run of SCHLUPP who slotted past Ramsdale with the aid of a deflection. Despite the untimely early concession, United were enjoying plenty of the ball and Mousset won a corner attempting to get the better of Kouyaté down the right, but a combination of Benteke and McArthur averted the danger from Fleck’s inswinging centre. The next meaningful action came on the half hour. Palace broke at pace down the left, but Egan did enough to stop Benteke after Schlupp and Zaha had combined to fashion an opening. As half-time approached, the Blades tested Guaita, following another spell of sustained possession and pressure. A switch of play to the right found Ampadu in space, his ball saw Bogle get in behind Mitchell and draw a save at the near post before Kouyaté hacked clear. Norwood’s deep ball into the box then found

Bogle, but Basham couldn’t swivel at make contact with the ball under pressure. As five minutes stoppage-time were indicated, Bogle was yellow carded for a foul to halt the progress of Zaha, who headed straight at Ramsdale from the resulting free-kick on the left. But in the final seconds of the first period, Palace doubled their lead. EZE collected the ball in his own half, turned away from Norwood and skipped past Ampadu before passing the ball into Ramsdale’s bottom corner from 20 yards. The early stages of the second period were a slow burner, prompting Wilder to make a change with Brewster replacing Mousset just after the hour mark. Norwood was booked for clipping the heals of the advancing Ayew. Moments later though, Zaha was unpunished despite raising his hands into the face of Bogle following a fair challenge by the Blades defender! Despite the clocking ticking down against them, the Blades continued to search for a route back into the game and Osborn won a corner with 20 minutes left, Kouyaté headed clear before charging down Fleck’s goal bound effort. The Blades continued to push forward and forced a third corner in quick succession. This one was played short, between Fleck and Norwood, but Guaita claimed the latter’s low cross at his near post. Ten minutes remained when Hackford was sent on for his senior debut, becoming the club’s youngest ever Premier League player. Bogle’s cross wasn’t cleared properly by Tomkins, but the ball wouldn’t dropped kindly for Norwood in the penalty area. At the other end, Palace broke down the left, Zaha got the better of Ampadu, but Egan put his body on the line again, this time to deny Townsend. Just before four additional minutes were signalled, Fleck was booked, before Hackford had his first sight of goal as Bogle found an advancing Basham inside the penalty area. The last action of the contest saw McGoldrick test Guaita from distance before a late corner came to nothing as a spirited showing from the Blades ultimately came to nothing.

We will see over the coming weeks With two wins from two games at the helm, Neil Thompson has urged his temporary charges to keep the foot to the floor into the New Year. Callum Paterson gave the Owls the perfect start to 2021 as his second half goal against Derby hauled the hosts out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. And Thompson says only the same 100% commitment is the minimum requirement here on in. He told swfc.co.uk: “We had to dig in there and we got into them at half time because it was pretty obvious we weren’t at it. “So we adjusted it, we had a word individually with one or two and we were much better in the second half. “We were too passive first half so we had to change the shape second half and we got the goal and got the win. “I’ve told the players that they can never be satisfied, they must always want more. They must always have that desire and we will see over the coming weeks. “They’re a smashing group, they have given everything again and that’s what they are going to have to continue to do. “That win will give everyone a lift and the fans in particular, they can’t be in the stadium but that will do everyone the world of good. “Six points makes such a difference and now we’ll give the lads a well earned rest over the weekend and get the programme together for next week.” Thompson also provided an update from the injury bay that continues to grow, with Josh Windass the latest entrant. The caretaker manager said: “It looks like Josh has a bit of a hamstring so we will have him assessed. “We were missing Keiren Westwood and Chey Dunkley today and if I’m being honest I think this busy spell of games has just caught up with them. “They’ve both been out for a while and played a few back to back games and the demands of football are such that the run of games does catch up with you. “Hopefully there’s nothing longer term and we will have them back soon.”
LEES IN TEAM OF THE WEEK Tom Lees has been included in the Sky Bet Championship Team of the Week. The defender played a big role in the Owls’ victory over Derby on Friday evening, claiming an assist for Callum Paterson’s goal and helping Wednesday to another clean sheet on home soil. It’s been a really strong festive period for Lees, who has been a mainstay in the team and also scored the crucial winner over Coventry last month. The Owls are now unbeaten in four Championship outings and have climbed out of the bottom three for the first time in 2020/21.

Club Doncaster chief executive Gavin Baldwin has paid tribute to Gill Coultard and Ron Flowers, after the two Doncaster footballers were awarded MBEs in the New Year’s honours list Thorne-born Gill was recognised for her achievements in football, which saw her earn more than 100 England caps over a 24-year playing career with the Belles after joining the club when she was just 13. Gavin said: “Both Gill and Ron deserve this recognition, and on behalf of everyone at Club Doncaster I’d like to congratulate them both. “Gill joined the Belles when she was still at school and was representing England before she turned 18 - an incredible achievement in itself. “To go on and win 119 caps and captaining both club and country is incredible, all while an amateur player. She helped the Belles to two titles and six FA Women’s Cups, and everyone at the Belles now is well aware they’re following in the footsteps of greats like Gill who broke down barriers for them.” Ron, who was born in Edlignton, was part of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning squad and played more than 400 times for Wolverhampton Wanderers after starting his career as a youngster at Rovers. Gavin added: “Although Ron did not play for the first-team, his brother John and uncle George both did and we consider all of them part of the Rovers family. “These two MBEs are great success stories for Doncaster, both have gone to locally-born people who represented their country in World Cups and hopefully serve as inspiration for others in the area to dream big too.”
“If you’re struggling, reach out” - Warne Following last night’s update from the Government which has resulted in another national lockdown, Rotherham United boss Paul Warne expressed his desire to record a video message in an attempt to reach out to our supporters. Millers fans will be aware that Warney has done a lot of video messages over the last 12 months, helping to mark birthdays, weddings and other special occasions, as well as sending messages of support to families who have lost loved ones, or people ill in hospital. This message from the Gaffer is one which reiterates the importance of kindness during these difficult times, but also, a reminder that there is support out there should anyone be struggling. There are so many fantastic charities and organisations in and around Rotherham, so if you are having a hard time, do not suffer in silence. “I just wanted to reach out - I know it has been a bad day for the news and we’ve got a full lockdown again. “Just look out for everyone again. Look out for your neighbours and get the social spirit going again knock on people’s doors and see if you can help out in any way. “Hopefully our performances on the football pitch can make you smile. “If you get bored or lonely, please tweet or Instahit or something, one of our players and wish them all the best, all the support we can get is great. It is going to be a tough run-in for us but we’ll give everything we can. “I know we’re having this lockdown and it will be difficult for a lot of people, but don’t forget, there are charities out there like Mind, who do really good work. “It is a difficult message for me to send in bad times but just be kind and help people out.” Don’t suffer in silence: Mind, Rotherham | 01709 919929 Samaritans | 116 123 Age UK, Rotherham | 01709 835214
Rotherham United are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former manager, Tommy Docherty, aged 92. Tommy’s name is arguably one of the most famous ever to be associated with the club, having arrived at Millmoor on the back of a spell as the boss of Chelsea. He would go on to enjoy a success-laden career in the dugout following his time with the Millers – the highlights of which included time spent as manager of his native Scotland and Manchester United. His appointment in South Yorkshire with the Millers - who were languishing in the lower echelons of the second tier - was met with national attention and put Rotherham firmly on the footballing map. ‘The Doc’, as he was affectionately known, was a larger-than-life character and his outgoing personality had garnered him plenty of attention from the press prior to his arrival, during a time when managers weren’t living in the goldfish bowl that they do now. To put his arrival at Millmoor into context for younger fans who may not be aware, it was arguably the equivalent of Jose Mourinho being appointed in the modern day. His stint with the Millers was only short following his arrival in 1967 but did include some historymaking moments. Tommy’s Rotherham United team, who made the fifth round (replay) of the competition, still to this day hold the record for the club’s longest run in the FA Cup, whilst ‘The Doc’ can also lay claim to making probably the best signing the Millers have ever made. It was Docherty who was responsible for spotting the talents of a certain Dave Watson, playing in the reserves at Millmoor for Notts County. Watson had been playing in midfield at the time, but the Scotsman had seen something in him which Millers fans, and later, fans of the England national team would come to enjoy. Having secured his signature from the Magpies for virtually nothing, ‘The Doc’ transformed Watson into a centre half and subsequently a firm favourite with the Millers faithful. His talents were so great in fact that Watson would go on to make 65 caps for England, a feat that would have been unimaginable to both the player himself and onlookers from the football world prior to his arrival at Millmoor. Docherty also brought in household names including Scottish duo Graham Leggat and Jim Storrie who had enjoyed such great success north of the border prior to their arrivals, whilst also looking to blood the club’s young talent – such was the manager’s style. Undoubtedly helped by his flamboyancy and charisma, ‘The Doc’ was a motivator in the dugout, rather than a traditional coach. After his time in South Yorkshire, he would go on to enjoy a sparkling managerial career and was best known for his five-year spell at Manchester United, which followed his stint in charge of the Scotland national team – a side who, under his guidance, were on course to qualify for the 1974 World Cup finals. Manchester United were relegated in 1974, but stuck by the Scotsman who bounced straight back to the top flight. They would go on to win the FA Cup and later the European Cup during his tenure. We were incredibly proud to welcome ‘The Doc’ back to Rotherham United in 2017, when he joined us as our guest at AESSEAL New York Stadium to mark the 50th anniversary of his appointment. Alongside a host of his former players, ‘The Doc’ is greeted by a fantastic reception at AESSEAL New York Stadium A host of his former players, including the legendary Johnny Quinn, also returned alongside him, in an outward display of his popularity with those he had worked with at Millmoor. Everyone at Rotherham United would like to pass on our heartfelt condolences to Tommy’s friends and family at this incredibly difficult time.
