south yorkshire facing more floods As Storm Christoph hits the UK, our region is facing yet more flood warnings as worried residents & businesses in many areas prepare for the possibility of even more damage and disruption to add to the ongoing problems of previous years and the stress of lockdown. With heavy rain forecast over the next few days, the council is working

with its partners to ensure the city is prepared. Streets Ahead, the council’s highway contractor, is prioritising gully cleaning around known flooding hotspots and preparing its operatives to respond swiftly should localised flooding occur. With rain, which started on the evening evening of Monday 18th January and is expected

to continue until Thursday 21st, local Councils are advising people to travel only where absolutely necessary and only for essential reasons, in line with current Covid restrictions. Please take extra care whilst driving and monitor the weather over the next few days. Vaccination centres are still open and getting to your appointment is

classed as essential travel. People with bookings are advised to still attend, unless your area is badly affected by the weather and it is unsafe for you to travel. Flood defence schemes are in place in key locations across the cities and Councils are continuing to work with the Environmental Agency as the

situation progresses. Issues on the roads should be reported to the council’s Streets Ahead team on 0114 273 4567. There will be numerous teams responding to reports of flooding and wet spots across the region.

own a piece of music history Abbey Road, the world’s most famous recording studios, are 90 years old this year. To celebrate, Ewbank’s Auctions will offer the original foyer doors for sale on February 25. As the studio plan accompanying the lot shows, these were the main internal doors through which many of the leading names from every period of Rock & Pop, from The Beatles and Pink Floyd to Elton John and Michael Jackson, would have passed to reach the sound stages and recording

studios. Most famously, this was the setting for The Beatles’ 1960s recordings with the ‘fifth Beatle’, their producer George Martin. Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – considered the most important album in the history of Rock and Pop – The White Album and Abbey Road were all created here. In fact, The Beatles recorded around 90 per cent of all their material at the studios between 1962 and 1970. Complete with their original brass hinges, the doors would have first welcomed Sir Edward Elgar when he conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and the teenage Yehudi Menuhin to crown the opening of the EMI Recording Studios in 1931. The doors were used in place right up until 1988 when they were removed as part of a major refurbishment. Letter of authenticity… and a ghostly tale Recording engineer and former Abbey Road manager Ken Townsend was there from 1950 to 1995 and worked on several Beatles albums, including Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, inventing the

Artificial Double Tracking (ADT) system that they were to use for phasing on Beatles records. He has provided a letter of authenticity to go with the doors – confirming that anyone who recorded at the studios would have passed through them – and that is also included with the lot.

A police officer on traffic duty flags down a car. “Sir, you appear to have 12 penguins in the back of your car.” “That’s right, officer, I do.” “Well that’s ridiculous – take them to the zoo straight away.” “OK officer.” And the car drives off. Next day, the same policeman in the same spot sees the same car drive past – with the penguins in the back. He flags him down again. “I thought I told you to take them to the zoo…” “Yes, officer, and it was great – today I’m taking them to the cinema.”

measured from decision to admit to admission. Our annual Winter flow project shows, in part, the true extent of 12-hour waits; data from 32 trusts across the UK in December alone shows over 12,400 patients spent over 12 hours in an ED – measured from when they arrived. We cannot properly tackle this problem unless we confront it properly, so we welcome the new metric being introduced by NHS England with the consultation on the Clinical Review of standards, which will measure 12 hour waits from arrival to discharge. This will help us see where the problems in Emergency Departments lie and help us to resolve issues quicker, including putting a stop to unsafe crowding and corridor care. We entered the pandemic short of staff and short of beds and now we are truly feeling those shortages. It is devastating. Departments are already working beyond normal full capacity but are still trying to expand capacity further. We are finding beds and resources wherever we can. “Healthcare staff have been doing this for eleven months, there’s no clap for carers or support anymore, there are only more patients, more deaths, more hours and more shifts, and this time they are being stretched more thinly..The lives of those in the community are at serious risk and excess deaths could soar quickly. It is incredibly distressing that surgeries and some other urgent care are being put on hold. We are also concerned that attendances are down; our fear is that there are people in the community who need urgent and emergency care who are not seeking it. We do not have the virus under control. The situation is far worse than April 2019 and what is happening is not sustainable. Our NHS is now at a tipping point and if it tips, we will not be able to stop it. Healthcare workers are doing an exceptional job in an emergency like no other, for many it may be traumatic. We must support each other and work together and get through the coming weeks. We can still mitigate the impact and minimise the risk of further damage.”
