20 YEAR PLAN APPROVED FOR STRONGER GROWTH IN REGION The Sheffield City Region Mayoral Combined Authority and Local Enterprise Partnership have approved their 20-year Strategic Economic Plan (SEP), which sets out local leaders’ blueprint to drive the region’s recovery from COVID and transform South Yorkshire’s economy and society for people, businesses and places. The SEP paves the way to a stronger, greener and fairer economy as the region looks to unlock its potential and create prosperity and opportunity for all. Implementing its 20-year Strategic Economic Plan will mean by 2041 the South Yorkshire economy will look very different, with an extra

£7.6bn GVA, 33,000 extra people in higher level jobs, reduced income inequality and improved wages by over £1,500 for the lowest paid, and a net zero carbon economy. Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, said: “The approval of the Strategic Economic Plan is a significant signal of intent to government, investors and people and businesses in our region. This landmark plan sets out how we will transform our region as we seek to overcome the biggest economic challenge in a generation. “We want to create good, high-paid jobs for local people, attract investment and ensure our people

have the skills they need to thrive. We will work with our partners to improve the health of our residents, reach net zero emissions by 2040 and transform the places people live. The Strategic Economic Plan provides the blueprint for how we can come together to build a stronger, greener and fairer city region – creating not just a bigger, but a better economy for us all. “The South Yorkshire economy has huge untapped potential. This is an unashamedly ambitious plan, but I am already working closely with our local authorities, business partners and Government to making our goals a reality.” James Muir, Chair of the

Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, welcomed the approval of the SEP and highlights the important role of the business community in delivering its ambitious aims: “The SEP is a fantastic example of how beneficial it is for the public and private sectors to come together so we can improve the lives of people across the region. “South Yorkshire’s business community is integral to the implementation of this plan as we look to accelerate them on the national and global stage and improve our ways of working so that business and employment contributes to the wellbeing and quality of life of our people. “Industrialising innovation

and creating the skill sets to match are at the heart of this Strategic Economic Plan. It will shape the way we operate for many years to come as we unlock the potential of people and businesses across South Yorkshire and generate a significant uplift in productivity and wellbeing across as broad a spectrum of our population as possible.” The Strategic Economic Plan has been developed in collaboration with South Yorkshire’s four councils and will help the Sheffield City Region MCA and LEP secure additional funding from Government, such as through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

the NHS led vaccination programme by contributing our knowledge and logistical assistance as a council. We’re here to help the NHS make this programme a success. Whilst we continue to provide this support, we must stress that the national lead for the rollout of the Covid vaccination programme is the NHS. We’re pleased to see the tremendous progress that is taking place every day, vaccinating our most vulnerable and atrisk residents. Our local NHS teams are in constant contact with central government about the rollout and as they receive updates, they are informing us. We will continue to share updates as often as we can based on what our local NHS teams tell us. What these local teams tell us is led by what they receive from national government. What I’d like to stress today is how important it is to take up the offer of the vaccine if you are invited to receive it. If you have arranged an appointment please turn up for it. Please don’t call your GP or hospital, when it is your time to be vaccinated you will receive a phone call. The NHS has comprehensive plans in place and you will be contacted when it is your time. Please do not turn up to a vaccination site or your GP surgery without an appointment. Only those with booked appointments will receive their vaccination, at all sites. Also please do not come early for your appointment as this will impact on social distancing in some centres. Whilst the vaccine will protect those who have it from being very ill, the virus is still being transmitted. It is as important as ever to keep your distance from those who do not live with you, to wear a mask in closed and non-ventilated spaces and to wash your hands. This will prevent further infections and save lives.

blades push leaders to the wire In the second game of United’s double header in Manchester this week, United continued their improved fine as they pushed leaders Manchester City all the way at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon, but on this occasion they fell just short of brining home any points. Gabriel Jesus scored what proved to be the decisive goal early on in Manchester, but the Blades were always in the contest and came within a whisker of a deserved point at the end, as John Fleck rifled an effort inches wide of the far post. For the second trip to Manchester this week, Wilder made four changes. Egan returned from suspension, whilst Burke, Bogle and Brewster all started, with Jagielka, Bryan, Sharp and McGoldrick dropping to the bench, where they were joined by McBurnie. After a quiet opening to the game, the Blades fell behind in the ninth minute. Torres latched on to Ampadu’s attempted headed clearance, got the better of Bogle on the byline before squaring to JESUS, who controlled before firing into the net from close-range. City were understandably enjoying the majority of the ball and Bernardo almost capitilised having anticipated Norwood’s header back to Ramsdale. Norwood was then booked for a foul on Foden, attempting to stop a counter-attack, before Basham was ideally positioned to clear the danger as Jesus headed Bernardo’s cross into a dangerous area in the box. The home continued to have the ball, but United were working hard to keep a shape and keep them at bay wherever possible. In response, Brewster found a yard of space on the edge of the penalty area and drew

a save from Ederson, then Dias had to be at his best to deny Burke a clear sight of goal. With half-time on the horizon, Walker got the better of Bogle to get a cross in from the byline, but Ramsdale palmed the deflected cross over the bar as he backtracked. United comfortably dealt with the resulting corner and that was the last action of note before referee Coote called a halt to proceedings. The second period followed a similar pattern to the first, but in truth United rarely looked in real danger of a second concession, with Ramsdale looking assured and the outfield players continually putting bodies on the line. Bogle did well to stop Torres getting into the area, before Zinchenko forced Ramsdale into a smart save diving away to his left, before tipping over Laporte’s header from the subsequent corner. McGoldrick had earlier replaced Brewster, prior to Sharp and McBurnie been thrown on with 12 minutes remaining in search of that equaliser. Baldock and then Egan were booked for halting breaks, before United created their best chance of the contest. Egan’s punt forward was held up by Sharp, the skipper laid off for Fleck and his well stuck half volley had Ederson beaten but flew agonisingly wide of the far post. Five minutes of added time were signalled as Norwood saw a goal bound shot by Dias, before Ramsdale made the save of the game to stop Jesus from grabbing his second after Foden had broke from Fernandinho’s pass. The action ended with the Blades attacking, but City held on to notch their 12the consecutive win in all competitions despite a gallant fight from the visitors.

Liam Palmer’s first goal in almost a decade secured a vital three points for Wednesday against Preston at Hillsborough. Palmer scored the only goal of a low key game on the stroke of half time to register only his second ever strike that was enough to seal victory. Wednesday’s longest serving player last netted way back in September 2011 and his latest hit could prove pivotal in the basement battle. The Owls made a bright start on another freezing S6 afternoon as Callum Paterson swivelled in the box to fire narrowly wide. Wednesday had the edge as the first half developed, playing neat possession football and taking the game to Preston. Chances, though, were at a premium although the same was true at the other end where Keiren Westwood had little to do to warm the hands. That was until a minute before the break when Wednesday burst into the lead. Elias Kachunga nodded across a packed goalmouth where Palmer was in the right place at the right time to prod home. Matt Penney scuffed wide at the start of the

From one to 11 After Liam Palmer scored what proved the only goal of the game to beat Preston, Neil Thompson hailed the whole team from the back to the front. Palmer netted only the second goal of his Owls career to secure a fourth win on the bounce at Hillsborough. And caretaker manager Thompson said, first and foremost, the work rate of the team underlined the importance of bouncing back from the midweek defeat at Coventry. He said: “From one to 11, from Westy and all

second period, so too did Preston’s Brad Potts, before Emil Jakobsen shot into the midriff of Westwood. Potts then forced Westwood into a low diving save as the visitors sought a route back into the contest, committing more bodies forward and they might have levelled on 67 minutes. Potts pulled back from the byline for the advancing Ben Whiteman but the midfielder blazed over from 10 yards. The Owls countered with Barry Bannan delivering a fierce goalbound drive that required Iversen to spectacularly divert. Back the ball went into the Wednesday area where Scott Sinclair headed an Alan Browne cross past the post. And that was as good as it got for the Lilywhites, who saw an impressive away record dented while the Owls posted a fourth successive home win. Wednesday: Westwood, Palmer, Lees, Hutchinson, Penney, Urhoghide, Pelupessy, Bannan, Reach (Luongo 80), Paterson (Rhodes 83), Kachunga (Windass 71)

the way through the team, we were excellent today and deserved the win. “The most important thing was bouncing back in a positive way from the Coventry game and we did that today. “Work rate is free, there is no price on giving everything, it’s the first requirement. Everybody worked hard for each other and the lads got what they deserved, which is a massive three points. “But it’s one win, that’s all, and nothing is decided at this stage of the season. We have 21 games left there’s a long, long way to go with plenty of points to play for.”

Moore: Balcombe SUFC Togetherness pleased to 2020/21 got us through play his part

Blades win LMA award

The League Managers Association’s panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett, Barry Fry Paul Ince and Rachel Yankey, has determined that the LMA Performance of the Week Award, in association with Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, should go to Sheffield United for the 2-1 victory against Manchester United on Wednesday 27th January 2021. The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,500 competitive matches in professional football. United boss Chris Wilder has received a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and an LMA Performance of the Week trophy. Kean Bryan and Oli Burke scored the goals that secured three points at Old Trafford.

Pressure is part and parcel of the game Neil Thompson discussed the pressure that goes hand in hand with the Owls’ current situation in the Championship. Wednesday had enjoyed a really positive run of results in the league before a COVID outbreak in the camp but resumed the campaign earlier this week with a disappointing defeat at Coventry. The games are now coming thick and fast and with the Owls sitting in the bottom three, points are a must in the coming weeks. Of course, pressure is natural in this situation and Thompson says it’s something the players must cope with in this battle at the bottom of the division. “Pressure is part of playing in this division,” he said during Friday morning’s press conference. “Pressure is being where we are in the league and we’ve got to react to it and react in the right manner. “Too many times we’ve gone behind this season and not come back, so yes we have discussions about that without a shadow of a doubt. “We have got to find that resilience and bounce back when things go against you because in a game, no matter how dominant you are or if you are ahead, there are going to be times when you’ll have your backs against the wall. “That is the Championship. They might score or put you under pressure for five or ten minutes and you’ve got to ride it out and bounce back. “We have got to be able to tough things out when we need to. “The other night was one of those typical games and I think we made one or two mistakes and then the game was stretched towards the end as we went after an equaliser.” The resilience and mental toughness Thompson discussed will play a big part in the second half of the season as the Owls look to haul themselves towards safety. He continued: “People have got to trust themselves, trust their ability, trust their fitness levels and trust each other. “That’s what football is about, these players have been in football all their lives and they’ll have had tough times in the past where they’ve maybe had to readjust their game a little, play the percentages or whatever that may be, but you must find a way. “Players have been through that before, as well as myself, and we have to draw on those experiences.”

Darren Moore hailed his teams’ togetherness as they saw of severe pressure to register three impressive points against an in form Lincoln City. Lincoln boasted most of the possession throughout the game but a first half strike from Taylor Richards and two astounding penalty saves from Ellery Balcombe ensured Rovers took all three points from the Imps. He said: “We were under extreme pressure throughout the game today and what I thought got us through the game was our ethos, culture and togetherness of the group. “There weren’t many aspects of the game plan we got right. We did counter-attack well and the goal did come from that moment. We defended very well today also. “We wanted to stamp our authority on the game but they didn’t allow us to do that and they got the upper hand. When we look back on the game there’s lots to learn about but equally there is lots to be pleased about. Last season we would have probably gone on to lose that game.” As well as praising Ellery Balcombe for his two remarkable penalty saves in the game – Darren Moore was quick to praise unity of his squad to work as hard as they did to get a result. He added: “Credit to Ellery for making two fabulous saves. Those two saves will do him the world of good. “Moments like these can only bring the squad closer and you don’t forget them. “Our work off the ball has had to be better this year. It is something we’ve worked on in training and its paid off today.”

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne felt his side gave a good account of themselves in their 3-1 defeat to Swansea City at AESSEAL New York Stadium and felt they were undone by some moments of quality from the high-flying Swans. The Millers started brightly on home soil but found themselves two goals behind at the break, thanks to two long-range strikes from Conor Hourihane and Matt Grimes. Warne’s side battled bravely in the second half and their pressure was rewarded on 65 minutes, when Freddie Ladapo nipped in to head home Wes Harding’s long throw. However, despite a barrage of pressure from the home side, it was Swansea who found the decisive fourth goal courtesy of substitute Jay Fulton’s first touch, 15 minutes from time. Rotherham didn’t give the game up as Clark Robertson’s effort cannoned off the crossbar shortly after, but ultimately their valiant efforts were not enough, as the high-fliers took the points. “I thought we played all right, first half, they didn’t really cut us open, which we were fearful of with Swansea being a very, very good team,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk. “As soon as Hourihane hit it, he sent it out wide and that was in. The second goal was avoidable but it’s another great strike. We went in at half time,

Ellery Balcombe was pleased to play his part after saving two penalties in the win against Lincoln City in Sky Bet League One. Balcombe kept out both Jorge Grant and Anthony Scully from the spot in the second-half to secure a 1-0 victory for Darren Moore’s side. He said: “It’s really good to be able to do my bit, it was important that we kept them out because we knew it was a big game. “I watched the penalty takers before the game but it’s all about feeling at the time and analysing their run up and body language. “The tackle from myself was something I’ll learn from, I shouldn’t have come out for it but luckily I made up for it with the save.” The win at the LNER Stadium was Rovers fourth on the bounce in the league, and Balcombe says the focus always remains on the next game. He added: “We just have to keep going now and keep building, we know what we want as a squad and we’ll push as much as we can for that. “The mentality here is good and we know we’re in a good position, but we won’t get too high and quickly focus on the next game.”

just tweaked it a little bit but we weren’t overly disappointed with our performance. “It was two bits of quality and sometimes you just have to hold your hands up. “I thought the lads gave a good account of themselves, second half. We made loads of changes and at 2-1 I thought the game could have gone in either direction. It was another great finish for their third goal and it was game over. “Sometimes you come away from a defeat and think about what you got wrong or about how some of the lads didn’t play to their optimum, but sometimes you have to accept the fact that the opposition beat you. “It wasn’t us beating ourselves. Their finishes were excellent and they go away with the three points.” New loan-signing Ryan Giles was introduced to the action at half-time to make his home debut and certainly made a positive impact with his direct running and ability to beat a man, something which impressed his new manager. “He caused no end of problems down this left side he gave us a bit of natural balance which is what we’ve been missing. I thought Wilesy was outstanding and covered virtually every blade of grass. On another day it might bounce for you in the box and you come away with a draw. “There’s no complaints from me for my lads’ effort, it’s just disappointing we’ve come away with nothing. “I just said to the lads, we do show opposition respect but we do have to play our way and pick up points. If you’ve watched the game I don’t think there was a massive void. There were bits of class in the final third that have cost us today.”
