rates to rise by 4.9% as council balances the books The Council have released Sheffield’s 2021/22 budget, investing in the care sector, youth services and community safety, giving Council Tax support to those who need it most, retaining citywide essential services to all residents, and delivering on priorities for a sustainable future, despite the challenges brought about by the global Covid-19 pandemic. They have achieved a balanced position, but there remains an uncertain picture beyond 2022 as the impact of responding the pandemic continues. The Council claims they faced unprecedented resource and financial pressures when coronavirus plunged the country into lockdown
last March. The focus of the response has been working alongside partners and communities to keep people safe and well, protect the most vulnerable, help people to get back to school and work, and support economic recovery. This has included helping 22,000 people through the community helpline, distributing hundreds of thousands of PPE items per week, supporting schools to stay open for children of key worker and vulnerable families, assisting 4,700 businesses across the city to access grants totalling £116million, and much more. The financial impact of this response has resulted in Sheffield facing a budget gap of over £60million and
uncertainties around the level of Government funding beyond the next financial year. A balanced position has been reached for the coming financial year, but this relies on: Increasing council tax by the maximum 4.99 percent Delivery of £21 million in service area and corporate savings £21 million of Central Government, mainly Covidrelated, funding. Councillor Terry Fox, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “After initially having a balanced budget we have actually faced one of the most difficult challenges of our lifetime in responding to this pandemic.
“We will always prioritise the needs and wellbeing of our residents, and that continues this year, but means making some difficult decisions. Pressures on our services have never been so testing as people are relying on vital services, even more so now than before. “We have again managed to reach a balanced financial position for the year ahead, but this relies on us making millions in savings, and with so many unforeseen demands and changes the road ahead is very uncertain. Throughout the pandemic our dedicated workforce has risen to the many challenges and we are extremely grateful for and proud of all their efforts. It is their hard work,
along with the fantastic efforts of our partners and communities, that has made it possible for us to continue and reach this balanced position for the year ahead. Plans for 2021/22 will form the foundations for recovery and for Sheffield’s future, building upon the citywide unity that has been evident throughout the pandemic and the opportunities that have come as a result. We’ll see additional support for the most vulnerable and our businesses, further commitment to tackling inequalities, and more empowered and safer communities so that we can focus on recovery and growth together.”

promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years ofservice I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

great week for six point millers Rotherham United climbed out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone, by earning a narrow Roses victory over Preston North End, and record their fourth win in six games. On a cold, soggy afternoon in Lancashire, Paul Warne’s side were quick out of the blocks and they went ahead inside the first minute when Joe Rafferty put through his own goal. The hosts threatened on numerous occasions either side of the interval, but a combination of lady luck and Viktor Johansson being in fine form, kept them at bay. Against the run of play, Ben Wiles doubled the Millers lead, and despite Ched Evans halving the deficit for the home side, Rotherham ran down the clock to do the double over Preston, just days after Derby suffered the same fate. For the trip over the Pennines, Warne reshuffled his pack, by making five changes to his starting line-up. Centre-half Angus MacDonald returned to the Millers rearguard while Ryan Giles and Lewis Wing were rewarded for their impressive substitute cameos against the Rams, by being handed their first Rotherham starts. Warne also freshened up his attacking options with Freddie Ladapo and George Hirst leading the visiting line. Following the club’s hectic Sky Bet Championship schedule, club captain Richard Wood, Matt Olosunde, Wiles and men of the moment, Matt Crooks and Michael Smith, were all taken out of the firing line, by being given a well-earned rest, but the quintet were all named among the substitutes. There was also a welcome sight, prior to kick-off, with long-term injury absentee Kieran Sadlier being put through his paces in the Millers warmup, although the Irishman was not part of the matchday squad. Despite the number of changes, Rotherham continued in a similar vein to how they finished the Derby affair, by making a dream start, as they opened the scoring - with just around 17 seconds on the clock, in bizarre circumstances. The visitors were incisive from the kick-off and following a number of passes involving Wes Harding and Jamie Lindsay, which saw an advantage played after Harding was felled, Wing took up the baton to give Ladapo, a chance to strike, and he didn’t need a second invitation to dig out a shot which was deflected into the path of Rafferty, who was marshalling a Millers attacker, but in an attempt to clear the danger, he instinctively headed towards his own goal, and former Rotherham ‘keeper Daniel Iversen, was helpless, as it found the corner of the home net. The Millers were naturally in confident mood, and Clark Robertson took aim with his favoured left-foot, but Liam Lindsay
bravely blocked his effort on the edge of the box before the Stoke loanee had Preston’s first sight of goal when he latched onto Anthony Gordon’s free-kick, but he took a heavy touch and the chance was lost. Rotherham’s early momentum was dealt a blow when Lindsay, who has been in excellent form, was unable to shrug off a muscle strain sustained following an innocuous challenge near the touchline and he was replaced by Wiles. The Millers were still trying to get their heads around the change when Gordon fashioned an opening and Jayson Molumby got the better of Dan Barlaser, before trying his luck from distance, but Johansson could watch his effort sail harmlessly by. The home side were growing into the game and the Millers had a moment of concern when Barlaser was penalised for hauling down Gordon on the edge of the box, and the Everton youngster dusted himself down, to take the resultant free-kick, but he curled his effort wide. Gordon was proving to be a thorn in the Millers side, and Michael Ihiekwe showed his defensive mettle, by blocking his route to goal, with a fine tackle, following a dangerous run before Gordon planted the following corner, under Johansson’s nose and just below the crossbar, but the Swedish stopper did enough to hold off the attentions of Tom Barkhuizen, and swipe the ball to safety. Minutes later, Barlaser was the first to see yellow for bringing down Andrew Hughes in full flow before Harding denied Gordon at close quarters. In a rare Rotherham foray, Ladapo drilled a low cross-cum-shot which Iversen spilled initially, but gathered at the second attempt before Gordon threatened the Rotherham goal, with another teasing run and shot, which flew narrowly wide. Alex Neil’s men were turning up the tempo and Rafferty almost atoned for his earlier error, by swinging over a centre which was met by the head of Evans, but Johansson produced a fine, diving save to keep the ball out before the Millers ‘keeper was called into action, once again, when Ryan Ledson clipped a cross, which caught the Rotherham defence square, and Barkhuizen looked a certain scorer, as he looked to steer the ball goalwards, but Johansson was proving a difficult obstacle to overcome, as he produced another fine reflex stop, to deny him and Evans on the follow-up. The former Blades striker was cautioned for the over-zealous nature of his challenge, which saw Johansson require lengthy treatment, before being go-ahead to resume. The Millers’ goal was leading a charmed life and none more so, than just before the break, when Robertson was penalised for a foul, just outside the box, and Ben Whiteman almost

punished the visitors to the full, when he curled a delicious effort, which smashed against the upright, before hitting the flying Johansson, and the ball dribbled fortuitously across the goalline, by narrowly evading a number of home runners, who would have had a tap-in. Half-time- Preston North End 0 Rotherham United 1 Following the break, Rotherham had another let-off when Preston launched the ball into the box and Whiteman latched onto the pieces, to drill a low effort which evaded the full-stretched dive of Johansson, but flew narrowly past the upright. Warne’s side were struggling to stem the flow of the game, but, after Ladapo headed into the side netting following a pinpoint Giles delivery, the visitors gave themselves some much-needed breathing space, by doubling their lead on 55 minutes. There looked little danger for the hosts until Giles injected pace into a Millers move before Ladapo found Wing, in the box. The Middlesbrough loanee kept his nerve, to weigh up his options, among a number of Preston bodies, before playing a perfectlyweighted pass across the box, and Wiles was the grateful recipient, as he used the onrushing home defender, as a shield, to calmly stroke the ball into the home net giving Iversen no chance. Just past the hour mark, Barkhuizen cut inside Robertson with menace, before stinging the palms of Johansson with a low effort before Hirst had a glimpse of goal, at the other end, but Iversen smothered his tame shot. The Millers were going for the jugular and Wing’s defensive-splitting pass looked to be out of the reach of Wiles, but Iversen hesitated from his line, and the Rawmarsh-born youngster, sensed an opportunity before clipping the ball over the Danish ‘keeper, who got a slight touch, and the ball whistled just wide. However, Preston were
handed a lifeline with 25 minutes to go when Rotherham were caught napping from a short corner and Ledson swung a high centre which saw Evans in an aerial duel with Johansson, and despite the home frontman appearing to go up aggressively, the ball squirmed away from Johansson’s grasp, and Evans reacted quickest to slide the ball into the unguarded net. The goal prompted a flurry of changes by both sides and sub Smith, just seconds after being introduced, forced Iversen into a near post save before Barkhuizen had a snap shot blocked by Robertson en-route to goal. The game was on a knife-edge, and Wing got the ball from under his feet to curl an inviting centre which was inch-perfect for the perfectly timed run of Wiles, and with Iversen once again hesitant, Wiles had the chance to loop his header over him, but he disappointingly failed to hit the target. With time running out for the hosts, the Millers were indebted to an offside award by the assistant referee, in preserving their slender advantage. Harding failed to clear the danger on the edge of the box and sub Daniel Johnson showed fleet of foot, to slide the ball into the path of Scott Sinclair, who calmly stroked the ball past Johansson to find the heart of the Millers goal – but to the visitors’ relief, the goal was chalked off – with TV replays showing the decision to be a tight one. In the remaining minutes, Smith had a chance to ease Rotherham nerves with a stinging drive which Iversen parried before Crooks ballooned the rebound over the bar. In a nerve-jangling end to the game, Johnson’s weak effort was straight down the throat of Johansson while Ihiekwe and Crooks were booked, late on. However, the Millers successfully weathered four minutes of stoppage time, to earn a vital victory and give their Sky Bet Championship survival hopes, another shot in the arm.
rovers chasing automatic places Rovers go into their midweek fixture at Fleetwood only 3 points behind leaders Lincoln, level on points with Hull in 2nd and with games in hand on both clubs - so it was no wonder that manager Darren Moore looked on the game with in-form Oxford as a key step in their quest for automatic promotion. But the manager also felt the game against Oxford United was an excellent advert for Sky Bet League One football. Rovers came out on top of a five goal thriller courtesy of strikes from Jon Taylor, Fejiri Okenabirhie and Taylor Richards which helped Rovers maintain their winning run while stopping Oxford’s 13-game unbeaten run. Moore said: “With the form we were both in before this game I think the game lived up to the standard and was a good advert for League One football. Karl Robinson and I were full of praise for about how both sets of players went about their business today. We scored some good goals but once the game went to 3-2 it was about resilience and defending. At times when there was a change of possession we could have used
the ball better by making better decisions. But that is only a small critique because Oxford played their part and pressed us really well. The goals we scored were good because they were composed, and we had to take our chances when they did come.” Coming into the game, Moore knew Rovers were going to have to be resilient defensively, but he was equally pleased with how Rovers attacked Oxford. He added: “Part of what we have been working on in training is being more clinical with our finishing and it has paid off during games. All three goal scorers took their goals well today in a high-level match. Starting the second-half, we wanted to stamp our authority on the game. I told the lads to show more composure on the ball because I thought we could do better in possession during the first-half. When we did venture up the pitch we started to cause them problems. Defending is part of the game. There’s two parts to a game – there is out of possession and in possession. We knew Oxford were going to come onto us and they can pin you back if you’re not careful.”

blades emptyhanded in another close encounter
The Blades went into Sunday’s game with four changes from the side that had beaten West Brom in midweek. Ethan Ampadu was not allowed to face his parent club, and the injury to George Baldock meant Jaden Bogle reverted to starting on the right, Max Lowe coming in on the left and Kean Bryan returning to the starting line up in place of Ampadu. Up front Bruke & Mc Burnie came in for Billy Sharp & McGoldrick, as Chris Wilder maintained his recent preference to rotate his starting strikers. A great chance went begging almost from kick-off. McBurnie threaded a great ball to Burke, who fired wide from inside the area with his first touch of the ball. United thought they had a penalty when bash was fouled. Referee Kevin Friend initially awarded the spot kick, but VAR intervened to show Basham marginally offside as the cross came into the box. But the visitors went ahead before the break when Mason Mount found the bottom corner following Timo Werner’s cross from the left. Chelsea then conceded the first goal of Tuchel’s four-game reign in calamitous circumstances when Rudiger, with Oliver Burke breathing down his neck, poked past Edouard Mendy into his own net, after a great run into the box from Olly McBurnie. The winner arrived in bizarre circumstances. Werner was brought down by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for what looked like a clear penalty, but referee Kevin Friend ignored Chelsea’s appeals and waved play on. The action continued for more than a minute before VAR intervened once more, but despite the delay, Jorginho kept his cool from the spot for his sixth goal of the season. The Blades, who had won three of their previous five games, pressed for a late equaliser but found Rudiger in the way and missed out on the chance to move above second-bottom West Brom. Since winning their first game of the season, against Newcastle, last month the Blades have won twice more, against Manchester United and West Brom. However, the gap to survival has grown from nine points to 12 as the teams above the bottom three have also started to find form. That has not disheartened Chris Wilder’s team though, as they chase an unlikely escape from the bottom three, and although Chelsea were on top after a poor start, it did not stop the hosts asking questions of their expensively-assembled opponents. Under instruction from the bellowing Wilder on the touchlines, the Blades were making the Chelsea defence look shaky, and Jayden Bogle almost cut through them with a mazy run. Although their equaliser was fortunate, Sheffield United will argue they had shown enough willing to deserve a goal - but having been provided with a gift via Rudiger, they then returned the favour. Bryan, who was otherwise excellent, left his back pass short, allowing Werner to nip in before Ramsdale, who needed treatment to a resulting head injury. The hosts tried to get back into the game once more as Wilder introduced David McGoldrick and Sharp, but Rudiger and latterly Mendy stood in their way. Chris Wilder said afterwards “It’s an incredibly tough division that we’re competing in and when you’re up against the likes of Chelsea, with the quality they’ve got, and can call off the bench. We’re always underdogs - massive underdogs. We were fighting with one arm behind our backs last year and maybe two now, plus half a blindfold. We’re fighting and we’re punching and the boys believe they can win a group of games between now and the end of the season and we’ll keep that belief.”

owls put to sword as millwall run riot in 2nd half
Wednesday suffered their first defeat under the caretaker charge of Neil Thompson as Millwall came from behind to win 4-1 at the Den. The in-form Callum Paterson extended his purple patch to give the Owls an early lead but Kenneth Zahore levelled with a penalty before the break. The second period belonged to the hosts, though, and quickfire goals from Scott Malone and Ben Thompson set the hosts on the road to victory. Mahlon Romeo completed the scoring at the last to conclude an emphatic victory. A scrappy opening to the game promptly gave way to the opener 10 minutes in and it was that man Paterson on target. Elias Kachunga darted down the left flank and rolled across to Paterson, who slotted past the grounded Bartosz Bialkowski at the second attempt. That gave Wednesday the confidence to take a grip on the game – Joey Pelupessy slashed wide as he sought to match the only goal of his SWFC career so far scored against Millwall in February 2018. The Lions had to wait until the midway point of the first half to show their teeth when Ryan Leonard ran almost the full length of the field only to misdirect his pass to the onrushing Zahore. But Leonard had more fortune on 38 minutes when he was instrumental in the equaliser. The midfielder turned Pelupessy in the box and was held back by the Dutchman Zahore stepped up to slam past Westwood from the spot. Millwall started the second half on the front foot and George Evans hooked over the top from a decent chance straight after the resumption. Then, Westwood made two superb saves inside a minute to keep the hosts at bay. First the Irishman dived to claw away a Jon Dadi Bodvarsson curler before somehow keeping
out Shaun Hutchinson’s powerful header from the resulting corner. Westwood saved low from substitute Thompson moments later but the Lions struck twice in as many minutes to put the game to bed. Malone jinked his way inside the box and smashed hard and low on the volley to give his side the upper hand on 68 minutes. And there was barely time for the celebrations to subside before Millwall further extended their lead. Options seemed few when Thompson picked up possession on the right flank but the youngster looked up to deliver a looping cross cum shot that flew into the top corner. It was a double blow from which Wednesday could not recover and to cap a miserable afternoon in the capital, Romeo found the net with a daisycutter from distance in the last minute. The manager reflected on the chnage the second half brought in his team’s fortune and looked back over the change in impetus that the break brought to the game. Neil Thompson said the Owls’ second half display cost them a result in the capital as they fell to a 4-1 defeat against Millwall at the Den. Callum Paterson had put Wednesday in front, but the home side came out stronger in the second half to turn the game on its head. Thompson said: “We were more than in the game at half time. They came into it and we looked leggy in the second half. Millwall were allowed to play and they played to their strengths, we were found wanting in the second half. It was working in the first half, but in the second we dropped below the level you need to be at. We had a long journey for our game in midweek, whereas Millwall didn’t. It’s not an excuse but it is a fact and we looked leggy in the second half. We’ve got to regroup as we have another big game on Tuesday.”
