world class development for olympic legacy park Sheffield City Council and Scarborough Group International (SGI) have struck a development agreement to transform Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park into a community for the health, wellbeing, sport and activity sectors. It is the latest commitment from the developers to support the city’s economic growth, with the massive project is intended to create up to 5,600 high-value jobs.
SGI has developed a masterplan for approximately 850,000 sq ft of commercial space across an 80acre zone. It is already home to significant sporting, education and research institutions, including the English Institute for Sport Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University’s Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering, iceSheffield, Fly DSA Arena, UTC Sheffield
Olympic Legacy Park and Oasis Academy Don Valley. Work has also started on the Legacy Community Stadium, which will provide 23,000 sq ft of flexible business space, a professional-quality artificial grass pitch and a covered stadium that will eventually have capacity for up to 3,900 spectators. Councillor Bob Johnson, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “The Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is a well-established
hub for health and wellbeing, sport and education and cuttingedge research that will help to transform healthcare nationally, and this next phase of the development is extremely exciting for Sheffield. We are pleased to be working with Scarborough Group to bring substantial investment from the private sector to further advance this, bringing many benefits to the people of Sheffield, creating

jobs and supporting our businesses. As the UK’s fourth-largest city with an internationally recognised reputation for our abundance of green spaces, sporting history and innovative thinking, we are well placed to welcome this new development and investors to the city. I look forward to working with all of our partners to deliver further phases of this trailblazing Park over the coming years.”

it’s showtime for roundabout! It’s the greatest show…a day of musical theatre excitement and excellence that comes to Sheffield this summer in support of South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout! The Musical Theatre Drive-In, organised and staged by Roundabout, is a theatrical extravaganza that will be be live in the orange car park at Meadowhall Shopping Centre on Saturday June 12. Among the organisations already supporting the event are Meadowhall, The Leadmill, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Hallam University. But before the curtain rises on one of the year’s most colourful live entertainments, organisers are looking for performers to volunteer their talents and fill the stage with music, movement and drama. The plan is to have four full performances throughout the day - at 10am, 1pm, 4pm and 7pm - giving plenty of opportunity for South Yorkshire’s most talented actors, singers and theatre companies to take to the stage for the first time since the pandemic lockdown saw all live performances cancelled. From Hairspray to Annie, We Will Rock You to Mamma Mia, Kinky Boots to The Rocky Horror Show, the opportunity is there to bring some of the
most popular theatre hits to new life in support of Roundabout. The shows will have a drive-in format, with all vehicles safely social distanced and with the numbers of performers on stage limited to follow all current government safety guidelines. “Roundabout has been badly hit by the pandemic and to ensure we can continue running our services and be there to support as many young people as possible, we are looking to the future and creating events to help inspire our supporters,” said the charity’s Events Fundraiser Emily Bush. “This is a true drive-in experience but instead of a movie, we are aiming for a fantastic display of live entertainment. Each show will last around 90 minutes and will feature performers from across the Yorkshire region singing the top hits from musical theatre. Sheffield is a city that really supports the arts and we cannot wait to be able to bring theatre back to the city in a covid-secure way - but to do that we need to hear from both groups and individuals. We know that all South Yorkshire’s performers have missed more than a year of theatre and that their audiences have missed them too so this will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the best of live community theatre and
support a great charity at the same time.” Anybody interested in joining the Musical Theatre Drive-In talent lineup should email Emily at emily.bush@roundaboutltd.org for full details.
“You haven’t listened to a word I’ve said, have you?” Always seems like a strange way for my wife to start a conversation with me.
Nothing embarrasses a psychic more than throwing them a surprise party. I couldn’t afford to take my kids to Sea World. So I took them to Barnsley Fish Market, saying, “Shhhhh ... they’re all asleep.” My wife says she’s going to leave me if I don’t get help for my alcoholism. I’ll drink to that! I was walking through the park before when a policeman came over to me. “Excuse me sir.” he said, “You haven’t seen a bloke with black hair, a beard, about 5’10 around have you?” “No,” I replied, “I’ll keep an eye out though, can’t be many people around with a beard that bloody long.”

council statement nominate a young changemaker in your area for the 2021 Diana Awards! on household Nominate a young changemaker today in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales. Do you know a young person who is changing your community and improving lives? Celebrate their achievements by nominating them for a 2021 Diana Award. This year is especially significant as July marks what would have been Diana, Princess of Wales’ 60th Birthday. The Diana Award is the only charity in memory of the late Princess and her belief that young people have the power to change the world. Successful nominations will be honoured at a virtual award ceremony in the summer and will pay tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales in the days leading up to what would have been her 60th birthday. Last year, The Duke of Sussex, Dame Emma Thompson DBE, Liam Payne, Will Poulter, Dan Smith from Bastille and more surprised 2020 recipients in the first Diana Award virtual ceremony including fundraiser Alana Habergham-Rice, 12 from Sheffield. Research from The Diana Award demonstrates that, despite the pandemic, the vast majority of young people want to make a positive impact on society. Nominating them for The Diana Award is the most prestigious platform to celebrate their achievements. The Diana Award is the highest accolade a young person can receive for their social action or humanitarian efforts. The youth charity, of the same name, benefits from the support of The Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex, is urging communities across the globe to nominate a young person who deserves to be recognised. “COVID-19 has altered the lives of so many. But with great challenges, come opportunities to make change. We need your help to find the next generation of local young heroes changing the world around them.” Tessy Ojo, CBE, CEO of The Diana Award. Recipients of the award have demonstrated their ability to inspire and mobilise their own generation to service their communities through campaigning, volunteering, fundraising, fighting injustice or overcoming extreme life challenges. Alana Habergham-Rice, 12 from Sheffield received the Diana Award in 2020. At the age of six, Alana started baking cakes for Charity. Three years ago, she launched ‘Alana’s Caring Cakes’, baking cakes for people in her community who are experiencing challenges. Baking reduces Alana’s anxiety. This has become more important following her autism diagnosis as she has been able to use her community events to increase awareness and acceptance. Starting with a small stall, Alana now leads an annual charity
event which has raised over £5,000 for various causes, including directly funding treatment for her school-friend with cerebral-palsy and the Sheffield Hospital Charity. Alana has recently become an ambassador for a local autism charity and launched a Kindness Fair, which brings together different charities and young people to celebrate positivity and raise money for local causes. Toni Paxford, 20, from Rotherham received the Diana Award in 2019. Toni has dedicated her time to local, regional and national campaigns including community cohesion, mental health and awareness raising around invisible illnesses. Toni is not afraid to speak up on behalf of those who are unable or not confident enough to share their voice. She is committed to making sure all young people are heard. She is an inspirational young person who has been a positive role model for others for many years. Toni continues to engage new young people in projects, campaigns and activities which benefit other young people. All 2021 Award recipients will also be considered for the biennial Legacy Award later this year, which was set up in the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death to celebrate the achievements of twenty exceptional young changemakers from across the world. Nominations are now open for young people aged 9-25yrs. https://diana-award.org.uk/nominate Deadline for nominations: 12 March 2021
waste site visits
As a result of a number of unfortunate incidents, the Council have issued the following statement in regard to the Household Waste Centres. Urgent plea to Household Waste Recycling Centre visitors to respect staff and stick to the Covid-19 measures in place, for your safety and to prevent further delays and closures at sites. We are incredibly proud that we’ve been able to keep our five Household Waste Recycling Centres open across Sheffield during the Covid-19 pandemic. The hard work and commitment from our workforce during this difficult time has enabled us to do this. Unfortunately, despite working tirelessly to ensure that residents are kept safe when using the sites, there has been a number of recent incidents where people visiting the sites have threatened and verbally abused staff members. Sheffield City Council and Veolia will not tolerate any physical or verbal threats to its workforce, and all such incidents will be reported to the Police. It may result in sites being closed. We are unable to accommodate as many visits as usual because we have to limit the number of people at each site to ensure safe social distancing. Whilst we understand that this may cause some frustration, these measures remain in place to ensure the safety of the public and our workforce. The sites can only remain open if residents fully co-operate and use the sites safely and responsibly. It is critical that the following instructions are adhered to: • Always listen and be courteous to our staff • Do not queue outside the sites as this may cause potential danger for other road users trying to pass. Drivers will initially be asked to move on by the site staff, and failure to do so could result in a £70 fine. • Only one person should visit a site, and you should only bring waste that you can safely carry as no assistance can be provided by site staff.

We would encourage residents with significant volumes of DIY waste and garden waste to consider contacting a registered skip hire company. Residents can arrange for collections to take place from their home for both garden waste and bulky waste. Whilst sites are currently open, the safety of the public and staff is paramount, and if large numbers of people visit the sites or fail to follow the guidelines, they will be forced to close. For up to date information relating to Sheffield’s waste and recycling services, visit: www.sheffield.gov.uk/waste. You can check site queuing times on Twitter @recycle4shef

darren moore in shock switch In a surprise twist on Monday morning Wednesday announced the appointment of Darren Moore as the new first team manager. The highly regarded 46-year-old brings an impressive CV to S6 on both sides of the white line. The defender made 654 senior appearances for a raft of clubs as a player over
two decades, representing Torquay, Doncaster, Bradford, Portsmouth, West Brom, Derby, Barnsley and Burton. He also posted three caps on the international stage for Jamaica. Moore moved into management in April 2018 with the Baggies on a caretaker basis and came close to saving his new charges from Premier League relegation against all the odds having taken the reins 10 points from safety. He earned the Premier League Manager of the Month accolade for April along the way. Moore was appointed permanently in May 2018 with the aim of leading West Brom back to the top tier from the Championship. With that remit on course, he somewhat surprisingly departed the following March with the Baggies in fourth place. The Birmingham product moved to Doncaster in July 2019 and after laying firm foundations at the Keepmoat Stadium saw Rovers’ promotion

ambitions halted by the curtailment of the League One season. Doncaster were six points shy of the play-offs with a game in hand. Moore now joins the Owls with immediate effect and will be in charge for Wednesday night’s Championship clash with Rotherham at Hillsborough. Following the departure of Darren Moore to Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers can confirm that Andy Butler has been put in charge of managing the first team with immediate effect. Chairman David Blunt said: “We are
disappointed that Darren has chosen to leave the club part way through what has been a season full of promise. We have made significant efforts to support Darren over the past 18-months and ensure he was able to build a team capable of challenging in the top six. This has included supporting him through the past two transfer windows despite the difficult financial circumstances. Our ambitions remain to achieve a top six finish and we hope and expect that Andy will use this time to put himself in the prime position to secure the role on a permanent basis at the end of the season. Andy’s first priority will be to halt the team’s recent run of poor form and put our season back on track.” The club have also confirmed that Jamie Smith , Moore’s assistant, has left the club with immediate effect. Meanwhile in what proved to be Moore’s last game in charge, the long trip to Ipswich proved to be a miserable one for Rovers. Goals either side of the break saw Rovers fall to a 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town in Sky Bet League One, and Rovers now find themselves sitting in sixth place, anxiously looking over their shoulder as teams below make a push for the last play-off place. However the two games in hand that rovers enjoy over the teams immediately above them may prove to be crucial in the coming weeks, providing they can convert that advantage into points on the board. Despite Rovers boasting more possession and chances in the first half, they found themselves trailing at half time thanks to Alan Judge’s goal direct from a free kick. Darren Moore’s men came close to equaliser on several occasions before the break with Josh Sims and Taylor Richards both seeing efforts clawed off the line. James Norwood extended Ipswich’s lead early in the second half when he tapped home from close range giving Rovers a huge mountain to climb. A confident Town started shooting from everywhere without troubling Ellery Balcombe. Rovers got one back with 20 minutes to go when substitute Jon Taylor slotted inside the far post, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

blades fall short as liverpool claim points
United battled valiantly, but slipped to defeat against Liverpool at Bramall Lane on Sunday evening. Second-half goals from Curtis Jones and Roberto Firmino were enough for the visitors in a game where United did have chances against Jurgen Klopp’s Reds. Boss Wilder made two changes for the hosting of the Premier League champions. Norwood and McGoldrick returned to the starting XI, with the latter captaining the side, as Sharp dropped to the bench. The first five minutes saw both sides struggling for controlled possession. But United won a freekick in a promising as Phillips fouled McGoldrick. Norwood’s delivery was inviting, but Adrian saved from the stand-in skipper before AlexanderArnold hacked clear. But in the 11th minute, only an excellent save from Ramsdale kept the game goalless. Mane challenged Ampadu and the ball fell kindly for the onrushing Firmino, but United’s number stood tall and denied him, before clawing out Robertson’s cross from underneath the crossbar. The game was open and Adrian was called into action for a second time after McBurnie controlled before McGoldrick’s placed effort was deflected which caused the experienced stopper a moment of concern. Liverpool responded and a quickly taken throw-in on the right created space for Alexander-Arnold to cross to the back post, Jones got in front of Baldock but Ramsdale smothered the danger. As the half hour mark approached, Liverpool sprung forward again, Firmino helped the ball on to Salah, he got the better of Jagielka, but again Ramsdale was there to save. Ampadu then surrendered position in his own area, Alexander-Arnold latched on to it, got past Stevens, only for Ramsdale to tip over at the expense of a corner that came to nothing. The Blades had the ball in the net nine minutes before the break after McBurnie competed with a Kabak who managed to wrong foot Adrian, unfortunately though VAR intervened and McBurnie was adjudged to have been offside. At the other end, Ramsdale continued to deny the visitors, this time saving from Wijnaldum before Firmino squared the rebound and Ampadu cleared and that was the last action of the first period. Liverpool took the lead on 49 minutes, although United can feel aggrieved as the ball appeared to be out of play on the byline before AlexanderArnold cut back for JONES to fire past Ramsdale. Four minutes later, the visitors had the ball in the net again, but this time VAR correctly ruled in United’s favour as Mane was in an offside position as Robertson prodded forward. The Blades responded with a double change, as Osborn and Burke entered the fray, prompting a change of formation in the process, as Jagielka and McGoldrick were withdrawn and within moments of the change, Norwood’s cross to the near post was inviting, but McBurnie headed wide. The Scottish international then got in behind, but his touch allowed Kabak to clear, from the resulting corner, Adrian punched to the edge of the area but Norwood’s low effort went wide. And those missed opportunities to restore parity were punished at the other end on 65 minutes. FIRMINO advanced past two or three challenges before getting a fortunate deflection that cruelly wrongfooted Ramsdale. United were enjoying more possession and territory as Liverpool dropped deeper, but on the break it was Robertson who fired over from Firmino’s pass. With ten minutes remaining, Liverpool again benefited from a break in midfield, Jones advanced but from Robertson’s cross Salah thankfully couldn’t convert at the back post under pressure from Fleck, who was substituted and replaced by Sharp seconds later. As three minutes of added time were signalled, Burke latched on to Amapdu’s ball over the top, got the better of Phillips, only to be denied by Adrian. United battled gamely until the final whistle but unfortunately without any reward.

If ever the football adage of a game of two halves rang true, it was at Kenilworth Road as Luton completed a remarkable comeback to beat Wednesday by the odd goal in five, in what turned out to be Neil Thompson’s last match as caretaker. As much as the Owls ran the show in the opening 45, with the reward a Josh Windass brace, the Hatters promptly turned the tables as goals from Kai Naismith, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Elijah Adebayo concocted what at the interval seemed the most unlikely of wins. Wednesday were left to rue a Hatters turnaround that totally belied the pattern of play before half time. Indeed, the Owls made the ideal start as they put down a marker for a one-sided first half just five minutes in. The pressure was on the hosts from the off and after Izzy Brown fired over the bar, Wednesday struck. Callum Paterson found the time and space down the right to feed Windass, who clipped past Simon Sluga from close range. Kadeem Harris forced Sluga into action at the near post as the Owls stayed in the box seat, causing real concerns in the Luton penalty area from a string of corners. And midway through the first half, Windass might have doubled his tally. Sent scampering in on goal by Matt Penney, the frontman drew Sluga out only to miss the target. The Hatters were pinned in their own half and only a perfectly timed challenge by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall stopped Brown in his tracks as the former Luton loanee was about to pull the trigger. But the overrun hosts were powerless to prevent a second, and what a strike it was on 42 minutes. Harris rolled a low cross across the danger zone and Windass unleashed an unstoppable hit that whistled past Sluga into the top corner. It was as commanding a first half performance as Wednesday have produced all season and the challenge was to successfully protect the advantage after the break. Few saw what was to come. The home side made a triple change to reverse the traffic, which paid immediate dividends as they came out of the traps with zest. And five minutes after the restart, Luton halved the deficit. Dewsbury-Hall swung over a low corner and Naismith deftly finished across Joe Wildsmith. Then, on 58 minutes, the Hatters were right back in it. Adebayo raced down the left flank and pulled back for the advancing Tunnicliffe to slot into the back of the net. Luton had their tails up and the dangerous Adebayo fired into the side netting after some trickery took him into the box on the angle. The Owls were out of their half for the first time on 66 minutes when Paterson stabbed a Barry Bannan cross wide but the pendulum had certainly swung the way of the Hatters. If there was to be a winner, Luton looked the favourites and it duly arrived four minutes from time. Harry Cornick played a deep cross to the back stick, where Adebayo hung high in the air to nod home and deliver the cruellest of blows to Wednesday’s survival hopes.
Rotherham United’s Sky Bet Championship survival hopes were dealt another blow as they fell victim to their fifth successive single goal defeat, this time, at the hands of play-off chasing Reading. At a sun-kissed AESSEAL New York Stadium, the Millers had an early chance when Omar Richards was penalised and Lewis Wing delivered a delicious free-kick into the danger area and Smith got the run on his marker to meet his centre, but he blazed his header over. Just before the quarter hour, Warne was forced into a defensive reshuffle when Robertson was unable to continue, following a hamstring complaint. Warne reverted to a back four with Ben Wiles being asked to ply his trade in the left-back slot. The Millers were visibly unnerved by the disruption but they were the next to threaten when Crooks had a shot blocked en-route to goal before Smith hooked the ball back into the business end and Ladapo rose highest to head goalwards, but his effort looped narrowly over the bar. The home side then had a slight scare when Andy Yiadom over ran the ball and Angus MacDonald smashed an attempted clearance which ricocheted off the Reading man, and the ball fizzed just wide. However, Rotherham failed to heed the warning as Reading opened the scoring with 26 minutes on the clock. Following a spell of Royals pressure, the Millers failed to clear the danger from a corner Morrison was quickest to react, by poking home the rebound. The Millers’ early woes were almost compounded, just minutes later, when Liam Moore sprang the Millers offside trap before playing a slide-rule ball into the path of Joao, who looked certain to steer the ball home from close range, but scuffed the ball wide. In the dying seconds, Rotherham almost found themselves two behind at the interval when Ovie Ejaria planted a low free-kick which Joao side-footed goalwards, and Harding, was on his toes, to turn the ball away from his own-line, but his clearance struck Alfa Semedo, and the ball fortuitously fell wide. With the words of Warne ringing in their ears, Rotherham were quick out of the blocks and Ladapo’s run and shot was deflected high into the air by Semedo, and Smith executed a superb half-volley, from the edge of the box, which flew into the Royals net with venom, but the assistant referee had already raised his flag. Moments later, Giles’ whipped centre was cleared by a retreating visiting defender. Just past the hour mark Warne made a double substitution, as Kieran Sadlier and Trevor Clarke were introduced into the proceedings. In a final throw of the dice, George Hirst and Florian Jozefzoon were thrown on but it was Reading, who threatened next, when Olise fired a left-footed effort which curled away from goal. On a frustrating afternoon for the Millers, Wiles and Olosunde were cautioned before everyone had their heads in their hands, in stoppage time, when Wiles’ goalbound strike was deflected wide by Morrison – with the ball grazing the outside of the post.
