new local committees announced to shape city future Sheffield City Council is to revolutionise how citizens can influence the decisions that matter to communities, committing to a modern way of engaging, empowering and enabling Sheffielders to shape their local areas. In May 2021 the council will transform its approach to the planning and delivery of services, with greater focus, responsiveness, and accountability to the different needs of communities across the city. To enable this, the council will create seven new Local Area Committees covering every part of Sheffield,
and plan to shift power and influence for important local decisions to those Committees over the coming 12 to 18 months. Sheffield communities are all distinct with their own unique networks, community groups, high streets and parks and green open spaces. Our communities play a huge part in everyone’s lives, something that we’ve valued more than ever during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Committees, which go to a Cabinet decision on Wednesday 17th March, will become the platform for communities, public services, community
organisations and the Council to work together to achieve the things that citizens want in their areas, making the most of existing local networks and relationships. Each of the committees will be councillor-led, accountable structures supported by officers for all areas of the city, becoming the key platform for citizens to influence and shape decisions over the most important issues for their area. Councillor Bob Johnson, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a huge step in empowering our communities, providing a platform
for people to talk about the improvements they want to see within their local areas. People have been exploring their communities and connecting more with each other throughout lockdown and I’m sure many will have ideas on things they’d like to enhance and areas in which they’d like to see change – these committees will allow for those voices to be heard. Every person in every community matters and this is an opportunity for us all to come together and shape the future of our communities and our city. We want everyone to get involved and have
a voice in the future of their local area, working on new ideas and having an influence over local issues, in partnership with your neighbours, public services, businesses, and your Elected Councillors. This isn’t about creating a different type of council meeting; it’s about giving communities real power over decisions that directly impact them. This is your opportunity to shape your Sheffield and I’m really excited about the prospects of what we can achieve together.”

grant helps roundabout through pandemic A donation of more than £8,000 from End Youth Homelessness, a national movement of local youth homelessness, has helped South Yorkshire charity Roundabout to continue its vital services through the COVID-19 pandemic. Roundabout supports young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the county. The charity works with more than 250 young people every day, providing shelter, support and life skills to help them gain independence. And despite the difficulties raised by the pandemic and a sharp fall in revenue as a calendar of major fundraising events was cancelled, Roundabout has continued to provide the majority of its services and provide active support for the region’s most vulnerable young people. Among the young people supported by Roundabout - thanks to the funding from End Youth Homelessness - is Amy, who came to the charity after sleeping in a Sheffield shop doorway and then in a dangerous squat. But all that changed when the Roundabout Rapid Rehousing team stepped in and worked with the local authority at the height of the lockdown to provide Amy with her first permanent home. “The
life I had wasn’t a life to be living but it was the only life I had and there didn’t seem to be any way out,” Amy says. “I’d got to the stage when I knew I wanted to have a normal life and then I was told that Roundabout was for people my age and that they could help me so I went to them and they’ve been more supportive than my family ever were. In fact, I’d probably still be in that squat if it hadn’t been for Roundabout because they’ve helped me with things like arranging benefits and getting a GP, which has really helped with my mental health issues. And the best thing is that I’m getting the key to my own flat, somewhere that will be all mine. Everybody at Roundabout has been so supportive, they help you and understand you and work with you.” Working within current government guidelines, Roundabout has kept its residential projects open and running at capacity, while striving at all times to keep both service users and staff safe. “These are some of the most vulnerable young people we work with, many with high levels of anxiety and our continued support is a lifeline to them,” says Roundabout Chief Executive Ben Keegan. “We have a duty of care to
our young people and staff, so are communicating with young people who live in their own tenancies by telephone, email, and video links where possible. We’re checking on their physical and mental health, offering advice on daily issues and anxieties and ensuring they take all reasonable precautions to protect themselves and their families. Roundabout staff have also been delivering food parcels safely to those young people who are in desperate need and the charity’s maintenance team are available to carry out emergency repairs. Another important link has been the Roundabout freephone telephone number and live chat feature on the charity’s website. “We want to make sure that young people and their families have a chance to talk to someone when they need to because this intervention at an early stage can have a massive impact and we have been keen to maintain this support, all be it in a different format,” says Ben. If you know someone who needs help or support, visit www.roundabouthomeless.org for more information.

I used to think I was indecisive, now I’m not so sure. I went to the doctor yesterday and he says I’m paranoid. Who else has he told? My flat-earther friend decided to walk to the end of the world to prove it is flat. In the end, he came around. I’m annoyed because I had to work at the museum tonight moving suits of armour. sheffield’ reputation as tree-friendly family business offers complete city receives big cash boost Sheffield is to receive a cash boost to enhance its reputation as one of the greenest, tree-friendly cities in the UK. The £200,000 cash boost will enable its “Treevitalise” project to plant more trees across the city- and engage citizens in the planting, care and appreciation of their trees, woods and greenspaces. The money is being delivered from the Woodland Trust’s new pilot Emergency Tree Fund to enable local authorities to break through barriers and get more trees in the ground. Sheffield’s bid is backed by funding from Woodland Trust corporate partner IKEA which is keen to get involved as the project develops. The news comes just three years after charities and campaigners were in a battle to save some of Sheffield’s street trees being removed and replaced as part of the council’s Streets Ahead Highways Maintenance contract. Joseph Coles, Urban Programme Lead at the Woodland Trust said: “Sheffield has always been blessed with trees, whether it be woodlands or majestic street trees. Three years’ ago our involvement in Sheffield was purely focused on trying everything we could to put a stop to street tree felling. But since then, things have changed dramatically. There’s a new partnership of stakeholders - including the Woodland Trust, who are striving to repair the damage through genuine collaboration. That we now have the confidence to honour our promise to support the council, is testament to their hard work and commitment. It’s fantastic that today we can provide Sheffield with the money to bring a lasting legacy for trees and people in the city.” Liz Ballard, CEO Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust, and Chair of the Sheffield Street Trees Partnership said: “We’ve come a long way with the development of a partnership Street Tree Strategy. It’s good to see that all our hard work has built confidence to invest in new trees and woodland , with all the added benefits they will bring to the people and wildlife of this wonderful city” Catherine Nuttgens, Community Forestry Manager at Sheffield City Council said: “The trees and woodlands of Sheffield fuelled the creation of the city we live in and continue to shape its character to this day. As a result, most people in Sheffield live within walking distance of
woodland, and many have enjoyed the proximity to these wonderful places during lockdown. The Community Forestry team have worked for over 15 years in the city to help continue this rich woodland heritage, enabling communities to plant and celebrate trees. The Treevitalise project will revitalise Community Forestry and help us understand our urban forest better whilst accelerating our ambition to grow it further. The project will also help us to create community orchards, run sessions with schools and hold public events to celebrate trees. Trees bring many benefits to communities, and when the public are involved in their care, the trees benefit too.” In total, £2.9 million will going to councils across the country. It is a key part of the charity’s recently announced ambitious aim to plant 50 million trees by 2025. John Tucker, the Woodland Trust’s Director of Woodland Outreach at the Trust said: “The Trust’s Emergency Tree Fund has the power to inspire tree planting and woodland creation and galvanise the need to treasure trees and green spaces in neighbourhoods across the UK. What the country’s fight against covid has shown is how communities have come together in a time of crisis. As the pandemic hopefully abates, getting outside and planting, maintaining and enjoying trees will be a way for this spirit to be harnessed once again in a different but a very important way - to tackle the climate and nature crises which also affects us all.” Among the aims of the Emergency Tree Fund are to boost green spaces and therefore health, plant trees to soak up harmful carbon, combat pollution and create detailed strategies to meet carbon zero targets. Bolsover Council is another which will benefit from the funding, receiving just over £280,000. It is looking to engage the public in creating a series of community forests, including on a former colliery site. Meanwhile Wolverhampton is looking to plant pockets of trees in a range of locations across the city. To achieve its 50 million tree aim the Trust is aiming to create new woods as well as work with the likes of landowners, the Government, businesses and the public. Its Emergency Tree Fund may be expanded should this prove a success.
webshop launched by cathedral’s 1554 cafe
You are always certain of a warm welcome at the award winning 1554 Coffee and Gift Shop. That’s why being closed for nearly 12 months has been particularly tough on this social enterprise which operates from within Sheffield Cathedral, one of the city’s favourite landmarks. “It’s ironic and very sad at the same time” said Ruth Maher, Enterprise Business Manager at Sheffield Cathedral. “Last year we won an award which recognised our commitment to excellent customer service and then we ended up being closed! We’ve had to say goodbye to several valued staff and volunteers.” The impact of Covid-19 has been devasting on 1554 and put the future of the coffee and gift shop in real doubt. The hope is a new web shop will generate vitally needed income and help to the keep this popular coffee and gift shop going. “It’s definitely been a struggle” Ruth
added. “We’re like a big family. We rely on our customers and our customers rely on us. We miss everybody so much. A few have been in contact to say they’re crossing the days off on their calendar until we re-open!” The new web shop has been made possible through a business support grant from Sheffield City Region. The funding was aimed at helping small and medium sized enterprises recover from Covid-19 and build their business up again. “It’s was all new to me. It’s definitely been a challenge, but the end product is well worth it. I hope everyone likes it and it brings new customers in to see us” added Ruth. The coffee and gift shop is also known for supporting local business through championing Yorkshire’s suppliers, producers and creative industries and has teamed up with Heavenly Coffee to offer the Heavenly at Home range of coffee, teas and biscuits.

promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years ofservice I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is John Walton, who has been with the company for over 20 years and Sharon Clayton who joined in July 2017, while Beverley Travis and Vera Gregory look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.
