Covid-19 grants extended for Sheffield businesses Grants for Sheffield-based businesses closed under the national restrictions have been extended to 31st March to support them through lockdown. The extension will be applied automatically so businesses who have previously been receiving lockdown grants do not need to reapply for this. The Government has stated that most businesses will remain closed until 12th April at the earliest, so a range of financial support continues to be available for those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes: Lockdown Support Grants Available to both ratepaying and non-ratepaying businesses who have been forced to close in local

restrictions (T2/T3) or national lockdown since 14th October 2020. Supply Chain Business Support grant A grant for businesses based in Sheffield who supply hospitality, accommodation, leisure and entertainment sectors with goods or services. Essential Open Business Support Grant Support for businesses with fixed costs that have been allowed to stay open under the most recent lockdown that started on 5th January 2021. The primary activity of the business must be the sale of goods and services on a face-to-face basis.

Self Employed and Small Business Grants These grants are available to businesses who have low fixed property costs of £1500 or less, or those with no fixed property costs, such as self-employed businesses who are home-based. They must operate in, or supply to, a sector forced to close since 14 Oct 2020. All eligible businesses who haven’t previously received grants are encouraged to apply for the grants relevant to them by 31st March to ensure they receive the maximum amount of funding available. More information on the grants and the online application forms can be found on the Sheffield City Council website, here.

The Government confirmed in its Spring Budget that ‘Restart Grants’ will be made available to businesses who have been forced to close in lockdown, to assist them in reopening in the coming months. Grants of up to £6,000 per premises will be available for non-essential retail businesses and up to £18,000 per premises for hospitality, accommodation, leisure, personal care and gym businesses. The grants will give businesses the cash certainty they need to plan ahead and safely relaunch and we will be making these payments to eligible businesses as soon as possible. As well as business grant funding, The Council also

offers a wide range of free business workshops and training sessions to support both established businesses and start-ups, including topics such as how to maximise social media during lockdown.

Sagars using the 365 insulation system have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into rooms that can be used for any purpose, all year round. Vat is charged at 5% as this type of insulation comes under the governments energy savings rate. The cost of a 365 system is far less than you might think with a 3 metre by 3 metre conservatory typically costing around £1699 including vat, fitting and comes with a ten year guarantee. I went to the zoo yesterday and saw a baguette in a cage. The zoo keeper told me it was bread in captivity. As a kid I was made to walk the plank. We couldn’t afford a dog. I went into a library and asked if they had any books about paranoia. The librarian said “They’re right behind you!”

I need to re-home a dog. It’s a small terrier, and tends to bark a lot. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll jump over next door’s fence and get it for you. The inventor of the throat lozenges has died today. They’ll be no coffin at his funeral. Have you been hit with a rhythm stick? You may be entitled to personal Ian Dury compensation.

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice smokers urged to zero carbon summit for city quit for mental to be held online health impact COVID-19 has seriously impacted mental health with the number of people experiencing clinically significant depression and anxiety reaching 52% during the last lockdown (three times more than the pre COVID-19 average of 17%.) Research shows that quitting smoking is associated with reduced depression, anxiety, and stress and improved mood and quality of life. Quitting is even more effective than antidepressants in improving mood disorders, but long-held misconceptions around the positive impact of smoking on mental health continue to hold some smokers back from quitting. Over 1 million smokers have quit since the pandemic hit the country. However, for those smokers who haven’t quit, smoking behaviours appear to have become more entrenched to the detriment of their physical and mental health. Analysis based on GP Patient Survey data showed that smokers with mental health problems are less likely to quit as a result of COVID and more likely to be smoking more than they did before the pandemic. In light of this, Smokefree Sheffield is encouraging smokers to quit for their mental health. Cllr Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure said, “The coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on all of our daily lives. In these difficult and changing times, looking after our mental health and wellbeing is more important than ever. We’re hearing from smokers who want to quit but feel it’s just too stressful right now. We want to reassure people that quitting smoking is one of the best things they can do for their mental health and there’s support available to anyone who needs it.” Sheridan, an Ex-Smoker commented, “Once I pinpointed that stress was my trigger I knew I needed to think about what else I could do differently to manage that stress. Little things like how now I make a point of changing my toenail colour every week because that’s me taking 10 minutes to myself to relax. It sets a good example for my daughter too. Teaching her more positive ways to take time for herself and de-stress.” Meanwhile Greg Fell, of Public Health Sheffield said, “There are lots of misconceptions about the link between smoking and mental health. Many people turn to cigarettes when they are anxious or stressed in the belief that it calms them down or helps them relax. However, the opposite is true. With No Smoking Day just around the corner, I really want to urge smokers in Sheffield, particularly those who are struggling with their mental health, to reach out to the team at Smokefree Sheffield and get some support to quit.”

Sheffield City Council is holding its first Zero Carbon Sheffield Summit on 19 March where it will release the Pathways to Zero report - the city’s response to the climate crisis. The summit will be online, open to the public and feature talks from the lead author, sustainability expert Andy Sheppard of Arup, Chief Executive of Community Energy England Emma Bridge and Sheffield City Council’s new Chief Executive Kate Josephs. In 2019 Sheffield City Council announced its ambition to become a zero carbon city by 2030 and that goal remains, but the Pathways to Zero report shows just how significant the challenges are and highlights the desperate need for the entire city, and the country, to work together harder than ever before to reduce emissions. The report shows the challenges of reaching even an 85% reduction by 2030 and highlights important steps people across the city can take, including switching from fossil fuels to zero carbon alternatives and changing to healthier lifestyles. The biggest reductions can be made by switching away from petrol or diesel cars, replacing gas boilers with efficient heat pumps, and investing in buildings to save energy by reducing wasteful heat loss. Changing how we travel, and what we buy and throw away, and how we do business will also play an important part. The report shows how changes we need to make can have benefits for people’s lives and increase jobs. Reduced air pollution, healthier and more comfortable homes, and skilled job opportunities for local people are just some of the benefits to addressing the climate crisis in Sheffield. The authority remains ambitious and is calling for a citywide commitment from every individual, business and organisation. Councillor Mark Jones, Cabinet Member for Environment, Streetscene and Climate Change, said: “We knew that zero carbon was an ambitious commitment and would be a challenge, but these reports give us a clear, evidenced-based route we can take to reduce emissions. We remain ambitious and will continue striving towards our target. We are constantly working towards this, recent progress includes our plans for a greener vehicle fleet and installation of new electric charge points and we continue to prioritise sustainability across projects and policies. We can lead the way, but we can’t do it alone, we need everyone, as well as the Government to recognise their responsibility in this so that we can all look forward to a cleaner greener future. This summit is the start of a zero carbon conversation with the city and will help us put a plan in action to tackle the climate crisis.”

Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like, and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “ With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later

promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years ofservice I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is John Walton, who has been with the company for over 20 years and Sharon Clayton who joined in July 2017, while Beverley Travis and Vera Gregory look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

BLADES OUTFOXED AT THE KING POWER Paul Heckingbottom’s first game leading the Blades ended with a heavy defeat against Leicester City. United were competitive in the opening 45 minutes but fell behind to a Kelechi Iheanacho goal, but in the second period City were ruthless and punished the visitors at the King Power Stadium. Iheanacho completed his hat-trick, Ayoze Perez also got on the scoresheet and Ethan Ampadu cruelly put through his own net late on. There were three changes for the clash against the Foxes. Basham returned from injury, whilst Sharp and Burke replaced Brewster and the injured McGoldrick. Typically, Vardy lined up in attack for the home side. It was a very quiet opening 10 minutes or so, but after Vardy dragged an effort wide, Perez got across his marker and glanced a header towards goal, but Ramsdale was alert and got a vital touch to tip the ball on to the post and behind. Bryan then hesitated when on the retreat and Vardy stole to the ball but again Ramsdale denied him. Leicester understandably were enjoying more of the ball, but United were in a good shape and defending well when called into action as the clock ticked past the half hour. City broke at pace and the counter ended with Tielemans having an effort deflected behind off Ampadu, the corner was a poor one and comfortably cleared. But six minutes before half-time, the hosts hit the front. Some neat build-up play ended with Vardy getting in behind Basham and his low ball cut out Bryan allowing IHEANACHO the easiest of tasks to tap home from a couple of yards out. Within the opening minutes of the second-half, Leicester broke in numbers but as Vardy went to shoot, Bryan put his body on the line and made a crucial block tackle. Less than 60 seconds later, Basham made an even more timely block, heading off the line to deny the former England international a certain second as he took aim from close-range. As the clocked ticked to the hour mark, Vardy found space in the area from Iheanacho’s pass, but not for the first time, Ramsdale stood tall and made another good save. The first change for the Blades, saw Mousset replace Burke in attack, but as play resumed with a United free-kick, Leicester seized on possession on the halfway line which ended with PEREZ controlling before firing into the bottom corner. On 69 minutes, things went from bad to worse for the visitors. Leicester won possession again, Vardy burst down the left and his inch perfect low pass across the retreating Blades

defence found the run of IHEANACHO and he side footed past Ramsdale, giving him no chance. Bryan was booked for a tug back on the Nigerian international, but Ramsdale was confident enough to come and collect the subsequent free kick. With the clock ticking down, Leicester added a fourth and fifth within two minutes. Firstly, IHEANACHO was afforded too much space and fired into the bottom corner from distance, before Vardy got into the Blades box again and his drilled effort deflected off AMAPDU and into the net after Ramsdale had come to his near post to narrow the angle. City weren’t content with five though and continued to relentlessly push the Blades back. Iheanacho skied an effort when it looked easier to score, before Ramsdale threw himself at the feet of the same player after Vardy had got the better of Ampadu and thankfully that was the last action of note.

The Owls stay rooted in relegation danger following the 2-1 defeat to leaders Norwich but Darren Moore is steadfast in the belief that positivity must remain. Wednesday turned in an impressive first half performance against the in-form Canaries only to be undone after the break as Norwich showed their promotion credentials. Moore said: “We have to keep believing, we really do, there is no other way. I have just said to the players now, you’ve gone head to head with the best team in the division and you’ve

been beaten by fine margins. “But it’s those fine margins that count at this level and they have scored two world class goals today. “I don’t recall them troubling our defence too much but I do recall two fantastic finishes and that was the difference. “But we have double figure games to go, we have a lot to play for and that belief must be there. We have to look forward, we have a huge game on Wednesday night against Huddersfield and that’s where our focus must be.”

Community Foundation Impact Report 2019/20

Sheffield United Community Foundation have released our Impact Report for 2019/2020. The report highlights the delivery across our Education & Training, Health & Wellbeing, National Citizen Service and Participation & Inclusion strands. This year has been a very challenging one, and one that has been difficult for all of our staff members and participants. Chris Bailey, Head of Foundation, said: “At the end of what has been a very testing period for us all, I am delighted to share our Impact Report for the 2019-20 delivery year with you. You will see, that despite the challenges faced, the Foundation, and our people, worked extremely hard to ensure we continued to support the Sheffield community through difficult times. “As a charity of the city, with people at the heart of our organisation, we remain committed to our vision of helping to make Sheffield “a healthy, empowered and inclusive community” Chris Bailey Head of Foundation “As a charity of the city, with people at the heart of our organisation, we remain committed to our vision of helping to make Sheffield “a healthy, empowered and inclusive community” and continue to diversify our activities to tackle local, national and global challenges. “Working with people is very inspiring, and this report highlights some of the powerful stories that focus on the positive changes people have made to their lives and their achievements as a result of being part of the Foundation family in such an uncertain year. “I wish to offer my heartfelt thanks to our Trustee board, our passionate and devoted staff team and to all of you who engaged with us throughout the year. Whether you participated face to face, socially distanced, online, or a mixture, we are truly grateful for your engagement, and hope that you continue to enjoy opportunities with the Foundation moving forward. “Of course, our work would not be possible without the ongoing support of Sheffield United Football Club and our local and national partners. These relationships helped us to navigate the uncertainty that 2019-2020 provided and enabled us to create a tremendous amount of positive impact in our communities and for that, we are very grateful. “I am extremely proud of our Foundation, our club, and our city. It is important, now more than ever, that we continue to work together to provide supportive and meaningful opportunities for the people of Sheffield.” Please read our impact report by visiting https://www. sufc-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/ Impact-Report-1920.pdf For any further information or to find out how you or your organisation can support the charitable arm of Sheffield United Football Club, please contact enquiries@sufc-community.co.uk.

Draw a fair result for Butler Andy Butler felt his side needed more urgency after being held to a goalless draw against Northampton Town. Limited chances came for either side during the 90 minutes with the majority of possession inbetween the penalty areas. Butler said: “Being totally honest I thought the game was disappointing as we lacked urgency and tempo. They came and set their stall out for a 0-0 or to try and nick something from a set piece or break so we had to be switched on. “We allowed them to get their shape and dictate the tempo. Usually we are a free-flowing side and they came with a game plan to stifle that and they did.

Wright pleased for Jones Joe Wright says he was pleased for Louis Jones to keep his first EFL clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against Northampton. Wright was part of a back-line which produced a solid display at the Keepmoat Stadium, and believes Jones’ recent performances have been impressive. “It’s great for Louis to get a clean sheet and he’s been really good since coming in behind myself and Tom. “I’ve known him for a long time and he’s trained with us every day, having that understanding has helped him now he’s in the team. “The past couple of seasons his game has come on massively, he’s worked hard off the field and he’s developed really well.” With injuries starting to have an effect within the

“We were a long way from our own standards today. There is room for improvement and because we’re sat here disappointed with a point it shows how far we’ve come. The manager was pleased to see Louis Jones keep his first clean sheet in the EFL after a composed display. Butler added: “On a positive we got a clean sheet which shows the defenders did their jobs from set plays and open play. Off the ball our work was good. “As a team we defended well. We attack together and defend together. Louis and his back four deserve credit but as do the whole team.”

squad, Wright is working hard to maintain his own fitness at a busy stage of the season. He added: “We’ve been unfortunate with injuries in the past couple of weeks and it’s about everyone stepping up now. “It’s a season like no other and we’re doing more recovery to make sure we all stay fit for every fixture. “I’ve had my own injuries over the years and I know how frustrating it is to be out so I have invested a lot in getting my body right.”
