LOCKDOWN MEASURES START TO EASE ECO SOFAS The Government’s roadmap out of lockdown has moved on this week as we start to slowly ease the country out of Covid restrictions. From Monday just gone (29th) outdoor gatherings (including in private gardens) of either 6 people (the Rule of 6) or 2 households are now allowed, making it easier for friends and families to meet outside. Outdoor sports facilities such as tennis and basketball courts, and open-air swimming pools, have been allowed to reopen, and people will be able to take part in formally organised outdoor sports. In terms of travel the ‘stay at
home’ rule ended on Monday too but many restrictions will remain in place. People should continue to work from home where they can and minimise the number of journeys they make where possible, avoiding travel at the busiest times and on busy routes. Travel abroad has continued to be prohibited, other than for a small number of permitted reasons. Holidays abroad are not allowed, given it will remain important to manage the risk of imported variants and protect the vaccination programme. The government has launched a new taskforce to review global travel which
will report on 12 April. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health Sheffield, speaking last week said: “This is a ‘take it slowly’ and careful approach out of lockdown and it’s what we need to make sure this lockdown is the last. We’re working with our schools to make sure they have the right measures in place to keep our children safe, as many of us as possible are working from home and we’ve all been playing our part across the city by staying at home as much as we can. “The changes on Monday gives us more opportunity to be together which is so welcomed. That said, the
numbers in Sheffield are starting to rise very slowly, in the main because our schools are open again and because we are doing so much more testing, so it feels right that we don’t do too much too soon to undo all of the hard work people have put into moving us towards the end of lockdown. “It’s important for me to remind all parents that if you or your child has symptoms, get tested and self-isolate until you get your result. If your child has symptoms, please don’t send them to school. This will stop the spread. “While vaccination coverage is high and there are signs
this is beginning to reduce hospitalisation in the elderly, there are still many younger adults who are harmed by Covid. We must carry on with ‘hands, face, space’ and letting fresh air in when indoors. If you are offered a vaccine, take up the offer and get vaccinated to protect yourself and those around you. The vaccine is safe and we have loads of resource available on our Youtube channel to answer any of your Covid and vaccine concerns.” You can read full information on the Government’s roadmap and lockdown restrictions at www.gov.uk

take the challenge! Sheffield Hallam University students studying International Events Management are organising a charity fundraiser and event for Cavendish Cancer Care as part of their final year events module. What was originally supposed to be an in-person event has been cancelled due to COVID19 and they have created a virtual fundraising campaign and event and which has already managed to raise £5000. They have set up Challenge 7 - people
set themselves a challenge associated with the number 7 (based on the 7 hills in Sheffield) and ask for sponsorship from family & friends. There have been many positive responses from participants saying that its really raised their spirits during lockdown and created a sense of community in Sheffield. Their story: Inspired by the 7 hills of Sheffield where Cavendish Cancer Care is based, your mission is to set yourself a challenge
which incorporates the number 7. You could run 7km for 7 days, cycle 70km, or sit in an ice bath for 7 minutes or just bake 7 cakes and sell them at anytime between 7th March and 7th April ! Whatever your idea (but the crazier the better!), we’re sure all your friends and family will get behind you, and help raise funds to support Cavendish Cancer Care. So, what will your challenge 7 be ? We would encourage for all participants to set themselves a
minimum target of £70 - however the more you can raise, the better! (the harder the challenge you set, the more likely you are to smash your target!). We’ll also be having a party at the end to celebrate all your success and they’ll be a few prizes too! £70 will make a difference to someone living with cancer by covering the costs of providing time and space to comes to terms with the effect cancer is having on them or their loved ones. Whether this be by proving therapy sessions to a cancer patient to ease the pain
of cancer treatment, specialist support to a child who doesn’t know how to express their emotions because their parent has cancer, or giving a someone caring for a loved one an unemotional ear to express their fears without fear of upsetting anyone.
Whatever you raise will provide personalised package of care at a time they need it the most. Full details of the challenge can be found at www.justgiving.com/ campaign/Challenge7

I just came home from work when my wife ran towards me and tore off all her clothes. At that point, my wife flashed before my eyes. Arguing with my wife is like reading a online terms and conditions? In the end I ignore it all and click “I agree.” At the Olympics I saw an athlete carrying a long stick and asked him: “Are you a pole vaulter?” He replied: “No I’m German but how do you know my name is Walter?” My friend keeps saying cheer up it could be worse you could be in a hole in the ground full of water. iconic sheffield building to be transformed historic friendly Age UK Sheffield has announced that Heritage Fund to begin turning this plan society plans for they have received formal permission into a reality. The project is going to have from the National Lottery Heritage Fund such a positive impact on the community re-start of meetings to start the redevelopment of the Old and provide some amazing opportunities Coach House in Hillsborough Park, after signing the lease with Sheffield City Council. This is a big step forward for the project which will see the local charity convert the grade II listed building into a cafe and community hub that will provide activities and events for the community. The lease that was officially signed on March 1st includes a long term lease for both the Old Coach House building and the Potting Shed that sits to the side of the Walled Garden. Once converted, the Potting Shed will be used to provide dementia friendly activities from crafting and woodwork to gardening and sewing. Age UK Sheffield are hoping that the restoration and building work will begin in April. Steve Chu, Age UK Sheffield CEO, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the lease has been signed and we have been given the go ahead from the National Lottery
for older people across Sheffield to engage in inclusive and exciting activities and events, which will have a real positive impact on reducing the loneliness and isolation faced by so many.” Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “Hillsborough Park is already one of Sheffield’s most popular parks, but this development will really take it to the next level. As well as the important benefits the scheme will bring to those living with dementia, it will also provide brand new café and toilet facilities to all visitors, and will preserve the wonderful heritage of the Old Coach House building. With developments also progressing for our All Wheeled Bike track, Hillsborough Park is set to be a real leisure destination, serving many communities and improving the lives of local people. I can’t wait to see it take shape later this year.”
have you completed your 2021 census? Census day was 21st March, but it is vital those who have not yet completed, do so as soon as possible. Sunday March 21 marked the day that millions of people across England and Wales completed key questions about themselves and their households to ensure local services in every community are informed by the best information possible. However, for those who have not yet submitted their online or paper questionnaires or have maybe misplaced their invitation letter, there is lots of help available. “The information you provide needs to be about who usually lives in your household on Census Day, which was Sunday March 21, however if you’ve haven’t completed it yet, please do so – there’s still time to,” the Office for National Statistics’ deputy national statistician Iain Bell said. “Every household should have received their letter inviting them to take part and we’ve had a great response so far. If you haven’t, or you have misplaced your letter, you can head online to www.census.gov.uk and request a new unique access code. There is plenty of help available, including face-to-face assistance at local Census Support Centres. Field officers will soon start calling at households who have not completed their census. They will follow social distancing
and COVID-safe guidelines, supporting people to take part. They will be equipped with PPE and will never need to enter anyone’s home. They’ll be operating much like a postal or food delivery visit.” The results from the census will shed light on the needs of different groups and communities, and the inequalities people are experiencing, ensuring the big decisions facing the country following the pandemic and EU exit are based on the best information possible, through the anonymised answers provided. The ONS will never share personal details and no-one, including government bodies, will be able to identify you in census statistics. Personal census records will be kept secure for 100 years, and only then can future generations view it. If people do not complete their census, they may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000. For more information, including how to find a local census support centre, please visit www.census.gov.uk.
Established in 1810, the Oddfellows is one of the largest and oldest friendly societies in the UK, with 404,000 members across 115 Branches nationwide. They are a non-profit mutual run by members for members, and do their best to improve the quality of people’s lives through friendship, care and charity. Below is a recent press release outlining their plans to once more help people in South Yrokshire meet in a friendly, helpful atmosphere. “Off the back of the government’s recent roadmap announcement, we’re putting plans in place to re-start our face-to-face social events. While many of our group’s members can’t wait to get out again and re-connect, there are some who feel that their confidence and mental health have been knocked for six this past year. We’ve been in regular touch with our 700 local members throughout the pandemic. Sadly, some have lost someone close, and the majority have felt the daily struggle of staying at home to keep themselves and others safe. As social restrictions ease and we’ve got routes back to a more normal way of life, we know that many people’s normal will be very different to the one they once knew. So much time has passed and we appreciate that it might feel incredibly daunting to step out and socialise again. We’re going to be there for all our members to help them re-adjust at their own pace. But if anyone else feels that they too are in need of some gentle, friendly support or encouragement, then we’ve always room for more within our friendship group. We’ll be looking to safely restart our outdoor events from mid-April earliest and indoor ones from mid-May. We’ve also lots

BLADES U23s DOMINANT IN SHEFFIELD DERBY United’s Under 23s ran out dominant winners in the Steel City derby, scoring four goals in a convincing performance against Sheffield Wednesday at Middlewood Road. The Blades didn’t start the game on the front foot but didn’t give up too many chances as they played their way into the game, and after finding the breakthrough halfway through the first half, Darren Currie and Graham Coughlan’s side never looked back. It was right wing back Femi Seriki who got the opener. After staying forward from an earlier attack, Seriki was first onto Zak Brunt’s pin-point cross after a lengthy passing move from the Blades. United were on top for the rest of the half but could only create half chances in search of a second, with Andre Brooks and Sam Graham both going close. It was more of the same after the break but United did have Jordan Amissah to thank for a superb save to tip a powerful effort just past the post. It proved decisive four minutes later when Brooks broke down the left and found Iliman Ndiaye who cut inside to fire home the crucial second into the bottom corner. Ten minutes later it was game over thanks to Ndiaye’s second. A brilliant give and go with strike partner Lys Mousset, the forward backheeling the ball through the Owls defence for Ndiaye who slotted home the third. It was a comfortable afternoon from there on and the hosts were reduced to ten men when Izzy Brown received a straight red for an off the ball incident. Max Lowe put the icing on the cake with a deserved fourth in stoppage time, running onto a pull back from Brooks with what was the last action of the match. Blades: Amissah, Seriki, Lowe, Gordon, Graham, Gomis, Brooks, Neal, Mousset, Ndiaye, Brunt. Unused: Dewhurst, Ayari, Gaxha, Maguire, Grant.
Jordan Rhodes named owls Player of the Month Jordan Rhodes has been voted as the swfc.co.uk March Player of the Month. Supporters have been voting over the weekend via our official website and it’s a landslide win for the in-form striker, who has come out on top with 80% of the vote. The 31-year-old scored three goals from his five appearances this month. After hitting the back of the net against his former loan side Norwich, Rhodes hit the headlines for his double against Barnsley at Oakwell last time out that earned us a priceless victory heading into the international break. His performances and form in front of goal have seen Rhodes scoop the monthly gong, with Osaze Urhoghide and Joey Pelupessy finishing second and third, respectively. As always, we thank everyone who took part in the vote. Well deserved, Jordan!

RIP Derek Hawksworth
Sheffield United is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Derek Hawksworth. Bradford-born Derek signed for the Blades from the Bantams in December 1950 and went on to make 286 appearances for the Blades, scoring 103 goals as well as playing a major part in securing the League Division Two Championship title at the end of the 1952/53 season. New dates agreed for Coventry and Birmingham fixtures as Millers prepare for busy run-in Rotherham United have agreed new dates with Coventry City and Birmingham City for their Sky Bet Championship visits to AESSEAL New York Stadium which will form part of the busy 2020/21 season run-in and make up four games in a week for Paul Warne’s men. The originally scheduled date for the fixture against the Sky Blues fell foul to the outbreak of Covid-19 within the Millers ranks, while the clash against Birmingham City will move from Saturday to Sunday to accommodate what will become a week made up of four second tier fixtures for Rotherham United. With an already hectic calendar meaning that the Millers were limited to when they could reschedule the game against Mark Robins’ side, they will now

as two of the most dangerous pairs of wingers in United history, although, over the course of his time with the Club, Derek played in all of the forward positions, although his favoured role was on the left. He was selected for the FA against the army in November 1951 and also was selected for England B, playing against France in May 1952. He eventually left for Huddersfield Town in 1958 and followed with spells at Lincoln City and finally Bradford again before retiring from the game. He was a fine servant to the Club and a great ambassador for the game of football in general. Andy Butler felt his side were missing an attacking edge in the defeat to MK Dons in Sky Bet League One. Daniel Harvie’s second-half goal sealed all three points for the home side at Stadium MK, and Butler was disappointed to take nothing from the game. He said: “We had a game plan to nullify MK Dons and it worked to an extent but I thought we lacked any
real threat in the final third. “It’s something we’ll address and I think they probably feel the pressure to make something happen rather than doing what comes naturally. “Results haven’t gone well over the past 12 games but it’s still the same players that got us into a good position before that.” With another few days before Rovers’ next game against Charlton, Butler says he will work with his team on improving the smaller details. He added: “We’ve got another few days of preparation before the Charlton game, and we’ll use that to focus on getting the fine margins right. “I’ve got more than enough confidence in this team that they will find a way through this tough spell because they are all very good players.”
