£4.3 million grants for local venues ECO SOFAS The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport has today (2 April 2021) announced that more than 2,700 cultural and creative organisations are to receive a share of £400 million as part of a vital financial boost from the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund – which has been awarded through Arts Council England, Historic England, National Lottery Heritage Fund and the British Film Institute.

They have invested £4,317,677 in arts and cultural organisations across South Yorkshire through the second round

of their Culture Recovery Fund distributed by Arts Council England. Some of the organisations to have received funding in South Yorkshire are: Underneath the Stars Festival Doncaster Creates Sheffield Theatre Trust Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair, Arts Council England, said: “Investing in a thriving cultural sector at the heart of communities is a vital part of helping the whole country to recover from the pandemic. These grants will help to re-open theatres, concert halls, and museums and will give artists and companies

the opportunity to begin making new work. We are grateful to the Government for this support and for recognising the paramount importance of culture to our sense of belonging and identity as individuals and as a society.” The first round of grants and repayable finance totalling more than £800 million were allocated to ensure the immediate survival of 3,800 cultural organisations and heritage sites across the country. This second tranche of funding builds on the lifeline grants already awarded to support museums, theatres, performance

venues, historic sites and cinemas as they reopen to audiences and visitors throughout the spring and summer. Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, said: “Our record breaking Culture Recovery Fund has already helped thousands of culture and heritage organisations across the country survive the biggest crisis they’ve ever faced.

Now we’re staying by their side as they prepare to welcome the public back through their doors - helping our cultural gems plan for reopening and thrive in the better times ahead.” Nearly all of the original £1.57 billion

Culture Recovery Fund has now been allocated, with over £1.2 billion in grants and repayable finance offered to more than 5,000 individual organisations and sites, and further grants to be finalised over the coming weeks. £188 million has been given to the devolved administrations through the Barnett formula, with Northern Ireland receiving £33 million, Scotland £97 million and Wales £59 million. £100 million has been given to national cultural institutions in England and the English Heritage Trust.

Four charities directly supporting the Sheffield community have been awarded a cash donation as part of Jack’s supermarket’s Support Scheme. All four charities will receive £500 each to help fund their ongoing work within the community. Jack’s Supermarket, on Kilner Way, part of the Tesco family, launched its Jack’s Supports scheme to donate proceeds from the sale of carrier bags to local good causes.

Usually, the four charities selected would each receive £250, and voting units would be placed in store where shoppers

could nominate one charity to receive an extra donation. However, as voting in store has closed due to social distancing measures, each selected charity will instead receive an increased donation of £500 to help those whose usual fundraising efforts may have been impacted by the pandemic.

The four winning charities are: South Yorkshire County Scout Council, a local organisation providing young people with opportunities to participate in residential activities and outdoor adventure activities.

14th Sheffield (Grenoside) Scouts, a local Scout group developing local young people to be the best they can be.

Chapeltown Silver Prize Band, an ambitious and successful brass band based in High Green, North Sheffield, with a history which dates back to the 1870’s.

Zest, a community enterprise delivering high quality and responsive services to local people.

Julie Wood, secretary of Chapeltown Silver Prize Band, said: “The band is delighted to have received a donation of £500 from

Jack’s Supermarket as part of the Jack’s Supports Scheme. Due to the pandemic and the cancellation of most events in 2020, the band lost most of its income.

This donation will help towards the renewal of insurance and will assist the band enormously until performances can recommence and income returns. The band would like to thank Jack’s Supermarket and their staff for their generosity and support, it really is appreciated during these challenging times.”

Daniel Saragea, store manager of Jack’s Sheffield, said: “The Jack’s Supports scheme has been running for a while now and it’s important to everyone

at Jack’s to be able to give back to the local community who have always been so kind to us. As charity fundraising has been massively affected by the pandemic, we are delighted that we are able to offer more support to organisations than ever before. We strongly recommended anyone who’s considering

Serious crime gangs use social media to encourage, recruit and trick young people to become drug runners, which is why the charity is reaching young people using the same social media channels. The campaign’s timing is particularly important as potentially more young people risk being exploited with the easing of lockdown restrictions. Fearless. org offers young people non-judgemental advice so they can make informed decisions about lifestyle choices and realise that they have an alternative option when reporting crime. The Fearless.org website allows young people to give information about crime 100% anonymously by using a secure online form.

Gemma Gibbs, Yorkshire & the Humber regional manager at the charity Crimestoppers, said: “With schools back open, the ‘stay at home’ message changing, and the opening of retail and hospitality, it’s great for the country and the economy, but it does come with more opportunities for young people to be exploited and organised crime gangs to take advantage of this. We are appealing to young people to help protect the vulnerable members in our community by telling us information

But by knowing the potentials signs of someone being groomed into such a life – where those involved are constantly looking over their shoulder for someone to either attack them or arrest them – it can make all the difference.”
