£4.3 million grants for local venues ECO SOFAS The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport has today (2 April 2021) announced that more than 2,700 cultural and creative organisations are to receive a share of £400 million as part of a vital financial boost from the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund – which has been awarded through Arts Council England, Historic England, National Lottery Heritage Fund and the British Film Institute. They have invested £4,317,677 in arts and cultural organisations across South Yorkshire through the second round

of their Culture Recovery Fund distributed by Arts Council England. Some of the organisations to have received funding in South Yorkshire are: Underneath the Stars Festival Doncaster Creates Sheffield Theatre Trust Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair, Arts Council England, said: “Investing in a thriving cultural sector at the heart of communities is a vital part of helping the whole country to recover from the pandemic. These grants will help to re-open theatres, concert halls, and museums and will give artists and companies

the opportunity to begin making new work. We are grateful to the Government for this support and for recognising the paramount importance of culture to our sense of belonging and identity as individuals and as a society.” The first round of grants and repayable finance totalling more than £800 million were allocated to ensure the immediate survival of 3,800 cultural organisations and heritage sites across the country. This second tranche of funding builds on the lifeline grants already awarded to support museums, theatres, performance

venues, historic sites and cinemas as they reopen to audiences and visitors throughout the spring and summer. Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, said: “Our record breaking Culture Recovery Fund has already helped thousands of culture and heritage organisations across the country survive the biggest crisis they’ve ever faced. Now we’re staying by their side as they prepare to welcome the public back through their doors - helping our cultural gems plan for reopening and thrive in the better times ahead.” Nearly all of the original £1.57 billion

Culture Recovery Fund has now been allocated, with over £1.2 billion in grants and repayable finance offered to more than 5,000 individual organisations and sites, and further grants to be finalised over the coming weeks. £188 million has been given to the devolved administrations through the Barnett formula, with Northern Ireland receiving £33 million, Scotland £97 million and Wales £59 million. £100 million has been given to national cultural institutions in England and the English Heritage Trust.

take the challenge!

Four charities directly supporting the Sheffield community have been awarded a cash donation as part of Jack’s supermarket’s Support Scheme. All four charities will receive £500 each to help fund their ongoing work within the community. Jack’s Supermarket, on Kilner Way, part of the Tesco family, launched its Jack’s Supports scheme to donate proceeds from the sale of carrier bags to local good causes. Usually, the four charities selected would each receive £250, and voting units would be placed in store where shoppers

could nominate one charity to receive an extra donation. However, as voting in store has closed due to social distancing measures, each selected charity will instead receive an increased donation of £500 to help those whose usual fundraising efforts may have been impacted by the pandemic. The four winning charities are: South Yorkshire County Scout Council, a local organisation providing young people with opportunities to participate in residential activities and outdoor adventure activities.

14th Sheffield (Grenoside) Scouts, a local Scout group developing local young people to be the best they can be. Chapeltown Silver Prize Band, an ambitious and successful brass band based in High Green, North Sheffield, with a history which dates back to the 1870’s. Zest, a community enterprise delivering high quality and responsive services to local people. Julie Wood, secretary of Chapeltown Silver Prize Band, said: “The band is delighted to have received a donation of £500 from

Jack’s Supermarket as part of the Jack’s Supports Scheme. Due to the pandemic and the cancellation of most events in 2020, the band lost most of its income. This donation will help towards the renewal of insurance and will assist the band enormously until performances can recommence and income returns. The band would like to thank Jack’s Supermarket and their staff for their generosity and support, it really is appreciated during these challenging times.” Daniel Saragea, store manager of Jack’s Sheffield, said: “The Jack’s Supports scheme has been running for a while now and it’s important to everyone

at Jack’s to be able to give back to the local community who have always been so kind to us. As charity fundraising has been massively affected by the pandemic, we are delighted that we are able to offer more support to organisations than ever before. We strongly recommended anyone who’s considering

applying for the next round to definitely get involved, we want to support as many local charities as possible, especially during such difficult times.” To be considered for the next round of Jack’s Supports funding you can apply by visiting https:// jackssupports.org.uk/.

crimestoppers anti-drugs message to young people family business Crimestoppers has launched a campaign you have about drug crime. Our anonymity offers complete across the Yorkshire and Humber region promise means you will stay 100% funeral service to highlight the dangers of young people anonymous. The only person who will becoming involved in County Lines. Using social media and aimed at under 18s, the charity is offering ways people can identify those who may be being groomed into a life of drug dealing, along with the associated physical and sexual violence. Using Fearless.org, Crimestoppers’ youth service, young people across the region will see warnings about these crimes where they are encouraged to look at the Fearless.org website to find out more and to pass on completely anonymously what they know. Serious crime gangs use social media to encourage, recruit and trick young people to become drug runners, which is why the charity is reaching young people using the same social media channels. The campaign’s timing is particularly important as potentially more young people risk being exploited with the easing of lockdown restrictions. Fearless. org offers young people non-judgemental advice so they can make informed decisions about lifestyle choices and realise that they have an alternative option when reporting crime. The Fearless.org website allows young people to give information about crime 100% anonymously by using a secure online form. Gemma Gibbs, Yorkshire & the Humber regional manager at the charity Crimestoppers, said: “With schools back open, the ‘stay at home’ message changing, and the opening of retail and hospitality, it’s great for the country and the economy, but it does come with more opportunities for young people to be exploited and organised crime gangs to take advantage of this. We are appealing to young people to help protect the vulnerable members in our community by telling us information

ever know you contacted us is you. Crime information can be passed to Fearless. org 100% anonymously via the website, without the fear of any repercussions. Our charity has always kept its promise of anonymity to everyone who contacts us.” Detective Inspector Mark Catney, County Lines lead for the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit, said: “Essentially, County Lines crime is drug dealers getting children to do their dirty work. Dealers will look to groom increasingly young children with expensive gifts or grand sounding promises – but it is all a mask that will quickly slip. The hardened criminals will quickly reveal who they really are. Children from 14 (and some who are younger) are being encouraged into a life of serious crime where horrific violence is common place. But by knowing the potentials signs of someone being groomed into such a life – where those involved are constantly looking over their shoulder for someone to either attack them or arrest them – it can make all the difference.” To get more information on Fearless and the resources it has available to young people and their peers, visit Fearless.org. If you have any information on a crime, you can fill out the untraceable form on the site 100% anonymously. Please note: With Fearless.org and Crimestoppers-uk.org, computer IP addresses are never traced and no-one will ever know you contacted us. For telephone calls to Crimestoppers via freephone 0800 555 111, we have no caller line display, no 1471 facility and have never traced a call.

Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like, and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “ With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later

promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years ofservice I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted, and is now a well-established business. In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.” Completing the team at High Green is John Walton, who has been with the company for over 20 years and Sharon Clayton who joined in July 2017, while Beverley Travis and Vera Gregory look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago. “Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.” If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.
