SHEFFIELD REMEMBERS HRH PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH On the morning of Friday 9th April Buckingham Palace announced the sad news that HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh the longtime companion of Queen Elizabeth II had passed away aged 99. HRH Prince Philip made numerous visits to Sheffield and South Yorkshire, first accompanying the Queen to the region over 65 years ago in October 1954.
Statement on behalf of the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Tony Downing: “On behalf of Sheffield City Council and the people of Sheffield, I wish to express our great sadness at the news of the death of His Royal
Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. “In his early adult years, The Duke of Edinburgh served in the Royal Navy and was on active service throughout the Second World War. At the end of the war, he was on the destroyer HMS WHELP which was present in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese signed the surrender on 2 September 1945. Having married the then Princess Elizabeth, The Duke of Edinburgh went on to provide enormous support to her as Queen, often through times of major challenge for the country. Aside from his loyalty to the Monarch, many of us will remember him for creating The Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, a youth awards programme founded in in 1956, that has changed the lives of countless individuals. “I recall fondly the enthusiastic welcome given by the people of Sheffield when he accompanied the Queen on a visit to the city in April 2015. It will be an event that many will remember for the rest of our lives and will remain a significant day in Sheffield’s history. “As a mark of our respect, flags will be flown at halfmast on civic buildings. Books of Condolence will be made available for people to sign online until the day after the funeral.”

summer opening for waste recycling centres Discover Jacobs The opening hours of Sheffield’s Sites are open: 9.30am until 5.30pm, 7 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC), have been extended, with all sites now open seven days a week for the rest of spring and the summer. All five of Sheffield’s HWRCs are now open from 9.30am to 5.30pm every day until Thursday 30 September. Sites accept a wide range of items household waste for recycling, including textiles, glass bottles and jars, wood, scrap metal, batteries, garden waste, electrical appliances and even engine and cooking oil. More information about what these sites can accept is available at Veolia Sheffield. When visiting a site, residents are reminded to follow the latest COVID-19 guidance at all times. Residents are responsible for keeping a safe social distance, and face coverings must be worn at all times unless exempt. It is also recommended that residents wear gloves, and bring hand sanitizer for use after visiting a site. Household Waste Recycling Centre Locations • Shirecliffe: Longley Avenue West, S5 8WA • Blackstock Road: Gleadless, S14 1FY • Beighton Road: Woodhouse, S13 7PS • Deepcar: Manchester Road, S36 2DT • High Green: Greaves Lane, S35 4GR
days a week until 30th September. Top tips to remember when visiting your local Recycling Centre • Household Waste Recycling Centres can get very busy; please be patient if visiting during peak times. • Due to social distancing rules, queues are possible at the sites. Do not queue outside the sites; this is a potential danger for other road users. Drivers found queuing will initially be asked to move on. Failure to do so could result in a £70 fine. • Site staff are not currently able to offer assistance, so please make sure that you can unload your vehicle and deposit your waste into the appropriate container on your own • Only waste from your own place of residence in Sheffield can be accepted. • We would encourage residents with significant volumes of DIY waste and garden waste to consider contacting a registered skip hire company. Residents can arrange for collections to take place from their home for both garden waste and bulky waste. Check HWRC queuing times on Twitter @ recycle4shef
yorkshire water warning of scam calls Yorkshire Water is warning customers of a telephone scam, where a fraudster claims to be from the water company and asks for bank details in order to settle a bill. The water company received reports of the scam from customers who got calls claiming that their bill is overdue, or that their direct debit payment has failed. The scammer then asks for ‘correct’ bank details, which gives them access to the person’s bank account. The fraudulent phone call may come from a New Zealand area code – starting with +64 or 0064. Jonathan Harding, managing director of Yorkshire Water’s customer contact centre, said: “It’s really important to be vigilant when giving bank details over the phone. If you suspect that a caller is illegitimate,
then hang up. The easiest and safest way to make a payment to Yorkshire Water is via our online billing service or by calling our automated payment line on 0345 1 247 247. We’re working closely with Friends Against Scams, which is a National Trading Standards initiative that protects and prevents people from becoming victims of scams by empowering them to take a stand against scams. If you do receive a phone call that you think is fraudulent, please report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via the website.” To pay a bill online, go to: www.yorkshirewater.com/bill-account/ pay-your-bill/ and to report fraud online, go to: www.actionfraud.police.uk/.
residents asked to stay up for homeless Youth homelessness charity Centrepoint is asking fundraisers if they can go one night without sleep to raise money for homeless young people. Centrepoint’s fundraising event STAY:UP is making a comeback after raising over £270k when it replaced the charity’s wellknown Sleep Out fundraiser in 2020 due to social distancing restrictions. STAY:UP asks participants to stay awake all night to raise awareness of the challenges homeless young people face, as they often have nowhere safe to sleep. That’s why Centrepoint are challenging participants to stay up from 8pm on Friday 28th May until 8am the following morning (Saturday 29th May), while raising money for homeless
young people. The virtual event is open to everyone and will kick off with content from some of Centrepoint’s celebrity ambassadors on @ CentrepointUK YouTube Channel. The 2020 event saw over 1,000 fundraisers taking part. Before the pandemic, youth homelessness was at a crisis point. Centrepoint estimates that over 120,000 young people were facing homelessness between 2019/20, an increase of more than 10,000 on the previous year. During this unprecedented period, many young people have found themselves unemployed and struggling to pay their rent, increasing their risk of homelessness.

BLADES SLIP We’ll fight for every point CLOSER TO THE INEVITABLE The Blades slipped to a home defeat against Arsenal at Bramall Lane LAST Sunday night. A clinical performance from the Gunners saw Alexandre Lacazette score in each half for the visitors, either side of a second half strike from Gabriel Martinelli. United made three changes for the clash against Arsenal. Following defeat at Leeds, fit-again Egan returned to skipper the side with Ampadu and Burke also recalled to the starting XI by interim boss Heckingbottom. It was the visitors who were first to have a sight of goal, Martinelli freed Saka, but his powerful effort flew over the bar and into the Kop. The England international again threatened as he was played in by Pepe, but Ampadu was on hand to clear the danger from the right. United’s first meaningful attack came in the 10th minute, Burke chased a ball down the right and having crossed the ball landed kindly for Osborn, he found McGoldrick, but on the turn he pulled an effort wide from a promising position. Midway through the first half, Ramsdale was smartly off his line after Martinelli had advanced in behind Ampadu, but moments later the goalkeeper needed a favorably bounce of the ball having cleared straight against Lacazette, thankfully the ball drifted back into his grateful hands. Martinelli was proving a genuine threat down the left, but from a counter-attack he fired into the side netting having opened up space on his left-foot. As the half hour ticked by, Ramsdale again had to be alert to deny Martinelli after the ball took what could have been a cruel deflection. Martinelli then advanced past Baldock, after Saka had combined with Lacazette, but Stevens was ideally placed to blocked an effort from Chambers on the line. But in the 33rd minute, Arsenal took the lead with an excellent goal. Partey started the move, he played the ball into LACAZETTE and the Frenchman combined with Saka and Ceballos before slotting past Ramsdale. With half-time approaching, the visitors forced a couple of corners in quick succession, but McGoldrick put his body on the line to deny Martinelli from twelve yards out after the initial ball hadn’t been cleared. United then forced their first corner of the game and at back post Egan teed himself up but Leno was equal to his volley at the near post. The start of the second half, saw United start positive, Egan had a header saved from an early corner, before Norwood almost caught Leno out at his near post. At the other end, Arsenal swept forward, and Pepe teed up Lacazette, but thankfully his effort flew high and wide. On 64 minutes, United made a double change in attack with Brewster and McBurnie replacing Burke and McGoldrick. But with eight minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead capitalising on the Blades losing possession in their own half, Pepe drew a save from Ramsdale before MARTINELLI tapped into the empty net on the rebound. United’s final change was enforced as McBurnie limped off following an early challenge by Mari that saw the Arsenal defender booked, Mousset entered the fray for the final few minutes. But moments later, the visitors added a third. Partey’s through ball picked out the run of LACAZETTE and he raced clear of Ampadu before slotting past Ramsdale. Jamie Smith said the Owls will continue to fight for every point available this season after suffering a 4-1 defeat to QPR at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium. Wednesday created several chances in the capital but failed to make them count, and this profligacy was punished by the hosts. Smith said: “From our point of view, the goals we conceded were not great, I felt we could have defended them better. But credit to QPR, they were clinical. “We were positive, we had the ball a lot in their final third, but we couldn’t finish it off. “It’s frustrating but it’s good that we are getting into those positions. We’re creating chances which is a good thing and, on another day, we put three or four away ourselves. “We’ll keep fighting and keep working. We’ll come in tomorrow and watch the game back, learn from it and go again. “We’ll fight for the full 18 points that are left this
We’re disappointed not to have won it Warne Rotherham United boss Paul Warne assessed his side’s display having earned a point at Huddersfield Town. The Millers could have had all three points after a strong second half display, but the result was scoreless in West Yorkshire. “I hope it doesn’t come and bite us,” said Warne. “We drive performances and from the goalkeeper right up to Smudge up top, was pretty excellent. I can’t have any complaints about the performance. I’m hugely disappointed we haven’t come away with three points. “We get on the bus thinking we’re a point closer to where we want to be. If we perform like that three out of four games, although we do need to turn them into wins. I’m really proud of the group and have got no complaints. If we’d have taken a chance, we might have come away with everything.” Both Matt Crooks and Ben Wiles had excellent chances to score when a goal seemed the only
BUTLER ON ROVERS WIGAN LOSS Andy Butler gave his reaction to the media after Rovers were beaten 4-1 by Wigan Athletic at the Keepmoat Stadium in Sky Bet League One. On his side’s poor start to the game “If I’m being honest the start of the game was a bit embarrassing, I think we all have to look at ourselves and question why they wanted it more than us. I don’t think any player could go home and be pleased with their performance. “We’ve given ourselves a mountain to climb too often in recent weeks and it’s mostly from balls into the box that we should be clearing. “I had to make a change to try and improve things, it could have been all five changes made at once but the two we did make got us the goal. “The stats show that when we concede first we struggle to win games so we need to have a long hard look at why we don’t get a reaction.” On his and his staff’s hard work in trying to turn the current form around “The staff here have been brilliant for as long as I’ve been here and you can give the players all the information they need, but you can’t cross that white line for them. “I said to the players at half-time that there were only two voices I could hear on the pitch, one was Tom Anderson’s, and the other was Paul Gerrard’s. They had a team full of talkers and we didn’t have enough. “I made a career out of my organisation rather than my individual ability, and every successful team needs
season. We still believe, you have to, we’ll fight for all the points.” Darren Moore will return to Middlewood Road on Monday after a period of isolation to recover from COVID-19, with Smith looking forward to seeing the boss back. He added: “It will be good to have the gaffer back as a presence around the training ground. “He’s been in regular contact with everyone from the staff to the players, but having him back in person will give everyone a big boost.”
possible outcome after two brilliant moves in each half, but it wasn’t to be. “For me, it doesn’t detract from an amazing performance. I’m never going to criticise my players, even more so after a performance like that. I just expected the net to ripple but it just wasn’t to be. At half time I said to Crooksy about his, he said it just hit the lad’s calf and hit the post. Then Wilesy in the 87th minute would have been a dream day. Nobody deserved it more than him, I thought he was excellent today. “Viktor came for everything. I asked him to be brave and he’s settled into his position at the club well. Woody was back in the middle of a three. We’ve hit the post and bar, Wingy’s hit one to the top corner, we’ve had a goal disallowed for offside. We have to get out of here and warm up for the next game! “Obviously I thought it was a penalty. Whether we’d have scored it was another question! I have seen them given. In fairness to the ref, he let a lot of physical things go, which I prefer. “I thought, as a Yorkshire derby, it wasn’t a boring 0-0, it was exciting.” Turning his attention to next week’s packed schedule, Warne continued: “We’ll pick them up and patch them up. I know Matty (Olosunde) is struggling with his calf. Jamie Lindsay’s struggling with his lungs. Generally, we’ll try and get them ready for the next battle on Tuesday night. The lads have left a lot out there today on the pitch. I’ll look at the GPS and try and make some sensible decisions.” a lot of communication.” On preparing for the game against Burton Albion on Tuesday night “First and foremost I want a performance from them that means something, in any walk of life if someone questions your desire to do your job then that should hurt. “I keep saying that we have to stick together but that has to start from individuals and then come together as a team.” On the players that weren’t involved in the squad and those that came off during the game “Copps opened his knee up a little bit in training, he tried to do a fitness test before the game but there was still some swelling there, we’ll look at him and hopefully he’ll be ready for Tuesday. “Brad (Halliday) has done a bit of work for the chiropractor so the game came a bit too soon for him while we wait for his back to settle down. “Reece James got hit in the face by the ball and felt a bit groggy after that so we felt it was the right thing to do to take him off, and Matt Smith just needed a rest after being away on international duty and playing a lot for us recently. “Tyreece (John-Jules) is back with us next week, and we’ll look to get a full week of training under his belt before he’s in contention.”
