elections 6th may - have you registered your right to vote? On Thursday 6 May residents in South Yorkshire will have their say on who represents them as Council, South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner and Parish Council elections take place. In order to vote in these important elections residents must be on the electoral register. With the deadline to register to vote fast approaching local Councils are urging people who have not registered at their current address to make sure they are registered in time. The deadline to register

prioritising what matters to you Sharon Kemp, Electoral Registration Officer for Rotherham, said: “Time is running out to make sure you can take part in these elections. This is the opportunity to make your voice heard and have a say on who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Rotherham. If you’re not registered by 19 April, you won’t be able to vote.” Ailsa Irvine, Director of Electoral Administration and Guidance at the Electoral Commission said: “You can’t have your

to vote is midnight on Monday 19 April. It takes just five minutes to apply online at gov.uk/registerto-vote. This year residents in our area will be voting in a total of three different elections and will select: • Councillors and Parish Councillors, who represent their local area and residents, and contribute to the development of policies in areas such as transport, social care or housing • The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), who oversees your local police force and ensures they are

say in these important elections unless you are registered to vote. It’s quick and easy – it takes just five minutes online at www. gov.uk/registertovote. If you have recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important that you act to ensure that you are registered to vote. If you were registered to vote in the last election and your details have not changed, you don’t need to take any action. If in doubt, you can check with your local authority.” Voters have a range of options for casting their ballot – in person, by post

or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote. For those who choose to vote in person, polling stations will be safe places to vote on 6 May. The deadline to apply for a postal vote was 5pm on 20 April, and for a proxy vote the deadline is 5pm on 27 April. For information on elections in their area, how to register to vote, or how to apply to vote by post or by proxy, voters can visit www.electoralcommission. org.uk/voter. Sagars using the 365 insulation system have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into rooms that can be used for any purpose, all year round. The cost of a 365 system is far less than you might think with a 3 metre by 3 metre conservatory typically costing around £1699 including vat, fitting and comes with a ten year guarantee. All work is completed in the day, following government social distancing guidelines to keep customers and fitters safe.

the source for starting your own business Teaching your offspring to drive is usually a stressful ordeal. But Thorpe Hesley shopkeeper Karen Rendi enjoyed it so much, she decided to set up her own driving academy. Zebra Motoring School will be ready to roll in Rotherham as soon as lockdown eases and customers are already lining up. Karen, 50, was the owner of Thorpe Hesley’s Village Store but on selling up she decided to become an instructor after helping her eldest son Alexander learn to drive. “He was having tuition with a professional and I gave him extra lessons in

the family car,” said Karen. “I know everyone says teaching your kids is a nightmare, but I really enjoyed the experience and Alexander said I was very calm and patient with him. It inspired me to take it up as a career.” Karen found the confidence to launch her own school thanks to a business start-up course with The Source Skills Academy at Meadowhall, where she had taken a part-time job as a quality administrator to fund her driving qualifications. She studied in the evenings online with The Source during the first lockdown.

Said Karen: “Although I’d owned a shop, I’d bought it as a going concern. There was a lot I needed to know to launch a business from scratch. My six-week startup course taught me a huge amount, including how to do my own accounts and marketing ideas and strategies that will help my business to grow.” Karen qualified as a driving instructor last September. By October she had bought a dual-control car and was ready to motor on, but had to put the brakes on when South Yorkshire went into Tier 3 restrictions. She hopes to be up and running on. April 12 but while waiting for the green light on government COVID-19 restrictions lifting, Karen is getting some more practise in - she’s helping her

younger son Edward who is now a learner driver. “Companies getting workforces ready, or people planning to launch their own businesses, can prepare for the ending of lockdown by boosting their skills now,” said Danny Slinn, Employment & Skills Project Manager at The Source. “Our Continued Professional Development courses have been specially collated for busy professionals stepping up to a new role or taking on more responsibilities and to help people like Karen set up their own business. Experts predict many people made redundant during the pandemic will see a future in self-employment. Our courses will help people on that journey.” The Source’s CPD courses

cost from £30. Work is done online, with tutors on hand. Go to https://thesourceacademy.co.uk/online-training-0. The Source is a training and development organisation providing dedicated support to South Yorkshire businesses. The Source was established as a charity in 2003. Funding continues to be sourced from appropriate organisations to leverage greater impact and help

more people, including the European Social Fund and Skills Funding Agency. All profits are invested into the ongoing development of services and facilities at The Source. Taking a holistic approach to training, The Source offers everything an individual or organisation might require.

My high school bully still takes my lunch money. But on the upside, he makes great Subway sandwiches! I took the rear view mirror out of the car, and since then.. I’ve never looked back. What’s the difference between a Hippo and a Zippo? Ones really heavy, the others a little lighter. After spending 20 minutes trying to get my wifes bra off, I decided to give up, I wish I’d never put it on now. If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it... Then my illegal logging business is a success! My doctor just told me I was suffering from paranoia. He didn’t actually say that, but I could tell it was what he was thinking. The doctor recently diagnosed me with ‘70s Fever’ It flares up occasionally. Bought my wife a fridge for her birthday. You should’ve seen her face light up when she opened it! Last night I watched a documentary on a guy who worked sixty hours a week crushing coke cans. It was soda pressing.

News, Information and Advice

universal covid testing kits now available Discover Jacobs Ways to get tested and ways to get home Everyone in England is now eligible for free, rapid Lateral Flow Device (LFD) tests to continue the fight against Covid. The LFD tests, which should be taken twice weekly, are for people who do not have symptoms and are designed to identify positive cases that would otherwise not have been found. They are easy to use and give results in 30 minutes. Anyone with Covid-19 symptoms must book a symptomatic test, also known as a PCR test, by calling 119 or booking online at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus and must self-isolate immediately. Those who get a positive LFD test must also book a PCR test within 48 hours to confirm the result. As most of us know, about 1 in 3 people with Covid do not have symptoms but can still infect others so getting tested regularly is the only way to know if someone has the virus. If people test positive and selfisolate, it helps stop the virus spreading. Susan Hird, Consultant in Public Health in Sheffield, said: “As ever we’re asking people to test regularly so that we can keep this virus at bay. The opportunity to get free lateral flow tests at a number of locations across the city or to order them online now makes it so much easier for us to do this. Getting into the habit of twiceweekly rapid LFD testing means that we can keep each other safe and, alongside the vaccine, ensure we can continue to ease our way out of lockdown. I would also encourage people to download the Covid-19 NHS app so that as many people as possible can be contacted if they have been in contact with someone who has the virus. In Sheffield, our local track and trace team are successfully contacting 95% of all people who have tested positive with Covid, which is reassuring for all of us.” While a positive LFD test is a red light, a negative test is not a green light. No test is 100% accurate so everyone must continue to play their part in preventing the spread of the virus by following the hands, face, space guidance. People should still get tested even if they have had a Covid vaccination as they may still be able to pass the virus on to others, even if they do not become ill themselves.

testing kits There are several ways to get an LFD test in Sheffield. Supervised rapid tests are available at The English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) lateral flow test site on Coleridge Road, Sheffield S9 5DA. It’s open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and appointments can be booked at https://sheffieldbooking.sishost.co.uk/ OnlineBookings/appointment.html. People can also collect test kits from this testing site without the need for an appointment and Sheffield employers with a workplace with less than 10 staff can pick them up on their behalf. 2 packs of 7 tests for home testing can also be collected from a local pharmacy or test site, or people can order online to get a pack of tests sent to their home. Those who do tests at home need to report their results online or on the phone. The instructions on how to do this are in each testing kit. Some employers and universities are also offering rapid tests so people can ask their employer or university about what is available to them. Those who attend or work at a school, college, or nursery can get rapid tests through their school, college or nursery. Primary schoolage children and younger do not need to test. More about the tests For every 1,000 rapid LFD tests carried out, less than one test will give a false positive result. Extensive clinical evaluation has been carried out on rapid LFD tests, which shows they are accurate and sensitive enough to be used in the community for screening and observation purposes. More detailed information about Coronavirus testing is available at www.nhs.uk/ conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/ Financial support and self-isolation pack Financial support is available if people test positive with a PCR (symptomatic test) who need to self-isolate and are facing hardship. They may be eligible for a test and trace payment or support through the Local Assistance Scheme

testing centre locations for pcr tests When you book your test you will be given a test site address, date and time. Please DO NOT attend at any other site other than your allocated test centre as you will be turned away to go to the location listed on your test booking. You can only have a test at a test centre if you have booked an appointment. Please do not attend a site unless you have booked a test as you will be turned away and asked to book an appointment. If you cannot get an appointment right away, stay at home and self-isolate until an appointment becomes available. the trapdoor hammer blow to owls hopes finally opens It’s been coming for a while - and Saturday night saw official confirmation that the Blades’ two-year stay in the Premier League would be coming to an end, as defeat at Molyneaux, coupled with results elsewhere, finally ended their hopes of a miracle. Fans can be encouraged by a more spirited display as the threadbare squad decimated even further by the news that McBurnie & Sharp were out for the season - took the game to their hosts with more confidence and quality than exhibited in previous performances lately. United’s season was summed up in thirty seconds in the second half - their best move of the game opened up the Wolves defence noly for Enda Steven’s shot to ricochet off a defender - and the hosts promptly broke upfield to score with their only real chance of the game. So on paper the Blades now have four games to regroup and gain some impetus ready for the Championship - but fans will be concerned that the managerial vacancy remains unfilled, and uncertainty remains around which of the squad may be leaving or staying. Added to this came the surpirse news that the Chairman - the Prince’s sonin-law - has now decided to step down, creating even more confusion around how venets will unfold at the Lane in the close season. On the bright side, the club are enthusiastic about the promising crop of younger talent coming through the ranks at U23 and U18 level - wit the work of Jack Lester & his team being recognised at international level with numerous call-ups for various countries. Indeed, the papers are full or rumours that bigger clubs are monitoring the progress of many - Kyron Gordon being one in particular - and although he and others such as Zak Brunt are yet to feature despite being on the matchday bench, the cameo appearances of Antwoine Hackford and Iliam Ndaye suggest that the new manager (when appointed) will be expected to dip into this developing pool of talent with a view to a number of the youngsters being ready when we return to the Premier League. Meanwhile fans will be awaiting news of season ticket policy for the coming season, and hopefully expecting the club to acknowledge the loyalty shown by supporters in previous seasons. Certainly any incentive they can offer to ensure Bramall Lane will be packed next season (assuming fans will be allowed to return) will be a massive boost towards United’s attempts to spend a minimal amount of time back in the Championship. Hopefully the benefit of the parachute payments will ensure that the Blades are a club who can compete for the very best players at the level of the second tier for one year, at least - especially since although the club are privately resigned to losing Sander Berge, there will hopefully be a significant profit to come which can be reinvested refreshing the squad.

Wednesday were dealt another devastating blow to their Championship survival hopes in a game where almost everything went their way early on. They took the lead in under five minutes and received a further boost within twenty minutes as Bristol were reduced to ten men with a penalty tothe Owls. However the spot kick was wasted and from then on they couldn’t find the killer second goal, and as has been the case in so many games this season, a late equaliser left their place in the Championship hanging on a knife edge. Julian Börner’s early strike was heading to be the only goal of a one-sidead game that the Owls controlled from start to finish, even without the dismissal of Henri Lansbury in the first half for deliberate handball on the goal line. Barry Bannan saw the resulting penalty saved by Daniel Bentley and the hosts were made to pay as Tyreeq Bakinson struck with three minutes to go. Wednesday were off to the perfect start in the afternoon sun, taking the lead inside six minutes. Bannan’s corner dipped to the back post, where Josh Windass fired back across goal for Börner to finish from close range. That gave the Owls a strong foundation - they might have been out of sight by half time - although City did rally in an instant, with Famara Diedhiou testing Keiren Westwood from the edge of the box. From there, though, Wednesday swiftly regrouped, bossed possession and asked all the questions. And on 22 minutes, they were given a golden opportunity to double the lead from the spot. The Robins were reduced to 10 men to boot as Lansbury was adjudged to have used a hand to divert Callum Paterson’s shot over and saw red. But keeper Bentley ensured his side

stayed in the game with a low, diving save from Bannan’s penalty. Bannan almost made amends moments after the restart, slaloming his way past two defenders to face Bentley on the angle but the shot was planted narrowly wide. Bannan was again the architect as just a lick of paint stood between Wednesday and a 2-0 lead, the Scot delivering a delicious cross to the far post, where the advancing Liam Palmer got a good connection on the volley but slammed against the crossbar. Josh Windass drilled past the post and then brushed the top of the net five minutes before the end of a first half the Owls completely dominated. The challenge was to maintain similar levels in the second period and they frustrated City by keeping the ball for extended periods. The Robins made a triple change to alter the flow of the game but still the visitors struggled to get a foothold. The offensive play was all the Owls and Bentley was off his line sharply to deny Kadeem Harris before Joey Pelupessy had a fierce drive from distance charged down. City were pinned into their own half and when they did venture forward, the blue and white line ahead was resolute. Bannan curled wide after ghosting into the area from the right and with the minutes passing by, Wednesday had to see the game out. But with three minutes to go they were hit on the counter as the Robins levelled from a rare move into the final third as Bakinson span to fire an equaliser from 20 yards.

fixture pile-up telling on millers squad as points squandered

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne felt his side deserved a point from their game with Birmingham City at AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon. The Millers appeared to be the side in the ascendancy as they chased the crucial first goal of the game, but it was Blues who found it against the run of play through Harlee Dean’s late header. After admitting his side were outplayed by Coventry City on Thursday, the Millers boss was left ruing his side’s fortune after the game with Lee Bowyer’s side. “I came out after the game Thursday night and admitted Coventry were the better team and deserved to win,” said Warne. “I don’t think we weren’t the better team today. I thought at least our players deserved a draw. To concede so late on with a sucker punch, we had to take Robbo off as he was struggling. We had opportunities today to make the net ripple. Unfortunately if you don’t take your chances at any level of football, you’re not going to win. Today was a good example of that. Sometimes you need your centre-halves or full-backs to get a goal out of nothing. I didn’t see their goal coming. I appreciate we were fatiguing but I always felt we were going to get the winner. It wasn’t to be. It’s difficult. The team are well coached, well organised and give everything they can. It’s just disappointing because the goals have killed us. We could have had a winner at Hudd and equaliser at Millwall. Our box to box play is good but, unfortunately, you are judged on everything else and

that’s where, at the moment, we’ve let ourselves down. I’ve just said to the lads, while you’ve got a chance, you’ve got a chance. You have to have belief. Thursday night was a poor performance and I didn’t have anything positive to take from it, but I did today. If we are to beat Middlesbrough on Wednesday night we might just be a point behind Derby and it’s game on.But we have to turn chances in to goals if we are to survive. Fundamentally, goals are letting us down. I think you could see in the last 10 minutes that we were jaded and it is not hard to see why. I thought Macca was really good but was blowing, Robbo was struggling, so I had to change. Freddie and Smudge were great up top, but I though George had trained really well this week. He’s really good on the day and I just thought maybe it might be his day. If a chance would have fallen to him and he’d have scored we’d be saying how good of a substitution it was, but it wasn’t to be and we end up losing the game. It’s a tough swallow today because I don’t think our performance deserved a defeat.”
